Guide to The Best Seats on the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood
No trip to Universal Studios Hollywood is complete without experiencing our signature attraction, The World-Famous Studio Tour . This legit journey through the actual sets of some of your favorite movies and television shows is mixed with exhilarating attractions and entertaining insights, making it an educational thrill ride unlike anything you can experience anywhere else. And while itâs safe to say there are no bad seats on the Studio Tour, there are definitely some preferred seats, depending on what youâre most excited to see. Let me break it down for you.
Flash Flood
The flash flood on our Old Mexico set was added to our backlot tour back in 1968. You may recognize it from films like âBig Fat Liarâ and â Fletch Livesâ, but seeing it in person is truly something else. A rainstorm starts out of nowhere and before you know it, 10,000 gallons of water are rushing toward you, blasting through windows, knocking over signs, when suddenly⊠*WHOOSH* It stops just short of washing away the entire tram. How? Movie magic, of course.
Best Seats: Car 2, Left Side
King Kong 360 3-D
The ïŹrst of its kind on the Studio Tour, this attraction was created under the direction of âKing Kongâ director Peter Jackson. As you make your way through Skull Island, the tram is suddenly surrounded by hungry dinosaurs and giant insects.
Luckily, Kong is on your side. Actually, heâs on all sides, throwing punches (watch out for dinosaur saliva) and catching tram cars. Good thing the tram roof is built to support that kind of weight.
…it is, right?
Best Seats: Car 2, Right Side â if you want to see Kongâs epic entrance Car 4, Left Side â if you want to see what happens to Car 5
War of the Worlds
One of the most well-known sets from the Studio Tour is the plane crash from Steven Spielbergâs, âWar of the Worldsâ. Now I wonât tell you all the fun facts about this set (thatâs what the tour is for), but it is a real 747 airplane that was torn apart for the movie and it is truly something to behold up close. As the neighborhood appeared in the film, you can still see the smoking wreckage of the crash and the scattered debris. Donât worry â the tram will stop for a moment so you can snap plenty of pictures.
Best Seats: Car 3, Left Side
Some may recognize the peaceful village around the water as Cabot Cove, from the classic show, âMurder, She Wroteâ. However, this section is most commonly known as Jaws Lake, home of the unstoppable great white shark from the movie âJawsâ. After greeting one of the divers in the water, the tram will pause on the dock (for safety, I guess?), allowing the shark to cause some destruction by the gas pumps before attacking the tram. This is why they tell you to keep your arms inside the vehicle, folks.
Best Seats: Car 2, Right Side â to get a good look at the shark just as he emerges Car 3, Right Side â to get a good look at the shark and enjoy those fire effects (if itâs chilly outside)
Earthquake â The Big One
This part of the tour has been featured in movies like âBeverly Hills Cop IIIâ and the TV show âBonesâ. Much like King Kong 360 3-D, this attraction delivers thrills and action on all sides, so there are no bad seats. The difference here is that all the effects are practical (no 3D glasses needed). Plus, if you missed the fire effects from Jaws Lake or the flood from Old Mexico, Earthquake features both â and theyâre on opposite sides!
Best Seats: Car 3, Left Side â for those fire effects (just watch out for the gas truck) Car 3, Right Side â for that impressive flood
Courthouse Square
Your tour guide can rattle off dozens of different movies and TV shows that have been filmed on this beautiful block of the backlot (and likely a few current productions!), but none more well-known than âBack to the Futureâ. While some of the facades have changed, youâll still be taken back to 1955 (or 1985, or 2015). Thereâs plenty of fun stuff to see on all sides, but the tram tends to pass by the iconic courthouse and clocktower just once.
Best Seats: Car 2 or 3, Left Side â for the best view of the courthouse
New York Street & Colonial Street & Six Points Texas
A good portion of the tour is spent traveling down streets designed to look like any city but Hollywood. This is where the history of filmmaking on the Universal backlot comes alive with facades everywhere. Because this is a working studio, the route can vary day-to-day!
Best Seats: Anywhere!
Fast & Furious â Supercharged
Thereâs a government spy on board the tram and the villainous Owen Shaw is on his way to take them out (and I donât mean to dinner). Fortunately, the âFast & Furiousâ crew is aware of the situation and are here to protect you and everyone else on board. After a failed attempt to hide out at Sullivanâs Garage, the tram finds itself in a high-speed chase through the streets of LA, with intense action happening all around it. This attraction uses similar technology to King Kong 360 3-D, meaning that once again there arenât any bad seats. To take it a step further, the action throughout is pretty similar on either side, and one character is even carried along both sides of the tram by helicopter (before jumping back into their moving vehicle, of course).
Best Seats: Any Car, Left Side â for a good look at the souped-up vehicles right when you enter Sullivanâs Garage Any Car, Right Side â for a good look at the pre-show dance party and Shawâs arrival
As you can see, no matter where you sit on the World-Famous Studio Tour, youâre bound to get an unforgettable experience. Just remember to stay seated while the tram is in motion, and donât put those 3D glasses on just yet. Action!

