Villa La Gaeta San Siro Like

Villa la gaeta and james bond.

James Bond has been here too. Among the films that used San Siro as a location, the most important is without doubt “Casino Royale" by Martin Campbell (2006). In his first mission as “007" Daniel Craig discovers that the baddle in the film, Mr White (Jesper Christensen), is staying on Lake Como and confronts him there in the final, decisive duel. Mr White’s hideaway is Villa La Gaeta, wich was built in 1921 for the Ambrosoli family of industrialists on a promontory that stretches out into the lake and from wich it takes its name. Bond surprises Mr White when he gets out of the car to enter his villa. He wounds his leg with a pistol shot and while his adversary is trying to drag himself to the door, 007 waits for him at the top of the speps, where he introduces himself with his famous catchphrase: “ My name is Bond, James Bond".

Villa La Gaeta

Villa La Gaeta owes its name to the tip of the promontory on which it was built. Previously, the site was occupied by another, much more modest dwelling, acquired by Solone Ambrosoli, an Italian numismatic who lived between 1851 and 1906. The design of the building was assigned to Gino Coppedè and his brother Adolfo. It was completed by the heirs of the Ambrosoli in 1921. In 1940, the Villa was purchased by the Counts Gerli. After the recent renovation of 2011, the Villa has been divided into several apartments for private use. In 2006, the Villa was used as a location for filming some scenes of the movie Casino Royale.

Located in the town of San Siro on the north western part of Lake Como, Villa La Gaeta occupies an entire promontory. Designed by architects  Gino and Adolfo Coppedè  and completed in the early 1920’s, the Art Nouveau architecture with Liberty elements intertwines with a strong stone structure.

" The home is located over three levels. The terrace with alfresco dining and lounging offers ample space and privacy to soak up the atmosphere and splendid vista. Inside the home you will find a state-of-the-art kitchen with all mod cons and all the facilities you would associate from a home of this quality including interior dining facilities and a spacious, comfy sofa to relax upon. Two of the bedrooms are located on this floor as well as an additional service W.C. A laundry room with washer and dryer is conveniently housed on this floor. The spacious master double bedroom features an en-suite bathroom with shower and wc a plus sofa bed with two single beds with access to the lake terrace. A second double room with a private lake view terrace is also located on the entry level floor with bath, shower and wc. Stairs to the first floor give access to an additional living room, ideal for families or friends sharing the home who require additional privacy. The third floor is accessed by an internal staircase and takes you to the attic atrium level featuring an open plan layout of two single beds plus a sofa with access to a further bathroom with shower and wc. Outside you have access to boat mooring, use of the communal gardens and grounds plus parking area directly outside the home as well as the beach for sunbathing and direct access to the lake! At the end of “Casino Royale”, Bond says his signature line for the first time – at beautiful Villa La Gaeta. The luxury lake house isn’t easy to access. But there are a few tricks.

Why Bond was here After James Bond (Daniel Craig) won a poker game in Montenegro to bring down villain Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), his beloved Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) betrays him and gets away with the money. She got extorted, sacrifices herself for Bond and leaves him a single clue: a contact to mysterious Mr. White (Jesper Christensen). Bond finds White at the luxury home Villa la Gaeta at Lago di Como in northern Italy. He shoots him in the leg and introduces himself for the first time in the Craig era with the iconic sentence:  “Bond. James Bond”.

How you gonna get there Villa la Gaeta is an old lake house at the western shore of Lago di Como, situated along the coastal road from Menaggio up north towards Acquaseria. A car ride from Como is roughly an hour, local autobus C10 goes several times a day from Como up to Villa la Gaeta as well. Closest airport is down in Milano, about a two hour drive away. The problem is: Villa la Gaeta is privately owned and driving by will most of the times get you to a closed gate only. There are two ways to get a better look at the villa though. A really expense one and a budget, yet dolce vita, solution.

Good to know Though a private villa, it can be booked for accommodation. There are four bedrooms with room for eight people in total. But it’s not cheap: The whole Villa la Gaeta can be rented for roughly 2000 Euros per night. And you have to take it for a full week as minimum stay. Find offers via vrbo.com or airbnb.com . There is a slightly cheaper option via TripAdvisor : The site offers to book just one room for 250 Euros per night and a minimum stay for five nights.

