Planning to travel with atrial fibrillation.

Take extra care when planning trips if you're living with AFib.

Atrial fibrillation — also called AFib — is a common heart rhythm disorder. If you have AFib , you may have some concerns about traveling with your condition. But taking a few steps to prepare may help you have an enjoyable and worry-free trip.

Before you travel, ask your health care provider any questions you have about traveling with AFib . Ask if there is anything you need to consider before and during your trip.

Travel tips with atrial fibrillation

Remember these helpful tips:

  • Bring your medicines. Bring all of the medications you'll need for your trip. Keep them in your carry-on luggage.
  • Carry a list of your medicines. Having a list of your medicines will make it easier to refill them if you run out of them or lose them.
  • Take your time. Get to the airport early to give yourself plenty of time before your plane is due to depart. Anxiety can sometimes trigger irregular heartbeats.
  • Bring your care provider's phone number. Write the number on a piece of paper. Also store the number in your phone when you travel.
  • Ask about a medical alert bracelet. Your provider may recommend that you wear a medical alert bracelet that has information about your condition on it.
  • Take steps to prevent blood clots. During your flight, stand and walk when you can to prevent blood clots in your legs. Your health care provider also may recommend that you wear compression stockings.
  • Find medical centers close to your travel destination. Before your trip begins, learn where the closest hospital or doctor's office is at your destination. Find out what services your health insurance will cover. This can help prepare you in case of an emergency.
  • Check the contact information for embassies. If you're traveling internationally, bring the address and contact information of the U.S. embassies or consulates in the countries where you'll be staying. They can help with medical care in the area and offer general advice.
  • Buy travel health insurance. Buy travel health insurance and medical evacuation insurance before your trip in case of an emergency while traveling overseas.
  • Watch for side effects of blood thinners. If you're taking warfarin (Jantoven), you'll need regular blood tests to monitor its effects. Check with your provider to see if you'll need blood tests while you're away. If you take other types of prescription blood thinners, continue to take the medicine as directed.
  • Ask about high altitudes. If you're going to visit a high-altitude location, such as the mountains, check with your provider first. High altitudes may worsen some irregular heart rhythms. Your care provider may suggest that you rest and lower your activity level for several days after arriving at a high altitude. Also, watch for any new or unusual symptoms of your condition or of altitude sickness.
  • Get recommended vaccines. Know which vaccines are required at your destination.

It's important to follow your atrial fibrillation treatment plan. If AFib isn't well controlled, it may lead to complications, including strokes and heart failure. With some planning, you can enjoy your travels and live an active life with atrial fibrillation.

Real Travel Insurance Help for Military Families

family sitting in airport waiting area

Because the orders always change, amiright?

There’s a bucket-list vacation you and your spouse want to take. You’ve been squirreling away money. You’ve got an “Amah-zing Vacation” board on Pinterest. You’ve been Googling, and planning and dreaming. Lots and lots of dreaming. Dreaming about that vacation is what’s getting you through allergy season and the end of the school year right now.

Or maybe that’s just me.

But you’re afraid to start buying plane tickets and booking hotels because you don’t want to lose your deposits, or worse — the full payments — if and when your spouse’s orders change and leave gets revoked. And if you don’t purchase soon, that incredible fare or deal you found will be as gone as that pint of Ben & Jerry’s you thought you’d carefully hidden in the back of the freezer.

Good news, fearful travelers! There are two ways to book that dream trip and still be protected, and one of them is probably not what you think.

First things first, the obvious one: Buy travel insurance.

But there’s a catch. Buying travel insurance is great advice — for civilian families. Travel insurance policies cover most of the things that could happen — to civilians — that would prevent them from being able to take dream trips.

“With my military family clients, I make it a point to reiterate that they make sure to read the fine print very carefully. Many travel insurance policies only allow military to cancel their trips if called to duty for a natural disaster, not a combat zone deployment or simple TDY or leave revocation,” Casey Coté told me. She’s a military spouse herself and a travel agent , so she knows exactly where we’re coming from with these fears.

