Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

Related: Why You Should Update All Your Software

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

Related: Why You Should Update Your Web Browser

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

Why Is Safari Not Updating on Your Mac?

If you’ve tried updating Safari on your Mac and encountered issues, several factors could be preventing the update. Let’s explore some common reasons for Safari failing to update on your Mac:

  • 🖥️ Outdated macOS : Safari is deeply integrated with macOS. If your operating system is outdated, it might not support the latest version of Safari. Ensure your macOS is up-to-date before attempting to update Safari.
  • 🌐 Internet Connection Issues : A stable internet connection is essential for downloading updates. Check if your Mac is connected to the internet and that the connection is stable.
  • 💾 Insufficient Storage : Updates often require free storage space. If your Mac is running low on space, it might not be able to download or install the update. Consider freeing up some storage.
  • 🚫 Server Issues : Sometimes, Apple’s servers might be overloaded or down, especially if a major update has just been released. If this is the case, try updating later.
  • 🛠️ Software Conflicts : Other software or utilities on your Mac might interfere with the update process. Consider disabling or uninstalling any recent apps or utilities and then try updating again.
  • 🔄 Automatic Updates Disabled : If you’ve disabled automatic updates, Safari might not update on its own. Check your settings to ensure automatic updates are enabled.
  • 🚧 Beta or Developer Versions : If you’re using a beta or developer version of Safari or macOS, you might face update issues. Consider switching to the stable release.

If you’ve checked all these factors and still can’t update Safari, it might be a good idea to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assistance.

Updating Safari promotes data security, eliminates bugs, and introduces new features. The process is easier than updating many other apps for Mac. Apple has done its users a great service by combining Safari updates with macOS updates.

update safari terminal

This leaves you with one less step to take, as it can be frustrating remembering to update apps and OS. Still, you might want to update Safari manually or check which version you have. Additionally, it might be helpful to reset Safari if you run into issues.

Let’s get into it and discuss a few helpful tips.

Key Takeaways

Why is it important to update safari on mac, how to update all my apps at once on mac, forcing safari to update on mac without updating the os, how can i tell if i’m using the most recent safari update, how can i quickly reset safari on my mac, updating safari with the terminal, why isn’t my version of safari updating, final words.

  • It’s important to update your macOS promptly to ensure Safari stays up to date.
  • You can force Safari to update on Mac without updating the entire OS, but you should stick to simply updating the whole OS.
  • You can update all your apps at once through the Software Updates tab in System Preferences.
  • You can check the Safari version by selecting “About” from the Safari drop-down menu.
  • Resetting Safari can help resolve issues and improve performance, but it removes installed extensions.
  • Outdated versions of Safari may no longer be supported and require OS updates or switching to alternative browsers, so it’s best to stay on top of things.

Updating Safari on your Mac is a key part of the regular maintenance you should already be operating on your computer.

Having the most up-to-date version of Safari promotes data security, especially if Safari is your default browser. Apple’s updates frequently eliminate prior security issues while preventing new ones from arising.

Failing to update the browser may result in more frequent bugs and irritating glitches.

Sometimes, it may be convenient to simply update everything all at once. This is especially true if it’s been a long period of time since your last big overhaul update.

Your Mac might already be set to have automatic updates. This setting can be found in System Preferences under the Software Updates tab.

If you have any software to update, you’ll see a notification. You may also receive push notifications for certain updates, depending on your Mac’s settings.

You can work around the OS rule. We don’t recommend it, as it’s always a better option to update your OS, as a general rule of thumb.

Open System Preferences as normal.

update safari terminal

Next, simply select the Software Update tab to see any available updates.

update safari terminal

Then, download and install the updated version of Safari. This should only take a few minutes.

Finally, restart your computer after updating Safari .

It’s easy to lose sight of which version of an app or software you’re using. Apple updates Safari with shocking frequency, so you may have fallen behind on an update or two without even realizing it.

Just launch Safari as you normally would. Then from the Safari drop-down menu, select About Safari .

update safari terminal

Then it will show you the version of Safari that you’re currently using.

