Visiting The Old Bushmills Distillery: The Oldest Licensed Distillery on Earth

The Old Bushmills Distillery claims to be the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world, but is it really?

The company that founded the distillery was formed in 1784 but a local landowner was granted a license to distill long before, in 1608.

We’ll dig into the history later! Located a short detour off the  Causeway Coastal Route , the distillery offers a hugely popular tour.

Below, you’ll learn about the story of Bushmills, the new ‘Causeway Distillery’ that opened in 2023 and what to expect from a visit.

Some quick need-to-knows about the Old Bushmills Distillery

Bushmills Distillery

Although Bushmills is one of the more popular whiskey distilleries in Ireland and a visit is pretty straightforward, there are some handy need-to-knows:

1. Location

Located on Distillery Road just outside of Bushmills Town Centre, the distillery is a 10-minute drive from both Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway and a 20-minute drive from the  Carrick-a-rede rope bridge .

2. Opening hours

The distillery is open daily from 9.30am (9.15 in summer) until 4.45pm Monday to Saturday. Sunday hours are noon to 4.45pm. Last tours are at 4pm and the gift shop closes at 4.45pm.

3. Admission

Admission to Bushmills Distillery is £17.29 for adults with concessions for children (£6.92) and seniors (£13.83).

4. The tour

Over 120,000 visitors take the Bushmills Distillery tour every year. Your tour guide will take you through the distillery in small groups on a tour that takes about 40 minutes. Learn about the distilling process, see the barrels and casks in which the amber nectar is aged and visit the bottling hall. More info below.

5. The new distillery

In 2023, a state-of-the-art distillery called the ‘Causeway Distillery’  was opened next to the old distillery. It cost a whopping £37 million and it has doubled the distillery’s production capacity.

The History of the Bushmills Distillery

The History of the Bushmills Distillery tends to cause some confusion and this is due to two dates that are closely associated with the distillery – 1784 and 1608.

1608, which is printed on the bottles, refers to the date that a license was granted to distill whiskey. 1784 was when the company that operates Bushmills Distillery was formed.

Let’s look at the history a little closer at the most famous of the many whiskey distilleries in Ireland .

The royal license granted in 1608

So, the Old Bushmills Distillery itself  doesn’t  date back to 1608.

1608 was when Sir Thomas Phillips, a local landowner, was given a royal license to distil whiskey in Bushmills.

Hugh Anderson and 1784

It was many years later, in 1784, that the ‘Bushmills Old Distillery Company’  was created by Hugh Anderson.

Many argue that this is the true date that the distillery should be tied to and, if that was the case, the ‘t Lootsje’ in Amsterdam, which opened in 1575, would be the world’s oldest.

Turbulent years followed

The Bushmills Distillery closed a number of times in the years that followed. In fact, there are no records of it being open in 1802 or 1822.

In 1860, the distillery was purchased by two Belfast spirit merchants, but it wasn’t until 1880 that they formed a LTD company.

In 1885, the original buildings were scorched by fire and, while the distillery was damaged, it was rebuilt.

SS Bushmills

The end of the 1800s (1890, to be precise) saw the distillery launch a steamship called the  ‘SS Bushmills’ , which brought Irish whiskey to America and beyond.

The ship stopped at Philadelphia and NYC before taking a long journey to Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Prohibition problems

As is the case with Irish whiskey brands to this day, the American market was key to success. Which is why prohibition in 1920 caused the whiskey industry to plummet.

Despite the challenges, Bushmills managed to weather the storm.

Later years

After WWII ended, Bushmills Distillery was bought by a Scottish businessman named Isaac Wolfson. Soon after, in 1972, it was taken over by Irish Distillers.

The years that followed saw the distiller change hands on several occasions:

  • 1988 : Irish Distillers, along with Bushmills, were taken over by Pernod Ricard
  • 2005 : Bushmills was bought by Diageo
  • 2014 : Diageo exchange Bushmills for the Don Julio tequila brand
  • 2024 : Bushmills remains in the ownership of Proximo Spirits

What to expect on the Old Bushmills Distillery Tour

bushmills distillery tour

Photo via Bushmills

There’s plenty to see and do on the Old Bushmills Distillery tour that make it well worth a visit (especially if you’re nearby when it’s raining…).

Below, you’ll discover what to expect from a visit, from the production of the whiskey to some very unique features.

1. Discover the story behind the world’s oldest distillery

For over 400 years, the tiny village of Bushmills has been home to the oldest working distillery in Ireland.

Opened in 1608, Bushmills Distillery has produced fine whiskey in small handcrafted batches, creating the famous smooth taste it is known for.

Bushmills uses 100% malted barley to create malt whiskey. Some are blended Irish whiskeys which combine malt whiskey with lighter grain whiskey.