I called a certain travel insurance company to ask about that leave-gets-revoked scenario. (I’m not going to name-check that company here because it turns out their policy is pretty standard and other companies impose the same limitations):

Me: Your policy says it covers military who have to cancel because they are called to war. How do you define “war”?

Representative: We cover it if they have to go to war or if they are called up to respond to a national disaster.

Me: Yes, but how do you define “war”?

Representative: What do you mean? We define it as “war."

Me: But what if my husband got sent to a place that isn’t officially a “war zone." Like, what if he got sent to Syria? We’re not technically at war there. Would that be covered? Or what about a humanitarian mission?

Representative: I have no idea. We would have to review that on a case-by-case basis after it happened.

Me: You mean after we’ve purchased this expensive trip and this expensive travel insurance policy, you would decide later if the insurance policy would actually cover us? That doesn’t really sound like insurance to me.

Representative: I’m sorry, Ma’am. I wish I had a better answer for you. We do cover illness and death in the family.

Me: Okay, so what about non-war orders? What if my husband doesn’t get sent anywhere to fight but something comes up and his orders are changed? Would that be covered?

Representative: Again, I really don’t know. We’d have to have a letter from the commander explaining the situation and then we’d consider it on a case-by-case basis.

Me: Again, that doesn’t really sound like insurance.

Coté says this case-by-case basis thing is really common with travel insurance companies.

“When you start peeling away the layers of jargon on these policies and ask in-depth questions, agents freeze up and have no clue what to tell you,” she said.

Coté also said that many travel insurance policies have a "cancel for work reasons" clause that should cover military duty — emphasis on the “should” — but sometimes doesn’t.

“I've run into some travel insurance companies who give me the runaround when I mention that scenario, because the word ‘military’ seems to change everything,” Coté said.

TravelGuard is the travel insurance company Coté said she most often recommends to both military and non-military clients. She said TravelGuard's “cancel for any reason” clause seems more cut and dry than most, the coverage limitations are clearly defined and the staff in the call center are typically able to answer coverage questions.

Section 2 of TravelGuard’s Gold Plan benefits explanation states that TravelGuard will reimburse the full cost of the trip if, among other things, “the Insured or Traveling Companion is called to active military service or military leave is revoked or reassigned.”

But even with that clearly spelled out, you can never be too careful, Coté said.

“As I recommend to all my clients, if you are unsure of any part of the policy or do not fully understand any of the certificate jargon, call the insurance company before purchasing your policy and sort those questions out, and be as specific as possible when describing your travel and military needs. Only they can shed light on specific terms as they relate to your travel needs. If you need to buy a more comprehensive plan to cover your needs, then do so. It may come at a higher cost, but that cost will likely outweigh the risk of traveling without having all possible travel snafus covered,” she said.

There’s one other option for travel coverage that you may not have thought of: Your credit card.

Useful for more than just running up debt and jimmying the lock when your toddler locks himself in his bedroom, your credit card might — emphasis on the “might” — offer you some travel protection.

I stumbled across this tidbit of information when planning a trip recently and called my credit card company to ask. No dice. Mine offered some travel protection, but not the kind that would cover our military concerns.

So I started digging and discovered Chase’s Sapphire card was mentioned on several travel websites as the best card to have when traveling, for a number of reasons.

There may be other cards that offer the same, similar or even better travel benefits, I’m certainly not saying Chase is the only one. Also, it’s worth noting that I’m specifically talking about the Chase Sapphire card. Other Chase cards do not feature the same travel protection.

Here’s why I like the Chase Sapphire card: The insurance on the Chase Sapphire card specifically covers any change in military orders. And they cover it for both the card holder and a traveling companion, not just an immediate family member. The Chase Sapphire card also covers multiple people in a family — so if the service member has to cancel, the entire family can recoup the costs. It covers cancellations and interruptions for other reasons, too. And, yes, I called Chase, spoke to several representatives, and confirmed all of this, right before I applied for the card.

The representatives did tell me that the amounts can change from cardholder to cardholder and that there’s a cap on the amount it will cover. For the card I got, that cap is $10,000 per person with a maximum of $20,000 for a family — which is more than enough to cover any trips we plan on taking.

