"Great mystery away from to Paris for the PSG vs Nantes game on Saturday night. A brilliant experience to see a top team in a competitive game where the stadium was packed and full of atmosphere. We then had two full days to explore Paris and all the sites before flying home Monday night. A big thanks to Kirsty and the Secret matchday team for their help and great communication having only booked fairly short notice before. Will definitely book again next year and recommend for others to use this service.."

Brendan H

"This was a great experience, never would have thought to go to a game in Denmark, but it was a near sold out stadium with great atmosphere and Aarhus was such a charming city. Liked that you could give places you'd rather not go, as I feared flying from Scotland the number of places to be sent direct was slightly limited. Be prepared to wait til late in the day (1-2 weeks before) to find out where you're going, but this is down to the nature of the scheduling of fixtures rather what these guys do, which is taking all the awkward admin out of booking a holiday where you can catch a game."

Iain D

"Having seen advertisements online for Secretmatchday over the last couple of months I was very curious to see if it actually works. A little bit to my surprise the whole experience was flawless. From the communication with the team to the boarding passes to the tickets everything went so smoothly. The best part was getting to experience a brilliant atmosphere at Stade Rennais just above the Rennes ultras. As someone who has to meticulously plan their football weekend trips,Secret matchday took away so much stress and hassle. All I had to do was show up. Would highly recommend to anyone who’s looking to experience European football for the first time. You won’t be disappointed"

Jamie L

"Six of us went for my lads 21st and what can I say. Absolutely fantastic these guys, all my questions answered promptly and all went like clockwork. Ended up in Milan the flights were at great times and the hotel was fantastic and the match at the San Siro well wow!! They even followed up to see how we'd gone on. If you have any worries then don't first class service that we'll be using again.. Well done to you all.."

5 Invaluable Pieces of Football Away Days Advice 2024

Football fans singing together

If you’re a fan planning football away days trips, it’s important to prepare carefully. To help you make the most of your experience, we’ve put together a list of 5 pieces of football away days advice .

These tips cover everything from travel arrangements to matchday etiquette, so you can enjoy a memorable and satisfying experience while supporting your team away from home. Whether you’re a Tottenham Hotspur or Notts County fan, these tips are sure to help!

Football away days advice

So, what are our Top 5 Pieces of Football Away Days Advice?

Plan travel arrangements in advance.

It is important to plan your travel arrangements well in advance for a successful football away day . This helps you secure affordable transportation options like car, bus, or train and ensures that you reach the stadium on time.

Arriving late for the match can be frustrating and disappointing, and you may miss out on pre-match activities like visiting local pubs. To enjoy a stress-free and smooth away day, plan your travel ahead of time and avoid unnecessary stress.

Traffic for Premier League fixtures can be terrible, whether it’s Manchester City vs Manchester United or a two teams in the relegation zone. So always leave yourself a few hours just in case!

Dress Appropriately

To fully enjoy your football away day , it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather and occasion. This will increase your comfort level throughout the day, especially during extreme weather conditions.

Additionally, it’s crucial to consider the dress code of the home team’s supporters to show respect and avoid any conflicts. By dressing appropriately, you can blend in with the locals and have a more immersive experience as a visiting fan.

I’ve travelled to over 150 away days and my best tip for you would be to not wear your teams colours until you’re inside the stadium, especially if it’s derby day. This will reduce the risk of you being in any conflict. Many fans travel in groups, which is your best bet to stay safe

Respect Local Customs & Matchday Etiquette

When going to a football away day, it’s vital to respect local customs and matchday etiquette. Each football club and country has its unique traditions and expectations, so it’s necessary to research and comprehend them before the game to prevent misunderstandings or conflicts.

You should adhere to stadium rules, show respect towards the home team’s fans, and refrain from using any offensive language or committing provocative acts. By following local customs and matchday etiquette, you can help promote a friendly and welcoming environment and focus on the football!

Snacks For The Journey

To have a successful football away day, make sure to stay hydrated and bring snacks for the journey. This is particularly important if you will be travelling for a considerable amount of time, regardless of your mode of transportation and the distance of your journey.

