Original Berlin Walks - Sachsenhausen Memorial: english guided tour

In Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp just outside Berlin, tens of thousands perished at the hands of the Nazis in conditions of appalling brutality.  The camp became a training ground for the SS and the site of the headquarters of the whole concentration camp system.  After the Nazis were defeated, the Soviets used Sachsenhausen as a camp for their own political enemies – thousands more were to perish over the next five years.

Tour Overview

After meeting at your hotel this private tour will take you to the Memorial Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, located about 45 minutes north of Berlin.

A total of around 200,000 people (especially political opponents, Soviets, and Jews) were imprisoned, put into forced labour, tortured, or killed at Sachsenhausen. In the late summer of 1941, a mass shooting range was built, which saw the murder of tens of thousands of Soviet prisoners of war.

The evacuation of the camp by the SS began on the morning of April 21, 1945, when the Red Army was only a few kilometres away. The remaining prisoners and other camp inmates were forced to embark upon a cruel “death march” in terrible conditions to flee. Many died or were killed during this ordeal, before surviving prisoners and camp commanders were finally intercepted by Soviet forces in the following weeks.

It is important to us to present the history of Sachsenhausen and the Third Reich camp system in as much detail as possible, while also remaining sensitive to its impact, and respectful of those who tragically suffered and lost their lives.

We base our private tour of this memorial on the most up-to-date specialist literature, as well as numerous eyewitness reports from the time. It is not our aim to shock; however, we do believe it’s important to do justice to the events that took place at Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945.

This tour is essential education for anyone wishing to understand the devastating legacy of Nazi concentration camps before and during the Second World War. However, we understand that visiting the memorial may be too emotionally triggering for some visitors.

Meet your guide on the square next to the Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears), Reichstagufer 17, 10117 Berlin. Please make sure you have your ABC 24-hour transport ticket, as well as some food and drink for the day – there is no opportunity to buy these once we arrive at the memorial.

Description

Over the nine years that the Nazis operated Sachsenhausen concentration camp, they incarcerated over 200,000 people. Some 45,000 of those interned here succumbed to exhaustion, undernourishment, disease, medical experimentation, and systematic extermination.

Established in 1936, Sachsenhausen was the first purpose-built camp to be set up under Heinrich Himmler, the new chief of the German Police. As such, it was conceived as a “model” structure, its grounds and buildings designed by Nazi architects with a view to subjugating prisoners to the absolute power of the SS. Initially intended to hold political prisoners, it later expanded to include individuals targeted due to their ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or disability, effectively becoming a training ground for the atrocities committed during the Holocaust.

Our expert guides will help you navigate this sombre and moving site, leading you on a tour of the memorial that takes in the barracks, the infirmary, the punishment cells, the execution grounds, the crematoria, the pathology laboratory, and the gas chamber.

You will be able to hear stories of individual prisoners, such as that of Yakov Dzhugashvili, son of Joseph Stalin, and of Georg Elser, who attempted to assassinate Hitler in 1939. High-profile prisoners at the camp also included a group of British Royal Marines commandos, who were forced to test German army equipment.

Your guide will explain how, as the war moved into its final phase, an unprecedented campaign of mass killings began, culminating in weakened survivors being forced into “death marches” away from the camp. The Soviet liberators then transformed Sachsenhausen into an internment camp for German prisoners of war and suspected war criminals, with some 60,000 inmates passing through the camp between 1945 and 1950.

It was not until 1961 that the East German authorities established a memorial here, and the tour concludes with a discussion of the way in which this dark past is commemorated by Germany today.

Finishing Point

The tour guide will accompany you back to central Berlin – either to Friedrichstraße train station or the Hauptbahnhof (central train station), depending on which route is most convenient on the day.

Insider Tour Berlin donates €3 per visitor to the Sachsenhausen Memorial authority for the upkeep and promotion of the site.

Our tour with Paul was outstanding. He had a wealth of information and my daughter and I really appreciated both the content and the way it was delivered. He shared information but also gave us space to ponder our own ideas and opinions. The pace of the tour was appropriate and while the subject matter of this tour brought with it sadness and dark ideas, this was the highlight of our visit in Berlin. C. Baummer Mar. '24

A must-see in Berlin!