In any case, before you buy travel insurance or make any big purchases on a credit card that offers travel protection, take 15 minutes to call to talk to the representatives, and then get them to email you the information they report so that you’ll have it in writing. Hopefully you’ll never need it, but you’ll sure be glad to have it if you do.

American Forces Travel Privileges Extended to Eligible Veterans

The Department of Defense announced today a policy change to the current shopping privileges on the American Forces Travel website. As directed by acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Virginia S. Penrod in a memo signed April 12, 2021, the department will extend online access to the website to honorably discharged veterans of the uniformed services.

On average, customers save 35-40% compared to commercial travel pricing by using AFT. This includes discounted rates on hotels (up to 60%), airfare, rental cars, vacation packages, event tickets, and cruises.

“Sixteen million veterans will now be able to access the American Forces Travel website, joining the 10 million active duty, Guard and reserve service members, family members, DOD civilians, and other patrons who are already receiving the benefit,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy Patricia “Patty” Montes Barron. “We are committed to providing quality-of-life programs to our military community, which includes our honorably discharged veterans.”

The change will not affect access for existing patrons, and the increased customer base will allow AFT to negotiate better prices for its customers.

AFT launched in 2019 as the only official joint service morale, welfare, and recreation leisure travel website exclusively for DOD patrons. In addition to improving access to DOD’s MWR benefits, every booking on American Forces Travel generates revenue to support critical quality-of-life programs for service members and families.

To access the exclusive military discount pricing on travel products, visit the American Forces Travel website . Proof of eligibility is required.

Atrial fibrillation is a long-term condition and you are probably already aware of most of the things you need to consider when travelling. You may however, be feeling nervous about taking a trip abroad, or unsure of what you think to think about while planning your trip.

As long as your condition is stable and well-managed, there should be nothing stopping you from enjoying a well-deserved break. However, there are a number of things to bear in mind to help you have a relaxing holiday.

It’s important that you don’t make plans to travel without the backing of your doctor. Speaking to them first should reassure you and help you arrange a safe and happy holiday.

  • Discuss your holiday plans with your doctor or heart specialist before booking.
  • Medical advice suggests not travelling to areas where you’ll experience extreme temperatures and high altitudes.
  • Pack more medication than you need, in case of delays and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Take your Travel Insurance documentation in your hand luggage for easy access to the details of your policy.

Travelling to and from your destination is the most stressful bit of any holiday, whether or not you have a pre-existing medical condition. Plan ahead with our atrial fibrillation travel tips for the journey:

  • Dehydration can trigger atrial fibrillation symptoms. Stay hydrated by regularly drinking water or other non-alcoholic liquids, especially in warmer climates.
  • You’re at higher risk of developing blood clots. Wear compression stockings on the flight, if advised by your doctor. Also be sure to stretch your legs during long journeys by walking around at regular intervals.
  • If you are travelling through different time zones, make sure you know when you need to take your medicines.
  • If you have an implant of pacemaker fitted, bear in mind that they can be affected by airport security machines. Tell airport staff in advance of passing through security and show them your device’s identification card.

Holidays are all about relaxing and trying new things. Talk to your doctor about any particular activities you plan to do in advance, and bear in mind that you might have to adjust your behaviour to keep yourself healthy while you’re abroad.

  • Changes to your diet can trigger symptoms, so sample new foods in moderation and try to stick to your usual diet and routine.
  • Keep active by making time for gentle physical activity each day. Don’t overexert yourself.
  • Keep a careful track of any changes to your usual symptoms. Be aware of chest pain and heart rhythms that feel different or go on longer than usual. Also note any symptoms of stroke, such as confusion or weakness.
  • Although it’s nice to be pampered, remember that it’s not advisable to use spa facilities such as saunas, and jacuzzis or steam rooms.
  • Make sure you get enough sleep, because being overtired can be another trigger for your symptoms.

We hope you’ve found our travelling with atrial fibrillation information useful!

Compare cover from as little as £8.71*.