Bringing enough water and snacks is vital to keep your energy levels up and prevent dehydration, especially if you plan to drink alcohol during the game. Also, football away grounds are always expensive, so you can save yourself so money bringing your own food and drink.

I’ve made this mistake many time. There’s nothing worse than being sat on a coach starving for hours. Proper hydration and nourishment can also help you avoid exhaustion and sickness, allowing you to fully appreciate the matchday experience.

Keeping Valuables Safe & Secure

When going on a football away day, it is essential to keep your valuable belongings safe and secure . Unfortunately, pickpocketing and theft are frequent in crowded places, including stadiums.

To prevent such incidents, it is necessary to keep your phone, wallet, and other valuables out of sight and secure. This can be accomplished by using a bag with a zipper or wearing a money belt. By following these safety measures, you can have a stress-free and pleasant football away day without worrying about any potential theft.

Safe travel bag for football fans

I hope this Football Away Days Advice helps!

To have a great experience supporting your team on football away days in 2023, remember to follow these five important tips.

By following these tips, you will have an enjoyable and hassle-free time while making unforgettable memories. And most importantly, don’t forget to stay safe and fully immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of an away day.

Football FanCast

The 10 best football away days in europe - ranked.

Everyone loves an away day, so Football FanCast has ranked the top ten destinations in Europe.

Everyone loves an away day; it's such a quintessential part of football culture, going away with your mates or family and following your team up and down the country, come rain or shine.

However, as great as they are, there is something better: a European away day.

Only some of us are lucky enough to support a club that we can follow onto the continent, but when we do, it can be the highlight of the entire season. As with these trips, It's not just about the football.

Read More: The top 10 away days in the Premier League

With that in mind, Football FanCast has created a list of the top ten European away days based on the football and the destination.

10 Benfica - Lisbon

Kicking off our list is an away day to Portugal's most successful clubs and one of its nicest cities, Lisbon's SL Benfica .

The Eagles have won 38 domestic titles - the most of any team in the country - and boasts a massive and very vocal support, who can create quite the atmosphere for European games.

The city is also one of the best places to spend a weekend away, with stunning architecture, lovely weather and plenty of history and culture to get stuck into.

Lisbon is actually the oldest city in Western Europe , being founded centuries before London.

Prices aren't too bad in the city either as it comes in at 36 on the list of most expensive European cities .

9 Galatasaray - Istanbul

From the most westerly club on our list, the one furthest east: Istanbul's Galatasaray.

Gala are one of the biggest clubs in world football, so it shouldn't be surprising to learn that they are Turkey's most successful side, winning 22 Turkish Super Ligs , the most of any team in the country.

One of the biggest pluses of an away day against Gala is witnessing the stadium's intense atmosphere. Many of the teams on this list will have impressive atmospheres, but none quite reach the level found in the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.

The other benefit to this away day is the chance to explore Istanbul. The city is one of the most historically important anywhere in the world, and you can't move for significant cultural and historical sights.

Interestingly, half the city is in Europe and the other half is in Asia and this is one of the pressure points that adds even more drama to the derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, as the latter is in the European side and the former on the other.

The most famous sight in the city and one you can't leave without seeing, is the Hagia Sophia Mosque, which was completed in 537 AD.

8 Bayern Munich - Munich

Our first German club on the list, and if you're a beer aficionado, then this is the away day for you.

We're, of course, talking about Bayern Munich .

Now, from a purely footballing perspective, this is an obvious inclusion on the list as Bayern play some of the most entertaining football on the continent, they have the England captain up top, and their stadium is mightily impressive. There's nothing not to like.

However, Munich has quite a lot to offer away from the football.

If you're heading there from late September to early October, you can't miss Oktoberfest. The annual event sees one of the biggest beer festivals overtake the city, alongside a food and wine festival for those not keen on the wheaty stuff.

Aside from the food and drink, there is plenty of history to see in the city, and the surrounding mountains provide plenty of opportunities to explore nature.

Prices in Munich are relatively average, with the city coming in as the 21st most expensive in Europe .