2. Learn about the production

Bushmills Whiskey is produced in small batches and each cycle requires 40,000 litres of water. The mash takes 6.5 hours and then fermentation lasts for another 58 hours in the washbacks.

The distillery uses 10 pot stills to produce around 4 million litres per annum. Each warehouse contains 15,000 casks of maturing stock.

That’s a lot of liquor! The minimum term of maturity for Bushmills whiskey is 4.5 years with aged whiskeys being matured for 10 years or more.

3. Unique features

What makes the Old Bushmills Distillery so special is that it is the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

Despite its fame and considerable output, it remains a village business built on local grit and determination.

In 2008, the distillery featured on Bank of Ireland bank notes and has been retained on the new polymer version.

Families have worked in this historic distillery for generations, creating hand-crafted Irish whiskey that’s second to none.

4. Learn about the future of the distillery

Under the ownership of Jose Cuervo, Bushmills Distillery is going from strength to strength.

In 2023, a state-of-the-art distillery called the ‘Causeway Distillery’  was opened next to the old distillery.

It cost a whopping £37 million and it has doubled the distillery’s production capacity.

One of the latest innovations is the use of acacia wood casks to give character and spice to the aging whiskey.

What to do nearby

Causeway Coastal Route Drive

One of the beauties of doing the Old Bushmills Distillery tour is that it’s a short spin away from a clatter of other Antrim Coast attractions .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the distillery:

  • The Bushmills Inn : An olde-world coaching inn that dates back as long as the distillery itself and includes inglenook turf fires, cosy snugs and an excellent menu
  • The heavy hitters: Both Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway are less than 10 minutes by car
  • More Antrim attractions: Dunseverick Castle (11 mins), White Park Bay Beach (13 mins) and the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge , (17 mins)

I have a family ancestor who was born in Ballyhome according to the 1881 England Census. Anthony Morley born about 1826 and 2 sons: Michael and Patrick were born in Ballyhome also before they went to settle in Blackburn England. The small town of Ballyhome is part of Coleraine now, I believe. There is an entrance to Ballyhome Road from Cloyfin Rd (B17) where there is a large entrance monument. Was it the original entrance to Bushmills Old Distillery? Do you know of any information regarding this arched gate? Bushmills Irish Whiskey dates from 1608; the company was formed by Hugh Anderson in 1784. Perhaps the date of the building of the stone arch entrance. Do you have information? It was a surprise to find this beautiful gate and I would love to know its history.

The Bushmills distillery tour is a fantastic opportunity to see the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world in action. It’s something not to be missed if you’re in Northern Ireland .

You don’t have to be a massive whiskey head to enjoy the Bushmills Distillery Tour. In fact it will probably appeal more if you’re not, but we’ll get into that in more detail a bit later.

The town of Bushmills itself is a popular base or stop off for people visiting the incredible Giant’s Causeway . Which let’s face it, should be on every Ireland itinerary .

Bushmills Town

But while lots of visitors will stay a night or two in Bushmills, most only spend a couple of hours marvelling at the unique charms of the Giant’s Causeway itself. And since the Bushmills distillery tour lasts roughly an hour, that should make it easily doable to squeeze in a visit to discover how they turn water into gold, even for the tightest of itineraries.

Bushmills Distillery Tour Review

This blog post will give you everything you need to know before you book a Bushmills Distillery tour. Including what the tour involves, where to buy tickets and accommodation recommendations for staying in Bushmills town overnight.

Bushmills Distillery Tour Review

What the Bushmills Whiskey Tour Involves

The Bushmills Distillery Tour takes you through the entire process of whisky making from grain to glass, via a journey through their old distillery.

I say old distillery because also on site there is a brand spanking new 36 million pound facility that was only completed in 2022. But they’re super secretive about that and you’re barely allowed to look at it as you walk past, let alone visit as part of the tour.

Irish whiskey corks

Along the way you’ll learn about the raw ingredients that go into whiskey, the machinery and equipment that turns it into a spirit, the ageing process and the barrels used at the Bushmills distillery, as well as a look at the bottling process.

A Few Things to Know About Bushmills Distillery

There is absolutely no photography allowed throughout the tour. They say it’s due to the alcohol vapours in the air and the danger poised by battery operated devices. However I’ve never not been allowed to take photos on a distillery tour before (see our Jameson Experience Middleton review as evidence).

At the end your £15 ticket can be redeemed for a single drink, either the Bushmills Original, Black Bush, 10 Year Old or 12 Year Old Distillery Reserve.

Bushmills Distillery tour

The distillery has its own bar called 1608 Bar where you can purchase a wide selection of drinks separately including soft drinks, cocktails or a hot toddy. The bar is beautiful and the prices are pretty reasonable.

There are extra tastings available to buy separately at the 1608 Bar for £10 or £25 where you get to sample the Black Bush, 10 year old and 12 year old distillery reserve or the 12 year old distillery reserve, 16 year old and 21 year old respectively.

