How to Visit Antarctica for your Honeymoon via Cruise or Private Flight

There are two ways to reach Antarctica for your honeymoon: a charter flight or cruise.

Cruising to Antarctica

The vast majority of people who visit Antarctica choose to voyage on a cruise. This allows for several days of exploration in Antarctica with experienced guides. It’s a popular option because cruise companies figure out all the logistics for their passengers. You won’t have to be the one to fuss with scheduling the nitty-gritty details, including meals. It’s all figured out for you. And since an Antarctica honeymoon entails more planning than most basic trips, their guidance is a big time and stress-saver.

Cruises to Antarctica typically start in Ushuaia, Argentina, commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the entire world. Mid-range vessels hold 80-200 passengers. Amenities onboard will likely include a lounge, bar, dining room, gift shop, gym, and an observation deck. Deluxe or luxury vessels may hold 100-200 travelers. Amenities will be similar to those on other major cruise ships.

Cruises can range from around $9,699 for a 9-night voyage per person to $15,599 for a 12-night voyage with a cruise line like Atlas Ocean Voyages . Plus, all of Atlas’ Antarctica sailings include extraordinary extras like roundtrip private charter jet service, complimentary excursions, and unlimited premium drinks.

Flying to Antarctica

You won’t be able to go to the airport and book a flight to Antarctica—the only flights tourists can book are charter flights included in package deals. Air/cruise package pricing is typically between $10,500-$27,500 per person.

Departing from Punta Arenas, Chile is popular amongst those who travel to this icy continent by plane. Travelers who are prone to seasickness often choose to forgo the savings of cruising to avoid the potential of rough seas on the way to Antarctica. But since there are no hotels, accommodations are typically on-board cruise ships, even if you fly in.

Be aware that flying does have an increased risk of delays related to weather conditions when compared to cruising.

Geography and Climate

Antarctica is a landmass made mostly of ice, situated in the southern hemisphere. It’s bordered by the Atlantic Ocean at the Antarctic Peninsula. The closest neighboring countries are Argentina, Chile, The Falklands and South Georgia. (Some of which are part of the Antarctic Zone.)

The air in Antarctica is dry—it’s a polar desert. Coastal temperatures are milder, with wetter climates than inland areas. Seasons are the reverse of those experienced in the United States because of the opposing hemisphere. Even though the traveling season includes “summer” for the area, it  will  be cold! Be prepared for temperatures hovering around or just above freezing, with windy conditions.

Our best advice? Pack layers, snow boots and a winter coat to wear on land. Save the dressier “date night” attire for onboard your cruise ship.

There are 24 hours of sunlight in Antarctica from mid-October through February. So, you’ll want to pack sunglasses and sunscreen. Because the ozone layer is thinner and snow reflects UV light, you’ll want to make sure you’re well protected.

Best Time to Visit

Leisure travel cruises and charter flights to Antarctica operate from late October to early March, their summer season. Traveling to Antarctica outside of these months is best left to the professionals due to extreme winter conditions.

Language to Know for your Honeymoon

Knowing languages other than English most likely won’t apply to your honeymoon. It is usual for most cruise lines to give announcements in English, even if they offer tours in additional languages. It never hurts to double-check before you book.

Antarctic Peninsula Time Zone

Antarctica’s large landmass spans multiple different time zones. But you’ll likely visit the Antarctic Peninsula, where most of the public itineraries plan to tour. In the Antarctic Peninsula, the time zone is Chile Summer Time (GMT -3 hours). Daylight Savings Time is not observed.

That means if it’s 3:00pm in New York during February, it’s 12:00pm in Los Angeles, California, and 5:00pm in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Currency for Your Trip

It may sound strange, but you can most likely leave your wallet in your cabin safe. If you’re on a cruise, you’ll be able to add most purchases to your bill and pay at the end. All cruise lines accept Visa and Mastercard, and many also accept American Express. You can also double-check your payment methods with your cruise or experiences ahead of time to be sure you’re prepared. FYI, Antarctica does not have its own legal tender.

Passport and Visa Requirements

You’ll need a passport to travel internationally for your Antarctica honeymoon. While there isn’t a traditional customs office checking passports in Antarctica, you’ll go through the standard checks at your departure destination and any other stops. You need a passport with one available page for stamps whether you arrive in  Chile  or  Argentina . It simply has to be valid for the duration of your stay. No visa is required for a stay of fewer than 90 days.

Vaccinations and COVID-19

Traveling on a cruise ship, even a lesser populated ship, means that vaccinations and COVID-19 precautions are of the utmost concern. The CDC recommends  routine vaccines  (the flu, measles, chickenpox, etc.). Additionally, check your cruise ship’s travel requirements with the cruise line you book. You may need to provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or evidence of a negative PCR test.

What to Expect during an Antarctica Honeymoon

You’ll revel in the rare and wonderful experience of traveling to Antarctica for your honeymoon. You’ll feel like you’re in a world all your own as you survey vistas of crisp, sparkling snow, towering icebergs and untamed wilderness that surround you.

Make sure your camera’s memory cards have plenty of room for awe-inspiring photography opportunities. (And that you bring a waterproof bag to protect your hardware.) Trekking through ice and snow makes for great photos and videos, both along the coast or inland.

We recommend planning plenty of time to just live in the moment, too! You can observe the natural habitats and behaviors of animals like penguins, seals, snow petrels, orcas, and wandering albatross. (No polar bears here! For that, you’d want to travel to the Arctic.) Rarely, even blue whales can be spotted during Antarctic summer, especially during late-season cruises.

If you’re going to the Antarctic by cruise (which is likely), prepare for the Drake Passage. It’s infamous for its unpredictable rough waters and large swells. If you are prone to seasickness or like to be well-prepared, consider packing remedies. Prescription medicines or over-the-counter pills for motion sickness may help. If you dread the Drake Passage, look for a cruise that bypasses it, or plan to fly in and out to avoid it altogether.

You might not know that many cruise lines actually visit Antarctica. Some even combine Antarctica with other destinations. Patagonia and the Falkland Islands, or South Georgia are common add-ons. Part of the appeal of Antarctica as a wedding or honeymoon destination is its sheer isolation. Relatively few people have ever seen its polar grandeur for themselves, and while vacations here have become increasingly accessible and popular, the White Continent still exudes a rich and intoxicating sense of adventure, discovery, and mystery. That vibe—and the bragging rights, of course—provide enough reason for smitten partners of a certain outside-the-box disposition to choose the bottom of the world to say their vows or celebrate their union.

As a backdrop for a wedding ceremony or honeymoon escape, Antarctica holds its own with any other place in the world. The scenery is utterly monumental and breathtaking: toothy, snow-streaked mountains rising from untouched cobble beaches, icebergs of fantastical shape (and often imposing dimensions), the glistening glazed rims of towering ice shelves.

And the wildlife is world-class, with the opportunity to spice up your romantic proceedings with spouting whales, clamoring penguins, fuzzy seal pups, and wheeling albatrosses.

The luxuriously long days of the Antarctic summer; the singular quality of polar sunlight playing across snow, ice, and black rock; the impeccable night skies enjoyed during the “shoulder seasons” of the tourism window; the sense of being as close to the ends of the Earth as is possible—we find ourselves repeating that the White Continent is simply in a class of its own when it comes to wedding and honeymoon destinations.

Can you get married in Antarctica? As it happens, you can, and, indeed, White Continent nuptials are likely to become more and more of a thing.

People have ceremonially tied the knot in Antarctica for some time, but the first official legal ceremony took place in February 2022 on a Happy Ever Atlas cruise by Atlas Ocean Voyages that launched (appropriately enough) on Valentine’s Day. That cruise saw four weddings, in fact, plus three vow renewals for good measure, kicking off the White Continent’s formal matrimonial log with a flurry.

Those cruise-based wedding ceremonies—held on scenic Danco Island off the Antarctic Peninsula and associated with an onboard wedding reception, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and other festivities—were presided over by a British Antarctic Territory-registered Marriage Officer. The newlyweds obtained wedding licenses issued by the B.A.T. Administration which are officially recognized not only in the U.K. but also the U.S. and many other countries.