Jamie was an incredible guide and gave us a very educated and powerful overview of German history, particularly within the WW2 era. He worded things perfectly, was professional and very friendly. I can’t think of a better person to have given us the overview of the camp and the history that led to its construction, as well as how Germany continues to combat anti-semitism today. We learned a ton. Sophia S. April '23

“The Soviet soldiers who first entered Sachsenhausen had spoken of liberation. I didn’t quite realise what that meant. I had never thought about liberation. Sachsenhausen Memorial Private Guided Tour

Guided tour covering the history of the camp and an in depth overview of the concentration camp system.

Sachsenhausen was a concentration camp near Berlin in operation during the years or The Third Reich. Accompanied by your professional tour guide, you will be guided through this site of horror. During your tour the structure and processes of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp as well as the system of concentration camps will be discussed. The Sachsenhausen concentration camp played a special role among the camps of the Holocaust and was built according to a “geometry of total terror”. The concentration camp was built in the form of an isosceles triangle, grouped around the main Tower A. Today it is a German memorial of national and international importance. The private Sachsenhausen tour provides many background facts relating to the Holocaust and the methodical and deadly cruelty used in the Sachsenhausen camp. During your private tour you will be given the opportunity to contemplate this particularly dark chapter of German history, learn individual stories and visit the barracks, the roll call area, the prison and the hospital as well as station Z, the exit which none of the detainees left alive. The private Sachsenhausen tour is available to all individual groups and families. The tour conveys valuable information and provides moments of personal examination of the particularly tragic history of this historical place of horror. Listen to heroic survival stories of prisoners and anecdotes from insidious SS officers. The Sachsenhausen concentration camp was an important command center for the entire system of the concentration camps and is probably the most intense of the Berlin sights regarding the events of Holocaust and history of the Third Reich. In 1936, the year of the Nazi Summer Games, Sachsenhausen became the concentration camp model, and formed the basis for the designs of subsequent camps. It stands as a physical manifestation of Nazi and SS ideology and a record of the crimes of the era. Around 200,000 inmates passed through the "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign at the entrance, and tens of thousands were killed in conditions of extreme brutality. Your visit to the Sachsenhausen camp includes time in the Jewish barracks, the kitchens and laudatic block, the Appelplatz-Rennfeld, the camp prison, the pathology and hospital buildings as well as the train station Z - the training area and killing center. Although less well known than Auschwitz and Dachau, The camp became a training ground for the SS and the site of the headquarters of the whole concentration camp system.. Understanding the conditions of the camp and the experiences of the inmates is fundamental to understanding the realities of the Holocaust and the Nazi regime. Sachsenhausen was also used as a 7/1 Soviet special camp in 1945, and another 60,000 prisoners were housed here in the following five years, with 12,000 threatened with hunger, illness and ill-treatment. Opened as a memorial by the East German authorities in 1961, Sachsenhausen is a prime example of a single location used by multiple regimes for purposes of punishment and propaganda. For this and many other reasons, we believe that a guided tour of the camp monument is a necessity.

How to Get to Sachsenhausen from Berlin: Concentration Camp Day Trip Tips

This post contains links which earn me a small commission at no cost to you.

Ali Garland, Berlin expert & long term resident What to Do

When you visit Germany, an essential part of learning about the country’s history includes its dark past. World War II and the Nazi regime left their mark on Germany, and the world really, and it’s important to honor the victims and learn about what happened so that it never happens again. If you’re visiting Berlin, it’s worth taking a day trip from Berlin to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp .

In this article, I’ll explain how to get from Berlin to Sachsenhausen concentration camp , how to best visit this site, a bit of Sachsenhausen’s history, and more tips for your visit. Visiting Sachsenhausen won’t be one of the more fun day trips from Berlin , but it is a very important one.

What you'll find here

How to get from Berlin to Sachsenhausen

There are a few different ways to get to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp from Berlin.

Berlin to Sachsenhausen with a tour

A tour could be a good way to visit Sachsenhausen since someone else handles the logistics, especially if you’re nervous about navigating public transportation. Plus having an expert guide tell you about the Sachsenhausen Memorial can enrich your experience. Here are two I recommend:

  • Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour from Berlin : This tour is a good way to learn about the tragic history of the concentration camp located north of Berlin. A guide who was trained by Sachsenhausen Memorial will assist you in getting to the concentration camp from Berlin as well as provide valuable information while touring Sachsenhausen.
  • Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial: Bus Tour from Berlin : This tour provides the same type of information about the concentration camp, but instead of using public transportation, you will be transported in a tour bus.

Both tours meet near the Palace of Tears Museum which is near the S&U Friedrichstrasse station.

