Audley Travel introduces Rome as first short-haul destination

Audley Travel is to offer Italy from next year – its first short-haul destination.

The upmarket, tailor made specialist, known in the trade for Southeast Asia as well as India and Japan, said the move was a result of customer demand for the destination and said Italy would be “the first of many European destinations” it hoped to offer in future.

Chief executive Ian Simkins, who becomes a non-executive director next year, said: “You know Audley as a long-haul tailormade travel company but the exciting news is that we are going to be launching Italy, our first short-haul destination for our UK clients. Last year two-thirds of clients surveyed said they wanted Italy as a destination through Audley.”

The operator, which recently appointed former Tui UK managing director Nick Longman as chief operating officer, who will take over as chief executive from January, has produced a dedicated Italy brochure, featuring 12 sample itineraries.

Simkins said the focus would continue to be on offering travel expertise and immersive, personalised experiences in destination, whether it’s a truffle tour in Tuscany or training to be a gladiator at the Colosseum in Rome.

Other Italy product offered, from spring next year, will include meeting artisans in Florence and learning to cook like a local, hiking coastal paths on the Amalfi coast with an expert historian and botanist, and touring the boutiques of Milan with an expert shopper.

Head of product Alex Bentley added: “We won’t be going after the Rome city break market.”

The operator is also launching a raft of other new products for 2019, including reworked Route 66 itineraries, luxury itineraries in New Zealand and Australia and new accommodation in Cambodia.

It has also announced cruise will be a key focus for 2019 with new ships in Antarctica and French Polynesia.

There will be cruises offered on three new ships: Ocean Expeditions’ RCGS Resolute launching this year; Aurora Expeditions’ Greg Mortimer and Oceanside Expeditions’ Hondius, both launching late next year.

New experiences are also being offered, such as tours in China with an 83 year old guide who was one of the farmers who discovered the Terracotta Army.

The company has also pledged to reduce its plastic consumption by distributing branded, sustainable bottles for clients in resort. This will be trialled initially in 15 destinations.

Audley Travel, the UK's leading tailor-made travel specialist, is launching its first short haul destination – Italy. Ideal for clients who love history, art and the outdoors, tailor-made trips that are designed just for them are now available to book.

The move is a result of an increasing desire from UK clients to experience more destinations through Audley's tailor-made offering, particularly closer to home, with 66 per cent* saying they would like to travel to Italy with the operator if trips were available.

The Audley Way

Audley Travel's Italy specialists will develop clients' tailor-made trips using their first-hand knowledge (gained through either living in the country or travelling there extensively) of the best routes, guides, food, accommodation and local secrets to showcase Italy's lesser-known ways of life. The specialists regularly return to Italy to discover new hidden gems, stay in the accommodation and meet the guides as well as experience all the excursions and activities. This means that Audley can offer its clients a tailor-made service and enable them to experience a side of Italy that others might miss.

Audley's Italian Experiences

Audley's offering in Italy is split between three regions – 'Venice, Florence and Rome', 'Northern Italy' and 'Southern Italy', with carefully selected and stringently audited experiences available.

Venice, Florence and Rome

Any visitor to these three cities can find their way around the wealth of treasures on offer with the help of a guide book, but Audley believes in offering its clients the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the country and its people. With the help of expert local guides, Audley brings these historical cities to life, with examples including:

  • Venice - visiting a selection of authentic hidden bacaros (wine bars) in the backstreets of Venice's Rialto area with a local guide, taking private boat trips or secret walking tours around Venice, visiting hidden areas of the Doge's Palace or custom designing their own Venetian mask.
  • Rome – taking guided Vespa rides around Rome, touring the Vatican Museum after hours and enrolling in gladiator school.
  • Florence - meeting traditional artisans and learning to cook like a local.

Northern Italy

Audley's Italy specialists can offer revealing insights into the lesser-known attractions of the region and help clients see the major sights without the crowds. The art and architecture of Verona and Milan will of course be on the wish-list of many visitors, but Audley aims to take them beyond the obvious. For example:

  • Tuscan hills - truffle hunting with an expert and his dog
  • Milan - touring the boutiques with a personal shopper
  • Verona - enjoying wine tasting in the vineyards surrounding Verona
  • Italian Lakes – taking a private boat tour led by some of the region's finest guides
  • Liguria - hiking through terraces of vines to reach the tiny villages of Cinque Terre
  • Bologna – a gastronomy tour visiting small scale food producers
  • Piedmont – exploring the Barolo and Barbaresco wineries and hilltop medieval villages

Southern Italy

The private guides commissioned by Audley in Southern Italy are truly excellent at sharing the historical significance of the cultural sites such as Pompei and Herculaneum, as well as arranging for clients to visit these popular places at quieter times. Other highlights in the region include:

  • Sorrento - heading out with a local fisherman on his boat to catch dinner prior to a seaside dining experience
  • Naples – seeing the sights during a two hour walking tour, sampling some of the city's best street food and enjoying the impressive street art
  • Amalfi Coast - hiking along coastal paths with an expert historian and botanist
  • Matera – hiking around the cave churches set in the hills of Matera
  • Puglia – cycling around the city of Lecce

Travel Trends for 2022 from Audley Travel

Travel Trends for 2022 from Audley Travel

Bespoke travel specialist Audley Travel regularly conducts extensive research to ensure it is offering its clients exactly the range of options they desire for their tailor-made trips, which are designed for each client based on their budget, travel wish list and tastes. This is even more important as the world reopens, with travelers eager to make up for missed trips. From its research, Audley’s specialists have identified several trends in travel for 2022. Audley surveyed 1,446 people in April 2021. The respondents included people who have traveled, booked or inquired about trips as well as those who had expressed an interest in information from Audley.

Most popular destinations

The top destinations Audley’s clients will be visiting in 2022 are Italy, domestic US (with a majority of trips booked to Hawaii), Japan, Thailand and New Zealand.

Private lodging and facilities

As clients look to make-up for missed trips, Audley has seen a shift in the accommodation types that they request. From rooms and suites with private pools in Greece to exclusive use of safari properties in Africa, clients are asking for more space and private facilities as they book multigeneration family reunions or small group trips. The same trend is seen in Sri Lanka, with Audley responding to the increased demand for private accommodation with the launch of a portfolio of private villas on the southwest coast. In the Caribbean, private islands such as Jumby Bay, Petit St Vincent and Palm Island as well as hotels that offer separate villas, for example Bequia Beach Hotel, are proving popular.

A 10-day Private stay on Sri Lanka’s south coast costs from $3,995 per person (based on eight sharing) and includes transfers, accommodation and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/us/sri-lanka / 1-866-458-8170.

A seven-night stay in Palm Villa with a private pool at Bequia Beach Hotel , St Vincent and the Grenadines costs from $2,100 per person (based on four sharing) and includes transfers, accommodation and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/us/st-vincent-and-the-grenadines / 1-866-569-4753.

‘Beach plus’ itineraries – relaxation with exploration

As clients began to travel again last Autumn, Audley saw a steep increase in bookings for beach-only and single-center trips. These allowed clients to take a much-needed getaway, while keeping logistics as simple as possible. While these single destination trips remain popular with some groups (families, honeymooners and clients looking for a relaxing luxury break away in the sunshine), Audley’s specialists report an increase in requests for ‘beach plus’ and a return to more intricately designed itineraries for 2022.

While a typical Audley experience sees clients explore multiple destinations in one trip, a ‘beach plus’ itinerary is a first step back to this with clients enjoying a beach stay coupled with cultural touring experiences. It allows them to pack all their expectations for travel into one big trip without multiple border crossings. Many clients are choosing itineraries with a strong element of relaxation in nature away from the crowds, but teaming this with some immersive experiences that allow them to get to know the destination, and in turn take the first steps to the type of travel they love.

Popular destinations include Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui in Thailand, with touring options including a treetop elephant experience, Phuket food tour, cooking classes or a community cultural experience. The same growing trend has been seen in Kenya, where it is possible to fly direct from New York and experience both safari and beach within the country’s borders and avoid the associated Covid-testing complexities of flying to a second destination, such as Zanzibar, for the beach stay.

Audley’s Europe specialists have seen the same, with clients booking itineraries that give them time on a beach as well as some cultural experiences in the Algarve and the Greek islands.

