Local Farms and Farm Stands on the Sunshine Coast

Whether you’re picking up snacks on your road trip or simply want to support local food producers, farm stands are a great way to experience the bounty of the Sunshine Coast. Turn down virtually any side road and you’re bound to find a small, typically honour-system-only stand selling everything from fresh eggs to in-season fruits and vegetables.

Below, we’ve rounded up farms and farm stands where you can pick your own berries, interact with farm animals, meet local farmers, and of course, stock up on all things edible and tasty. You can also find many of these farms at  local farmers’ markets  in the region.

A view of the stalls and large event banner hanging near the entrance of the market.

While blackberry bushes run wild on the Sunshine Coast, u-pick berry farms are a great way to fill your basket with minimal scrapes and bushwacking involved. These farms also sell other berries—like strawberries and blueberries—not readily available on the side of the highway.

Coast Berry Company, Powell River

In the summer,  Coast Berry Company’s  fields are filled with juicy vine-ripened strawberries and plump, fragrant blueberries. There are roughly 25,000 everbearing strawberry plants that are planted each year and up to four kinds of blueberry varieties, including Duke, Bluecrop, Elliot, and Liberty. Not quite up for staining your hands blue (or red) while picking berries? You’ll also find an assortment of goods for sale, from homemade jam to local honey and even raw, cold pressed, and unpasteurized blueberry juice.

When: Seasonal in July and August; be sure to call ahead for operating hours. Where: 10084 Nassichuk Rd, Powell River, BC

Rusty Gate Berry Farm, Powell River

The  Rusty Gate Berry Farm  is a small, family-operated blueberry u-pick farm located in Powell River. Grab a pail and fill a bucket or two or order ahead for five- and ten-pound boxes. Even better? Stay on-site and feast on blueberries for days. Rusty Gate offers an agri-tourism experience, with tent sites available right in the orchard. (There’s also a self-contained RV site.)

When: Seasonal in July and August; be sure to call ahead for operating hours. Where: 2575 Maywood Road, Powell River, BC

Seasonal Farms

Summer is the peak operating season for most farms on the Sunshine Coast. But come fall, when the temperatures cool and the leaves start to turn, you might just find yourself in a pumpkin patch hunting for that prize jack-o-lantern and sipping on hot apple cider.

Shady Hazel Farm, Gibsons

Shady Hazel  is the de facto spot to nab a pumpkin in fall on the Sunshine Coast. Their pumpkin patch is open every weekend in October. They serve up fresh cinnamon-sugar dusted mini donuts by the dozen, along with coffee, tea, and hot apple cider. And each year, they seemingly add to the reverie with on-site activities for both kids and adults alike. Only visiting in summer? Keep an eye out for their long table supper series, which sees highly regarded chefs from Canada serving up incredible eats under twinkling lights and starry skies.

When: Open 10-4 every weekend in October. Check online for announcements of summer events, like their long table supper series. Where: 805 Payne Rd, Gibsons, BC V0N 1V7

Little Red Wagon Farm, Roberts Creek

Don’t miss  Little Red Wagon’s  annual pumpkin patch day. Each fall, this small-scale farm (which also sells fresh fruit and vegetables in the summer) hosts an afternoon of family fall fun. Sip on hot drinks or snack on popcorn as you wander fields of pumpkins looking for the one to take home.

When: Call ahead for operating hours in summer and check online for details of their annual pumpkin patch day. Where: 2025 Sunshine Coast Highway, Roberts Creek, BC V0N 2W6 Canada

Flower and Animal Farms

For the times when you want more than just to stock up on produce, head to these farms. You can pet farm animals like goats, ride horses, visit an urban flower farm, stay in a cob house, tour a greenhouse, or smell the intense fragrance of fields of lavender.

Ruby’s Run Urban Farms, Sechelt

This is not your typical farm experience. Located right in the heart of Sechelt,  Ruby’s Run  made creative use of urban space to grow the Sunshine Coast’s largest selection of gorgeous and brilliantly-coloured blooms. In summer, they also offer produce such as sweet strawberries and vine-ripened tomatoes, all grown within a five-minute walk from downtown.

When: Year-round; be sure to call ahead for operating hours. Where: Neptune Rd, Sechelt, BC V0N 3A0

A bucket full of colourful flowers.

