What is the cooling system?

A vehicle uses coolant to keep the engine from overheating. It flows through passages in the engine and disperses the heat. This keeps the temperature of the engine in a specific range.

There are many parts of the cooling system, including the radiator and thermostat, that have coolant flowing through it.

What is a coolant leak?

If a part of the cooling system becomes weak, coolant can leak out.

O-rings and gaskets are the most common issues with coolant leaks, but components of the cooling system can also become cracked and leak.

Why is my Dodge Journey leaking coolant?

Dodge Journey and the 3.6-liter engines have issues with leaks coming from the oil cooler/oil filter housing .

The oil cooler/oil filter housing is part of the cooling system and has coolant flowing through it.

2013 dodge journey coolant leak under car

The oil cooler/oil filter housing is designed to cool the engine oil to a certain temperature. It does this by dispersing heat throughout the oil cooler.

A common symptom of this leak is coolant running down the back of the engine onto the transmission.

Here is a link to the oil cooler/ oil filter housing. Before ordering, make sure it is the correct one for your Dodge Journey.

What can happen if I lose coolant?

Here is a list of things that can happen if you lose all of your coolant.

You will lose heat inside your vehicle

A “low coolant” message may pop-up

Your vehicle will overheat

Where is the oil cooler/oil filter housing located?

The oil cooler/oil filter housing is located in the “V” of the 3.6-liter engine. It is below the lower intake manifold.

Oil filter housing on a Dodge Journey

How do I stop my Dodge Journey from leaking coolant?

The only way to truly solve this coolant leak is to replace the oil cooler/oil filter housing .

Can you still drive with a coolant leak?

Driving with little to no coolant is bad for the engine.

The reason is that the coolant keeps the engine from overheating.

If an engine overheats, it can potentially be destroyed.

Dodge Journey Overheating While Idle: Causes + Fix

There are a few reasons why your Dodge Journey would be overheating when idling.  The most common ones include a bad thermostat, water pump, electric fans, and low coolant level.  This guide is intended to help you find the cause of this overheating in the most efficient way possible.  So, let’s start with what’s easy and take it from there.

If your Journey is running and driving fine, but you end up stopped somewhere and it begins overheating when idling, this guide is for you.  If it’s overheating at all engine speeds, check out  Dodge Journey Overheating .

Idle Overheat Dodge Journey

Make sure to inspect and work on the engine when it is cold.  Electric fans can kick on at any time.

Journey:  Overheating When Idling Causes and Solutions

1. low coolant.

While it seems counter intuitive, when your Journey is low on coolant may run ok with wind hitting the radiator, but when idling there’s just not enough coolant to properly cool the engine.

Solution :  Fill the radiator and coolant reservoir back up.  Never do this when the engine is warm.  The cold engine coolant can “shock” the block and cause a crack or even a freeze plug to drop out.

Filling it back up is not the fix.  The coolant had to leak from somewhere.  Look under the vehicle when it is parked and see if you can see puddles of coolant.  If there are, start directly above those puddles in your search.

Dodge Journey Overheating When Idle

A coolant leak is usually caused by:

  • Cracked Hoses –  There are two hoses that come and go to your Journey’s radiator.  One sends the hot coolant back from the engine to the radiator to be cooled.  And the other one sends the coolant back to the water pump to cool the engine.  These hoses can crack with age.  Take a look at them and see if they have been leaking.  Even if they are dry, they should still have a chalky look to them where they have been leaking coolant (it’s mineral deposits).
  • Radiator Leak – Take a look at the radiator itself.  Determining if there is a leak is going to depend a lot on whether or not you can easily see the radiator.  If it has a big gouge on one of the fins, or a streak going down it that looks like coolant has dripped from it, there’s your leak.  Here’s how to find coolant leak .
  • Water Pump – There are gaskets between the water pump and the engine block.  If one of these gaskets fail, then there’s going to be a leak.  This is often a hard one to see, because all of the accessories (alternator, power steering, serpentine belt) are going to obstruct your view.  This is often where the leak is coming from when there’s a puddle under the center of the engine bay and you don’t see a leak anywhere.  Here are the signs of a bad water pump  in the Dodge Journey.

2. Bad Electric Fan

2013 dodge journey coolant leak under car

If the coolant level appears to be fine, then the next easiest thing to look at is the fan.  Most vehicles use electric fans to cool the radiator when it gets warm enough.  These fans are most important when the vehicle is idling.  These fans can and do fail.

Solution :  With the engine hot and idling (but not yet overheating) pop the hood open and see if the fan is turning.  If it is not turning at all you know you have a bad fan.

Check the fuse and fan relay to see if they are getting power.  If they are, you’ll need to replace the fan.  Here’s a good guide to troubleshooting a radiator fan .

3. Bad Thermostat

Next on the list is the thermostat.  Your Journey’s thermostat controls when coolant does and doesn’t enter the engine.  It’ll either be on the block or water pump.