A 15-day Luxury Kenya safari and beach trip costs from $14,275 per person (based on two sharing) and includes accommodation, transfers and safari activities. www.audleytravel.com/us/kenya / 1-866-424-1995

Luxury rail

Interest in travel by rail is growing, with 84 percent* of people surveyed by Audley earlier this year saying that they were ‘very’ or ‘somewhat likely’ to consider rail travel for their next trip. This has risen from 74 percent in July 2020. More specifically, the number of people who are ‘very likely’ to consider rail travel rose 53 percent from 15 to 23 percent during the same period.

Audley’s specialists in its programmes from Europe and Africa to Southeast and Central Asia and the US all report increased interest in luxury rail trips – both from existing product and new offerings. New opportunities to travel by luxury rail include Vietnam’s Vietage train between Danang and Quy Nhon, with semi-private seating areas for clients, three course gourmet meals, WiFi and a head and neck massage included. In Europe, the routing of Belmond’s Orient Express now includes Florence, Rome and Amsterdam, giving more options for clients. Canada’s famous Rocky Mountaineer now offer a two-day domestic route from Denver to Moab allowing clients to enjoy the views through oversized glass-dome windows, with breakfast, lunch and complimentary drinks served at their seats, with overnight hotel accommodation also included. In Russia, Audley’s specialists noted bookings on the luxury Golden Eagle train , traveling along the Trans-Siberian Railway, increased four-fold before the pandemic. This is set to continue as travel re-starts with strong interest for 2022 thanks to the train’s off-the-beaten-track routing and luxury experience.

An 18-day Luxury rail trip across Russia costs from $24,995 per person (based on two sharing) and includes transfers, hotel accommodation, 12 nights on the Golden Eagle and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/us/russia / 1-866-584-4337.

Who own Audley Travel?

Hold on to your hats, folks – Audley Travel is no mom-and-pop shop. It’s owned by the private equity firm 3i Group. After some to-ing and fro-ing, 3i Group became the proud parents of Audley Travel, taking the reins in 2015.

What’s the difference between tour operator and travel agent?

Talk about a case of “same same but different”! A tour operator is the maestro behind the scenes, creating those swanky travel packages we all crave. On the flip side, a travel agent is your personal travel guru, picking out the perfect trip from the smorgasbord the tour operators whip up.

What is the UK’s biggest travel agent?

If we’re talking big fish in the UK travel pond, TUI takes the cake. It’s like the heavyweight champion of travel agents over there, and with their colossal range of holidays, it’s easy to see why they’re numero uno.

Who is the managing director of Audley Travel?

Alright, let’s roll out the red carpet for Ian Simkins! He’s the head honcho, the managing director at Audley Travel, steering the ship since 2019. And by the looks of it, he’s been doing a bang-up job.

How long has Audley Travel been around?

Audley Travel has been taking the travel world by storm since way back in ’96. That’s over a quarter-century of making travel dreams come true – talk about staying power!

Who owns Audley End Estate?

Let’s step back in time – the Audley End Estate is a historical gem and, you guessed it, it’s in the trusty hands of English Heritage. They snapped it up to preserve a slice of good ol’ English history.

Is it better to use a travel agent or not?

Ah, the age-old debate! Some swear by travel agents for their know-how and insider perks. Others go DIY for full control and potential savings. It’s like choosing between grandma’s apple pie and making your own – both are sweet, but one’s a tad more personalized.

What are the 5 types of tour operators?

Imagine a pack of cards, only for travel. There are inbound, outbound, domestic, specialized, and direct sell tour operators. Each has its own trick for planning your perfect getaway – from local jaunts to exotic adventures!

How do tour operators make money?

Tour operators make the moolah by buying in bulk and selling at a profit. Think of them as travel wholesalers, slicing and dicing costs, then serving up vacation packages at prices that’ll have you reaching for your passport.

What travel company is best?

The best travel company is like asking for the tastiest ice cream flavor – it’s all about personal taste! However, companies like TUI, Expedia, and Booking.com often get the thumbs up for their vast array of options and top-notch service.

Do Audley do group tours?

Right, so Audley Travel’s more about tailoring dream trips for you and yours alone. They’re big on personalization, which means group tours aren’t really their jam. Instead, they’re the maestros of custom, private travel itineraries.

Which travel agency is the best?

Best travel agency, you ask? It’s like picking a favorite star in the sky – there are a bunch of shining examples! But, for savvy service and seamless planning, names like American Express Travel, Expedia, and Flight Centre often pop up in chatter.

Who is the chairman of travel?

Drat, it seems we’ve got a bit of a mystery on our hands – the title of “Chairman of Travel” isn’t a one-size-fits-all hat. Each travel company’s got its own king or queen of the castle, making waves and calling the shots.

Who is the managing director of Travelzoo?

Hold onto your boarding passes – the captain of the Travelzoo ship, their managing director, fluctuates by region. But for a slice of their pie, you’d want to check in with their latest financial reports or press releases to see who’s currently navigating their global escapades.

Who is the CEO of Travel Incorporated?

The CEO of Travel Incorporated is a hotshot named Lou Moran. He’s been playing his cards right in the corporate travel world, ensuring your business trips are tip-top and trouble-free.

Who owns Audley End Railway?

All aboard! The Audley End Miniature Railway is a quaint family affair, owned and operated by the Cambridge family. It’s a charming little pitstop where nostalgia hits you like a steam train.

Who owns travel group?

Travel Group is an umbrella term, so there’s no one-size-fits-all owner here. Various entities own different travel groups, from big-time private equity firms to travel enthusiasts with a vision. It’s a mixed bag, so you’d need to be more specific to find out who’s got the keys to the kingdom.

Great Personalized Travel

We worked with Jack Tydeman, Southeast Asia Senior Specialist and he and his assistant were just as great as the trip. This was a family trip and as we planned we added more people and they were very accommodating to all our needs. They offered a great payment plan to make the trip easier to manage and not have a hugh credit card bill with interest to pay after the trip. lol The trip was seamless and flowed without any issues.

Audley planned our perfect adventure!

We asked Audley to plan our once-in-a-lifetime adventure to South America for us to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Our seven-week adventure exploring Peru (including Machu Picchu) and Ecuador could not have gone smoother or been any more perfect. The agency (shout out to travel planner Jasmine Scott for her excellent eye for detail) booked us in the perfect hotels and on the most amazing tours, including a six-day trip on a 16-passenger yacht called the Solaris to explore islands in the Galapagos and a four-day float on the riverboat Anakonda down the Napo River to check out the Ecuadorian rain forest. The guides who met each flight, and the private drivers who chauffeured us around both countries, were absolutely amazing. We will definitely be using Audley again to plan our next grand adventure to Australia, New Zealand and Tazmania!

Date of experience : December 19, 2023

Hi Laurel Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Firstly, congratulations on your wedding anniversary, what a way to celebrate it! It sounds like you had the most memorable time, and we are delighted to hear how well Jasmine and the team took care of everything for you. We'll make sure your kind comments are shared with the team, and look forward to sending you away on your next big adventure. Best wishes Audley Travel USA

Audley did a fantastic job

Audley did a fantastic job! They were able to plan what I think was a pretty complicated trip to several destinations with five adults! We had two Specialists; one who did the Iceland part of our trip, and the other who did London, York, Edinburgh and also arranged flights from Edinburgh to Berlin, then Berlin back to the United States. They both absolutely listened to what we wanted and did a great job in suggesting private tours along the way, and spent enough time with us to be able to tweak our vacation and answer any questions. Although almost everything went according to plan, they were available to help us out in York when our hotel mistakenly had us staying for one night instead of two. Melissa quickly solved the problem for us personally. I can't say enough nice things about Melissa for doing such a remarkable job for us on our 17 day adventure!

Hi Karen We truly appreciate the time you've taken to share your experience with us. It sounds like Melissa and the team crafted together an unforgettable trip for you all - what an adventure! We look forward to helping you with your next dream Audley trip, and will make sure your kind comments are shared with the team. Wishing you the best Audley Travel USA

Peru and Galapagos

We have just returned from a trip to Peru and Equador organised by Caroline from Audley UK. The holiday was absolutely fantastic, probably our best ever. The itinerary was logistically quite complex as we wanted to fit in as much as possible. From start to finish everything ran like clockwork and the service of the local agencies used for guides and drivers was top notch. The attention to detail from Caroline meant that we had no worries about anything, we could just concentrate on having a great time. This is the second time we have used Audley (South Africa being the first) and would certainly recommend.

Dear David Thank you for taking the time to share your great feedback with us. We're delighted to hear how well Caroline and the team looked after everything for you - it sounds like you had an unforgettable time away! Great Customer Care

I signed up for Trustpilot just to write a review at how great this company was to work with even though I did not end up booking my trip through them. Both associates I dealt with were fantastic at their jobs. They were very knowledgeable, articulate and were genuinely excited in helping my wife and our family plan a trip. I dealt with Jenny R. and Kristine K. Wonderful girls who couldn't have been more helpful.

