Julia Berolzheimer's Charming Charleston Home Is Filled With Stylish Details

Petra Guglielmetti is a freelance writer who covers beauty, lifestyle, wellness, home, and parenting.

julia house tour

The South Carolina-based influencer and entrepeneur invites us into her picture-perfect house.

Timeless Beauty

Equal parts quintessential Southern and modern-day millennial, this home (complete with a white picket fence) is one property that perfectly reflects its owner. Julia Berolzheimer may have 1.3 million Instagram followers ( @juliaberolzheimer ) and counting, but she considers herself more traditional than trendy. In fact, her lifestyle blog is built upon her knack for reinventing classics with a contemporary spin—whether that's a floral-print dress topped with a cardigan or the laid-back sophistication of her Lowcountry cottage in the city's Old Village District.

The crisp white paint and buzzy blue shutters (Benjamin Moore's Simply White and Blue Porcelain) complete the photogenic cottage style.

Gal Goes South

The custom-renovated home is one way that she and her husband, Thomas Berolzheimer, really are living the modern dream. Running their own company afforded them the flexibility to pick up and move to South Carolina from San Francisco practically on a whim. Northern California natives who met in college, they fell hard for Charleston on a vacation in 2016. The fact that it's so photogenic didn't hurt; Thomas, a photographer, had been helping Julia with her blog since she launched it in 2011, during her junior year. After graduation, the two grew the lifestyle brand full-time out of their San Francisco apartment.

The travel-obsessed couple had been mulling which cities could offer them a balanced lifestyle, a big backyard, and a beautiful backdrop for their growing company. Charleston instantly felt like the place. "We loved the historic homes of downtown, and when we came over to the Old Village , there was just this sense of calm," she says. "It immediately felt like a natural spot for us," he agrees. So much so that they booked a return trip a month later, touring 14 houses in two days and putting down an offer on a property they almost hadn't bothered seeing because of its unimpressive listing. With a pink exterior, a green roof, and a perplexing floor plan, it had just been sitting on the market—probably because young families thought the layout made no sense, Julia says, noting how the upstairs was about 80% primary suite. Still, they decided to swing by. "It's in a magical spot with a water view from the front porch and on a wonderful street," she adds. The house also had great bones, charming shiplap walls, and ample windows to welcome the ethereal coastal light—more a necessity than a mere perk when your home doubles as a lifestyle-blog setting.

The vision within.

That said, they wanted to make major changes to the floor plan and redecorate to reflect their aesthetic—traditional with lots of travel-inspired color, plus pops of lush florals. Coming from apartment living, the couple felt overwhelmed by the project's scale, so they reached out to local designer and Olivia Brock of Torrance Mitchell Designs —a fellow young entrepreneur with a rapidly growing following. "A mutual friend mentioned her," Julia says. "I took one look at her website and was like, "yes!" Once we met with her, it wasn't even a question." The next step was talking with architect Beau Clowney , who has collaborated with Brock on many projects. The footprint of the house, built in 2005, would remain mostly the same, but the layout was rearranged. "We centralized the kitchen and put it on axis with the courtyard," says Clowney. That major layout change helped amplify the home's indoor-outdoor connection. The upstairs updates were more about constructing a family-friendly floor plan. They moved walls to create an en suite guest room and two bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bath in between.

Then there was the challenge of shoring up the newish structure with plenty of authentic Charleston personality. Brock typically focuses on historic homes, so working with a younger house was a departure for her. But like Julia, she's proven adept at intermingling past with present. "Despite the fact that it's effectively a brand-new house, we pulled in so many timeless, handmade, and artisanal things that create character and give it that old-world feel," says Brock. The result is a totally fresh take on Southern charm . Or as one would more succinctly say in Instagram land, #decorgoals.

Watching the World Go By

The wraparound front porch couldn't feel more Southern. Iconic bamboo-lattice Brown Jordan Calcutta furniture sets a "trop-traditional" tone that carries throughout the home—"it feels like a family came to Charleston in the 18th century by way of the Caribbean," Brock describes. "These pieces have been around for 60 years and will forever be around, so you can start a collection and build on it," she adds. Julia and Thomas love to sit out here and eat lunch or dinner overlooking Charleston Harbor.