Tommy Lloyd

Tommy has over 15 years experience within the insurance industry, and his primary focus is helping travellers find the right cover for their medical conditions.

Why do I need travel insurance for atrial fibrillation?

Standard travel insurance policies will normally include medical coverage, but it’s likely that this won’t extend to claims relating to pre-existing heart conditions like atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disturbance condition and affects 1 million people in the UK. With this condition sometimes requiring medical attention, it's important that you have a policy in place that will cover you for medical expenses, should you need to make a claim.

Most travel insurance providers will need to know if you have ever suffered from any heart-related health conditions, including atrial fibrillation and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, no matter how long ago it was.

Our service enables customers to compare specialist cover for pre-existing medical conditions across a range of leading providers. Click the link below to get started, and make sure you tell us about your diagnosed conditions so we can compare the most relevant quotes.

Specialist Medical Cover

We only work with providers who specialise in covering pre-existing conditions.

No discounts. No pressure. We’ll always show you the best prices from providers.

Medical screening for atrial fibrillation

Medical screening for atrial fibrillation refers to the questions you might be asked after you’ve declared the condition.

These questions are asked so that travel insurance providers can get more of an insight into your medical background and develop a better understanding of how you're living with atrial fibrillation.

This enables them to offer you the right type of cover. So, when you start comparing policies with us, you can be sure that they include everything you need.

Here is  a list of some questions you may be asked during the online screening:

  • How has your condition been treated? (e.g. pacemaker or medication)
  • How many unplanned hospital visits for your irregular heartbeat have you had in the last 12 months?
  • Do you have any further investigation or treatment planned?
  • Are you on medication to thin the blood?

What does atrial fibrillation travel insurance cover?

By declaring atrial fibrillation on your policy, you can rest assured that your cover will take into account your condition, and any impact it has on your trip. For example, if your condition flares up before your holiday, or whilst you are away.

While standard travel insurance varies from provider to provider, you’ll usually find that it will include the same type of things. Therefore, you should expect the following as a minimum for specialist medical travel insurance:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses and Repatriation - in the event that you end up in hospital, or need to be repatriated back to the UK.
  • Lost, Stolen or Damaged Personal Belongings - to also include atrial fibrillation treatments and medications (i.e. a pacemaker).
  • Cancellation and Curtailment - in the event of cancelling or cutting your trip short as a result of your condition.
  • Travel Delay - this won’t always be included, so check with your provider.
  • Personal Liability - if you cause accidental damage to another person or someone else’s property - cover is provided.

To get started, how about finding a few quotes that will suit you best?

Optional extras

Also, feel free to add any optional extras that you need - such as gadget cover, cruise cover or winter sports cover.

This may increase your premium, but it will also increase your peace of mind. It’s definitely something to consider when shopping around, especially if you have different types of holidays planned.

  • Gadget cover
  • Cruise cover
  • Winter sports cover

In many situations, travel insurance through the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card extends beyond the primary cardholder. Trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost luggage and baggage delay coverage includes immediate family members, even if they aren’t traveling with the primary cardholder. However, there are limits to how many people can be covered per trip.

Rental car benefits are only given to the primary cardholder, who Chase defines as the “person to whom a U.S. credit card has been issued and their name is embossed on the card.” But if you meet the qualification requirements, any authorized drivers are also included in the rental car coverage.

We’ve included a table of all the travel insurance benefits provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with further details about each benefit in the following sections.

Trip cancellation protection

If an event out of your control prevents you from departing for your vacation, trip cancellation benefits may help you recover some of your nonrefundable costs. When you pay for your trip using your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or using Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, the primary cardholder gets trip cancellation benefits up to $5,000 per trip or $10,000 per 12-month period. If multiple people are covered on the trip, the limit is $10,000 per trip or $20,000 per 12-month period.

» Learn more: Trip cancellation insurance: What you need to know

The trip cancellation benefit applies if a situation arises which prevents you from traveling on or before the departure date. Covered reasons include the accidental illness or injury to the traveler or a companion, severe weather that prevents a trip, or a change in military orders for the cardholder or their spouse or domestic partner.