Bushmills Distillery Tour Price

The Bushmills Distillery tour price currently stands at £15. Included in this is the roughly hour long guided tour through the old distillery and a single drink at the end.

There is only one type of Bushmills Whiskey tour available to purchase at the moment so there are no extra options to select from.

Bushmills Distillery Tour Tickets

The best way to purchase your Bushmills Distillery tour tickets is online direct via the Bushmills website .

It’s a very simple process of choosing your date, time and number of attendees and then entering your card details to complete the payment.

Tour groups ordinarily have a maximum size of 12, and this is the maximum number of tickets you are able to book online per slot.

However, if you have a larger group that you would like to enquire about being accommodated then you can email them directly to ask about this.

This means the available Bushmills Distillery tour times to book online are at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, or 15:00.

Bushmills Distillery Tour From Belfast

If you’re looking to do a Bushmills Distillery Tour from Belfast then there are various options available to you.

If you have your own transport then it’s just over an hour’s journey from Belfast to the town of Bushmills.

But if you’re wanting to taste some whiskies and not fall foul of drink driving laws then your best bet will be to join an organised tour.

We’d recommend this one which also includes a visit to the Giants Causeway, The Dark Hedges and Dunluce Castle. Alternatively theres’s a Hop-on Hop-off Northern Ireland Bus Tour with 1-3 day passes which has a stop off in Bushmills Town.

Is the Bushmills Distillery Tour Worth Doing?

If you have never done a whiskey tour before then the short answer to “is the Bushmills Distillery Tour worth doing?” is absolutely, yes.

However, as I alluded to at the beginning of the post. If you’re slightly more knowledgeable about whiskey production and have been on some whiskey tours before then you might be better off skipping this one.

The reason for this is that the production of whisky essentially involves exactly the same process the world over. The thing that makes visiting different whiskey distilleries worth it are the elements that are unique to each individual distillery.

This could be anything from an interesting history to a singular philosophy. But while a Bushmills Distillery visit is a good introduction to the production of whiskey, it’s very light on what distinguishes Bushmills from every other distillery.

old bushmills distillery

Having said that, Bushmills does produce very high quality whiskey. So while the tour itself might not be the best option for whiskey aficionados, it’s still well worth visiting the Bushmills distillery, skipping the tour and heading straight to the 1608 bar for a tasting.

The £25 option, which includes a dram of Black Bush, the 12 year old distillery reserve, 16 year old and 21 year old, is a great way to sample the best stuff that Bushmills makes.

Where To Stay In Bushmills Town

Unless you have a designated driver, you are likely going to want to stay overnight in Bushmills Town. It’s also a great base for visiting other nearby Northern Ireland tourist attractions. Bushmills a great little town with lots of amenities and quality accommodation.

What to Know Before Visiting Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland

tour of bushmills distillery

Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland holds the title for the oldest active distillery in the world. Granted a distilling license in 1608, the current distillery was built in 1784. So seeing the distillery is experiencing Irish whiskey history. But there’s a few things to know before visiting Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland.

My boyfriend and I spent a week traveling through Ireland visiting whiskey distilleries . But our Irish Whiskey adventure wouldn’t be complete without visiting Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland, so we spent two nights in Belfast just for that.

Bushmills Distillery is unique among Irish distilleries.

First, a little about Bushmills whiskey. It’s one of the few distilleries in Ireland to use 100% unpeated malted barley and one of the few that exclusively triple-distills its whiskey. Even more unique is that every step of the whiskey-making process takes place right at Bushmills — from mashing to distilling, aging, and bottling.

(That said, Bushmills only makes malt whiskey at their distillery. The grain whiskey used in their blended bottlings is sourced.)

And, always worth mentioning: Bushmills’ master blender, Helen Mulholland, was the first woman in Ireland to hold that title . Yay for women in whiskey!

tour of bushmills distillery

Bushmills Distillery is an hour away from Belfast.

It’s often said that Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland is in Belfast. Or at least that’s what I’d heard before my recent distillery trip to Ireland ! But in reality, Bushmills Distillery is in County Atrim, about an hour’s drive from Belfast.

That means that the easiest way to get to Bushmills Distillery is to drive. That obviously comes with its own set of challenges, but the drive itself is really easy. It’s a pretty drive, too, through rolling green hills. And if you have time, you can add some detours along the way.

We stopped at The Dark Hedges , famously the filming location for the King’s Road in Game of Thrones. It was a good excuse to stretch our legs and take some photos. This tour includes transportation from Belfast and stops at several Northern Ireland sites.

(It’s worth noting that it is possible to get to Bushmills Distillery from Dublin. The drive is about 3.5 hours — which is long, but not impossible in a day. In fact, this tour actually includes a driver from Dublin if you don’t want to do it yourself!)

tour of bushmills distillery

The distillery campus is huge!