7 Borussia Dortmund - Dortmund

There are some things that every football fan should see at one point in their life, and one of those things is Borussia Dortmund's world-famous Yellow Wall.

Dortmund are the second German club on this list, and while the attraction of Munich was partly the football and partly the destination, an away day to Dortmund is all about the football.

The club have always prided itself on playing attractive football regardless of the opposition, and while that hasn't always resulted in the best outcomes for the team, it has meant that fans are always entertained.

Pair the football with the genuinely fantastic tifos and fanfare from the almost 25,000 Yellow Wall, and you're guaranteed a great trip, regardless of how your team gets on.

Another plus to a trip here is that your money will go a little further than in Munich, with Dortmund coming in as the 46th most expensive city on the continent .

6 Paris Saint-Germain - Paris

One of the quintessential European capitals, no list of continental away days is truly complete without the addition of Paris.

Now say what you want about the City of Lights - and people have - it's undeniably the place to be for history and culture buffs.

You can hardly walk ten meters without finding another museum, so much so that Paris officially has the most museums out of any city in the world .

The football isn't bad, either.

Granted, the departure of Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr over the summer has somewhat reduced the appeal of watching Paris Saint-Germain play, but it's still a privilege to watch Kylian Mbappe do his thing live.

One of the only downsides of a trip to Paris is the cost, with it coming in as Europe's ninth most expensive city .

5 Ajax - Amsterdam

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Amsterdam more than delivers on both a footballing and sightseeing front.

Ajax might not be the powerhouse they were in your dad's day - and they're practically imploding at the moment - but in an average year, they still play some beautiful football, and hey, this is a game that a lot of English clubs would fancy themselves in, so there's that.

Away from the football, the city has something for everyone.

Love art and culture? Go to the Rijksmuseum and look at some fantastic works from Rembrandt.

Want to try some new food? Explore some of the 2,293 restaurants the city has to offer. And, of course, there's the nightlife as well.

Really, the only downside is that Amsterdam comes in as the tenth most expensive city in Europe .

4 AC Milan/Inter - Milan

When it comes to iconic football stadiums, there really aren't many better than Milan's San Siro, home to both AC Milan and Inter , so both clubs make it onto our list.

After a decade of mediocrity, the Rossoneri are back to playing exciting football and winning titles, as are the Nerazzuri.

Milan is a dream for architecture fans, with sights like the Duomo easily accessible on any given day. Similarly to Paris, the Italian city is chockfull of museums to get lost in.

That said, the main attraction of this trip has to be the San Siro, so it would be well worth booking a tour of the stunning ground and its iconic spiral walkways.

As the 20th most expensive city in Europe , prices are neither here nor there.

3 Union Berlin - Berlin

Our third and final German city to make the list - we promise - is the capital, Berlin.

Until fairly recently, the biggest club in the city was Hertha Berlin. However, with their relegation last season and Union Berlin's rapid ascension to Champions League football in recent years, it's hard not to describe the latter as the city's new 'biggest side.'

UEFA has forced the club to use the city's Olympiastadion for European games, and while that has understandably upset the fans, it did lead to an awe-inspiring spectacle when they hosted Braga earlier this season. The 74,000-strong crowd created an unbelievable atmosphere and made their European matches a must-attend for fans of the game.

Away from the football, though, Berlin also happens to be one of the best places to spend a weekend away. The sheer size of the place means that there really is something for everyone.

History buffs will find something interesting around every corner, given the last century of change that the place has experienced and for party animals, there might not be a better city in all of Europe.

The city is quite expensive, but at number 14 on the list , it's not too bad.

2 Real Madrid - Madrid

Real Madrid are the biggest football club in the world, the most successful Champions League side ever and are based in the capital city of Spain; we couldn't do an away days list without including Los Blancos.

The main attraction of this trip will undoubtedly be the match itself, as the opportunity to watch Real at the Santiago Bernabeu is truly a bucket list item. The view from inside the stadium is outstanding, while the less said about the new outside facade the better.

While Cristiano Ronaldo , Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale are all gone, the opportunity to see Jude Bellingham swanning about the pitch like a prime Zinedine Zidane is reason enough to get a ticket.

