'How does WhatsApp work internationally?': How to use WhatsApp internationally for free with Wi-Fi

  • You can use WhatsApp internationally for free with Wi-Fi; depending on your cellular plan, you may incur international charges for using cellular data on WhatsApp.
  • To preclude international data fees, you can turn roaming off on your phone and still use Wi-Fi.
  • This story is a part of Business Insider's Guide to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has made international connectivity easier than ever. Since WhatsApp uses an internet connection, it's possible to get around international calling restrictions and fees.

How to use WhatsApp internationally

Luckily, as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi, WhatsApp chats will always be free.

Also, while you can be charged a fee per text message using your standard cellular service abroad, or be held to a limited amount of texts, your WhatsApp messages operate over your data plan.

Most international cellular plans have varying amounts of data available, and in some international plans you can get unlimited data.

If you didn't sign up for international data and don't want to incur additional fees, turn off data roaming on your phone, since international data roaming fees can add up quickly. This means that you'll only be able to use WhatsApp when you're connected to Wi-Fi.

For more information, read our articles on turning off data roaming for iPhone and Android devices .

If you're unsure of your rates for international data roaming or calling, contact your carrier for exact details.

Leer en español: Los mejores youtubers latinoamericanos de viajes para ver en cuarentena

The coronavirus pandemic changed many issues. Therefore, we saw that traveling is currently impossible, in the sense that it is a danger for a person to break the quarantine to explore new territories, since, due to the high possibility of contagions, it can be harmful both to himself and to others.

This can be seen in what the Argentine media Clarín mentions, saying that 96% of the countries in the world imposed restrictions on travel. Therefore, all people who have an adventurous spirit should settle for virtual material from people who have previously traveled.

In this sense, we decided to make a compilation of the best Spanish-speaking YouTubers who have a series of travel-based videos. Most will show different aspects of the experience of discovering something new, whether within a specialized field or not, which is why we invite you to meet them.

Luisito Comunica

Luisito Comunica is one of the main figures on YouTube. His fame transcends the videos, to the point where various media are interested in his personal figure. For example, the TN media comments that the Mexican would be in a relationship with a Venezuelan model, due to different clues that came out on his social networks.

Apart from his private life, the reality is that we are talking about truly popular content. Thanks to his enormous charisma and his ability to investigate, watching Luisito Comunica's videos will make you feel authentically refreshed. You will not only be nourished by foreign cultures but also laugh because of his occurrences.

Alan Around The World

If you're looking for quality content, you're probably interested in what Alan Around the World does. Basically, he is a Mexican YouTuber who travels to exotic destinations.

Through all his videos you will notice that he narrates his experiences in the first person, providing transcendent information in a transparent way as if a friend was telling you. For example, he recommends which sites are good to visit and which ones you shouldn't waste your time on.

We move to a more niche sector. In this case, we are talking about an Argentine hamburger fanatic, who constantly tries to discover the new trends of this culture through different blogs about his experiences in the United States.

Although it is not a strictly travel channel, it does have an excellently produced documentary series, known as Hamburgers, where he traveled with a group of enthusiasts to discover the best American menus, making reviews and commenting on all their impressions. Whether or not they are your favorite dish, it is recommended to see the passion with which they talk about what they love.

Bajoneando por Hay

Although we continue in the field of food, we are not talking here about a specific sector, such as hamburgers, but about a much broader field. The protagonist of this channel is Ramita, who created this channel that shows different gastronomic experiences in different places.

For example, the newspaper El Litoral mentions that prior to the pandemic she had visited the Carnivals of Corrientes to try the typical dishes of the place. The best thing about this channel? The variety of things that she tries, since she does not only eat gourmet meals but also down to earth ones.

Te lo resumo así no más.

Lastly, we are talking about an example well known for his summary videos, but which also has his own travel section. Here we are talking about a channel by the Argentine Jorge Pinarello, which, as mentioned by the website of El Observador de Uruguay, has millions of subscribers from all over Latin America waiting for his videos regularly.

The section, known as "I vlog it like this" shows the experiences of him and his partner during a trip through Europe. There he will take us through different typical places of the most iconic cities, with a very characteristic humorous touch (especially for the raspy tone of his voice), which became essential in his videos, serving in this case to narrate all his stories.

