Mary J. Blige understands why Flavor Flav compared her writing style to Taylor Swift .
The Public Enemy icon likened the two musicians' artistries in a January interview with HOT 97, saying they both write about relatable real-life experiences — and Blige feels the comparison is apt.
"I mean, I love Taylor Swift. She sings about what's going on in her life," the R&B icon, 53, tells PEOPLE. "It's kind of similar because she definitely gives you a piece of a relationship in a minute and whatever she may be dealing with. And that's just her therapy. That's just her way of expressing herself through her song, and people relate."

"It's definitely kind of the same thing," adds Blige, who performed alongside Swift in 2015 as a special guest on her 1989 World Tour. "I use my music as my therapy and a way to escape, or a way to express myself and just say how I'm feeling. What else are we going to do?"
Flav, 64, has been quite the vocal Swiftie since attending the Detroit stop of her Eras Tour last year, and he spoke about why his appreciation for the "Karma" musician's songwriting runs deep in an interview with HOT 97’s Ebro in the Morning earlier this year.
"She’s writing a lot about her, you know, experiences that she goes through in life. Just like Mary J. Blige — you know what I’m saying?" said the Flavor of Love star in January.

He added at the time, "Mary writes about her experiences that she goes through in life, then when she gets up there on that stage, and she sings those songs, mostly every single woman in that audience relates to Mary."

Blige is currently gearing up for the third iteration of her annual Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit , which takes place at various venues around New York City from May 10-12. The three-day event will feature performances from the "Family Affair" singer as well as Jill Scott , Fat Joe , 50 Cent and Tiffany Haddish , among other stars.

Following two years in Atlanta, she's excited to take the festival to her hometown of the Big Apple. "It means so much to bring it home because this is where I wanted it to be originally, but we ended up in Atlanta for two years, and it was successful," she told PEOPLE.
"I love Atlanta. Atlanta's home too, but it just feels amazing to have it at home where I was born and raised. All my family and friends are here, and it feels amazing," added Blige.

Music | Mary J. Blige, Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, A Tribe Called Quest and Foreigner get into Rock Hall
By MARK KENNEDY | AP Entertainment Writer
NEW YORK — Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang and Ozzy Osbourne have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame , a class that also includes folk-rockers Dave Matthews Band and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton .
Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton earned the Musical Influence Award, while the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield will get the Musical Excellence Award. Pioneering music executive Suzanne de Passe won the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
“Rock ‘n’ roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”
The induction ceremony will be held Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It will stream live on Disney+ with an airing on ABC at a later date and available on Hulu the next day.
Those music acts nominated this year but didn’t make the cut included Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, the late Sinéad O’Connor , soul-pop singer Sade, Britpoppers Oasis, hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim and alt-rockers Jane’s Addiction.
There had been a starry push to get Foreigner — with the hits “Urgent” and “Hot Blooded” — into the hall, with Mark Ronson, Jack Black, Slash, Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney all publicly backing the move. Ronson’s stepfather is Mick Jones, Foreigner’s founding member, songwriter and lead guitarist.
Four of the eight nominees — Cher, Foreigner, Frampton and Kool & the Gang — were on the ballot for the first time.
Cher — the only artist to have a No. 1 song in each of the past six decades — and Blige, with eight multi-platinum albums and nine Grammy Awards, will help boost the number of women in the hall, which critics say is too low.
Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible for induction.
Nominees were voted on by more than 1,000 artists, historians and music industry professionals. Fans voted online or in person at the museum, with the top five artists picked by the public making up a “fans’ ballot” that was tallied with the other professional ballots.
Last year, Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Chaka Khan, “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius, Kate Bush and the late George Michael were some of the artists who got into the hall .

No more drama? Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mary J. Blige says next album is ‘probably’ her last
M ary J. Blige is surely feeling more than “Just Fine” — after the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul was announced as one of the 2024 inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Sunday night.
But for the Yonkers, New York native, the enshrinement into musical immortality may be coming at the end of an illustrious career that began with her groundbreaking debut album, 1992’s “What’s the 411?”
“I’m actually in the studio right now recording more music, and I’m having fun,” Blige, 53, told People.
“This is another album,” she added, “and it’s probably my last studio album.”
Say what now?
“Everybody says that,” she added with a laugh. “I mean, OK. I guess it’s not then.”
But seriously, folks, Blige isn’t making any commitments beyond the follow-up to her last LP, 2022’s “Good Morning Gorgeous,” which was nominated for six Grammys , including Album of the Year, in 2023.
“I’ve been doing it for a while. I love it, I enjoy it, and it might be the last studio album. It might be.”
For now, though, Blige is feeling the creative inspiration after releasing her latest single, “Still Believe in Love” (featuring rapper Vado), in October.
“I believe in love for myself, love for life, love for happiness, love for God, love for peace,” Blige told People. “Know that life is full of ups and downs, and roll with the punches because life is important. That’s what’s inspiring my music.”
And right now Blige — who will bring her Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit to New York on Mother’s Day weekend, May 10 to 12 — is feeling the “Real Love” after being inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the performer category along with Cher , Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.
“Beyond grateful!!!!!! This is incredible!!!” Blige — who was previously nominated for the RRHOF in 2021 — wrote on Instagram just after the news was announced on Sunday’s episode of “American Idol.”
“God always has the final say!!!!” added the singer , who will formally be inducted on Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio — the home of the rock hall.
“Thank you to my fans all over the world!!!! Tears of Joy!!!!”