Solution :  It can be tough to tell if a thermostat is bad without just replacing it.  Does the vehicle get hot within a few minutes of driving (and the coolant is full)?  That could be enough to tell that the thermostat isn’t opening all the way.  It usually takes an engine a while to overheat when it is full of coolant.

You’ll need to replace it, which is about a 2/10 in mechanical difficulty.  Most likely you’ll just need a ratchet, extension, and 10mm socket.

Here’s more on this:   Dodge Journey: Bad Thermostat Diagnosis

4. Bad Water Pump

2013 dodge journey coolant leak under car

The water pump in your car is turned by the Journey’s engine accessory drive system.  As the engine rpm increases, so does the speed of the water pump.  When the vehicle is idle, the water pump is turning slowly.

Solution : A bad water pump isn’t efficient.  When the car is overheating when idling the water pump is not able to move the coolant through the radiator and back to the engine.  You can test this by putting the car in neutral or park and revving the engine to about 1000 RPM under the redline for a few seconds.  You should see the temperature dip as the water pump spools up.

Replacing a water pump is only as challenging as getting to it.  Which, depending on it’s location, can be relatively easy or a total nightmare.

Here’s more on diagnosing a bad water pump .

Honorable Mention: Temp Gauge

While your Journey’s temperature gauge is usually pretty reliable, it still is an electrical device that can fail.  A mechanic would check the temperature of the engine manually with a heat gun in order to ensure that the gauge was reading correctly before tackling the repair.

When the car is overheating when idling and you SMELL the smells associated with a temp that is too high, you can throw the temp gauge theory out.

Journey Overheating When Not Moving

Conclusion:  Dodge Journey Overheating When Idling

Hopefully, this guide to why your Journey may be overheating when idle helped you fix your vehicle.  If there is anything that you would like to add that could help the next person with theirs, your comment below is most welcome.

I have been having issues with my 09 Journey sxt 3.5L V6... It was overheating at one time seemed to have that under control NOW the coolant is leaving the resovoir but not leaking on the ground

CHANGED: Thermostat a few times, , radiator , water pump , (might as well have ) timing belt ,   radiator  cap.... the coolant seems to leave when the ac is has been used but every day the coolant has to be checked to make sure there is some in there.. Also its making a noise that's having me scratch my head cause she use to be on silent mode.... The noise almost sounds like a rattling coming from the passenger side. Any thought or suggestions? thanks

check under your carpet for coolant leak from the heater core .

So far no leaking under carpet. That was checked as well as a friend suggested that too. Thank you for replying.  I will continue to check that though.

;)

time to get a preasure test kit . pump it up and look for a leak . if you are loosing that much you should see It . pin hole leak in the radiator  and end caps

  • kikiplus3 and dhh3

I will try this... thank you

dhh3

Since you are adding coolant to the overflow tank, and it is not returning as it should; and, you mentioned overheating, you may have blown a head gasket.  The coolant will be burned in the combustion chamber, and go out the exhaust  pipe.  If this is what is happening, you will never see a leak.  I'd get a compression check on both cylinder heads.  You have 24 valves, but only SOHC.  Odd duck as most multi-valve engines are DOHC.  Depending on how bad the gasket is blown, you may notice a decrease in power.  Using the AC will make the engine work harder; therefore, more coolant will be lost through the head gasket.  Depending on where it is blown, and on what side of the cylinder head, this problem could remain "as is" or slowly get worse.

bigtsr

Do you see white smoke out the exhaust ?

Have an oil analysis done.

  • jkeaton and dhh3

no white smoke

Check your oil level.  Is it higher than normal?  How much coolant are you loosing each time you are checking it?  If it is a small amount, the exhaust  may not be white (steam)

Coolant Leaking Problems of Dodge Journey

Dodge Journey owners have reported 7 problems related to coolant leaking (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Dodge Journey based on all problems reported for the Journey.

1 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2015 Dodge Journey

Takata recall : urgent: overtime I've had electrical issues which effects not just the plug inserts inside the vehicle but also my alarm system foes not work and my horn just does not work anymore, air bag light that popped up on my dashboard which I feel maybe some wires might be detached but scares me that when I drive the air bag wont detect if I get into an accident, also I recently just had an issue with my engine cooling and started to smoke out of nowhere while on the freeway and ended up getting stuck for hours but even if I drive for a few seconds the gauge shoots to hot right away and and coolant started leaking everywhere. I have attached the 6 out of 10 recalls that did not get done. I brought my car into bud clary's of auburn in March of 2019 and had 4 recalls taken care of. I have advised that I still had 6 orhers that were reported back in 2015 that I never got done and wanted to take care of that as well. Was told that it does not show in the system and I would need to contact NHTSA for more details. Ive reached out to a few people who gave me the same information. 2 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2013 Dodge Journey

Coolant leakage while vehicle was in motion causing the vehicle to overheat. See all problems of the 2013 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