From a WhatsApp Channel to Latin America’s Latest Online Travel Startup

Matthew Parsons, Skift

July 10th, 2020 at 2:00 PM EDT

Despite rising coronavirus cases and airlines on the brink of collapse, Milla Travel could still make its mark in a region that's long overdue for modernization in the travel management space.

Online travel newcomer Milla Travel wants to shake up Latin America’s travel management landscape — and it sees no better time to do it than during a pandemic.

Founder Antonia San Martin said she’s identified a gap in the market because corporate travel there hasn’t evolved in line with the rest of the world. Most bookings are made using offline travel agencies, and the market is highly fragmented, apart from some of the larger corporate travel agencies having a presence there.

Meanwhile, the pandemic has forced companies and travelers to adapt more to digital in Latin America.

San Martin, who’s based in Chile, said the countries are “about 100 years behind what’s going on in Europe and the U.S.”

“I investigated a bit, and most of the companies here hate the solutions their companies are giving them,” she added. She speaks from experience, having traveled for business a lot during previous roles at Nike and Heineken.

The region might be ripe for disruption, but by officially launching in April this year after starting out as a WhatsApp channel, Milla Travel is arguably starting out at the worst possible moment. Coronavirus cases are rising sharply in Latin America. Brazil has had more than 1.7 million confirmed cases, the second highest global tally after the U.S., with Chile, Mexico and Peru battling major outbreaks.

“There was already a recession on its way pre-Covid,” said Maren Hanschke, president of FCM and Flight Centre, Mexico and Latin America Network. “Last year we saw a slowdown in travel volume at about 18 percent to 20 percent, due to the economic situation and the fluctuation in our markets. Companies are worried, and what is more concerning is the fact governments aren’t straight with the information provided about infection rates, where to travel and how we can really protect ourselves.”

The region’s airlines are also in trouble. In the past two months alone, four Latin American carriers have gone into Chapter 11 in the U.S., including LATAM . However, this allows them to financially restructure without impacting travelers, Hanschke argued. “With this initiative, airlines are ‘allowed’ to reinvent, restructure, create a leaner structure and renegotiate better and longer payment terms for commitments with suppliers and vendors,” she said. “As local governments in Latin America are not being supportive, airlines have to get support in the U.S. via Chapter 11 filing.”

Positive Thinking

However, San Martin thinks coronavirus is working in its favor, because it has forced many countries to go digital. E-commerce has boomed following the lockdowns. Hanschke, meanwhile, thinks Latin America, overall, was already fairly tech savvy. “There are a lot of startups and online leisure platforms that have been developed in Argentina, some in Mexico and Brazil,” she said.

But San Martin claims larger companies in Chile are now watching the startups and picking up on their trends, including those related to the way they manage travel; word of mouth is key, and she says even the Chilean government called a couple of weeks ago to find out more about what Milla Travel could offer.

On the airline side, despite the financial difficulties, coronavirus could force carriers to embrace new ways of working. “We’ve been talking a lot with LATAM (airline),” San Martin said. “We’re updated on what’s going on. It’s a terrible time, but companies also need new tools now, and better tools, to build their business travel. It will restart. We have to survive, and give the insights that this new corporate travel movement is happening.”

Milla Travel took part in an Air Tech Player Responses to Covid-19 webinar , alongside Amadeus, on July 9. Organized by the International Air Transport Association, the event series showcases technology players and their solutions that could help airlines address revenue protection, cost reduction, and market stimulation/rebound scenarios.

During the webinar, San Martin highlighted how a 1 percent impact on corporate volumes impacts airline profitability by 10 percent.

Ready For a Comeback

Once the pandemic passes, San Martin hopes corporate travel will bounce back quickly as companies look to recover.

Her startup has secured funding from Planatus Ventures , and has a growing list of clients, including Fintual , Hackmetrix and Mudango . They signed up because they soon want to get their sales teams on the road, San Martin claimed, and will want to know exactly where their employees are. These technology-orientated companies represent ideal customers — startups that once traveling again could be spending around $1 million a year with Milla Travel.

From a content perspective, Milla Travel is taking the New Distribution Capability route where possible, and working with another startup, aggregator Duffel , to plug into several international airlines.

San Martin thinks airlines that do embrace New Distribution Capability have a big opportunity to “unlock their capabilities”, with the standard allowing for a better workflow with richer content and a better chance to sell more ancillaries. Upselling will be important as airlines look to claw back lost revenue, with Singapore Airlines one of the latest carriers to signal its intent .

