The Best Time To Visit New England In 2024 + A Month By Month Guide

Planning a trip to New England and overwhelmed by when to visit? I totally get it, and you’ve come to the absolute right place to help you decide! Between stunning and dramatic coastal landscapes, mountain regions, and exciting cities, this region of the country really has it all during every season, and choosing a time to visit can seem, well … daunting.

Hi! My name is Sam, and I’ve been traveling throughout New England for over 15 years, and I’ve been all over this region during all of the seasons. So, I’m here to guide you on what the best time to visit New England is for your trip. Throughout the post, I’ll be sharing some tips for visiting, too, like the cheapest and most expensive times to visit, when to visit for seasonal activities, and lots more.

So, When Is The Best Time To Visit New England? A Quick Guide

Okay, here’s the deal: there’s no one time that’s best for visiting New England, and that’s because the four-season climate makes it pretty great year-round. Picking the best time to visit will depend entirely on what you want to focus on during your visit , the weather you’re hoping for, your budget, and the regions you want to visit.

Here are some general breakdowns to give you an idea of when to visit:

Generally, May – September is the best time to visit overall if you’re looking for mild or warm weather. These are also great months to take a road trip through the entire region, or along the coastline.

July and August are the best times to visit the coastal or summery destinations, including Cape Cod, Maine’s coastline, Rhode Island, and pretty much any beach town if you’re wanting the most authentic summer experience. July and August have the best and warmest weather for beach days, and all seasonal businesses will open.

June and September are shoulder months for the popular beach and coastal regions. They’re not quite as crowded as July and August, but are gaining popularity and not as quiet as they used to be – especially late June and early September. But if you’re hoping for a mix of summery weather and want to avoid some crowds, this is an ideal time to visit.

October is when you want to visit for fall foliage throughout most of New England, especially popular places in Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. Expect to pay top-dollar to travel to foliage hot-spots in October, and brace for the crowds. Is it worth it? Oh yes! There’s a reason New England is famous for its foliage!

December is, of course, the best time to visit for all things Christmas and the holidays.

January-March is the best time to visit for a winter wonderland or ski vacation. While ski resorts open as early as November in some areas, I recommend not booking a winter trip until after the New Year when it’s snowing more consistently, and you’re more likely to get that idyllic, wintery scenery.

My Personal Favorite Months To Suggest A Visit

May, early June , and September if you’re looking for nice, mild weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds, especially at top coastal and beach destinations. May will be the chillier of these times to visit, but usually the least crowded of these suggestions. I often travel around the area in May to save some money, and enjoy places with fewer people.

But, I really do love July and August for a beach-focused trip like Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, or coastal Maine. I honestly think summer in New England is such a cool experience and worth braving the crowds for (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like crowds!).

October for fall foliage is hard to beat!

Honorable mention : I really love New England in November ! Because the region is transitioning from fall to winter, many hotels and resorts offer amazing deals, and this is not a super busy month for tourists. In fact, it’s usually rather quiet in November before Thanksgiving, and a lot of places will offer super discounted hotel rates during Thanksgiving week/weekend.

Visiting New England: Seasonal & Month-By-Month Guide

Okay, now that you have a general idea of when to visit, let’s get into a month-by-month breakdown. In this section, I’ll share what to expect each month in terms of weather and general activities, as well as budget considerations.

New England In The Winter

Overall, winter in New England is typically what you’d expect, with one recent exception. Over the last few years, especially, this region has been impacted by global warming and the temperatures have slowly begun to trend higher. In fact, the winter season has seen the biggest jump in rising temperatures than any other season in New England.

So, I feel it’s important to be honest about what to expect during a winter trip, as experts are saying this is the new norm for the region. While there’s still a good chance it’ll be beautiful and snowy, there’s also a chance it could be warmer than you’re expecting. For example, the last three years during my own winter trips and getaways in New England, I’ve experienced a lot of days where it was cold and snowy, and other trips, it was almost 50°F and sunny in February.

Another example is the 2023-2024 ski season. Much of New England didn’t see a lot of snow (or any snow!) in December 2023, and it wasn’t until January that we started to see regular snow falls. With this trend of more extreme weather that can swing in either direction in the winter months, it’s good to set expectations and plan accordingly.

Okay, now that that’s out of the way, winter is obviously the perfect time to visit if you’re looking for a cold-weather getaway, and places up in the mountains are often a winter wonderland this time of the year.

Driving around New England in the winter is also a concern, but generally, safe . If you’re traveling in from another region, you’ll just want to be aware of weather reports, and choose to not drive during a significant snow fall or blizzard. However, snow plows run and lay down salt often, so driving is still pretty safe, even in the winter.

Where to go in New England in the winter:

• Any ski resort, with Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine having the best ones.
• Stowe, VT for an especially idyllic and quaint New England charm at a top ski resort in New England.
• White Mountains in New Hampshire for outdoor fun, cozy cabins, and stunning drives through the mountains.
• Kennebunkport, Maine for their Paint The Town Red festivities, cozy winter dining, and historic hotels.

Off-season winter recommendations for lower prices and fun things to do:

• Boston, MA for low hotel prices, and to visit the aquarium, take in a show, and enjoy the history.
• Portland, ME for low hotel prices, enjoy the museums, and dive into the culinary scene.
• Cape Cod – this region tends to have more mild weather compared to the rest of New England, and you’ll enjoy low hotel rates, stunning coastline, and scenic trails all to yourself.

New England In January

Average January Temperatures : 30°F during the day, 10-13°F at night*

January is a great month for outdoor winter sports, including skiing, and is usually the first month of the winter season that sees consistent, fresh snow on the slopes. January also has some of the shortest days of the year, but usually offers the most snow fall of the winter months. Snow fall changes from year to year, though, so it’s always good to check weather reports beforehand.

New England In February

Average February Temperatures: 33°F during the day, 14°F at night*

February starts to see longer days, but is still a great month for a winter wonderland vacation. Typically, the snow continues to fall, and ski resorts and winter activities are still in full swing.

With the Valentine’s Day holiday during this month, it’s also a great time to visit a fancy resort, spa, or book a cozy cabin in the mountains to celebrate.

New England In March

Average March Temperatures: 35-40°F during the day, 25°F at night*

March offers the warmest temperatures and the longest days of all the winter months, so if you’re looking to be outside as long as possible, March may be the best option for you. Higher elevation destinations in the mountains continue to see snow falls in March, but the lower elevations tend to see a decline in snow fall this month.

Mountain destinations will usually start to lower hotel rates later in the month, and many other places around New England are usually very reasonable around this time, too.

Spring in New England usually comes with finicky weather, but mid-May through mid-June are some of the best times to visit this region if you’re looking to avoid crowds, and are on more of a budget.

Generally, the first part of the season feels a lot like winter, especially late March. Once April hits, mud season is usually in full swing, which is the aftermath of all our winter snow melting for the year. But keep in mind, April can bring some snow, too! Once mud season is over in early-mid May, though, that’s when most places in the region are worth visiting.

Starting in April, spring flowers like daffodils are in bloom around New England (with a few places celebrating with spring festivals!), and u-pick tulip fields begin to open in May. More and more gardens also begin to open, and this is a great season to travel and avoid crowds.

Where to go in New England in the spring:

• Nantucket for the Daffodil Festival
• Woodstock, VT for their Baby Animal Days
• Brewster on Cape Cod for their Brewster in Bloom festival
• Boston for the tulips at the Public Gardens
• Coastal Maine to beat summer crowds, and to see the lupines in bloom in June

New England In April

Average April Temperatures: 55°F during the day, 35°F at night*

April is much like November in that it’s a month of transition, and it’s one of the lowest tourist seasons in New England. Many ski resorts have, or plan to, close up for the season, but the weather isn’t quite nice enough for exploring a lot of outdoor attractions, depending on the day. The general scenery tends to still be pretty gray, especially early in the month.

That said, with the daffodils beginning to bloom in April, there are pockets of life and color around, and the odd nice day with warm, sunny weather. Generally, this is one of the cheapest times to visit the region.

New England In May

May brings longer days and nicer weather after a usually rainy April season. While May does usually have some rain, there are often more days of sun and warm weather this month. This is also when the general scenery begins to really come back to life, with trees in bloom, flowers growing, and the grass turning back to green.

If you’re looking to travel to popular places around New England, especially the coastline or beaches, but you’re trying to save some money and don’t care about the weather or ocean water being super warm, I usually recommend booking a trip starting in mid May. You’ll save a good amount on hotel rates compared to the summer months, and prices continue to rise in June.

The one things to keep in mind is that some seasonal businesses along the coast and in beach towns, like seafood shacks, ice cream stands, and boat tour companies, may not open until Memorial Day weekend. But having traveled along the New England coastline a lot in May, I can tell you that you’ll always be able to find places that are open, so don’t let that worry you!

Average May Temperatures: 65°F during the day, 45°F at night*

New England In June

Average June Temperatures: 70-75°F during the day, 55-60°F at night*

June in New England is the first month of the year that it really feels like summer, and it tends to have perfect weather. While there’s still a chance of rain, there are usually more sunny and warm days than there were in May, but it’s not as hot as July and August. This is another great time to explore the coast and beach towns before the biggest crowds settle in.

One thing to keep in mind is that the later in June you book travel, the more expensive it will be. The first two weeks of June will have cheaper hotel rates than the last two weekends, since that’s about when summer tourism officially begins in popular coastal areas.

New England In The Summer

Summer is peak season for pretty much any destination along the coastline in New England, and this is when you can expect the most crowds and highest prices in these areas.

That said, I think it’s worth it! As much as I’m not usually one to travel anywhere in peak season, I actually love the New England coastline in the summer! I love how the cool Atlantic ocean water feels on a hot summer day, getting an ice cream cone, and enjoying the lively buzz these areas have this time of the year.

I’ve traveled to Cape Cod for at least a week every summer for the last 10+ years, and also used to go there as a kid in the summers. The entire coastline in this region just feels so special in the summer because of how long our winter season is.

The summer along the coast is also when all the seasonal business are open, so you’ll have the most options when it comes to seafood and lobster shacks, ice cream, and boat tours.

In the summer, you’ll want to prepare for hot and humid weather. Humidity averages around 75% in July and August, so it often feels warmer than it actually is. In recent years, the humidity has been even higher than that due to the impacts of global warming. And while the summer season offers the best weather, there is still a chance of rain – this is New England, after all!

• Massachusetts North Shore (Gloucester, Rockport, Newburyport/Plum Island)
• Ogunquit, Maine
• Westerly, RI
• Newport, RI

Fun destinations that are usually less expensive to visit than the coastline in the summer:

• White Mountains, NH
• The Berkshires in MA
• Litchfield Hills, CT

New England In July

Average July Temperatures: 80°F during the day, 60°F at night*

July is a fantastic summer month to visit New England because you’ll likely have great weather, and the hydrangeas are in bloom. New England is, of course, famous for its hydrangeas, and you’ll see them in places all over, especially in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard happen to be especially great for seeing hydrangeas.

