The best ways to get from Heathrow Airport into London

Jordan Waller

Editor's Note

After a long flight, you just want to get from the airport to your hotel in the easiest (and, ideally, the most cost-effective) way possible.

With an airport as vast as London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) — the biggest and busiest flight hub in the United Kingdom — achieving that goal can seem daunting even though it's only 16 miles from central London.

There are several options for getting from Heathrow to the city center, depending on your flexibility, the amount of luggage you're carrying, your budget or your time constraints. You can choose between taxis, the Tube, Uber, dedicated train services and even the bus.

Here are the best options for traveling from Heathrow to London — along with how long they take and other pros and cons — so that you can start your trip off on the right foot.

London Underground (aka the Tube)

travel options from heathrow

Heathrow is on the London Underground's Piccadilly line. To spot it, simply look out for the dark blue line on any Tube map.

The popular service — run by the Transport for London (or the TfL for short) — connects the airport to plenty of central city locations. Often, you won't even need to transfer once you've made it to the city center.

If you're looking for the cheapest option to get you from Heathrow into the city, this is likely it. However, it may not be the most comfortable if you are carrying lots of luggage or traveling during peak commuter hours — especially during summer.

Depart from : Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5; the latter two have Underground stations in Zone 6.

Possible destinations : The Piccadilly line directly serves Hammersmith, Gloucester Road, South Kensington, Hyde Park Corner, Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Holborn and King's Cross St. Pancras, among other stops. The first and last stops on the line are Uxbridge (Zone 6) and Wood Green (Zone 3).

When does it run? Typically, you can expect Tubes to run from all terminals from around 5 a.m. until 11:30 p.m.; nighttime services from stations in Terminals 2, 3 and 5 run on Fridays and Saturdays. You can check the timetable from all stations here .

Transit time : This will obviously vary depending on your final destination. As a guide, it takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Piccadilly Circus from Heathrow's Terminal 5 or an hour to reach King's Cross St. Pancras.

Estimated cost : Single journeys from Heathrow to destinations in Zone 1 (such as Piccadilly and King's Cross) cost 5.60 British pounds ($7.09) if you pay contactless or with an Oyster card. Buying a ticket to central London at a machine will cost around 6.70 pounds (about $8.29) per person. Children under 11 travel free with a fare-paying adult.

If you're going outside of Zone 1 (such as to Hammersmith, in Zone 2), then you're looking at a smaller fare of 2.10 pounds (around $2.60) during peak times and 3.40 pounds (around $4.21) at off-peak times.

Paying for your trip : You can pay as you pass through the gates or by buying a ticket. The most convenient method is to use your contactless payment card by touching it on the yellow card readers found at Tube entrances and some platforms.

Note: The card readers aren't always connected to gates and are sometimes free-standing. Keep an eye out for them. If you don't tap in and out at the start and end of your journey, you'll get charged for traveling through Zones 1 to 9.

You can also tap in using a prepaid Oyster card, which is available to buy at all Tube and Overground stations, plus most Elizabeth Line stations, for 7 pounds (about $8.69); they're also available at some newsstands and visitor centers throughout London.

After purchasing an Oyster card, you can add money to the card using the ticket machines found inside Underground stations. You can then purchase daily or weekly travel cards covering various zones.

Alternatively, you can buy paper tickets from the ticket machines at each Tube, Overground and Docklands Light Railway station. One-way, return, daily and weekly travel cards are available.

Some stations also have staffed kiosks instead of ticket machines; you can ask for advice here on the best tickets to buy or routes to take.

Elizabeth Line

travel options from heathrow

A relatively recent addition to the TfL network, the Elizabeth Line opened in 2022. It is one of the fastest and cheapest options for traveling into central London from Heathrow Airport.

While not as cheap as the Tube, the Elizabeth Line trains are newer, roomier, air-conditioned and equipped with Wi-Fi. It's not quite as fast as the Heathrow Express (more details below), but it is more affordable.

Depart from : Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 railway stations.

Possible destinations : The Elizabeth Line travels direct from Heathrow to Abbey Wood, serving Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf. You can see the full map on TfL's website .

There are no direct services between Canary Wharf and Terminal 5 except for some early morning and late evening services; instead, you must go via Paddington or transfer at Terminal 4. Trains arriving at Heathrow from Canary end at Terminal 4.

When does it run? Times vary by terminal and whether you're traveling during a weekday or weekend. Typically, the first trains leave between 5:15 and 6:05 a.m., and the last trains leave the airport between 11:46 p.m. and 12:13 a.m. Depending on your destination or starting point, you may find trains start slightly earlier or run marginally later. Find specific timing here .

Transit time : It depends on where you're headed. As a guide, Terminal 5 station to Paddington takes around 35 minutes, while traveling from stations in Terminal 2 and 3 to Liverpool Street takes about 45 minutes.

Estimated cost : Heathrow claims journeys to or from the airport that start or end in Zone 1 cost up to 12.80 pounds ($15.83) per person. However, if you use contactless payment or Oyster, TfL's single fare finder shows a single journey from Terminal 5 to Paddington on the Elizabeth Line costs 12.20 pounds ($15.44).

A journey from stations in Terminals 2 and 3 to Liverpool Street costs 13.30 pounds ($16.45). These prices only apply to contactless payments or Oyster payments. Buying a paper ticket via station ticket machines costs a small amount more — as discovered by TPG recently when we paid 14.30 pounds for an off-peak ticket from Liverpool Street to Heathrow via the Elizabeth Line.

Generally speaking, while savings are only minor, it's better to pay by contactless or Oyster card. Children under the age of 11 travel free with a fare-paying adult.

Heathrow Express

travel options from heathrow

The direct train, Heathrow Express, is the fastest option to get from Heathrow to Paddington. The trains are relatively modern and, despite the short distance between its sole stop, they also have luggage racks and plugs for charging phones — handy if you're boarding after a long journey.

For onward journeys, Paddington is well connected to multiple Tube lines. Do note, however, that the Heathrow Express is more expensive than all other rail options.

Depart from : Terminals 2 and 3 station and Terminal 5 railway station; you'll need to take a free connecting shuttle to the station if you land in Terminal 4.

Possible destinations : Paddington station; for an extra cost, you can add connecting Tube travel.

When does it run? It typically operates from around 5 a.m. until midnight. Trains run every 15 minutes. See the full Heathrow Express timetable here .

Transit time : It takes 15 minutes to get to Paddington from Terminals 2 and 3 or 20 minutes from Terminal 5.

Estimated cost : A single Heathrow Express journey from Paddington to Heathrow usually costs 25 pounds ($31.65) per person, but you can sometimes pay less if you book in advance. If you're from Great Britain and have a National Railcard, you could pay as little as 16.50 pounds ($20.89).

Alternatively, you can sometimes find discounts online by searching for Heathrow Express vouchers or coupon codes.

The trains also have Business First Class carriages that start around 32 pounds ($40.51) for a single journey. This may not seem worth it given the short distance and travel time. However, Heathrow Express Business First Class ticket holders are also eligible to use Heathrow Airport's fast-track security service — it may be worth it if you're in a rush.

While the Heathrow Express is more expensive than other options, it can sometimes be a good deal for families; children under 15 travel free with a fare-paying adult.

If you are returning to the airport within one month of your ticket, an anytime ticket is cheaper overall than booking two single journeys, which start at 32 pounds ($40.51).

Frequent travelers can also save by buying carnets — starting at six tickets for 109.80 pounds ($138.99) for standard class or 160 pounds ($202.54) for Business First class.

travel options from heathrow

If public transport isn't your thing or you need to travel between Heathrow and central London when other transport isn't running, you can easily book Uber rides. Naturally, this will cost more than a Tube or train ride.