Atlas Ocean Voyages isn’t the only tour operator to offer wedding ceremonies in Antarctica, and the Antarctic Peninsula isn’t the only possibility for ceremony sites. The company Red Savannah , for example, offers a wedding package that flies you from Cape Town, South Africa to the astonishing Wolf’s Fang runway on the ice sheet of Queen Maud Land for a couldn’t-get-more-remote ceremony and reception. Accommodation options are available at some of the nearby luxury camps run by White Desert.

Treat the logistics of an Antarctic marriage ceremony like any other overseas wedding, and make advance arrangements with any tour operator to ensure they can offer such an experience.

And, hey: Embrace the one-of-a-kind possibilities of this whitest of white weddings! Maybe eschew the traditional wedding gown and tuxedo and don penguin suits instead for the occasion? (Just an idea.)

Perhaps an Antarctica wedding isn’t feasible for you. Maybe you desire a larger guest list than is possible on the White Continent, or a destination wedding that’s a little less extreme of a destination.

Well, why not consider a honeymoon in Antarctica, then? This option certainly gives you plenty of flexibility and the full gamut of Antarctic tour options. Depending on how much time you have, your Antarctica honeymoon could be a comparatively short fly-and-cruise trip to the White Continent, a longer Antarctic cruise working in such fabulous along-the-way destinations as the South Shetlands, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands, or even a daytrip flight. (Daylong sightseeing flights to Antarctica are also available from South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.)

If you’d like the most luxurious Antarctica honeymoon, you might consider a large cruise ship with the most upscale of accommodations and onboard amenities. Such a lavish vessel gives you the otherworldly scenery of Antarctica as a backdrop to your romantic voyage, but you won’t be setting foot on the continent.

For greater flexibility and more variety in the activities department, definitely consider an expedition-type vessel for your honeymoon in Antarctica. These smaller ships deliver a more intimate experience, and launch Zodiacs for up-close sightseeing amid icebergs and polar headlands and making landfall on everything from islands and mainland beaches to offshore sea ice.

Adventurous couples can’t do better than an Antarctica honeymoon. Go kayaking amid brash ice, watching for spyhopping seals and whales as you paddle. Camp out together for a night under the Antarctic stars. Take a skiing or snowshoeing tour over unblemished snow, with wilderness mountainscapes and coastlines forming an unbelievable panorama. Stroll hand-in-hand within view of hordes of cute-as-heck penguins. Cheer each other on in a swimsuited polar plunge. Schedule a trip at the tail-end of Antarctic tourism season to see whether a dazzling display of the Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights) might anoint your freshly “officialized” love.

Depending on the tour you sign up for, you can venture beyond the Antarctic Peninsula for a honeymoon cruise across the Antarctic Circle (maybe doing a photo-op kiss to mark that momentous crossing?), perhaps foraying to the ice-shelf ramparts and signal volcanoes of the Ross Sea. Or arrange a fly-in to the Geographic South Pole for the sort of bragging rights very few newlyweds can lay claim to.

Imagine gazing into one another’s eyes against a sublime skyline few human eyes have ever taken in.

To sum up: Antarctica weddings and honeymoons take romance to a whole other level. Definitely something to keep in mind if your biggest of big days—or an overdue honeymoon—is on the horizon!

Antarctica Honeymoon: The Expedition Begins!

Antarctica . Everything about that word seemed untouchable. It is the coldest, driest, windiest, and virtually uninhabited continent, but it kept calling to us. We have explored six continents on our HoneyTrek, which only fueled our desire to reach the seventh…but how would we ever take an Antarctica Honeymoon? This was a place reserved for penguins, scientists and the ultra rich. Then we met Quark Expeditions : one of the most adventurous, sustainable, affordable, and down-to-earth outfitters specializing in the Polar Regions. We told them about our four-year journey and goal to be the first couple to honeymoon all seven continents, and they were determined to help get us there. Before we knew it, we were signed up for the “ Antarctic Explorer ” expedition on the Ocean Endeavor, their recently renovated ship with the most adventure options. And so began our journey…a 1,605-nautical mile, 12-day trip to the Antarctic Peninsula and the wildest place on Earth.

Ushuaia, The End of the World

We met some of the Quark team and our expedition mates in Buenos Aires for the charter flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, “The End of the World.” We visited Ushuaia at the very beginning of our HoneyTrek and remember marveling at the Antarctic expedition ships in the harbor, trying to fathom what that trip would be like. Now we were here, giddy as all get up, knowing that one of those ships was ours.

The Ocean Endeavor

We boarded The Ocean Endeavor: an Ice Class 1B, 450-foot, 17,420-horse power expedition ship. The 175 passengers were greeted by the 150-person staff (how’s that ratio for personal attention?), and our bags were whisked away to our rooms, while we sipped complimentary cocktails and explored the ship. The recent renovation showed with contemporary furnishings, a variety of cozy lounges, a full VOYA spa, two huge wooden saunas, a modern fitness center, a salt water pool, jacuzzi, and plenty of observation decks. Our fabulous room (bottom two right photos) was the “Twin Porthole Plus 2,” which basically meant his & her everything: Two windows, two bathrooms, two flat-screen TVs, and plenty of space for a couple…or even a third, since our leather couch pulled out. Rooms on the ship range from economical triples to a 320sq-ft suite with bow-facing windows. No matter which category you choose, each is assigned a room attendant for your every request. Joanna made us feel like royalty!

Drake Passage

A thick Kiwi accent came through the loudspeaker (the main way of keeping up on the day’s schedule, whale sightings, or anything exciting), asking us to come to the main lounge for an orientation and safety briefing. That was Cheli Larsen, our extremely experienced and hysterical expedition leader. She had a wonderful way of delivering info with comedy and brutal honesty, making even bad news sound like an adventure. “Tonight, we’ll enjoy sailing the sheltered waters of the Beagle Channel,” she says “then for two days, you lucky ducks get to experience the legendary ‘Drake Shake’!” The Drake Passage is a 500-mile wide, 2-mile deep stretch of turbulent sea where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans collide, creating arguably the world’s most dangerous stretch of sea. We had the privilege of 24-ft swells and 21-knot winds for a proper dance-off with The Drake. We have strong stomachs so we found the experience pretty entertaining, walking around at a 30-degree angle, watching furniture slosh across the room, and feeling the almighty force of the sea.

Days At Sea

There were tons of activities on offer to pass the time on The Drake: Educational lectures, photography workshops, yoga classes, movies, visits to the bridge, kayak and SUP orientations, four-course dinners, and your relaxation method of choice. To wrap our head around the profound science and history of Antarctica, we went to as many of the talks as possible by their resident glaciologists, marine biologists, ornithologists, polar historians, among other impressive experts on board. The experience and resumés of the expedition team blew our minds. Our favorite example is Tara, a young woman who completed the first-ever kayak circumnavigation of the four main islands of Svalbard, Noway—a frigid archipelago full of dangerous polar bears, walrus, and whales–and she wasn’t even the ship’s kayak guide!!!

Icebergs Ahead!

After 58 hours of rockin’ and rollin’ with Mr. Drake, the winds subsided, the sun came out, and our hopes for Antarctica beamed bright. Icebergs straight out of the Discovery Channel were just drifting by—with penguins on them! Looking at everyone’s favorite flightless birds waddle on the ice was surreal, only to be topped by a dozen of them swimming alongside us.

Whale Welcoming Committee

Then came the humpback whales. One would have been exiting, five would have been outstanding…but a pod of 40+? Unreal! The captain skillfully positioned the boat so we could watch them dive for krill, show off their speckled tails (each one unique like a fingerprint), and spout like fountains. Whales migrate to the Antarctic peninsula in the summer months to feed on the water’s incredible abundance of krill (up to 30,000 of these crustaceans per cubic meter!). Whale watching is best in late February and March, conveniently the exact time-frame of our trip.