New England In August

Average August Temperatures: 80-85°F during the day, 60-65°F at night*

August is the hottest month of the year in New England, and another perfect month to visit the coastline. The cool Atlantic ocean water will feel especially great on hot August days, and everything is still very much abuzz this month.

Hydrangeas usually begin to fade for the season at the end of July, but they will still be alive in August – they’ll just likely have lost some of their color.

New England In September

Average September Temperatures: 70°F during the day, 50°F at night*

September has become one of the more popular months to visit New England in the last five years or so because it’s a great shoulder season. Children are back at school once Labor Day is over, so many people aren’t traveling this time of the year. This usually means fewer crowds at popular places, and prices begin to drop.

That said, I’ve noticed that September continues to be a popular month for travel along the New England coast. It’s definitely been busier than it was than five years ago, so keep in mind that it won’t feel deserted. The first two weeks are more busy than the last two weeks, usually. But you definitely won’t see the crowds that July and August bring.

September weather the first half of the month tends to feel a lot like summer, and many locals refer to it as “second summer.” It often begins to cool down later in the month when you can enjoy more mild weather, but this varies from year to year.

The very end of September begins peak foliage season in New England in the northern regions, too. While I usually recommend that people plan their foliage trips in the first half of October, places in northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire begin to peak the last week in September. So, if you can’t make it in October, this is a good time to visit.

New England In The Fall

I’m just gonna say it – fall in New England is magical , and it’s definitely one of my favorite seasons to travel around this region! Peak foliage typically happens the first two weeks of October, depending on where you are, but foliage season can also last through November in some parts, so there’s a lot of opportunity to see fall color throughout fall.

But because the fall foliage is so stunning, it attracts a lot of tourists. I won’t sugarcoat it for you – the hotel rates are high, and the crowds are intense at the most popular foliage destinations. But honestly, it’s so worth it.

A note on the crowds – I’ve been to the top foliage spots right at peak time, and while there are a lot people around, it’s always possible to avoid them. So, I don’t want to deter people when I talk about how crowded foliage locations can be. I just want to allow you to adjust expectations, while also being excited to go. It’s a bucket list trip for many people for a very good reason!

Where to go to New England in the fall:

• Stowe, VT (peaks around Indigenous People’s weekend)
• Woodstock, VT (peaks around Indigenous People’s weekend)
• White Mountains, NH (peaks in early October)
• The Berkshires, MA (peaks early-mid October)
• Boston, MA (peaks late October)
• Salem, MA (peaks late October)

New England In October

Average October Temperatures: 55-60°F during the day, 40°F at night*

October is the best month to visit for fall foliage in most locations around New England, as the best spots will peak during this month.

As far as weather goes, it’s also good to know that the fall season has been trending warmer the last few years with the impacts of global warming, so while you can (and should!) anticipate chillier weather in October, you could also have some warm, sunny days that feel a bit more like spring or summer.

The higher elevations in the mountains, like Vermont and the White Mountains in New Hampshire, will also usually see their first snow fall in October. But most other regions won’t see their first snow until November or December.

Generally speaking, October is a season of magic and coziness in New England – you’ll find idyllic foliage scenery at every turn, including amazing apple cider donuts, farm stands, fall decorations, and restaurants highlighting the seasonal ingredients. And it’s just so exciting to see all the fall landscapes ablaze with color. It truly feels like stepping into a postcard.

• New England In November

Average November Temperatures: 45°F during the day, 30°F at night*

I think November is such an underrated month to visit New England, and I often plan at least one getaway this time of the year. November is a transitional season in this region because fall foliage is pretty much over is most areas, but winter has yet to arrive.

If you’re looking for fall foliage in November, your best chance at catching it is the first week of the moth along the Massachusetts coast – specifically Plymouth and possibly Boston. Other places where it may linger into early November are southeast Connecticut, and the southern coast of Maine. But usually all foliage has fallen off the trees by November in most places.

There’s also a good chance for a light snow fall in November, and the higher elevations, as mentioned, have likely already had snow once November rolls around. You’ll want to prepare for chillier weather and more bland scenery as leaves have fallen from the trees, but the upside is cheaper hotel rates and far fewer crowds everywhere.

I always like to suggest booking more expensive places in November because you’ll save the most money – this is the month I’ll usually splurge on a fancier resort or a spa stay.

New England In December

Average December Temperatures: 35°F during the day, 20°F at night*

I know it seems weird to include December under my fall section, but since winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21st, it seemed like this was the right place for it!

December in New England is all about holiday festivities, and this is one of the best places in the country to visit those charming small towns Hallmark movies are made of! I have an entire post on all the best Christmas towns in New England if you’re looking to plan a holiday getaway.

Weather in December has also fallen victim to global warming over the last few years, and snowy Christmas seasons have become less likely – especially in the last couple of years. While a white Christmas had been the norm in years past, the last few years have been either rainy or sunny.

So, when visiting New England for Christmas festivities, keep in mind that you may not experience snow. While it’s possible, and likely in some higher elevation areas, it’s not guaranteed. However, it’s still usually pretty chilly in December, so you’ll want to pack warm sweaters, coats, and boots.

Overall, expect crowds and high prices in popular Christmas towns like Kennebunkport, Nantucket, and Stockbridge. But you can also book mid-week travel, or travel closer to the Christmas holiday to save some money.

Most Christmas festivals in New England take place the first two weeks in December, which is why hotel rates will start to drop later in the month.

* Please keep in mind that these averages are based on historical data, and with the new weather and temperature patterns emerging in the last few years due to global warming, temperatures could fluctuate a lot more, and/or trend warmer. I always suggest you check weather forecasts a few days prior to your visit to see what the weather is predicted to be like when you’ll be there.

Most Expensive Times To Visit New England

This will depend on where you’re planning to travel to, but here’s a guideline on the most expensive times and places in New England:

July & August : Coastal and beach towns are the most expensive these months, with late June and early September also having high prices (not as high as July/August, though). Boston and Portland, Maine also usually see high hotel prices around this time.

October : Top fall foliage destinations are most expensive, including the White Mountains, Vermont, The Berkshires, Boston, and Salem.

January – Mid March : Top ski and winter getaway destinations are most expensive, including Vermont, White Mountains, and Maine ski areas.

Cheapest Times To Visit New England

This will also depend on where you plan to visit, but here’s a guideline on the least expensive times and places in New England:

Late March – April: Tends to be one of the cheapest time to visit most of New England as we transition from winter to spring.

November : Also tends to be a cheap time to visit because the ski resorts aren’t in full swing yet, and fall foliage season is pretty much over.

Early May : Another affordable time to visit. Prices will be higher than April, but still much less than peak summer and fall foliage pricing.

January – March : Along the coastline, you’ll find amazing hotel deals in the winter, especially in places like Cape Cod and coastal Maine.

Editor’s Note on Pricing in New England : It’s good to keep in mind that New England, in general, is a more expensive region to visit compared to other parts of the country. Prices trend higher, and even affordable times of the year can bring a little sticker shock. I just like to make folks aware of this as they’re pricing out hotels and accommodations!

Best Time To Visit For Fall Foliage

As mentioned, October the best month to visit for fall foliage. While some parts of the region will begin to peak the last week in September, October is the month where almost all of New England will begin to peak.

Popular places like the White Mountains, The Berkshires, and much of Vermont will peak the first half of October, central New Hampshire peaks mid October, and places like Boston, Salem, and the Massachusetts coastline peak toward the end of October. So really, you could spend the entire month in New England and chase the foliage the whole time!

Best Time To Visit The New England Coast

As mentioned, I really love the coastal destinations in July and August. July will put on a show of the blooming hydrangeas, which is really special to see!

But the best weather is in July and August. The tradeoff is that this is the most expensive time to visit the coastal areas, and also when you’ll see the most crowds. However, because all the seasonal businesses like seafood and lobster shacks, ice cream places, and tour companies are open, I think it’s definitely worth it.

When To Visit For Skiing & Winter Fun

While ski resorts will begin to open in November, I think the best time to visit New England for skiing is January-early March. This is when the region will see the most snow fall, and feel like a true winter wonderland.

For non-skiers, places offering sleigh rides, ice skating, and snow tubing will also be fully open during this time.

When To Visit New England For The Best Weather

July and August have the best weather in New England. These are the months you’ll see the most warm and sunny days, and the fewest rain days.

That said, keep in mind that New England does experience rain year-round, so while July and August are the driest months, there will likely still be a few days of rain.

Best Time To Visit For Whale Watching

Whale watching season in New England is between May and October, but some companies will begin to offer tours toward the end of April, and through early November. Whale watching tours are not offered in the winter months in New England.

The most common types of whales to see in New England on a tour are humpback, finback, and minke. Most tours guarantee a whale sighting, or you’ll receive a voucher for another tour.

Off the coast of Massachusetts is the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary , and this is regarded as one of the top whale watching destinations in the entire world. Yep, you read that right – the world! So when you visit New England, a whale watching tour is always one of my top suggestions.

Best Time To Visit New England For Seafood & Lobster

Coastal New England is famous for its incredible seafood, so this is something you’ll definitely want to try during your visit. And good news! You can get fresh seafood year-round in this region.

When it comes to lobsters, they’re harvested year-round, but since they’re most active in the summer and fall seasons, they tend to be less expensive abundant around this time. The hauls are a bit smaller in the winter and very early spring months, so you’ll usually see higher prices for them these times of the year.

It’s also good to be aware that a lot of the best and most popular seafood and lobster shacks along the coastline are seasonal, and only open late spring through Labor Day, or sometimes Indigenous People’s weekend. So if your primary goal when visiting New England is to get a lobster roll or lobster dinner at the best seafood shacks along the coast, you’ll want to visit in the summer.

That said, tons of restaurants around New England are open in the winter and serving up awesome seafood year-round. It’s really just the casual shacks that close down off-season.

Other seafood that’s local to the area like clams, oysters, cod, and hallock are also available year-round.

If you happen to visit in the winter, scallops are harvested this time of the year, and are especially fresh and delicious in the winter months! When you order, remember to pronounce them as “SKAHL-ups” so that you’ll fit right in 😉

Worst Time to Visit New England

May is the worst month to visit New England due to the 35 million people that travel to the region for Memorial Day weekend.  Hotel rates rise by 28%, and it’s difficult to find accommodations under $150 per night.

It’s most expensive to fly during the months of July, August, and December.  Flights can cost up to 42% more at this time. Flight rates reach their highest in December at an average of $1,095.

Cheapest Time to Visit New England

Touring Seasons

You can enjoy a trip to New England any time of year if you prepare for the weather and are wary of the busy times such as Memorial Day (late May), July 4th , Labor Day (early September), Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day (mid-October), and Thanksgiving (late November) when hotels , inns, restaurants , and transportation are filled to capacity.

There are also special local holidays such as Patriots Day (April 19th) in Massachusetts and Maine, Hallowe'en (October 31st) in Salem MA, and Christmas (December 25th) in Newport RI.

Early summer and early autumn are less crowded than high summer for a trip to New England . Autumn foliage season and Indian summer are New England's glory times, but winter has its own pleasures: skiing & snowboarding , concerts, First Night & more.