Date of experience : April 06, 2023

Hi Tim Thank you for taking the time to share your kind comments with us. We're delighted to hear how well Jenny & Kristine looked after you throughout. Although we are saddened that you didn't book with us on this occasion, we truly appreciate your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to Audley in the future. A Great Travel Partner

I would Highly recommend Audley travel agency . I used Audley for my 30th anniversary trip. Our Representative Ms. Samantha Rubin did an awesome job of preparing our trip to Italy in a way that met all our needs. Our trip was well organized and our hotels were topshelf. We plan to book another trip with Ms. Rubin and Audley.

The best in travel

A shoutout to Jason Toms, Audley Travel. Many travel companies offer decent canned itineraries, but few, if any, offer the expertise and personalized service of Audley. We were fortunate to have Jason Toms plan our 3 week trip to India that was perfect in every way. Jason is Audley’s India expert who has traveled extensively in the country. He customized the itinerary based on our preferences and provided valuable suggestions for the best hotels and activities. His experience, attention to detail, responsiveness, and care gave us confidence from the start and provided an exciting, seamless planning process. Last year he planned another trip for us to Israel-Jordan-Egypt that unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the war in the middle east. Jason then helped us create another exciting trip to Kathmandu and Bhutan that we are eagerly looking forward to. For anyone planning a trip to India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Egypt, or the Maldives, be sure to contact Jason Toms for the best possible trip. You will be forever grateful.

An excellent adventure to SE Asia

We partnered with Audley on a 3+ week trip to SE Asia. They listened well to where we wanted to go, what we wanted to do and our special interests and developed an excellent, well-paced itinerary. The trip was virtually flawless, with great properties and excellent guides and drivers. Can recommend them without reservation.

Attention to detail

Our specialist, Annie Arthur, was wonderful to work with and helped make our time in Italy special. We really appreciated how attentive and thorough Annie was. She was on top of things, answered all our questions and had lots of good suggestions. It was a pleasure to work with Annie! The activities that she coordinated were all great, as were the people that we dealt with during those activities.

We recently had a post-cruise trip in Australia suggested by Peter Boll. Though we ended up not doing it for various reasons, Peter was very professional, with a good sense of humor. My sense was that he would go to great lengths to provide an above average experience.

Excellent job in planning…

Thora did an excellent job in planning our trip. She listened to what we wanted to do and see on the trip and came up with an excellent itinerary.

Date of experience : February 02, 2024

Hi Ronald, Thank you so much for taking the time to share these kind words with us. We are so happy to hear that Thora took the time to listen to what you wanted out of your trip, and used that to create your dream itinerary! We have already shared your kind words with Thora. While you ultimately did not book your trip to South Africa, we hope that we can assist you with your next big adventure! Best regards Audley Travel USA

Disappointing Travel Specialist

Audley clearly has the resources and contacts to help weave your trip together. In my instance, I needed to make some minor changes to my trip which included one excursion cancellation. Instead of receiving help I received an email admonishing me to stay with my itinerary or else there would be cancellation fees. I was literally badgered by the specialist. I have never been spoken to in this manner and am (obviously) still smarting from this treatment. I don't know how this may help others except to say "caveat emptor".

Date of experience : October 01, 2023

Dear Scott, We regret to learn of your dissatisfaction, as this falls short of the exceptional service standards that Audley strives to uphold. We have informed our Client Services team and they will be in touch with you soon. Sincerely, Audley Travel USA

Gold standard of excellence!!!

Jason Toms and Lynn Macaluso were absolutely PHENOMENAL in providing outstanding customer service as we explored possibilities of a Sound of Music/Austria trip. The referral from Audley team member Jason to Lynn was seamless and timely, perfect in every way. We are extremely grateful to Jason and Lynn for their time and expertise. Throughout the entire process, they were both simply amazing. We felt heard and understood as Lynn, the Austria specialist, incorporated our wishes and priorities into her proposed itinerary. On this, our first interaction with Audley, Jason and Lynn left us with a lasting impression of the very highest standard of excellence and team work set by this company in all aspects of travel. Audley is very fortunate, indeed, to have these two outstanding members on its team. Thank you!

Hi Traveler, Thank you so much for sharing this phenomenal review of your experience with Audley Travel! We are so pleased to hear that Jason so seamlessly introduced you to Lynn, and that Lynn took the time to create an itinerary around your wishes and priorities. While you ultimately decided not to book with us, we are happy to hear that both Jason and Lynn provided such outstanding customer service. We will make sure to pass on your kind words to both Jason and Lynn. We look forward to helping you plan a new trip when you are ready to travel! Best Wishes Audley Travel USA

A TRAVEL AGENCY THERE WHEN YOU NEED THEM

As a well traveled individual, I don't normally use a travel agency, but boy am I glad I used Audley. My travel companion and I booked a trip to Vietnam we decided to use an agency because of the language barrier. We were booked at a beautiful 5 star resort and our 1st day there my friend fell at the resort and fractured her hip. We knew we need to get her back to the states the problem was coordinating our health and travel insurance. Audley immediately had their people there and their duty officer in Boston working to facilitate her being evacuated to a level 4 hospital. Audley was beyond fantastic, they were in communication with the entire time. Luckily we were able to air ambulance her to Bangkok International Hospital within 72 hours of her hospitalization. Unfortunately they would not allow me on the ambulance and I was super concerned she would not have anyone with her in Bangkok. But Audley made sure one of their agents meet her at the hospital. We had a 10 person e-mail chain that continued until she made it home to Los Angeles. I have never seen a travel agency do as much as Audley. I will only be using them in the future. In fact I have already started the process to secure a trip to Thailand for November 2024 with Audley ( we are calling it our revenge tour, LOL).

Date of experience : January 11, 2024

Hi Patsy, We are so sorry to hear about your travel companion falling and fracturing her hip and hope that she is making progress with her recovery. We are glad that our duty office, as well as our partners in Vietnam, were able to support you both during such a stressful time. We have shared your kind words with your specialist Claire, as well as with our duty office. We are honored to be helping you two plan your revenge tour of Thailand! Best regards Audley Travel USA

Let Audley take you to Egypt and Jordan!

This trip to Egypt and Jordan was so well planned and executed! Our representatives, guides, and drivers were really knowledgeable and made every place we went better than if we went on our own! Really made our “trip of a lifetime” come to life!

Date of experience : October 26, 2023

Hi Terry Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We are delighted Jason and the team went above and beyond to make sure you had a trip of a lifetime - it sounds like you had the most amazing time exploring Egypt & Jordan! We'll make sure your kind comments are shared with Jason, his leadership team and our partners in Egypt & Jordan too. Best wishes Audley Travel USA

Abandoned by Audley

The tour guides were excellent. My wife left her purse on the bullet train from Kyoto to Tokyo with our passports. With only 2 1/2 hours to catch our flight to Hawaii, we were desperate for some Japanese-speaking help. I called the Audley emergency number and reached the local rep. She refused to help at all, telling us we needed to contact lost and found ourselves.

Date of experience : October 28, 2023

Hi Dale, We are sorry about the situation you encountered due to your wife's purse being left on the train in Japan. As communicated when we reached out in response to your review, Audley does have a Duty Office staffed 24 hours of the day with managers who are trained to assist in these situations. We are truly sorry to hear that upon calling our partner's local number, you reached someone from their office who did not provide the level of service we expect would be provided to our clients. I would like to confirm that we have taken all of your feedback into consideration to ensure we uphold the standards that we at Audley hold ourselves to. In addition, we have passed the details of your experience to our partners in country to investigate the situation. We are happy that a local guide booked through Audley was able to help resolve the situation. You have the direct contact for our Client Experience Executive who has been responding to the situation. Please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can do to further support you. Best regards Audley Travel USA

Fantastic experience

We had a fabulous experience planning our Botswana safari with Hailey Landers at Audley. She is professional, proactive and a great listener and collaborator. She presented us with options that aligned perfectly with our travel style and budget. We could not have been happier with our trip! In addition, I must mention that when we had a potential hiccup caused by a medical issue, the manager on duty at Audley in the UK was immensely helpful. We felt very fortunate to have the Audley team there for us.