3 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

Coolant was low so it was filled with coolant. The reservoir was low again the very same day and the car was overheating (as well as the ac not working properly and blew hot air even when using cold) on the highway, barely making it to destination. The first diagnosis was an air vacuum caused a leak. The problem keeps reoccurring after the supposed fix. See all problems of the 2012 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

4 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2012 Dodge Journey

The 4 cylinder engine on my 2012 Dodge Journey developed an engine coolant leak. Trouble shooting found the leak to be related to deterioration of a plastic part inside the engine. . . Dodge part# 68003582. . . Adapter c. The car was standing when the problem was diagnosed. If I had not had the part replaced a catastrophic engine coolant leak could have occurred while the car was being driven, leading to a full loss of coolant, overheating of the engine and seizing of the engine. I talked with Dodge customer service and they acknowledged awareness of the problem. The car has 89,000 miles. I consider this to be a serious safety problem.

5 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

First our brakes were grinding and had to replace rotors and brakes, next the oil pan leaked, next full battery replacement and now overrated engine and coolant pouring out the bottom!!! no one will help us this car is a lemon and they should be recalled. I have to small children that depend on me having a car. Dodge should be ashamed!!!. See all problems of the 2010 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

6 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2010 Dodge Journey

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that coolant was leaking from what appeared to be a fracture on the side of the reservoir. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 48,000.

7 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2009 Dodge Journey

The vehicle keeps overheating. I've added coolant. There doesn't seem to be a leakage stain in the garage or driveway. It happened yesterday after leaving the office for lunch. I barely made it home before the Journey completely shut down. I allowed the engine to cool off, added coolant, and it wouldn't restart. I took a different car back to work and was able to start the Journey upon returning home. I let it sit overnight and it started right up this morning. However, upon driving 15 minutes during lunch today, it overheats again. The red warning light appeared and the ding sounded. The Journey coasted into my office parking spot where it will stay until I leave this evening. Hopefully, after adding more coolant, I'll at least be able to make it home. I will be trading this vehicle in ASAP! ps. The tire pressure light is always on, irregardless the proper amount of air in the tires. See all problems of the 2009 Dodge Journey 🔎 .

That's the thermostat and coolant crossover that you circled. You might just need to replace the thermostat, but many including myself continued to have a leak after that. There is an all metal coolant crossover sold by Dorman at all the major auto parts stores that should resolve that leak, but it requires removing the engine mount bracket on that side to do. Thermostat is just 2 bolts and a clamp.

Wait, just noticed your 2nd pic is of the transmission side. That's the oil cooler. Replace it with a newer model. They eliminate the filter tower inside the case and improve sealing of the cooler block. I found that ones sold for the Pacifica are the cheapest. This will change what oil filter you use, so make note of that.

2013 dodge journey coolant leak under car

Are you saying the oil cooler tower is Leaking... or to replace the heater hose connecting to it ? Thank You !

The oil cooler. Get the all metal one so you don't have to do it again. You'll need a cooler block, cap, and filter for a '14+. And it won't hurt to have a spare set of sensors for it in case you can't get your old ones out.

Not sure. It could be the plastic portion has a crack in it. Without seeing a damaged part you can't really pinpoint it. Since you're down that far, reattach the cooler block and get a pressure tester. Fill the coolant back up and pump the tester to the pressure listed on the cap (16psi), then look for the leak. Beware that if you have multiple leaks it will only leak out of the largest one unless they are all very tiny and about the same size.

Sounded like a plan so I tried that. It doesn't hold pressure and the leak fills up the "valley" before any water trickles out over the transmission area. Just can't find the source. VERY FRUSTRATING !

Dry everything up and slowly fill the system. Check every little bit to see if there's any puddles. Once you see something, look for traces of the drip in case it came from higher up. If it holds until pressure is applied, stop pumping when you hear the water sputtering and look for the spray/stream. And just to be sure, you are checking with the intake off so you can get a good look at everything, right?

Follow the steps in this video to see how to fix minor coolant (antifreeze) leaks in your 2010 Dodge Journey. Leaking coolant / antifreeze is one of the more common types of leaking fluid from Journey engines. Engine coolant (which is also called antifreeze or anti-freeze) moves through the inside of your Journey engine and keeps it from overheating. Coolant / antifreeze can leak from the reservoir, radiator or any hose, in 2010 Journey with the 3.5 liter engine. However, a coolant leak (aka an antifreeze leak) is most likely to occur where the hoses connect to the engine or radiator. Otherwise, your Journey may have a radiator leak. This video shows you where the coolant reservoir, hoses and connections on your 2010 Journey SXT are located and the steps needed to fix minor leaks.

A few things to note about coolant is that it is sweet tasting and highly toxic, so it can end up in the dog's stomach pretty quickly. If you ignore a small coolant leak long enough, you will run out of coolant, which leads to an overheated engine and other serious, but highly avoidable, problems. An anti-freeze leak can cause the temp sensor to record high engine temperatures in a 2010 Dodge Journey. Always protect yourself with safety glasses and gloves when working with the coolant on your Journey.