Where that technology standard isn’t an option, it uses “direct partnership connections” with the airlines as a stop gap. That’s currently the case with LATAM.

This level of integration wasn’t always the case, though. Milla Travel has significantly evolved since its inception several months ago — so much so San Martin said she’s embarrassed by its original, rudimental platform. “It was practically WhatsApp with a connection into online travel agency Despegar . That was it,” she said. “It was a terrible minimum viable product, I’m pretty ashamed of it.”

But now, for the corporate traveler, there’s expense reporting, online boarding passes for contactless travel through airports, advice on borders thanks to a tie-up with e-visa firm Sherpa , and — going back to its roots — 24-hour support on WhatsApp. “We’re creating a bridge between business travelers, travel managers and financial officers,” San Martin said.

The new company is targeting Latin America first, and will then look to other continents, as well as aim to secure seed funding. Going beyond borders means it will compete with the likes of Taptrip and TravelPerk , who similarly have the small and medium-sized market in their sights. But if it can make it through the harsh business environment of its home market, whatever comes next probably won’t seem that daunting.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the company will seek Series C funding. It will seek seed funding.

Volcano Trail: Waves & Local Ways

This is a whirlwind sightseeing tour and not a carefree backpacking trip. We had hours of travel on the bus almost every day, and there were multiple days that had bus-boat-bus transfers, so consider your travel stamina before you sign up. It is not an optimal trip for those prone to motion-sickness. We had half the group continuing on from an earlier GAdventures segment in Mexico/Belize and by the time our tour started in Guatemala they were mostly exhausted and burned out on visiting ruins. If you want a beach-party tour I suggest joining the Mexico/Belize tours, while if you want an adventure/adrenaline tour I suggest doing GAdventure's Costa Rica tour. This Volcano tour was more of a passport-stamping tour and we had too many cities where we only spent a single night. Our guide was great and very helpful with border crossings. I don't regret going on the trip but I now know this style of travel is not for me.

Central American Journey: Rainforests & Ruins Tour

Central American Journey: Rainforests & Ruins

The trip was great, well organized and the locations selected for stopovers all were really nice especially in Nicaragua. The activity selections were quite diverse so what ever you felt like doing you had many options. Accommodation for the whole trip was fine, all the hostels and hotels were clean and I had no issues. Our tour leader Cappie was quite a character. He did an excellent job of answering all our questions and helping to organize everyone. He seemed to as well really enjoy partaking in activities with us which made it a lot of fun and a overall really enjoyable experience .

PERU EXPRESS - 10 days (Lima- Cusco & Puno) with Domestic Flights

The 10 day tour was exhausting but fun! Leoned kept in constant daily touch with updates and information on Whatsapp, which was very helpful. The 10 days express tour packs in a lot of early morning (4am) travel to high altitudes including the hikes to Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain. I had a lot of altitude sickness but thankfully the guides on each tour were super helpful in making it easier for me and letting me take my own time. They also helped facilitate alternates to the hike such as taking a horse or bike when I was too sick to do the 1-1.5 hr hikes. The transportation was mostly comfortable, but some of it was a bit too cramped, especially for those 8-10hr round trips. I am average height but had to occasionally sit sideways for hours as the seats didn't have enough space. This wasn't always possible as sometimes all the seats were filled up in the tourist van. We also did have incidents where the taxi was late for a pick up or drop and I had to follow up with Leoned as we would have missed our bus or were waiting for our pick up for over 30mins. However, when you travel, such things are to be expected occasionally and so I still think it was worth it. Overall it was a great trip inspite of some inconveniences, I am glad I went with Waman adventures on this one!

My husband and I enjoyed this 14 day Costa Rican tour by G adventures. The itineraries were excellent and well planned and on time. Sarah was an amazing guide who catered towards the group. I would recommend this tour for anyone wanting to travel through CA, the border crossings are quite difficult. The price of this tour is worth it.
Excellent tour giving a great taste of Central America. Tour guides Marlon and Mane were fantastic. Guatemala was my favourite, hiking and camping on a ln active volcano is something else. Decent itinerary. No complaints.

International photographer

I love Cuba and photography so much and I decided to merge my two great loves in order to drive other photographers through a special experience where we will reach the heart of an unique culture in the world and the marvelous colours of the beautiful land which hosts it.

Professional photographer since 1999, I’m specialized in outdoor sports photography.

I have been the official photographer of international events like world’ sailing championship star class and of the International Polo Cup in Livigno, I have been working for years taking photos of the connection between sports, animals and nature.