Depart from : Short-stay parking lot in Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5; the app will tell you where to go once you've requested a ride and your driver is confirmed, depending on the terminal you're in.

You can typically find Uber pickup spots in the following locations:

  • Terminal 2: Level 4, Row H (Short Stay Car Park 2)
  • Terminal 3: Level 3, Row A (Short Stay Car Park 3)
  • Terminal 4: Level 1, Private Hire Pickup
  • Terminal 5: Level 1, Row R (Short Stay Car Park 5)

Possible destinations : You can use Uber to go wherever you like.

When does it run? In theory, you can get an Uber at any hour, but be wary of long waits during peak times.

Transit time : It varies depending on traffic, destination and other factors. (Pay attention to rush hour and commuting times.) As a rough guide, it typically takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Paddington by car or one hour to reach Piccadilly Circus from Terminal 5 (on a good day).

Note that despite its convenience, Uber isn't necessarily the quickest way to reach Heathrow from most locations.

Estimated cost : The cost of an Uber depends on traffic, your destination and other factors. As an example, it can cost 59 British pounds ($74.69) from Terminal 5 to Paddington or 63 British pounds ($79.75) to Piccadilly Circus for UberX rides, excluding tips.

Do note that groups of four or more with more than small suitcases will need to order either a larger car or multiple cars. Expect to pay more for an Uber Lux or Comfort journey.

Taxis (including black cabs, WeKnow and Addison Lee)

travel options from heathrow

Beyond Uber, there are plenty of other taxi services in London. Options include hailing an iconic London black cab, prebooking an electric car from Heathrow's private hire transfer service WeKnow or arranging a pickup from a company such as Addison Lee.

The latter two options provide a meet-and-greet service to help get you and your luggage straight into the car.

If booking with Addison Lee, you'll be required to share your flight number at booking so the driver can adjust your ride in case of a delay.

Again, this mode of transport will be more expensive than using public transport.

Depart from : The relevant taxi rank outside Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 for a black cab; other services will specify the pickup location when you book, or the driver will meet you at the terminal.

Possible destinations : You can use this option to go wherever you'd like.

When does it run? In theory, you should be able to arrange a taxi or car transfer anytime.

Transit time : As with Uber, it varies depending on traffic, destination and other factors. Terminal 5 to Paddington will typically take around 50 minutes while heading to Picadilly Circus will usually take roughly one hour.

Estimated cost : Prices vary depending on the taxi service you opt for and traffic. Some estimates are below.

  • Black cab : The meter starts when your ride begins. TfL — which manages London's black cabs — says trips from Heathrow to central London cost between 52 pounds ($65.83) and 97 pounds ($122.79). More information about black cabs is available here .
  • WeKnow : Prices are fixed, so you'll know what you're paying when you book. Terminal 5 to Paddington or Piccadilly Circus typically costs 70 pounds ($88.61) to 94 pounds (around $118.99), depending on the car booked. A meet-and-greet service costs 9.99 pounds (about $12.65) extra. Book here .
  • Addison Lee : Like WeKnow, prices for Addison Lee rides are fixed. A sample Terminal 5 to Paddington journey (leaving ASAP) was quoted online as 94.32 pounds ($119.40) or up to 122 pounds ($154.44), depending on the car size needed. The meet-and-greet is included in both prices. For an exact quote, visit Addison Lee's website and input your flight number and journey details.

Coach (including National Express and Megabus)

From Heathrow, National Express and Megabus coaches can drop you off at Victoria Coach station. They're usually inexpensive and often have Wi-Fi and power outlets. They can also carry your luggage in the hold. Here's where you can find Megabus luggage allowances and National Express luggage allowances .

While cheap, buses are not the quickest way to reach central London, as times fluctuate considerably depending on traffic, time of day and other factors.

Depart from : Heathrow's Central Bus Station between Terminals 2 and 3 is the quickest departure point for both National Express and Megabus coaches. From Terminal 4, you'll need to take the free shuttle to the bus station. You can also board a coach from Terminal 5 (look for arrivals level stops 13, 14 and 15 for the Megabus).

Possible destinations : You can use these modes of transportation to reach Victoria Coach station, which is a short five-minute walk from the Victoria Line at Victoria station. This line stops at Green Park, Oxford Circus, Warren Street and King's Cross.

When does it run? National Express coaches run throughout the day, with a service gap between 1 and 3:45 a.m. You can check times and prices here . For Megabus times, head here .

Transit time : From Terminals 2 and 3, National Express coaches take between 55 minutes and one hour and 20 minutes to reach Victoria Coach station. Megabus takes between 45 and 55 minutes for the same journey.

From Terminal 5, National Express coaches can take anywhere from one hour and 20 minutes to one hour and 35 minutes.

Estimated cost : National Express coach rides start from 6 pounds ($7.60) per person. For Megabus coaches, a single journey starts from 8 pounds ($10.13).

Other travel options

The 285 bus from Heathrow's Central Bus Station (serving Terminals 2 and 3) will take you to Feltham train station — it's 16 stops away. From there, you can take a 30- or 45-minute train to Waterloo via Clapham Junction.

London bus hopper fares cost 1.75 British pounds ($2.22), and train tickets start from 8.60 pounds ($10.89) per person. The hopper fares allow you to take unlimited journeys from one hour of tapping in.

This is probably the cheapest option from Heathrow to central London, but it is a long-winded option.

There are several local bus routes from the airport for those traveling somewhere in Greater London rather than central London. View them here .

Bottom line

The best route from Heathrow to central London depends on your budget, the amount of luggage you're traveling with and the amount of time and hassle you are willing to put up with.

The Elizabeth Line and Tube are our top picks to avoid street traffic and save money. If speed is your primary concern, then consider the Heathrow Express.

Need to get away from dragging luggage around or just want the absolutely simplest path from point A to point B? Consider an Uber or taxi.

Top 5 airlines serving from Heathrow to Anywhere

No towels or tissue and chocolate and mint provided before arrival

Not good. Expected a lot more as far as excellence.

I staff or crew they were very friendly and humbly, they done theirs service very well, I appreciate them and thank you to the company or Qatar 🇶🇦 Government for providing as good service in their flight ,once again, thank you 😊 🙏 😀 😉 👍

Fantastic, the 787-9 is a very beautifully designed plane and it was a pleasure to fly in the Qsuite. The suite did feel slightly smaller than the 777 variant, and the suite door also felt smaller, as I felt more exposed as passengers and crew walked past. Food was too notch, and the service was fantastic. I wish they’d enforce boarding zones more effectively, but otherwise they did really well.

To many ads. 3 or 4 between each movie. All repetitive, all related to Doha which I was just passing thru.

My seat that I booked over a year ago and some other passenger was sitting in it. They said they could not walk and they would not move. I was with my young kid and the crew did nothing to accommodate that. Just disappointed that the airline accepts that excuse from a passenger.

Crews are very rude and unhelpful. Cramped seats in economy. Foods are useless

Better service is needed. I booked for Qatar but I was switched to American way after I bought my tickets.

Lovely aircraft and I flight entertainment. Good leg room. Full flight crew struggled a bit

In spite of placing requests for vegetarian food, I didn’t get it because they ran out of stock. According to crew, only fixed number of vegetarian orders will be carried. Typically, they should have checked and served those who had specifically requested. I was one of those to get the food last.