If it’s been a while since you updated Safari, the browser may begin to experience issues like slow loading times. Resetting your browser can act as a fresh start .

The only downside to resetting your Safari app on Mac is that you will lose access to things like extensions that you’ve installed. To get those back, save them elsewhere so you can re-download them after you’ve finished resetting the browser.

Resetting Safari can be done manually or through a third-party app, but we always recommend using the manual method first before exploring other avenues. It’s not too difficult to reset Safari on Mac, but there isn’t a simple “reset button” available to do it in one click.

Take the following steps to reset Safari:

Find the Safari cache by selecting the “History” tab in the menu bar. Then, select “Clear History.” This will reset Safari to its default settings. From the Clear menu, select All History , and then Clear History .

Be careful – the Clear History button is located right next to the “Cancel” button.

Next, launch the browser and click on the Safari tab in the menu bar. From there, select Preferences from the list.

update safari terminal

In the Privacy panel, select Manage Website Data .

update safari terminal

Click the Remove All button in the lower left-hand corner. The Delete Now button will finalize this process and erase any old, unwanted website data.

update safari terminal

This method is a little trickier, especially if you prefer to avoid using the Terminal. Still, it can be helpful if you just want to update Safari and not your OS yet.

For example, if you were using the latest macOS Ventura, you would use the command:

You should quit Safari before doing this. The softwareupdate command will try to force quit the app anyway before it installs.

You should also safely reboot your computer after you install the Safari update with the Terminal.

If Safari is not updating on your Mac, it may be due to having an older version of the operating system.

Assess the time it’s been since your last macOS update. If you have an older Mac, it may have even been years since your last major system update.

Unfortunately, Apple sometimes retires versions of Safari if they are simply too old to keep up with the times.

You can fix this issue by updating your OS, which will update your browser. However, if you don’t want to part ways with your OS just yet, your best bet would be to try another browser like Chrome or Firefox.

Some people only use one browser forever, which is fine, but having two on your Mac can save you from several problems in the future.

Safari has been the default browser for Apple products since January 2003. And many users have loved it the whole time. Like many apps, Safari updates alongside the rest of macOS. Fortunately, this is an easy process. This article discusses all of these tips.

How to Update Safari on a Mac

Find out how to update Safari on your Mac to keep the browser running as smoothly and securely as possible.

If privacy, performance, and power efficiency matter to you while browsing online, then you have no reason to use anything other than Safari on your Mac. To get the best possible experience, however, you should install Safari updates when available.

The latest Safari updates come with not only feature enhancements but also critical bug fixes and security patches. Below, we'll teach you how to update Safari on a Mac.

How Do Safari Updates Work?

New Safari updates come bundled with macOS updates. But rather than installing everything, you can choose to apply updates only related to Safari.

Still, it's a good idea to install any other system updates when you have the time to improve the stability of other native apps and the operating system in general. Bug fixes are also one of the important reasons to keep your Mac updated , and that extends to Safari as well.

Additionally, it's not possible to update Safari to the most recent version unless you use a relatively new version of macOS. For example, you can't experience the newest Safari features if you don't have the latest version of macOS installed on your Mac.

But you can still apply the latest minor updates for older Safari versions regardless. Since the way to update Safari varies slightly between macOS versions, be sure to check which macOS version is installed on your Mac before processing.

How to Update Safari in macOS Ventura and Later

The process of updating Safari on the Mac is straightforward. If you use Safari on a Mac running macOS Ventura or later, you can get the update by visiting the Software Update section in System Settings. Here's what you need to do:

  • Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and choose System Settings from the dropdown.
  • Select General from the left pane, and then click Software Update on the right.
  • Wait for a moment while your Mac scans for new software updates.
  • Select More Info .
  • Select Safari-specific updates (if available), then click Install Now.

On the same page, you can also enable automatic updates. That way, you won't have to install updates for your system manually.

