History says Visakhapatnam was ruled by king Visakha Varma, who built a temple here in the name of Lord Visakha and hence the city was minted. It is said Visakhapatnam was once a part of the empire of Kalinga, where emperor Ashoka fought a fierce battle. Primarily an industrial city, it draws a large number of tourists throughout the year. It is fondly called as "Jewel on the Coromandel Coast."

"A gem of South India"
Visakhapatnam tourism.
Visakhapatnam, also commonly known as Vizag, is one of the oldest port cities in the country. Situated in the heart of Andhra Pradesh, Vizag was announced as the state capital of Andhra Pradesh on January 31, 2023. The city is known for its picturesque beaches and serene landscape, as well as a rich cultural past. The port of Visakhapatnam is renowned for being home to the oldest shipyard in all of India.
Located a short distance away from Visakhapatnam is Araku Valley, one of the prime attractions of Vizag. Situated at a lofty 910 metres above sea level, Araku Valley is a hill station replete with gushing waterfalls, crystal clear streams, lush green gardens and some challenging trekking trails. Vizag is dotted with many beaches along its coastline, with the most famous one being the Yarada Beach. One of the most stunning places to see in all of Visakhapatnam, Yarada beach is surrounded by majestic hills on three sides, and by the Bay of Bengal on the other side. One of the best things about Vizag’s beaches is that they are a lot cleaner and a lot less crowded than other famous beaches along the Indian coastline, and Yarada beach is no exception. It is the perfect place to sit back on the golden sands and witness a marvellous sunrise or sunset. If you’re a history lover, the Borra Caves are one of the best tourist attractions that Vizag has to offer for you. Nestled amidst the Ananthagiri Hills in Araku Valley, the Borra Caves are over thousands of years old and are the biggest among all the caves found in India. Made entirely of natural karstic limestone, the caves are kaleidoscopic in nature, and the light falling on the rocks coupled with the waterfalls creates an extremely colourful effect, lending an aura of magic and mysticism to the entire ambience. The Katiki Waterfalls, situated a short distance away from the Borra Caves, is a gushing waterfall that measures around 50 feet in height and is completely surrounded by the lush greenery of the valley. The crystal-clear water cascading down the rocks, bordered by the gleaming green foliage is a sight for sore eyes. Being a coastal area, the primary cuisine of Visakhapatnam includes seafood, as well as traditional Andhra South Indian cuisine. While Visakhapatnam is not exactly renowned for being a shopping destination, you will still find a lot of things that you can take back home. You can purchase a wide variety of stuff starting from handicrafts to Kalamkari paintings to wooden toys to even gorgeous Pochampalli and Ikat sarees.

Known for its serene landscapes, and picturesque beaches, there are amazing places to visit in Vizag that add a great amount of significance to the city’s cultural heritage.

Arrival at Vizag
Start off your journey to Vizag and arrive by afternoon. Check in to your hotel and have a delicious meal.
Hotel to stay
- The Gateway Hotel Vizag – Situated in close proximity to the commercial district and tourist attractions, this hotel is the perfect choice for visiting all the places.
With a stunning view of RK Beach, this hotel in Visakhapatnam is a perfect seaside retreat to relax and unwind. We had a great stay at this hotel. The rooms are large and spacious with modern amenities. The bathroom is large and clean. The staff is courteous and very helpful. We booked a sea-facing room, which had a large window, facing the garden/swimming pool area and the sea. All the nearby attractions are at a walkable distance from this hotel. So it was a perfect place to stay if you are a tourist. There are 2/3 restaurants inside the hotel but I visited only one among them – Ming Garden. This restaurant offers Chinese cuisine and I have to say that I had the best Chinese food after a very long time. It was indeed a treat to my taste buds. If you are planning a visit to Vizag don’t forget to visit this place and enjoy your trip.