My photos were pubblished on national and international magazines including Corriere della Sera, Quotidiano Nazionale, Elle and Vogue.

For years, outside of work, I have been developing my passion about street photography.

I have been visiting Cuba assiduously since 2007, I spent in the island at least 2 of the last 15 years and I deeply know a lot of aspects which are not “turistic”

I speak fluently English and Spanish languages.

I reached 1974 meters of Pico Turquino, the highest mountain in Cuba and I admired the coral reef from 25 metres of depth at Playa Santa Lucia.

We will start with a rewarding visit in Havana through its ancient and modern streets, characterized by cultural and religous values, which stayed intact over the years and the different historical periods. In fact, Ernest Hemingway said that the only ones that could beat it in terms of beauty were Venice and Paris.

We will go on with Vinales , where you will be enchanted by its incomparrable beauty. Thanks to the presence of the Mogotes, which only exist in few places in the world, they look like sentinels who protect the majesty of the valley. Beyond its natural power that emanates, you will have the opportunity to admire an outdoor museum and take photos of the best tobacco plantations in the world .

We will continue our trip towards the biggest swamp of the Carribean , protected in many ways, especially by its status of “Reserve of Unesco’s biosphere and site of ramsar”, where you will enjoy nature in its purest form,a true eden for naturalists and birdlife photo lovers.

We will then reach the third city founded by spanish monarchy in cuba: Trinidad . With its title of “world craft city” it’s one of the better preserved colonial cities of America, an urban and architectural jewel of the continent. Walking through its streets will make you feel like being in a city that seems to have stopped in time, in the XVI century, with its cobbled roads, where expert weavers and seamstresses offer their works hard to be refused.

On the outskirts of city, the valley of the ingenios, world heritage, located between sea and mountains, a true archeological monument of cuban sugar industry .

Machalilla National Park - Ecuador

BANNER-ECUADOR-MACHALI-INLGES

BEST OF LATIN AMERICA TRIPS

Each Latin American country has the advantage of being diverse, with complex yet impressive geographic structures. Among the possible amazing trips in ECUADOR , we can mention that in the morning we can kayak in the crater-lake of an extinct volcano at 3,700 meters above sea level and in the afternoon enjoying the sunset on one of the Pacific beaches. Or from a volcano to descend by bicycle from 4,200 m.a.s.l. to finish the day in the Amazon basin. However, for nature lovers, the ultimate richness is found in the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon, regions that are relatively few hours away from each other in this amazing country.

Meanwhile, in PERU , perhaps the most remarkable and impressive are the hundreds of archaeological remains, among which MACHU PICCHU stands out as one of the «Seven Wonders of the World», but the Inca Empire ended only 500 years ago, and in Peru there are ruins and traces of much more ancient and impressive cultures, as well as exotic places such as the 2,000 year old geoglyphs of Nasca, the Ballestas Islands, Lake Titicaca and the Huacachina Oasis mentioned in the newspaper «The Telegraph» (2007) as one of the 21 most impressive destinations in the world. And to make our vacation even more stunning, with only 3 additional days of travel we visit in BOLIVIA the impressive ruins of Tihuanaco, ruins that have perplexed today’s engineers who cannot build stone structures weighing more than 20 tons as perfectly as those built by this culture almost a thousand years ago.

Our Zicasso tour operator's suggestions and planning for my first trip to Belize were beyond amazing and outstanding, especially given the short amount of time given for planning and then our requested change of dates about a month before flying. Together, we put together a land package that included the Mayan ruins and cave tubing. The private transportation driver who took us to the mountain was patient in waiting for our delayed flight and knowledgeable in pointing out areas of interest on the two-hour trip. We stayed at a hotel which was quaint, clean, and beautiful. The staff were completely service-driven. Our driver/guide for the Mayan ruins and cave tubing was extremely polite and so knowledgeable. We loved him! Cave tubing is way too much fun and I am looking forward to going back to do it again. Our travel agent added an unexpected and welcomed tour through an iguana conservation project located at the hotel. The small plane/flight to Ambergris Caye was easy and gave great views. The inn right on the beach was cute, quaint, and small. It was in a great location to get away from the business of San Pedro by walking along the beachside or getting into the hustle/bustle of the town by walking one block. We took two snorkel excursions on which both crews were extremely knowledgeable, polite, and very nice. One had us going out on a sailboat, which was a pleasant surprise. We were able to rent a golf cart directly through the hotel, whose staff were kind and provided exceptional customer service, to travel to Secret Beach. One minor thing was being on the second floor of the hotel instead of the ground floor, but we completely understand that we were probably lucky to have even got a room there due to our late changes. We are more than excited about planning a trip to go back next year!