How to Update Safari in macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, and Mojave

If your Mac is running macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave, updating Safari is similar to how you would update it in macOS Ventura, except that you'll be using the System Preferences panel. So, follow these steps:

  • Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the dropdown.
  • Select Software Update .
  • Now, click on More Info .
  • Select any Safari-specific updates if available, and then click Install Now.

How to Update Safari in macOS High Sierra and Earlier

In macOS 10.13 High Sierra and older versions of the Mac operating system, you need to use the Mac App Store to update Safari instead. Follow the instructions below:

  • Open the App Store app on your Mac.
  • Head to the Updates tab.
  • Wait until the Mac App Store scans for new software updates.
  • Click on More within the Software Update section.
  • Now, click on Update next to Safari.

Run the Latest Safari Version on Your Mac

Not all Safari updates end up making a big splash on the Mac. In fact, you may barely notice a difference with most of them. But the various under-the-hood improvements from each update do stack up over time.

Despite Apple products usually performing updates flawlessly, there may be times when your computer might get stuck during the update process. But don't worry; there are ways to overcome that obstacle.

How to Update Apps on Mac Using Terminal

David Morelo

Learning how to update apps on Mac using Terminal can significantly streamline the maintenance of multiple Macs and, as a result, reduce your workload. Using a combination of system commands and open-source repositories, you can update both macOS software and Mac App Store software using Terminal.

Install macOS System and Software Updates Using Terminal

Softwareupdate flags, update mac app store software using terminal.

You can update your Mac using Terminal and the softwareupdate tool. This tool installs the same system and software updates found in the Software Update section of the System Settings app, and many users have reported it to be faster than the System Settings app.

To use it, launch the Terminal app from Application -> Utilities . Enter the softwareupdate -l command to list available updates. If updates are there, softwareupdate will display them.

Softwareupdate List Available Updates

To install all available updates, execute sudo softwareupdate -ia --verbose . This command runs the softwareupdate tool with administrator privileges and tells it to install all updates while providing a detailed view of the update progress. You will be asked to enter your administrator password, then just wait for the update process to finish.

Softwareupdate Tool Verbose Installation Of Updates

The behavior of the softwareupdate tool can be modified using a variety of different flags, some of which we’ve already used in the previous section of this article. Below is a list of commonly used flags:

  • The --verbose flag is optional, but it will give live status reports as updates are installed. If you have many updates to process, this flag will keep you abreast of the current status.
  • The -i flag stands for “install” and will begin the installation process for selected apps.
  • The -a flag stands for “all.” It will install all available updates.
  • The -r flag stands for “recommended.” For example, softwareupdate -ir will install only “recommended” updates.
  • The -h flag stands for “help” and will reveal all available commands.
  • To install just one update, use softwareupdate -i [package name] . For example, softwareupdate -i RemoteDesktopClient-3.9.2 will install only the RemoteDesktopClient 3.9.2 update.
  • To ignore specific updates, use the --ignore flag. For example, softwareupdate --ignore RemoteDesktopClient-3.9.2 will hide the 3.9.2 update of RemoteDesktopClient.

By default, macOS does not contain a command line utility for updating apps from the Mac App Store . However, you can install Dmitry Rodionov’s mas utility to add this functionality to your Mac.

Launch the Terminal app ( Application -> Utilities ), and, if you haven’t already, install Homebrew using the following Terminal command:

Homebrew is an open-source package manager that makes it easy to install, update, and manage third-party software from Terminal. Let’s immediately put it to use by installing the aforementioned mas utility using the brew install mas command. When the installation is complete, type in mas to see a list of all available mas commands.

Mas Tool Listing All Available Commands In Terminal

For example, enter mas list to see a list of installed Mac App Store apps, or type mas outdated to see only apps with available updates. To update all apps, simply use mas upgrade . The process will update each app and notify you upon completion.

