The Star Trek universe is vast and varied, with an array of starships that have captured the imagination of fans for generations. Among these are the smaller, often unsung heroes of space exploration – the shuttlecraft and auxiliary vessels. These compact craft play crucial roles in various missions, from short-range travel and reconnaissance to critical support functions. This article spotlights eight of the best shuttlecraft and auxiliary vessels throughout Star Trek’s storied history.

1.Type-6 Shuttlecraft

First seen in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the Type-6 shuttlecraft is a workhorse of the Federation. Designed for short-range missions, it is equipped with phasers and a micro-torpedo launcher for defense. Its sleek design and reliability made it a mainstay on Federation ships like the USS Enterprise-D.

2.Class F Shuttlecraft (Galileo)

The original shuttle seen in “Star Trek: The Original Series,” the Galileo even had its own moment of fame in “The Galileo Seven” episode. Simple but iconic, it laid down a lasting legacy for in-universe shuttle design.

3.Danube Class Runabout

Unlike typical shuttles, runabouts are larger, more versatile vessels as shown in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” With more firepower, stronger shields, and an ability to undertake longer missions, the runabout was essential for operations around Deep Space Nine.

4.Delta Flyer

Created specifically for “Star Trek: Voyager,” the Delta Flyer was designed by the crew themselves to handle the unique challenges of the Delta Quadrant. Equipped with advanced technology like ablative armor, this shuttle combined speed, strength, and aesthetic appeal.

5.Captain’s Yacht (Calypso)

Attached to the underside of the USS Enterprise-E is Calypso – Jean-Luc Picard’s captain’s yacht featured briefly in “Star Trek: Insurrection.” This ship demonstrated luxury alongside performance and highlighted the prestige of command.

Introduced in “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the Argo features a unique design centered around its deployable off-road vehicle – perfect for planetary exploration. It signifies an adaptable approach to shuttlecraft within the fleet.

This small utility craft is used throughout Federation space stations and starbases for repair and construction tasks (“Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and later series). Their modular nature allows them to be fitted with various cargo or tool pods.

8.Type-11 Shuttlecraft

Featured in “Star Trek: Insurrection,” this heavy-duty tactical shuttle possesses stealth capabilities as well as formidable armaments. It’s designed to get personnel into hot zones without being detected.

Inside Star Trek's Galileo Shuttlecraft (Infographic)

Deep-space exploration vehicles such as the starship U.S.S. Enterprise in the iconic science fiction series "Star Trek" carry several auxiliary craft for short trips to other spacecraft or to make planet landings. "Galileo" is perhaps the most famous such vehicle.

The Galileo shuttlecraft is a Class F shuttlecraft carries up to seven passengers and has space-warp engines for interstellar travel. A Constitution-class starship like the U.S.S. Enterprise typically carries four shuttlecraft.

For " Star Trek ," the sets that would represent Galileo were constructed by the Aluminum Model Toys company (AMT). The sets were built for free in exchange for the rights to manufacture plastic model kits of the show's various spaceships. Early designs by "Star Trek" designer Walter "Matt" Jefferies proved too complex to build in time, so AMT redesigned a boxier shape. [ See Photos of the Galileo Restoration ]

Car customizer Gene Winfield led the team that built the Galileo exterior mockup. The 23-foot (7 meters) mockup has a 5.5-foot (1.7 meters) ceiling height and is empty inside with no interior details. The mockup's framework was welded from 2-inch square steel tubing. Carpenters covered the frame with wood and sheet metal.

The mockup's three-panel hatch was operated by stagehands pulling cables. The cylindrical warp engine pods were made from oil well tubes. Aircraft surplus landing gear was added at the rear of the shuttle.

A separately-constructed interior set was more spacious than the exterior mockup and had a higher ceiling so that actors could stand upright without crouching. The interior set includes an "aft compartment" with its own exit to the outside, even though no such compartment could have fit into the exterior mockup.

In special effects sequences Galileo was represented by a small model. A miniature Enterprise hangar bay was also constructed.