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

Very good. Glad we had Premium for the flight out.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

From the start everything was perfectly fine. First meal was fantastic. Breakfast needs a lot of work and food was overcooked and not very nice for breakfast. Staff were fantastic friendly nice they came round and check we need anything else to eat or drink

We originally had a window seat. Our seats were changed to the center isle between 2 bathrooms. This was a red eye flight and we were traveling with an infant. Due to the light from the bathroom doors opening and closing throughout the night our infant would not sleep and cried the whole night which kept us awake and everyone around us. It was a very unpleasant experience for everyone trying to sleep.

Seriously, not displaying departure gate until very last minute is awful. Specially when you have to take an elevator and then transport to go to the sub-terminal. That’s awful in such a busy airport as Heathrow. And I cannot choose seat on this flight because it’s run by British Airways, even entering locator code.

Somehow I got “offloaded” even though I had my boarding pass and was in transit Food is horrible Staff were nice and cheerful No headphones were provided on 11 hours flight

The staff were very helpful with lots of refreshments on offer. The toilets were clean. The seats were comfortable and entertainment was good. No complaints, it was excellent.

The main flight was OK but the second flight was chaotic with delays

amazing! they were so kind and allowed us to sit on empty seats so we could stretch our legs and sleep good. Food is amazing as well plus dessert in the middle of the flight!

All the British airways staff were very helpful and friendly. Every thing was very smooth running from checking in boarding and arriving 40 minutes early. Which is a brilliant start to your holiday.

Overall it was good but not great. The aircraft was an old and seats didn’t recline in business class unless you kept playing around with it.

No nice at all, delayed and I lost the connection over xmas

Food was terrible. Flight attendants OK. Only saw them at food service. Other than that they paid no attention to the passengers at all.

On time flight , great service from crew , comfortable and enjoyable

I was at the airport on time , I checked in my luggage . The plane was delayed and the gate was change. The flight board did not give information . I did not get chance to fly. I am going to make a claim for it

Never flown with LH before so all in all wasba good experience. Also good to know that approx 24hrs prior the flight opens up for being able to organise the seating free.

This flight space was way better than our international flight. Efficient boarding and comfortable

It was a short flight, no real service (which is okay). Very bumpy because of weather.

I'm Canaadian. I hate Air Canada. I used to give them a pass on their international service. No longer, They suck across the board now! Old planes, exhausted staff bad food and shitty entertainment. Your seats need reupholstered! Start with that...

Good experience. Food was great and passengers helped rearrange seats so our family could be seated together

Great flight. Left on time, not very crowded. Quiet and the right temperature.

No eye patches , socks given out for overnight flight! The snack on the short haul was a cube of chocolate! The seat was uncomfortable for a long haul - not enough cushioning!

I paid a lot of money for seat selection and was miserable for flight duration

Lufthansa lost our luggage. After a lot of chasing on our part we got it back. The main problem is that there was no office in Bogota to help us outside of flighttimes. The customer service phone lines had no data on our luggage. I think Lufthansa need to invest in managing communications over lost luggage or this will end with everyone taking more luggage out of hold.

We paid to have overhead carry-on baggage. When we got to the gate we were told that our carry on bags would need to be checked and go below because the flight was full. Notably we were nowhere near the last people to board and about 30 other passengers also had to check their carry-on bags. Other than that the flight was fine.

Very bad plain although I paid A business class ticket I was stuck in a stiff fixed seat without any entertainment or Wi Fi for 5 hours I will never ever book a flight on British airline.

Self check in Kiosk did not recognize that I had prepaid for my luggage. This caused a 40 minute delay even though I had my British Airways email receipt for the prepaid luggage.

Crew were very friendly and helpful. They explained to us in detail the delay in our takeoff due to the storm that rolled in from Belfast and did their best to make up the time. Always great to fly BA!

Staff were very helpful. The free WiFi for messages was also very useful to keep in touch

Crew was more interested on looking at their phones than welcoming passengers during boarding.

The crew was very attentive and kept busy serving a variety of treats!

Terrible. Missed my flight to final destination because of delayed British Airways flight. Had to spend 12 hours in airport and $1500 for new plane tickets

The crew on board were all very pleasant and happy to help. The flight had the old business class seats. The departure board in the business lounge did not update and kept on saying ' gate open' but never said boarding. When I got nervous about the departure time and walked to the gate I was told off rudely for being late.

Offered vegetable curry when it was actually tofu which I don’t care for.

How to Get From Heathrow to Gatwick: The Complete Guide

travel options from heathrow

 TripSavvy / Evan Polenghi

If you're traveling to London, you'll likely pass through either Heathrow or Gatwick airport at some point during your trip. If you need to travel between the two airports (you may be using London as a jumping-off point to explore more of Europe , or you might have scored a long-haul bargain by booking split tickets via different airlines), we've put together a handy guide to make your transfer as easy as possible, including a budget option that'll set you back less than 5 pounds.

Heathrow to Gatwick: The Basics

Located 15 miles west of London, Heathrow (LHR) is one of the world's busiest international airports. All five terminals are connected to central London via the London Underground. Gatwick Airport (LGW) is around 30 miles to the south of London and is the U.K.'s second largest airport. An efficient monorail service links the two terminals (north and south), and the airport is connected to central London by train.

The airports are around 38 miles apart. There is no direct rail service that connects Heathrow and Gatwick. To travel by train, you need to go via central London.

If you're booking connecting flights that arrive at Heathrow and depart from Gatwick (or vice versa), you'll need to remember that they're the U.K.'s biggest and busiest airports. As such, you'll need to factor in sufficient time to allow for potential delays regarding security checks, check-in, customs, and baggage collection, in addition to the transfer journey time itself. Always play it safe when booking flight connections by allowing more time than you think you'll need or consider an overnight stay, especially when booking separate flights via different airlines (neither the airline nor the transfer operator is responsible for a missed connection, and you may be required to secure a new ticket if you miss a flight). Note that if you're booking connecting flights via the same airline, you're covered if you fail to make a connection and will be booked onto the next available flight.

Heathrow to Gatwick by Taxi

Black Taxi Cabs are available in taxi ranks outside all Heathrow terminals and will transport passengers to Gatwick. The journey should take around 45 minutes (depending on traffic). Note you may need to wait in line for a long time at peak times. The fare is likely to be more than 100 pounds one way. Black cabs can carry up to five passengers but don't forget to take luggage into account. When booking through Black Cab London , you can quickly request a wheelchair-accessible cab by checking the "Yes" box under "Wheelchair Access" and providing the dimensions of your wheelchair or mobility aid.

Heathrow to Gatwick by Bus

The only direct route via public transport is by bus. The National Express Coach Service takes around 75 minutes (depending on traffic) and runs up to five times an hour around the clock. Fares start at 20 pounds one way if you book tickets in advance for a specific departure time. Coaches are wheelchair accessible, and comprehensive details on all available accommodations can be found on their website . While not required, National Express Coach Service does recommend contacting them 36 hours in advance to confirm the availability of all accessible travel arrangements. You can pay extra to board any available coach up to 12 hours before or after your original departure time. The luggage allowance is two 20-kilogram suitcases and an item of hand luggage per person. Note that you'll need to factor in a 15-minute walk to the bus station from Heathrow Terminals 1 and 3. Megabus also operates between Gatwick South Terminal and Heathrow Terminal 5. Traveling between the airports takes an hour and 15 minutes, and there is free Wi-Fi, a 20-kilogram luggage allowance, and charging points. Tickets start at 15.75 pounds. While coaches are wheelchair accessible but not accessible for mobility scooter users unless you can climb a few stairs to board the coach and will be okay with having your mobility device stored with luggage below. Megabus requests travelers contact them before purchasing any tickets to confirm the availability of any necessary accommodations first.