Date of experience : June 06, 2022

Dear ABN Thanks for reaching out and sharing your kind comments with us. We are thrilled to hear how well Hailey has taken care of everything for you and how well the Duty Manager resolved your query whilst away. We look forward to working with you again in the future and to send you away on your next dream Audley vacation. Best wishes Audley Travel USA

Egypt: A Very Well Managed Trip

We have just returned from an eleven day trip to Egypt covering Lower and Upper Egypt including Abu Simbel and a five day Nile cruise. I had requested my country specialist for a couple of hotels we wanted to stay in, the Mena House in Cairo and the Old Cataract in Aswan. Excellent rooms were arranged in both these hotels as well as the Cecil in Alexandria (suggested by our country specialist), which turned out to be delightfully atmospheric. The Sonesta cruise ship was superb both in service, accommodation and food and lived up to its billing. The tour leader who was assigned to us was the very best and took care of all the admin throughout our stay. He was with us in Cairo and Alexandria and was always available on WhatsApp when we were up country. All the little details I had requested, like restaurant bookings for my wife’s birthday, were taken care of. In addition the local representatives arranged for all on the spot restaurant bookings and transfers. The Guides and the transportation throughout were of a very high order and little touches like the VIP service through immigration on arrival at Cairo were very thoughtful. We had planned this trip for the year before but had to defer it by a year at the last moment due to a medical emergency. Our Country Specialist arranged for the whole trip to be pushed a year ahead at no extra cost. This was out third trip with Audley and all have turned out to excellent. A special thanks to Jason, our Country Specialist, who was a fount of knowledge on Egypt, gave excellent advice telling us both what and what not to do and accommodating all of our special requests.

Hi Gautam, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback on your recent trip to Egypt with us. We are delighted to hear that you had such a wonderful experience exploring Lower and Upper Egypt, including Abu Simbel, during your eleven-day journey. We are thrilled to learn that the accommodations at Mena House in Cairo, Old Cataract in Aswan, and Cecil in Alexandria exceeded your expectations. It is fantastic to hear that the Sonesta cruise ship provided exceptional service, accommodation, and food throughout your Nile cruise. We are especially pleased that our tour leader was able to provide top-notch assistance and ensure all administrative aspects were taken care of seamlessly. It is heartening to know that all the little details and special requests were handled with care, including arranging restaurant bookings for your wife's birthday. We appreciate your kind words about Jason, your Country Specialist, who went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly despite the unexpected delay due to a medical emergency. We look forward to welcoming you back on another adventure in the future. Thank you once again for choosing Audley. Many thanks, Audley Travel UK

Barcelona - Spring 2024

We had a fantastic family vacation in Barcelona thanks to the attention and care we received from Eric Carnes. Eric was genuinely interested in our family dynamic and was able to assist us with creating unique opportunities for our time together while experiencing Barcelona. We asked for many unique amenities from customized architectural tours to securing sporting event tickets. He was even able to accommodate our big ask of being in the middle of city in a multi-bedroom apartment with all of the perks of staying in a high end hotel. We highly recommend Audrey Travel and Eric Carnes.

We have already shared your feedback with Eric and his manager. We cannot wait to help you plan your next big adventure! Kind regards Audley Travel USA

Audley Great in Exotic Locations

We just got back from a trip to India and Bhutan. This is our 2nd trip with Audley and we would definitely use them again. They have excellent partners (both Audley and local partners) and we felt well taken care of. The trip was well organized and Jason did a great job in keeping us in the loop. My only feedback would be it would be great to see a more itemized bill - you just get one lump sum. But in locations that are difficult or out of the ordinary (like Bhutan) I would definitely go with Audley.

Date of experience : March 09, 2024

Hi Matthew, Thank you for taking the time so share these kind words about your recent trip to India and Bhutan. We are so happy to hear that Jason was so communicative throughout the planning process! We have passed your feedback to Jason, and will make sure our partners in India and Bhutan know how much you appreciated them. We look forward to helping you plan your next great adventure! Kind regards, Audley Travel USA

The planning for our trip was flawless

The planning for our trip was flawless. Drivers were always on time and uniformly helpful. Hotels were unique--not the usual chains--always lovely and well located. Guides were beyond amazing--knowledgable about history, architecture and art as well as warm and engaging. I can't say enough about Audley's travel services. It was great experience.

This was our first experience using a travel agent to plan a trip for us. It was a trip of a lifetime, and we are ready to do more. We went from Perth, Australia on the Indian Pacific Railway to Adelaide. From there we drove the Great Ocean Road through Port Campbell and down to Melbourne. We then flew to Sydney before returning home. Our highlights were Rottness Island, Winery Tour, Kangaroo Island, Grampians National Park, Pinnacle, Mackenzie Falls, Boroka Lookout, Phillip Island Wildlife Expedition (including the Penguin Parade), Lanes and Arcades Tour in Melbourne, and Sydney Harbour Long Lunch Cruise. Anthony was thorough in talking with us about what kinds of excursions and tours we were interested in doing on this trip. He was there to assist us before, during and after this trip.

Hi Connie, Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with this wonderful feedback. Jason Toms put together a trip of a lifetime…

Jason Toms put together a wonderful trip for my husband and I. Everything went perfectly. Everyday was a highlight. If I could pick one it would be the houseboat in Alleppey. It was a fabulous experience and the food was superb. Overall, there was a nice assortment of different types of accommodations. Our drivers Nagandra and Unni were just wonderful. The pace of the trip worked well for us. It was a great way to see India, we were lucky to be traveling alone, more local people talked to us so that was extra special. You put together a perfect trip for us, Thank you so much!

Once in a lifetime trip to Iceland

Audley travel organized a wonderful trip for my family of 7 to Iceland. We had fantastic, knowledgeable guides to help us get the most out of our experiences in this gorgeous country. We were basically taken care of every step of the way from arriving at the airport to being driven back. Our agent, Julia Mole was responsive to our requests and constructed the perfect trip for us. We really did have a once in a lifetime trip to Iceland including Northern Lights, Ice Cave, Lava tube, Highlands SuperJeep tour, black beaches, geysers, geothermic pools, many beautiful waterfalls, finding the elusive Arctic Fox ,and even seeing an erupting volcano (that we were able to get pictures of on our way back to the airport). We had a very happy group of travelers.

Hi Lynne, Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with this wonderful feedback of your time in Iceland. We are so happy to hear that Julia was able to assist you in putting together the perfect trip for you and your family! Of all the amazing experiences that you had, we would love to know – was there one that stood-out above all of the rest? We have already shared your kind words with Julia, and will make sure to pass your feedback along to our partners in Iceland who helped deliver such a memorable trip! We look forward to helping you plan your next great adventure. Warmest regards, Audley Travel USA

Fantastic trip

My wife and I just returned from a fantastic trip to Agra and Rajasthan. Our trip creator, Jason Toms, put together an itinerary nicely balanced between urban and rural experiences. The rural sites allowed us to interact with locals in non commercial settings that weren’t possible in the urban settings. Throughout the process of creating the trip, taking it and upon our return, Jason listened, was very attentive and supportive, and was easily reachable. We can’t thank him enough for our very special trip. This was our second positive experience with an Audley planned trip. The local support and guides helped make the trip a pleasant experience. We look forward to working with Audley again.

Hi Chris, Thank you so much for taking the time to share this feedback. Our Japan trip was to be a trip of a lifetime

Our Japan trip was to be a trip of a lifetime. Once we paid our full trip cost we heard nothing though Asha From Audley said we would talk more about details of trip three weeks out. Three weeks came and we get an email Asha had a wedding to go to and then she will be in Korea. Long story short run from this agency. Asha built us an itinerary for a 30 year old we are in our late 60’s and 80’s. It’s sad when a trip of a lifetime is ruined by greed!

Dear Jan, We are truly disheartened to learn about your experience. We are sorry to hear about the service you received from us - this is undoubtedly not the high standard we hold ourselves to. Rest assured, a member of our Client Experience Team will be reaching out to you as a matter of urgency. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We are committed to resolving this issue promptly and ensuring your concerns are heard. Best wishes, Audley Travel

Veronica at Audley created a seamless…

Veronica at Audley created a seamless and fascinating experience in Cambodia and Vietnam. The highlight was the interaction with local guides - not just their knowledge but their life stories, their personal warmth and concern. I want to particularly cite Nara in Siem Reap and Hau David in Hoi An. Nara cared for us as would have for his parents. Hau found services and restaurant tables we never could have found for ourselves. Each was always available and always a pleasure to be with. Like Veronica herself.