Despite the name, trip cancellation doesn't mean cardholders can cancel their trip for any reason, or that all cancellations are covered. Travel arrangements canceled by a common carrier (like an airline or cruise line), tour operator or tour agency may not be covered, unless the cancellation is due to an organized strike or weather.

Trip cancellation also doesn't apply if you are in jail, have a reoccurrence of a pre-existing condition, or are “traveling or flying on any aircraft engaged in flight on a rocket-propelled or rocket launched aircraft.” Note, if the travel supplier cancels your trip but offers a credit or voucher for future travel, you will not be reimbursed by the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . If this scenario applies to you, you’ll need to decline the future travel credit to qualify for reimbursement under the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

If you’re concerned with traveling and your reason for cancellation doesn't fall into one of the covered reasons, consider Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance, which is an optional add-on that you can purchase with a comprehensive stand-alone travel insurance policy.

Trip interruption coverage

Trip interruption insurance kicks in after departure and protects your nonrefundable prepaid trip plans if an event during your trip results in an interruption. For example, if you’re injured a few days into your trip and need to return home, trip interruption benefits can help you get your money back on the unused portion of your hotel stay. Coverage provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card provides up to $5,000 per trip or $10,000 per 12-month period. If multiple people are covered, the limit is $10,000 per trip or $20,000 per 12-month period.

The benefit applies to any prepaid tour, trip or vacation charged to your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card at a destination greater than one mile from your primary residence and for a trip that doesn’t exceed 60 days. Covered situations include accidental injury or illness experienced by the traveler, their companion or an immediate family member, severe weather preventing a trip, finding a primary dwelling to be uninhabitable or a quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons.

» Learn more: Trip interruption insurance explained

Like the trip cancellation benefit, travelers can’t file a claim for common carrier-caused delays. In addition, traveling against a physician’s advice, to receive medical treatment, while on a waitlist for specific medical treatment or traveling with a pre-existing condition do not count as a trip interruption.

Trip delay protections

A delay can happen for any reason, from irregular operations to missing flight crews for aircraft. Depending on how long your flight is delayed, you could get reimbursed for your incidental costs, ranging from meals to a hotel room.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a trip delay benefit of up to $500 for each purchased ticket if you are delayed by 12 hours or require an overnight stay. The reimbursement can cover reasonable expenses, such as food, hotel rooms, toiletries and any medications you may need.

» Learn more: What you need to know about Chase's trip delay insurance

However, if the delay was made public before departing, you may not be covered by this benefit. Prepaid expenses are not covered under trip delay but could be covered under the trip interruption benefit.

Baggage delay reimbursement

The last thing any traveler wants is the baggage carousel to stop without their bags on it. Those who pay for their trip with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card automatically qualify for baggage delay benefits in the event they arrive at their final destination, but their bags do not.

If luggage is delayed by more than six hours while traveling on a common carrier (such as an airline or train line), the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card baggage delay benefit can reimburse you for up to $100 in essential items per day the luggage is lost. The benefit maximum is five days of delayed luggage, for a total maximum benefit of $500.

Not all emergency items are covered under the benefit. Excluded essential items include contact lenses or glasses, hearing aids, business samples, jewelry, watches, electronic equipment and cell phones. In addition, travelers are only allowed to purchase one cell phone charger under the duration of the benefit.

Lost luggage coverage

The term “lost luggage” doesn’t just apply to bags that are never recovered. A luggage loss can also apply to bags damaged by an airline or certain items that are damaged inside the bag.

If your bags are damaged in transit, you could receive the actual cash value (replacement cost less depreciation) for the items lost, damaged or destroyed during handling up to $3,000. There are jewelry and electronics limits of $500 each, respectively. The benefit may also extend to repair costs for checked or carry-on luggage.

» Learn more: 4 easy ways to make sure your lost luggage is found

To qualify for the lost luggage benefit, all losses must be immediately reported to the carrier. A carrier damage report must be submitted with the claim, otherwise, it could be denied.

Auto rental collision damage waiver

The most unsung benefit of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the primary auto rental collision damage waiver. If you rent a car and pay for it with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , you could receive reimbursement for damage due to collision or theft up to the actual cash value of the vehicle.