Friedrichstr S&U station Berlin - how to get to Sachsenhausen from Berlin

Berlin to Sachsenhausen by train

If you prefer not to take a guided tour, you can easily take the train from Berlin to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Getting to Sachsenhausen will require a transport ticket that covers zones ABC since Oranienburg is outside Berlin’s city limits but still within the transport network.

Download the BVG Fahrinfo app or the VBB Bus & Bahn app. You can use the app to buy tickets and to get routes.

To get to Sachsenhausen from Berlin, you’ll need the S1 Sbahn line and then a bus or a bit of a walk. You can get the S1 from several stations in Berlin, including Friedrichstrasse, Brandenburger Tor, Potsdamer Platz, and Gesundbrunnen, among others. It takes about 45 minutes from the Friedrichstr station.

Take the S1 north. The destination or end station on the train will be Oranienburg Bhf, which is also the station where you will get out. The train runs every 20 minutes.

Berlin to concentration camp Sbahn

Once you reach Oranienburg Bhf station, you can take either bus 804 or bus 821. But the buses don’t run too often, so check the schedules and try to time it so you aren’t stuck waiting for too long.

For bus 804, get on the one going in the direction of Malz/Anker. For bus 821, get on the one going in the direction of Tiergarten. With either bus, get out at the Gedenkstätte stop to reach Sachsenhausen.

Otherwise you can walk to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which takes about 20-30 minutes depending on your walking speed. Check Google maps for walking directions here .

Total travel time from Berlin to the concentration camp is about an hour from Friedrichstrasse station if you time it right to get a bus. If you end up walking from the Oranienburg station, it will be a bit longer.

Where is Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Berlin located?

The Berlin Sachsenhausen Memorial is located in the town of Oranienburg north of Berlin. The address for the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum is Straße der Nationen 22, 16515 Oranienburg .

Day Trip From Berlin to Concentration Camp

Keep reading for history and important tips for what to expect on your Sachenhausen visit.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp History

An empty factory was turned into Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp right in the middle of Oranienburg, a town located north of Berlin. From 1936 to 1945, it was one of the biggest concentration camps in Germany. The central administration office for all of the concentration camps in territories controlled by Germany was located here starting in 1938.

how to get to concentration camp Berlin Sachsenhausen - barracks

Though Germany had many concentration camps, Berlin Sachsenhausen was designed as an “ideal” concentration camp and used as a model camp. It was the first one established after Heinrich Himmler, an important Reich Leader, was appointed as Chief of the Germany Police in July 1936, and SS guards were trained here.

Between 1936 and 1945, more than 200,000 people were imprisoned at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. These victims were political opponents of the Nazis, and anyone the Nazis deemed to be “inferior” including Jews, Sinti, Roma, homosexuals, and several others.

In the beginning, the internees mostly came from Germany. But once World War II started, victims were deported from occupied territories and also included Allied prisoners of war. Towards the end of the war, most of the people imprisoned at Sachsenhausen were foreign, and the largest groups were from Poland or the Soviet Union.

Tens of thousands of people died at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp for various reasons. Hunger, disease, mistreatment, medical experiments, forced labor, and outright murder.

When Allied troops reached the River Oder (which forms the present day border between Germany and Poland) the concentration camp was evacuated, and the so called Death Marches led to even more deaths of thousands of internees. Even after the camp was liberated, several hundred victims still did not survive.

Things to do in Sachsenhausen

Whether you decide to take a tour, get an audio guide, or simply experience the Sachsenhausen Memorial on your own, there are quite a few different sections you can see. There is a lot to learn about here, and while it is a somber site, it’s important to remember what happened and honor those who died. If you’re visiting Berlin with teenagers , this could be a good place to take them to educate them about the Holocaust.

how to get to Sachsenhausen from Berlin Germany - memorial photos

At Sachsenhausen, you can learn about why the Nazis established the concentration camp system and the conditions of the camp here. Learn how some people survived, and sadly how many died.

Several buildings at Sachsenhausen are still intact, such as the barracks at the infirmary and the pathology lab where some prisoners underwent awful medical experiments. You can also an escape tunnel dug by POWs.

There’s a lot to take in at the Sachsenhausen Memorial, so tours are normally about 3 hours or so. If you’re visiting on your own, take your time exploring and learning about the tragic history.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour

A sombre and respectful visit to one of the darkest chapters of human history

ABOUT THE Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour

This 5-hour day trip from Berlin to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial is a sombre yet crucial part of any trip to Berlin. Learn about the treatment of hundreds of thousands of Nazi prisoners inside the camp walls, and remember the tens of thousands who never made it out alive. You will also hear about the camp's post-war use under the Soviets from 1945 - 1950.