Entering Villa la Gaeta

But there is a second way to get a good look at the iconic villa without spending a months salary. Villa la Gaeta is famed for its beautiful view at Lago di Como. The same goes vice versa: You can rent a motorboat and just cruise over to the estate to get a good look. We recommend coming to Menaggio. The beautiful coastal village is situated in the adjoining bay to the villa. A boat ride takes just about five minutes. There are some operators who offer boat rentals with or without a driver at the Menaggio harbor, we believe Nautic Planet has the best deals . You can rent a motorboat for an hour starting from 80 Euros including gas. The time will be enough to get to Villa la Gaeta as well as steering your boat all the way to another famous Bond location: Villa del Balbianello!

Lake Como: A Trio of Must-See Villas

I've realized that George Clooney and I have at least one thing in common: our love of Lake Como and the villas that surround it. A recent 3-day visit to Lake Como was all I needed to crave regular visits for many years to come. I’m currently eyeing a Summer 2018 return.

The region's surrounding mountains, gorgeous deep-blue lake, and its quaint cities will remind you of a fairytale land with pink hues and palm trees. And, for those Game of Thrones fans, you'll picture a walk through Dorne.

A fairytale land would not be complete without royal families and their oversized mansions. There are a dozen or so villas that surround Lake Como, each of them with its own unique backstory and design philosophy. During my quick trip to Lake Como, I had the pleasure of getting up close with these three must-see villas.

Villa Carlotta

In 1843, Princess Marianne of Nassau, wife of the late King Albert of Prussia, purchased this 17th century villa as a wedding gift for her daughter Carlotta, hence the name Villa Carlotta. Located on the West side of Lake Como, Villa Carlotta boasts 3 stories spread across 20 acres. Once inside, you'll be amazed by the stately designed and expertly curated art collection. The 3rd floor ceiling design is simply breathtaking.

What's more beautiful than the building itself is the massive wraparound garden terrace that surrounds it. In full bloom, the botanical garden makes up over 6,000 individual species of plants, roses, shrubs, and trees.

To visit Villa Carlotta, you'll want to take a ferry from any of Lake Como's primary cities (Varenna, Como, Bellagio, among many) and head for the Tremezzo - Villa Carlotta stop. It's very simple, however please note, this stop has fewer lines of service with the last ferry departing in the early evening.

Please expect to pay a small entrance fee.

Villa Melzi

Belonging to the late Franceso Melzi d'Eril, a high ranking dignitary in the Italian government, Villa Melzi is perhaps my favorite of Lake Como's fabulous villas. Here you'll find a 4-story pristine white and perfectly symmetrical 18th Century villa designed by architect Giocondo Albertolli along Lake Como's prime waterfronts.

The gardens of Villa Melzi, designed by architect Luigi Canonica and by botanist Luigi Villoresi, is famous for its English styled gardens, enriched sculptures, and the diverse foliage. As you walk through the garden's quaint pathways, you'll perhaps spot a cluster of Japanese maples, American redwoods, rhododendrons or azaleas.

To reach Villa Melzi requires a ferry ride into Bellagio , one of Lake Como's more popular stops. Ferries in and out of Bellagio run round the clock and more frequently than compared to Tremezzo - Villa Carlotta . Villa Melzi is a short 15 minute walk south along the waterfront from the dock.

Villa La Gaeta

Villa La Gaeta is one of Lake Como's newer lakeside villas - and, by new, I mean 100 years old. What you'll hear most frequently from Lake Como residents is this 1920's imperial style villa made a cameo in the 2006 James Bond 007 Casino Royale movie. The other fun fact is you can Airbnb one of the units for just $293 per night .

While I didn't explore Villa La Gaeta by foot, I did admire the building's bizarre medieval style from a private boat, enjoying its usage of brown stones adding to its already eclectic style. Planned by Adolfo and Gino Coppedè and completed in 1921, Villa La Gaeta is shaped like a medieval, renaissance castle with inserted motifs of the liberty period. It is structured around two towers, one of which is on a deep cliff over the lake, the other facing the hills. In 1940, the villa became the property of Counts Gerli.

I will certainly be adding a visit to Villa La Gaeta on my next trip to Lake Como.

About San Siro and Menaggio

San Siro is the larger of the two towns and is home to a number of historical landmarks and attractions. Located right on the border of Italy and Switzerland in Lombardy, this city is the largest of the many villages bordering Lake Como. Some localities, more than others, earn a place in our collective subconscious, becoming the emblem of something memorable. In the case of Menaggio, this is particularly true: a concentration of beauty, a must-see town for anyone looking for the perfect entry in their travel journal.