Summer High Season

Without doubt, the most popular times to travel in New England are the summer travel season from Memorial Day to Labor Day (late May, June, July and August) and the autumn foliage season (mid-September through October) centered on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day , unless you're coming for New England skiing .

Coming late and staying only briefly, spring in New England is often a disappointment . The week or two of spring days in April or May are a delight, with cool temperatures in the evening and just the perfect degree of warmth during the day, in bright, clear sun—just the thing for making maple syrup . But the delight of spring may be so brief that New Englanders joke "Oh, spring...yeah, last year it was on a Tuesday."

Late spring (April, early May), after ski season but before beach time , is traditionally called mud time , when the land thaws and runs to mud. It's the slowest season for tourist facilities, coming after ski season and before summer warmth and school vacations bring out the city folk. Some New England country inns take the opportunity to close , often for a week in April, to take a rest or make repairs. It's not the best time for outdoor activities, but cultural New England thrives.

Foliage Season

Vibrant reds, briliant yellows and muted tans and browns cover the branches. Countryside panoramas become blazing sweeps of color. Individual trees are like huge sun-lanterns . A single leaf can be a marvel.

The leaves die and fall to earth in a blizzard of fall foliage color that is one of earth's finest natural phenomena. The ground is covered in color, and you walk through it, scuffing the leaves about you, as though in a field of gold.

Harvest Weather

Throughout fall foliage season , days are still warm and pleasant , nights a bit chilly but not uncomfortably so. City people load their bikes into the car and head for the country, picking up fresh apple cider , pumpkins , and squash from farm stands on the way home.

Fresh cranberries are on sale in the markets all autumn, and although the blueberry -picking season is past, many apple orchards open so you can " pick-your-own " apples and get the freshest fruit possible at a low price. Many pick-your-own orchards feature fresh-squeezed apple cider for sale, along with apple pies , apple doughnuts and other fruit treats.

Color North to South

The cold touches the northern New England states of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine first, and the color change starts there in September and moves southward and eastward through the region, with the peak of color in the northern states usually in late September and early October .

The peak comes a bit later in the southern states of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts , often climaxing in mid-October— Columbus Day weekend is often thought to be the "peak," but there is little truth in this as peak color depends on the weather in a specific year, and your location in New England. There's usually plentiful color all the way through the end of October and the celebration of Hallowe'en .

In many years, fall foliage color extends well into November with some of the deepest, most glowing reds on maple, gum and oak trees coming then. You may not see whole forests in bright colors, and by mid- to late November some trees will be bare of leaves, but others will be at their blazing best. If severe wind and rain doesn't bring the leaves down, you may enjoy pockets of brilliant color in protected valleys right through Thanksgiving .

Indian Summer

After a period of chilly weather in October, and perhaps even a touch of frost , New England usually gets a respite, with a short period of warm weather known as Indian summer that can occur in late October or November.

Late summer returns and beckons New Englanders out of their houses to enjoy the chill heavy dew of dawn, the last blaze of color in the trees, the scent of leaf-mold and woodsmoke in the air, the gentle rustle of falling leaves, the crackle of dry leaves underfoot, and the quiet retirement of the natural year.

The sweetest of all New England Indian summers are those that come late in November around Thanksgiving . In rare years, the third week of November can have shirt-sleeve weather , with warm, abundant sun and the grateful feeling that we had received a priceless gift from nature.

Skiing and snowboarding usually begins at northern New England's loftiest ski resorts in early December, but the shopping and partying frenzy leading up to Christmas and New Year's often distracts all but the most resolute skiers.

After the holidays, outdoor winter sports boom until mid- to late-March, with the February Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday weekend being the height of the season—you'll need reservations for everything at your chosen ski resort on " MLK ."

September, 1st Monday - Labor Day, celebrating working men and women and their organizations (unions).

November 11 - Veterans Day is a federal holiday honoring those who have served in the US armed forces. Except for the national holidays of New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Day , January is quiet—but not the ski resorts .

New Year's Eve & Day

New Year's Eve in New England is First Night , with elaborate celebrations in some cities and towns.

New Year's Day (January 1) is a holiday, and transportation services can be busy on December 31st and January 2nd.

After New Year's, the first two weeks of January are not a busy time in New England, travel services are unburdened, and prices are lower.

January Weather

In January the weather is cold in New England, probably with snow , sleet or freezing rain, but also days of brilliant sunshine . High temperatures may be about 30° to 40°F (-1.1° to 4.4°C), but are often lower. Low temperatures may be 10° to 20°F (-12° to -7°C), but may be below 0°F (-18°C) during multi-day "cold snaps."

In the mountains temperatures may drop to -10°F (-23°C). Nobody in their right mind climbs to the summit of Mount Washington except the people who have to work there.

Mid-Winter Thaw

Everyone hopes for a mid-winter thaw , a period of several days when unseasonably warm weather moves in and temperatures rise to 50° or even 60°F (10° to 15.5°C), but it does not always happen.

January Shopping

The post-Christmas discount sales start right after Christmas in December, and carry into January as stores seek to extend the holiday shopping season (if at lower prices ), and also to clear out inventory to prepare for the spring product lines.

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day (" MLK "), a national holiday commemorating the life, work and tragic death of civil rights crusader Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., is the third Monday in January , making for a long weekend that many people look upon as the beginning of the ski season (even though the slopes usually open in December). The slopes are always busy on "MLK."

Ski lodges and country inns offer money-saving package deals , especially if you stay on weekdays rather than weekends.

Stowe Winter Carnival , Stowe VT, with ski races, parties and other festivities, many of them outdoors, is held in January.

The weather continues cold (like January) in New England, probably with snow and ice. The numerous cold, brilliant sunny days are great for outdoor activities if you dress warmly.

With luck, New England enjoys a brief mid-winter thaw in January or early February.

Ski season continues, though many New Englanders fly to the Caribbean or Mexico for a few weeks of warmth and to get away from the need to bundle up in lots of clothing whenever they go outside.

Presidents Day

The third Monday in February is Presidents Day , a national holiday honoring the birthdays of George Washington (February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). Some museums remain open, but most offices are closed.

School Vacation Week

Many schools take a one-week winter vacation (often in the week of Presidents Day), and airports may be crowded on the weekends before and after the vacation week as families escape to warmer climates.

The holiday weekend is particularly busy in ski country .

Last big snows, lots of skiing, St Patrick's Day , then " mud time " and tapping maple trees of sap to make maple syrup .

Traditional wisdom holds that after St. Patrick's Day (March 17) there will be no more big snowstorms in the southern New England states ( Massachusetts , Connecticut , Rhode Island )—but traditional wisdom is occasionally wrong.

In any case, the weather is still cold, and ski resorts in the northern New England states ( Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine ) have plenty of snow until April .

Saint Patrick's Day

Celebrated on March 17th as an Irish heritage day for all Americans, St Patrick's Day is not a holiday—except in Massachusetts' Suffolk County , which includes the City of Boston .

In Suffolk County, March 17th is officially commemorated as Evacuation Day , the date in 1776 on which British forces in Boston, under siege by the Continental Army, decided to withdraw ("evacuate") to Nova Scotia. This signal victory of the Revolutionary War was celebrated in 1902 with the completion of the Dorchester Heights Monument on the hill where the Continentals positioned the cannons that convinced the British to withdraw.

Irish influence having been powerful in Boston during the first half of the 20th century, the proclamation of March 17th as a local patriotic holiday allowed the celebration of St Patrick as well.

Some local government offices are closed on Evacuation Day, but most businesses, museums, etc. are open. A St Patrick's Day parade is held in South Boston , historic home of Boston's Irish-American community.

Mud Time & Maple Sugar

Late March and early April are " mud time " in much of New England, when warming days and chill nights produce partial thaw in the fields and on the hiking trails.

Farmers take advantage of the warming weather and rising sap for " sugaring off ," tapping their maple trees for sap and boiling it down to make maple syrup .

Patriots Day , Easter and universities' spring break are important as the weather warms and blossoms appear.

Ski season is winding down and spring has not really arrived, so many country inns close for all or part of April.

School Vacation & Spring Break

Easter falls in April in years in 2025, (Aptil 20th), 2026 (April 5th) and 2028 (April 16th), and New England's hundreds of colleges and universities empty out for Easter vacation (or spring break ), complicating travel on the weekends before and after the vacation.

Good Friday , preceding Easter, is not an official holiday though some businesses close and many people travel. Most public schools also have a week's vacation following Easter, which may crowd airports.

Patriots Day

Patriots Day (April 19) is a state holiday in Massachusetts , and Maine, celebrated on the third Monday in April. The day commemorates the first battles of the Revolutionary War , fought on April 19, 1775 in Lexington and Concord .

All Massachusetts state government offices and many local businesses close, though federal government offices and offices of large interstate and international companies remain open. Most museums are open, with the exception of some state-funded museums.

The headline events are the battle re-enactments in Lexington and Concord, and the Boston Marathon from Hopkinton MA to Boston . These are the events for which you must plan : transportation, parking, crowds.

Among the better-known commemorative events on Patriots Day is the Boston Marathon , which has been run now for over a century.

The re-enactment of the battle on Lexington Green starts at dawn (about 5:30am), but crowds of spectators begin to gather by 4 am, or even earlier. If you don't get there at least two hours early , you won't be able to find any good vantage point for the "battle."

Some people believe that to get the best views, you must stake out your spot three, four or even five hours before. (In other words, you spend the night there .)

About 5:30 am you will hear the redcoats marching along Battle Road as they approach Lexington Green.

Patriots Day events in nearby Concord are a bit nicer to your sleep-time. At 8:30 am the parade with lots of fife-and-drum bands and groups of Minutemen from surrounding towns and as far away as Michigan is followed by a re-enactment of the battle at Old North Bridge, commemorative ceremonies, and the repeated firing of brass cannons by the Concord Independent Battery .

Several church halls open to provide pancake breakfasts to the multitude.

Patriots Day is also the name of a movie (2016) about the Boston Marathon of April 15, 2013, and the terrorist bombings at the finish line.

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

The Boothbay Harbor Fishermen's Festival , Boothbay Harbor ME, is on the second weekend in April, with seafood feasts, exhibits and games.

New England weather trends toward milder and more pleasant—but always unpredictable. A last snowfall is not unheard of, particularly in the mountains of northern New England; but Memorial Day , a national holiday, signals the official start of the summer tourism season . " Decoration Day " began on May 30, 1868, when relatives, friends and comrades-in-arms of Civil War dead decorated the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery with flowers.

After World War I, the day became one to commemorate those who had served in the US military in any war.

Many towns organize parades or commemoration ceremonies on the last Monday in May , which was renamed Memorial Day .

The Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer travel and vacation season . On this weekend, highways are busy, buses, trains and planes may run near capacity, and reservations for transportation and lodgings are strongly advised.

The weather is unpredictable . Although it's often very pleasant, it can be cold and raw, chilly but sunny, warm and sunny, or hot and humid. You won't know until it arrives.