First Expedition: Cierva Cove

We anchored for our first expedition in the jaw-dropping Cierva Cove. It reminded us of our favorite parts of Patagonia, like the sheer peaks of the Fitz Roy and the icebergs calving off the face of Glacier Grey , rolled into one. Most passengers geared up in their spiffy new yellow parkas and rubber boots (kindly provided by Quark) to explore by zodiac, while we joined our fellow kayakers for an epic paddle. To make sure participants have the best equipment, training, and nature experience, Quark only takes 16 kayakers per expedition. (When you go to Antarctica, make sure you are one of them!) Quietly paddling up to an iceberg with a family of crabeater seals, watching their silvery fur glisten in the sun, listening to the sounds of their grunts and ice crunching with their every move…it was the most intimate way to explore and appreciate the White Continent.

The Polar Plunge

It’s an Antarctic right of passage to take the Polar Plunge, i.e. hurling yourself into the near-frozen sea for the fun of it. We stood on the dock in our bathing suits, watching a crew member move icebergs out of the swimming area, and thought there was something terribly wrong with this situation. And before you can reconsider…”One, Two, Three, Jump!” I did my best stag leap into the 2-degree Celsius water and felt the chill to my core. I surfaced with a huge gasp, appreciating air more than ever, and scrambled like a wet cat to the ladder. With my feet firmly on the rungs, a huge smile emerged. (You wouldn’t believe me, but check that photo top right.) Feels good to be alive.

Antarctica Honeymoon

We survived the Drake Passage and we were greeted to Antarctica with whales and sunshine. A celebration was in order. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres were served on the deck, the captain gave a warm welcome speech, and a little dance party broke out. There was much to celebrate and this was just the beginning…

This sounds like an incredible experience! I was hanging on every word! Just seeing the penguins sounds brilliant but then you got to the humpbacked whales and I was in awe of both those majestic creatures and your journey!

The Polar Plunge sounds absolutely dreadful and you are crazy but brave to have done it! Forget the ice bucket challenge, you’ve gone one better!

The Polar Plunge is crazy but its invigorating and really puts things in perspective…makes you think about the seals, penguins, and whales that swim in this all day–and this is their summer! Another world for certain. The wildlife sightings were unreal…and this blog is truly just the beginning.

First off wow! Super exciting post! I am not sure I would survive the Drakes Shake! That makes my tummy anxious! The pictures of you jumping into the cold water, phew and brrrrrr. What an adventure. The ice bergs were beautiful!

The Drake was actually a cool experience. The boat is amazing the way it cuts through the waves and wind. You can fly to Antarctica but crossing the Drake really adds to the adventure and you are completely rewarded when you arrive to the icebergs and whales!

An expedition to Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for intrepid travelers who want to explore this remote destination at the bottom of the world. The landscapes are surreal, with eerily blue icebergs, towering ice-capped mountains, dramatic weather conditions that change within seconds and species of wildlife that exist nowhere else on Earth – it's hard to imagine until you've made the long journey yourself.

The fifth-largest continent is home to the largest ice sheet on the planet, the Antarctic Ice Sheet, as well as the Transantarctic Mountains, with peaks soaring more than 14,700 feet into the sky. West Antarctica has volcanoes that are part of a tectonically active area around the Pacific Ocean known as the "Ring of Fire." This incredibly diverse and magical part of the world also has the coldest temperature ever recorded at -135.8 degrees Fahrenheit in 2010.

Atlas Ocean Voyages: 11-night Ushuaia Roundtrip

This 11-night expedition with Atlas is available on several dates in 2024. One highlight of the voyage is crossing the Antarctic Circle, along with four days exploring Antarctica and two days spent in the South Shetland Islands. You'll also have two days en route to Antarctica and two days on the return trip on the famed Drake Passage – also known as the "Drake Lake" (on smooth days) or the "Drake Shake" (when the seas are rough).

During your days at sea, take in all the onboard lectures and films about Antarctica, and head outside on the decks to see petrels and albatrosses soaring overhead. This is the perfect opportunity to practice your photography skills before reaching the Antarctic Peninsula, where you want to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints.

Atlas' Jan. 14 expedition is on the line's newest ship, World Voyager. The purpose-built yacht-style vessel features a hydro-jet propulsion system that's quieter and less disruptive to the fragile ecosystem. This feature also provides the opportunity for guests to see more wildlife during up-close encounters. Pricing is all-inclusive on board the ship with free open bars; all meals, wines, spirits and craft beers; a stocked in-room minibar; all landings, Zodiac excursions and lectures; the use of kayaks, walking sticks, knee boots and binoculars; and a souvenir Atlas jacket to take home. Fares also include a one-night pre-cruise stay and private charter jet service round-trip from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Aurora Expeditions: Antarctic Peninsula in Depth

Aurora offers a 14-night Antarctic intensive voyage sailing round-trip from Ushuaia on Nov. 6, 2024, aboard the 132-passenger purpose-built expedition ship Greg Mortimer. This vessel was the first passenger ship to utilize the state-of-the-art Ulstein X-BOW, which provides a smoother, quicker and more efficient transit across the ocean. The ship also incorporates many environmentally conscious features, including low energy consumption and virtual anchoring, which protects the sea floor and minimizes damage caused by traditional anchors.

Guests will find expansive observation decks and hydraulic viewing platforms for optimal wildlife viewing on board. Other highlights of the expedition are nine full days to explore the Antarctic Peninsula in nearly 24 hours of daylight at the peak of summer. During this time, you can expect to see whales arriving to feed on the plentiful krill, fur seal pups and many entertaining penguins.

Prices are mostly all-inclusive, with a one-night hotel stay before boarding the ship; all meals, snacks and complimentary nonalcoholic beverages; beer and house wine at lunch and dinner; the use of Muck Boots for the expedition; all shore excursions and Zodiac cruises; educational lectures; and more. Adventurous explorers can add on activities (at an additional cost) such as sea kayaking, snowshoeing, camping, and skiing or snowboarding. The line also offers longer 20- to 24-day expeditions that include South Georgia Island.

Hurtigruten Expeditions: Antarctica, Patagonia and Chilean Fjords Expedition

For an extended adventure that includes crossing the Drake Passage twice, spending up to five days in Antarctica and then landing on Cape Horn in Chile (weather permitting), consider the 25-night grand expedition cruise aboard the Hutrigruten Expeditions' MS Roald Amundsen. Additional highlights are scenic cruising in Garibaldi Fjord in Alberto de Agostini National Park to see the Garibaldi Glacier; visiting the town of Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park ; and seeing the longest Southern Hemisphere glacier outside of Antarctica (which grows by as much as 150 feet a day), the Pio XI Glacier in Bernado O'Higgins National Park. This epic adventure begins March 9, 2024, in Buenos Aires and ends in Valparaíso, Chile.

The ship for the voyage, MS Roald Amundsen, is a hybrid vessel that reduces CO2 emissions by using electrical propulsion – and it's designed specifically for use in polar waters. The vessel carries just 500 guests (to adhere to regulations for visiting Antarctica) and features all exterior cabins with Scandinavian inspired decor. Guests will also find an Explorer lounge and bar, three dining venues, the Science Center, a sauna and spa, and other amenities. Fares are mostly all-inclusive, covering a complimentary expedition jacket; the use of expedition equipment like boots and trekking poles; landing activities; most dining options; and wine, beer and soft drinks at meals.

Lindblad Expeditions – National Geographic: Journey to Antarctica: The White Continent

Lindblad Expeditions was the first company to bring citizen explorers to Antarctica in 1966, pioneering travel to this remote destination. The line's 13-night expedition to Antarctica is offered nearly 20 times throughout the summer season in 2024 on one of three ships. Depending on the ship, guests will have one evening in either Buenos Aires or Santiago, Chile , before flying to Ushuaia the next morning to embark the vessel.

With about five days to explore Antarctica, you'll have time to take in the awe-inspiring landscapes and look for seals and blue-eyed shags up close from Zodiacs. On land, watch thousands of Adélie and gentoo penguins as they playfully slide down the snow-covered hills on their bellies – one right after the other – diving headfirst into the icy waters. After the adventure, a private charter flight will return you to either Buenos Aires or Santiago before your return flight home.