Outstanding Find

Thomas loves to garden, forever swapping plants in and out of pots, many perched on vintage plant stand the couple impulse-purchased during a visit to Petersham Nurseries in London. "When we realized how much they'd cost to ship to South Carolina, we wanted to back out, but we were committed—so we said OK, we need to make these front-and-center," recalls Thomas, who also edged the porch with blush Clouds of Glory roses sent by a flower-farmer friend back in California.

Local Color

A graphic wood floor, hand painted by artist Suzanne Allen, establishes a vibrant welcome. The coral lantern from The Urban Electric Co. and paintings by Karin Olah and Kate Long Stevenson—all based in Charleston—make the space double as a gallery filled with Lowcountry talent.

Cool & Collected

A favorite pink velvet sofa the couple brought from San Francisco—a piece frequently seen on the blog—was re-covered in a camel shade for a more neutral, sophisticated feel. Like the rest of the house, this room features antiques alongside affordable finds, such as the Wisteria étagères beside the sofa. "I like mixing it up: something custom, something catalog, something antique, and something vintage or found," says Brock. "Not only is it fun, but it's also more accessible."

Exotic Style

This formal dining room does not feel uptight, thanks to a mix of design periods and price points. Moving cross-country, the couple brought only pieces they truly loved, like this vintage Milo Baughman burled-wood Parsons table. Helping its minimalist shape adapt to this traditional setting are French-style chairs from Ballard Designs, reupholstered in a Cole & Son fabric.

Island Time

The vaulted kitchen favors generous windows, amplifying its bright, breezy feel. The focal point is a La Cornue range with a tall patterned backsplash of Tabarka Studio tile that matches the pale blue cabinets (Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray No. 27). Woven rattan pendants and stools bring in a little bit of the beach.

Let Light In

"I eliminate as many upper cabinets as possible to allow bigger windows and more art. It makes a kitchen feel less fitted and a little more old-school," says architect Beau Clowney.

Rise & Dine

The breakfast nook is so cozy that the couple uses it throughout the day, often as a home office. People often inquire about the oval pedestal table—Brock dreamed up the design to fit the space and had Charleston's Perrin Woodworking build it.

Tucked Away

Nestled next to the breakfast nook is a clever reinvention of the classic butler's pantry . The glass-enclosed space contains conveniences like a bar sink and second dishwasher without visually closing off the space.

Easy Breezy

Open to the kitchen, the family room features Henredon chairs chosen for their cool back view and a custom sectional made to look classic with English roll-arm styling. The white walls (Benjamin Moore's Simply White) that run through this and most rooms of the house work as a great backdrop for artwork. This large piece is by painter Shannon Wood, who lives right across the street.

Fully embracing California-style outdoor living within an oh-so-Southern space, a newly expanded screened porch flows off the family room, connected by French doors. When the weather is nice, Julia and Thomas leave the doors open so the sea breeze can filter straight through the open floor plan into the kitchen.

Central Location

The house is situated around a courtyard, the feature the couple loves most. This was also the main reason they repainted the exterior in a neutral; the previous pink was visible from nearly every room and would have limited their decorating options. "Going white meant we could introduce colors like pink inside the home instead," Julia says.

Unfussy Feminine

Enveloped in lavender-and-green Bowood chintz from Colefax and Fowler, the primary bedroom indulges Julia's love of all things botanical and floral. Curtains in a smaller, geometric motif (Quadrille's Volpi) and funky lamps on the faux-bamboo nightstands keep it all from seeming too precious or overdone.

Rosy Retreat

The home had to have at least one room done in pink, Julia's signature color. "She looks so good in it that I thought, 'Why not make it the space where she gets ready every morning?'" says Brock. The hue glows via modern cement floor tiles, a pink-painted vanity (Farrow & Ball Pink Ground), and Roman shades, but it's balanced by the clean white of the walls and tub. French doors with gold hardware open to outside, the natural light further preventing the pink from overpowering and giving the room a porch-like feel.