When we got to Bushmills, I was shocked at the size of the distillery campus. Spanning a whopping 130 acres , there are dozens of buildings, including two distilleries with 10 (!) large stills. There are plans for four more distilleries, which will make Bushmills the world’s largest.

Once all that whiskey is distilled, it needs to be aged. At Bushmills, there are 46 warehouses right on site, each holding 50,000 casks each !

The distillery tour at Bushmills walks you through several buildings, including a distillery, the fermentation tanks, a bottling plant, and more. So wear your walking shoes!

tour of bushmills distillery

No photos are allowed at Bushmills Distillery

A word of warning for camera-loving folks (like me): no photos are allowed inside Bushmills Distillery. Cameras must stay tucked away, and even cell phones must be off! That means if you’re hoping to take notes during the tour (*raises hand*), you better bring a pen and paper.

Our guide explained the no phones and cameras rule is due to the possibility that a spark from the electronics could ignite during the tour. And as you can imagine, a distillery of that size is quite flammable!

It was disappointing not to get photos of the inside of Bushmills Distillery, but I admit it made me pay attention to the tour a little closer! (And photos are allowed outside and in the tasting rooms.)

tour of bushmills distillery

The Premium tour is worth the upgrade.

Bushmills Distillery currently offers two different tours : a one-hour tour and a Premium, 2.5-hour tour. Both include tours of the distillery, the only difference is the tasting that follows.

We took the Premium tour, which includes an upgraded tasting of Bushmills whiskey. I recommend that one because you get to taste such a wider range of spirits. (We tasted 10, 12, 16, and 21 year single malts, plus Blackbush, Bushmills Original, and an Acacia Finish.)

Being able to taste so many Bushmills’ whiskeys side-by-side really gave me a better sense of appreciation for the distillery. Although I still wish their whiskey had a higher ABV!

Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland is quite the experience. From the drive there to seeing inside the historic distillery, the whole day was memorable. I highly recommend a visit if you’re nearby, just remember to book tours in advance !

Old Bushmills Distillery

tour of bushmills distillery

In 2008, Bushmills celebrates 400 years of local distilling history…a unique, unbroken whiskey-making tradition still very much alive today at the Old Bushmills Distillery. Just two miles from the spectacular Giant’s Causeway, the distillery lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty which is rich in history and folklore. At Bushmills, the visitor can observe the craft and skills of making Irish whiskey. The guided tour includes the ingredients and processes, spring water from Saint Columb’s Rill and the finest malted barley, to the art of triple distillation in copper stills and ageing in oak casks. Of course, no visit would be complete without enjoying a complimentary glass of Bushmills whiskey. Today, Bushmills is a well known name for smooth, distinctive Irish whiskey. The whiskey maturing process takes time, between five and thirty years depending on the blend. Often there are around 171,000 barrels on site maturing. Recent accolades include a review by the New York Times in 2006 describing Bushmills 10 year Malt as -the best Irish whiskey Children under 8 are welcome to visit the Distillery but are not permitted to join guided tours. Groups of 15 or more, telephone to arrange your visit. *Due to the high demand of places on the guided tours there may be occasions when all tour places sell out early. Tour places are sold on a first come first serve basis and cannot be purchased in advance.*

Despite a lack of historical evidence, it is believed that troops of King Henry II drank Bushmills some 400 years before the distillery became officially licensed in 1608 by King James I. In 1784 the Bushmills Distillery became an officially registered company. From 1740 to 1910 Irish emigrants to the USA spread the word of Bushmills, as did the product's wins in international spirit and whiskey competitions.

A showcase at the distilleryIn the early 1900s, the USA was a very important market for Bushmills (and other Irish Whiskey producers). Prohibition in 1920 came as a large blow to the Irish Whiskey industry, but Bushmills managed to survive. Wilson Boyd, Bushmill's director at the time, predicted the end of prohibition and had large stores of whiskey ready to export. After the Second World War, the distillery was bought by Isaac Wolfson, and, in 1972, it was taken over by Irish Distillers, meaning that Irish Distillers controlled the production of all Irish whiskey at the time. In June 1988, Irish Distillers was bought by French liquor group Pernod Ricard.

Bushmills Best Irish Whiskey Tour and Dunluce Castle

Bushmills irish whiskey distillery tour and tasting.

On day 11 our driving tour of Ireland we went to Bushmills, Ireland. We toured the distillery and sampled some good Irish whiskey. Or as my husband says, “Enjoyed the best Irish whiskey ”. Touring the Bushmills Distillery was listed high on my husband’s and his friend’s bucket list. They are both connoisseurs of single malt whiskeys and the Bushmills Irish Whiskey is their favorite because it is triple distilled and is smooth and mellow.