Travel in India with Confidence…

Just returned from a two-week trip to India -- Golden Triangle and a brief visit to self India. Overall the experience was first-class. To begin with, Audley’s US India tour manager was responsive and informative on all points both before and during travel. Audley’s pre-trip package is very complete and valuable to the traveler. Audley city office staff were consistently present at all key moves and hand-offs during the trip. The drivers provided a high level of confidence in difficult circumstances. The guides were well-informed and solicitous -- and able to calibrate the pace to fit our needs. The selection of hotels was excellent – both the new ones and the interesting “legacy properties -- and the prices were reasonable. Of course, standards of service would be considered “pampering” by US standards. Altogether, Audley provided a fantastic experience!

Hi Stephen, Thank you for sharing this fantastic feedback about your recent trip to India. We just returned from a trip to Spain…

We just returned from a trip to Spain through AudleyTravel. It was excellent our second booking with them. . I cannot recommend it more highly. I would never again use anyone else. We had two different agents because of the promotion of our first gal, Jay Drasich, who was great and then Maggie McCarthy took over. Maggie was friendly , easy to deal with, very professional. We were a special case because of a family medical situation. We had to cancel the first booking and reschedule it for a year later only to reverse it all over again. AudleyTravel, first Jay and then Maggie were all wonderful with this. They were so accommodating. The trip itself was wonderful. Every person , the drivers, the guides, the local contacts were first rate. Our guide Yolanda at the Prada gave a master class in art history. We learned so much and it made the whole experience more meaningful. That was true of all the tours we took. We loved the hotels , their locations, everything. This is the way we love to travel, independently, but beautifully supported in every way. As older travelers we didn’t have to get up early and take a bus with a lot of folks we might not have wanted to be with. We had our own itinerary, the things we wanted to do and see at our pace on our schedule. Maggie was with me every step of the way, planning, answering questions. She prepared me so well that when yet another medical situation came up I knew what to do and all went smoothly. This is a first class company with first class agents. With that kind of service you might think it is outrageously expensive but as I was referring Maggie to a friend she asked about cost and when I told her she said, wow that is very reasonable. I am just sorry I didn’t find AudleyTravel earlier. Our first trip with them to Hawaii was also fabulous. Thank you, AudleyTravel!

Date of experience : March 17, 2024

Hi Sherry, Thank you so much for your incredibly kind feedback. We are so happy to hear that both Jay and Maggie were wonderful to work with, and that Maggie was so accommodating when you needed to cancel and rebook your trip due to a medical concern. It sounds like you had an incredible experience full of incredible experiences! We have already shared your amazing praise with Jay, Maggie, and the members of our 24 hour emergency line that you spoke with while traveling, and will make sure to pass along to our partners in Spain. We cannot wait to help you plan your next grand adventure! Best wishes Audley Travel US

The best luggage for Italy travel in 2024

This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

Choosing luggage for Italy travel can make or break your trip. While some destinations allow for larger sized luggage, Italy may not be the place to take your biggest case – no matter how much shopping you think you might do. Trust me, after 30+ trips I’ve learned this the hard way.

Whether you’re visiting Rome, Venice or the Amalfi Coast, you want your luggage to work for, not against you. In this article, we share how to choose the best luggage for your Italy trip and give you some ideas of brands and models to consider if you’re looking to buy new cases or bags.

Our pick of the best luggage for Italy travel for 2024 includes a selection of carry-on and check-in luggage that will secure your belongings but be easy for you to manage.

We’ve also included a list of things to check should you want to bring your own luggage plus some bonus packing tips. So let’s get started.

Article contents

Best luggage options when packing for Italy

You first need to decide if you will check a bag or travel carry on only. I wouldn’t try to do all three as pictured above. This will come down to personal preference and budget.

Your trip to Italy will probably include train travel, walking some distances on cobblestones, up steep hills (hello Positano!) and over bridges (ciao Venice!) with your cases. Older style hotels and AirBnBs may not have elevators and porterage services are not common at train stations and certainly not in small villages like those of the Cinque Terre.

Many people swear by packing carry on luggage only, even for an extended 3-4 week trip.  If you plan to move around a lot during your trip, and prefer to walk or use public transportation to transfer to your hotel, traveling with carry on sized luggage is a good choice. The same applies if you are visiting places with tough terrain with lots of steps like the Cinque Terre or Positano on the Amalfi Coast.

I prefer to check a medium sized checked bag, especially if we are mainly visiting cities, because it gives me more options. We also use taxis to get us from airports and train stations to our accommodation and tend to stay at each destination at least 3-4 days, so the size and weight of bags is not as critical.

If you find it easier to carry weight on your back then consider bringing backpack style luggage. This also has the advantage of allowing you to travel hands-free.

But, here’s the thing, no matter what type of luggage you take, you need to be able to carry or pull it for at least short distances.

Luggage Options For Carry-On Only

Here are a few handpicked carry on luggage options for your trip to Italy. This luggage needs to be sturdy as well as spacious and you’ll need to be very disciplined with your packing. We looked for lightweight, durable cases at various price points.

The Carry-On by Away

The Carry-On by Away is a stylish case with a hard polycarbonate shell and handy ejectable portable charger for your phone. Weighing only 7.1lbs [3.2kg], this classy suitcase is both light and economical on space. It’s well within the flight regulations for carry-on luggage, and even comes with its own TSA-approved combination lock.

Its most useful feature is the handy compression system that aids space utilization and the separate laundry bag for your dirty clothes.

With its 360-degree spinner wheels making for easy turning, you’ll find pulling this bag along to be both smooth and quiet. Included with the Carry-On are a black leather name tag, and stylish leather finishings.

The Carry-On comes in lots of different colors and has a matte finish.

Size: 21.7” x 13.7” x 9” / 55.1 cm x 34.8 cm x 22.9 cm

Samsonite 20″ Omni

Samsonite is one of the leading and most trusted luggage brands in the world. They’ve been providing customers with high quality luggage for years, and the Omni lends itself as another great example of their craftsmanship.

Weighing only 6.8lbs [3.1 kg], the Samsonite Omni spinner is compact, yet spacious. Its light polycarbonate exterior makes for a lightweight yet still durable shell.

With its nylon lining and 20-inch interior, it has larger than average packing space for those looking for a carry on to fit more than a few days’ worth of clothing. The Omni’s spinner-style wheels make for easy turning and 360-degree mobility.

Also comes in an expandable version though this may need to be checked if used.

Cabin Max has come up with a great utility bag for your Italian luggage. Simple and uncomplicated, its dimensions and multiple compartments make for great space utilization.

The Cabin Max Metz is a lightweight backpack, weighing only 1.5lbs [700g], and has a relatively large surface area. This bag provides a good balance between size and weight.

This is a useful backpack for ease-of-access and lightweight travel.

  • Designed for comfort

  • No stomach or chest straps
  • Not well-suited for longer journeys due to size

The Bigger Carry-On by Away

The Bigger Carry-On is, as its name implies, a bigger version of Away’s Carry-On case reviewed above. It’s everything the smaller counterpart is, with more space. The manufacturers meticulously tested this luggage to make sure it fits in overhead luggage bins on most airlines after they noticed they could hold a bigger case.

It weighs only 7.4lbs [3.3kg]. Size-wise, Bigger Carry-On has 47-litres of space, and with its 360-degree spinner-style wheels, you can expect easy mobility. It meets the airline requirements for most major airlines as carry-on luggage.

The Bigger Carry-On offers a compression system that’s great for space utilization. So, along with its TSA-approved lock, your luggage will stay compressed and protected.

Included is an ejectable portable charger, a hidden laundry bag, and the ever-popular, elegant polycarbonate outer shell. It’s conveniently sized, durable, and stylish to boot.

Size: 22.7” x 14.7” x 9.6” / 57.7 x 37.3 x 24.4 cm

  • Durable outer shell
  • Big enough for longer travels
  • Extra size makes it more difficult to carry
  • May fall out of flight regulations – consider before buying
  • 360-degree wheels may jar on bumpy/uneven surfaces

Thule Chasm Carry On

The Thule Chasm Carry On is a weather-resistant, durable carry on size with over-sized wheels making it smooth to pull – great addition to your Italian travels.

Weighing a light 3.2lb [1.45kg], with 40L of space, a wide mouth opening for easy packing, a large mesh pocket for dirty clothes/shoes and a zip pocket for small items to be found quickly – all mean it can be a great, long-lasting travel companion.

  • Smooth to maneuver
  • Handy internal max fill marker (23cm/9″) indicates airline carry-on compliance
  • Limited lifetime guarantee
  • Handle is shorter than some other options
  • Hard shell on one side only – may need to pack delicate items carefully

Checked-in luggage Options

For those going on a longer trip or wanting to bring back extra souvenirs, these medium-sized suitcases may suit you better. Make sure to choose a lightweight design and don’t pack very heavy items as you may need to lift and carry it.

