Getting to Bacardi Distillery

Driving there: If you have a rental car and prefer to drive, take PR-22 west out of San Juan for about 3 miles to the Cantaño exit, Road 165.  Drive approximately 2 more miles (you’ll see the plant in the distance off to the right) and turn right at the Intersection with Road 888, at the Bay View Industrial Park in Cantaño.  Turn left at the Bacardi entrance and continue for approximately 1/2 mile to the visitor parking lot.

Taxis to Casa Bacardi Rum Distillery:   There are plenty of taxis in the tourist areas of San Juan, it is about a 25-minute ride.  Always ask the price and agree upon it before getting into the taxi.

Ferry from Old San Juan –  You may take the ferry from Old San Juan to Cataño, it is a small ferry boat mostly used by business commuters and is low cost.  After arriving in Cataño, there should be taxi drivers at the ferry terminal that will take you to Casa Bacardi.  Be advised that at times the ferry may be late or unreliable depending on weather, boat mechanical conditions, and availability.  We recommend you buy the tickets in advance and arrive at least an hour in advance, so you can double-check if the ferry is running on time, if you encounter any issues, you will still have the option to take a taxi to Casa Bacardi.  We recommend you take a taxi to avoid any inconvenience.   More information on the Cataño / Old San Juan ferry

The Bacardi Distillery Tour in Puerto Rico

Serge Melki / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY 2.0

You don't need to be a fan of rum to enjoy touring Casa Bacardi in Puerto Rico , the largest rum distillery in the world . With three tour options, you can learn all about the history of the Bacardi family, learn how to taste rum, and even take a cocktail-making class.

Bacardi History

Bacardi has been conducting tours since 1962, an almost 50-year tradition of showing visitors their factory. Bacardi's founder was Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, a Spaniard who emigrated to Cuba in 1830. He and brother José learned to filter rum through charcoal to remove impurities and age it in oak barrels to give it its smoothness.

Facundo's son, Emilio, was a politician, author, and eventually the mayor of Santiago de Cuba, but it was his brother-in-law, Enrique Schueg, who was the architect of Bacardi's international growth. Schueg began rum production in Puerto Rico in the 1930s.

Today, Bacardi continues to be a family business, now in its fifth generation. They continue to be, as Enrique labeled the spirit, "The Kings of Rum."

The Showroom and Secrets

Perhaps the most entertaining part of the tour is the interactive exhibit room where you'll find a recreation of Bacardi's first distillery, heirlooms, and photos from the past, and rum displays that let you sniff your way through different varieties and blends of the spirit.

You'll also learn some of the steps that go into making rum: the two types of fermentation, the best types of rum for sipping vs. mixing, and even what Bacardi does with the byproducts of rum production.

How to Book a Tour

There are many tour companies that sell tours to Casa Bacardi and for cruisers in San Juan for the day, this is one of the most popular excursions. Note that if there is a cruise ship in town the day you intend to visit the distillery, you might be run into some crowds. Many tour companies will also combine the distillery visit with a day tour of the city, so that could be a good option if you're short on time.

It's also possible to book directly on the Bacardi website , where you'll have the choice of three different tour types.

  • The Historical Tour is a 45 minute tour of the visitor center and includes a welcome cocktail at the Bat Bar. This is the most basic tour and best for those who are just looking for quick look-see at Casa Bacardi.
  • The Rum Tasting Tour lasts 75 minutes and includes a welcome cocktail and a guided tasting of six different kinds of rum.
  • The Mixology Class includes a welcome cocktail, plus the three cocktails you will learn how to make yourself in the class. The class lasts approximately 75 minutes.

Bottle Your Own Bacardi

Casa Bacardi also offers the opportunity to purchase and bottle your own bottle of rum with a personal engraving. The experience includes a bottle of Bacardi's Special Reserve Rum, which can only be purchased at the Puerto Rico distillery, a nice box to store your bottle, and a photo of you and your bottle in front of the barrel you poured it from. The most fun part is sealing the bottle with Bacardi's signature red wax.

Casa Bacardi is the largest rum distillery in the world, producing the most popular and heavily awarded brand of premium rum. It’s a popular day trip for the more than 1 million cruise ship visitors that land in San Juan’s port every year, though it’s easier and cheaper to visit on your own.

Rum has become synonymous with the Puerto Rico thanks to its famous drink, the pina colada. In fact, there are a handful of rums that make up “ Rums of Puerto Rico ,” an organization meant to highlight the centuries-old distilling process and showcase local rums of the island, including Bacardi.

The other distillery you can visit is Hacienda Santa Anna, associated with the rum Ron del Barrilito . Bacardi is better known, however, and the tour has a lot to offer guests, from historical facts to a special reserve rum only available for sale at the factory.