Universal Studios' Famous Tour is Celebrates 60 Years with a Big Updated Attraction
The beloved Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour is getting a movie-themed upgrade to celebrate its 60th year of operation.
Universal Studios Hollywood theme park is celebrating a massive milestone on its famous Glamor Tram tour with a big update to the attraction fans know and love.
Before the modern Universal Studios Hollywood theme park became a world-class destination in the heart of Los Angeles, visitors first got to experience it as the Universal Studios Tour. Open to the public on July 15, 1964, visitors were treated to a two-hour "Glamor Tram" ride around the working Universal Pictures movie lot. Stops included an exhibit of Edith Head's costumes, a makeup demo, a stop at the studio commissary and a staged Western shoot out.
Sixty years later, Universal Studios Hollywood is now a full blown theme park with whole lands to visit like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World . And the venerable Studio Tour is still included with the price of admission. Celebrating its diamond anniversary, the ever-evolving Studio Tour will mark the milestone anniversary with a dedicated experiential program that will run from April 26 through August 11, 2024.

Back are several of the red and white candy-striped Glamor Trams, along with new stops on the backlot tour, a refurbished âEarthquakeâThe Big Oneâ attraction, special photos ops, and limited edition foods and merch to honor the attraction that literally birthed Universal Studios Hollywood. To help plan your trip to see this update studio tour, below is everything movie fans need to know about the 60th anniversary celebration.
What's new on Universal's Studio Tour?
From late April to early August this summer at Universal Studios Hollywood, the Studio Tour will allow guests the rare opportunity to disembark the tram to step onto a legendary movie set where an original, fully restored 1964 vintage Glamor Tram will be parked. While there, guests can get their picture taken with the classic tram, with a giant King Kong backdrop or with the theme parkâs original hanging Jaws shark.
Once back on the tour route, guests will experience the completely updated âEarthquakeâThe Big Oneâ attraction which debuted at the park in 1989. Refurbished to reflect modern technology and special effects, the water and pyro heavy event stop will amaze riders with some dramatic movie magic. For old-timers of the tour experience, there will also be a temporary return of the 1976 Runaway Train stop, complete with the retro warning bells and sirens alarm.

The Studio Tour will also wind its way through Courthouse Square, where the clock tower scene was shot in the time travel classic, Back to the Future . For the celebration, an original time machine picture car will sit prominently on display, along with an actor portraying the Doc Brown character.
And for the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World fans, the tour will add some dino fun with a Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur display used in the promotion of Universal Picturesâ Jurassic World movie placed next to a paddock of "wild dinosaurs" that can be heard screeching and clamoring to escape.
Universal Studios is getting its own Hollywood Sign
Another famous Hollywood landmark is also celebrating a big anniversary this year - the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. Since the sign is around the hill and can't be seen from the theme park, Universal Studios Hollywood is partnering with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Hollywood Sign Trust to give these two cultural icons their due...together.
The theme park is debuting the first-ever original replica of the Hollywood Sign which will be situated inside the studio backlot tour, adjacent to the place where riders can step off the tram. Per the Universal Studios press release, the large scale reproduction has been faithfully recreated according to the historic records of the iconic landmark. In this special, multi-year partnership, Studio Tour guests will get to see the 10-foot tale replica on the hillside during the tour.
Universal Studio's 60th anniversary food, snacks and merchandise
If you're a visitor who loves to be tempted by limited edition food, snack and drink options, the Studio Tour 60th Anniversary will offer an array of new dining options at several Upper and Lower lot locations. A special Dining Pass will be available for purchase for the special menu items on the day of your visit. Guests can choose from six eligible menu items: a choice of two entrees, plus a choice of four snacks, sides, desserts or beverages at participating restaurants or food carts.