Wheeling a suitcase this size across the bridges of Venice could be a bit tricky, and I recommend taking a water taxi to your accommodation or staying close to the train station in this situation.

The Medium is a stylish, sleek and spacious suitcase. Its 68.8L compartment space and lightweight design make for a great check-in option.

With its sound-proof, 360-degree spinner-style wheels making for smooth maneuvering, you won’t even notice the extra weight inside. This case can also be pulled on 2 wheels which is a big plus when navigating cobblestones.

Its polycarbonate shell and TSA-approved combination lock will keep your luggage well protected. The Medium’s neat leather finishings, internal compression system and hidden laundry bag complete an all-around great suitcase.

I have this case and it meets all my requirements. I love the separate zip section for loose items and at 9.9lb [4.4 kg] it is easy for me to move and carry.

  • Internal compression system
  • Removable separate laundry bag
  • Potential to be overpacked due to roomy interior

Weighing only 8.34lbs [3.8 kg], it’s lightweight yet incredibly spacious. You can be assured that the micro-diamond polycarbonate shell will keep your valuables safe, along with the included TSA-approved combination lock.

With the four 360-degree wheels taking the weight off, you won’t even notice your luggage load as you wheel it along.

The 110L capacity is perfect for fulfilling your luggage needs on longer trips. This luggage has two over-sized wheels that makes for easy and durable movement on more uneven surfaces such as cobblestones. The e xternal compression straps mean you can adjust the bag size – perfect for adding capacity to fly back with your Italy souvenirs and purchases.

AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner (24-Inch)

AmazonBasics’ 24-inch Hardside Spinner is not only economical, but it is also great for protecting your valuables.

The case comes with a neat 150D-polyester interior, with dividers, to add an extra layer of protection. Although spacious already, if you’re needing more room the suitcase can expand up to 15%.

Size: 18.3” x 11.4” x 26.7” / 46.4 x  28.9 x 68 cm

  • Convenient size
  • Bulky and inconvenient
  • No built-in lock

Considerations for choosing your luggage for Italy

Italy has unique characteristics that may not be obvious to the first-time visitor. Here are some important things you should consider when choosing luggage for your trip to Italy.

Know the Italian terrain

Italy’s cities, towns and villages are paved with narrow cobblestone streets and founded on notoriously hilly landscapes. Rome itself is known as the “City of the Seven Hills”. And remember that Venice has over 400 bridges. When you’re tired and in an unfamiliar place, the last thing you want to do is drag heavy bulky luggage across bumpy streets.

If you’re headed to the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre regions consider you may need to negotiate hundreds of stairs with your bags. This can challenge even the fittest of travelers.

Understand trunk sizes and limitations

If driving , you should be aware that trunk space and taxi limitations for luggage allowance, are smaller than in the States. Cars and taxis are generally more compact and you may find it difficult squeezing large cases in the trunk. This is important if you want to keep your luggage safe and away from opportunistic thieves.

Luggage on trains in Italy

Though there are no luggage restrictions for train travel , many stations do not have elevators or porter services to help you with your bags. You may need to carry them up and down stairs. If you travel from Naples to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train you need to get to the train platform via several flights of stairs.

Security conscious travelers may want to keep their bags close by when on the train.  A carry-on will easily fit in the overhead racks or between seats but larger items will need to be stored away from you near the entrance to the carriage.

As most visitors will make at least one intercity trip by train, consider how you will manage your bags when deciding on the type of luggage for your Italy vacation.

Prioritize durability and weight

In Italy, you will likely find yourself storing your suitcases amongst other tourists’ bags either on trains, hotels or as part of a tour group. Having robust luggage during these times is wise as a measure to protect the items within. But, make sure it is not too heavy so you are able to carry your bags when required. As a general rule, the lighter the luggage the better.

General things to know before you choose your luggage

Here are some more general guidelines for choosing luggage that suits you.

Know your baggage allowance

When buying your luggage, you’re going to have to consider whether or not it fits international flight regulations . Most airlines have very strict baggage restrictions with excess baggage charges applying if they are not met.

Unless you are flying first class on a premium airline, make sure you are aware of your allowances in terms of number, size and weight of items allowed on board. For example, ITA airways states that you can take one item of hand luggage (no more than 55 cm in height, 35 cm in width, and 25 cm in depth including handles, side pockets, and wheels) weighing up to 8 kg, plus one personal item such as a laptop on board. Your checked bag can weigh up to 23kg, unless on Business Class in which case up to 30kg.

Suitcase or backpack – choose the style that suits you best

Be realistic about your travel plans, budget , and capabilities. If you will need your hands free to navigate with your map or phone while you walk, consider choosing a wheeled backpack that gives you the option to pull or carry.

I much prefer to wheel my luggage, plus I have narrow shoulders so hauling a backpack is never comfortable for me. Also, I find clothes tend to get crushed inside a backpack.

Comparing hard shell versus soft case

A hardshell suitcase is great for durability. You’ll have peace of mind knowing that whether your luggage is going in the overhead compartment or into the cargo hold, it’ll be well protected.

The hard shell luggage will protect your belongings but is not the best choice for flexibility. In comparison, the soft-shell suitcases afford more room to squeeze into. They adjust to a smaller space, are more flexible, easier to carry about and are usually lighter.

Comparing Two Wheels versus Spinner Style

Another decision point is whether you’re looking for a two-wheel bag or a spinner-style one.

If durability and robustness are two traits you like in luggage, then consider going with a two-wheeled bag. Two wheels offer more durability and noise-reduction. The wheels are generally tough and durable.

The spinner-style four-wheeled luggage is great for those looking for stability and 360-degree movement. The four wheels are, however, more suited to flat, even surfaces.

Tips and tricks for packing for Italy

Once you’ve chosen your case you’ll want to think about packing. Here are a few tips and tricks to help ease the preparation stress and make the most of your luggage when in Italy. You can also read our tips on packing for Italy for a more detailed look at how to pack for your trip or listen to our packing tips podcast episode .

1.   Plan your travel outfits

As much as you want to pack light, you’re heading to one of the most fashionable countries in the world. So, planning some of your outfits to fit your itinerary will keep you prepared as well as save you a lot of space.

Use the rule of 3 – make sure you can use each item in 3 different outfits, choose 3 colors so everything coordinates and take 3 pairs of shoes as an absolute maximum.

2.   Organize your luggage for convenience

Make use of packing cubes to better utilize space within your luggage. Pack more, in neater spaces, so you can fit your items in a smaller bag and find things easily. It is no exaggeration when I say that luggage cubes have changed my traveling life.

3.   Learn airline luggage regulations

Luggage regulations, such as size and weight, are important to know. They can vary from airline to airline, and you’ll need to know and comply with them if you wish to avoid a hefty fine.

To make sure you’re always prepared and within your limits, measure your bags before you leave. This will make sure you’re well within your limits. You can also take along a portable luggage scale just to ensure you will never have to worry about your bags being overweight.

4. Plan to do laundry

One mistake many travelers make is to pack for every day they are away. Instead, make use of local laundry facilities or hand wash your items and save yourself the clothing space. These laundry sheets are great for easy packing and make for super-convenient washing.

5. Ship your purchases

You don’t need to worry about saving space in your luggage for all your shopping. If you want to bring back some of that famous Italian wine, limoncello, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, most wineries and farms will ship your goods home for you. Let shipping handle it and save yourself the space. It’s very reliable and less likely to get damaged.

Hopefully, now you’ve found the perfect luggage for your travels to Italy. If you’ve taken our advice you’ll be packing your gear like a pro into your durable lightweight case or bag and are ready to conquer the cobblestones of Rome. Buon viaggio!

Compare Italy's art cities: Venice, Florence & Rome by Audley Travel vs Seductive Southern Italy by Culture Trip

Compare details and see what other travelers are saying.

Day 1 Venice

 Venice

On arrival you will be met by your guide for a private boat transfer to your hotel. The journey will take thirty to forty-five minutes, passing through the lagoon and along the famous Grand Canal. The rest of the day is free to settle into your hotel located right in the heart of the city and just steps from St Mark's Square.

Day 2 Venice

Today you will have a private guided tour of St Mark's Basilica and the 15th-century Doge's Palace. You'll be able to go behind the scenes and uncover the hidden chambers where the Doge administered the republic as well as visit the Bridge of Sighs.