Whether you’re a tourist or a local, I highly recommend a visit. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip to Casa Bacardi.

About the Casa Bacardi and the Bacardi Factory

Casa Bacardi sign outside the factory

Bacardi was originally founded by Facundo Bacardi Masso in the late 1800s. The brand originated in Cuba but established distilleries in Puerto Rico and Mexico in the 1930’s.

Today, the factory in Cataño, Puerto Rico is the largest premium rum distillery in the world and is located about 20 minutes from Old San Juan. It’s easily accessible by Uber, taxi or rental car. Public transport isn’t great in Puerto Rico so I wouldn’t advise it.

The factory was christened by the governor of Puerto Rico as the “Cathedral of Rum” in 1958. It’s also the only place in the world where you can buy their special reserve rum, sold for $85 a bottle. As a cool bonus, you can fill and seal the bottle yourself. This makes a great souvenir for any spirit lovers in your life.

Bacardí ages its rum for a minimum 1 year, and for up to 16 years. It’s the wood of the barrels that gives the rum its aroma, color and flavor. After 16 years the barrels are retired and used for fertilizer or compost.

Rum is a distilled spirit, with charcoal filtering the alcohol. The different types of labels are made by blending different ages. For instance, the distillery adds water to the blending and brings it down to 80 proof, which is 40% alcohol per volume.

Fun fact: Bacardi also makes beer, but it’s currently only available in the Florida markets.

History behind the Bacardi logo

Bacardi Factory building

The fruit bat that has become synonymous with Bacardi has a story behind it. Facundo’s wife, Amalia, saw fruit bats in the family’s warehouse when they were first starting the business.

Traditionally, bats were considered a symbol of good luck (this was pre-Twilight series). Amalia knew this was a sign and that the bat was meant to be the symbol of Bacardi, and an essential element of the family legacy.

The bats were intended to ward off misfortune. They also turned out to be practical, helping the process along by pollinating sugar cane and eating any bugs that threaten the crop.

Today, the Bacardi bat is one of the most recognizable product logos on the market.

Hours of operation at Casa Bacardi

Rums lined up at the bar at Casa Bacardi

The factory is open daily from 9am to 4:30pm, with tours starting and ending at 9:15am and 4:15pm and running about every half hour. The factory tour takes roughly an hour total, and you’ll have some time upon arrival to sit and enjoy your welcome drink before you’re called for your visit. It is open-air and has a comfy seating area.

This is a nice place to hang out on a sunny day, with several staged photo opps available for guests, and there’s no limit to how long you can stay after your tour is over. There’s also an affiliated vendor selling coco locos , rum drinks served in a carved coconut to help put you in a tropical state of mind.

It’s recommended that you book tickets ahead of time to make sure you get the time slot you’re looking for, but it’s not necessary. They take walk-ins as they come, you’ll just have to wait for the next available tour. They also accept credit cards here.

RELATED POST: TAKE A FOOD TOUR OF OLD SAN JUAN

Price of admission

Gallons for aging the rum decoratively displayed at Casa Bacardi

There are 3 different experiences available. The most basic is the historical tour of the factory which lasts about an hour, costs $15 and includes a free welcome drink. Options include popular drinks like a mojito, Cuba libre, daiquiri, tropical sunrise and more. This is the best deal in the Caribbean!

There’s a slight upcharge for high-end drinks, and you can pay for additional beverages beyond your first free one if you’d like. Note that payment is not accepted at the bar — you buy a drink token at the cashier and exchange it at the bar for your beverage.

Sometimes people get upset because the cruise ships overcharge them for this experience, asking for $50 or more. If you can get to the Bacardi Factory on your own, there’s no need to do this as a group excursion since they take care of everything when you arrive.

The other two options are to take a rum tasting tour for $50 or a mixology class where you make your own cocktails for $60. Both of these experiences are 75 minutes long.

Know before you go

Selection of rums at Casa Bacardi bar

There is free parking on site. It’s recommended that you arrive a half hour early to allow yourself time to take pictures and enjoy the complex before your activity of choice. There’s also a gift shop at the end with different bottles and souvenirs if you’re looking to purchase something.

This makes a great rainy day activity since the majority of activities are indoors. The welcome area is under shelter so even if you can’t enjoy the sunshine and ambiance you can still get your money’s worth at the bar.

The basic tour also includes a shot of the special reserve rum so you can taste it and see if you’d be interested in purchasing.

If you don’t drink but enjoy learning about history, culture and business, this is still worth a visit. I saw many families here so this is far from an adults only type of place.

There is no age requirement to visit, although there is a 5-10 minute introductory video at the beginning that I wouldn’t recommend for toddlers or infants.