Your Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour meets in front of the Starbucks at the Brandenburg Gate (S/U-Bahn Brandenburger Tor).

The first purpose-designed Nazi concentration camp

This day trip from Berlin to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial is an important part of any visit to the German capital. Built in 1936 as the Berlin Olympic Games were taking place, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was the first Nazi concentration camp to be designed specifically for this purpose. Not only was it close to the Nazi's capital of Berlin, but it also served as the training grounds for camp guards and camp commandants before they were sent out to the other Nazi concentration camps.

Journey from Berlin out to the Sachsenhausen memorial

The tour begins at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, before your expert local guide (who is accredited to the Sachsenhausen memorial site) will take you on the train out to the camp, giving you an important background of the Nazi's concentration camp system as you go. Once you arrive in the town of Oranienburg, where Sachsenhauen was built, your guide will point out the march the prisoners were taken on through the streets and past the townspeople to get to the camp. Upon arrival at the Sachsenhausen memorial, you will see the model layout of the camp, as your guide explains why it was built that way, before taking you inside the former camp itself.

The lives and deaths of prisoners inside the camp

Once inside the former camp, your guide will tell you about the daily lives of the prisoners - you will see how the prisoners slept in the overcrowded barracks, stand on the square where the hours-long daily roll call would take place, and learn about some of the cruel work details they were forced to carry out. You will hear about punishments and murders in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, and you will also see the cell block building, where prisoners were put into isolation and brutally tortured, before being taken to the foundations of the former Station Z building, purposefully built to kill prisoners and dispose of their bodies quickly. You will also learn about the final days of Sachsenhausen concentration camp, including the death march the prisoners were forced to go on in April 1945, and the prisoners who were simply left behind to die.

While the majority of this tour takes place outdoors, there are a few small museums within the memorial itself. Due to COVID restrictions on how many people can be inside at once, it is possible that queues may prevent you from being able to enter these exhibitions on particularly busy days. However, your expert, licensed guide will ensure that you do not miss out on any information from this important site.

My friends proposed the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Tour and I am really happy that we took it. From all the tours I took in Berlin, this is the most memorable one. Our guide Rob Shaw was brilliant! His approach made this the best tour I had in Berlin because he gave us so many important topics to think about even after the tour was over. He has a very broad understanding of the historical and political context of the events that occurred in Germany and the whole Europe at the time, and great knowledge of the camp itself. I really appreciated him giving us some explanations from psychological aspects of human nature, about how it was even possible that such camps existed. I would highly recommend the tour and especially Rob as a guide.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp with Fran

Fran was our guide as we did a walking tour with her to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp just outside of Berlin. It was an excellent tour. Fran was very knowledgeable and answered our questions in a thoughtful intelligent way. In fact we asked so many questions that the tour went 30 minutes longer then scheduled. Highly recommend the tour especially if you have Fran as your guide.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

Excellent and very eye-opening tour of a German concentration camp. Tour guide was Sam - he was brilliant. Highly recommend

My friends and I decided that we would like to book Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Tour and it turned out to be best decision ever. Reservation was super easy over web page. I have to say that this was best tour that I've taken in a long time. Our guide Rob Shaw was incredible! He made this trip so interesting and fulfilling. He has incredible knowledge on all history parts and you can really learn a lot from him. He was super easy going, full of knowledge, polite and opened for all questions also he encouraged us to ask! This tour I would highly recommend to all and especially with guide Rob Shaw!

Sachsenhausen concentration camp tour

Very informative tour around the concentration camp. Mark the tour guide was very knowledgeable. Lots to see and learn. Public transport from the centre of Berlin just by Brandenburg gate. One ticket needed for the day and no changes on the train.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

I went to Berlin with a couple of friends in September and we had no plans of visiting a concentration camp originally. We heard of the tour through during another local tour of downtown Berlin, and decided on a whim to go. Of our trip through Berlin, Barcelona, and Paris, this was hands down the best part of the entire vacation! It was a fascinating lens into a dark part of history, and our tour guide Rochale was incredibly professional, helpful, and knowledgable about the entirety of German, Holocaust, and WWII history. She drew lessons and conclusions that can be applied to political phenomena that exist today. Her insights were truly breathtaking. I cannot recommend this experience enough. I will never forget it.