Bushmills, Ireland

The city of Bushmills is located about 3 miles from the Giant Causeway . It is a quaint town of about 1.300 people. You can roam the streets and find interesting shops. My favorite stop was at the Copper Kettle , a coffee shop and tearoom, located at 61 Main St., they have a nice variety of A range of cooked foods, sandwiches, desserts, and pastries for sit-in or take away.

Bushmills Distillery

Home to world-famous Bushmills Whiskey. Bushmills is the oldest licensed distillery in the world, founded in 1608.  Generations have passed down the ancient distilling tradition.   They produce 6 types of whiskeys: The Original Bushmills whiskey is made with a recipe that dates back to 1888 it combines single malt whiskey with a lighter grant whiskey. This is my husband’s favorite, “ best Irish whiskey ”. Bushmills Black Bush combines malt whiskey with lighter grain whiskey and is aged in Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon Casks. Bushmills Black Bush is rich with fruity highlights and is a very smooth whiskey. Bushmills Red Bush is aged in new bourbon barrels, it is incredibly smooth due to being triple distilled. Bushmills offers three more single malt Irish whiskeys, those distilled10 years, 16 years, or 21 years. The 10-year single malt Irish whiskey is distilled in sherry casts and bourbon-seasoned casks which gives it honey, vanilla, and milk chocolate aroma. The 16-year single malt whiskey is aged for 15 years in Oloroso Sherry and bourbon seasoned casts and then another 9 months in port wine pipes, which are unique barrels used to make port wine. The 21-year single malt Irish whiskey is aged for at least 19 years in Oloroso Sherry and bourbon seasoned casts and then another 2 years in Madeira casts until mature.

Tour highlights included seeing many types of whiskey casts and learning about the ancient process which has been passed down for generations for making some of the world’s best Irish whiskey. The name Bushmills comes from the Bush River which supplies the water for whiskey and the mill for barley. Tours including a tasting room are available year-round, be sure and visit their website for tour hours, Bushmills Distillery .

Dunluce Castle is just outside Bushmills on the coast. It is the ruins of a medieval castle.

The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side, Making it a very defensible location. it was used by early Christians and Vikings.   Even before that time, this location was the site of an early Irish fort.

A Brief History of Old Bushmills Distillery

The origins of bushmills.

The Bushmills Distillery was founded in 1784 by Hugh Anderson in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. However, the distillery’s history can be traced back to the 13th century when the area was known for producing fine spirits. It is said that the monks of nearby Abbey had perfected the art of distillation and had been making spirits for centuries.

Anderson saw the potential in the area and decided to establish a distillery, which would go on to become one of the most iconic whiskey brands in the world. The distillery’s location was chosen for its proximity to the River Bush, which provided a water source for the whiskey-making process.

Over the decades, Bushmills Distillery has changed ownership several times, with each owner bringing their unique techniques and practices to the distilling process. Today, the distillery is owned by Jose Cuervo, the world’s largest tequila producer. Despite the change in ownership, the distillery has remained true to its roots and continues to produce its signature whiskey using traditional methods.

The Evolution of the Old Bushmills Distillery

tour of bushmills distillery

Over the years, the Old Bushmills Distillery has undergone several transformations to keep up with the changing times and improve the whiskey-making process. In 1838, the distillery upgraded its stills to copper vessels, which allowed for a smoother, more consistent whiskey. This was a significant development in the whiskey industry, as it paved the way for the mass production of Bushmills Irish whiskey.

Additionally, a railway line was built in the area, making it easier to transport raw materials and finished products. The distillery also installed a steam engine to power its machinery, further increasing its production capacity.

The distillery’s commitment to innovation and quality has earned it numerous accolades over the years. In 1887, it was awarded a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria, which allowed it to use the title “Royal” in its name. Today, Bushmills Distillery is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, with visitors coming from all over the world to learn about its history and sample its whiskey.

The Impact of Prohibition and World Wars

tour of bushmills distillery

Like many distilleries, the Old Bushmills Distillery was impacted by Prohibition in the 1920s, as the United States was one of its largest export markets. The distillery was forced to shift its focus to the domestic market, but its iconic whiskey continued to be appreciated worldwide.

The two World Wars also impacted the distillery’s production, as supplies of raw materials were limited and transport routes became unsafe. Despite these challenges, the distillery kept producing its signature whiskey, albeit in smaller quantities.

Today, Bushmills Distillery continues to produce its award-winning whiskey using the same traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. Its commitment to quality and innovation has made it one of the world’s most respected and iconic whiskey brands.

The Distilling Process at Bushmills

tour of bushmills distillery

The Importance of Water and Barley

The distilling process at Bushmills is a meticulous and time-honored craft that begins with the sourcing of the finest raw materials. The water used in the process comes from the nearby St. Columb’s Rill, which provides a unique mineral profile and a distinct taste to the whiskey. The water is carefully tested and filtered to ensure that it is of the highest quality and purity.