The summer tourism season ends unofficially on Labor Day , the first Monday in September.

Rooms at country inns and resort hotels are in great demand on the Memorial Day weekend, and on weekends through Labor Day (in September), but demand may be lower during the week especially in June and early July as New England children are still in school.

Independence Day , the Fourth of July, is celebrated on the day itself (not the nearest weekend), with parades, fireworks displays, speeches, picnics (especially at the beach), and cookouts everywhere.

Labor Day Weekend

The 3-day Labor Day holiday weekend at the beginning of September is the unofficial end of the busy summer tourist season.

America's September salute to workers began in 1882, and thus predates the celebration of May Day (May 1). Labor groups demanded an 8-hour workday in 1884, to begin on May 1, 1886. The general strike and disastrous Haymarket riots that started on that date in Chicago, the Bread and Roses Strike in Lawrence MA in 1912, and the May Day labor riots of 1919, may be why the USA celebrates labor and workers' contributions in September rather than on the day that the rest of the world—and particularly the socialist and communist parties—now celebrate.

Although there are commemoration ceremonies, Labor Day is overwhelmingly a three-day-weekend national holiday. In New England, many people head to the beaches for a last swim before the weather turns cold, or to the mountains for a hike.

Highways and transportation are busy on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Monday afternoon.

Labor Day weekend is busy, but the two weeks following are a good time to travel since children are back in school, few families travel, services are uncrowded, and some price reductions are offered.

Columbus/Indigenous Peoples' Day

In New England, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day , is a national holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October , makes a long weekend that is traditionally considered the height of New England's fall foliage season.

New Englanders pour out of the cities, visitors come from around the world, and special excursion trains and buses packed with " leaf peepers " cruise through the countryside to enjoy the brilliant reds, oranges, yellows and browns of the region's forests of maple, beech, birch and other deciduous trees.

Along with August and Labor Day, foliage season and Columbus Day are the busiest tourism times in New England .

Columbus Day is not the end of foliage season—and may not even be at the " peak color " of the season. Don't think that you must be in New England on Columbus Day weekend to enjoy good foliage color.

Peak color usually begins first in the relatively colder climate of mountainous northern New England and slowly spreads southward, coming much later to the warm shores of Long Island Sound .

It may begin in the north in mid- or late September, and the wave of color finally fade from the southern New England shores of Connecticut and Rhode Island by mid-November.

In Boston , hotels are often filled by conventioneers since October is also a popular month for meetings and conferences.

In the countryside, every hote l, motel , country inn and guest house room is reserved well in advance.

Some inns and seasonal services close for the winter after the Columbus Day weekend, and late October is fairly quiet in the countryside , though busy in the cities.

The last evening of the month, October 31st, is celebrated as Hallowe'en, America's version of All Saints' Day.

Hallowe'en started out spooky and malevolent, but has been transformed by jaunty American commercialism into a fun kids' festival of sweet consumption. Children dress in costumes ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, teenagers pull pranks....especially in Salem , Massachusetts. 

A Bit of History

All Saints Day (November 1) is a principal feast of the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, probably following the medieval custom of commemorating "saints known and unknown" on this day, sometimes known as Allhallows or Hallowmass .

In countries with Celtic influence the vigil on the night before All Saints, the evening of October 31st, incorporated old customs of the Celtic and British Isles, including lighting bonfires , fortune-telling , masquerading and mummery (masked performers in a folk play or mime).

These customs probably had more to do with the onset of winter (the "dead season"), traditionally commemorated on November 1st in pagan societies, than with the celebration of Christian saints.

Trick-or-Treating

In America today the saints have no part to play on October 31st. Hallowe'en is a masquerade festival when children dress in costume and go door to door ("trick-or-treating") asking for sweet treats .

Traditional costumes echo the theme of death and monstrosity: witches, ghosts, goblins, monsters, but in fact any fantasy costume is acceptable, from fairies and spacemen to fruits, vegetables, playing cards and roadkill.

" Trick or Treat ," the door-to-door custom, used to be a jocular, minor shake-down routine: "give me a treat or I'll play a trick on you."

Although vandalism and pranks (occasionally vicious) are still in evidence, the "trick" part of the holiday has little part anymore, at least among the throngs of small children who fill the streets on Hallowe'en evening, going from house to decorated house asking for treats.

The symbol of welcome for trick-or-treaters is having the house's porch light on, and/or a lighted jack-o-lantern and perhaps other Hallowe'en-theme decorations: ghosts, witches, black cats and harvest symbols.

Adults may attend Hallowe'en-themed parties, often in costume.

Hallowe'en in Salem MA

Unfortunately, the noble city of Salem MA is inundated with Hallowe'en revellers every year because of a mistaken belief in its link to witchcraft . More...

The unfortunate martyred souls persecuted by superstitious colonial officials and religious bigots in Salem during the Salem witch trials of 1692 must turn in their graves at the sight of thoughtless romantics dizzy with ditzy visions who turn Salem into an absurd carnival of bizarre pseudo-mystical claptrap every October 31st—but it's good for business.

The Maine Cheese Guild holds its Open Creamery Day in October, the day on which you can visit its member artisanal cheesemakers and see how their tasty cheeses are made.

Many inns and seasonal attractions close after Columbus Day (mid-October), so November is a slow month for travel. The foliage crowds have departed and the ski crowds have not yet arrived. With luck, we may get Indian summer . Then, Thanksgiving , a national holiday, is the busiest travel time of the entire year .

Fall foliage season usually extends well into November, particularly in the southern New England states, and even late in the month you'll come across protected valleys still aflame with color.

Veterans' Day

Veterans Day , November 11th, is a US national holiday commemorating those who have served in the US military forces.

The holiday extends to three days the early- or mid-month weekend nearest November 11th. Businesses and government offices are closed for the day, as are some shops and stores.

All cities and towns remember the day with patriotic decorations, flags, parades and speeches . Often there are ceremonies and prayers in cemeteries where war veterans are buried.

Veterans Day is especially important in New England, as this region of the country has sent its young men and women off to war for longer than any other part of the USA.

The graves of Revolutionary War Minutemen in Lexington and Concord MA are especially commemorated, as these were the first to risk their lives in their country's service.

Veterans Day celebrates the service not just of soldiers, but also of those who brought mercy and comfort to the afflicted of war, such as Concord's Louisa May Alcott.

Ms Alcott served as a nurses' aid in a hospital near Washington during the Civil War. She suffered from illness contracted during her service, never fully regained robust health, and her illness may have contributed to her early death.

With luck, New England's fall foliage season lingers until mid-November, at least in a few places, and New Englanders feel especially lucky if Indian summer brings warm days and not-too-cold nights.

By mid-month the snow has usually arrived in the mountains of the northern New England states, ski resorts begin to open a few lifts and trails, and there may be some flurries or fast-melting snow in the south, especially later in the month around Thanksgiving .

Thanksgiving

The fourth Thursday in November celebrates the arrival of English Calvinist Pilgrims in Plymouth MA, and their establishment, with Wampanoag (Native American) aid, of a successful colony.

Pilgrim Commemoration

Thanksgiving commemorates the first successful year (1621) of the Pilgrim colony at Plymouth MA.

After the first terrible winter, when half of the Pilgrims died, came a summer of abundant crops and successfully hunted game. After the harvest was gathered, the Pilgrims reportedly held a feast of thanksgiving and invited their Wampanoag neighbors who had aided their survival.

President George Washington designated November 26, 1789 as a day of thanksgiving for the new US Constitution, but it was President Abraham Lincoln who, in the midst of the Civil War, declared Thanksgiving to be an annual federal holiday.

Every November, the original Thanksgiving celebration is re-enacted at Plimoth Patuxet Museums i n Plymouth MA.

A Family Holiday

Everyone wants to be with family at Thanksgiving. If this is not possible, they want to be with friends .

Traditional foods served at the Thursday dinner include roast stuffed turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (yams), sweet corn, green beans, lima beans, salads, and of course sweet pumpkin pie for dessert.

Strangers and foreigners are invited to join in the feast and join a group of friends or family. No one wants to be alone, or for others to be alone, on the day of national thanksgiving.

If you're visiting New England at Thanksgiving, strike up an acquaintance and you'll probably be invited to join the feast.

Travel Nightmare

This means that the week of Thanksgiving is also the busiest travel time of the entire year in the USA as everyone heads home to be with family: 40 million travelers , 31 million on the highways, 29,000 flights. Flights are fully booked months in advance, highways are clogged, trains and buses are packed to capacity. Transport is slow everywhere.

Wednesday , the day before Thanksgiving, is usually the busiest day, next is the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Tuesday and Saturday of that week also see heavy travel.

The Weather

With a bit of luck, New England's Indian summer may coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday. Fall foliage season and its colorful trees have passed, making a few days of warmth even more welcome.

The Mini-Low-Season

By the way, the weeks in November before Thanksgiving, and the weeks after Thanksgiving until mid-December (that is, before the ramp-up to the Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's holidays), are excellent times to travel in New England. Transport is uncrowded and fares are lower, although summer businesses are closed off-season.

Some inns also close in November, reopening in December with the advent of ski season .

Get Ready for Skiing!

New England's ski resorts begin to make their own snow if nature has not provided the traditional cover, and some eager skiers take advantage of the Veterans Day holiday (November 11th) for a first schuss down the slopes. By the end of the month most of the large resorts are in action.

Early December travel is easy and inexpensive, but after December 15th, airfares rise, roads become more crowded, everything—especially shopping —is busier right up to Christmas and New Year's Day .

Winter comes to northern New England ( Maine , New Hampshire and Vermont ) in November, but by December the entire region is in its thrall.

High temperatures may be about 30° to 40°F (-1.1° to 4.4°C), but are often lower. Low temperatures may be 10° to 20°F (-12° to -7°C).

Usually there is some snow , although in a snowless winter December is best for ice skating on New England's thousands of glacial lakes and ponds. Once snow arrives in quantity after the ponds freeze, degrading the ice surface, the skating season may be over for the winter (barring a January thaw and re-freeze.)

New England ski resorts are open in December, and though they may be fairly busy on weekends , innkeepers offer special low prices on weekdays to lure vacationers.

The Holidays

Until the national holidays of Christmas (December 25th) and New Year's Day (January 1), this is not a busy month for tourism. Travel is heavy on the day or two preceding the 25th and the day or two following, then there is a lull until New Year 's, when travel intensifies again.

The holidays are a time of tradition, and as New England is a traditional place, Christmas fits right in. Government offices, banks, most businesses and many public facilities such as museums and libraries are open on Christmas Eve (December 24th), but closed on December 25th.

Colleges and universities tend to close for vacation from just before the 25th until after New Year's Day.

In Boston , a towering Nova Scotia white spruce is erected on Boston Common, a gift of the people of Halifax, perpetually thankful for the aid Boston gave to Halifax after the terrifying munitions explosion of December 6, 1917—the largest man-made explosion in history until that time—leveled most of the city.

In Newport RI , several of the city's sumptuous mansions are decorated for the holidays and opened to visitors for tours, concerts, mulled cider and cookies. The holidays are a great time to visit Newport.