The line's newest expedition vessel, National Geographic Resolution, accommodates just 138 guests – and there are two new cabins for solo cruisers . Guests on the Polar Class 5 vessel will have a National Geographic photographer and a Lindblad-National Geographic-certified photo instructor and video chronicler documenting the trip. Onboard amenities include a yoga studio, a wellness specialist, infinity-style hot tubs, two restaurants and a chef's table, and plenty of indoor and outdoor viewing areas. This ship also carries an ROV (a remotely operated vehicle) for underwater exploration and other high-tech video gear.

You can even book an overnight stay in an igloo (on a first-come, first-served basis) and spend the evening under the polar sky. Fares are mostly all-inclusive and include all onboard meals and most meals ashore; nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; transfers; excursions; a complimentary jacket; and more.

Silversea: King George Island to King George Island (Antarctica Bridge)

Silversea's six-night Antarctica Bridge expedition takes guests round-trip by a business class flight directly to the Antarctica Peninsula, flying into King George Island from Punta Arenas, Chile. This itinerary is offered several times throughout the season for guests who don't have extensive time to travel – or are nervous about sailing the Drake Passage. Silversea 's pricing is all-inclusive, and guests can choose between door-to-door or port-to-port fares.

While the weather determines the specific itinerary in Antarctica, guests can expect to have several excursions in the Antarctic Sound and as many as nine excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula that include hiking, kayaking and scenic Zodiac cruises with the expedition team. There's also one excursion in the South Shetland Islands, where you can look for massive elephant seals. There will be an abundance of bird and animal viewing on wildlife-rich King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands, which is home to Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins as well as Weddell and leopard seals.

Oceanwide Expeditions and Swoop Antarctica: Quest for the Emperor Penguins of Snow Hill Island

Swoop Antarctica's 10-night adventure-filled journey takes wildlife and history enthusiasts into the ice-choked waters of the Weddell Sea, past towering tabular icebergs, in search of the emperor penguin's rookery on Snow Hill: one of the most remote penguin rookeries on the planet. The incredible itinerary also sails through the same waters where famed Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, sank in 1915 – and to the rarely seen west slopes of the Antarctic Sound.

Other highlights include Zodiac and helicopter landings (weather permitting) to additional remote locales, including Seymour Island, where the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901 to 1904 spent a winter season; Brown Bluff, one of the most scenic places on the northern tip of the Antarctic Continent and home to a large Adélie penguin rookery; and the volcanic crater of Deception Island.

There are two sailings in November 2024 on board the 1A-class, ice-strengthened Oceanwide Expeditions' Ortelius: a 108-passenger former Russian research vessel. Fares includes all meals and nonalcoholic beverages, all Zodiac and shore excursions, educational lectures, helicopter transfers, and group transfers. Optional adventure activities, alcoholic beverages and other personal expenses are at an additional cost.

The onboard helicopter pad is one of the features of the vessel and is used on select expeditions in the Weddell and Ross seas. It's important to note that very few companies offer expeditions to the Weddell Sea that include Snow Hill Island. While Ortelius is not a luxury vessel like other ships mentioned in this list, it is a stable expedition-style ship built for these icy – and at times treacherous – waters and weather conditions.

Viking: Antarctica & South Georgia Island

Viking's 18-night Antarctica and South Georgia Island expedition begins with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires followed by a flight the next morning to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. The first two stops on the expedition are in the Falkland Islands, where you'll find beautiful scenery with imposing cliffs, many types of marine birds and five species of penguins. In South Georgia, watch for king penguins and seals. Then, it's on to Antarctica for days 12 through 16. Guests will have the option to reserve a spot on the Viking DNV-classed submarine for a thrilling journey into the depths of the frigid waters in Antarctica. The return sailing, by way of the Drake Passage, disembarks in Ushuaia.

In 2024, this itinerary is available Jan. 31 and again Dec. 15 on Viking Octantis. The purpose-built Polar Class 6 vessel accommodates up to 378 guests and offers many of the same venues found on Viking's ocean ships, including the Explorers' Lounge, World Café, Mamsen's, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and the Nordic Spa. There are also expedition-specific features, such as Expedition Central, the Science Lab and – for educational lectures and briefings – the Aula theater. Viking's fares are mostly all-inclusive, with all meals and wine and beer served with lunch and dinner; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and nonalcoholic beverages; a keepsake Viking jacket; complimentary use of the excursion gear; and more.

Expert tips on Antarctica expeditions

There are many factors to consider when planning an Antarctica expedition, including where you want to travel to, the length of the trip and whether you want to sail the famed Drake Passage twice.

To provide helpful insights and information to plan your trip, U.S. News reached out to an expert in the region, Aurora Expeditions' expedition leader, Ashley Perrin , for tips on planning your adventure to the White Continent. Perrin has degrees in both geography and oceanography from the University of Southampton. She was appointed as the first woman boating officer in Antarctica by the British Antarctic Survey in 2009, and has led multiple expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands.

Which month is best (in your opinion) to travel to Antarctica and why? 

Perrin: "My favorite time to travel to Antarctica is the end of December or beginning of January, because the penguin chicks are starting to come out and you get the most wildlife spotting opportunities, with marine mammals, penguins and albatross – on top of the spectacular scenery."

What length of trip do you recommend for first-time visitors?

Perrin: "The 10- to 12-day Spirit of Antarctica or Antarctic Explorer (with Aurora Expeditions) is a fantastic introduction to the Antarctic Peninsula. If you had the additional time and opportunity, ideally you would also opt for a voyage that visits South Georgia. For many travelers, this is really the jewel in the crown of the Antarctic experience because of the incredible wildlife opportunities here."

What should you look for in an expedition ship/tour when planning a trip to Antarctica?

Perrin: "Travelers should look for a high-quality educational experience, including lectures and opportunities for Citizen Science. This is such a fascinating and important destination, and you want to ensure you can learn and take as much in as you can. A pivotal factor in this is also choosing a company that offers low passenger numbers.

"Travelers don't have enough of an understanding of the impact of this on their voyage. In the Antarctic Peninsula only 100 people are allowed on land at one time, while at some sites it is 30 to 50 people. Having smaller groups enables passengers to have more time off ship exploring and connecting with nature, and this has such a significant impact on your experience.

"If you like to be a little more active, I would also highly recommend an operator that offers activities, such as kayaking in Antarctica. This allows you to see Antarctica from a different viewpoint and the silence is amazing. You still have opportunities to do landings as well, so I think it's the best of both worlds."

Do you prefer the combination fly/sail for the Drake Passage or sailing the Drake Passage both ways?

Perrin: "I prefer to sail both ways as it's how you earn your right to get to Antarctica! You also get more opportunities to see wildlife like seabirds, and it gives you extra time to prepare for the Antarctic experience through pre-lectures and education. Travelers arrive with more of an understanding of what to expect."

Any other tips, advice or comments you'd like to share?

Perrin: "Do your research into the operator you are choosing and their different offerings – things like passenger numbers, expedition team experience and off ship activities – as these can all have a significant impact on the travel experience. There is also a big difference between traditional cruise operators and expedition operators and what travelers can expect. We ensure that our passengers are exploring and getting off the ship as much as possible.

"I would also add that it's important to do your research into the areas that you're most interested in. For example, it could be history, exploration and walking in someone's footsteps (such as Sir Ernest Shackleton), or the types of wildlife you might see. Having a deeper understanding of the history and the region really does enhance the experience once you are there."

Frequently Asked Questions

An expedition where you get off the ship and make landings on the Antarctic peninsula typically costs about $10,000 per person for a 10-night voyage. However, depending on the cruise line, the ship and dates of travel – and whether you sail or fly the Drake Passage – you could spend as much as $29,000 per person for a 12-night expedition or more. There are slightly lower prices for some expeditions, such as a few with Hurtigruten Expeditions, and you can find reduced fares and deals with lines like Atlas Ocean Voyages and Quark Expeditions. In addition, there are extended polar expeditions that range from a 14-night trip to the 94-night Pole-to-Pole Ultimate Bucket List Expedition Cruise with Hurtigruten Expeditions, which is priced at close to $48,000.

If you're not interested in getting off the ship in Antarctica to see penguins and seals up close (but no closer than 15 feet, according to the Antarctic Treaty), you can opt for a voyage on a large cruise ship that sails around the continent for a much lower cost. Just know that you won't be able to disembark at any point in Antarctica. For example, Norwegian Cruise Line has a 14-night Antarctica and South America voyage that makes a round trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina, for as low as $999 per person. You may be able to find even cheaper fares from lines such as Celebrity Cruises or Princess Cruises.