The barley used in the process is also of high quality, with a high sugar content, which is essential for the fermentation process. The barley is carefully selected and sourced from local farmers who have been growing and harvesting barley for generations. The barley is then malted and dried, a process that enhances the flavor and aroma of the whiskey.

The malting process involves soaking the barley in water and allowing it to germinate. This process activates enzymes in the barley that convert the starches into sugars. The barley is then dried using hot air, which stops the germination process and preserves the sugar content.

The Mashing and Fermentation Process

tour of bushmills distillery

The next step in the distilling process is mashing, where the malted barley is mixed with hot water to release the sugars. The resulting liquid, known as wort, is then transferred to the fermentation tanks.

The fermentation tanks at Bushmills are made of stainless steel and are carefully monitored to ensure that the temperature and pH levels are optimal for yeast growth. The yeast is added to the wort and left to ferment for around 48 hours. During fermentation, the yeast breaks down the sugars in the wort, producing a liquid known as wash, which has an alcohol content of around 8-10%. This process gives whiskey its distinctive flavor and aroma.

Distillation and Maturation

tour of bushmills distillery

Distillation is the next step in the process, where the fermented wash is distilled in copper pot stills. The stills at Bushmills are unique in that they are smaller than those typically used, resulting in a more refined and fruity whiskey.

The whiskey is then aged in barrels made of American oak, which have previously held bourbon. This maturation process imparts flavor and character to the whiskey; the longer it is aged, the more complex it becomes. The barrels are carefully stored in warehouses that are kept at a constant temperature and humidity to ensure that the whiskey matures properly.

The Art of Blending and Bottling

tour of bushmills distillery

The final step in the process is blending and bottling. At Bushmills, the master blender carefully selects the barrels of whiskey that will be used to create each blend. The blends are then aged for a further period to allow the flavors to meld together and create a harmonious taste profile. The blends are then bottled in iconic, square-shaped bottles, ready for distribution around the world.

The process of distilling whiskey at Bushmills is a true labor of love, with each step carefully crafted to produce a whiskey that is of the highest quality and taste. The attention to detail and commitment to excellence have earned Bushmills a reputation as one of the finest whiskey distilleries in the world.

Distillery Tour

First class tour at Bushmills Distillery. Tour guide was Joe, he was excellent and explained the process. Definitely worth a visit

We had toured a few distilleries in Scotland, they were great, but the tour of the Bushmills distillery in Bushmill, was amazing! Our tour guide Joe was awesome! He gave us so much information in a nice easy was for us non chemists to understand, and was funny and interactive with us all. We had never tried Bushmills before, but enjoyed it so much we bought a bottle to bring home. Bushmills is a lovely town to explore, and the Bushmills distillery was the highlight for us! Thank you Joe, all the best from the Canadians!

The distillery tour was very good. We did not have a reservation, but we were easily able to join the next tour. All of the distillery staff were friendly and accommodating. Joe was our tour guide and he was great - funny, entertaining, and very knowledgeable about the distillery processes. If you have a couple of hours to spare while in the area, I highly recommend this tour!

The tour of Bushmills Distillery was a fantastic experience and was made especially so by Joe the tour guide, who was very knowledgeable, entertaining and friendly

The tour was very informative and good to see the oldest distillery in Ireland. However, two things I wouldn’t do. Don’t go on the last trip of the day. It felt very rushed, although it was a full hour. The shop and bar closed whilst we were still enjoying our sample! Don’t go in September if you don’t have to. It’s maintenance and nothing running, we didn’t even see the stills. Only really understood the process because of visits to other distilleries.

Somehow at the till they managed to charge me twice for one bottle of whisky and they also manGed to add the cost of a jar of marmalade!! When I pointed out the errors they corrected the whisky but not the marmalade so it took 3 attempts before they got it right. There was no apology for this very expensive error. Thank goodness I asked for a receipt so it was easy to show their errors.

Planet Whiskies tour of the new Bushmills Distillery and the visit of the Giant Causeway.

Planet Whiskies Tour and Tasting at Bushmills Distillery

Planet Whiskies had a fantastic time in Northern Ireland in late September 2023 when we visited the new Bushmills Distillery. The trip was a two-day adventure organized by Mark at Button Collective and by Proximo UK , who own the Irish Whiskey Brand Bushmills.

A special mention has to go to Alex Thomas, Bushmills Master Blender, who completed the whole experience of the two days in Northern Ireland.