Mystic Seaport in Mystic CT has a special program of holiday festivities.

Nantucket MA features carolers in Victorian garb , art exhibits, and tours of historic houses.

The Interim

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is one long festival in New England.

On December 26th, the day after the Christmas holiday, the shops and stores re-open to mobs of bargain-hunters eager to get their hands on the heavily-discounted merchandise left over from the frenetic post-Thanksgiving shopping season.

Colleges, universities and schools are on vacation, so young people are everywhere, and especially in the cinemas.

In the holiday interim, many New Englanders go skiing and snowboarding , or take short vacations to New York City , which is very busy then.

First Night/New Year's Eve

As in most of the world, the last day of the year, December 31st , is a perfectly good excuse for a party—in this case, New Year's Eve and First Night .

First Night varies from place to place, but the common theme is good clean fun despite the cold. Arts are prominent, including music, sculpture (ice sculptures are a favorite), exhibitions, costumes, and even parades with decorations and floats. Some cities in the region, especially Boston , organize special amusements and entertainments.

Enjoy the music, performances, shows, parades and processions, lights, noise and winter merriment to drive away the cold and the dark.

Boston's First Night features indoor and outdoor concerts , an ice sculpture show and competition on Boston Common, fireworks over the river, and a dozen other activities.

Burlington VT also has elaborate First Night activities and entertainments.

New Year's Day

New Year's Day is a national holiday. Virtually everything is closed for the holiday: offices, businesses, museums, attractions—all closed.

Fall is by far the pinnacle time to visit New England with the crisp air and stunning colors of the autumn leaves peaking from the end of September through mid-October.

This is a perfect time to go leaf peeping or enjoy other outdoor activities. You’ll also find plenty of fall festivals at farms throughout the region where you can pick pumpkins , make your way out of a corn maze , or go apple picking where you can sample some famous apple cider donuts . 

New England really comes alive during the summer months with countless outdoor activities throughout the region such as concerts , fairs , festivals and Farmers’ markets . With the warmer weather, its the perfect time to get out on the water whether its a whale watch , boat cruise , kayaking or a white water rafting trip.

Being the birthplace of America, the Fourth of July is a very popular time to visit and there are lots of celebrations around the region with Boston’s festivities at the top of the list.

Insider Tip: While the months of July and August tend to be the warmest to enjoy swimming , boating and other water activities, you may still find the water in the ocean and lakes to be a a bit chilly, especially in the northern regions.

Winter is a chance to hit the slopes and experience some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the east. Not up for downhill skiing? Explore the many trails by snowmobile or cross-country skis. For those not interested in playing in the snow, there are still plenty of indoor activities to keep you busy this time of year.

The holidays in New England are absolutely beautiful with displays of tree lightings and festival of lights in many towns. Many of the mansions and historic houses are also beautifully decorated for the season and available for touring, with some even hosting gingerbread house competitions. 

Spring brings maple syrup , blooming flowers and the melting of all the snow up in the mountains to bring much needed water to the lakes and rivers for summer water activities. Get out to one of the maple farms and see how maple syrup is made or check out the spring blooms all over the region.

Depending on the season, Spring skiing may be an option or you can learn how to tap a maple tree at one of the many maple farms.

If you are visiting over Patriot’s Day, you can even cheer on the runners along the Boston Marathon route.  

What is New England’s Weather Like?

Anyone who lives in New England will tell you that the weather can be quite unpredictable . While there are average temperatures published, you really need to plan for anything. It is not uncommon to have a 20-30 degree temperature difference in the same day or within the same week. 

It can be 80-90 degrees during the day and then plummet to the 50s or 60s overnight. We have had blizzards in April and heat waves in November. As the local saying goes “Only in New England” is the consensus when it comes to our weather – so be prepared. 

Typical Weather in New England

Each season usually does have its distinct climate with the southernmost points being a bit warmer than the more northern areas.

Spring in New England can still be chilly, with average night time lows in the 20s and highs reaching mid-60s as it gets closer to summer. Known to locals as “Mud Season”, this time of year tends to be a bit rainy and muddy so plan to bring a raincoat, umbrella and some rain boots. You may want to have some indoor activities planned as well.

Summer temperatures can reach into the 90’s and can be hot and humid . Typically, it will be a little cooler the farther north you go. Don’t forget the sunscreen if you plan to be in the sun and always bring a sweater or sweatshirt as temperatures tend to fall at night or near the water. Mosquitoes and ticks can be an issue when outdoors so make sure you have bug spray.

Fall has the perfect crisp air which warrants a lightweight jacket for your leaf-peeping activities. If we are lucky, we may get what is called “Indian Summer” where there is a warm stretch around the end of October or early November. If you are planning on hiking at any elevation, be sure to pack extra layers as weather can change drastically. November can also be wet so be careful not to slip on the falling leaves and plan for early snow – you just never know.  

Winter can be quite frigid from December through February with a good amount of snow accumulating, especially in the northern regions. A warm coat, hat and gloves and a good pair of waterproof or insulated boots are a must if you plan to spend time outdoors.  

What is a Nor’easter?

New England can also have its share of severe weather at times. It is famous for its Nor’easters which are storms known to bring howling winds and deep snow – especially up north which helps to make great conditions on the ski slopes. 

Mount Washington is also notorious for having some of the worst weather on the planet with the strongest winds ever recorded happening on this peak. If you plan to visit the summit be sure to check the weather and plan accordingly.

How Big is New England?  

At 71,988 square miles, New England is roughly the size of the State of Washington. Maine, the largest state, takes up half of that area.  The states are fairly small so it is easy to travel between them with many destinations just a few hours apart. Rhode Island is the smallest state at only 1,545 square miles.

The region is bordered by Canada in the North and North East and by the state of New York to the West and South. Its extensive coastline along the Atlantic Ocean stretches from Connecticut to northern Maine.

Facts about New England’s Geography

While the region is small, it has very diverse landscapes and ecosystems including its jagged rocky coastline along the east coast, mountains , sandy beaches , extensive salt marshes , dense forests , cranberry bogs and numerous lakes and rivers.

• The Appalachian mountains run through Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine with almost 700 miles of trails.  
• Mt. Washington is the highest Mountain peak at 6228 feet. 
• Lake Champlain is the largest lake bordering Vermont, New York and Quebec, Canada
• The Connecticut River is the longest river, running 407 miles from northeast New Hampshire to Connecticut. 
• The Great Marsh , the largest Salt Marsh in New England, extends along the east coast from Gloucester to New Hampshire providing a natural flood barrier to inland towns and a haven for wildlife.  
• Massachusetts is one of only five states in the US that have cranberry bogs and is the 2nd largest supplier of cranberries.

How to see New England in autumn

New england’s foliage season is what cherry blossom season is to japan. an event loved by locals, but not yet tainted by tourists, here’s when and where to go….

I t’s a picture that has adorned a thousand postcards. Come autumn in New England, the trees become cloaked in a blaze of zingy oranges, Pink Lady reds and treacle-coloured golds. This is what Americans call “the foliage season”. Here’s how to do it.

When’s the best time to visit New England?

Leaves start to turn in mid-September and peak colour-wise in mid-October when temperatures hover in the low twenties with warm, sunny days ideal for sightseeing. If you’re less about leaf-peeping and more about that crunch-beneath-your-boots feeling, head at the end of October when the parks have emptied.

What’s the best way to see the foliage?

While Americans tend to take a road trip down the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire, the easiest way for Brits is a tour that ticks off all the best bits. Start in Boston and travel north to see the foilage on show in America’s most impressive national parks. You can see fantastic displays everywhere in New England — Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire.

Acadia National Park in Maine wins hands down when it comes to colour variety with everything from red to yellow. But don’t be fooled into thinking there aren’t plenty of other spots to tempt you. Try the White Mountains in New Hampshire, or the Sculpture Garden in New Jersey.

When to Go in New England

New England has no monopoly on seasonal shifts and splendors. Yet the region dons new outerwear every 3 months or so with unparalleled style and finesse. The ever-changing seasons here are precisely what make New England so distinctive, and there are reasons to embrace all four. Even the unofficial “sprinter,” that muddy, sloppy season that marks winter’s end and spring’s arrival, has fans among the outdoorsy and budget-conscious.

SUMMER -- The peak summer season in New England runs from the 4th of July through Labor Day weekend. That’s a pretty slim sandwich, only about 8 1/2 weeks. But, wow, does the population of each of these states ever swell between the starting line and summer’s checkered flag. Vast crowds surge into New England, particularly on weekends and when temperatures soar.

It’s no wonder. Summers here are exquisite, particularly because the daylight lasts so long—until 9 or 9:30pm in late June and early July. In the mountains, cooler temperatures prevail, and this natural air conditioning reinvigorates urbanites. Along the seashore, reliable breezes keep temperatures down even when it’s triple-digit steaming in the big cities. In general, expect moderation: In Portland, Maine, the thermometer tops 90°F (32°C) for only 4 or 5 days each year, typically.

Weather in this region is largely determined by winds. Summer’s southwesterly winds bring haze, heat, and humidity (to everywhere except the seashore); northwesterly winds bring cool, bright weather and knife-sharp views. These systems tend to alternate during the summer, the heat and humidity building slowly and stealthily for days—then swiftly getting kicked out on their ears by stiff, cool winds pressing down from Canada. Rain is unpredictable in summer—afternoon thunderstorms pop up out of nowhere and roll through at a mighty pace. On average, about 1 day in 3 here will bring some rain.

For most of this region, midsummer is prime time. Expect to pay premium prices at hotels and restaurants. (The exception is around the ski resorts, where you can often find bargains.) Also be aware that early summer brings out scads of biting black flies and mosquitoes as you move inland from the coast in the northern states, a state of affairs that has spoiled many north-country camping trips. Come prepared for these guys.

What to do? Play some golf. Go hiking or kayaking. Body surf in the ocean. Catch a minor-league baseball game. Or indulge in one of our favorite activities: rocking in a chair on a screened porch, reading a book, playing guitar, or just listening intently to the sounds of loons or crickets and watching the night sky for stars you never knew existed.

AUTUMN  -- Don’t be surprised to smell the tang of fall approaching as early as mid-August, when you’ll begin to notice a few leaves turning blaze-orange on maples at the edges of wetlands or highways. Fall comes early to New England, puts its feet up, and stays for some time. The foliage season begins in earnest in the northern part of the region by September’s third week; in the southern portions, it peaks around mid-October.

Fall in New England is one of the great natural spectacles in the world. When the region’s rolling hills light up in brilliant reds and stunning oranges, awed motorists pull to the sides of roads to snap photos. The best part? This spectacle is nearly as regular as clockwork, with only a few years truly “bad” for foliage (due to odd storms or invasive, leaf-eating pests).

Keep in mind, however, that autumn is the most popular time of year to travel to the New England states—bus tours flock here like migrating geese in early October. As a result, hotels in renowned leaf towns are invariably booked solid at that time. Reservations are essential. Don’t be surprised if rates are $50 or more per night higher than they were just weeks ago at your inn or hotel. Deal with it; you can’t buy scenery like this.