My husband, four adult children, and I had such a wonderful family trip! We worked with our Zicasso tour operator and she was extremely proactive, thorough, and responsive. Within a day or so after our initial introductory conversation, she sent a proposed itinerary, which was a great jumping-off point for planning. Even though we were extremely slow to book and the busy travel season was upon us, she never pressured us, and instead made suggestions to plan the best trip possible. Once in Colombia, the travel team stayed in touch with us every step of the way through WhatsApp, including sending us boarding passes for our in-country flights. They even left us a wonderful gift at the hotel as a memento of our trip. I would highly recommend our travel company to plan any Colombia trip!

Overall, I believe the travel agency did a good job of setting everything up. All the guides showed up on time and ensured we reached our scheduled destinations. The hotels were clean and comfortable. Overall, it was a positive trip and I would recommend using this travel company.

Zicasso’s tour operator made our rather last-minute trip to Costa Rica not only seamless, but just what we wanted out of our return trip to this beautiful country! Our travel agent was quick to respond to any questions we had and took all of the stress of planning a trip out of the equation. Our trip was curated to cover different environments and landscapes, so we really felt we got a comprehensive feel for the country. And we absolutely can't wait to go back as there is so much more to explore!

Our Zicasso tour company arranged a truly exceptional trip for us, enabling us to enjoy the bustle of Buenos Aires and the spectacular beauty of Patagonia in less than two weeks. Our requests were accommodated as best as possible in the context of a busy travel season there. The hotels were great, the guides professional and knowledgeable, and all the private adventures exceeded our expectations. Communication was somewhat of a challenge. Our travel agent was very responsive throughout the trip, but I never heard directly from drivers or guides, despite assurance they would contact me. I raised this every day, but none of them connected with me. Rather, they chose to communicate with one of the men traveling in our group. I suppose it's a gender bias thing, but it was annoying. Nonetheless, everything went as planned and without a hitch. The drivers and guides showed up exactly when scheduled and the whole itinerary was fulfilled to the letter.

We loved Panama. The hotels and restaurants were fabulous, and the people were gracious, even though most did not speak English. Google's translator was a necessity. Overall, the tour company was not what I have come to expect from traveling with Zicasso. The communication going back and forth in planning the trip was difficult. At one point, they lost track of our payments and had to find the funds. I was under the impression they were based in Panama, which they were not. We never got a call to see how we were doing. Some of the planned trips needed to be changed at the last minute because we didn't get the information on how difficult the trip would be (the trip to the volcano). What was then scheduled for us was not very interesting. I will say our agent did try to accommodate us. He sent fruit to the hotel and tried to stay in touch by email. We loved what he planned for us, like Monkey Island and the Embera village, and our hotel accommodations were lovely! Also, they planned a cooking experience with a charming chef … fun! All our transportation was on time and the drivers very nice. Our guides were adequate, but communicating was often hard.

Our Zicasso travel agent was wonderful! From the first interaction we had with her, we felt heard, seen, and understood. She responded to our wants and offered guidance when we wavered. We would have never considered a mountain-bike ride and absolutely loved getting muddy. Each guide, in Lima and the Andes, was personable and knowledgeable. We felt well taken care of from start to finish!

Overall, our trip was great. However, the communication we received from our Zicasso agent after we completed our booking was less than desirable. When the final payment was due, he gave us two days to get to the bank for the money order. A heads-up that the final payment was going to be due on this day would have been great so we could have changed our work schedule to accommodate getting to the bank before it closed. When I asked him for a packing list, I received an email back from him stating they normally do not send that out until 10 days prior to your departure date. I need more time than that to order in what I would need for the trip. Also, it would be helpful to know our domestic flight times and information prior to getting to the airport on the day of the flights. We received an itinerary, but nothing about flights your company made for us. The guides and drivers he set up for us were fabulous.

COVID-19 information [updated Jan 13, 2021] >

Coronavirus Updates

Updated January 13, 2021

If you need to cancel your reservation due to COVID-19, please contact your consultant or store directly or call us at 1-876-906-3140 to reach one of our travel consultants.

