Bangkuai (third left), representing the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, launching the RTSA report together with Dr Mohd Uzir (middle), in Kota Kinabalu.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah expects to receive some 2.5 million tourists by year's end, surpassing its target of 2.2 million arrivals this year.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said as of October, the state had welcomed about 2.1 million visitors and earned some RM4.2bil in tourism receipts.

“I am confident Sabah will be able to meet its (arrival) target and the state will ramp up the recovery momentum next year,” she said during the launch of the Regional Tourism Satellite Account (RTSA) Sabah report for 2022 at a hotel here on Thursday (Dec 21).

“To meet this target, the state government is committed towards implementing various initiatives and inclusive tourism programmes.

“This contributes to efforts to promote and market Sabah as a preferred destination for domestic and international tourists post-pandemic,” she added.

Liew’s speech was delivered by Assistant Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

Also present were Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Mohd Yusrie Abdullah and Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, among others.

Liew added that the reopening of the country’s borders encouraged the steady recovery of Sabah's tourism industry.

Last year, she said, some 1.73 million tourists came to Sabah, a massive hike of 365.5% from the 371,187 arrivals recorded the year before.

“However, the liveliness of the Sabah tourism sector is still below pre-pandemic levels when (for example) some 4.2 million people visited the state in 2019,” she said.

Hence, she added, expanding the air travel network continues to be an important item on the agenda, with many incentives and initiatives planned.

“This is to encourage airline companies to restart routes that were stopped, open new ones and have charter flights to Sabah,” Liew said.

At the moment, she said, Sabah receives 384 domestic flights a week with a capacity of 63,519 seats.

As for international flights, she added, there were 10 direct flights to the state capital weekly, offering a capacity of 18,962 seats.

Towards this end, the Minister said the RTSA was a benchmark to measure how well the Sabah tourism sector performed last year.

“The findings are important to (gauge) the tourism industry’s performance as well as to be used in drafting policies for the sector.

“Ultimately, the publication of the RTSA will help many people including the government, researchers, academicians and industry players to shape and develop the industry in Sabah,” Liew said.

Published with the collaboration of the Statistics Department, the ministry and the Sabah Tourism Board, RTSA Sabah 2022 is a comprehensive report that presents a compilation of tourism statistics.

It is aimed at gauging the performance of the tourism industry and its contribution to Sabah’s gross domestic product (GDP) and integrates products and industries related to tourism.

Sabah Pledges Firm Commitment to Enhance Tourism Relations with Singapore

Thursday, February 29, 2024 Favorite

Sabah , Singapore

Assistant Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, has announced Sabah’s determination to further solidify its presence in the lively tourism market of Singapore. As chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), Joniston highlighted the ongoing efforts to familiarize Singaporean travel agents with Sabah’s wide array of tourism offerings and attractions.

He pointed out the importance of utilizing Singapore’s key role as a major aviation center, which facilitates numerous international connections, to enhance Sabah’s visibility to travelers from Singapore and other countries. Joniston underscored the significance of the direct flight route from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu in maximizing travel ease and efficiency to Sabah.

He also acknowledged Singapore’s status as a bustling hub of commerce, culture, and tourism that attracts millions of visitors annually.

“Sabah, with its distinctive offerings, stands to benefit significantly by tapping into this vibrant market.

“The collaboration between Singaporean travel agents and Sabah’s tourism industry presents mutual opportunities for growth and prosperity.

“Likewise, Singaporean travellers seeking new and authentic experiences will find Sabah a treasure trove of adventure and discovery,” he added.

During a session with Singaporean travel agents at the Meet-The-Experts program, Joniston stressed the need for Sabah to fully exploit this direct connection. He also spoke of Sabah’s commitment to fostering a closer relationship with Singapore, evidenced by the opening of its trade and tourism office in Singapore two years prior, and invited Singaporean business investors to consider the lucrative opportunities in Sabah’s booming tourism industry.

The Meet-The-Experts event, a joint effort by Tourism Malaysia, the Sabah Tourism Board, and the Sabah Trade and Tourism Office Singapore, aimed at connecting 20 Singaporean travel agents, especially those new to promoting Sabah, with 26 local stakeholders, including travel agents, tourism product providers, and hoteliers from Sabah. This business-to-business (B2B) session was designed to spark conversations and networking opportunities that could lead to fruitful partnerships and boost Sabah’s tourism appeal.

Attendees included Tourism Malaysia’s Tourism Officer, Ahmad Faizal; CEO of Sabah Trade and Tourism Office Singapore, Wendy Clare Stephens; and Deputy CEO of the Sabah Tourism Board, Tay Shu Lan. Furthermore, Ahmad Faizal mentioned a unique familiarization trip for Singaporean travel agents, aimed at offering them a direct experience of Sabah’s attractions.

“Specifically, we have planned groups to visit Semporna and Kundasang, recognising these as two sought-after places among Singaporean travellers,” he said.

He stressed that Tourism Malaysia is thrilled to create more exciting and high-quality travel experiences to attract visitors to Sabah and Malaysia ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