Some states maintain seasonal foliage hotlines and/or websites to let you know when the leaves are at their peak: Vermont (tel. 800/VERMONT [837-6668]), Maine (tel. 888/624-6345 ), and New Hampshire .

WINTER -- New England winters are like wine—some years are exceptional, some are lousy. During a good season, mounds of light, fluffy snow fill the deep woods and blanket ski slopes and snowmobile trails. A “classic” New England winter offers profound peace and tranquility, as the fresh snow muffles all noise and brings such a thunderous silence to the entire region that the hiss and pop of a wood fire at a country inn can seem startlingly loud. During these sorts of winters, exploring the forest on snowshoes or cross-country skis is an experience bordering on the magical.

During the other winters, the weather fairies instead bring a nasty mélange of rain, freezing rain, and sleet. The woods become filled with crusty snow, the cold is damp and bone-numbing, and it’s bleak, as gunpowder-gray clouds lower and linger for weeks. There are ways to beat this, however: The higher in elevation you go into the mountains of northern New England, or the farther north you head (to such places as Jay, VT), the better your odds of finding snow.

The coast in winter is a crapshoot at best, more likely to yield rain (or sticky, heavy “snowball” snow) than powdery snow. Yes, winter vacations on the ocean can be spectacular—think Winslow Homerian waves crashing savagely onto an empty beach—but after a day or two of trying to navigate your car around big, gray, slushy snow banks, you too will soon be heading for Stowe unless hunkering down by a fire is all your soul craves.

Ski areas get crowded. Some very crowded. Expect maximum pricing, so-so food, and a herd mentality; this is the price you must pay for enjoying great skiing. The resorts get especially packed during school vacations, which is just when many resorts choose to hike up rates at hotels and on the slopes.

By the way, if you visit a small town in this region during winter, there is another pleasure to enjoy during the deepest freeze: public ice skating and ice hockey. You’ll find locals skating on town green and public park rinks, lakes, and ponds. How do you find these spots? Look for a clump of cars beside an iconic little warming hut with a wood-burning stove inside, sending up smoke puffs like a signal to the masses. Cities like Boston, Newport, Providence, Portsmouth, and Hartford are also destinations for romantics who want to lace up skates.

SPRING -- After the long winter, spring in New England is a tease. She promises a lot and comes dressed in impressive finery (see: delicate purple lilacs, which blossom for just two weeks). There are years when spring lasts only a few weeks, “occurring” around mid-May but up north as late as June. New Englanders often call this time of year “mud season.” Warming earth’s a gooey mess; rushing waterfalls are worth mucking up your boots.

One morning the ground is muddy, the trees are barren, and gritty snow is still collected in shady hollows and mall parking lots. The next day, it’s in the 80s and sunny, maple trees are erupting with little red cloverlike buds; kids are swimming in the lakes where the docks have just been put in; and somewhere in New Hampshire, a blue cover is being ripped off an aboveground pool.

Travelers need to be awfully crafty to experience spring in New England—and, once they get here, they often have trouble finding a room. That’s because a good number of innkeepers and restaurateurs close up for a few weeks for repairs or to venture someplace warm. The upside? Rates are never cheaper than in early spring . . . right up until college graduation season. It’s jaw-dropping how little you can pay in March for the same room that would cost 3 to 10 times more in mid-summer or October.

Beaches of New England

Everyone who loves New England and water fun has a favorite beach . Among the most well-known are the sandy sweeps and bending dune grasses of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. At the opposite end of image and mood (but without sand), are the swimming holes of the old Vermont marble quarries and the tumbling waters of rock strewn mountain streams. Those images only touch of the variety of salt-water and fresh-water swimming places in New England.

Even the most energetic vacationers need to kick back at the end of the day. Lodgings across New England serve every taste. How would you like to drift into sleep to the lapping of ocean waves from a beach or oceanside resort ? Awaken to the hoot of loons in a mountain resort ? Sip a leisurely cup of coffee at a boutique hotel or bed-and-breakfast inn in a historic neighborhood in charming Portland ME, Burlington VT, Boston MA, Portsmouth NH, Providence RI , or New Haven CT ? Family friendly and pet-friendly lodgings welcome kids and dogs, too.

Romance & Luxury

Start your romantic getaway plans with a walk along a windy beach dune or a sunset cruise on a mountain lake. Move on to a candlelit dinner in a 300-year-old converted stagecoach inn. Romance can go with dazzle, too, like at high-rise luxury hotels in places like Portland ME, Boston MA , and Providence RI , some with rooftop restaurants or pools. In winter, farmers offer horse-drawn carriage rides (or even snowmobile or dog sled rides for the hearty). Romantic dining, from a café in some city’s Little Italy to a restaurant alongside a sweet village green, is everywhere.

Children’s fun is everywhere . Would your children love to ski or snowboard? Poke through granite caves alongside a churning ravine? Ride river rapids or take a zip line dive down a mountain? Play and swim at a sandy ocean beach or a mountain lake? Take a cruise off the Maine coast on a classic windjammer? Maybe visit the olden times at a living history museum like Old Sturbridge Village or Mystic Seaport ? Indoors, children’s museums and science museums are found almost everywhere, two of the best aquariums anywhere are in Connecticut and Massachusetts .

New England’s traditional foods range from Maine lobsters and blueberries to Boston baked beans and Vermont cheese and maple syrup. In this region book-ended by the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound , and Vermont’s Lake Champlain , nearly every eatery serves a fine platter of seafood. Do you love friendly, down-home diners? New England has them.

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall

People have their favorite New England seasons, but it can be hard to choose the single best. The sugar maples of the New England mountains burst into brilliant color in fall , with Columbus Day as the usual epicenter of the show. All through the season, smart travelers plan a self-guided foliage drive. Winter brings snow sports of all kinds to the mountain regions, where the ski areas rank up with the best ski spots across the nation. Summer is a time for beaches – from the sandy stretches of Cape Cod to the fresh waters of tree-lined inland lakes and swimming holes.

Cruising: small vessels, big scenery.

New England is loved for its waterways, most famously for its waterfront along the Atlantic Ocean, but also the historic Lake Champlain , the mountain-ringed lakes of New Hampshire , the fly-fishing and rafting resource of the Housatonic River , and the many beautiful bays. Maine’s famous windjammers offer cruises, as do boat pilots on Lake Winnipesaukee . Many cruises offer specialty events like sunset views or wine tasting, or a chance to watch lobstermen pull in their catch. Essex, Connecticut , offers a combined land-and-water adventure on am antique train followed by a river paddleboat.

Museums and Shopping

She loves museums; he loves to shop. Let’s start with Boston, MA ’s fabulous arts, history, and science museums. Two favorites are the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum for art and a medieval courtyard and the USS Constitution Museum , with “Old Ironsides” docked nearby. Shopping is grand at Newbury Street and the famous Faneuil Hall Marketplace . It’s not fair, though, to focus on a single city. Art and history and science museums are plentiful and fascinating in Maine , Vermont , New Hampshire , Massachusetts , Rhode Island , and Connecticut .

Colonial and Revolutionary History

You can find stories of the creation of America almost everywhere, along with tales of the region’s seafaring history . Boston, MA has the Freedom Trail among stores, churches and houses where the Revolution of 1776 was planned. The Industrial Revolution was founded at Slater Mill in Rhode Island , when a Brit smuggled plans for a water-powered mill out of England. Living history museums include Plimoth Patuxet . The Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, ME , is one of several that tell the histories of Native peoples.

When is the best time to visit New England?

• Month-by-month

The best time to visit New England depends on what you want to do while you’re there. There are four distinct seasons, each one bringing its own touch to the region.

We particularly recommend visiting during spring. The thawing spring temperatures bring wildflowers, and baseball when Boston’s Fenway Park opens. Many beaches also open for the season.

The summer months are ideal for a family trip. From June to August, you can expect temperatures exceeding 30°C, ideal for sailing and island-hopping in Cape Cod.

Inland, in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, the New England autumn blankets the landscape in rich, warm tones as the leaves change. Harvest time happens in September and October, when farms produce apple cider. These months also offer the best whale watching off the Massachusetts coast.

Month-by-month guide for travelling in New England

Visiting New England in January - March

The harsh winter months see many coastal resorts shut down entirely, but the mountainous areas of New England attract visitors with a host of winter sports. Vermont is the best-known state for skiing and is home to a wide variety of resorts, from the powdery snow of Jay Peak to the family-friendly Okemo Mountain. New Hampshire also draws in many East Coast skiers.

Events & Festivals

• Saint Patrick’s Day on 17th March is a public holiday that can take over Boston — some 20% of its residents claim Irish heritage. A parade is the focal point of the celebrations.

Visiting New England in April - May

Spring breathes new life into New England, with wildflowers blossoming in the mountains and warming temperatures brightening up the coastline. New Hampshire and Vermont are the main beneficiaries of springtime: alongside the flowering landscape, the maple trees enter their sugaring season. In Boston , baseball fever sparks into life in April as the city’s beloved Red Sox begin their gruelling 162-game season.

• The Boston Marathon, which has been running since the late 1800s, takes place on Patriots' Day (the third Monday in April). Now attracting half a million visitors, the event’s recent history has tightened the city’s bond with the race and made it a poignant reminder of Boston’s resilience.

Visiting New England in June - August

The summer months are one of the two peak seasons in New England, when the entire region is in its element as temperatures soar. Visitors can enjoy fully the area’s scenery, from glacial lakes and mountains to the coast and its pristine beaches. Summer is a great time for families to visit, with a plethora of activities to choose from, although this is one of the busiest times of year. For more seclusion, Bar Harbor in Maine is the launch point for the Acadia National Park, where the majority of the state’s 75,000 moose live along with 40 other wildlife species.

• Tanglewood — every summer, the Boston Symphony Orchestra relocates to the countryside of the Berkshires and holds a series of concerts on the Tanglewood Estate. One of the best-known classical music festivals in the USA, it typically begins in mid-June.

Visiting New England in September - October

New England’s second peak season is autumn, when the shift to cooler temperatures sets off the glorious fall displays. From mid-September to October, the blanket of reds and golds descends from Canada and falls across New England like a curtain, drawing a huge number of ‘leaf peeper’ tourists. The window for seeing the foliage is quite narrow, and New England’s small inns book up many months in advance. The cooler temperatures lend themselves to walking and hiking, and you can also head to Provincetown for whale watching as the cooling Atlantic Ocean pushes whales closer to the shoreline.

Visiting New England in November - December

The end of October signals the end of the travel season in New England, and many hotels and inns close up until the end of the year. Thanksgiving typically signals the start of ski season in Vermont and New Hampshire, though the snowfall can be patchy.

• Thanksgiving Day, taking place on the fourth Thursday in November, is the busiest travel day in the USA as the majority of the country heads home for this public holiday.

Best Places to Visit in New England: Vermont

Burlington, vermont.

One of the best places to visit in New England is Burlington, Vermont, a place I lived for several years!