Low-cost carrier easyJet operates a  bus service  from Heathrow and Gatwick to central London (not between the airports, though, unfortunately). The cheapest and easiest way to use this service is to take the tube from Heathrow (any terminal) to Earls Court (the journey takes around 35 minutes) and then connect to the easyBus from Earls Court to Gatwick Airport North Terminal (the journey takes about 65 minutes). The trip could set you back as little as 3.50 pounds (based on a 2 pound easyBus advance fare and a 1.50 pound off-peak Oyster fare).

Heathrow to Gatwick by Train

There's no direct train service between the airports, but you can travel via rail and tube through central London.

You can travel by Heathrow Express to Paddington (a 15-minute journey from terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5). From Paddington, you can board the Circle Line to Victoria Station (a 15-minute trip) and connect to Gatwick via the Gatwick Express (a 30-minute journey). The whole journey costs around 40 pounds one way.

Or you can travel by tube from Heathrow (all terminals) to Green Park (a 45-minute journey) and then from Green Park to Victoria (a two-minute trip). From Victoria, you can connect to Gatwick via the Gatwick Express (a 30-minute journey). The whole journey costs around 20 pounds one way. Sometimes the Gatwick Express isn't running (such as on Boxing Day), so you will have to find alternative transportation.

Both routes offer step-free access—something to consider if you have mobility issues, a lot of luggage, or are traveling with children.

Heathrow to Gatwick by Private Car Service

You could consider pre-booking a private car service to avoid waiting in line for a Black Cab at the airport. Most companies also offer a discount if you make a booking in advance. The journey should take around 45 minutes (depending on traffic) and cost about 55 pounds one way.

Heathrow and Gatwick are around 38 miles apart from each other. No direct rail service connects the two, which means that travelers must connect via central London.

A taxi takes around 45 minutes, while the National Express Coach Service takes around 75 minutes, depending on traffic.

A taxi trip from Gatwick to Heathrow is a pricy one, likely to cost more than 100 pounds depending on traffic and time of day.

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is one of the busiest airports in the world, transporting over 80 million passengers in 2019 and over 19 million in 2021. As a major connection hub for flights all over Europe, LHR has implemented efficient processes and transportation for airside flight connections.

Although you can only walk between Terminals 2 and 3, it’s quite easy to get between the other terminals by hopping on several free train services, one of which is the London Underground subway system, so it is convenient for passengers looking to travel to/from London.

Terminals 2 and 5 are the most modern and recently built terminals with satellite terminals to accommodate larger planes and to reduce congestion within the main terminal buildings.

London Heathrow Airport

Other than Terminals 2 and 3, LHR’s terminals are spread apart from one another.

Terminals 4 and 5 are the edge of the airport’s perimeter; whereas, Terminals 2 and 3 are situated between the 2 runways. Since there is only an underground tunnel for road traffic, making connections by the free bus, pre-security, can be a slow process. Thankfully, you can connect between terminals with the good underground train systems as a preferred alternative.

For passengers making a connecting flight , there is also the option of connecting by airside bus, and these routes are detailed in the map above as detailed by the thin grey lines running between terminals.

Hot Tip: The British Airways Digital Wayfinding app debuted as a trial for LHR transit passengers in June 2023.

LHR Ground Transportation Pre-security/Landside

If you are taking an onward flight without an official flight connection, then you may need to travel between terminals outside of the secured area. Depending on which terminals you are traveling between, there are several ways of getting around LHR.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal Transfers

The map above shows free travel routes around the airport with the dark blue and purple lines representing the train routes running between the terminals and the dotted line showing the out-of-hours bus route.

Passengers have the option to travel via a shuttle train, with 2 departures an hour to Terminal 4 and 4 departures an hour to Terminal 5, or by riding the regular London Underground trains that connect the terminals along with onward travel to London. Both options are free with the shuttle train requiring an inter-terminal transfer ticket that is available inside the station, or by tapping in using an Oyster card or contactless credit/debit card. This doesn’t incur a charge; it’s just the method used to track entry and exit points.

The Heathrow Central station serves Terminals 2 and 3 with Terminals 4 and 5 having their own stations. From the Heathrow Central Station, again serving Terminals 2 and 3, it takes 16 to 20 minutes to travel by train to Terminals 4 or 5 accounting for walking time in and around the stations and waiting time.

Hot Tip: London Underground trains are free when using an Oyster card or contactless credit/debit card within the free zones indicated above. If you leave these zones, then you will incur a charge.

Passengers traveling between terminals from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. will need to ride the out-of-hours free bus route H30 which runs every 20 minutes.

  • From Hatton Cross
  • From Terminal 4, bus stop 10 or 11
  • From Terminal 5, bus stop 12
  • From the Heathrow Central Bus Station (Terminals 2 and 3), bus stop 20

Terminals 2 and 3 are situated quite close together, and it is possible to walk between these 2 terminals via a pedestrian underpass. It takes around 10 minutes to walk between the terminals with moving walkways available to use.

From Terminal 2, follow the signs to Terminal 3 by taking the elevator or escalator down to level -1, walking through the pedestrian underpass (bypassing the London Underground station), and following the walkway around.

From Terminal 3 ground check-in level, take the stairs near the Virgin Atlantic check-in desks or the elevator/escalator located opposite zone D down to level -1. From here, you can walk through the pedestrian underpass to Terminal 2 with the route well signposted.

London Heathrow Airport Flight Connections

For multi-leg flights booked with flight connections, you should be able to remain airside to travel to the departure terminal for your onward flight. Once you have disembarked your first flight at LHR, follow the signs for flight connections where a shuttle bus will transfer you to your connecting terminal. Buses depart every 6 to 10 minutes.

Hot Tip: LHR states that there are a few airlines that are unable to transfer luggage for flight connections, so check with your airline whether you will need to collect your bags and re-check-in for your connection.

Layout of LHR Terminals

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2

Terminal 2 (T2) is the smallest terminal, split across multiple levels and zones. Mostly European flights operate from T2 with some long-haul international flights also operating in the terminal.

Level 5: Check-in

The check-in area is located on level 5 accessible directly from the T2 parking lot, or if you’re arriving by bus, taxi, or private drop-off, then you will need to take the escalator/elevator from level 0 to level 5 departures.

If you’re connecting to T2, then you likely wouldn’t need to pass through the check-in area as you would arrive airside on the flight connections bus.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 check in

Level 5: Departures

Once you’ve passed through the main security checkpoint, you’ll emerge into the level 5 departures area where there are shops, restaurants, and the Aer Lingus and Lufthansa lounges. The gates are not accessible from this level.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 departures

Level 4: Departures — A Gates

From level 5 departures, take the stairs, escalator, or elevator to level 4 departures for access to the A gates and onward access to B gates. Level 4 departures has 11 gates numbered A16 to A26, with the furthest gate approximately 500 meters from security or about a 5-minute walk.

More shops and restaurants are located on this level, along with the Plaza Premium Lounge and entry point for T2 connections.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 A gates

Terminal 2B: B Gates

If your flight is departing from one of the B gates, then you will need to follow the signs for these gates, taking a left at gate A16. Take the escalator/elevator to level -2 and walk through the underground tunnel with moving walkways, before heading back up using the escalator/elevator to B gates level 1.

B gates are half a mile (800 meters) from security and take around 20 minutes to walk to from security. Terminal 2B has 16 gates numbered B31 to B36, B38, B39, B41 to B44, and B46 to B49.