The freestanding tub is the perfect spot for winding down. A small painting and monogrammed Weezie towels bring in hints of blue to the space without distracting from the pink hues.

Paradise Found

The loft guest room, known as the tree house, practically begged for a canopy bed to play up its vaulted ceiling; panels made from a sheer embroidered fabric (Colefax and Fowler's Melina) add a dreamy air. "You feel like you're up in a cloud. We have this huge magnolia tree in the backyard that you can see from the windows on three walls," Julia says. Bird prints, found at an antiques mall and reframed, are configured into a gallery wall that outlines the bed's shape.

Making a Splash

As much an escape as the adjacent tree house room, this bathroom evokes Caribbean seas with its immersive, over-the-ceiling blue subway tile (the shower also features a window for some on-demand sea breeze). The Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallpaper is vinyl, so it holds up to water and humidity.

Julia Fox gives a tour around her ‘very underwhelming’ New York apartment

Julia Fox has given fans an inside look into her New York City apartment , and it’s way more relatable than viewers would’ve expected.

The Uncut Gems star posted a tour of her “very underwhelming” one-bedroom Manhattan apartment to TikTok on Wednesday, 25 January to show her fans that she may not live as glamorous as they might think.

Fox, 32, began the video by noting how she wanted to give an apartment tour because she “believes in maximum transparency” with her fans.

“I know I’m gonna get roasted but hopefully maybe someone can watch this and be like, ‘OK, maybe I’m not doing so bad,’” she said.

The native New Yorker started her apartment tour in the living room, which she had converted into her bedroom. Fox explained that she transformed the room into her bedroom so that her two-year-old son, Valentino, could have his own space to play.

  • Julia Fox says she dated Kanye West to ‘get him off’ Kim Kardashian’s ‘case’
  • Julia Fox says she’ll ‘sue’ if she sees another anti-ageing product: ‘Getting old is f***ing hot, OK?’
  • Julia Fox says she is ‘thinking’ about dating women: ‘I have a gay bone’

“I put my bed here in the living room so I could turn my bedroom into a little playroom for Valentino,” she said, as she panned the camera throughout her apartment. Fox showed off her unmade bed, as well as her “nostalgia mirror” decorated with pictures of her family and loved ones who passed.

The next stop on the apartment tour was her hallway, which was full of racks of shoes, followed by her “little bathroom” which she described as “very tiny” but “does what it’s supposed to do”.

Next, Fox showed off her kitchen, which had stacks of shoeboxes sitting in the corner.

“I also have shoeboxes in the kitchen which is very common for New Yorkers,” the Italian-American actor said.

The last stop on the tour was her son Valentino’s room, which was decorated with a loft bed and storage for his toys.

“I really wanted him to have a cute room,” Fox said, before admitting that her son prefers to sleep in her bed instead. “However he does not hang out in here at all, he only wants to be in Mama’s room. He doesn’t even sleep in there, he sleeps in bed with me.”

Fox then interrupted her apartment tour with a quick message to mom-shamers: “Yeah, we’re co-sleepers. Sue me, I don’t care.”

After showing off her living space, Fox preemptively explained why her apartment may seem small to some.

“For me, personally, I just don’t like excessive displays of wealth,” she said. “They make me feel icky, especially people that have really big houses. It’s just really wasteful when there’s so many homeless people in this country. I’m just not really like that.”

Like many New Yorkers, Fox also confessed that she has a minor mouse problem, but tries to look at it on the bright side.

“We do have a little, small mouse problem but it’s a problem depending on how you look at it,” she admitted, before clarifying in the caption that it’s just one mouse who visits her apartment. “I appreciate that at night, while we’re sleeping, they come out and clean up the crumbs that my son drops on the floor. I’m not gonna evict the mice any time soon.”

Since it was posted, Fox’s apartment tour has received 6.5m views on TikTok, as thousands of users praised Fox in the comments section for her “relatable” and” “normal” living space.

“She’s just like us,” read the top comment.

“I am legit flabbergasted that Julia Fox lives just like me. It doesn’t seem right,” another person said.