Do you like the outdoors, craft beer, and progressive-minded folk? You will love the hip city of Burlington and the many fun things to do here . Set on the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington has a small-town vibe but plenty going on.

The greater Burlington area is a must-visit mecca for foodies and craft beer lovers . There are tons of breweries around here and an explosion of farm-to-table cuisine that is well worth the trip. Hard cider is making a strong showing in New England , too, and Foam Brewers is a great place to try it in Burlington. They’re located near the Lake Champlain waterfront, making it a great place to be on a summer afternoon.

From cool coffee shops to great places to stay to fun, free things to see and do , Burlington is one of the best places for a New England vacation!

Church Street Marketplace is one of the most popular places to go in Burlington, with great shopping, restaurants, and a whole lotta entertainment, both on the streets and in the businesses surrounding.

The lake is the focus of much of the Burlington’s outdoor activities. The Burlington Bike Path skirts the edges for several miles, providing an ideal route for a bike ride or a run. There’s lots of great hiking nearby , too.

Getting out on the water is a must, whether you want to try sailing, stand up paddle boarding or kayaking. You can also hop aboard one of the bigger boats, the scenic ferries. These will take you across to the other side (NY state) or around for a scenic cruise of this miniature “Great” lake. Check out some of the best ways to get out on Lake Champlain here!

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe, Vermont, renowned as a skiing paradise, is a year-round New England gem. In winter, the town truly shines.

Stowe Mountain Resort beckons with top-tier skiing and snowboarding, while the town, illuminated with holiday lights, offers a warm welcome with its quaint streets. Cozy up in local cafes or glide across the Stowe Ice Rink.

For a unique experience, embrace the Austrian charm of the Trapp Family Lodge, famous for its connections to “The Sound of Music.” I stayed here myself last spring and absolutely adored its classic, rustic vibe.

Autumn in Stowe is equally enchanting. The area boasts some of the most spectacular fall foliage, creating a vivid backdrop for seasonal activities.

A short drive to Waterbury brings you to the Cold Hollow Cider Mill, one of my favorite New England places to visit for its renowned apple cider donuts and a glimpse into traditional cider-making processes.

Stowe has miles of fantastic hiking trails, and in fall, the views are particularly exquisite. Not into hiking? View the colors from above via the Stowe Gondola Skyride, which will carry you to the top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak.

Woodstock, Vermont

Another place to visit in New England I recommend is the town of Woodstock, VT. This scenic New England destination is a breath of fresh air and absolutely one of my favorite New England towns to visit.

Its picturesque downtown area, complete with its own historic covered bridge, captures the region’s essence. Explore the unique shops and cozy cafes, all set within historic buildings, and each offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The Billings Farm & Museum is another highlight, showcasing Vermont’s agricultural history in an engaging way. You can meet the cows and see how an actual working farm is run. My little family had a blast here!

For nature enthusiasts, the stunning views at Quechee Gorge – Vermont’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’ – are essential. This spot offers impressive vistas and is perfect for photography and nature exploration.

Annually, thousands visit Woodstock to enjoy its seasonal beauty, from summer’s lush greenery to autumn’s foliage. It’s also known as a fabulous Christmas town , with its Victorian-style Wassail Weekend taking center stage.

Best Places to Visit in New England: New Hampshire

Portsmouth, new hampshire.

New Hampshire has a very small stretch of coastline and Portsmouth is a small city located here. Portsmouth is very historic, which is great for visitors to New England.  Settled in 1623, it is actually the third oldest city in the nation, and one of my favorite places to visit.

To explore some of this history, check out Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum with more than 30 restored buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries. This is a living history museum, too, with actors portraying historic residents of the town and what life may have been like.

In Portsmouth, you can also wander along the waterfront. For shopping and dining (Portsmouth has a very lively food scene) Market Square is the center of things. There are some pretty cool bars and breweries in Portsmouth, too!

North Conway, New Hampshire

New Hampshire’s White Mountains are impressive, exciting, and draw thousands of outdoorsy folk each year. These mountains, the tallest in New England, offer spectacular hiking and more.

North Conway is one of my favorite places for a New England vacation , providing the perfect gateway to the attractions of the White Mountain National Forest.

Conway is a mountain town providing a great mix of shopping, restaurants , and outdoor activities. The Saco River runs nearby, so Conway is a good jumping-off point for tubing or paddling in the river, with lots of cool places to stay .

Pop up to the towns of Bartlett and Jackson if you want to head even more into the mountains. Both are very nice areas with lots to do and see. Near Bartlett you can stop by Diana’s Baths, a beautiful area of cascading waterfalls and gentle pools. On a hot summer’s day, it’s the perfect place to cool off.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Of course, you’ll want to have America’s Hometown on your list of places to visit in New England!

One of the most charming historic towns in the region, Plymouth is full of historical sites like Plymouth Rock and Mayflower II , a scale replica of the historic vessel that carried the Pilgrims across the sea in 1620!

Also in Plymouth are a variety of fantastic restaurants and places to stay, including Mirbeau Inn and Spa. History, culture, and a little spa-cation? Why not?

The Lakes Region, New Hampshire

If you’re looking for a place to spend summer in New England , we can’t recommend enough the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Here you’ll find lakes on lakes on lakes.

In the summertime, these alluring bodies of water are refreshing and calm. They are perfect for swimming with family and friends, boating, or even as a backdrop to your barbecue.

The Lakes Region of NH includes the area surrounding Lake Winnipesaukee , Winnisquam Lake, Squam Lake, and Newfound Lake, among other smaller lakes and ponds (there are 273 in total!).

Some of the towns not to miss include adorable Meredith (right on Lake Winnipesaukee), fun Laconia, and pretty Center Harbor.

Best Places to Visit in New England: Massachusetts

Martha’s vineyard, massachusetts.

This island off the coast of Massachusetts is one of the most beautiful New England spots, especially for a summer trip.

Martha’s Vineyard is a fun getaway . While you’re not coming here for the nightlife, you’re coming here for relaxation and luxury (and delicious restaurants, beautiful inns and hotels, and cool vacation rentals !) Oak Bluffs is an especially cool town to explore.

One of the best things to do on the island is simply to rent a bike and go for a ride. Explore lighthouses as well as the six towns that make up the island. Shopping and art are also things you’ll find on Martha’s Vineyard in abundance.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

In Western Massachusetts is the region known as the Berkshires. This area is worlds away from Boston, but it’s not very far as the crow flies. If you’re looking for a bit of country living in MA, this is the region to visit.

This area is a popular destination for travelers, especially in the warmer months.

Culture abounds in the Berkshires, from spots like Mass MoCA and other museums to venue Tanglewood , where you can enjoy concerts from leading symphonies and folk artists like James Taylor to theatre productions put on by the well-known, professional Shakespeare & Company .

In addition to culture, you will find plenty of history. In Lenox, visit the Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum , an 1890s home that’s open for tours. If you have literary interest, you may also wish to stop by The Mount , Edith Wharton’s turn-of-the-century estate.

There are many opportunities for outdoor adventuring in the Berkshires. Plenty of hiking trails snake the region, bike routes, and even some ski resorts, plus plenty of cool vacation rentals , cute cabins , and great places to eat .

It’s a great place to visit in the winter , too!

Boston, Massachusetts

Some of the best New England vacations start in Boston, and many stay there! It’s one of my favorite places for a wonderful New England vacay.

Boston has so much to do for locals and visitors alike. Sports fans, history lovers, culture snobs? Whatever your pleasure, Boston has a site, walking tour, attraction, or event you’ll be psyched about.

Walking the Freedom Trail is a Boston bucket list item , whether you’re a history buff or not. This 2.5-mile path takes you past 16 historic sites, each a chapter in the story of America’s fight for independence, and it’s a super easy walk.

As you walk the trail, you’ll encounter iconic colonial sites like Boston Common, the Paul Revere House, Old North Church, and Bunker Hill Monument.

Salem is one of my all time favorite New England vacation destinations, for many reasons! For one, I’m a child of the 90s and thus, Hocus Pocus was a part of my early Halloween experience. Being able to explore the filming sites and see places in person for Halloween is a BLAST.

Secondly, it’s just a very cool seaside town to visit. There are a ton of excellent restaurants , neat shops, informative tours (including spooky ghost tours !), historical sites, and more.

I recommend everyone add Salem MA to their New England bucket list!

Best Places to Visit in New England: Maine

Acadia national park, maine.

Maine is home to some of the best vacation spots in New England and Acadia has to be near the top of that list. Acadia National Park is unlike any other part of New England. This breathtaking national park, spanning a vast 47,000 acres and renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty, ranks among the top 10 most visited national parks in the United States. Here, the mountains and the ocean collide, and visitors can engage in hiking, camping, and exploring, all with spectacular views surrounding them.

Speaking of views, one of the most memorable things to do in Acadia is to watch a sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. Did you know, this is one of the first spots the sun touches on the entire East Coast? So by witnessing a Cadillac Mountain sunrise, you will actually be one of the first people to greet the new day.

The town of Bar Harbor is also located on Mount Desert Island, just a few minutes from Acadia. Bar Harbor is filled with restaurants, shops, and great places to stay , as well as home to a beautiful harbor.

One of the best New England vacation destinations has to be the coast of Maine. But with hundreds of miles of coastline, where do you start? We recommend Maine’s Midcoast.

Generally speaking, this region runs from Brunswick (just north of Portland) up to around Belfast, just south of Mt. Desert Island. This whole area is beautiful and, as you can imagine, very coastal-focused.

In addition to museums, art, history, and food, MidCoast Maine is home to many exciting events and festivals.

As Visit Maine says: “Speaking of festivals, catch Weinerfest (that’s all things Dachshund) in Belfast, the  Maine Lobster Festival  in Rockland , and Damariscotta’s  Pumpkinfest . And let the good times and big cheese roll at the  Highland Games & Scottish Festival in Topsham.”

Most of all, you’ll want to get out on the water. Our favorite way is to head out on an overnight, multi-day schooner adventure ; it’s a very unique New England vacation idea!

You’ll need the jacket early with temperatures in the 40s, but can shed the layers in the afternoon. We will have abundant sunshine with highs climbing to the low 60s. It will still be a bit on the breezy side.

WEDNESDAY RAIN

A cold front will slide through Wednesday. Light rain will greet us early in the day, but we won’t see much. Showers will taper heading towards midday, leaving us with some breaks of sunshine and highs in the low 60s. An isolated shower or rumble of thunder is possible as the cold front moves through later in the day, but it looks like most will stay dry.

That front will usher in even colder temperatures for Thursday morning. A lot of towns will wake up with temperatures at or below freezing, we will also have to watch for some frost. Highs rebound into the mid 50s with plenty of sunshine. We warm to the 60s and 70s heading into the weekend, but there is the risk for a few showers on Sunday.

Cruises make the perfect family vacation, especially when traveling with teens. Teens can mix and mingle with others their age in teens-only clubs, play games, listen to music, or grab a pizza and watch a movie under the stars. If your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more.

The following lines offer the best cruises for teens and tweens, along with their parents.