Her passion for Bushmills products is shown through every talk she makes on the first day of the trip. Whether this was in the distillery tasting room, telling us all about the five whiskies we were tasting or the dinner that she hosted in the evening. Alex always wanted to answer any questions, but obviously, there were questions that she could not answer, as they were 'TOP SECRET'. Over the 16 years we have been running Planet Whiskies website, Alex is near the top of the most impressive whisk(e)y people we have met. The fact you can see her excitement when talking about Bushmills current activities and how for years she wanted any job within the distillery shows her passion for the whiskey industry, and now, with all her excitement about the Bushmills core range and plans, she is dealing with daily, Planet Whiskies can't wait for future ongoing development that will come out for the distillery soon.

Below, Alex Thomas talks about the types of barrels she likes using, talking about the Bushmills 25 and 30 years old and about her time at Bushmills.

"I have a passion for unusual wood and reimagining a traditional single malt. The Old Bushmills Distillery is a very special place where I get to explore this passion for developing new whiskeys and experimenting with different casks and flavours, while still maintaining the iconic Bushmills taste and quality"

"I have worked at Bushmills for almost two decades, and I have had a hand in shaping every one of the expressions we have released during that time. In 2021, I was officially appointed Master Blender for Bushmills and have since had the privilege of unveiling several incredible new whiskeys."

"More recently, I had the opportunity to release the Bushmills 25 and 30 Year Old Single Malts, which proudly stand as the oldest and rarest liquids to come from the distillery. The 25 Year Old is a 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, single malt Irish whiskey that has been matured at the Old Bushmills Distillery for between four and six years before finishing in ruby port pipes for up to 21 years. It is one of the best whiskeys I have tasted in my lifetime – a bold statement, but true! Here, you can savour the wood's influence and appreciate the craft of whiskey making."

"The 30 Year Old is for the sherry cask fans out there – the smooth palate of figs and dates, followed by praline, orange peel and vanilla truly needs to be tasted to be believed! Distilled in 1992, it is the oldest expression in the Bushmills core range to date. Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill-filtered, this sublime whiskey has been matured for 14 years before being finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for 16 years."

Highlights of the two days to Northern Ireland

The tour was well planned from start to finish, highlighting the best in Irish Whiskey, Accommodation and Food with visits to The Bushmills Inn for lunch on the first day, and a trip around the new Bushmills Distillery in the afternoon. Then, a night of whiskey, excellent food and an overnight stay at the fantastic Galgorm Hotel and Spa in Ballymena. The night was hosted by Bushmills Master Blender, Alex Thomas and Proximo, Mark McConville. At dinner, we had an eight-course meal with drinks, and the food was 'out of this world'. The highlight of the evening was tasting the new core range from Bushmills, their 25-year-old and 30-year-old single malts. Both were fantastic drams and finished off the evening in style. We will talk about all the Bushmill drams later in the article.

On the second day, we had lunch at Harry's Shack after visiting Giant's Causeway, having one of Bushmills Causeway drams while on the rocks. And then a trip back to Belfast Airport for the flight back to Glasgow.

Details about the Bushmills Distillery Tour

The Bushmills Distillery Tour was a fantastic opportunity to see the newly constructed facilities. The building of this new distillery, within 100 metres of the Old Bushmills Distillery, started just before COVID and was worked on during COVID, with workers from throughout Europe staying in Bushmills so they did not have to quarantine. Bushmills could not thank these workers enough; if it were not for them, the distillery would not have been built so quickly during one of the most troubling times in recent memories. The cost of building this whisky project was £37 million, and the official opening of the new distillery took place on 20 April 2023, with an impressive light show that could be seen from miles around Bushmills.

With the new distillery in operation, it has come at the best time, with Bushmills sales volumes globally growing 10% in 2022 and passing 1 million cases sales in a calendar year for the first time in its long legacy. Bushmills fill approximately 150,000 American cask equivalent per year between malt and the grain they use for their blends. In the warehouses, there are over 460,000, so Bushmills are is a great position to satisfy the growing demand for their unique single malts worldwide.

Taking the tour around Bushmills was fascinating. Our tour guide host was called Tim, and he walked us through all the details about the distillery and its working. Walking down to the new distillery, passing row after row of empty barrels, waiting for their next fills to be completed. It was impossible to judge how many barrels were there, but knowing these would be filled soon and lying in one of the many warehouses was a wonderful thought. The distilleries use each cask three to four times, and throughout the distillery, there are 480K casks on-site, including barrels filled with their wonderful Bushmills spirit and empty casks.

Tim was an excellent tour guide, telling us as many details as possible about the distillery and answering all our questions. The new distillery has yet to be opened to the public, so we were one of the first people Bushmills did not employ to access the new buildings. With The Old Bushmills Distillery in a normal year welcoming over 130,000 visitors, whatever plans for the new Causeway distillery, this figure is likely to be considerably greater, with plans for a new visitor experience.