Day 3 Florence

 Venice ,  Florence

Departing by private water taxi you'll head to the train station for your journey to Florence. You will have premium class tickets for this two hour journey. Upon arrival in Florence a private driver will escort you to your hotel. In the afternoon you may want to take some time to explore the stunning Piazza del Duomo, home to Florence's iconic Renaissance cathedral. If you are feeling energetic, it's possible to climb both the bell tower and the dome for wonderful views of the city.

Day 4 Florence

 Florence

This morning you have a three hour private guided walking tour around Florence, visiting the beautiful Santa Croce Basilica as well as the Accademia to see Michelangelo's iconic 'David'. The afternoon is free to continue exploring at your leisure. You may want to take a lunchtime stroll along the banks of the Arno or while away the afternoon in the fascinating Bargello Gallery.

Day 5 Florence

Today you have a full day at leisure to relax or explore more of this fascinating city at your own pace. In the morning you may want to cross the Arno and visit the Pitti Palace and stunning Boboli Gardens and in the afternoon you can explore the ornate Medici Chapels, home to some beautiful Renaissance treasures.

 Florence ,  Rome

Your driver will take you to the train station in Florence for your premium class train journey to Rome, which will take around two hours. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, you'll have the opportunity get your bearings in Rome with a privately guided tour of the city by car and on foot. This evening tour includes key sites such as the Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain.

Today step back in time today to 80 AD when and the building of Rome's most famous landmark, the Colosseum, was constructed. Skip past the lines and enjoy direct entry into the landmark, where your private guide will explain the significance of the Colosseum during the Roman era. The Roman Forum, the heart of Roman public life, is just next door so you'll visit this vast site with your guide afterwards. This afternoon is unguided, but to stick with the Ancient Rome theme we recommend heading to Capitoline Hill and Trajan's Column, which are both easily accessible from the Forum.

This morning you have a privately guided tour of the Vatican, including St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and of course the Sistine Chapel with its beautiful ceiling by Michelangelo. As you may expect this will be one of the busiest sites you visit on your trip so afterwards you will have a well-deserved afternoon break to relax.

Today visit the beautiful masterpieces housed within the Borghese Gallery with your private guide. After the museum, your guide will take you to the Santa Maria del Popolo Church, home to some incredible works by Caravaggio and Bernini, before ending your tour at the Spanish Steps. Spend your final afternoon at leisure, soaking up the wonderful atmosphere of Rome.

Day 10 Return home

Today you will be transferred by private driver to the airport for your flight home.

Day 1: Arrive in Naples

Accommodation: Hotel Palazzo Salgar

Activities Included: Welcome dinner

Touch down in Naples and make your way to the hotel where you’ll be greeted by our Local Insider, who will accompany the group throughout the trip. At 6pm, join your fellow travellers for a welcome drink. Later on, head out for a three-course Neapolitan meal together – an ideal opportunity to get to know each other. After that, you might be tempted by a nightcap in a local bar – otherwise head back to the hotel for a good night’s rest ahead of your first full day.

Day 2: Join a street food tour of Naples

Accommodation: Hotel Santa Lucia, Minori

Activities Included: Naples street food tour

Learn all about the history of Neapolitan food and its importance to the city culture on a street food tour. Naples is of course synonymous with pizza and pasta, but there are many other local specialities such as sfogliatelle (a flaky, shell-shaped pastry typically filled with sweetened ricotta) and aubergine parmigiana (aubergine baked with layers of tomato sauce and mozzarella), which are well worth trying. Explore the city at leisure in the afternoon before taking a private transfer to the Amalfi Coast – your next stop.

Day 3: Cruise along the Amalfi Coast

Optional Activities: Amalfi Coast private boat tour

Today, the choice is yours. You could embark on a private boat tour of the Amalfi Coast to explore one of the most alluring stretches of coastline in Europe – or take the public ferry to either Amalfi or Positano and spend the day as you wish. Think pastel-coloured fishing villages set against the backdrop of dramatic cliffs and forests overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Whether you want to swim, relax on the beach or wander leisurely around the streets and piazzas of these picturesque villages, you won’t be short of options. Return to Minori in the evening.

Day 4: Explore the winding streets of ancient Matera

Accommodation: Corte San Pietro

Activities Included: Matera walking tour

Today we cross into the Basilicata region to reach Matera – known for its ancient hillside cave dwellings in the Unesco-listed Sassi area. Weave your way through the narrow, winding streets on a guided walking tour and discover why it was crowned 2019 European Capital of Culture. You may well recognise it from the latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die.

Day 5: Cycle through the Itria Valley by e-bike

Accommodation: Cala Ponte Hotel

Activities Included: Alberobello guided tour, Locorotondo visit, Itria Valley e-bike tour

You’ll continue eastwards into the Itria Valley – a particularly scenic part of the Puglia region. Marvel at the extraordinary trulli (traditional limestone dwellings with conical roofs) on a guided tour of Alberobello, and navigate the labyrinth of whitewashed alleyways and piazzas in Locorotondo, often regarded as one of the most photogenic towns in Puglia. Keen cyclist? You’ll also have the opportunity to hop on an e-bike and glide through a dreamy patchwork of olive groves and vineyards. Refuel with lunch in Locorotondo before heading to Polignano a Mare on the Adriatic coast – your home for the next two nights.

Day 6: Relax on the beaches of Polignano a Mare

Today is yours to spend as you wish. After a leisurely breakfast, why not head into the old town and soak up the laid-back atmosphere with a coffee in the main square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II? If you fancy catching rays, pack your beach towel and sprawl out at Lama Monachile (also known as Cala Porto), a secluded white-pebble beach sandwiched between craggy cliffs and bordered by a Roman-era bridge. As evening rolls in, make your way to the Pietra Piatta or Balconata sul Mare for wonderful views of the town and Adriatic Sea.

Day 7: Visit the Castellana Caves and taste Puglian olive oil

Accommodation: Arthotel & Park Lecce

Activities Included: Castellana Caves visit, Olive oil tasting & Ostuni walking tour

Wave goodbye to Polignano a Mare as you travel down the heel of the Italian boot to Lecce. Your first stop is at the Castellana Caves for a guided tour of karst chambers 70m (230ft) underground. You’ll then continue to Il Frantoio olive farm where you can taste the area’s famed olive oil from the source, before visiting the nearby hilltop town of Ostuni, nicknamed La Città Bianca (the White City) for its whitewashed buildings. Here, you’ll enjoy a guided walking tour followed by lunch at a masseria (traditional Puglian farmhouse).

Day 8: Explore Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca

Activities Included: Otranto private tour, Santa Maria di Leuca private tour

Your day starts with a guided tour of the Salento peninsula – the southernmost part of Puglia, home to some of the best beaches in Italy and baroque towns. First, you’ll be shown around Otranto, a city that bears strong Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Norman architectural influences; highlights include an 11th-century cathedral with an elaborate mosaic floor and the Aragonese Castle. It’s then time to explore Santa Maria di Leuca, known for its hilltop lighthouse and the Basilica De Finibus Terrae. Bring your camera to these vantage points to capture panoramic views of the town and coastline, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas merge.

Day 9: Admire the extravagant architecture of Lecce on a walking tour

Activities Included: Lecce walking tour & Farewell dinner

Begin the final full day of your southern Italy adventure with a walking tour of Lecce, nicknamed the Florence of the South due to its honey-coloured baroque churches and palaces, with elaborately decorated façades, dotted throughout the old town. Spend the rest of your day at leisure, exploring independent craft shops, street cafés and cosy wine bars, as well as a superb selection of authentic Puglian restaurants. Come nightfall, cap off your trip with a memorable farewell dinner in the company of your fellow travellers.

Day 10: Depart from Lecce

It’s time to bid farewell to your new friends as your trip comes to an end. Check out of the hotel and make your way to Salento Airport to catch your flight home – or choose to extend your stay and experience what else Italy has to offer.

I can't fault Audley…

This is the 2nd time we have used Audley Travel as we were so impressed with how they planned our first holiday with them. Charlotte was our specialist for our latest Borneo trip and planned the most fantastic trip for us. Everything ran seamlessly from start to finish. I have other friends that have used Audley Travel and they also have had excellent experiences with them.

Our trip to Thailand "the land of smiles" was fabulous

Our Thailand trip was fabulous. With expert guidance from Saskia at Audley we visited golden temples, ancient ruins, vibrant markets (even one on a railway line!) and a variety of stunning landscapes. The smell and taste of Thai street food and fruit beyond imagination. The music of the rainforest- gibbons, birds and cicadas calling. The serenity of the hill tribe people. The poignant Burma Railway sites and the most beautiful cemetery. Fantastic tea tasting. Getting up close and personal with gorgeous elephants. Staying in a lovely selection of boutique hotels. I unhesitatingly recommend visiting "the land of smiles" Thailand with Audley to tailor the trip to your individual needs.