Besides the football, there is plenty to eat and drink with the city boasting over 6,000 individual restaurants , and with the weather, you'll likely be able to enjoy your meal al fresco.

Your pocket money will go further here than at home, with Madrid coming in as Europe's 39th most expensive city .

1 Roma - Rome

Here we are then, the number one European away day on our list, and while every trip on this list is fantastic, we happen to think that going to Rome to watch Roma is the best one of them all.

Now, Roma clearly aren't a bigger club than, say, Real Madrid or AC Milan, and they probably don't play better football than Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund, but that doesn't matter.

When you watch a Champions League , Europa League , or even a Conference League game at the Stadio Olimpico, very few places are quite like it.

The singing before the game starts, the drums that go for the full 90, and the sea of waving flags all make for a genuinely memorable experience and one that doesn't quite translate through the television for whatever reason.

However, even if the football was rubbish, the city of Rome adds so much more to this trip, and for lovers of history and culture, there probably isn't a better destination on this list.

The Colosseum, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Vatican, the Forum, the Spanish Steps, and many other historical landmarks are all within the same city.

And to round it all off, the weather is usually beautiful, the food is fantastic, and it's all pretty affordable .

Honestly, what's not to love?

Football Away Days: What To Do In Milan

AC Milan vs Inter Milan at the San Siro Stadium

Sports Editor

Having been home to Marco van Basten, Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini, the San Siro can stake a claim for the best stadium in Europe , and you’re heading to Milan, so you need to know where to go beforehand. Luckily, you came to the right place. Located roughly 5 kilometres from the city centre, you can easily head to the stadium by the new M5 metro line (purple on the map).

If you have the time and/or energy then walk up the spiralled turrets that encase the stadium, as the intermittent glimpses into the pitch ensure an exceptional way to build the excitement and atmosphere.

Something to eat:

Pizzeria Cinder Mount – This tiny establishment along the Viale Monte Ceneri provides gourmet Neapolitan pizza at a price almost unheard of in Milan (dinner for two including two pizzas, two beers, coffee and dessert for 27€). Particularly appealing is their great range of beautifully presented calzones, piled high with thick-sliced ham and prosciutto. Well-reviewed for their fast, friendly service, Cinder Mount is one of Milan’s best kept pizza secrets.

Viale Monte Ceneri, 58, Milan +39 02 3300 2369

Something to drink:

Bar Cuore – This place attracts an alternative, artsy crowd, many of whom are students in the city. The friendly bartenders serve up some mean drinks and the vibe is typically laid back; Cuore makes its customers feel right at home. Things can get a bit more upbeat during the occasional concerts, when live bands or DJs pump their tunes all night long. The drinks are fairly cheap and there is even a foosball table to keep you occupied, but watch out because the standard of the locals is pretty high!

Something to see:

Leonardo’s Vineyard – Located in the heart of Milan, Leonardo’s Vineyard is a newly opened museum which hosts, well, Leonardo’s vines ! Situated across the street from Santa Maria delle Grazie – the church where the artist’s famous Last Supper is housed – La Vigna di Leonardo is a hidden gem which is a perfect refuge for all those tourists who want to chill out in the sun while enjoying another secret of Lombardy’s capital city. Remember though, you need a booking.

Something to do:

Go for ice cream at Il Massimo del gelato , situated in the upscale neighborhood of Via Lodovico Castelvetro. This authentic gelateria prefers a smaller, more traditional offering of well-refined flavors. Refining the classics is what they do best — they are most famous for offering 10 different flavors of chocolate alone. Frequently endorsed as one of the best gelaterias in Milan, seating can be scarce in this small, popular establishment but you can always get your gelato on the go.

Q&A: Tips for viewing the 2024 solar eclipse

Press contact :.

A montage of solar eclipse photos. In the top row, the moon's shadow gradually covers the sun's disk, moving from upper right to lower left. The center row shows three images of totality and near-totality. The bottom row shows the solar disk reemerging.