Mas Updating All Outdated Apps

This guide has taught you how to update apps on Mac using Terminal commands. For those managing multiple Macs, this approach is not only time-saving, but also offers a higher degree of control over the update process. How To Update Safari on an Old Mac: What to Know

Nick deCourville

For those looking to update Safari on an Old Mac, I don’t really have the best news. I was looking to update the Safari browser on an older system, and what I discovered was a bit of a letdown. While you have some options, they’re a bit limited. Continue reading to learn more about Safari on an old Mac.

How to Update Safari on an Old Mac

If you need to update Safari on an old Mac, unfortunately, Safari is connected to whatever version of macOS you’re using . If you are unable to update to the latest version of macOS, you will only be able to use the version of Safari that supports your operating system. However, there is a way to check to see if you can update Safari.

1. Check for Safari Update

If you want to check to see if you can update Safari, then you will want to check your System Preferences/Settings the same way you would if you were updating macOS. Note that the photos below are just examples of the steps you will take.

Time needed:  2 minutes

To check for an update to Safari.

Update Safari Old Mac System Preferences

Unfortunately, this is likely to be your only option in terms of specifically using Safari on your Old Mac.

2. Use a Third-Party Browser

If you are unable to update Safari, remember that there are plenty of third-party browsers available, even for older devices. Some users recommend WaterFox for its similarity to Safari and ease of use on older machines. Of course, Firefox is also incredibly popular and is available on the Apple App Store . Personally, I am a big fan of Google Chrome and it is also available on the Apple App Store .

While this may not be the best news, you still want to do your best to keep your browser as up-to-date as you can. This is especially true if you are using an older machine that is no longer receiving security updates. In fact, you may want to consider how to protect an old Mac . You may also want to look at the best antivirus for an old Mac .

Update Safari on macOS

Updated at: Feb 15, 2022

This guide will step you through the process of updating the Safari web browser on macOS.

Do you need to know what version of Safari do I have?

macOS automatically looks for updates

macOS will regularly & automatically check for updates to Safari (and any other software you have installed via the App Store) and prompt you to install updates as they are found.

It should prompt you in the top-right hand corner of the screen when updates are found. If you want to manually check for updates and install them, follow these steps:

Open the App Store

Click the Apple menu icon in the top left-hand corner of your screen.

Screenshot of The Apple Menu icon in the top bar

The system menu will appear, click the " App Store... " item.

Screenshot of the App Store menu item

This starts the App Store application.

Go to the Updates tab

Along the top of the App Store window which has just opened will be several tabs (or buttons). Click the one on the far-right named Updates

Screenshot of the Updates item

Find and activate the Safari update

The Update screen may look different to the one in the screenshots. Version numbers shown here are examples and may change depending on what is considered the latest version...

On this screen, the App Store will show you all of the updates which are available to you.

It will bundle all of the System Applications (eg iTunes, Safari, Security Updates etc) which have updates available into one main "Software Update" item - shown in the following image.

Screenshot of the App Store menu item

If you click the UPDATE button, it will install all of those updates in one go. Notice that in some cases this may also require you to restart your computer.

If you click the UPDATE ALL button, it will install all of the System Application updates, as well as any Third Party updates - you may be required to restart with this option as well.

It is generally a good idea to install all of the available updates, but be aware: this may change how some of your software functions in the future. You should always have a backup of your system before you install System Updates.

Upgrading just Safari

If you want to upgrade just Safari and install none of the other available updates, click the blue " More " link; this will expand the System Applications, allowing you to pick and choose which updates to install.

An expanded list of software which has available updates:

Screenshot of the expanded list of software which has updates - you can choose particular ones to update.

Choose which update/s to install by clicking either the Update or Update all button.

App Store will now update Safari on macOS

The latest version of Safari available for your system will download and install itself. This may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Screenshot showing the Safari update installing.

You can see the blue progress bar showing how much of the installation has occured.

Safari is now up to date

Screenshot of updates installed in the last 30 days.

Safari is now shown in the Updates installed in the Last 30 Days section of the App Store Updates.

If you chose to also install other App updates, these should be included there as well.

Congratulations, you have now ensured that your copy of Safari is up to date. Confirm this by using our page to check if your web browser is up to date .