We are going in February on a cruise and can't wait, this is one of our must stop and see of our trip. Thank you for sharing information, is very helpful. There isn't a trip through our cruise so we were just going to grab a cab and spend the day there :)

Best time! We have been there a couple of times. The mixology class was so much fun! We had a complimentary cocktail in the beginning but I do not remember what it was, I believe is was with dragon fruit juice? I could be wrong but would like to know what that was

Saturday 15th of May 2021

Probably, dragon fruit is very popular here!

Friday 12th of March 2021

Do they have rum that only can buy there?

Sunday 14th of March 2021

Yes, Casa Bacardi's Special Reserve rum is not available anywhere else in the world.

Another way of getting to the factory is by ferry boat to Catano; from the terminal near the cruise ship and hotel areas. It's not very expensive and and fun way to go across San Juan Bay. Taxis and public cars take you to and from Bacardi for a low price. La Princesa promenade is close by for a stroll when you get back from the tour and ferry ride.

Thursday 30th of January 2020

I found the tour of Bacardi a bit lame. Can't believe it's really a tourist attraction. It seemed more like a commercial for Bacardi. Our tour guide was darling but overall, not worth it.Ni

Friday 31st of January 2020

Sorry to hear that Nikki! I'm a sucker for history and museums so I enjoyed it. Maybe a cocktail making class could have made your experience a little more interactive?

Bacardi Rum Tour Catano Puerto Rico

Founded by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, who originated Barcadi Rum in 1862, Casa Bacardi in Catano , Puerto Rico is the worlds biggest rum distillery. The Bacardi family has made sure that you get this exact sense as soon as you walk into their gates. Not only is the free tour of the distillery entertaining and inebriating (you get two free Bacardi Rum cocktails at the end) but it’s also educational. You get to learn the history of the Bacardi family, no doubt one of the greatest names ever to walk the Caribbean, and journey through the process of creating one of the best Rums your tongue has ever tasted.

The Bacardi family has been conducting these tours ever since 1962 and the first thing you see when you enter the complex is the big bat sign that symbolizes the Bacardi brand. The story of the Bacardi Rum bat logo goes all the way back to 1862. The original distillery wasn’t as fancy then. It was a simple structure that was made out of rafters that happened to be home to fruit bats. And hence, the bat logo.

As you take the one hour tour through the ‘Kings of Rum’ castle, you will be taken through the interactive exhibit room where you will run through the history of Bacardi and their magic making process. There is a recreation of the first distillery, photos of Bacardi Rum’s history and you get to check out a display of the different blends and varieties of this great Caribbean spirit.

You also get to learn how to ferment rum! Well, not detailed enough so you can replicate your own at home but the basic steps that go into making it. You learn that there are two fermentation processes, Bacardi rum’s that are meant for sipping and specific ones that are great for mixing into cocktails. They also let you in on what they do with the by-products.

During the tour, you get a veteran bartender to teach you how to make three of the original Bacardi Rum cocktails that are rather popular even now: The Cuba Libre, which is basically Rum and coke with a slice of lime. The Daiquiri which is sugar, ice, lime juice and light rum and the original Mojito which is made with spearmint leaves.

And as promised, the tour ends with the guests going back to the Pavilion to order two of their favorite Bacardi drinks. Either that or you can try out something new. Once you are hammered well and good, you can visit the gift shop, where you get to buy any of their fine products at a reduced and friendly rate. You also get to see some of their greatest productions on display. The one that stands out the most is the exclusive 12 year aged rum called ‘Reserva Limitada’.

Sounds like a dream doesn’t it? The best part is that it’s not that difficult to get there. You can either take one of the numerous tours that run through to Casa Bacardi or just hope on the ferry from San Juan to Cataño and from there take a taxi to the Bacardi Plant.

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly shared an intimate moment while attending the Stagecoach music festival.

Attendee Shaquel Latonia captured the on-again, off-again couple slow dancing to country singer Jelly Roll’s hit song “Save Me” Friday night.

The video, shared to Instagram , shows the “Forget Me Too” rocker, 34, wrapping his arms around the 37-year-old “Transformers” star’s waist as they sway back and forth to the tune.

“And all of my sorrows, I’d just wash them down,” Jelly, 39, can be heard singing as Kelly leans his head back and laughs.

Fox and Kelly also spent time with Jelly and the “Need a Favor” crooner’s wife, Bunnie Xo, that same day when the group of four watched Nickelback perform.

“What I’ve learned from being in this relationship is that it’s not for public consumption, so I think as of now, I don’t have a comment on the status of the relationship per se,” Fox shared of where she and Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker, currently stand.

Although the two are reportedly living separately , they have continued to put on romantic displays: The actress made sure to be by the “Big Time Adolescence” star’s side as he celebrated his 34th birthday with a lavish bash last week.

Kelly and Fox began dating in 2020 , and he proposed to her in Puerto Rico in January 2022.