Level 1: Arrivals

If arriving on an international flight, then you will need to clear immigration on level 1 and claim your bags if necessary. Once you’ve cleared customs, you will emerge into the arrivals area for passengers and non-passengers.

There are a few shops and cafes on this level, as well as the United Arrivals Lounge and Plaza Premium Lounge.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 Arrivals

Ground Floor: Arrivals — Onward Travel

From level 1 arrivals, take the stairs, escalator, or elevator to level 0 where you can access onward travel options such as buses and taxis, or continue to level -1 for the walkway to London Underground services and Terminal 3.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 Ground Level Arrivals

Terminal 3 (T3) is located next to Terminal 2, and they are the only 2 terminals connected via a walkway. T3 operates mostly long-haul international routes, along with some European flights. The facilities at T3 are spread across a few floors so there can be quite a bit of walking involved to get around.

Ground Floor: Check-in

From curbside drop-off or via public transportation, you will arrive on the ground level and walk straight into the check-in area at T3. Use the boards to find the applicable check-in zone for your airline, and once you’re all checked in you can proceed upstairs to level 1 upper departures.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 Check In

Level 1: Departures

This level has a zone outside of the secure area before clearing security. There are some shops and restaurants in this area, along with the Regus Express Business Lounge and Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Wing for expedited check-in.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 level 1 departures

Level 1: Departure Lounge

Once you have cleared the security checkpoint, you will arrive into the level 1 departures lounge where there is a huge variety of shops, bars, and restaurants.

The Departure lounge is also home to the American Admirals Club , Qantas London Lounge, British Airways Galleries Lounge, Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, and Emirates Lounge.

T3 has 29 gates, split across 3 areas.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 Departure Lounge

Level 1: Gates 1 to 11

Gates numbered 1, 3, 3a, 5, 5a, 7, 9, and 11 are located to the left as you enter the departures lounge and are about a 10-minute walk from security. Apart from a Caffè Nero, there are no other shops or restaurants located in this gate area.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 gates 1 to 11

Level 1: Gates 13 to 22

Gates 13 to 22 are located straight ahead as you enter the departure lounge and getting to your gate can be up to a 20-minute walk. From the departure lounge, take the corridor (with moving walkways) located near the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. When you reach the end, gates 13 and 16 are to the left and gates 17 to 22 are to the right.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 gates 13 to 22

Gates 23 to 32, 34 to 36, 40, and 42 are located to the right. Gates 25 to 29 are up to a 10-minute walk and gates 30 to 42 are up to a 20-minute walk. Only a Caffè Nero and WHSmith are located at the far end of the gate area, so be sure to grab a bite or do any shopping in the departure lounge before heading to your gate.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 gates 23 to 42

Ground Floor: Arrivals

The arrivals area is located on the same level as check-in on the ground floor but is located in the north part of the terminal. Once you come through passport control, you’ll take the stairs or elevator/escalator to the ground level and baggage claim.

There are several shops and restaurants located outside of the secure area, along with access to onward travel.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 Arrivals

Ground Floor — Arrivals (Onward Travel)

From the arrivals area, you can make your way to level -1 to walk through an underground walkway to London Underground train services or exit the terminal on the ground level for buses, taxis, and curbside pick-up.

London Heathrow Airport Ground Transportation

Terminal 4 (T4) is located at the south end of the airport and is not connected to another terminal with any direct walkways. Passengers must travel from T4 to other terminals via the airside connection bus or outside of the secure area by train or bus. T4 serves a combination of long- and short-haul international flights.

Level 2 and Mezzanine: Check-in

T4 check-in is located on the top level (level 2) with curbside pick-up and drop-off located outside of the terminal on the same level. The security checkpoint is located in the middle of the check-in zones.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 Check In

Level 2: Departure Gates

Once you’ve cleared security, you arrive at the departures lounge on the same level. T4 has 29 gates numbered 1A-C, 2, 3, 5, 5A-B, 6A-B, 7 to 9, 10A-B, 11A-B, 12, 14 to 17, and 19 to 25. Gates are 650 feet to a quarter of a mile (200 to 400 meters) from security and take 5 to 10 minutes to walk to.

Gates 7 to 9 are directly ahead after clearing security, gates 1C to 6 are to the left, gates 9 to 21 are to the right, and gates 22 to 25 are to the right and through a long connector tunnel with moving walkways.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 Departure Gates

Ground Floor and Mezzanine: Arrivals

When arriving on a flight into T4, you will pass through immigration on the level 1 mezzanine before continuing to the ground-level arrivals area to collect any luggage and clear customs.

There are a few shops and cafes in the arrivals hall, and you have access to ground transportation outside of the terminal on this level.

Outside of the arrivals hall are the pick-up areas for shuttle services, taxis, and buses. To catch the London Underground or a train to another terminal, then you need to make your way to level -1 where the stations are situated.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 Arrivals

Terminal 5 (T5) is the largest and busiest of the 4 terminals at LHR and is used exclusively by British Airways. Facilities are split across 8 levels, including underground walkways and ground transportation services.

T5 consists of the main terminal building and 2 satellite terminals, 5B and 5C, connected by a walkway or transit train.

Level 3: Check-in and Departures

The check-in area is located on level 3 and is on the same level as curbside pick-up/drop-off and access to the T5 short-stay parking lot. There are almost 100 check-in kiosks available, in addition to staffed check-in desks, and the 2 security checkpoints are located at either end of the terminal.

Once you have cleared security you will arrive at the level 3 departures lounge, where there are several shops and restaurants. The British Airways Concorde Room, Galleries Lounge , and First Class Lounge are also located on this level.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Check In

level 2: Departures — Gates A1 to A23

To reach the departure gates, take the stairs or elevator/escalator to level 2 where you will have access to the A gates and onward access to the B and C gates.

The A gates are numbered A1 to A3, A5 to A9, and A11 to A23 with the lower numbered gates located at the north end of the terminal and the higher numbered gates at the south. A gates are around 0.25 miles (400 meters) from security and are about a 10-minute walk. There are more shops (including duty-free), restaurants, and the Plaza Premium Lounge on this level.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Gates A1 A23

Terminal 5B: Departures — Gates B32 to B48

Terminal 5B is a satellite terminal located between the main terminal building and Terminal 5C. Terminal 5B has gates numbered B32 to B39 and B42 to B48, and a small selection of shops and restaurants.

To reach Terminal 5B, either ride the transit train or walk through the underground passageway with moving walkways; both take around 10 minutes. The train and walkway are situated between gates A14 and A15 in the main building with the walkway on level -4 and the train on level -2.

Once you arrive, gates B32 to B35 and B45 to B48 are located in the north end of the terminal, and gates B36 to B39 and B42 to B44 are located in the south end. There is another British Airways Galleries Lounge in Terminal 5B.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Gates B32 B48

Terminal 5C: Departures — Gates C52 to C66

Terminal 5C is another satellite terminal next to Terminal 5B and the furthest from the main building. To reach Terminal 5C, you can ride the transit train from the main building or use the underground passageway with moving walkways; both are located between gates A14 and A15 in the main terminal building and take around 15 minutes.

Terminal 5C has 12 gates numbered C52 to C57 and C61 to C66 with gates C55 to C57 and C62 to C64 located in the north end of the terminal and gates C52 to C54 and C65 and C66 located in the south end. There are a few shops and cafes within this terminal but significantly fewer than those available in 5B or the main terminal.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Gates C52-C66

When arriving at either of the satellite terminals, the transit train or underground passageways will transport you to where you need to take the escalator/elevator to level 1 for immigration or flight connections. Once you have cleared immigration, you’ll travel back downstairs to the ground-level arrivals area and baggage claim.