It's important to note that by the rules set forth in the Antarctic Treaty, only ships carrying 500 or less passengers are permitted to make landings on the Antarctica peninsula. The Antarctic Treaty, along with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, has strict conservation protocols and regulates that no more than 100 passengers are allowed to go ashore at one time. The IAATO works with more than 100 Antarctica outfitters to create the guidelines and safety procedures to protect the fragile environment and wildlife in this remote part of the world.

The following cruise lines offer small ship expeditions in Antarctica with no more than 500 passengers. You can also look at tour companies – such as Abercrombie & Kent, G Adventures, Adventure Life and Swoop Antarctica – that exclusively charter ships or help navigate the decision-making process for their clients and book individual expeditions with the cruise lines.

The answer depends on the expedition. The majority of passengers will depart from South America in either Ushuaia, Argentina – which is also known as the "End of the World" – or Punta Arenas, Chile. Then it will take approximately two days to cross the Drake Passage to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. Some lines also offer chartered flights from Punta Arenas to Antarctica, which only take about two hours. Some passengers who have taken the flight say it can be as unnerving as sailing the Drake Passage, since weather conditions can delay the flight for up to several days where you could potentially miss the trip.

Cruises on larger ships that only sail around the Antarctic Peninsula may embark in Buenos Aires; Santiago, Chile; Puerto Williams, Chile; Rio de Janeiro; ports in Florida or New Zealand; or even the South Shetland Islands.

The expedition and cruise season to Antarctica extends from November to March, which is during the austral summer in the Southern Hemisphere. But Antarctica is still the windiest, coldest and driest continent on Earth, so weather conditions are unpredictable and can change quickly – even during the summertime. One minute the sun may be out, and the next minute it can be snowing and extremely windy and cloudy.

Visitors in November can expect temperatures between a low of 25 degrees to a high of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmest temperatures are typically in January, when you'll find days ranging between 33 to 36 degrees before they start to drop again in February.

Most expedition companies provide jackets that you can take home, so you won't need to bring a heavy parka if it's given to you on board. They may also provide waterproof boots that you'll need to use for wet landings. It's best to check with your expedition line to see what's available on the ship, what you can rent or buy, and what you'll need to pack and bring with you. Due to the unpredictable weather, it's advisable to bring different types of layers.

Here are some of the items you'll want to pack:

Layers: Pack at least two top and two bottom quick-drying base layers (or more, depending on the length of your expedition) that wick moisture, such as those made of silk, wool or bamboo. It does get toasty when you're layered up and moving around ashore, so choose lightweight options that will layer easily under the rest of your clothing and keep you warm and dry. For your mid-layer top, go with a lightweight polar fleece or vest; for the bottom, quick-drying warm tights or fleece pants are a good option.

You'll also want to layer what's on your feet, starting with a wicking pair of socks made from silk or synthetic polypropylene, followed by a good pair of merino wool socks from a brand like Smartwool. Glove liners are another must, especially if your hands tend to get cold. If you can, buy insulated waterproof gloves with removable liners to save packing an extra item. You may also want to toss a few hand and foot warmers in the suitcase in case you need extra warmth. Bring a lighter pair of insulated gloves for warmer days off the ship.

And don't forget a lined wool beanie, a set of earmuffs, and a balaclava or fleece neck gaiter to keep your ears and face warm and your nose and mouth protected from the cold air and wind.

Waterproof gear: The parka and tall waterproof boots may be provided on the ship, but if they're not, you'll need to bring your own. You'll also need wind- and waterproof pants to go over your base layer and mid-layers. If they're tapered at the bottom, you should be able to tuck them into your boots. Perrin says this is one of the most important items you should purchase and pack for your expedition.

Comfy clothes ­and shoes for around the ship: Most people dress casual on Antarctica cruises, so bring clothes that will be comfortable for days and evenings around the ship. It can get rough when crossing the Drake Passage, so you'll want flat or low-heeled shoes for those days at sea.

Other items you'll want to pack:

• Waterproof dry pack
• Sea-Bands and medications for motion sickness
• Camera and accessories with a waterproof cover
• Hiking poles (unless the ship has them available)
• Swimsuit (you may want to take the polar plunge!)
• Other necessary medications
• Hydrating lip balm and a good protective moisturizer
• Polarized sunglasses
• Books on the history of early exploration in Antarctica and the incredible wildlife

• Don't introduce any non-native species that could become invasive species.
• Always listen to your guides and the ship's crew while on day-trips.
• Make sure to observe animals from a safe distance and never try to touch them (at least 15 feet is a good recommendation).

A Typical Day on an Antarctica Cruise

• The cruising season in the Arctic is from May to September, while in Antarctica it runs from November through March.
• While temperatures in Antarctica can be more extreme than in the Arctic, the cruising season tends to stay between 20-30 degree Fahrenheit, with plenty of sunny days (sometimes with 24 hours of sunlight each day). 
• A trip through the Arctic might bring you through any of the following countries: Canada, the US, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Finland. Longer comprehensive cruises might do the whole Northwest Passage or cruise almost all of the Arctic Circle. Cruises board either in Scandinavia, Russia, or Canada.
• Antarctica trips either start in Ushuaia, Argentina for cruises or Punta Arenas for the fly cruises over the Drake Passage . 
• Polar bears or Penguins - While penguins are so prolific in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean that the idea of not seeing hundreds on your cruise seems absurd, the polar bears of the Arctic can be much harder to spot (though some feel that they are more majestic and rewarding when you do spot them). NOTE: Polar bears live in the Arctic and penguins live in the southern hemisphere, so there is nowhere (other than perhaps a zoo) where you will see them both living in their natural habitat on the same trip. 
• Wildlife in Antarctica features more whales and many different types of seals. 
• Active travelers might prefer Antarctica for the chances to do activities like camping, kayaking, mountaineering, cross-country skiing, paddleboarding or scuba diving, which aren't included on Arctic tours for safety reasons.
• Ice vs. Land: Antarctica is aptly named the White Continent because its landmass is almost entirely permanently frozen ice and glaciers with towering rocky mountains, while the Arctic Circle goes through a summer season of lush vegetation when its icy coat melts away.

• Emperor Penguins - the tallest, heaviest and perhaps most famous of the penguin species.

• Rockhopper Penguins  - get their name because they are found jumping from jagged rock to rock instead of waddling like most penguins.

Officially certified proof of vaccination and booster will be required ahead of travel and we will require that it be emailed to Aurora no later than 15 days prior to departure.

Aurora Expeditions does not require passengers to undergo tests for COVID-19 prior to embarkation or during the voyage. We do not conduct routine COVID-19 testing unless required by the relevant authorities. However, passengers who report symptoms of COVID-19 to the medical team during a voyage will be tested.

We have implemented enhanced biosecurity measures for arrival in Antarctica and reinforced our onboard protocols, and our expedition team will continue to closely assess each landing site to ensure to determine any risks.

In the spirit of expedition travel, we encourage you to adopt a flexible and adventurous attitude when joining our voyages. This itinerary is a guide only and is subject to change due to weather, sea state and other conditions beyond our control.

Day 1 Arrive Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia, where you will be met by a representative of Aurora Expeditions and transferred with your fellow expeditioners to your assigned pre-voyage hotel. If you are already in Ushuaia, we ask you to make your way to your hotel. Check-in is from 3.00 pm. This afternoon, visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk in the lobby at Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort, Luis Fernando Martial 1650, between 8.00 am and 12.00 pm, or 3.00 pm and 7.00 pm, to collect your luggage tags, and confirm if you wish to join our Beagle Channel and Isla de Los Lobos Cruise (sea lion island) tomorrow. Our team will confirm details regarding your embarkation day, answer any questions and provide you with information on where to dine or purchase last minute items.   

Expeditioners arriving after 7.00 pm will find a welcome pack waiting for them at check-in. We ask you to visit our hospitality desk tomorrow between 8.00 am – 10.00 am.  