Sunshine Coast Lavender Farm, Sechelt

It’s impossible to miss Sunshine Coast Lavender Farm : just smell the aromatic scent of lavender in the air. This farm’s fields of lavender make for a great photo backdrop, and you can take home small-batch lavender products made from scratch using fresh goat’s milk from their very own herd. You can find everything from hand and body lotions to soap and essential oils in the on-site farm shop.

When: Open May-August. Where: 6154 Segador Rd, Farm, Sechelt, BC V0N 3A5

Farm Ventures, Roberts Creek

The whole family can experience the magic of animals at  Farm Ventures  in Roberts Creek. There’s the official farm greeter, Tetley the teacup pig, a llama, peacocks, and goats. (In fact, there’s 16 varieties of farm animals to visit.) There are even trail rides through the lush Roberts Creek forest and of course, fresh produce to take home.

When: Year-round, although some seasonal closures happen. Where: 713 Sullivan Rd, Roberts Creek, BC V0N 2W6

Suntwist Acres, Madeira Park

Visiting the Madeira Park area? Stop by  Suntwist Acres , a small homestead where you can purchase farm-fresh goods and pet the friendly on-site goats (they also have pigs, ducks, bees, and turkeys). Before leaving, stop by the farm stand where they sell everything from fresh eggs and microgreens to kombucha and goat milk soaps.

When: Call ahead to visit. Where: 12625 Warnock Rd, Madeira Park, BC, V0N2H1

Rolling Earth Farm Retreat, Roberts Creek

Try out farm life for a week at  Rolling Earth Farm Retreat . Situated on a tranquil six acres, this small organic farm is home to a natural cob earthen home with a creekside bathhouse and outdoor kitchen. Learn the basics of permaculture, forage for plants and mushrooms with a guide, and get the skills you need to build your own cob villa. Farm fresh food is served everyday.

When: Book your stay online. Where: 12930 Day Rd, Roberts Creek, BC V0N 2W1

Hillside Coast Farms, Roberts Creek

Hillside Coast  is another farm that offers on-site accommodation. This sustainable micro-farm is home to chickens and Nigerian Dwarf Goats, the smallest dairy variety in the world. Each spring and summer, guests can see the arrival of new kids, while year-round, you can walk the idyllic grounds and eat farm fresh eggs every morning.

When: Book your stay online. Where: 1184 Hawthorn Rd, Roberts Creek, BC V0N 2W2

Food-Adjacent Farm Stands

Sure, fresh produce is great, but sometimes you need an immediate snack. These farm stands offer delicious baked goods, roadside meals, and even flights of beer.

Gibsons Heritage Farm

This charming  farm stand  occupies an enviable location next to The Shortcut, a roadside food truck serving up all-day breakfast, sandwiches and burgers. While there’s no on-site tables or chairs, you can take a seat at one of the rustic wooden benches in front of the farm and tuck into a homestyle lunch. Don’t forget to grab some fresh veg from the farm stand for later.

When: Farm stand is first-come, first-served and open year-round. For The Shortcut, call ahead for operating hours. Where: 13 Henry Rd, Gibsons, BC V0N 1V2

The O Farm, Halfmoon Bay

Tucked right off Redrooffs Road is  The O,  an organic vegetable farm stall selling local produce, flowers, and an ever-changing lineup of tasty treats and baked goods, courtesy of the baker behind Fawn’s Road Stand. On any given day you might find a seasonal galette, donuts or cinnamon buns, plus fruit shrubs, homemade chili oil, or hot sauce.

When: Year-round, although some seasonal closures happen. Note: the baked goods sell out fast, be sure to get there early. Where: 8070 Redrooffs Road, Halfmoon Bay, V0N 1Y1

Persephone Brewing Company, Gibsons

Persephone Brewing  is best known as the site of cold, delicious beer, but they also sell an array of fresh vegetables in the summer (look for what’s available in the taproom), plus it plays host to a weekly farmer’s market. You can easily spend an afternoon soaking up the sun, drinking beer on the grounds outside, or perusing what’s on offer at the market.

When: Produce is available seasonally; the farmer’s market takes place from May to September; check for current operating hours. Where: 1053 Stewart Rd., Gibsons, BC V0N 1V7

Farm Animal Rescue Open Day tours

Booking a tour on a Farm Animal Rescue Open Day is a great way to meet animals that have been rescued from the agriculture industry, hear their stories, and spend some time with our amazing residents.

*** BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL. ALL VISITORS MUST HAVE A VALID TICKET FOR EACH PERSON TO ENTER THE SANCTUARY ***

Here are the details for our Open Day tours!