After multiple failed restoration attempts and decades of exposure to the elements, Galileo was in bad shape . Wood had rotted, metal had rusted and only bits remained of the original exterior finish. In 2012, the carcass of Galileo was purchased at auction by super-fan Adam Schneider, working with “Star Trek” blogger Alec Peters.

Boat builders Hans Mikaitis and Ken Foster led the team of restorers. They stripped Galileo down to its steel framework, fabricating all-new wood panels and constructing a new mechanism for opening and closing the three-panel entry door.

Details such as the impulse engine and access hatch on the ship's rear had to be built from scratch. The warp engine pods and landing gear are still original parts from 1967. Fans of the show contributed to the project as well, offering information, rare photos and even the replica “busy box” installed on the Galileo’s stern.

The Galileo first appeared in a "Star Trek" episode aired in January 1967. The first official NASA mention of a "space shuttle" dates to 1968, during the original network TV run of "Star Trek." Prior to that, the concept had been called "orbital ferry" or "integral launch and re-entry vehicle."

The first real-life NASA shuttlecraft to be built was to be named Constitution in honor of the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution. The ship was renamed Enterprise in part thanks to 100,000 letters written by “Star Trek” fans. Enterprise was rolled out in a ceremony on September 17, 1976, that included most of the cast members of the original show.

Building the Shuttlecraft Galileo

Midway through Season 1 of The Original Series , the Enterprise got a shuttlecraft and, eventually, a place to put it in.

The shuttle was not designed at the same time as the rest of the ship. The reason for that was simple: shuttlecraft do not get built until a storyline calls for one, because they are just too expensive. So Matt Jefferies was not asked to produce one of these small, short-ranged vessels until “The Galileo Seven” was written.

“The Enterprise was never supposed to sit on a planet’s surface,” Jefferies told Star Trek: The Magazine in an interview that was published in 2000, “so we needed something other than the transporter room. I think, looking at it in later years, it should probably have been a shuttle like a city bus, because several times a script came up that called for more people than we had seats for.”

I worked up sketches for it. But AMT, who were going to build the model in their shops in Phoenix in exchange for being able to market the kit of the Enterprise , felt it was beyond their capabilities, so it was designed by Gene Winfield, an automotive designer who had a custom body shop that primarily serviced the automotive industry through AMT. The Galileo as everybody knows it today was not my design. Overall I was a little disappointed, but I think within their capabilities it was a good solution. And it did work, obviously. People did accept it.

Winfield employed another company, Raymond Loewy Associates, whose Thomas Kellogg made the color rendering of the preliminary redesign. It was based on a separate Jefferies sketch for a “space dock utility craft personnel carrier”, which was boxier and therefore easier to build.

Jefferies’ original design was more aerodynamic.

Basically it was a teardrop thing, and the whole side panel, the outside door, would slide back and you could just step right off on the ground. The seats were like bicycle seats mounted on each side of the keel.

AMT duly produced a miniature of the shuttle. The design did not lend itself to Jefferies’ bicycle seat arrangement, so he had to come up with an interior that worked with the exterior shape.

Jefferies explained the exterior “was a separate set.”

A certain percentage of that had to be done in the studio shops. They brought it all over in a big truck. It was on a steel frame; it was bulky, and it was heavy. I think if it had been lighter and easier to move, and of course if we’d had the time or the equipment, we would have probably got much more use out of it. We could have lowered it to the surface and had the doors open and the people get out or get in. But it would have taken a lot of engineering and probably beefing up the stage structure to be able to lower the thing as it was.

The producers used the Galileo miniature for the photography alongside the interior set, which was designed to accommodate the seven personnel the script called for.

It was never specified how many shuttlecraft the Enterprise carried, but Jefferies assumed there were several and gave the Galileo the “number 7,” tacked onto the main starship registration number. The vessel was “destroyed” during that episode but was later seen in other shows.

