London has some of the best breweries in the UK: These are the ones you should try
By Tania Ballantine
It’s hard to believe that just over a decade ago, you could count London 's breweries on your fingers. Even if you’d had a run-in with a gangster and didn’t quite have all your fingers. There are now well over a hundred – there’s been a boom. It’s partly due to the enthusiasm of the home-brew brigade: people following their passion, even if it means working in their shed. But the best breweries have one thing in common: they’re accessible. They have somewhere to sit. They play music. They serve a bite to eat. A visit is more than just a chance to drink their carefully crafted offering, it’s a day out. They have brilliant brews but also a terrific taproom or vibey al-fresco space, often both. Not only do they all have decent food, some even sell spirits, wine and cocktails too. Here’s our pick of the capital’s top names. Plus, for right now – whether they deliver (good news: they all do).
North London
Tottenham Keep an eye on the weather forecast: Beavertown is best when the weather’s good. There are 30 tables outside, each seating at least six, so there’s already space for 180 drinkers, hopefully more if restrictions ease from Monday 12 April. Adding to the party vibe is a weekly changing rotation of food traders, plus house brews from Beavertown’s 10 outdoor draft lines, including classics such as Neck Oil Session IPA. Fancy a change? It serves canned cocktails too. Time for a sun dance, we think.
Address: Beavertown Brewery, Unit 17, Lockwood Industrial Park, Mill Mead Road, Tottenham, London N17 9QP Delivery option?: Yes Website: beavertownbrewery.co.uk
The Goodness
Wood Green Run by friends turned brewers, Goodness embraces the ethos of, well, goodness. All its beers are gluten-reduced and vegan, and have consciously positive names such as Yes! or Sunshine. But it’s not just about beer: there’s wine (organic or biodynamic) and plenty of spirits, plus terrific pizzas, from the three-pork ‘dirty piggie’ Maialona to the aubergine-strewn Vesuvio. Kids are genuinely welcome, there are heaters in the yard as well as a gazebo plus live acoustic music on Thursdays if permitted, and the hangar-like interior has a counter to watch the brewing and even a huge indoor banana tree.
Address: The Goodness Brewing Company, 5a Clarendon Yard, Coburg Road, Haringey, London N22 6TZ Delivery option?: Yes Website: thegoodnessbrew.co
King’s Cross
Hands up who loves gathering around a fire? Us too. So we’re oh-so excited about the new campfire space coming to the courtyard of the Two Tribes brewery in April 2021. There’ll be an open fire pit with feasts dished up by grillers and big-name guest chefs, plus a rotating line-up of live DJs and musicians and an al-fresco bar operating out of a freight container. Expect all the usual smash hits – including Metroland Session IPA and Dream Factory Pale Ale – plus cider, wine and spirits for non-hop lovers.
Address: Two Tribes Brewing, Tileyard Studios, Tileyard Road, London N7 9AH Delivery option?: Yes Website: twotribes.co.uk
South London
Bermondsey Love a counter? Then you’ll love Fourpure. A huge, horseshoe-shaped centrepiece dominates the revamped double-height taproom, with tables all around and a mezzanine level above. You can sit outdoors too, for industrial-estate vibes – it’s part of the Bermondsey Beer Mile. Team your brews (choose from Shapeshifter, Juicebox and the best-selling Basecamp) with something from resident street-food van Oh My Dog! And Fourpure is also due to start selling wine when it reopens.
Address: Fourpure Brewing Co, Bermondsey Trading Estate, 22 Rotherhithe New Road, Southwark, London SE16 3LL Delivery option?: Yes Website: fourpure.com
Little Faith
Deptford Once home to a Pentecostal church, Deptford’s Little Faith is all about community. Locals gather inside on converted pews or outside in the yard, where a second bar operates out of a shipping container. Team your New Colours (its bestselling IPA) with the vegetarian-leaning Indian street food , or check out yard neighbours such as Caribbean BBQ crew Jerk Off and sourdough legend Bread and Butler. There’s also wine, whisky, gin and rum, plus guest beers by the bottle. Oh, and a 1am licence on Friday and Saturday nights, plus live music. Amen to that.
Address: Little Faith Beer, Artworks, 3 Creekside, London SE8 4SA Delivery option?: Yes Website: littlefaithbeer.com
East London
Hackney Just how many breweries can you get to by boat? Crate’s waterside space is the jewel in the crown, and if you don’t own your own blow-up dinghy you can hire kayaks further down the canal. Landlubbers also adore the top-notch brews (five beers and a cider), plus guest beers, wine and cocktails served from its own boat. Thin-crust, stone-baked pizzas – from the best-selling spicy salami to the more esoteric kashmiri dahl or Middle Eastern lamb – are another draw.
Address: Crate Brewery, Unit 7 Queen's Yard, Hackney Wick, London E9 5EN Delivery option?: Yes Website: cratebrewery.com
People’s Park Tavern
Victoria Park Less pub in a park , more festival set-up, this joint’s USP is its beer garden. A joyous space backing onto Victoria Park, it has a staggering 400 seats, which you can actually book ahead of time (though if you’re a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants type, don’t panic: spots are also held back for walk-ins). At the on-site brewery, specials such as Garden Lager sit alongside core lines including Ripper and Word, but there are spirits, wines and cocktails too. Oh, and a barbecue. Come winter, the outdoor area is covered and heated and serves winter roasts. Parklife at its best.
Address: The People’s Park Tavern, 360 Victoria Park Road, London E9 7BT Delivery option?: Yes, through laine.shop Website: peoplesparktavern.pub
Greenwich One of the capital’s largest craft breweries, Meantime is also blessed with a supremely stylish taproom – hexagonal floors and mid-century wooden furniture – that begs to be settled into for a tasting session. Because at this award-winning spot, it’s all about the beers: even the burgers come with sauces made from the core house brews (Anytime IPA Hot and Sweet, Yakima Red Ale BBQ, Easytime Lager Marinara). Top tip: take some of the Chocolate Porter home with you – it’s perfect for putting in puddings.
Address: Meantime Brewing Company, Lawrence Trading Estate, Blackwall Lane, London SE10 0AR Delivery option?: Yes Website: meantimebrewing.com