Hollywood & Dine will offer a new lineup of BBQ items. Melâs Diner will serve up refreshed Americana classics, including TV dinner style meatloaf and fried chicken entrees. And the City Snack Shop standalone outdoor food cart on the Upper Lot, will be transformed into a Glamor Tram to serve up a selection of treats including the Glam Tram Cookie, Film Reel Cookie Sandwich, Giant 60 th Pretzel, 60 th Celebration Cookies and Banana Breath Popcorn.
For Studio Tour stans, there will also be Glamor Tram collectibles including a 60 th anniversary popcorn bucket and Glamor Tram themed housewares, clothing, accessories and candy.

The trams on the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot tour trams are going electric.
Four electric trams have been put in circulation to carry visitors through the historic Universal backlot — the theme park’s signature attraction — officials announced today. By 2025, the park plans to convert its entire fleet of 21 backlot trams from diesel-hydraulic power to electric.
“I am extremely proud of this innovative undertaking and our commitment to creating a zero-emissions Studio Tour fleet in collaboration with our parent company and local partners,” Scott Strobl, Universal Studios Hollywood executive vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “This is just one of many steps we are taking to transform our business in line with Comcast NBCUniversal’s carbon neutral goal, all while pioneering first-class attractions for our guests.”

Park officials said the new trams are among the first and largest “battery-powered, off-road, high-torque and low-speed mass people movers in the U.S.”
In addition to reducing carbon emissions, the electric trams also run quieter, eliminating the engine noise that could occasionally hamper riders’ ability to hear the narration during the backlot tour.
According to the park, the electric trams will be charged before and after every trip through the studio backlot. The vehicles also build up charge during the tour whenever they travel downhill, thanks to a “regenerative braking feature.”
The project is a collaboration between Universal Studios Hollywood and L.A-based Complete Coach Works to reimagine the trams and move them from diesel-hydraulic engines to electric.
The project is made possible by a grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District — the local regulatory agency that works to reduce air pollution in the region. It was also supported by fund from Southern California Edison and, of course, Comcast NBCUniversal.
The backlot tour has been a Universal Studios staple for more than 50 years, carrying guests on a winding trip through one of Hollywood’s most historic lots, passing sites such as the Bates Motel and ominous hilltop home from Psycho , the Hill Valley town square from Back to the Future , Wisteria Lane from Desperate Housewives and New York and Western streets used in countless film productions.
The tour is also famed for its tour guides who narrate visitors’ trip through the backlot. Riders on the new electric buses will also be greeted by a video message from Today show co-host and weatherman Al Roker.

Universal Studios tram tossed âmultipleâ riders to the ground, accident investigators say

A tram vehicle at Universal Studios Hollywood threw âmultipleâ riders to the ground after it struck a guardrail near props from the âJurassic Parkâ film franchise in an accident that is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Details of the accident that took place Saturday night â amid the 60th anniversary of the attraction â remain sketchy, but the CHP said the agency has determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash that injured 15 park visitors.
For the record:
3:01 p.m. April 22, 2024 An earlier version of this article said 15 riders on the Universal Studios Hollywood tram attraction were thrown to the ground. The California Highway Patrol said âmultipleâ riders were thrown to the ground and that a total of 15 were injured.
The tram was driving through the storied Universal Studios back lot shortly after 9 p.m. when the crash occurred, according to authorities.
The linked tram cars passed by a set of props from the âJurassic Parkâ film franchise when the tram driver turned onto Avenue M and for some unknown reason the last car in the procession collided with the metal guardrail on the right side, the CHP said. This caused the tram to âtilt and eject multiple passengers from the tram,â authorities said in a news release.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call for service shortly after 9 p.m. for the crash and 15 passengers were transported to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The Los Angeles County Sheriffâs Department also responded to the scene but the CHP is the lead agency, a Universal Studios spokesperson said.
At least 14 hurt as MTA bus is part of four-vehicle ârollover collisionâ in South L.A.
Firefighters and paramedics were on the scene and had assessed and treated 14 people, including bus riders and other vehicle passengers.
March 28, 2024
âOur thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor,â Universal Studios said in a statement.
The theme park is working closely with authorities as Universal Studios continues its âreview of the incident and safety remains a top priority.â
The Studio Tour tram ride, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this week, will continue to operate with a modified route and the theme park will reinforce its âoperational and safety protocols.â
The status of the injured passengers was unclear as of Monday.
In many ways, the tram ride came to define the theme park.
Over the years, countless riders have enjoyed close encounters with a robotic shark depicting the blood-thirsty animal in the movie âJaws,â a terrifying stop outside the Bates Motel from the film classic âPsychoâ and a harrowing escape from the clutches of King Kong.