The remainder of your time is at leisure. All meals today are at your own expense.

Day 2 Embarkation

This morning, enjoy breakfast and check-out. Please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Take your cabin luggage to hotel reception, prior to, or at check-out. Your luggage will be stored and transferred directly to the port for clearance, to be placed in your cabin ahead of your arrival on board. Please keep any valuables or personal items with you throughout the day.  

Your morning is at leisure to explore Ushuaia. 

Those wishing to join our afternoon catamaran cruise, meet back at the hotel lobby at 12.45 pm ready to transfer to the port at 1.00 pm. Here we board our catamaran and sail the Beagle Channel, towards the city’s iconic  Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse. Crossing the Bridges Archipelago we’ll slow down to watch colonies of sea lions and imperial cormorants sun themselves on the rocky outcrops, while gulls, rock cormorants, skuas, petrels, albatrosses and cauquenes are often sighted. Our cruise offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountain range, in addition to hearing tales of the people and communities of the region. 

Alternatively, enjoy your day at leisure and meet at your hotel lobby at 3.45 pm to be transferred to the pier for embarkation. 

Once onboard, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin before our important mandatory briefings. As the ship pulls away from port, we’ll gather on the deck to commence our adventure with spectacular views over Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego.  

This evening get to know your fellow expeditioners and friendly expedition team and crew at a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of a thrilling adventure to Antarctica. 

Days 3-4 Drake Passage Crossing

As we commence the Drake Passage crossing, we make the most of our time getting comfortable with the motions of the sea. Our expedition team prepare you for our first landing with important wildlife guidelines and biosecurity procedures and start our lecture program to help you learn more about Antarctica’s history, wildlife and environment. 

Our wildlife experiences begin as we enjoy watching and photographing the many seabirds, including majestic albatrosses and giant petrels following our vessel. On sea days, you may can enjoy the facilities on board the vessel including the gym, wellness centre or the relaxing in one of the observation lounges.  

Nearing the South Shetland Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula on the afternoon of day four, the excitement is palpable with everyone converging on one of the observation decks watching for our first iceberg. The ocean takes on a whole new perspective once we are below the Antarctic Convergence and are surrounded by the surreal presence of floating ice sculptures. The memory of your first big iceberg sighting is likely to remain with you for a lifetime. Time and weather permitting, we may attempt our first landing in Antarctica by late afternoon. 

Days 5-9 Antarctic Peninsula

It is almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Spotting your first iceberg and taking a deep breath of some of the most fresh, crisp air on earth is an experience that will stay with you forever.  

Once we arrive, the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands are ours to explore, and we have a host of choices available to us. Because we are so far south, we will experience approximately 18-24 hours of daylight and the days can be as busy as you wish.  

Your experienced expedition team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to design your voyage from day to day, choosing the best options based on the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities. 

We generally make landings or Zodiac excursions twice a day. You will want to rug up before joining Zodiac cruises along spectacular ice cliffs or among grounded icebergs, keeping watch for whales, seals and porpoising penguins. Zodiacs will also transport you from the ship to land, where you can visit penguin rookeries, discover historic huts and explore some of our favourite spots along the peninsula.  

While ashore we aim to stretch our legs, wandering along pebbly beaches or perhaps up snow-covered ridgelines to vantage points with mountains towering overhead and ice-speckled oceans below. If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do participate in the activity whenever conditions allow, and of course keen polar plungers will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in polar waters - conditions permitting! The polar plunge can take place at any time during the voyage, so listen out for the announcement from the expedition team and get ready for the most exhilarating dip of your life!  

In addition to Zodiac cruises and shore excursions, we may ship cruise some of the narrow, dramatic straits separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales travelling or feeding. This is a great time to enjoy the observation lounge or make your way to the bridge (open at the captain’s discretion) for uninterrupted views of Antarctica in all its splendour. Listen out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve into sea. Take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of the pristine paradise of the splendid white continent. 

Days 10-11 Drake Passage Crossing

Enjoy a final morning landing in the South Shetland Islands before we re-enter the Drake Passage for our return journey to South America. 

With lectures and film presentations to complete our Antarctic experience, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the magic of the Southern Ocean and the life that calls it home. There is time for reflection and discussion about what we have seen and experienced. We hope you become ambassadors for Antarctica telling your family, friends and colleagues about your journey to this magical place, advocating for its conservation and preservation so that they might one day visit the region to experience what you have been lucky to see and do here.  

As we approach the tip of South America, our Captain may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, weather and time permitting. 

Day 12 Disembark Ushuaia

During the early morning, we cruise up the Beagle Channel, before quietly slipping into dock in Ushuaia, where we will be free to disembark around 8.00 am. Farewell your expedition team and fellow passengers as we all continue our onward journeys, hopefully with a newfound sense of the immense power of nature.   

On disembarkation, passengers on flights departing prior to 14:00 will be transferred directly to Ushuaia Airport, while those fortunate enough to be continuing their travels in this spectacular region of the world, will be transferred to their post-voyage Ushuaia accommodation. Passengers flying after 14:00 will have time to explore Ushuaia, prior to an afternoon airport transfer, the details of which will be provided onboard prior to disembarkation. 

Note: At the conclusion of the voyage, we do not recommend booking flights departing Ushuaia prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.

Led by experienced guides , you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit . 

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

What about beginners up to the challenge?

You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F.

Temperate regions

The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac. There are 26 places available in Antarctica and tropical voyages, 20 in temperate regions, South Georgia and all Arctic trips except in Franz Josef Land where the maximum is 16 kayakers.

Kayakers must be 14 or over.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in th e astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to share a kayaking place as we customise the kayaks and dry suits for each individual kayaker at the beginning of each voyage.

Required Experience & Fitness

This popular alpine activity is easy to learn. No experience is necessary – all you need is a willingness to try. All training is provided and our team of guides will have you trained and ready to go in no more than half an hour.

Participants should be confident in their footing and have an average level of fitness – outings may be up to three hours in duration. Those who enjoy hiking trails or taking long walks at home will possess enough fitness to enjoy this activity. As with any other activity, you will get more enjoyment out of it with some preparation in advance, such as long walks with uphill sections or bike riding.

The minimum age for this activity is 14.

Our highly-qualified guides have many years of climbing, skiing and snowshoeing experience and all hold relevant mountain instruction and safety certificates . They aim to provide a personalised and unique experience for every customer whilst maintaining safety to the highest standards. We have one snow shoeing guide for every 10 guests.

Our Outings

While we aim to get out as often as possible, the number of outings will be dependent on weather and our itinerary’s landing points. Equipment and Clothing Requirements

• Thick pair of socks and sheep wool inner soles
• Snow gaiters are optional

You should also ensure your insurance policy covers snowshoeing. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage. From alpine bowls and crevassed glaciers, to long open slopes, join us to summit and ski a range of Antarctic landscapes, venturing to some amazing wild and remote corners. A spirit of adventure is a must. After all, when you strap on your skis, you’ll be exploring places where few have ever skied before!

Required Experience

Our Ski/Snowboard Touring program requires a reasonable level of fitness and previous experience. The snow conditions will be varied and the terrain can be challenging at times. While you don’t need to be a back-country athlete to participate, and there are opportunities to develop skills during the expedition.

Below are the minimum ability requirements:

• Advanced level of skiing or snowboarding ability (ability to ski/ride in advanced terrain-black run resorts runs is required)
• Off-piste experience in a variety of snow conditions
• Previous touring experience is an advantage, but not essential (depending on your off-piste experience and overall ability)

Our guides can teach you the required touring skills from day one, as well as important mountaineering skills including ice axe and crampon use, roped glacier travel, constructing snow and ice anchors, assessing and moving in avalanche terrain, personal avalanche equipment and rescue, constructing emergency shelters, navigation and interpreting weather.

Fitness Requirements

You can expect to tour from two to six hours each day, some of which will include an ascent of a small peak or two. Participants must be fit and prepared for this activity. Ideally, you will have trained with outdoor carry packs, however uphill walks or riding bikes is also ideal for backcountry training.