Because the insurance is primary coverage, you would not be forced to file a claim with other insurance sources before filing with the Chase. In order to use this benefit, however, renters must decline the rental company collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver. If the company forces you to purchase their collision damage waiver, you can call Chase for assistance.

Travel accident insurance

Travel accident insurance consists of two types of protections: Common carrier travel accident insurance and 24-hour travel accident insurance, both of which cover accidental death or dismemberment, loss of speech, sight or hearing that occur on a trip.

Common carrier travel accident insurance applies when a covered loss occurs when entering, exiting or riding as a passenger on an airline, bus, train, cruise ship or any other common carrier. The benefit limit is $500,000.

The 24-hour travel accident insurance covers any losses experienced beginning on the departure date and ending on the return date as printed on the airline ticket. The benefit limit is $100,000.

Any losses sustained while committing an illegal act, parachute jumping, or involving flights on aircraft that are not certified by the government, will void coverage.

Other assistance benefits on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card provides access to two helpful pay-per use services: Roadside dispatch and travel and emergency assistance services.

For a set price, roadside dispatch offers standard towing, tire changing, jump starting, lockout service, fuel delivery and standard winching assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Travel and emergency assistance provides help and referral services and connects you with appropriate local emergency and assistance resources while you’re traveling, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Example of services include medical referrals, legal referrals, emergency transportation assistance and more. The cost of using the services are the responsibility of the cardholder.

To file a claim for any of these benefits, your claim time frame begins the day the loss happens.

It’s important to file a claim as soon as possible, as claims can take time to process and provide reimbursement.

Claim information can be found in the benefits guide provided with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . In addition to filing a claim form, you must provide supporting documentation to prove your loss. This includes reports from your airline or other transportation carrier, receipts for purchases related to the loss, or other proof of items lost, damaged or stolen that may be covered.

Once a claim is approved, it can be reimbursed in as few as five days. If you have any questions, call 888-320-9961 from within the U.S. or 804-673-1691 from outside the U.S. Claims can also be filed online at Eclaimsline.com .

If you consider the benefits offered by the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to be inadequate or you don’t have a premium travel credit card that provides travel insurance, consider getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy to protect your trip.

To find a policy in your state, you can either check with an insurance provider that you’re already familiar with or check out an insurance comparison site, like SquareMouth.

Insurance comparison sites provide numerous policies to choose from, including travel medical insurance, long-term travel insurance, Cancel For Any Reason coverage and more. Choosing the right plan for you depends on your trip goals and the benefits you’d like to have on your vacation.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .

Holiday group Saga's profit forecast weighed down by insurance weakness

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Saga, which brought on a new CEO in November, has been struggling with its insurance business. It tried to sell its insurance underwriting arm, but put the sale process on hold shortly after ending talks with Australia's Open Insurance Technologies.

Saga increased prices at its insurance underwriting business in the past 18 months, saying it was now on a "much stronger footing" amid challenging conditions.

However, changes in the insurance broking business, including cutting prices and addressing recent declines in policy sales in motor and home insurance, meant earnings would take a short-term hit.

BY THE NUMBERS

Saga reported an underlying pretax profit of 38.2 million pounds ($47.6 million) for the year ended Jan. 31, more than double from a year earlier. Revenue jumped 12% to 741.1 million pounds.

Bookings for the company's Ocean Cruise unit remain strong, Saga said, having secured a load factor of 78% for 2024/25, higher than the same time last year. Travel bookings were also ahead.

"While our insurance business continued to be hindered by challenging conditions, with inflationary headwinds impacting policy volumes and margins, particularly for our three-year fixed-price policies, we are taking the necessary actions to reposition the business," CEO Mike Hazell said.

"Ocean Cruise had an outstanding year and, as a result, we far exceeded our initial earnings targets, while River Cruise and Travel both returned to profit for the first time since the pandemic."

MARKET REACTION

Saga shares opened lower and hit their lowest since October, before reversing course to be up about 3% by 0709 GMT.