How to get to Menaggio

Despite its picturesque and strategic location, Menaggio can be easily reached by public or private transportation, without sacrificing any comfort.

By train and bus

The point of departure is Milan: from the station of Milano Cadorna , catch the first train bound to the railway station of Como Lago (€4.80, don’t forget to validate your ticket using the yellow machines!). From there, cross the road and find the Stazione Autolinee , from which the majority of local buses depart. Look for the C10 bus , connecting Como to Menaggio for a fare of €2.40, and in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. 

A good alternative is to start the journey from the station of Milano Centrale : for the same price and in a slightly shorter time , the train to Chiasso will stop at Como S.Giovanni, and guess what? The bus line, ticket cost, and travel time are exactly the same you’d find at Stazione Autolinee. Find more info about trains and stations here .

By ferry boat

For those who consider traveling a pleasure, rather than just a way to reach the destination, here’s the perfect option. From the railway station of Como Lago, walk 200 meters and reach the town’s harbor (Imbarcadero). Catch a ferry boat for Bellagio , relax on the ship’s deck, and, in around 50 minutes , step onto the beautiful Menaggio’s lungolago . LCE Tip: all good things come in three.  Consider departing from Milano Centrale with the train to Varenna-Esino . Get off in Varenna and indulge in your wanderlust, visiting one of the most gorgeous villages in Lake Como. Catch a special ferry from Varenna to Menaggio, which allows the most seasoned explorers to cross Lake Como with their own private transportation. This option is warmly suggested also the other way around, and it represents the most popular day trips from Menaggio.

4 wheels, a road, and a pair of keys: that’s all it takes to feel the taste of freedom. From Milan, follow the freeway A8 – Varese/ A9 Como- Chiasso , merging into the E35 . Enjoy the 1-hour trip, exit at Como, and find the indications for Menaggio ( SS340 road , known as Via Regina ), running along the Lake and offering superb views. The SS40 crosses Menaggio after a further hour of drive. 

Things to do in Menaggio

A small village can be relaxing, but it won’t offer much to do. Nothing could be further from the truth! Menaggio hides some of the most soul-lifting things to do on Lake Como: lazy walks on its promenade and through the boutiques of the center, adventures in the most pristine wilderness, and exciting one or two-day trips to must-see natural and urban localities on Lake Como, one of Italy’s most shiny jewels . In short: what to do in Menaggio will only depend on the severity of your wanderlust.

Explore Menaggio’s center, the lake promenade, and the old town  

Failing to visit it would be a crime. Start from Piazza Garibaldi , overlooking the blue waters of Lake Como. Take a stroll along via Calvi, dotted with typical craftsmen’s boutiques able to satisfy the wildest Italian shopping dreams. Menaggio: history and fun facts

Menaggio is an Italian commune located on the western shore of Lake Como: it comprises the three fractions of Croce, Loveno, and Nobiallo.

The ruins spread around Menaggio and its fractions witness entire millennia of glorious history: the area was conquered by the unstoppable Romans around 196 B.C., who built the Via Regina (“Road of the Queen”).

Did you know? At Lake Como Experiences, we like to say that strolling around Italian cities is like walking on history: as a matter of fact,  in many localities of the Bel Paese, Roman roads are still used nowadays. This is the case of Via Regina, connecting Como with the upper villages of its lake and with the Alps. 

In the Middle Age, Menaggio was progressively transformed into a stronghold: its strategic position along Via Regina looked extremely appetizing for many local warlords.

During the Renaissance, Menaggio knew a period of constant territorial wars: the castle was destroyed, and the village was conquered and dominated by the Spaniards for around two centuries. It is just in the 19th century that Menaggio was given back to the newborn (and departed) Kingdom of Italy, progressively becoming the vacation resort it is today. 

Finally, in 1945, Menaggio was a shelter for the escape attempt of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. He hid in the local primary school for one night, before traveling up to Lake Como, where he was captured and killed by the Italian resistance (Partigiani).

The lake has been mentioned in countless works of literature. It has featured in numerous music videos. Soap operas and television series have had episodes filmed in the region. It was built in 1787 after a Franciscan monastery rising on a point over lake Como in the town of Lenno. It then belonged to many important families and personalities who each made improvements to this majestic piece of architecture and lush terraced gardens for which it is famous and from where you can enjoy unparalleled views.

The villa now belongs to FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano), a non-profit and private organization founded in 1975 to protect, maintain and enhance the artistic and natural Italian heritage by restoring and opening it to the public .