“I love this so much it’s so normal and lived in!!!!” a third person wrote, while another user called Fox a “relatable icon”.

When one person wrote, “Love your place! Looks totally awesome and spacious for NYC,” Fox responded: “I know it’s crazy that this is a big apartment for NY standards lol I grew up in a shoe box so I don’t mind it.”

“So nice to finally see a celeb home that actually feels lived in,” said someone else.

LOOK: Julia Barretto's tropical Japanese-inspired house is a true embodient of safe haven

By Thea Marie Templanza Published Sep 18, 2022 5:51 pm Updated Sep 18, 2022 5:56 pm

Julia Barretto is proud to be an old soul, and the 25-year-old's tropical Japanese-inspired house can attest to that.

In Karen Davila's YouTube vlog on Sept. 15, the actress gave her fans and the broadcaster's followers a tour of her modern three-story house infused with a mix of classy vintage and contemporary pieces.

At the ripe age of 19, Julia started planning her own home with the guidance of her mother Marjorie and her manager at that time. Adorned with glass, pristine white walls, and wood accents, this is how Julia envisioned her home that came from her own "blood, sweat—and literally tears" throughout her showbiz career, which started when she was only nine years old.

"We started building this home when I was 19, finished when I was 22," Julia told Davila. "When I was younger, I didn't know what to do with the money I was earning at first. Pero with guidance of my manager at that time and my mom, they were really encouraging me to invest."

"At first I didn't know what I was doing when I was a teenager and then my mom said, 'Julia, you might want to get a lot.' And then at first, I was so nervous," she continued. "And then years later, I started living here."  She added that she had "mandatory savings" to build it from the ground up.

The actress collaborated with her interior designer and architect to design her home. "So we started at 19, and it was important for me to be surrounded with the right people. And also, tita, the older you get, iba-iba 'yung season mo sa life and your taste changes as well," she told Davila.

Through and through, the actress made sure that everything she puts into her home has good quality. "So una palang, I really invested in good quality furniture," she continued. "But everything was budgeted pero also I don't want to be selfish. Ayoko ma-compromise 'yung life ko dito sa first house."

julia house tour

A big wooden textured door and a Wabi Sabi-inspired living room will welcome guests into her cozy abode. She added a touch of color to the cream-based spot with an abstract painting by Filipino artist Carlo Saavedra hanging right above her sofa.

For her center table, Julia opted for a Japanese-inspired masterpiece by local designer Nix Alarcon.  Adding to the zen vibe are wooden ornaments that came all the way from Baguio.

julia house tour

She continues to prove her love for homegrown brands with an eight-seater wooden dining table paired with rattan chairs, which were all crafted in Baguio. Serving as the centerpiece is a jar from the City of Pines containing twigs, which were given to her by her mom.

"Kasi I'm an old soul so gusto ko modern tapos may old touch lang," Julia said about her dining room.

julia house tour

A golden money tree is placed in a corner of the dining area, and the actress said that it was really meant to be there as she had been looking for it while building her dream home. "Naghahanap talaga ako ng art piece noong bini-build 'yung house and [the artist] said para itong abundance and blessings. Kasi money siya, tita, e," Julia told Davila.

julia house tour

Right beside her dining area is an open, neutral-toned kitchen. The area features gray cabinets and appliances, with a balance of white countertops. One of the room's highlights is its contemporary exhaust fan at the center, which doubles as a unique lamp.

julia house tour

Next to Julia's kitchen is a patio that features water-resistant chairs mostly made out of rattan and an abaca rug to achieve the tropical Japanese vibe. Adding to the fresh and natural energy brought about by the place are the tall bamboo stalks Julia and Marjorie used to decorate her white wall.

Not only do the bamboo stalks serve as a nice decor in her lanai, Julia said it also makes the house "mahangin," She added, "At saka privacy 'di ba, kasi puro glass my house."

julia house tour

Asked if she has plans of moving into a bigger house in the future, Julia admitted that she wanted a big family. "Pero this one, like, gusto ko lang masabi na I was able to build a house for myself at some point. 'Tas yung family house, kami na ng asawa ko ‘yun." she said.