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Arrivals

There are a few shops and cafes within the arrivals hall, and outside of the terminal is where you will find onward travel services for buses, taxis, and trains (located at level -2.)

London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Ground Transportation

In some situations, it may be quicker to walk than ride the train, as the travel time to the station and waiting period may be longer.

  • Walking between Terminals 2 and 3: around 10 minutes
  • Walking between Terminal 5 main building and the 5B satellite terminal: around 10 minutes
  • Walking between Terminal 5 main building and the 5C satellite terminal: around 15 minutes

Connecting between any other terminal requires riding a train or bus. Please refer to the ground transportation section mentioned earlier.

Connecting at London Heathrow Airport

Connecting is easy at LHR with purple “Flight Connections” signs guiding you on arrival. If you’re arriving on an international or domestic flight connecting to an international flight, then you won’t need to clear immigration at LHR. If you’re arriving on an international flight connecting to a domestic flight, then you will need to clear immigration on arrival.

If your luggage is checked through to your final destination, then you won’t need to collect your luggage at LHR. Once you’ve checked the flight connection boards to confirm your onward terminal number, ride the flight connections bus directly there and visit the airline desk if you require an onward boarding card.

All passengers must re-clear security at their connecting terminal before being able to relax in the departures lounge to await their flight.

Hot Tip: LHR has a convenient flight connections guide where you can fill in your flight details to see a step-by-step guide to your connection with estimated journey times.

If you have booked 2 separate tickets, then you would need to clear immigration, collect your baggage, clear customs, and use one of the landside ground transportation methods to travel to your onward terminal to check in as normal.

LHR states that there are a few airlines that are unable to transfer luggage on a flight connection, so make sure you confirm with your airline before you travel.

London Heathrow’s terminals are all accessible to passengers with disabilities, mobility concerns, and wheelchair users. All flight connection buses are available to passengers with reduced mobility, and the shuttle train that travels between terminals is at platform level.

The London Underground stations at all Heathrow terminals have elevator access, and special assistance buses can be found in the forecourt outside of each terminal, available for terminal connections.

Electric buggies are available to transport passengers to and from the departure gates and there are phones located in the terminals, parking lots, and stations for assistance.

Phone Numbers for Assistance

  • Short-stay parking lots: +44 (0)20 8757 2700
  • Long-stay parking lots: +44 (0)20 8745 4625
  • Central bus station: +44 (0)20 8757 2700
  • London Underground – All Terminals: +44 (0)20 8757 2700

London Heathrow is a huge airport with large terminals that sometimes do require quite a bit of walking to reach the departure gate. That said, LHR has plenty of moving walkways to make the journey a bit easier. It was even the U.K.’s first airport to have a moving walkway in 1970.

If you’re flying from one of Terminal 5’s satellite terminals, then you can choose to walk or ride the train from the main building; however, it’s a little disappointing that LHR didn’t build a train to its newer Terminal 2 satellite building, which can take up to 20 minutes to walk to a gate!

Without the need to clear immigration, if arriving on an international flight with an onward connection (non-domestic), it’s a pretty slick process with connection buses available airside to take you directly to your next terminal.

  • Heathrow Express offers a quick 15-minute journey from Heathrow Central to London Paddington, departing every 15 minutes.
  • Elizabeth Line provides a longer 28-minute journey with intermediate stops, offering a cost-effective option.
  • London Underground connects Heathrow to central London in about 50 minutes for a budget-friendly fare.

There are many ways to get to and from the United Kingdom's largest air hub, London Heathrow Airport (LHR). Located just along the M25 highway, Heathrow is one of the busiest airports for international flights. Several rail-based solutions are available for passengers wishing to get to the airport without the hassle of a car.

The Elizabeth Line is one of the newest rail lines serving Heathrow Airport . This article focuses on ways LHR can be accessed via rail lines, saving cost and time for passengers.

Heathrow Express

For time-conscious passengers, the fastest way to get from London Heathrow Airport to central London by rail is via the Heathrow Express . These electric trains run non-stop from Heathrow Central railway station, which serves Terminals 2 and 3, to London Paddington Station, the terminus of the Great Western Main Line. They also serve Terminal 5, just three minutes from Heathrow Central.

These journeys from Heathrow Central to London Paddington take just 15 minutes, and, interestingly enough, this is also how often the services depart. In December 2020, Heathrow Express refreshed its fleet, substituting its Class 332 trains for newer Class 387 'Electrostar' units. These four-coach trains can be doubled up to offer eight carriages, providing useful extra capacity at busy times.

However, the speed and directness of the Heathrow Express come at a cost. According to Heathrow's website, Anytime Web Singles for these trains cost £25 ($31.77) each way, with returns coming £37 ($46.33). However, fixed-time tickets can be found for as low as £5.50 ($6.99) each way when booked up to 90 days in advance. Railcard holders are entitled to the standard one-third discount.

Elizabeth Line

For rail passengers who don't mind saving a bit of money by having a longer journey time, the Elizabeth Line's services offer an ideal compromise. These trains typically take around 28 minutes to travel to London Paddington, stopping at several intermediate stops. Passengers can change at Hayes & Harlington for services towards Reading, a key rail hub on the Great Western network.

These services, which only have standard class seats, used to run under the Heathrow Connect brand, when they were operated by Class 360 Desiro Trains. However, Transport For London took over the operation in 2018 and now uses Class 345 units on its Elizabeth Line services. These extend beyond Paddington to Shenfield and Abbey Wood , serving other central London stops.

Passengers using Elizabeth Line services can pay at the ticket gates using Oyster or contactless bank cards, with the former being eligible for railcard discounts. TfL's website states that anytime singles from Heathrow to Paddington cost £12.20 ($15.50). Services run half-hourly from Terminal 5 to Shenfield and every 15 minutes from Terminal 4 to Abbey Wood. Both routes serve Terminals 2 & 3.

London Underground

What would London be without its world-famous Underground network? These trains connect all corners of the British capital and suburban areas of neighboring counties. London Heathrow Airport represents the western extreme of the Piccadilly Line. From here, trains run eastwards from just after five to just before midnight, departing as often as every five minutes.

Using the bustling tourist hotspot of Piccadilly Circus as an example, traveling on the Underground from Heathrow to central London typically takes around 50 minutes. Oyster cards and contactless fares cost just £5.60 ($7.12). Paying in cash is possible, although this does increase the price to £6.70 ($8.51).

Overall, London-bound rail passengers are spoiled for choice at Heathrow. Their decision depends on how they prioritize factors like time and cost.

Heathrow strikes to cause disruption to flights: Full list of dates and airlines affected

Here's what you need to know about when all the strikes are, what disruption is expected and which airlines are affected.

Staff at Heathrow airport are set to strike on the early bank holiday in May, with their union warning planes could be "delayed, disrupted and grounded".

It's part of a slew of strike dates by different departments at the UK's biggest airport over the next few weeks.

Refuelling workers

50 refuellers working at the airport are set to strike on the following days:

Saturday 4 May

Sunday 5 May

Monday 6 May (bank holiday)

The Unite union says it expects the strikes by its members to lead to severe disruption for passengers over the bank holiday.

Unite says the workers' employer, aviation fuel firm AFS, imposed cuts to the terms and conditions of new staff recruited since January 2024, including offering them reduced pension and sickness benefits.

Heathrow Airport says it is working on contingencies with AFS to manage any potential disruption, saying it has "robust" measures planned, adding that passengers can book flights from Heathrow with confidence.