You will enjoy your touring much more if you have prepared adequately. If you have any queries regarding your suitability or fitness please don’t hesitate to contact us. One of our mountain guides will be able to assess your ability and offer advice on training and preparation.

Group size is limited to 10 skiers in Antarctica and 8 skiers on the South Georgia Crossing, plus two guides.

Ski/Snowboard Touring Outings

Our highly-qualified guides have many years of climbing, ski and snowboard touring experience. Most of our guides have an extensive knowledge of the areas we plan to ski or snowboard. They aim to provide a personalised and unique experience for every participant whilst managing safety to the highest standards. Group sizes are limited to ten, with the average group size between 4 and 10.

Wind, Ice and Weather in Antarctica & South Georgia

You can expect to experience a variety of weather, from blue skies and sunshine through to snow, rain and grey clouds. The weather in some places can change extremely fast, ranging from sunshine to gale force winds. We usually begin our tours from sheltered landings, however wind and ice build up at higher altitudes may disrupt, change or cancel planned outings.

Travel insurance, including emergency evacuation coverage, is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. You will need to ensure that your insurance policy covers you for Ski Touring activity and related equipment. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage. How will i stay warm.

Your expedition team will advise you on the appropriate clothing to wear ashore and will provide you with a mat and thermal sleeping bag for your night out on the ice.

Is it safe?

Yes, we’ve taken hundreds of adventurous souls out overnight and our expert expedition team know where to find the best spots for your camping experience.

Will I sleep much?

Possibly not! Many passengers don’t camp out to sleep – they’re there to soak in the amazing surrounds, witness incredible vistas and enjoy the sounds of nearby penguin colonies and possibly even a calving glacier. We’ll do our best to make sure you get the chance for a cat nap the next day.

Will I get the chance to sleep under the stars?

Our camping trips take place in the middle of the Austral summer, and on the Antarctic Peninsula we’ll be experiencing almost 24 hours of daylight. This means that instead of a starry night, you’ll instead be treated to an extended sunset and sunrise as the sun briefly dips below the horizon, filling the sky with an endless palette of colours.

What should I bring?

Aurora Expeditions provides all the necessary equipment including a camping mat and thermal sleeping bag, so you only need to bring yourself. Please note: we don’t use tents for our camping experience. We believe that the experience is best enjoyed without blocking the amazing surrounds we’ve come to admire.

How do I book?

Camping is subject to weather, time and operational conditions. Places are limited to 40 campers on a first-come first-served basis, so early booking is encouraged. Inspired by their unwavering call to adventure, the couple Brave Gregg and Jax Gregg decided to take their honeymoon to the next level by traveling with us to Antarctica. Having always been huge fans of adventure, they wanted to find a unique way to celebrate their union that went beyond the typical honeymoon cliches. “We were originally going to opt for a relaxing beach somewhere,” says Brave. “However, we figured, what better time than now to go off the grid and experience Antarctica, a place that is relatively untouched by mankind!”

After being referred to Antarctica21 by their dear friends, they were convinced to book the journey and were even more thrilled when they realized they could fly over the Drake Passage entirely. Beginning in January, the couple set sail aboard Antarctica21’s Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise itinerary. This seven-night, eight-day journey immerses travelers in the wilds of Antarctica as they set sail between the South Shetland Islands and the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula , witnessing ice-filled fjords and wildlife like penguins, seals, and whales along the way.

“Spending one week in Antarctica lined up perfectly with our schedules,” says Brave. “It was the perfect blend of time to enjoy the ship and experiences to get out and see the Antarctic landscape.”

The couple traveled aboard the Magellan Explorer in a Deluxe Veranda Cabin, which has an expansive layout with a writing desk and even a balcony to view the landscapes and any passing wildlife. “When thinking of a ship cabin, we had in mind small quarters,” says Brave Gregg. “But to our surprise, there was plenty of storage for our luggage and gear. The bed was large and comfortable, and it was nice coming back from a cold expedition to a hot shower in a spacious bathroom.”

They experienced many highlights during their adventure, including witnessing nearly thousands of  penguins on a beach. “When approaching by ship, we could hear them from what felt like a mile away,” says Brave. “Once we actually arrived at the beach by Zodiac, we were surrounded by them — it felt like being on an alien planet with the cutest little creatures ever!”

They also enjoyed interacting with the expedition team and learning more about Antarctica’s history and how to conserve the landscape in the future. They especially loved the polar plunge. “The shot of vodka at the end was a nice touch, too!”

But most of all, one of their favorite moments to celebrate their honeymoon was in a quiet reprieve that Antarctica so greatly provides. “We stayed up late with a bottle of wine, and sat at the back of the ship to watch icebergs,” says Brave. “Since the sun doesn’t fully set, we got to watch what felt like a combined sunset and sunrise that lasted for hours.”

In the end, the couple’s main takeaway from their trip to Antarctica was that the Last Continent is like no place on Earth. “There is so much to still be learned about our planet and the life on it,” says Brave Gregg. “This trip is the perfect mixture of adventure and comfort, and it allowed us to unplug and be alone as newlyweds and also meet amazing people from all walks of life.”

Some ideas to think about if you're planning a honeymoon to antarctica....

An Antarctica honeymoon may, perhaps, not be the first destination you would think of when considering your trip of a lifetime but there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t! With luxury cruise boats, fantastic scenery and breathtaking wildlife; it has all the ingredients for a truly unforgettable experience and can easily be combined with a stay in Chile or Argentina.

On this page, we have tried to point out some of the key things to think about when planning a honeymoon to Antarctica:

The main thing to consider when thinking about an Antarctica honeymoon is how long you would like to spend on the cruise boat and whether you want to tie it in with a longer itinerary through Chile or Argentina. Most cruise boats leave from Punta Arenas or Ushuaia, so it’s very easy to add an Antarctica cruise onto a trip to Patagonia and other areas of Chile and Argentina. For those who want the Antarctica cruise to be the focus of their trip, then a longer cruise which takes in the Falklands and South Georgia is a good option. On the other hand, for those who are also keen to visit the highlights of Chile and Argentina on their honeymoon, then a short fly and cruise itinerary will allow you to include a cruise to Antarctica without it taking up the whole trip.

The second thing to consider when planning a honeymoon to Antarctica is how active you want to be. All cruise ships are equipped with a fleet of zodiacs and an on-board expedition team to help you make the most of landing and wildlife viewing opportunities. For those who are keen on their activities and adventure sports then there is also the option to opt for a cruise where kayaking, ice walking and camping out on the ice are also offered.

We would recommend staying on one of the smaller cruise ships as they can generally get passengers off the boat and into zodiacs more quickly, which results in longer and more frequent landings and more opportunities to view wildlife.

Picking a time to visit Antarctica is fairly straightforward as the season only runs from the end of October to the beginning of March, which coincides with summer in South America. December and January are generally the most popular months to travel to Antarctica, when the days are longest and the sunsets most spectacular. Nevertheless, visiting at either end of the season has it’s benefits, so it’s worth having a look at our When to go section for a breakdown of the different months.

If you have looked into the price of Antarctica cruises, you will know that they don’t come particularly cheaply. However, how much the cruise costs will ultimately come down to which boat you choose, how long the cruise is and on which date you travel, so it’s worth considering the points above to get you started. It’s also worth bearing in mind that lots of cruise boats will offer generous early booking incentives, which can help to bring the cost down.

If you’re looking for affordability, then some of the shorter fly and cruise itinerary will give you a taste of Antarctica without using up all of your time and budget. For those who want the cruise to be the main focus of their honeymoon, then most of the luxury cruise ships to Antarctica offer the same services as 5* hotels, with spas, fitness centres and top-class restaurants on board, meaning they’re more than adequate for a honeymoon trip.

We’re Spending our #Honeymoon on a 16-Day #Antarctica Expedition Cruise! @HurtigrutenUK @Hurtigruten

Most of our readers and especially those who have been with us since the beginning of our journey will know that it has long been our ultimate travel dream to take an Antarctica cruise. Finally, after more than two years of hard work travel blogging, that dream is coming true. We are going to spend 16 days of our 365-day honeymoon in Antarctica!

For our trip to Antarctica, we have been invited by Hurtigruten , one of the world leaders in Arctic and Antarctic Cruises, to join them on a 16-day expedition Antarctica cruise.