Updating in the future

In normal circumstances, the App Store will continue to check for updates and prompt you to install them. If for some reason App Store wasn't able to update Safari, please speak to your IT Support team for further help.

The Terminal "open" command does not control how you interact with Safari, and cannot direct Safari to create a new tab. However, it can be done with a short Zsh (or Bash) script assigned to a shell as a function, alias, or in this example, a Zsh function that is available to you when you launch the Terminal application.

Put the following code in your newly created ~/.zshenv file. This file is automatically read by Zsh on opening a new Terminal, and the function will then be available for you to run on the Terminal command-line:

Once you have added this in the ~/.zshenv file, you can make it immediately active by:

And, to open a new browser tab in Safari, you run the function in the Terminal as:

Tested in macOS 11.5.2 on an M1 mini.

You may be able to make it even simpler by using the "open" command like this:

I would suggest trying the "-n" option as well if it does not open a new window/tab. The "-n" option allows opening another instance of the app.

You will want to replace "<URL>" with the proper URL you want Safari to open. I suggest keeping the double quotes.

How to Run Mac Software Update via the Terminal

update safari terminal

Jim Tanous Read more March 5, 2018

mac app store updates

  • Launch the Terminal application (which can be found in the /Applications/Utilities folder or by searching for it with Spotlight ).

mac software update terminal list

  • To install  all available software updates, instead use the command  sudo softwareupdate -i -a . The “-a” switch simply instructs the command to install all updates. Again, you’ll need to enter your admin password when prompted.
  • There’s no traditional progress bar, but you will see updated text entries in the Terminal window as each step is completed, letting you know both when certain updates have been downloaded and when the entire installation process is complete. If you installed software updates that require a reboot, you’ll see a final message instructing you to restart your Mac. You can do this via the normal macOS interface, but since we’re already using UNIX commands in Terminal, you can also type  sudo shutdown -r now , which instructs shutdown command to restart the Mac (“-r”) immediately (“now”).

Benefits of Using Software Update via the Terminal

Now that you know how to run the Mac Software Update from the Terminal, the likely question is  why you’d want to use this method instead of simply clicking a few buttons in the Mac App Store. One big reason is automation and remote management. Users with multiple Macs to manage can create scripts or remotely initiate a software update via a method such as SSH without needing to manually use screen sharing or remote management software. Another potential benefit is speed. While not universal, many users report that updates install faster when installed via Terminal, both in terms of the initial installation as well as the post-restart portion as the Mac reboots. While not every update will see a significant speed increase, the Terminal method at least won’t add any time compared to the Mac App Store.

The One Big Downside of Using Software Update via the Terminal

Despite its benefits for many users, there’s one big caveat of running the Mac Software Update via the Terminal. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the Terminal method only works with macOS system updates and first party Apple apps like iTunes. This is compared to the Mac App Store, which will update your third party apps alongside the official Apple updates. Longtime Mac users may recognize this limitation is the same as the original Mac Software Update utility. This utility, which is how Apple delivered system and first party updates to users prior to the launch of the Mac App Store, did not support third party applications. Since the softwareupdate UNIX command also served as the basis of the original Software Update utility, this limitation makes sense. So, if you only want to quickly install macOS system and first party updates, or if you don’t use any third party apps from the Mac App Store, the Terminal method has you covered. If not, you may be better off sticking with the default Mac App Store method as it keeps both your first and third party app updates all in one place.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 193 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview Feature

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

Dubai Begins Construction Of 'World's Largest' Airport Terminal

Dubai announced on Sunday that work had begun on a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, which the Gulf emirate's ruler said will become "the world's largest" at a cost of almost $35 billion.

"We approved the designs for the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, and (are) commencing construction of the building at a cost of AED 128 billion ($34.85 billion)," Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, said on X.

Once fully operational, the airport will "handle a passenger capacity of 260 million annually", the government said in a statement.

Sheikh Mohammed said it will have "the world's largest capacity" and be "five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport", which is one of the world's busiest air hubs.

