Chromium Content Shell runs the same Chromium rendering engine as Microsoft Edge, but comes without browser-specific features.

The Android emulator comes with the Android SDK which you need to download as part of Android Studio . Then follow the instructions to set up a virtual device and start the emulator . After your emulator is booted, select the Browser icon, and test your site on the old Stock Browser for Android.

Chromium content shell on Android

To install the Chromium Content Shell for Android, keep your emulator running and run the following command:

Firefox on Android

Similar to the Chromium Content Shell, you can get an APK to install Firefox onto the emulator.

To install the file onto an open emulator or connected Android device, run the following command:

The iOS simulator for Mac OS X comes with Xcode, which you install from the App Store .

When you are done, learn how to work with the simulator through Apple Developer documentation .

To avoid having to open Xcode every time you want to use the iOS Simulator, open it, right-click the iOS Simulator icon in your dock, and then select Keep in Dock . Now just click the icon whenever you need it.

Cloud-based emulators and simulators

iOS 18 could bring a Safari browsing assistant, but little is known at this time

Safari Browsing Assistant is rumored to be part of a set of generative AI features thought to be coming to iPhone with the iOS 18 update this fall.

Nicolás Álvarez discovered code on Apple’s servers, indicating that some kind of a browsing assistant is coming to the Safari browser with iOS 18. MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris has confirmed the existence of the code.

Álvarez said the feature appears to use iCloud Private Relay (which requires an iCloud+ subscription) to send data to Apple without compromising user privacy.

iOS 18 rumors ramping up ahead of WWDC24

Little is known at this point how Safari Browsing Assistant might work. It sounds like some kind of an AI-based feature to summarize pages.

We’ll soon know what new features might be coming down the pike when iOS 18 launches this fall. Apple will hold its yearly developer event in a few weeks, kicking it off with a pre-taped keynote broadcast on June 10.

Apple will release the first developer betas of iOS 18 and other updates that afternoon. In July, the betas should be available for testing to the general public.

Apple will continue releasing betas throughout the summer to smooth out the rough edges, eliminate bugs and incorporate feedback from testers. iOS 18 should launch before new iPhones in September.

What to expect from iOS 18?

Other changes in iOS 18 are said to include topographic maps and custom routes , support for the RCS standard in the Messages app for improved chatting between iPhone and Android, the ability to arrange Home Screen icons more freely , hearing aid mode for AirPods Pro and light design tweaks .

The biggest news should be the rumored generative AI improvements across not only Siri but also stock apps and the iWork productivity suite. They could be based on large language models Apple is thought to license from Google  and Baidu .

Memory (RAM)

Most image display and processing capabilities in IDL have been designed to work with minimal amounts of system RAM. Having a lot of RAM can help to avoid occasional memory allocation problems, especially with large datasets. Tests have shown that 8 GB of RAM is adequate for most tasks run using the latest versions of IDL. However, if you anticipate working with very large datasets, or if you are building custom applications with ENVI+IDL code, then you may consider adding more RAM to your system.

Known Issues

Help display on macos.

Using the IDL Help System on macOS with the Safari web browser results in the error "The operation couldn't be completed," or it displays a blank page. By default, Safari prohibits some local file operations; the error occurs when a temporary HTML file auto-created by the Help system attempts to perform a redirect to the specific IDL Help content. There are two workarounds to display the Help:

• In Safari, enable the Disable Local File Restrictions setting.
• If you prefer not to disable local file restrictions in Safari, use Chrome or Firefox as your browser to open IDL Help content.

Remotely Accessing IDL Help on Linux with Firefox

Accessing IDL Help remotely using Firefox on a Linux environment (X Window Server through Windows-MobaXterm/Mac-XQuartz) can cause a core dump crash under these circumstances:

• The default browser of the remote connection destination is NOT Firefox, but Firefox is set in the IDL_HELP_BROWSER environment variable on the local machine.
• The idlhelp command is issued.

Use one of the following workarounds:

• Before issuing the idlhelp command, start Firefox on the local machine.
• Use the L3Harris Documentation Center.

The Apple Watch could be the next great Game Boy emulator

In a cosmic coincidence, just days after I stayed up too late playing Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow , a video of that very game being played on an apparent Apple Watch Ultra came across my screen . I’m now fully convinced that emulators on an Apple Watch would be a great way to game.