It can be recalled that the actress revealed in the April 21 YouTube vlog of her boyfriend Gerald Anderson that she's willing to leave showbiz "anytime" to start a family.

Julia said she is happy with what she has achieved in her career as an actress but is dreaming of a "simple quiet life" with her own family in the future.  Gerald confirmed his relationship with Julia in a tell-all interview with Boy Abunda on March 5, 2021.

Don’t worry; 72 hours is enough to get a glimpse of the vibrant and expressive side of Moscow.

Russia. Just the mention of the name conjures images of red flags, vast spaces, and deadly distances.

Moscow is the heart of Russia, with an incredibly turbulent history, gorgeous architecture and slightly strange people with a mystic Russian soul.

While visiting Moscow, the brutal history is palpable. But, with so many shops, restaurants, and malls, the city is rightfully considered a perfect destination for a city break .

Moscow’s relatively compact city center is teeming with sights: theaters, museums, boulevards, and beautiful city squares. But because of that, planning a short visit to Moscow can be quite overwhelming.

I fell in love with Moscow a long time ago and I want to use this article to point out my favorite sights and spots in the city.

My 3-day Moscow itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors and those who want to see as much of the city as possible. So let’s get started!

NOTE:   This article is currently not being updated because of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

3 Days in Moscow – Itinerary

Day 1: iconic moscow.

3 days in Moscow itinerary

There is no doubt that the Red Square is the heart of Moscow and almost any trip to this city starts from here .

The square has an abundance of sights to see and you should probably expect to spend at least 2-3 hours here if you want to explore every nook and cranny.

Tip: Book a Red Square, Kremlin & Metro Tour to skip the line and learn more about Moscow’s incredible history.

The massive Lenin mausoleum, the opulent St Basil Cathedral, the GUM department store, and the State Historical Museum became integral parts of the architectural ensemble.

And depending on where you enter the Red square, those four sights are the first things to see.

Three days in Moscow itinerary

Just a stone’s throw away from the Red Square there is a majestic Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

Originally built in 1883 it was then demolished in 1931 during the Soviet period and finally rebuilt between 1994-1997.

This awe-inspiring cathedral is one of the tallest Orthodox churches in the world . And it has a convenient location for exploring the rest of the city.

End the first of your three days in Moscow by exploring the area near the Old Arbat Street. This is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Moscow. It dates back to the 15th century and allows you to enjoy the authentic ambiance of the Old City.

Located just a few blocks away there is the New Arbat Street. While it is much younger and less fancy than its older counterpart the street is filled with some of the most vibrant restaurants and liveliest nightclubs in Moscow .

Both Old and New Arbat streets have a wide range of restaurants with food catering for all budgets.

Day 2: Beyond Red Square. Moscow’s Parks.

On the second day of this Moscow itinerary, I suggest exploring Moscow’s green lung.

In fact, there are way too many parks to visit in just one day, thus I will only mention my favorite ones.

3 days in Moscow: what not to miss: Gorky Park

Named after Maxim Gorky this is one of the trendiest and most hipster-friendly areas in Moscow .

Originally opened in 1928 the park underwent a massive transformation that has turned it into a charming recreation ground with an open-air cinema theater, bicycle- and skate-rental spots, and contemporary public art projects.

If you visit the Russian capital in winter, make sure to pay this park a visit because it offers one of the best ice skating rinks in Moscow .

Kolomenskoye Park

A 3 days Moscow itinerary: what not to miss - Kolomenskoye Park

Conveniently situated in the southeast of Moscow this huge park is both an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage site .

With an impressive number of original buildings, churches, bell towers, and pavilions, Kolomenskoye dates back to the 14th century and the Ascension church to the mid-16th century.

It may take up to four hours to explore the area near the church so you can easily combine these two parks in one trip.

Day 3: Hidden Gems in Moscow

The patriarch ponds.

What to do on day 3 in Moscow

This tranquil and charming neighborhood next to Mayakovaskaya Metro station has long been known as the area popular with expatriates. However, only a handful of tourists make their way here .

I absolutely recommend visiting this tiny park especially if you’re a Bulgakov fan.