Previous image Next image

On Monday, April 8, the United States will experience a total solar eclipse — a rare astronomical event where the moon passes directly between the sun and the Earth, blocking out the sun’s light almost completely. The last total solar eclipse in the contiguous U.S. was in 2017, and the next one won’t be until 2044.

If the weather cooperates, people across the United States — from northeastern Maine to southwestern Texas — will be able to observe the eclipse using protective eyewear. Those in the path of totality , where the moon entirely covers the sun, will have the best view, but 99% of people in the continental U.S. will be able to see a partial eclipse. Weather permitting, those on the MIT campus and the surrounding area will see 93 percent of the sun covered, with the partial eclipse starting at 2:15 p.m. and reaching its peak around 3:29 p.m. Gatherings are planned at the Kresge Oval and the MIT Museum , and a live NASA stream will be shown in the Building 55 atrium .

Brian Mernoff , manager of the CommLab in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, is an accomplished astrophotographer and science educator. Mernoff is headed to Vermont with his family to experience the totality from the best possible angle — but has offered a few thoughts on how to enjoy the eclipse safely, wherever you are.

Q: What should viewers expect to see and experience with this solar eclipse?

A: When you’re watching TV (the sun) and your toddler, dog, or other large mammal (the moon) blocks your view, you no doubt move over a bit to try to get a partial or full view of the TV. This is exactly how the path of totality works for an eclipse. If you are exactly in line with the moon and sun, it will be completely blocked, but if you start moving away from this path, your view of the sun will start to increase until the moon is not in the way at all.

The closer you are to the path of totality, the more of the sun will be blocked. At MIT, about 93 percent of the sun will be blocked. Those in the area will notice that things around you will get slightly darker, just like when it starts to become overcast. Even so, the sun will remain very bright in the sky and solar glasses will be required to view the entirety of the eclipse. It really goes to show how incredibly bright the sun is!

Within the narrow path of totality, the moon will continue to move across the sun, reaching 100 percent coverage. For this short period of time, you can remove your glasses and see a black disk where the sun should be. Around the disk will be wispy white lines. This is the corona, the outermost part of the sun, which is normally outshone by the sun’s photosphere (surface). Around the edges of the black disk of the moon, right as totality begins and ends, you can also see bright spots around the edges, known as Bailey’s Beads, caused by sunlight shining between mountains and craters on the moon.

But that’s not all! Although you will be tempted to stare up at the sun throughout totality, do not forget to observe the world around you. During totality, it feels like twilight. There is a 360-degree sunset, the temperature changes rapidly, winds change, animals start making different sounds, and shadows start getting weird (look into “shadow bands” if you have a chance).

As soon as totality ends, and you start to see Baily’s Beads again, put your solar glasses back on as it will get very bright again very fast as the moon moves out of the way.

Q: What are the best options for viewing the eclipse safely and to greatest effect?

A: No matter where you are during the eclipse, make sure you have solar glasses. These glasses should be ISO-approved for solar viewing. Do not use glasses with scratches, holes, or other damage.

If you are unable to obtain solar glasses in time, you can safely view the eclipse using a home-made projection method , such as a pinhole camera or even projecting the image of the sun through a colander.

The best view of the eclipse will be from within the path of totality, but even if you are not within it, you should still go outside to experience the partial eclipse. Use the NASA Eclipse Explorer to find the start, maximum, and end times, and then find a nice spot outside — preferably with some shade — put on your glasses, and enjoy the show.

For a closer view of the sun, find a friend that has a telescope with the correct ISO-certified solar filter. This will let you see the photosphere (or chromosphere if it is an H-alpha scope) in a lot more detail. If you do not have access to a telescope, NASA plans to livestream a telescope view throughout the eclipse. [The livestream will be displayed publicly on a large screen in Building 55 at MIT, rain or shine.]

The only time you can look at or image the sun without a filter is during 100 percent totality. As soon as this period is done, glasses and filters must be put back on.

After the eclipse, keep your glasses and filters. You can use them to look at the sun on any day (it took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize that I could use the glasses at any time instead of lugging out a telescope). On a really clear day, you can sometimes see sunspots!

Q: How does eclipse photography work?