Sadly, there are no Apple Watch emulators on the App Store that I’m aware of — yet, at least. R3V3RB_7, the Redditor who posted the video, says it actually shows a $35 Apple Watch knock-off running Android, which has long been the de facto home for smartphone (and, now, smartwatch) emulation.

But you may not need a knock-off watch to do this soon since Apple made the surprising decision last week to allow emulators on the App Store worldwide. The app review guidelines don’t specify the change for any one operating system, so, in theory, developers could submit emulators for the platform.

Maybe this seems impractical, but who doesn’t love tiny gaming hardware ? I’m delighted by the prospect of strapping a tiny screen to a controller and playing my favorite sidescrolling adventures on it. And there are reasons to think this could be better than playing on, say, an iPhone. It’s lightweight, for one thing, and you wouldn’t have to spend money on purpose-built controllers or deal with awkward clip-on phone holders.

Sure, the screen is minuscule. Even if it matches the dimensions of a real Ultra, it’s still two millimeters shy of the 51mm screen of Nintendo’s 2005 miniature handheld, the Game Boy Micro . But Game Boy games just look better on small screens. I might not go out of my way to buy a knock-off Apple Watch to do this, but would I download a Game Boy emulator on my Series 9? Yeah, you bet.

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.

Apple now allows retro game emulators on its app store—but with big caveats, it's probably not the wild west of game emulation you're hoping for. here's why..

When Apple posted its latest update to the App Store's app review and submission policies for developers, it included language that appears to explicitly allow a new kind of app for emulating retro console games.

Apple has long forbidden apps that run code from an external source, but today's announced changes now allow "software that is not embedded in the binary" in certain cases, with "retro game console emulator apps can offer to download games" specifically listed as one of those cases.

Here's the exact wording :

4.7 Mini apps, mini games, streaming games, chatbots, plug-ins, and game emulators Apps may offer certain software that is not embedded in the binary, specifically HTML5 mini apps and mini games, streaming games, chatbots, and plug-ins. Additionally, retro game console emulator apps can offer to download games. You are responsible for all such software offered in your app, including ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws. Software that does not comply with one or more guidelines will lead to the rejection of your app. You must also ensure that the software adheres to the additional rules that follow in 4.7.1 and 4.7.5. These additional rules are important to preserve the experience that App Store customers expect, and to help ensure user safety.

It's a little fuzzy how this will play out, but it may not allow the kind of emulators you see on Android and desktop, which let you play retro games from any outside source.

Retro game emulators run what are colloquially called ROM files, which are more or less images of the game cartridges or discs that played on console hardware. By now, it's well-established that the emulators themselves are completely legal, but the legality of the ROM files downloaded from ROM sites on the Internet depends on the specific files and circumstances.

There are ROMs that are entirely public domain or in some license where the creator allows distribution; there are ROMs that are technically copyrighted intellectual property but where the original owner no longer exists, and the current ownership is unknown or unenforced; and there are some ROMs (like many games made by Nintendo) where the owner still has an interest in controlling distribution and often takes action to try to curb illegal sharing and use of the files.

It's not completely clear from Apple's wording, but our interpretation of Apple's new rules is that it's likely only the last of those examples will be possible; companies that own the intellectual property could launch emulator apps for downloading ROMs of their (and only their) games. So, for example, Sega could offer a Sega app that would allow users to download an ever-expanding library of Sega games, either as part of a subscription, for free, or as in-app purchases. Sega has offered its retro games on the iPhone before in emulation but with a standalone app for each game.

"You are responsible for all such software offered in your app, including ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws," Apple writes. And it specifically says "retro game console emulator apps can offer to download games" in the list of exceptions to the rules against "software that is not embedded inside the binary"—but it doesn't list any other method for retro game console emulator apps.

Whatever the case, this update is not limited to the European Union. Apple has been subjected to regulatory scrutiny in both the EU and the United States regarding its App Store rules. It's likely the company is making this change to preempt criticism in this area, though it did not name its reasons when announcing the change other than to say it has been made to "support updated policies, upcoming features, and to provide clarification."
