PDC Darts: All the dates as Pro Tour, European Tour and Premier League return

Watch the World Matchplay on Sky Sports; coverage gets underway on Saturday, July 18

Comment & Analysis @paulprenders

Wednesday 1 July 2020 17:57, UK

Michael van Gerwen

Darts behind closed doors, players marking matches, and the hope of bringing crowds back to watch the biggest names in the PDC - with competitive darts poised to return, we take a look at the state of play.

After an epic six weeks of darting from home with the innovative PDC Home Tour, and a host of online tournaments, a five-day Summer Series will be followed by the World Matchplay - the year's second-biggest tournament - and, as things stand the Premier League, all by the end of July.

Questions still surround the Matchplay, with a decision on where and how the event might look expected by the end of the week.

The PDC are considering two options: a behind-closed-doors tournament at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena - which remains the most likely - but also a scenario that would see the event in its regular home, Blackpool's Winter Gardens.

PDC Calendar - July schedule

In preparation for that event, and following the suspension of all Pro Tour and European Tour action after Premier League Night Six in Liverpool in March, the Summer Series will kick off the sport's return to action for what looks set to be a busy second half of the year.

Summer Series

Nathan Aspinall beats MVG in Cardiff

With the sport halted, so has the Order of Merit - meaning qualification for the premier ranking events has been impossible. To reignite the competitive edge, and give as many of the Tour Card holders as possible the chance to return to play, the PDC announced the Summer Series in June.

Summer Series to signal darts return

Follow us @SkySportsDarts

With the announcement that prize money - which would have lapsed between March 16 and July 8 - has been removed, the field for the Matchplay will be confirmed at the conclusion of the Summer Series.

The five days of competition will take place behind closed doors and will involve losing players calling the next match on their allocated board. The two 'live' streaming boards will have a referee for their match.

Each day will have standard Players Championship prize money of £75,000, and all prize money counts towards the re-calibrated Order of Merit

Additionally, a place at November's Grand Slam of Darts is up for grabs for the player who tops the five-day Order of Merit for prize money accumulated and has not already qualified for the tournament later this year.

Five days of Players Championship events will get underway in Milton Keynes on Wednesday, July 8 through to Sunday, July 12, and the five days will represent the final qualification events for the World Matchplay.

World Matchplay

World Cup partners Rob Cross and Michael Smith contested this year's World Matchplay final

Blackpool's iconic Winter Gardens and the sunshine of summer is synonymous with the sport's second-biggest event, and the news that the tournament will go ahead on the scheduled dates was welcomed.

The draw will take place on July 12, and the quest for the Phil Taylor Trophy will then begin on July 18 and run through to a conclusion on July 26. Sky Sports will be there for every arrow thrown.

However, for the first time in its history, the prestigious event will not be held in Blackpool, but will go behind closed doors at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena.

Matchroom Sport have already seen successful hosting of the Championship League and the Tour Championship in snooker, and with an adjoining hotel, the Marshall Arena is set up to provide the most suitable alternative to the Winter Gardens.

The top-16 players from the Order of Merit will qualify automatically, and they will be joined by the top-16 players from a one-year Pro Tour Order of Merit.

Premier League

UNIBET PREMIER LEAGUE 2020.M&S BANK ARENA,.LIVERPOOL,.PIC;LAWRENCE LUSTIG.GLEN DURRANT V DARYL GURNEY.GLEN DURRANT IN ACTION.

As it stands, Birmingham on Thursday, July 30, will see the resumption of the Premier League, halted in Liverpool after Night Six.

The 17-night roadshow is perhaps the most difficult tournament to get up and running, with nights still scheduled for Northern Ireland, Holland, Germany, Scotland, and England.

With guidance differing from country to country, it remains to be seen whether it is possible to stick to the rescheduled plan that was released in June. That includes a double-header in Rotterdam, Judgement Night now at The O2, a trip to the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, and the Play-Offs scheduled for Sheffield in October.

Premier League Darts 2020 - Revised schedule

European tour.

Gerwyn Price

Behind the cancelled World Series, the burgeoning European Tour has perhaps been the hardest hit, with the calendar now reduced to just four additional events from an initial 13. Gerwyn Price was the Belgian Darts Champion, beating Michael Smith in February.

Four remaining events will now take place in Gibraltar, Germany, Czech Republic, and for the first time in PDC history, Hungary.

The 32-player European Championship remains in place, with the qualifying criteria an Order of Merit based on five events rather than 13. The event is due to take place in Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, from October 29 to November 1.

PDC European Tour

Rest of the year.