We're Reopening

After sufficiently preparing our enhanced health protocols, Caribbean and Latin Travel Consultant Ltd and its partners are reopening some of our office, with more to follow shortly. Keep in mind that you can continue to connect with us remotely over the phone, by email, or through virtual video consultation.

We look forward to seeing you in person again to help you plan all of your future travels.

Caribbean and Latin Travel Consultant Ltd is monitoring the current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the impact on travelers. The health and welfare of our customers is our top priority, and that’s why we want to make sure we keep you informed of important updates. The situation is changing daily, but we’re on top of it, and we are here for you now more than ever!

Below are some important information and guidance to help you confidently make decisions regarding upcoming and potential travel.

Please do not hesitate to contact your trusted travel consultant if you have any questions or concerns about travel. These are unique and uncertain times for travelers, but you can find peace of mind knowing that your dedicated travel professional is standing by to provide you with expert advice and support.

New COVID-19 Policy for Re-Entry into the United States

Effective January 26, 2021, the United States will require that all air passengers entering the country provide a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding their flight as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .

We are working closely with our travel supplier partners including hotels, airlines, and ground transportation operators to help provide you with options for your travel plans. We will be communicating the most up to date information as we receive it on this page, so please check back frequently for updates. In the meantime, please be sure to review the CDC FAQ’s regarding this new policy .

If you have a trip booked or are planning to travel outside of the United States within the next 30-60 days, please know we are prioritizing customers with upcoming bookings based on departure date, and thank you in advance for your patience as we work through all impacted travelers. We are currently experiencing an extremely high call volume as we navigate through the newly announced policy with our customers.

Traveler Resources Hub

In the rapidly changing landscape of travel amid COVID-19, we understand the significance of up-to-date information. To best provide you with the knowledge you need, we’ve gathered a number of important resources, including links to review the health and safety measures of travel providers. From packing and preparation to the rules and regulations for returning home, everything you need to plan your perfect trip is here.

Canceling or Modifying Travel Plans

Our Travel Consultants are available to assist you, should you have questions regarding your upcoming travel, and they are just a phone call away—easily accessible with no hold times. Most of our hotel partners, cruise line partners, tour operator partners, and all major airlines have introduced new flexible change and cancellation policies regarding upcoming trips. Each trip is unique and each has its own policies that you need to be aware of, so please contact your travel consultant if you have an upcoming booking that you would like to discuss.

Separately, Liberty Travel launched Peace of Mind Packages . Built in collaboration with more than a dozen hotel partners and major U.S. airlines, our Peace of Mind Packages provide you with relaxed change and cancellation polices for NEW bookings to a variety of destinations with travel available through the rest of the year. There are some great travel deals out in the market currently and these packages will give you the peace of mind you might be looking for, in case your plans need to be changed.

Insurance Coverage

We always encourage customers to purchase travel insurance, regardless of the circumstance. Each travel insurance policy is different and can have exclusions in the case of an epidemic, such as COVID-19. There are policies in the market that will protect customers for cancellation for “any reason” or “any time,” and these policies have a broader range of reasons a customer can cancel and receive a percentage of their trip’s cost back. It is critically important that as a traveler you understand the exclusions of the policies you are buying; most plans, including Cancel Anytime plans, contain general exclusions from coverage for any loss directly or indirectly due to any loss, condition, or event that was known or foreseeable when the plan was purchased, or due to an epidemic.

The rapid and vast spread of the virus will likely trigger new travel disruptions and policy changes as governments and airlines take extraordinary steps to limit the spread of COVID-19. We will continue to monitor the situation daily and provide you with periodic updates.

Applying For or Renewing Your Passport

If you need to apply for or renew your U.S. passport for international travel, please read the Department of State's current advisory on passport operations in response to COVID-19 . Because of public health measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, U.S. passport operations are extremely limited. According to the Department of State, if you apply or renew now, you will experience significant delays of several months to receive your U.S. passport and the return of your citizenship evidence documents (such as birth certificates or naturalization certificates).

US Department of State Global Level 4 Health Advisory Lifted

The US State Department has lifted their Global Level 4 “Do Not Travel” Advisory that was put in place on Thursday, March 19th. In its place, the State Department is returning to its previous system of country-level advisories (click for more info). The US State Department is continuing to recommend U.S. citizens exercise caution when traveling abroad due to the ongoing and fluid nature of the pandemic.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