•The farm is open from 10am to 2pm •Our Walking Safaris will depart the visitor area promptly at 10.30, 11.00, 12.30 and 1.00 and take around 90 minutes. Guests must be accompanied by a guide when visiting the animals. There are steep hills at the sanctuary and there is a significant amount of walking involved. •If you arrive between tour times you are welcome to wait in our visitor area where a Tofurky sausage sizzle and other goodies are available for purchase. •A suggested $5 donation applies •Children under 15 must be supervised at all times as animals are free-ranging •Visitors wishing to see the cattle and pigs are required to navigate a steep path.

What to bring with you •We suggest you bring sunscreen •a hat and water •We recommend that you wear long trousers. * Fully enclosed shoes are MANDATORY

Many of the sanctuary animals come from intensive farming and other cruel situations. You will be required to sign a liability waiver when you arrive at the sanctuary.

For the animals and volunteers Donations of fresh fruit and vegetables for the animals are welcome. We can only accept donations of apples, watermelons, bananas, grapes, strawberries, pumpkins, pears and carrots. Food donations will be placed in our food store and must not be fed to the animals by visitors. Donations of packaged frozen, refrigerated and shelf items for the sanctuary’s interns are also welcome. All donations for the interns must be vegan.

Merchandise will be available for purchase after the tour from our visitor centre.

Important Notes The sanctuary paddocks are hilly and there are rough paths. Visitors need to have at least an average level of fitness and good mobility to successfully complete the tour.

All ages are welcome to visit, and we offer tailored tour experiences for families with children. We understand that some of the animal rescue stories might be distressing, so we take special care to provide age-appropriate content.

Learn About Rescued Farm Animals

Farm Animal Rescue is a working farm, and a place of refuge for animals that have been freed from abusive situations and factory farms.

All our farm animal rescues receives the best of life time care. The farm is open to visitors on a regular basis, so that people can come to meet our residents.

Each visitor has the opportunity to rub a pigs belly, pat a sheep, tumble around with a goat, and feed a rooster.

During these animal contact sessions, we will tell you the story of each rescued animal and how they were rescued.  We will also share what life is like for the millions of other animals on factory farms that we cannot save.

Carol Slater Tour Guide

Private tours of Farm Animal Rescue

About the tour.

We offer a 90 minute private walking safari to visit the sanctuary animals with one of our experienced caregivers for those unable to make one of our Open Days or who prefer the special experience of visiting the animals independently of other visitors.

Please note that the sanctuary is located in hilly country and therefore many hills and tracks will be involved in your visit. The sanctuary animals are free-ranging and you may need to walk significant distances to reach them. Because the animals have free access to 55 acres of pasture and forest, we may not be able to locate every animal during every visit.

The sanctuary is always very busy with a large number of chronically ill animals because of poor treatment by the food industry. In extenuating circumstances we may need to cancel or shorten your visit and should this occur we will refund your safari fee.

What do I need to bring?

You should bring with you a water bottle, a hat, sunscreen, fully enclosed shoes and we strongly recommend long trousers. Some of the sanctuary residents are very large and have horns, so it is important that you immediately follow instructions given by our animal care staff for your own safety and children must be in the immediate presence of an adult at all times.

Tour conditions

We ask that you leave any food items in your vehicle so that you don't become a target for our more greedy residents, and please note that animal products are banned from sanctuary grounds at all times - out of respect for our residents. Pets of any description are not permitted on sanctuary grounds for health and safety reasons.

You will be required to sign a disclaimer upon entry to the sanctuary and it is essential that you locate one of our animal care staff before approaching any animal.

Booking and fee

You can book your visit online . Bookings are $195 for groups of between one and nine people.

You will receive an email confirmation of your booking arrangements.

Sunshine Coast Wildlife Parks & Zoos

The Sunshine Coast wildlife parks and zoos provide visitors with rich animal encounters and memories that will last you a lifetime.

They are the ultimate activity for families especially for those with young kids travelling around the region.

Sunshine Coast Wildlife Parks, Zoos & Farms, Tickets & Entry Passes, Qld

Australia Zoo should be on the top of your list because of its legendary founder, Croc Hunter Steve Irwin. It has long been one of the most famous attractions locally, and it’s hard to find any other zoo that’s more passionate about wildlife protection. There are dozens of fun activities and adventures to be had here such as the free Africa Safari Shuttle, where you can see zebras, giraffes, and rhinos. Other highlights include the Crocoseum, Tiger Temple, wildlife shows, and more.

The SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium is another favourite among the Sunshine Coast wildlife parks and zoos. Located in Mooloolaba , the aquarium houses thousands of marine animals including various shark species, stingrays, turtles, seals, tropical fish, and much more. The interactive touch pool display is a great activity for the kids, while the Seahorse Sanctuary lets you learn about these beautiful tiny creatures.

The Maleny Botanic Gardens is a relaxing park that encompasses over 110 acres. With lush rainforests, lawns, and gardens to explore, it is a top family destination for nature lovers. The aviary on site is home to 300 different birds including parrots, cockatoos, macaws, and lorikeets. Be sure to book the guided tours to make the most of your trip here.

The Barnacles Dolphin Centre in Tin Can Bay is one of the few places in Australia where you can meet and even feed humpback dolphins. For a truly priceless experience, join one of the volunteers as they join the dolphins in the water. Afterwards, have a sumptuous meal at the Barnacles Café.

These and more await you when you explore the many Sunshine Coast wildlife parks and zoos.

Smith House at The Falls Farm

As the oldest house in Mapleton, there’s no better spot to sit back and soak up the scenery than the open air balcony at Smith House at The Falls Farm. Watch the sun slip away and cast your gaze over the tumbling wisteria chains planted across this picturesque property – glass of local wine in hand of course. Sitting on the highest ridge, this enchanting farm stay overlooks the Obi Obi Valley—a rich tapestry of colours bearing vibrant wildflowers, towering hoop pines and flooded gum. When you’re not admiring nature’s best, you’ll want to explore the produce bounty at The Falls Farm itself, a glorious oasis of regenerative farming riddled with fresh, seasonal harvests and some of the best jams, preserves, pickles, dips and chutneys in the business. Our tip: book a table at the nearby Mapleton Public House for a true paddock to plate experience.

From chilies that spice up your palate to cacao that enchants your taste buds, Mayan Farm is any food lover’s delight. At the helm of this working estate, you’ll find chef Jodie Williams and her partner, Brett Gowley—both bona fide Noosa Shire locals with a knack for constructing luxury and sustainable getaways. Despite clocking in as a working farm, Mayan is a stomping ground for extravagant villas made with rammed earth. Expect to cocoon yourself in bubbles thanks to the open-air bathtubs, descend into plunge pools that serve their own slice of natural paradise at sunset and even treat yourself to in-house catering with breakfast hampers and delicious rustic pizzas.

Our beautiful farm is based in Elimbah QLD, when our animals are not attending your special event, they enjoy roaming freely around the farm, grazing on fresh grass, resting under a shady tree or running around in the sunshine.

All of our animals live in harmony together, it’s beautiful to see and we love them very much.

Whilst we always have adorable baby animals, we also have amazing adults! We believe this is an important and educational feature of our farm as children are able to see animals grow up just like they do.

We are especially passionate about helping children overcome their initial reservations or fears of the animals, should this arise we will spend the time to ensure they have an enjoyable and positive experience.

We can’t wait for you to meet our Amazing Animals!

17 Of The Best Sunshine Coast Farm Stays For A Country Escape

By Urban List Writers

11th Mar 2024

visit farm animals sunshine coast

The Sunshine Coast has more than its share of beautiful farm stays to get you back to nature and help you find that zen place you lost in the city somewhere. We’re not talking about pitching a swag by the side of a paddock; we’re talking about sweet mountain cabins and heritage cattle farms with space to roam free and experience a taste of farm life.

Ready to give country living a (albeit temporary) shot? Get back to nature and scroll on for 17 of the best farms you can stay at around the Sunshine Coast.

Mayan Farm

342 sister tree creek road, kin kin 4571.

mayan farm

If you want the farm vibes but not the rustic accommodations, Mayan Farm is the spot for you. Sitting on more than 100 acres in the Noosa hinterland, the farm is home to cattle, horses, ducks and sheep, but it also now hosts those with only two legs, thanks to a luxe rammed earth villa on the property.

Our top pick for a Sunshine Coast farm stay boasts an alfresco deck, pizza oven and a plunge pool (just to name a few of the seriously lxue amenities), all overlooking the wide open farmland and countryside views. The villas sleep up to eight, so split the bill and take your whole crew. Book here .