A: This year I plan to photograph the eclipse in two ways. The first is using a hydrogen-alpha telescope. This telescope filters out all light except for one wavelength that is given off by hydrogen. Because it blocks out most of the light from the sun’s surface, it allows you to see the turbulent upper atmosphere of the sun, including solar prominences that follow magnetic field lines.

Because this telescope does not allow for imaging during totality as too much light is blocked, I also plan to set up a regular camera with a wide-angle lens to capture the total eclipse with the surrounding environment as context. During the 2017 eclipse, I only captured close-ups of the sun using a regular solar filter and missed the opportunity to capture what was going on around me.

Will it work? That depends on if we get clear skies, and how many pictures of my 1.5-year-old need to be taken (as well as how much chasing needs to be done).

If you would like to take pictures of the eclipse, make sure you protect your camera sensor. The sun can easily damage lenses, sensors, and other components. Here are some examples of solar damaged cameras . The solution is simple, though. If using a camera phone, you can take pictures through an extra pair of solar glasses, or even tape them to the phone. For cameras with larger lenses, you can buy cardboard filters that slide over the front of your camera or even buy ISO-approved solar film and make your own.

Q: Any fun, unique, cool, or interesting science facts about this eclipse to share?

A: If you want to get even more involved with the eclipse, there are many citizen science projects that plan to collect as much data as possible throughout the eclipse.

NASA is planning to run several experiments during the eclipse , and researchers with MIT Haystack Observatory will also be using four different technologies to monitor changes in the upper atmosphere , both locally and across the continent.

If you are interested in learning more about the eclipse, here are two of my favorite videos, one on “ unexpected science from a 0.000001 megapixel home-made telescope ” and one on solar eclipse preparation .

Rumor: NFL Teams Shying Away From Texas Longhorns DT T'Vondre Sweat After Arrest?

Texas Longhorns defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat's NFL Draft stock may have taken a big hit with his DWI arrest over the weekend.

  • Author: Matt Galatzan

In this story:

Texas Longhorns defensive tackle and hopeful NFL Draft prospect T'Vondre Sweat was arrested over the weekend on a DWI charge in Austin, and it may have seriously impacted his draft stock.

Sweat was thought of as an early Day 2 and perhaps even late Day 1 pick, but must now wait to see if and how his mistake will affect his future, and where he lands on draft day. While it is impossible to know for sure how much his position will be affected, history suggests that he will likely drop on most team's draft boards.

However, according to NFL analyst Lance Zierline, some teams may already be starting to shy away from Sweat entirely, including the up-and-coming Houston Texans.

undefined

Texas White Team defensive line T'Vondre Sweat (93) runs into the tunnel after warm-ups ahead of the

SARA DIGGINS/AMERICAN-STATESMAN / USA

"Having multiple Texans fans, ask me about T’Vondre sweat and whether or not he would be a Texans target after his DWI arrest," Zierlein said on X . "I would be surprised if he is still on their board. I mean, never say, never, but I’m not sure the Texans want to disrupt momentum with a player they may not be able to trust. That is just a guess."

All that said, this particular mistake may not be an isolated incident, and the rumored loss of interest may stem from farther back than initially thought.

According to NFL Draft expert Dane Brugler, there was already a concern from teams about Sweat's partying during his earlier days at Texas - an issue which Sweat did his best to assure teams was in the past.

Now, after the arrest, that potential issue will be fresh on their minds.

"According to a team source, Sweat has been up front with NFL teams about his "partying" as an underclassman," Brugler said on X. "And made it a point of emphasis in interviews that it was all in the past. Obviously, today's incident (3 weeks from the NFL Draft) won't help answer any concerns with teams."

Sweat, the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and winner of the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman in college, is still one of the more talented prospects at his position in the class.

So yes, he will of course still be drafted... just maybe not as high as might've previously been the case.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

Here's what we know about the next total solar eclipse to cross over the U.S.

Eclipse playlist: Fans return to Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' ahead of total solar eclipse

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Pets and the eclipse: Will my pets be safe during the April 2024 solar eclipse? What experts say.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.