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you'll also find the full-size MSC Formula Racer simulator, an interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The Young Club programming by MSC Cruises offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old tweens, while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions as well as video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also participate in fun themed events, karaoke, piloting practice at the Drone Academy and flash mobs – and there's a teens-only disco.

On MSC Seascape , teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. "Future" features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest-generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. "Chill Out" is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and pingpong. Meanwhile, "Music" is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. If all that isn't enough, Robotron, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting.

MSC World Europa boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in the fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new Teens Lab features an immersive area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race for drones. There's even more onboard fun at Z Active, a sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. Teens can also take a spin on the bumper cars at the MSC Sportplex.

MSC Euribia – the line's newest ship, which set sail on its inaugural cruise in June 2023 – has a total of 7,500-plus square feet of space dedicated to kids ages 0 to 17. The new Teens Club Extra Space offers three different areas: the Young Club (ages 12 to 14), the Teens Club (15 to 17) and the Teens Lab (12 to 17). Some of the activities include those found on other MSC ships, such as Z Active, Drone Academy 2.0 and the MSC Dance Crew competition. Teens will also have access to new video games; pingpong; World Quest, an interactive game show based on trivia and geography; and Caravaggio, an immersive spy game show about an art heist.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teens-only venue, Entourage, which caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 16 of the line's 19 ships – keeps teens busy in an adults-free lounge that's filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors on Norwegian Cruise Line plan activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise.

Norwegian Prima , the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including the three-level Prima Speedway. With cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour, this quarter-mile-long racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on Prima. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop and The Rush. Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge.

If that's not enough action, teens can also play The Bull's Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop. In the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you'll find more than a dozen attractions, including immersive simulator experiences, escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it's time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf.

Norwegian Viva, the second vessel in the Prima class, is set to launch in August 2023. As the newest ship in NCL's fleet, Viva will also feature these exciting high-tech attractions, including Viva Speedway. If you and your teens are fans of the movie "Beetlejuice," you're in for a treat: The Broadway musical adaptation will debut on the new ship.

The line's Breakaway Plus class – Norwegian Escape , Joy , Bliss and Encore – is also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions suited for active teens, such as go-kart tracks, outdoor laser tag and VR games in the Galaxy Pavilion.

Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream , the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There's a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor-outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a teens-only card or DisneyBand+. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a Paris artist's loft with neon signs and funk pop art.

For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There's also a lit-up dance floor for dance parties. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by.

On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include "Gotcha," a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – guests ages 13 to 17 won't want to miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon.

Royal Caribbean International

The newly updated space for teens 13 to 17 years old on Royal Caribbean International vessels is hidden behind a secret speakeasy entrance. The dedicated venue, which has a gaming lounge and music, is a cozy place to hang out to meet other teens on the ship. There's also an outdoor patio where you can relax in the sun or chill out under the stars. Teens will find planned activities throughout the day at the lounge, including sports tournaments, a nightly teen disco and themed parties.

Social 100 is an exclusive new space for ages 13 to 17 on Wonder of the Seas . The outdoor space sits next to the waterslides and boasts a hot tub, lawn games, cozy seating, a selfie area, and a bar serving zero-proof cocktails and shakes. The indoor part of Social 100 features a gaming area, foosball tables, a vending machine and more comfortable spaces for teens to mingle.

Teens have plenty of activities they can do with their families on Royal Caribbean's ships, especially on the new Icon of the Seas, the first vessel in the Icon class. Slated for its inaugural sailing in January 2024, Wonder of the Seas will be the  world's largest cruise ship .  Cruisers of all ages will have endless opportunities for fun with more venues, activities and attractions than you've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Teens and their parents will appreciate Chill Island, a three-level pool deck with the first swim-up bar at sea. The new water park, Thrill Island, boasts six waterslides, including exciting firsts at sea, such as Pressure Drop, the first open freefall slide. If that's not enough to get the adrenaline pumping, teens can check out Crown's Edge – a combination thrill ride, skywalk and ropes course – or other Royal Caribbean favorites like Adrenaline Peak, Sports Court, the FlowRider surf simulator or the reimagined mini-golf course.

The Kids Club on Holland America Line offers a fun supervised program for 13- to 17-year-old guests in an adult-free zone known as The Loft. The name is in the process of changing to High Score!, and you'll already find the updated concept on Oosterdam and Eurodam . The line's other ships will change over to the new venue throughout 2024. High Score! is a family game room that serves as a secret getaway for teens by day. In the evenings, entire families can come to play skeeball, board games and join in other activities.

The teens-only space (during the day) on Holland America Line resembles a New York artists loft where kids can listen to music, watch movies, play games and meet and hang out with same-age cruisers. Programs and activities at the current space, The Loft, include themed events, karaoke, a teen disco and nighttime activities such as Poker Night and video game tournaments. Youths can also participate in pingpong, basketball and other teens-only sporting events. If they still need more entertainment to keep them busy, the Kids Club offers origami lessons and watercolor painting as well as competitions in "Mario Kart," air hockey, foosball, pinball and more.

The Kids Club is complimentary for guests. The space is open daily, and you'll also find teen events around the ship. When it comes to dining, there are many teen-friendly dining options – where teens can even enjoy mocktails like nonalcoholic mojitos – at venues throughout the ship.

If you're cruising to Alaska with Holland America or other adventure-filled destinations, look for excursions that will appeal to younger family members like zip lining tours, trail hikes, float trips, helicopter tours and wilderness safaris. Alaska is a teen favorite, especially in Skagway (one of Alaska's top destinations ), where travelers can get a thrill out of dog mushing with a team of Alaskan huskies, taking a ride on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, or going on a rock climbing excursion.

The modern Beach House lounge is the go-to place for passengers ages 13 to 17 to socialize and meet others their age when sailing on a Princess Cruises ship. Fun activities for teens include late-night movies and tournaments where they can challenge their peers in video games or at air hockey, foosball and table tennis. For more energetic activities, join in the fun during indoor dodgeball and basketball games. Or, learn new dance moves from some of the dancers in the crew, then hit the dance floor for one of the competitions. At the "Rock the Boat Party," teenagers can dress up and party the night away with mocktails and new friends on the ship.

"Movies Under the Stars" is one of Princess' signature events. Guests can watch movies, sporting events and concerts while bundled up with cozy blankets on the pool deck outdoors. Teens will enjoy the complimentary snacks – not to mention the special movie nights designed with them in mind, such as "Scary Movie Night." You might even find teen makeovers and glitter tattoos some evenings on the ship.

The line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess , Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – offer the most activities for teens, but all of the ships in the fleet host youth programs in partnership with Discovery, along with plenty of other family-friendly activities. These offerings include Discovery Family and Animal Planet shore excursions and onboard entertainment like "The Voice of the Ocean," a musical competition.

Parents will be able to keep track of their busy teens anywhere on the ship with the state-of-the-art Princess MedallionClass system. The quarter-size wearable medallion and accompanying app allow guests to personalize their itinerary and locate family members and friends on board.

When Sun Princess launches in February 2024, as the first vessel in the line's Sphere class, it will feature Park19. This top-deck family activity zone boasts many outdoor adventures, including Sea Breeze – the first Rollglider at sea. The ADA-accessible seated ride offers a hang-gliding experience with panoramic views of the ocean and ports of call. Families and teens can also check out the climbing obstacle course, cargo nets and lookout points. The ship also has a recreational court – which offers pingpong, shuffleboard, fitness classes and more – and a splash zone where you can cool off after all the outdoor activities.

Inside Sun Princess, tweens and teens will find two centers just for them: Neon Grove and The Underground. Both spaces offer cozy and colorful areas for young adults to hang out, socialize, and play video games on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. They'll also find foosball, skeeball and air hockey on top of planned activities like movie nights, dance parties and scavenger hunts.

Adventures by Disney

Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant.

If you're sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example, guests can choose between various exciting excursions. While you're docked in Strasbourg, France , for the day, teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum. Another choice here is to visit Germany's Europa-Park, a one-of-a-kind theme park located between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm.

Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don't have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties.

In destinations like Antarctica, the Adriatic and the Galápagos Islands , expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides.

Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, and for expeditions to the polar regions, kids need to be 10 years of age or older.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Celebration, which launched in November 2022, is the line's newest Excel-class ship. It features an expanded family and youth program, including its offerings for teens. The line also rolled out the new program fleetwide in spring 2023.

The Carnival Cruise Line teen programming at Circle "C" is for tweens ages 12 to 14, while Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. In these venues you'll find entertainment like themed dance parties – and even a Carnival prom – as well as video games, movies and karaoke. Circle "C" stands for "Cruise, chill and connect," and that's what teens can do in this colorful, contemporary space with engaging counselors. New activities include anime drawing lessons and pop culture games at Circle "C." Older teens can foster new friendships while engaging in Japanese crafts and authentic tea ceremonies at Club O2.

Teens will appreciate Carnival's onboard water park, Waterworks, which includes a splash park and slides. Carnival Panorama even has the trampoline park Skyzone. Teenage passengers won't want to miss the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT, on Excel-class ships: Mardi Gras , Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee, scheduled to launch in December 2023.

For even more action, Vista-class ships feature Skyride. This two-lane, bike-like ride is suspended above the top deck of the ships and extends out over the ocean. More indoor fun can be found at Thrill Theater (on Horizon and Vista ), an immersive cinematic experience where you'll feel the seat rumble, the wind blow through your hair and even a spritz of water during the action-packed video.

This line's Teen Club features activities focused on kids 13 to 17. Some of the events offered for teens in the Camp at Sea program on Celebrity Cruises range from video game tournaments and sports competitions to culinary classes and silent disco parties. Teen cruisers can even book glass-blowing classes on Celebrity Solstice , Equinox and Eclipse . The offerings for young passengers are similar at either The Basement on Edge-series ships ( Edge , Apex , Beyond and Ascent, set to launch in November 2023) or at X Club on Solstice- and Millennium-class ships. Note, however, the line's three Galápagos expedition vessels do not have the teen venues. Families who need accessible accommodations, activities and programs will also find autism-friendly cruises on Celebrity.

When it comes to pampering, Celebrity's spas offer spa menus for 13- to 17-year-olds. Teens can book facials that are designed for young sensitive skin or have express pedicures and manicures. When you're ready to relax, schedule a two-by-two massage, where parents and kids can have a side-by-side treatment.

Celebrity also offers family-focused excursions that highlight cultural attractions, wildlife sightings and adventure. Some of these tours include seeing gentoo, king and Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands; taking an aerial tram through the treetop canopies of a rainforest in Costa Rica ; and going on a small culinary or sightseeing group excursion in Europe and other destinations around the world. Cunard Line

Cunard Line offers programs and activities for passengers ages 13 to 17 years old in its Teen Zone. This dedicated space is a place for teens to hang out with cruisers their own age and play video and team games, table tennis, and more. On the first day of the cruise, you'll find an activity program for young guests delivered to the stateroom so your teens can plan out their vacation experience, which may include entertaining theme days, deck sports, quizzes and dancing at the disco.