On December 7th, Kach and I will be setting sail for an Antarctica cruise with Hurtigruten, which will take us on one of their Antarctic expedition ships, MS Midnatsol , from Punta Arenas in the majestic Chilean Patagonia, through the magnificent Chilean fjords, then 500 miles across the Drake Passage to the great white continent itself!

Why are we so excited to join the Discover Patagonia and Antarctica Cruise with Hurtigruten?

There are many reasons why we want to travel to Antarctica, so here are just a few of them:

• One is that it is one of the few remaining refuges of pristine and unspoilt nature on the planet. There is no another place like Antarctica in the world, with its great towers of ice protruding from dark crystal waters and the inhospitable beauty that only a select few have the qualities and skills to survive in, none of them human!

• It is also incredibly difficult to get to, which makes it all the more alluring! The exact same reasons that explorers over more than one hundred years have made it their life’s work to get there are the same reasons we are attracted there today.
• The wildlife that lives in Antarctica is something that both Kach and I have dreamt of seeing in real life, having grown up addicted to watching wildlife documentaries! While the variety of wildlife in Antarctica is limited to species that can survive the extreme conditions, we’ll likely see several different types of penguins, albatrosses, different types of seals, and even the chance to see whales breaching the surface for air!

• Finally, Antarctica is the 7th continent of the world, so this incredible opportunity to join the Discover Patagonia and Antarctica Cruise with Hurtigruten will be a massive step forward in Kach’s dream to set foot on all seven continents!

What will we experience during the Antarctica Cruise with Hurtigruten?

Of course, as with any sailing voyage, the weather and other conditions day to day will determine our final route and schedule, but here is the planned itinerary so far.

16 Day Discover Patagonia and Antarctica Cruise – Provisional Itinerary

7th december – 15:00 – setting sail.

We’ll be getting up extra early for our early morning charter flight from Santiago de Chile to Punta Arenas. As soon as we have checked in and been welcomed aboard by the expedition team, we’ll be instructed in the ship’s safety procedures, followed by lunch on board the ship and finally settling into our cabins from around 16:00.

From the 7th to the 9th of December we’ll be sailing from Punta Arenas out through the Canal Gabriel, leading us into the Chilean fjords. The Chilean fjords offer some of the most incredible and breathtaking scenery on the planet. We saw a glimpse of the Chilean Fjords a couple of years ago as we travelled through Chilean Patagonia from Puerto Montt to Vila O’Higgins along the Carretera Austral , but what we did not get to see was the view of the southernmost Chilean fjords from the ocean, which we know is going to be spectacular. A true highlight of our Antarctica cruise at the very beginning of the voyage! On the way through the fjords, we’ll be sailing through the Garibaldi Fjord and passing the Garibaldi Glaciers!

10th December – Cape Horn and (hopefully) our first landing!

Our first chance to make a landing in one of Hurtigruten’s specially designed and purposed inflatable Antarctic ribs will be the infamous and beautifully deadly Cape Horn, is conditions allow for it.

11th December – Full Day at Sea

We will spend the whole day at sea as we cross the Drake Passage, the 500-mile wide body of water between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands, which will mark our arrival at Antarctica! We won’t just be spending all day staring out at the open ocean though (although I quite happily could!), as the MS Midnatsol will be showing movies all day, as well as scientific lectures on Antarctica and Antarctic Exploration. Of course, if we decide to take a break from all that awesomeness, there’s always a Jacuzzi outside on the deck!

12th December to 17th December – Antarctic exploration, landings, adventure and wildlife!

As soon as we arrive at the South Shetland Islands, the most exciting part of our Antarctica cruise will begin, with different landings planned for each day in Antarctica. The planned landings so far are; Half Moon Island; Deception Island; Neko Harbour; Almirante Brown; Cuvreville; Mikkelsen Harbour; and some alternatives depending on sea and weather conditions. We’ll tell you more about all of these places in another article very soon!

18th December to 21st December – Begin the Journey Home

Having spent 12 incredible days at sea with our Hurtigruten Antarctica Cruise, we will begin the final leg of our voyage back to South America. After another full day at sea crossing the Drake Passage in the opposite direction, we will again pass Cape Horn, maybe landing there if it was not possible on the outward journey.

On the way back to the Beagle Channel and the Chilean fjords we may have a chance to land at Puerto Williams, a small town facing the ocean with snow-capped mountains at its back.

On the final full day of sailing on our Antarctica Cruise, we will sail once again through the enchanting Chilean fjords, stop somewhere on the way to land and admire the magnificent natural surroundings.   This will also be where still full of the excitement and wonder of the experiences we have had; we will say goodbye to this beautiful landscape.

The following morning we will dock early at Punta Arenas, say goodbye to our new friends and crew, then leave the MS Midnatsol ready for the next stage of our journey.

Oh my goodness! What a vacation! This is just a dream vacation for me. Would love to experience exactly the same thing.

What an absolutely amazing experience to be able to share with your husband on your honeymoon! I am torn about whether I would like to go on a cruise like this as I do not want to disrupt the natural beauty of a place like this with too much tourism. I am also addicted to wildlife documentaries though and it would be an absolute dream to be able to see penguins and seals in real life!

It is so great. You are very lucky to have this opportunity. Antarctica is definitely a must visit and I am completely sold. Wish I could be a part of this cruise. All the best and have fun.

Due South: An Antarctica Honeymoon

When you think of a luxury honeymoon destination, does Antarctica spring to mind? Probably not. Remote, rugged and cold, it’s not exactly the stuff luxury honeymoon dreams are made of. Or is it?

For photographers Austin Mann and Esther Havens Mann , life is defined by extraordinary adventures. Austin is a travel photographer who spends time flying all over the world to test and review Apple’s latest products. Esther is a humanitarian photographer who works on social awareness campaigns in lesser-traveled areas of the world. Together, they have traveled all over the globe, so when it came time to plan their honeymoon, the destination had to be somewhere unique and unexpected.

Austin took the reins on planning with Esther’s only input:

“I don’t care where we go, as long as there’s a warm beach.”

and flew down to Argentina , where we connected with Quark Expeditions and caught a flight to Ushuaia, the southernmost tip in South America. From Ushuaia, we boarded the boat with 187 other passengers for 18 days at sea. Antarctica would be Esther's sixth continent to visit; for me, it was my final frontier.

It's common to see colonies reach more than half a million and the sound of 500,000 penguins honking is pretty surreal. South Georgia is a treasure that isn’t on many people’s radars, but if you are a birder, it’s the trip of a lifetime with an incredible diversity of birds from penguins to pipets.

your days are balanced on and off the ship. Morning excursions by zodiac with various land- and water-based activities can last up to four hours. We had lunch onboard the boat while it moved to another location, then we set off for another afternoon landing by zodiac. The boat's staff and guides are passionate about showing passengers Antarctica. Each guide has an expertise — a marine mammal specialist, penguin specialist, photographer, mountaineer or expert on glaciers — and gives afternoon lectures on their topic.

came two days after sailing from South Georgia when we reached Elephant Island, made famous by explorer Ernest Shackleton. Winds upwards of 75 miles per hour made it impossible to land so we had to wait until the next day to finally step foot onto Antarctica. Once on land, we spent the morning cross-country skiing and taking in the wildlife and views of the vast, white wilderness, icebergs, and sea ice. A cheeky penguin spent part of the excursion tobogganing next to us.

sea kayaking was a highlight of the trip for us. With only 15 people on the kayaking expedition, it was a tranquil, peaceful experience that offered a different perspective. We were silent for 10 minutes, taking in the sounds of ice falling, penguins honking and the ice floating bay.

on the boat, you can be fully present in the moment and take in the experience. Although there were 187 other passengers onboard, we were still able to grab alone time during quiet meals, in the sauna, while getting a massage or in the various places to take in the views from the boat. And while Antarctica might be an unorthodox honeymoon spot, a luxury adventure together with your new spouse is a special way to start off a marriage.

Invest in a pair of UV filtering glacier glasses. The leather flaps on the sides will stop the light from passing through and give you the best view of the Antarctic glaciers.