Date of experience : 14 April 2024

Very poor customer service

Booked to go to Japan many months ahead and very excited. Unfortunately our specialist rep left and her replacement was not very efficient. She promised things, calls that never materialised. I booked with them because I suffer from anxiety and wanted all the stress taken away. Her inefficiency left me stressed before we left. We missed our flight connection due to late departure and we were abandoned. No help during a weekend. Lost paid for trips and tickets as no rep. would rearrange to meet us. Now trying to claim compensation and constant stalling. Yet again booked phone calls not received. Japan is wonderful by the way but not the experience I was expecting from Audley.

Date of experience : 21 March 2024

Dear Julie, We were deeply saddened to learn about the challenges you faced during your trip to Japan. Your feedback is incredibly important to us, and we are committed to addressing your concerns and providing the necessary support. To assist us in better understanding your situation, could you please send us an email with your contact and trip details to [email protected] We are dedicated to resolving this matter promptly and ensuring that you feel supported every step of the way. Your experience does not align with the high standards we strive to maintain at Audley Travel, and we genuinely regret any disappointment you may have experienced. We eagerly anticipate receiving your email and working towards a positive resolution. Kind Regards, Audley Travel

New Zealand Trip of a Lifetime…

The New Zealand trip had been on our agenda pre Covid and we used Audley to help plan our self drive itinerary. Our agent, Amy, listened and understood what we were looking for and offered knowledgeable advice based on her personal experience. She came up with a planned route which pretty much perfectly matched our brief. The support information pre-visit and during the trip was excellent, taking away any anxiety about where we were headed next. Fabulous service and fabulous holiday.

Australia Adventure

Just excellent service from beginning to end :-planning the trip, securing all the flights and hotels, and preparing the itineraries and information packs. Invaluable background information was much appreciated as well as a 24 hour help line when risk of war in the Middle East caused airline schedules to be revised.

Date of experience : 23 March 2024

Exceptional

We had a fabulous experience using Audley travel to arrange our honeymoon. We had Suzi look after us who was very knowledgeable, easy to chat with and understood exactly what we wanted to get from our trip. From our first enquiry to getting back home, the level of care and attention was exceptional. We really felt looked after. The trip was so well organised and lifted a lot of the stress we sometime experience when we have organised our own trips in the past. We received a gift box ahead of our trip with thoughtful items related to our destination and we received a professional looking itinerary to take with us. We would highly recommend using Audley and will not hesitate to go with them for our bigger trips in future.

Another fantastic holiday organised for us by Audley - this time to Greece

We have just got back from an amazing holiday in Greece seeing all of the best ancient sites. We knew from our previous trips to Canada, Costa Rica and India with Audley that the whole trip would flow seamlessly with brilliant guides, excellent drivers, and with Audley and their local agents to fall back on if anything went wrong. This trip was such a complicated itinerary, but our team of punctual, calm and reliable drivers, and the excellent guides ready and waiting at each site we visited, made sure all ran like clockwork. We would highly recommend Audley and would like to say a big thank you to their excellent and enthusiastic Greece expert, Lyta Blake, who organised this trip for us.

Date of experience : 05 April 2024

We will be sure to pass on your praise to Lyta, our Greece expert, for her excellent organization and enthusiasm in planning your trip. We look forward to helping you plan more unforgettable adventures in the future. Many thanks, Audley Travel UK

Superb, for once you do actually get what you pay for!

We were recommended Audley Travel by friends who had used them for their honeymoon in South Africa. We went to Thailand and Audley excelled. Our expert Anna was exactly that, great recommendations, wasn’t phased by our requests to tweak our arrangements and the 3 weeks went without a hitch. 99% our our experience was fabulous, and the 1 element we found slightly amiss was out of Audrey’s control. I had always wanted to go to the floating markets of Bangkok but did not agree with the use of drugged slow lorises for the purpose of tourist photographs. This was discussed with Anna on our return and I was assured as a company that focuses on high animal welfare, this option would be addressed. The standard of our transfers, hotels and experiences was superb. Our two highlights were Anantara hotel with both the elephant experiences in The Golden Triangle and The Sarojin hotel in Khao Lak; just exceptional. Will definitely be using Audley for future trips.

Date of experience : 02 March 2024

Hi Susan, Thank you for sharing your fantastic experience with Audley during your trip to Thailand. We are pleased to hear that our expert Anna provided you with great recommendations and that you enjoyed your time at Anantara hotel in The Golden Triangle and The Sarojin hotel in Khao Lak. Your feedback on animal welfare is important to us, and we will ensure that it is taken into consideration for future trips. We are excited to plan your upcoming adventures with Audley. South Africa March 2024

Our first experience with Audley travel, from a short conversation on what our travel likes and dislikes are to a full on video call within a week. Robyn Hutchons had put together a brilliant itinerary for our big trip. We didn't change a thing and signed up there and then. The attention to detail, materials (that app) and communications make everything smooth. Thank you Audley, we will be back. Tim and Jeanette

Date of experience : 04 March 2024

Booked a Cape Town, Garden route and safari holiday with Audley Travel Started by finding out what we wanted to do and hearing all the great ideas the SA specialist (Andy Freeman) shared with us to then designing the holiday day by day with a perfect itinerary Audley ticked all the boxes. Great itinerary , tailored holiday.

South Africa boutique style

We decided to book a trip to South Africa but didn’t know where to start. After engaging with a specialist Andy Freeman at Audley, the process was so easy and relaxing. A few calls with Andy, great questions to know more about us and what we wanted from the trip and presto we had an itinerary designed just for us. Each of our places we stayed were boutique with amazing service, our movement from Cape Town to Zambia then to Rockfig Game Reserve went without a glitch and Andy even checked in with us during the holiday- if you are thinking of an adventure give Andy a call and I’m sure he can design one of the most amazing life trips you could wish for.

6 Week New Zealand and Australia Holiday

We’ve been on an amazing 6 week trip to New Zealand and Australia, arranged by Amy Waters, who has been brilliant from our first telephone conversation to our catch up call after our trip and all the emails and phone calls in between, all our flights, hotels, various trips, car hire and transfers have been exceptional, we wanted a trip to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary and my 60th birthday, and this was a trip of a lifetime, Amy listened to what we do and don’t like from a holiday and tailored it perfectly to us. We can’t thank Amy enough for all her help, also Audley as a company have been fantastic, when I contacted the UK office from Australia, for some advice they were brilliant. Amy even helped our daughter arrange a Mothers Day surprise to be at our accommodation in New Zealand. We would definitely recommend them, and will certainly book to travel with them again in the future.

Hi Rachel and Mark, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your recent 6-week trip to New Zealand and Australia. We are thrilled to hear that Amy provided exceptional service from start to finish, ensuring that every aspect of your holiday was tailored perfectly to your preferences. It's wonderful to know that this trip was a special way to celebrate your 40th Wedding Anniversary and 60th birthday. We are delighted that you found our flights, hotels, trips, car hire, and transfers all exceeded your expectations. Your kind words about Amy and our company as a whole mean a lot to us. We are pleased that we could assist with the Mother's Day surprise for your daughter as well. We look forward to creating more unforgettable experiences for you. Many thanks, Audley Travel UK

Classic Costa Rica

We had a great time in Costa Rica based on the Classic Costa Rica tour - communication at home was excellent and usually by phone which made things very personal. My only complaints are that we changed flights in Miami for which we needed an ESTA, which was mentioned in our written itinerary but not mentioned in communications, so we had a last minute panic getting this sorted. Also, our detailed itinerary was given to us by the ground agent in the taxi from the airport to our hotel when we arrived after a 22 hour door-to-door journey, which wasn’t ideal! This could have been done before we left the UK. Also, because we made a few changes/additions to the standard tour, some trips were not necessary. This could also have been addressed beforehand and given us a little more free time. Other than this the organisation, hotels and service were excellent.

  23. Review of my Italy trip: it was disappointing : r/travel

Unlike anything I've ever experienced—the history, the architectural beauty, the natural beauty, the food, the vibes. 10/10 no notes but the way people talk about italy I kind of expected to feel this way about most of the trip (not just one, relatively small and fairly random town in Basilicata) Florence: perhaps the most disappointing of all.