Sky News has attempted to contact AFS for comment.

Full list of airlines set to be affected:

American Airlines

United Airlines

Virgin Atlantic

Japan Airlines

Singapore Airlines

Korean Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines

Lot (Polish)

Royal Air Maroc

Middle East Airlines

Sas (Scandinavian)

Tap Air Portugal

Malta Airlines

Aero Mexico

Latam Airlines

Bulgarian Air

China Airlines

Air Mauritius

Turkmenistan

Tianjin Airlines

Beijing Capital

Almost 800 staff in various departments

Unite members in the following departments at Heathrow are set to take part in a week of strike action in May:

Passenger services - who assist travellers to catch connecting flights

Trolley operations

Campus security - the security guards who are responsible for all workers at Heathrow and vehicles being checked before entering Heathrow

Firefighters

Airside operations

The walkout will take place on the following days:

Tuesday 7 May

Wednesday 8 May

Thursday 9 May

Friday 10 May

Saturday 11 May

Sunday 12 May

Monday 13 May

Unite says the strike action "will inevitably cause widespread disruption across the airport, leading to delays and disruption".

It says the airport has announced the work of passenger services, trolley operations and campus security is set to be outsourced by 1 June in a "cost-cutting exercise" that Heathrow says will save it £40m.

"This cost reduction will lead to a substantial reduction in the number of workers, which raises serious security concerns, given the safety critical nature of much of the work undertaken," Unite says.

Its firefighters and airside operation members are also striking because they fear they "may be next in line" to have their work outsourced, the union adds.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Heathrow Airport's actions are deplorable, it is raking in massive profits for the bosses while trying to squeeze every last penny out of its workforce.

"Unite is fully focused on defending its members jobs, pay and conditions and our members at Heathrow will receive the union's unrelenting support during this dispute."

A Heathrow spokesman said: "We are reorganising our operations to deliver better results for our customers. There are no job losses as a result of these changes, and we continue to discuss with Unite the implementation of these changes for the small number of colleagues impacted.

"Unite's threats of potential industrial action are unnecessary, and customers can be reassured that we will keep the airport operating smoothly, just like we have in the past."

Border Force officers

They will walk out for four days over changes to their working conditions, according to the Public and Commercial Services trade union.

The union said more than 300 of its members working at terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the airport will walk out on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Thursday 2 May

The effect of this strike would be on arrivals rather than departures.

It's because around 250 Border Force staff will lose their jobs at passport control under new roster plans, the union says.

PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: "Our members are angry and disappointed at being forced out of their jobs.

"While not everyone will be affected, the changes will disproportionately hit those who are disabled or have caring responsibilities.

"The Home Office should be doing all it can to retain experienced, trained staff - not lose them by introducing an unworkable new roster system."

The Home Office said it was "disappointed" with the union's decision but added it remains "open to discussing a resolution".

It added: "The changes we are implementing will bring the working arrangements for Border Force Heathrow staff in line with the way staff work at other ports, provide them with more certainty on working patterns, and improve the service to the travelling public.

"Keeping our borders secure remains our top priority and we have robust plans in place to minimise any potential disruption."

From the city's amazing architecture to its bustling museums , there are plenty of activities to catch any kid's attention. Here's why I'll always believe London is a terrific destination for children of any age.

Transportation in London is usually a breeze

In my experience, arriving in and getting around London is pretty easy. The Heathrow Express, an airport rail link operating from London Heathrow Airport, can transport passengers to Paddington Station in 15 minutes or less.

Once in the city, we take the Tube, a rapid underground transit system, to get to the big sights. Children under 11 travel for free when accompanied by an adult, and discounts are available for older kids.

When my son was 11, he loved the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus, a touristy but fun experience that takes passengers to major city sights like Big Ben and the Tower of London. Passengers can get off the open-top double-decker vehicle anytime, take a tour, grab a bite to eat, and then continue their journey when the next bus comes.

I recommend getting a 48-hour pass because you can get a great city overview on the first day and then dig deeper into certain spots on the second.

Finally, in an emergency like an infant meltdown or a toddler tantrum, Ubers are almost always accessible.

The city is full of parks for children to play in

London has incredible green space for such a large city. Many of the city's parks are free to the public and are wonderful spots for kids to picnic, sightsee, and burn off energy.

Regent's Park has gorgeous gardens, a playground, and a lake. At Hyde Park, families with two adults and up to four children can swim in the Serpentine Lido for only £15, or about $19.

Related stories

Greenwich Park is another one of our favorites because it offers beautiful views of the River Thames and an expansive lawn surrounding the Royal Observatory and Prime Meridian.

There's no need to worry about a language barrier

I'm a seasoned traveler, but language barriers can still throw me for a loop. I always try to learn a few simple phrases, but not understanding a language and juggling a kid can cause a lot of stress.

In London, there's no need to worry about a language barrier. Though over 300 languages are spoken in the city, most people know English.

There might be different words for various objects — like "nappy" or "diaper" — but I've easily communicated with the people around us in London.

London is full of kid-friendly eateries

Each time we've traveled to London, I've seen terrific restaurant options for palates of all ages. For example, Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen offers a deal so children 8 and under dine for free when ordering off the kids' menu.

Delicious international foods , such as Italian, Indian, Thai, and Ethiopian cuisine, are also available all over London. Fast-food chains like Simit Sarayi and Yo! Sushi are also located throughout the city.

We loved taking our son to sample sweets at Harrods' Food Halls and enjoy sandwiches and scones at St. Martin-in-the-Fields' Café in the Crypt in Trafalgar Square.

There are tons of entertaining museums that offer free admission

London offers nearly 200 museums for patrons to soak up the city's culture and history. They're the perfect places to seek shelter from rain or serve as quiet, interesting respites for a napping baby.

On our first family trip, we strolled our then 8-month-old son through several wings of The British Museum as he peacefully slept. When he was 11, we hit The British Library to marvel at the Magna Carta and checked out the artwork at the National Portrait Gallery.

On our most recent excursion, we watched as our 16-year-old perused the masterpieces at Tate Modern. Most of these museums offer free admission, great kids' activities, hands-on exhibitions, and terrific gift shops.

London is close to tons of easy day-trip options

If you're a traveler who needs a change of pace or scenery every few days, London is a gateway to several day-trip destinations. Places like Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Birmingham, and Brighton are only a bus ride away.

Visiting cities like Paris , Brussels, and even Amsterdam in a single day is doable thanks to the Eurostar train, which runs through several Western European countries.

The bottom line: London's fun, full of great transportation options, and offers endless activities to entertain the entire family. It's truly a winner for kids of all ages.

London Heathrow is officially one of Europe’s most stressful airports

A new study reckons the capital’s biggest airport is the continent’s third-most stressful

Angira Sen

Airports don’t exactly have a rep for being calming, tranquil sorts of places. From cancelled flights and lost baggage to lengthy queues and sky-high prices, airports are often very stressful indeed.

Some airports, however, are much more stressful than others – and according to a new ranking, one London air hub is mega-stressful even by airport standards.  Heathrow is apparently the third-most stressful airport in all of Europe.

That’s according to research by StressFreeCarRental.com , which listed European aviation hubs based  on five factors that contribute to stress: passenger numbers, distance from the city centre, number of flight destinations, car parking charges and departure delays.

London Heathrow came third, partly due to its total number of passengers ( 79,151,723) and distance from central London (28.57 kilometres). Heathrow also had the highest car parking charges on the list, apparently charging a whopping €143 (£123) per week.

Top of the stress index was Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport, while second was Amsterdam’s Schiphol. Here’s the full list of Europe’s 10 most stressful airports, according to StressFreeCarRental.com.