Sixty6 Acres

Walden road, woombye qld 4559.

sixty6acres woombye

Sixty6 Acres is all about paying homage to the Sunshine Coast's rich agricultural history. Located just 15 minutes from the iconic  Big Pineapple , the refurbished farmstead grows, appropriately, pineapples, but also sugar cane, grapes for their micro-winery, coffee, mangoes and a host of other crops. For guests, they have luxe, self-contained quarters that feature wood burning fireplaces, freestanding baths and full kitchens.

The jewel in their crown, The Acreage is a newly-opened three-bedroom country cottage with a wraparound verandah, fireplace, firepit and outdoor bathhouse. The exclusive outdoor bath house is decked out with an original claw foot tub, copper rainwater shower and views to horses, lake and beyond. The land boasts large forested areas and platypus-inhabited creeks to explore as well as stables stocked with a menagerie of friendly farm animals you can hang out with. Perfect for a family getaway or for a more romantic option, the farm has a putting green, kayaks for the lake and fire pits at all the cabins.  Book here .

Wittacork Dairy Cottages

286 tesch rd, witta qld 4552.

an outdoor bath on a farm stay

Set on over 700 acres of pure Queensland rainforest, Wittacork is, to this day, a working dairy farm and is listed as a Land for Wildlife registered property, making it a haven for native fauna. Spend a couple of days here and you'll certainly feel as though you've gotten back to nature.

Watch the farm's cows being milked, or hang on the banks of Lake Baroon (if you stay a night or two make sure to watch the sunset across the lake from your self-contained cottage). With kilometres of walking tracks and Obi Obi Gorge National Park to explore, Wittacork is the perfect farm homestay. Book here .

Branell Homestead

12 paroz rd, laidley qld 4341.

Located just outside Laidley, in the stunning Lockyer Valley area, Branell Homestead is your classic country bed and breakfast with an oh-so-luxurious twist. With a range of accommodation options on offer—such as a rustic, cosy homestead or your very own suite in a luxury cabin overlooking the rolling green hills of the property—Branell is the perfect home away from home if you’re down with the country life but aren’t too keen on getting hands on with animals.

The 80-acre property features a private lake, complete with a jetty for fishing and a deck practically made for wine and nibbles as you watch the sunset. Branell Homestead has made a name for itself as a truly stunning wedding location, and if that doesn’t emphasise just how gorgeous it is, we don’t know what will. Book here .

The Cottage Of Conondale Station

a top Sunshine Coast airbnb

Lovers of farm life, welcome to Conondale Station , a blissfully small but modern farmhouse cottage within one of the Sunshine Coast’s largest working cattle farms; 930-hectares to be precise. Praising minimalistic design in support of lush valley views, Conondale Station provides the perfect getaway solution with its use of natural linens, recycled timbers, cotton and wool rugs, Mukti bathroom supplies, and a fireplace for chilly nights.

Rise, shine and inhale the fresh country air as you enjoy complimentary breakfast provisions of freshly-baked bread, milk, farm eggs and locally-sourced Montville coffee. We know what you’re thinking, and to confirm; yes, Conondale Station is as impressive as it sounds. Book here .

Mango Hill Farm

Another restored cottage, this  Mango Hill retreat  offers two bedrooms and lots of opportunities for exploring. Located in Peachester there are views of the Glasshouse Mountains area and Mt Beerwah. If you head down to the forest walk near the creek you’ll most likely make some new friends with the hinterland creatures living in the area, from kookaburras to water dragons and finches.

The owners rescue and look after goats, alpacas, sheep and miniature horses so you’ll have the opportunity to hang out with their furry friends and really test out if farm life is for you. We’d just like to add that it also has a rotunda in the garden, and we can’t stop daydreaming about the tea parties that could be held in that space. Book here .

Killara Farm

Surrounded by rolling paddocks and the soft sounds of a babbling creek, Killara Farm is the perfect spot to bring the whole family—or a select few—to enjoy this gorgeous farm stay property. Killara, meaning always there, is serving up a beautifully modern 1890s homestead complete with rustic timber floors, wide four-sided verandah and whiskey room.

Relax by the pool, take a long stroll down by the creek or simply enjoy everything this beautiful property has to offer as you sip a glass of wine and watch the sun go down. If the need to explore is on the to-do list, take a short drive to Mothar Mountain Rock Pools, the Amama walking track, Dingo Creek Winery or the Noosa Hinterland Brewing Co , to name a few. Oh, and did we mention their rustic-chic cabins can fit up to five people?