Tim then took us into the spirit house and where the mash tuns are located. Everything about the distillery was impressive, and just a couple of facts are the new large mash tum has a capacity of 65,700 litres and is run on a 3.5-hour cycle. This large mash tum has a capacity of 14 tonnes of Malted Barley. This is compared to the older size mash tum that only holds 48,000 litres and requires to run for 5.5 hours, and has a capacity of 10 tonnes of Malted Barley. He also told us that there are between 140-160 full-time staff at Bushmills, depending on the time of year. This shows us how vital Bushmills Distilleries is to the local community and why people wanted to work for them

Photos of the outside barrels at Bushmills Distillery

Bushmill Distillery now has a capacity of 11.5 litres, producing a million cases yearly (2022). The old distillery could only handle around five million litres annually. The best thing about the new distillery's architecture is how it was built. The new distillery has been built so that they could if required, double the still house and fermentation and increase the new distillery to 13 million litres annually.

Currently, there are 38 warehouses on the site at Bushmills, with another 20 planned when required. Each warehouse contains between 19,000 and 24,000 barrels - this variation is due to the many different sizes of barrels that Bushmills works with. And if more is needed, they will find a way to buy more land and add to their storage capacity. Most of the warehouses stock the barrels on pallets in an upright position to maximise the space in each warehouse.

Bushmills are committed to small-batch blending. At The Old Bushmills Distillery, they use just ten copper pot stills to produce limited batches each time. At The Causeway Distillery, we will use an additional 10 copper pot stills of similar dimensions to those in The Old Bushmills Distillery to enable us to achieve the exact same quality and flavour of whiskey in both distilleries.

Photos of the new Bushmills Distillery and warehouses

One of the exciting facts about Bushmills is the foresight they have for the future of the whiskey industry. When the Irish Whiskey industry was in trouble in the 90s, they decided to increase their whiskey production. In fact, they doubled it as they could see this would be short-lived, and it's testimony to this foresight that they have added the Bushmills 25 and 30-year-olds to their core ranges this year. This would not have been possible in the past. Adding these two whiskies to the core range shows the previous management team's vision. You will always get distilleries to release a limited edition 25 and 30-year-olds, but to add this to your core range, which will mostly always be available, is a fantastic fact and one that the old and new owners of Bushmills can be proud of for years to come.

Tasting and Q&A's at Bushmills Distillery with Alex Thomas

The tasting of the core Bushmills whiskies was one highlight for me on the tour. It was in a perfect setting in the distillery, with three tables with four people on each table. Walking in, the host of the afternoon tasting, Alex Thomas, greeted everyone with a warm handshake, thanked us all for coming on the tour and asked how we enjoyed the tour with Tim. Then Alex, on a podium by this time, introduced us again to the distilleries and details about her life within the Bushmills Family. One of Alex's key phrases was, "Remember, Bushmills is all about the wood", referring to the different types of casks used in the production of the distillery drams. Also, stating that each dram that leaves Bushmills goes through a checking process of between 200 and 250 tests before that batch is released. After an introduction, it was time to start the tasting, as we all had six of the finest Bushmills drams in front of us. Alex went through each one, describing her thoughts about each one and giving us all an accurate inside view of each malt we tasted.

Whiskey Tasting at Bushmills Distillery.

  • Bushmills 10-year-old 1983
  • Bushmills 12-year-old, which had two years in sherry casks at the end of the process
  • Bushmills Three Woods 1997, which was a 16-year-old
  • Bushmills 21-year-old from 2001, which had 19 years in sherry/bourbon casks and two years in Madeira cask.
  • Bushmills 10 year old. Eight years in a sherry cask and then a final two years with a Barolo finish.
  • Causeway 21-year-old, which was storied in bourbon/sherry casks and, for the last two years, again using Basalt rock.

The basalt stone is no longer in the casks. They were only used when Bushmills toasted the wood when building the cask. This imparted the minerality into the wood so they can draw it back into the whiskey now as it matures.

After the tasting, Alex held a question and answer session with everyone in the touring party. It was fascinating listening to Alex answer all the questions that were put to her. You could tell she wanted to say more but couldn't, as she could "let the rabbit out the bag." with things currently happening at Bushmills. As I said before, Alex's passion for her whiskey was terrific and the highlight of the whole experience at Bushmills (excluding the new structure of the 'New Bushmills Distillery', which was equally impressive) because of her highly positive feelings about the Bushmills brands, which spread to all of us.

Thanks to Bushmills, Button Collective and Proximo UK

Planet Whiskies would like to thank Bushmills for the invite to see their new distillery and what an experience it was. We want to thank Button Collective and Proximo UK for organising everything on the trip to Northern Ireland, including the taxi pick-up and drop-off from Planet Whiskies to the airport, the bus in Northern Ireland, and every part of the planning that went into the trip, to make it such a success for everyone involved. And staying at the Galgorm Hotel and Spa in Ballymena and its fantastic setting made it even more perfect for everyone on the trip.