Peter Wright poses with the Sid Waddell William Hill World Darts Championship Trophy after victory in the Final of the 2020 William Hill World Darts Championship between Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace on December 31, 2019 in London, England

The caveat remains that all action is subject to change, as guidance to deal with the threat of Covid-19 changes, but the rest of the darting year is yet to be altered.

PDC chief executive Matt Porter told The Darts Show podcast that Players Championship events could be shoehorned into midweeks with players reliant on them for income, and once the Matchplay and Summer Series have played out, further announcements are likely.

The field for the Nordic Darts Masters, the sole remaining event of the World Series, will be made up of eight PDC players and eight local players, while the World Cup will now take place over three days in Graz in November rather than four in Hamburg.

PDC Calender: August-December

An announcement on the field for the World Series Finals is expected in the coming weeks while the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship Finals remain as scheduled and with qualifying criteria likely to mirror that of the Matchplay.

Finally, the World Championship, scheduled for December at Alexandra Palace, remains untouched - the hope being that by then, crowds may be allowed for sporting events and fans will be allowed to gather at the year's biggest Christmas party.

Darts returns to Sky Sports in July, with nine days of coverage from the World Matchplay getting underway on Saturday, July 18, and every day until the final on Sunday, July 26.

About Darts & Darts Tickets

Though often thought of as only a recreational throwing game, confined to pubs, bars, and the backs of office doors, darts is in fact a competitive and highly professionalised sport which is enjoyed across the world. Darts’ relatively simple rules and gameplay have allowed it to become incredibly popular among live and broadcast audiences: major events are attended by thousands of spectators, and millions more watch on television, with die-hard dartists and casual fans alike turning up and tuning-in.

📜 Darts History

The circular dartboards we see today are believed to have come from sections of tree trunk, first used for throwing games hundreds of years ago. Inspired in part by archers’ targets, the concentric circles were gradually added throughout the late medieval period, with different variations applied across the United Kingdom and France as different scoring systems were devised. More rules were added, and regulation “oches” - where players stand when throwing – became more commonplace. The modern dart board and scoring system that is used today is believed to have been devised in the late 19th century, in Lancashire, in northern England.

Whilst darts is still at its heart a leisurely pub game played by countless amateur players (of sometimes questionable ability), it is also a more professional sport than ever. Televised competitions sprung up in the mid-20th century, gradually bringing the sport to national and international audiences. Darts reached its first peak in popularity in the 1980s, when tournaments were broadcasted regularly, particularly in the UK. Coverage then dipped temporarily, but, following a player-led revolt in the early 1990s, the sport reorganised and has become increasingly lucrative since. Most high-profile professional darts is today overseen by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), though other smaller governing bodies include the Modus Icons of Darts tour, and the World Seniors Darts Tour, which oversees events such as the Jenningsbet World Seniors Darts Championship. Professionalisation has not just increased the profile of darts, but polished its image too: tungsten and plastic have taken over from wood and feathers as the darts materials of choice, whilst strict practice schedules and psychological training have superseded pints of ale and mid-match cigarettes. Modern darts players are both professional athletes and celebrities, with high-profile personalities such as Rob Cross, Michael Smith, Gerwyn Price, Michael van Gerwen, and Peter Wright cheered and booed by international fans.

Above all, darts is a sport of skill. Accuracy, consistency, and an ability to handle extraordinary pressure are crucial, as the passionate crowds who attend darts events thrive off the fine margins involved in the game. Darts competitions are famed for their party atmosphere, and this informality means players regularly show their emotions, whether it be frustration at a missed opportunity, or unbridled joy after a big win!

💯 Darts Format & Scoring

The modern dart board consists of 20 numbered “slices”, extending from the outer edge of the board to near the middle, and a central circle, which is itself divided into an inner circle, and an outer ring. The 20 “slices” are also divided, typically into 4 sub-sections: the outermost section (usually coloured red or green) is the “doubles” section and is followed by a large black or white section, which is followed by a small red or green “trebles” section, and finally another large black or white section, closest to the inner circle.

Landing a dart – also called an arrow – in a large black or white section gives the player a score of whatever value “slice” the section is within. For example, hitting either large black or white section within the “slice” labelled with a number 6 would give a score of 6. Hitting the doubles section of the same “slice” would score 12 (double 6), and hitting the trebles section would score 18 (treble 6). The highest possible score with 3 darts is 180, comprised of a trio of treble 20s. A score of 180 is invariably greeted by loud cheers from the crowd at live events; it is an incredibly difficult score to achieve, but professionals sometimes make it look easy.

Within the inner circle – called the “bullseye” – at the middle of the board, the scores are unchanging: hitting the outer ring (the “outer bull”) always scores 25 and hitting the smaller circle (the “bull” or “inner bull”) always scores 50. The term “bullseye” may also be used to refer to just the inner circle, excluding the outer ring.