Twickenham Fine Ales
Twickenham The oldest of London ’s indie microbreweries, Twickenham Fine Ales has many faces. Day to day it supplies pubs, including its own watering hole The Rifleman, which is a 10-minute walk away and has an outside patio with tables, umbrellas and heaters. But when the Harlequins are playing, the brewery opens for pre-match drinks and barbecues using organic meat from the neighbouring butcher. Note: it’s usually standing room only. Though if you’re in Twickenham on match day, you’re already made of stern stuff.
Address: Twickenham Brewery, 18 Mereway Road, London TW2 6RG Delivery option?: Yes Website: twickenham-fine-ales.co.uk
Hammersmith OK, so Brewdog SheBu isn’t technically a brewery. Its house beers are made off-site – in Ellon in Aberdeenshire and Tower Bridge – but have always been top-notch and trailblazing, so we’re sneaking it in anyway. Taste your way around 40 taps (though maybe not all in one night), plus guest beers: just ask for a flight. There’s wine, draft cider from Hawkes in Bermondsey and crowd-pleasing food from burgers, wings and fries to vegan fried chicken and wholesome salad bowls. Kids, dogs – everyone’s welcome.
Address: Brewdog Shepherd’s Bush, 15 Goldhawk Road, Hammersmith, London W12 8QQ Delivery option?: Yes Website: brewdog.com

Twickenham Fine Ales
Brewery Original site: Ryecroft Works, Edwin Road, Twickenham TW2 6SP (Richmond upon Thames) Current site: 18 Mereway Road, Twickenham TW2 6RG (Richmond upon Thames) twickenham-fine-ales.co.uk First sold beer :November 2004 (at original site)
Now something of a London veteran, Twickenham Fine Ales is the fourth oldest of all the London breweries and the oldest independent standalone brewery in the capital. When opened on redundancy money by former IT professional Steve Brown in 2004, it was the first brewery in Twickenham since Cole & Burrows closed in 1906 but passed under the radar of all but a few drinkers by selling only to very local outlets.
All that changed late in 2012 following a major expansion from its original site to long-sought new premises near Twickenham Green. The brewery has continued to grow since, most recently in 2016 when a new 40 hl kit and more fermenters were added. The first head brewer was Tom Madeiros, who joined from Grand Union, a failed Hillingdon micro; he was succeeded by Stuart Medcalf, formerly of W J King, and, since January 2018, Stephen Holland.
Though the beers are now sold widely, the brewery retains a strong local base, and Steve is determined any future expansion would require a site that’s also in Twickenham. Much is made of the locality’s association with rugby union, a sport where real ale is the traditional tipple of choice. Taproom openings on match days at the main Twickenham stadium or at local team Harlequins’ Stoop ground nearby have become a local institution. In August 2019, the company realised a long-held ambition by taking on the Rifleman, a corner pub only a few streets away.
Beers tend towards the traditional with a modern twist, with cask still an important part of the business, alongside keg and off-site bottling and canning.

Twickenham Fine Ales was the first brewery in Twickenham since Cole's Brewery closed in 1906. Twickenham Brewery took over running the Rifleman in 2019. It's a small, cosy little pub, with a real fire and a warm reception, and in the warmer months a lovely hidden garden at the rear. There's a dartboard to play, but if you'd rather watch sport, there's a 65" TV for the big games too.