Jefferies also noticed that within a single script the description of the shuttle varied:

In one of Gene Coon’s stories [“Metamorphosis”] a description said there were no doors or opening in evidence, and then once we got inside there four or five entrances and people kept coming into the thing. I went to Coon and said, “Mr Coon, what am I going to do?” He said, “That’s your worry.”

Jefferies also designed a control console, but he did not consider this to be a major item. “We just tried to come up with something that looked sensible; some intrumentation they would have to have, compared to what could be done automatically on the Enterprise . Unless you had a story that involved a shuttlecraft entirely then it would have been such a quick, transitory thing that it would have been wasted effort.”

The Enterprise ’s shuttlebay was deemed to have room for several shuttles. According to Jefferies,

We had the large curved clamshell doors at the back, and it didn’t look too much different from a lot of today’s modern hangers on the inside. The shuttlebay itself was only in miniature.

The view of the shuttlebay in “Journey to Babel” was created by shooting through a set of sliding doors toward sections of the interior wall placed 8 or 10 feet further back.

All of our interior walls were of the same finish, which would have included the shuttlebay.

The Galileo was reincarnated as the Galileo II in the Season 3 episode “The Way to Eden,” after the writers had conceded that the original no longer existed. However, the same model was used for photography.

Jefferies came up with a range of other designs for potential shuttles and small vehicles, one of which he labeled a “space tug.”

They were just noodling, daydreaming on my part. But of course the writers were as hard up for ideas as I was and sometimes we could spread a seed if they were looking for something different. There’s one with a man sitting in a bubble and then there was another one with a hook on the back as though it would be for towing. They’d be service vechicles around a space port or a navy yard kind of thing. We would have been able to work from the top of the stage on wires and float them or move them around. They would have been fun to do.

The Goddard was a Federation Type 6 shuttlecraft that was in service with Starfleet in the mid- 24th century , attached to the USS Enterprise -D . It was shuttle number 15, replacing the shuttlecraft Magellan lost in 2368 .

In late 2368 , Lieutenant Worf and Lieutenant Commander Data flew the Goddard to the damaged Romulan science ship aided by the Enterprise , carrying supplies and other equipment. They were unaware that Ensign Ro Laren and Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge were also aboard, phase cloaked after a transporter accident exposed them to chronitons from an interphase cloaking device . Early in 2369 , Captain Jean-Luc Picard "loaned" the Goddard to Captain Montgomery Scott , as thanks for his role in freeing the Enterprise from the interior of a Dyson sphere . Picard felt that since Scott lost his ship, the USS Jenolan , while rescuing the Enterprise , it was only fair the Enterprise return the favor. La Forge told him the craft was slightly slow, but it would be able to take him to the Norpin colony . However, Scott decided to postpone his trip there, and used the Goddard to depart for parts unknown. ( TNG : " Relics ")

The Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 307) stated that the shuttlecraft was " named for American rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945), inventor of the liquid-fueled rocket. "

The Type 6 shuttle Goddard was produced in three separate scales by Playmates Toys during the 1990s:

• Stock number 6101, scaled to fit with the five- inch action figure line.
• Stock number 6176, a smaller scale shuttle for mini-figures of the Innerspace line.
• A mini-shuttle was included with the Innerspace version of the USS Enterprise -D (stock number 6131), which fitted inside a shuttlebay on the Enterprise .

Eaglemoss Collections included the Goddard in the first shuttle collection produced as part of Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection .

The Goddard appeared in the comic book " Light of the Day ", set shortly before "Relics", in which solar flare activity caused it to crash land onto a snowy planet , setting the scene for the rest of the comic.

The novelization of Relics , gave the name of the shuttle as the Christopher , named for Shaun Geoffrey Christopher .

Set after "Relics", the Goddard also appeared in the novel Crossover , where under Scotty's ownership it had been rechristened Romaine , after Mira Romaine . In the novel, Scotty stole the USS Yorktown to rescue Spock from Romulan captivity, and used the Goddard's comparatively powerful computer to control the Yorktown in place of the hundreds of crewmembers it would normally have required.