In professional darts, scores are usually subtracted from a starting total, usually 501. Players compete to “checkout” before their opponent. Checking-out requires reaching a score of 0 exactly, with the final dart thrown landing in a doubles section or the (inner) bull. Checking-out from a high total – the highest possible checkout is 170 – is a key skill among professional competitors, and successful large checkouts are usually greeted rapturously by spectators. If a player’s score dips below 0, that turn’s darts are voided, and they return to their previous positive score, come their next turn. The minimum number of darts needed to check-out is 9, but this is incredibly hard to do, requiring every throw to be perfect. Scoring a “9-darter” is therefore one of the greatest feats in darts.

In most professional darts competitions, the player who checks-out first wins a “leg”, and winning a certain number of legs brings a “set”. The number of sets required for a match win differs between different competitions and across different rounds of the same competition. Some competitions are played in a leg format, meaning players must simply reach a predetermined number of legs first to win a match, without the need for sets.

🎟️ Darts Ticket Prices

Darts tickets can vary in price, from as little as GBP £24 to as much as GBP £70, with relevant factors including the scale of the event, the days for which tickets are valid, and the chosen seating area. A tables ticket located close to the stage is likely to cost more than a ticket for the tiered seating grandstands, whilst opting to attend during the opening rounds is typically a more affordable option than buying a ticket for the final day of action. Moreover, tickets for events with less famous or highly ranked player fields are usually more affordable than ticket prices for major events populated by famous, successful players.

Buy Darts Tickets Without Fees – Koobit

On top of the base prices, darts tickets may also feature a range of service, processing, or delivery fees which factor into the total cost. Koobit compares prices, inclusive of all fees, from a range of official and resale suppliers across the ticket marketplace, so that you can buy tickets at the lowest price with fees included.

Koobit provides a convenient breakdown displaying both the regular cost of a ticket and the fees on op, to ensure you make an informed purchasing decision when you secure your seats.

📅 Upcoming Darts Season & Schedule

The professional darts calendar and the schedule of each season’s major tournaments remain relatively unchanged, year-on-year. Tournament dates for the following season are typically confirmed following the conclusion of each individual event, and tickets generally go on sale approximately 6 months before the next edition of the event is due to start.

Tournaments take place year-round, with each calendar year bookended by the PDC Paddy Power World Darts Championship (formerly known as both the PDC Cazoo World Darts Championship and the PDC William Hill World Darts Championship), the final event of the year, which starts in December and ends in January. Premier League Darts events are typically held between February and May, and many of the season’s major events then take place between July and November. Koobit has a list of 2023 and 2024 tournament dates .

❓ Darts FAQ

How much are darts tickets.

The price of darts tickets can vary depending on the prestige of a given event, the days for which a ticket is valid, and whether the ticket includes any hospitality benefits, however the average price of a darts ticket is relatively affordable, when compared to ticket prices for some other major sporting events. Whilst tickets for tables seats during the latter days of a major event are likely to cost upwards of GBP £70, tiered seating tickets at smaller events can cost as little as GBP £24. Hospitality-inclusive tickets may cost upwards of GBP £500, at the biggest events.

Koobit includes the prices of darts tickets for different viewing areas, alongside filters to help you easily find a ticket to suit your budget.

How do I get cheap darts tickets?

Tickets for events featuring many of the world’s best darts players – those at the top of the PDC’s Order of Merit – are usually more expensive than tickets for smaller or less prestigious events, where the player field may be comprised of less famous players.

If attending a major event, buying tickets for the early rounds of the tournament is typically a more affordable option than purchasing tickets for the final rounds. Opting to sit in the tiered seats sections instead of on the floor-level tables can also help keep costs down.

Prices will also vary between sellers, Koobit compares darts ticket prices from primary and secondary sellers so you can find the right seat for you at the most affordable price possible.

Which darts players are playing?

Hundreds of professional players compete across the calendar year, at a range of different events. Each event has a different player field size and qualifying and seeding regulations vary across different formats. At some events, such as Premier League Darts, only 8 players compete across the whole event, whilst at larger events dozens of players enter the draw: the World Darts Championship, for example, includes a draw of 96. Koobit includes a full season schedule and map, and you can also filter results by dates and locations, to find darts events which suit you.

Where to buy darts tickets at the venue or online?

Tickets for most major darts events sell-out very quickly, sometimes within the first 24 hours of general sales opening. Attempting to buy darts tickets at the venue is therefore not recommended, as there is likely to be limited, if any, availability. Instead, fans should purchase tickets online, allowing them to access sales quickly and easily, compare prices throughout the arena, and compare prices from multiple suppliers. Tickets bought online can be downloaded and then presented digitally at the venue. Koobit helps you to purchase darts tickets online .