According to Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and CEO of flag carrier Emirates, "the first phase of the project will be ready within a period of 10 years, with a capacity to accommodate 150 million passengers annually."

Built on the city's outskirts, Al Maktoum airport has received a relatively small share of the Gulf financial hub's air traffic since 2010.

Authorities want it to replace Dubai International Airport, which has a capacity of up to 120 million passengers annually and whose city-centre location prevents expansion.

Clean up begins after tornadoes hammer parts of Iowa and Nebraska; further storms expected Saturday

Updated on: April 27, 2024 / 6:17 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Residents began sifting through the rubble Saturday after a tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, demolishing homes and businesses as it moved for miles through farmland and into subdivisions, then slamming an Iowa town.

The Friday night tornadoes wreaked havoc in the Midwest, causing a building to collapse with dozens of people inside and destroying and damaging hundreds of homes.

There have been several injuries but no fatalities reported.

By Saturday morning, the sounds of chainsaws filled the air in the Elkhorn neighborhood of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people with a metropolitan area population of about 1 million. Lumber from the damaged homes lay in piles. Fences were knocked over and the trees were skeletal, missing most of their branches.

Power outages peaked at 10,000, but had dropped to 4,300 by morning.

"We watched it touch down about 200 yards over there," Elkhorn resident Pat Woods told CBS News. "And then we went to get shelter and we came, but we could hear it going through. When we came back up, our fence was gone and we looked over to the northwest and the whole neighborhood is gone."

Severe Weather Midwest

Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said Saturday that the fire department had completed its search of damaged homes and structures. He described the injuries as minor.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen posted on the social media platform X that he had ordered state resources to be made available to help. He and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds planned to tour damaged areas. And Pillen planned a news conference later Saturday in Omaha.

The National Weather Service was still evaluating the number and strength of the twisters.

One of them hit an industrial building to the west of Omaha, in Nebraska's Lancaster County, causing it to collapse with 70 people inside. Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

Sheriff's officials there also said they had reports of a tipped-over train near Waverly, Nebraska.

Another tornado passed over the eastern edge of Omaha, directly through parts of Eppley Airfield, the city's airport. The passenger terminal was not hit, but officials halted aircraft operations to assess damage before reopening the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said.

Severe Weather Midwest

After hitting the airport, the storm moved into Iowa, taking aim at the small town of Minden.

Forty to 50 homes were completely destroyed. Two injuries were reported but none were life-threatening, said Jeff Theulen, chief deputy of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office, at a late Friday briefing.

"It's heartbreaking to see these people who have lost houses, cars, essentially their life until they have to rebuild it," he said, urging people to stay away because of downed power lines.

At the Minden United Church of Christ, which survived the storm and has become a community hub of help and support, there were plans to take 4-wheel-drive vehicles out to devastated parts of town to bring meals to those who need them, Pastor Eric Biehl said.

"A lot of people are just kind of in shock," Biehl said. "It's all overwhelming now."

Tammy Pavich, who stores equipment on the west edge of town, said she "kind of breathed a sigh of relief" after the first round of tornadoes moved through Omaha. Then, she recalled, the storm "hit Minden dead-on."

APTOPIX Severe Weather Midwest

Todd Lehan, a lifelong resident of the town, said he took shelter in a windowless basement.

"It sounded like a vacuum cleaner on top of your house," he recalled.

Even as the National Weather Service worked to evaluate the damage, the forecast for Saturday was ominous. It issued tornado watches early Saturday for northwestern Texas and across western Oklahoma. The National Weather Service in Wichita issued a warning on Saturday for a large and dangerous tornado heading toward Howard, Kansas. Video posted on social media appeared to show a tornado touching down in Oklahoma.

Tens of millions of Americans remain under the threat of severe storms . A system bringing powerful thunderstorms, hail, damaging wind gusts and possible tornadoes is sweeping across the South and Central regions of the country, while Iowa and Missouri remain under threat for strong tornadoes.