The residential area near the Patriarch Ponds is where the conversation between Berlioz, Ivan Bezdomny, and Woland has been situated by Mikhail Bulgakov in his popular novel “The Master and Margarita”.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

A 3 day Moscow Itinerary - what to do in Moscow

Situated not far from Moscow Zoo and the Embassy of Poland, this neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Church is one of the largest and most beautiful Catholic cathedrals in Russia .

Built in the early 20th century, the building has had a fairly complicated history. It was shut down and suffered terrible damage from aerial bombings during the Second World War but was restored in 1990.

These days you can attend one of the masses offered in a range of languages and enjoy classical music concerts free of charge in this lesser-known architectural gem.

There you have it – the perfect 3-Day Moscow Itinerary!

Tip: Save time and money by getting the 1, 2, or 3-day city pass in Moscow .

I can also highly recommend going on a guided tour if you want to learn more about Moscow or check out one of these activities in Moscow:

How To Get To Moscow’s City Center

How to get from the airport to Moscow

With four international airports located not far from the city, there are many convenient ways to reach the city center from any of them.

Chances are you will arrive at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo airport as only a handful of flights arrive at Zhukovsky airport.

The Aeroexpress train is the fastest (and my favorite) way to reach Moscow city center from the Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo airport. Trains run every 30 minutes between around 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. and cost around $7 USD (500 RUB) one way.

With frequent heavy traffic in Moscow, the train is definitely the best way to get to the city center at a predictable time.

But, if you travel on a tight budget, there is a way to save money on transportation . All airports are connected with the nearest subway station by bus. These are not that comfy but really cheap. You could travel for less than $3 USD one way.

Keep in mind, however, that if you choose to take the bus you’ll have to use the metro to get from the outskirts of Moscow to the center. Watch for bus 851 if you arrive at Sheremetyevo airport and bus 308 if you arrive at Domodedovo airport.

Getting Around in Moscow

How to get around in Moscow

Moscow’s ticketing system for their public transport can be confusing especially if you’ve never visited the city before and don’t speak Russian.

It is always good to remember that most stations and ticketing machines can get ridiculously crowded during peak hours.

I can’t recommend purchasing a Troika card enough when it comes to getting around. You can get a Troika card that is valid for 3 days for less than $7 USD, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to save money and avoid wasting time in line.

This reusable card allows you to use the Moscow metro, as well as Moscow’s Central Ring, busses, trams, and trolley busses. There is no limit to the number of rides during the validity of your card.

How to get the Troika card: you can buy this card at any metro kiosk.

While they do have English announcements in the metro on most lines, signs at Metro stations are often written only in Russian. Getting a printed copy of the metro map might come in handy to overcome the language barrier and find your way around.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Where to stay in Moscow

When you’re planning a 3-day Moscow itinerary, you’ll find out there are literally thousands of places to stay.

Accommodation in Moscow ranges from luxury hotels to budget hostels that often have both shared facilities and private rooms.

To save on accommodation I recommend using the Ostrovok hotel booking engine. They often offer better deals on hotels in Moscow than websites like Booking.com.

If you’re looking for budget hotels in Moscow, I recommend 999 Gold Hotel and Orange House Hotel near the Victory Park.

Airbnb and Couchsurfing are also popular in Moscow and most of the hosts speak English well.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Moscow!

Going to visit Moscow next week as I don’t know much about it so I was looking for a blog to know the best things to do there. Thanks for this information as now I know what to do there.

Hey, Alyson!

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit at any time of the year! I visited it both in winter and summer and every season has its appointed uses and advantages.

Gorky Park is one of my favorite spots to hang out in Moscow and it can be easily reached by metro because things have evolved. Now they do have most of the signs (including the ones on the floor) written in English, so chances are you won’t get lost in the metro the way you could several years ago!

We did this 20 years ago! This takes me right back. Moscow was the first stop of our first RTW. We did all of the above but it was winter, snow on the ground. I loved Gorky Park, so atmospheric, like a spy movie. We had to remember the shapes of the letters to find the right stations. It looks like nothing much has changed!