How Heathrow airport strikes could threaten your bank holiday travel plans

Heathrow Airport terminal

Strikes will take charge of Heathrow Airport next month, threatening travel during the Early May Bank Holiday .

Planes could be grounded and flights delayed or cancelled at the busiest airport in London .

Two separate rounds of industrial action are planned from the beginning of May.

In 2023, Heathrow handled almost 80 million (79,180,434) passengers, also making it  one of the busiest  in the world.

This is everything you need to know if you are planning to travel from Heathrow during this period.

What strikes are planned at Heathrow Airport?

The  Heathrow Border Force workers are striking  between April 29 and May 2, and that involves the UK Border Force offices working on passport control across all four Heathrow terminals.

Refuelers working for Aviation Fuel Services (AFS) are to take industrial action for 72 hours beginning on Saturday, May 4.

Previously, a strike had been scheduled between April 11 and 14, but it was called off a week before it was due to begin as PCS (the Public and Commercial Services Union) were waiting for the Home Office to ‘demonstrate they are genuinely seeking a resolution,’ according the organisation’s general secretary Fran Heathcote.

Travellers wait in a long queue to pass through the security check at Heathrow on June 1, 2022 in London, England.

They are responsible for refuelling aircraft at Heathrow from 35 airlines including Virgin Atlantic, Delta, Emirates, Air France, Japan Airlines, Bulgaria Air and Rwanda Air.

It is a Bank Holiday weekend – one of the busiest travelling weekends of the year.

Another strike will take place for almost a week, from Tuesday, May 7, to Monday, May 13.

This is due to a separate dispute involving members of Unite the union who work in passenger services and security.

Why are border control staff striking?

Heathrow Border Force workers are striking over changes to their working conditions, PCS trade union revealed earlier in April.

The strike will see more than 300 of its members walk out over an issue with the new rostering system, which PSC representatives claim ‘would have a detrimental effect on all the current staff and leave nearly 250 without a job on passport control, including many with disabilities or caring responsibilities.’

Unite also confirmed that, between May 7 and May 13, almost 800 workers will walk out over plans to outsource hundreds of roles in an effort to cut costs.

British Airways plane parked on the terminal

‘There are no job losses as a result of these changes, and we continue to discuss with Unite the implementation of these changes for the small number of colleagues impacted,’ a spokesperson for Heathrow previously told Reuters.

‘To confirm, we have robust contingency plans in place for each of these individual areas and anticipate no impact on passenger journey.’

Heathrow said the airport’s reorganisation would see all passenger-facing security sourced in-house, with small trolley operations and passenger logistics teams transferred to third-party suppliers (who already work with the airport).

Why are refuelling staff striking?

Refuelers say their employer imposed drastic cuts to the terms and conditions of new staff recruited since January 2024.

Unite accused AFS, a joint venture between oil and gas companies, of ‘bully-boy tactics’, saying it is attacking the ‘most vulnerable new staff’ in its workplace by offering them reduced pension and sickness benefits.

The action follows similar walkouts in 20923 (Picture: Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images

General secretary Sharon Graham said: ‘AFS is behaving appallingly by attacking the T&Cs of new members of staff – those it views as the easiest to intimidate.

‘But Unite will not stand for such bully-boy tactics and we will be backing our members in their fight for improved pensions and sick pay for all staff.’

Another 800 of Unite members are planning to strike later in May due to what the union called ‘deplorable action’ from the airport’s management.

The union said workers in passenger services, who assist travellers to catch connecting flights, trolley operations, and security guards will have their jobs outsourced by June.

Ms Graham vowed to give striking staff ‘unrelenting support’, adding: ‘Heathrow Airport’s actions are deplorable.

‘It is raking in massive profits for the bosses while trying to squeeze every last penny out of its workforce.’

What impact will the industrial action have on flights?

Delayed passengers at an aiport

Border Force staff mostly only check arrivals at UK airports, so the greatest impact will be on people landing from abroad.

Regarind the refuelling strike, Unite says the strike action ‘will inevitably cause widespread disruption across the airport, leading to delays and disruption’.

Though it isn’t clear what plans the Home Office has for dealing with potential staff shortages, during the last walk-out in December 2022, military personnel and civil servant volunteers were trained up to replace Border Force staff and deal with delays.

If passengers do experience delays to their flight as a result, they won’t be able to access compensation as the issue is beyond the airlines’ control.

However, the airline will need to provide frequent updates and, if needed, an alternative flight, as well as meals and accommodation during the delays.

What is Heathrow Airport’s response?

Heathrow Airport is working on contingencies with AFS to manage any potential disruption during the Early May Bank Holiday.

It said it has ‘robust’ measures planned, adding that passengers can book flights from Heathrow with confidence.

Regarding the industrial action planned by staff in passenger services, a spokesperson said: ‘We are reorganising our operations to deliver better results for our customers.

‘There are no job losses as a result of these changes, and we continue to discuss with Unite the implementation of these changes for the small number of colleagues impacted.

‘Unite’s threats of potential industrial action are unnecessary, and customers can be reassured that we will keep the airport operating smoothly, just like we have in the past.’

Passengers look at the departures board at Heathrow airport in London

Heathrow expects summer holiday season to be ‘busiest on record’

Passengers numbers this year predicted to hit 82.4m but airport’s future uncertain, with proposed £6bn sale in doubt

Heathrow is expecting its busiest ever summer holiday season but faces uncertainty over its long-term future as the proposed £6bn sale of the UK’s biggest airport remains in doubt.

The airport said on Wednesday that the summer getaway this year was expected to be “the busiest on record” and promised to have “robust” plans in place to keep the airport “running smoothly”, even if staff strikes held last year are repeated.

The number of passengers using the airport this year is expected to hit more than 82.4 million. This would make it the busiest year on record, and above the previous high in 2019, when 80.9 million travelled through the airport. Heathrow’s future is in the balance amid reports that a proposed deal to buy the airport from the Spanish construction company Ferrovial is on hold after Macquarie ruled out taking a stake.

The Australian investment firm had been interested in taking a 35% stake but withdrew its interest and no other bidders have emerged, the Telegraph reported earlier this month.

The deal would have supported a bid by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the private equity firm Ardian to take a 25% stake in the airport. However, the future of the airport’s ownership is now unclear.

The company said it made an £83m pre-tax profit for the three months until the end of March, up from the £139m loss it made for the same period in 2023.

However, it said it would need to maintain strong cost control and provide efficiencies to close a £400m gap in the latest settlement it received from the Civil Aviation Authority on the level of charges for passengers.

Earlier this month, the airport called on the government to scrap a new £10 charge for overseas travellers using the airport to connect to other flights, warning that it was hitting traveller numbers and putting UK airports at a competitive disadvantage to European rivals.

Heathrow repeated this call on Wednesday, while also urging ministers to rethink the “anti-growth” tourist tax, which means tourists pay VAT on purchases.

Javier Echave, the chief financial officer at Heathrow, said: “On the horizon is Heathrow’s busiest summer yet with more passengers and destinations served than ever before. We’re ready to continue delivering.”

The trade union Unite said earlier this week that hundreds of workers at Heathrow would strike in a dispute over the outsourcing of jobs.

after newsletter promotion

Unite said about 800 of its members would launch a week of strikes from 7-13 May.

The union said workers in passenger services – who assist travellers to catch connecting flights – trolley operations and security guards will have their jobs outsourced by June.

Heathrow has said there will be no job losses due to the overhaul of operations and is continuing talks with Unite over those affected by the move.