8 Things To Know Before Visiting Visakhapatnam
Flanked by the azure Bay of Bengal on one side and the rolling Eastern Ghats on the other, Visakhapatnam is a picturesque port city in Andhra Pradesh brimming with natural splendor. From pristine beaches dotted with ancient shrines to lush hilltops sheltering rare birds, Vizag packs in varied delights. As you plan your trip to uncover this city's fascinating mix of scenic coastline, rich history, culinary pleasures and cultural marvels; here's a comprehensive guide to make your explorations truly fruitful and memorable.
1.Glorious Seafronts With Diverse Charms
Vizag is blessed with a sparkling coastline spanning over 100 kilometers, treasured by locals and tourists alike for recreation, spiritual escapes or just soaking in captivating vistas.
The most popular and lively is RK Beach, famed as the jewel of Vizag seafronts. The vivacious beach transforms into a magical carnival at night with blaring music, neon-lit attractions and street stalls dishing out flavorful snacks to entertain crowds. To appreciate tranquility amid crashing waves, there's Bheemunipatnam Beach further north ringed with verdant hills where the Gosthani river meets the sea.
Rushikonda Beach is renowned as a hotspot for thrilling water sports from parasailing and jet skiing to surf lessons that adventure aficionados throng to try their hand at. For offbeat delights, there's Yarada Beach accessible after a ferry ride with dolphins frolicking just offshore and the Kalingapatnam Beach cherished for its crimson-hued waters at dawn.
- Vizag Beach boasts the unique submarine museum INS Kurusura showcasing India's naval warfare history
- The Three Kings Chapel near RK Beach bears testimony to ancient Portuguese vestiges
- Mangamaripeta Beach is unique for its extensive concrete seating and lively canteen
2.Submerged Temples & Ancient Sites
Thotlakonda impresses both nature lovers and history buffs with its breezy hilltop location overlooking the sea, scattered with remnants of stupas, chaitya halls, votive platforms and ruins that once comprised a magnificent hill monastery complex stretching across the region. Nearby Bavikonda and Pavurallakonda sites also unveil striking architectural vestiges like excavated panels, pillars and sculptures intricately embellished with tales from Buddha's previous births that lasted through medieval times before abandonment.
The 11th century Simhachalam Temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha built by historic Kalinga rulers combines both Odiya and Chola styles through its temple tower, stone lion statues and finely ornamented pillars even as newer walled enclosures, sabha mandapams and gopuram gateways came up later under Kakatiya patronage. The uniquesandbox architecture here signifies the temple foundations extend to the very sea coast below.
3.Popular Parks & Green Spaces
After temple trails, locals love escaping to Vizag's numerous gardens and parks speckled across the city which proffer open spaces to relax amidst natural splendor and recreational facilities for visitors of all ages.
Kailasagiri Park is a favourite hilltop park spread over 350 acres offering striking views of the coastline dotted with warships and vibrant cityscapes. One can spend hours ambling through lush gardens with jeweled walking trails or quirky attractions like a floral clock before stopping at the Titanic-themed visitors' gallery. Foodies gather at the on-site food court serving lip-smacking local snacks.
The INS Karasura Submarine Museum located along the RK Beach coast is a marquee attraction housing a decommissioned submarine from the Indian Navy. Venture inside to glimpse the cramped quarters and intricate machinery granting insights into submarine warfare and seafarer's lives. Don't miss the fascinating models, torpedoes and naval photographs exhibited onsite as well.
4.Indulgent Local Repasts
After sightseeing extravaganzas, allow your tastebuds to dive into Vizag's flavourful fares blending Andhra and seafood delicacies through the day:
Start early with hot gongura chutney dosas, fiery coconut chutney idlis and crisp murukkus with Irani chai/filter coffee. Lunch spreads comprise aromatic biryani variants and seafood curries like Chilli Chicken, Prawns Masala or Crab Pepper Fry scooped up with hot steamed rice and gunpowder pappadums on the side.
Evenings take on a festive aura with street stalls frying up scrumptious snacks like Mirchi Bajjis, Mixture, Mysore Bonda and Bandar Laddu sweetmeats. For after dinner dessert, try Ooty Appam with sweet jaggery and channa dal Payasam cooked with aromatic cardamom and saffron.
Popular eateries to sample these include Sea Inn Restaurant, Green Park Hotel and Visakha Vihar. Food blogger picks include Dosa Platter and Falahar for lip-smacking vegetarian thalis.
5.Tranquil Hillstation Getaways
Looking to escape the din and crowds of the city for verdant escapes? Vizag surroundings present some charming hill getaways just a short drive away for relaxed stays:
Araku Valley transport you into breathtaking landscapes dotted with tribal hamlets, extensive coffee plantations and rich orchids, especially vibrant around monsoons. The train ride to Araku itself is a delight with 58 tunnels and bridges letting you soak in Eastern Ghats rustic beauty at leisure.
Lambasingi earns fame as Andhra Pradesh's Kashmir with chill climate year-round sprinkled with tiny hamlets, strawberry farms and lush nomoi trees native to the region. Try local honey, jackets and pepper fries here.

The fact that the beauty of Visakhapatnam is serene and unparalleled is something that no one can deny. But being the residents of this stunning city and cocooned in midst of all this gorgeousness, it’s easy to forget how stunning the place really can be. Thankfully, we have Himanshu Chintalapudi’s drone video to remind us of that.
We recently came across his videos on YouTube titled Vizag by Drone (4K) and the second part of the same. Let’s just say that what we saw left our hearts overwhelmed and thankful to play witness to the magnificence of it all. Shot on a DJI Phantom 4 drone, the perfect composition of these familiar places will leave you awestruck.
Hovering his drone over everything from RK Beach, Kailasagiri and Submarine Museum to even the Port, Araku and Simhachalam, the videos are a testament to the astounding beauty that surrounds us.
Don’t believe us, think we’re exaggerating? Watch the videos to believe us!