Newer film franchises have joined the tour, including a stroll through a suburban neighborhood wasted by aliens from the 2005 film âWar of the Worldsâ to a western-themed sideshow from Jordan Peeleâs 2022 movie âNope.â
The tram tour got its start in 1964 when Universal Studios executives noticed that food sales at the studio commissary shot up after local tour buses were allowed past the studio gates to let fans get a glimpse of the back lot movie sets and props.
The first iteration of the attraction were the pink-and-white Glamour Trams, which carried about 38,200 riders in the first year. Passengers paid $2.50 for a two-and-a-half hour tour that included stops to see a stunt show and a movie makeup exhibition.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park
The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.
Aug. 3, 2023
Later renamed the Universal Studios Studio Tour, the trams have since endured real life fires, labor strife, a series of expansions and at least one fatal accident.
The theme park launched a renovation project in 2022 to begin converting the diesel-hydraulic powered vehicles to run on electricity to reduce emissions. It is not clear if the tram that struck the guard rail was a newer electric vehicle or an older version.
This is not the first time an accident happened at the theme park. In 1986, a park employee was run over by the tram during a special Halloween âFright Nightsâ show . Paul Rebalde, 20, was stationed on a parked tram filled with mannequins dressed to look like corpses, the Sheriffâs Department said at the time.
While in costume, Rebalde was to leap from among the mannequins on the parked tram and frighten people passing on moving trams, but was trapped between the third and fourth sections of one of the four-section moving trams and was run over and dragged to his death, according to authorities. The Halloween-themed attraction was paused for several years and later rebranded âHalloween Horror Nights.â
More recently, a stunt performer was hospitalized after performing in the âWaterworldâ show in January 2023 . The performer was set on fire shortly before taking a leap off a tower in the showâs finale. The âWaterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacularâ show is inspired by the 1995 Kevin Costner film and opened months after the movieâs debut.

15 people injured in Universal Studios Hollywood tour tram crash
At least one person reportedly sustained critical injuries.
15 people were injured in a tram crash at Universal Studios Hollywood Saturday evening.
According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the victims were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. KTLA, however, reported at least one person sustained critical injuries.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department, "deputies responded to the lower parking lot of Universal Studios Hollywood regarding a tour tram collision. The collision caused several passengers to fall out of the vehicle."
The trams are used in the theme park's signature Studio Tour, transporting guests through iconic Hollywood film sets. It's unclear what caused the crash, or if any other vehicles were involved but LASD tells Entertainment Weekly that the "cause of the accident is still under investigation and there is no further information at this time."
The LACFD Public Information Office confirmed the incident in a tweet , writing "at 9:05 units were dispatched to a tram accident where 15 patients were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. CHP will be the lead investigatory agency for all further inquiries."
âSaturday night on the Studio Tour, a tram collided with a guard rail while making a left turn," a spokesperson for Universal Studios said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly . "Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor."
The statement continued, "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority. We have resumed Studio Tour operations with a modified route and are reinforcing our operational and safety protocols."
Earlier this month, Universal Studios Hollywood was hit with a lawsuit stemming from a 2022 incident in which passengers claim they were stranded while riding Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, an attraction that takes guests through notable locations in J.K. Rowling 's Wizarding World, including the Great Hall, the grounds of Hogwarts, and the Quidditch pitch.