How can I find parking for a darts event?

Darts events are typically staged in large towns and cities, meaning attendees will generally have no trouble finding a nearby car parking space, or travelling to the venue via public transport. Some darts venues offer on-site car parking, usually for a fee. Parking details and other travel information can be found on Koobit by clicking the event’s Travel & Parking tab.

How can I find accommodation for a darts event?

Professional darts events invariably take place in or near to major cities, providing attendees with plenty of options when it comes to finding accommodation. Accommodation and tourism information for darts events can be found on Koobit by clicking the event’s Accommodation and Destination tabs, which also include a map of places to stay close to the venue.

2024 Premier League - Night 12 preview

Michael van Gerwen (Kelly Deckers/PDC)

Home hero Michael van Gerwen will take on World Champion Luke Humphries when the 2024 Premier League roadshow rolls into Rotterdam on Thursday. Night 12 of the darting extravaganza will see quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final played over the best of 11 legs at Rotterdam Ahoy, as Van Gerwen prepares to take centre stage in front of a sell-out Dutch crowd. Following a stuttering run of form, the Dutch number one returned to winning ways in Birmingham last week, defeating Luke Littler in the Night 11 showpiece to reignite his Play-Off push. Van Gerwen is now bidding to become the first player to claim five nightly wins in a single season since the current format was introduced, and he’s determined to make history on home soil.

"It's always fantastic to play in your home country," admitted Van Gerwen, who lifted the Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch back in January.

"It also gives added pressure because you want to perform, but I think after last week I've put myself in a good position again.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game. I always knew that Luke [Humphries] was capable of doing what he's doing at the moment, so fair play to him.

"I think he has done really well for himself over the last eight or nine months. He is a grafter and he works hard for what he wants to achieve, and you can only admire that.

"It would be magic if I could win here in Rotterdam. With the new [nightly] format I haven't done too well over here yet, so I hope I change that tomorrow." In the evening’s opener, league leader Littler will face 2023 World Champion Michael Smith, as he bids to extend his cushion at the Premier League summit. Littler moved two points clear of second-placed Humphries after edging out the world number one in a captivating Night 11 semi-final, before his eight-match winning run was halted by Van Gerwen. Smith, meanwhile, closed to within a point of fourth-placed Nathan Aspinall with a quarter-final win over Gerwyn Price in Birmingham, closing out a 6-3 victory with a 104.45 average – his highest of the season. The St Helens star has won three of his four meetings against Littler in this year’s Premier League, although the Warrington wonderkid is in relaxed mood ahead of his Rotterdam debut. "The bigger the arena, the better I play, so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night,"  insisted the 17-year-old, a nightly winner in Belfast and Manchester this season.

"The first five or six weeks were tough, but I think I've really settled into the tournament now.

"Coming into the Premier League, I thought if I made the O2 for Finals Night that would be a massive achievement, so to be top of the league after 11 nights is just a bonus.

"Michael [Smith] won't put too much pressure on himself but he knows he needs to win to keep up with the top four, and I just want to keep going." Elsewhere, Rob Cross will aim to snap his six-match losing streak when he meets 2023 runner-up Price, with both men vying to preserve their Play-Off aspirations. Cross has slipped to sixth in the table having failed to register victory since Night Six, while Price is a point adrift in seventh, despite boasting a 99.79 tournament average – a statistic only bettered by Humphries. However, Cross has won the pair’s last two meetings by an aggregate scoreline of 13-4, which included a 6-1 demolition on Night Five, where he averaged in excess of 109. The evening’s other quarter-final clash will see Aspinall play Peter Wright, with Van Gerwen or Humphries awaiting the winner in the semi-finals. Aspinall celebrated a landmark victory in Rotterdam 12 months ago, and the World Matchplay champion will aim to repeat the feat on his return, having featured in four of the last eight nightly finals. The Stockport star has also won both encounters against Wright in this year’s Premier League, with the Scot marooned at the foot of the table with four points to his name. The 2024 BetMGM Premier League will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK & Ireland, through the PDC's worldwide broadcast partners including DAZN and Viaplay, and on PDCTV for Rest of the World Subscribers. 2024 Premier League Night 12 - Rotterdam Ahoy Thursday April 18 Quarter-Finals Michael Smith v Luke Littler Rob Cross v Gerwyn Price Peter Wright v Nathan Aspinall Michael van Gerwen v Luke Humphries Semi-Finals Smith/Littler v Cross/Price Wright/Aspinall v Van Gerwen/Humphries Final Smith/Littler/Cross/Price v Wright/Aspinall/Van Gerwen/Humphries
