The Witcher: Ciri’s Powers, Explained

Ciri doesn't use magic like the sorceresses Triss and Yen. Instead, her powers have a lot to do with her heritage and the Elder Blood's origins.

There is one constant in the Witcher series besides Geralt fighting monsters, and it's that everyone is always after Ciri. Whether it's the Wild Hunt or the Emperor of Nilfgaard, there's always someone who wants to control her for her incredible powers. She isn't a sorceress like Yennifer or Phillipa, who had to learn their talents to get to where they are. Instead, Ciri's power comes to her naturally thanks to her Elder Blood lineage. There's an entire history behind it which is somewhat general in its explanation across The Witcher 3 and even the Netflix series -- at least so far.

Ciri's powers don't involve raining fireballs on her enemies or shooting out electricity in the traditional mage and sorceress sense. Her power is far greater, having the ability to travel across dimensions and worlds and even through time itself. It's an innate power the women of her family are born with, which dates back to the elves, the original members of which are from the same group as the true form of the Wild Hunt.

The Aen Elle are the original race of elves whose highest mages were, in the past, able to open portals across worlds. This allowed them to leave their dying world for new ones: the one players know of from the games, which Aen Sidhe struggle on , and the one the true Aen Elle still inhabits. However, once the Conjunction of Spheres happened, they mostly lost this power for unknown reasons. The few who still possessed it weren't nearly as powerful as they used to be and the Aen Elle began tracking lineages, controlling relationships and the breeding of those with the Elder Blood genes. This was done in hopes of preserving it and one day regaining their lost power. This is where the Elder Blood lineage starts and ties into the information given by Avallac'h in The Witcher 3 .

The main lineage Ciri hails from is Lara Dorren's genes. Lara Dorren was the daughter of the late Aen Elle King, Auberon, who fell in love and ran off with a human sorcerer named Cregennan, which was a controversial move. Both humans and elves hated each other immensely, although the elves had the addition of worrying about the Elder Blood gene. She gave birth to Riannon, a half-elf, who was adopted by the then-Queen of Redania after her mother died. Riannon later had two children of her own. She also ended up with a third adopted child after the rebel Falka, who also carried Elder Blood genes, lost her war. From there, the lineage splits off between the children until it finally comes back together with the rulers Cintra.

Both sides, kings and queens, carried the gene which only got more powerful in the females of the family. Ciri's mother, Pavetta, was the first to show the manifestation of the Elder Blood, as seen in The Witcher Season 1 during the Cintra banquet. It only got more powerful when it passed on to Ciri. While she doesn't have complete control over her power, she is capable of traveling across space and time with ease and does so in the novels. It's also how she reappeared in The Witcher 3, which kicks off the plot. Her ability is also part of the prophecy of Ithilnne, an elven oracle, about the White Frost. Ciri can close the portal from the world it comes from and may do so at the end of The Witcher 3 .

Ciri's powers pre-date the current world of the Witcher's magic, which came about from the Conjunction of Spheres. Her talents are unique to the point where the Aen Elle use what little power they have left to chase her across dimensions to re-acquire them, despite disliking humans. Even Avallac'h mentions her resemblance to Lara Dorren, whom she hails from. It's one more interesting piece of lore in the series with far more detail than just this behind it.

Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (better known as Ciri ), was born in 1252 or 1253 , [4] and most likely during the Belleteyn holiday. [5] She was the sole princess of Cintra , the daughter of Pavetta and Emhyr var Emreis (who was using the alias "Duny" at the time) as well as Queen Calanthe 's granddaughter.

After Geralt of Rivia helped lift Duny's curse, Duny asked what reward the witcher would like and Geralt invoked the Law of Surprise , as it turned out Pavetta was pregnant with Ciri, unbeknownst to Duny.

Biography [ ]

Ciri was born in Skellige in Belleteyn of the following year [6] and initially, Calanthe ordered her advisor Mousesack to kill Geralt, [7] wishing to break free from the Law of Surprise. Mousesack was ready to go, as nobody refused the queen, but when he was summoned a short time later Calanthe retracted the order without explanation. [8]

Growing up, not much is known about Ciri's relationship with her parents, though it appeared Pavetta adored her daughter, with others remarking how it was rare for her to be parted from Ciri. However, this didn't stop Pavetta from secretly sending Ciri ashore just as the small family was set to sail out from Skellige to Cintra, against Calanthe 's wishes, who wished for them all to stay. Shortly after, Pavetta and Duny died at sea around the Sedna Abyss , making Ciri an orphan before she was 5 years old. Angry at her nephew-in-law, Crach an Craite , for letting them sail out, Calanthe then had Crach swear a blood oath that he'd always protect Ciri before deciding to forbid Ciri from visiting the isles again. However, this ban only lasted 6 months before Calanthe let Ciri visit Skellige once more every summer and winter. [9]

Cintra's Princess [ ]

With the death of her mother, Ciri was now the only remaining heir to Cintra and thus Calanthe took special care to raise her granddaughter. Despite Calanthe's attempts to keep Ciri shielded from learning about being a Child of Surprise and that she was destined to be a witcher since birth, Ciri's nanny told the young girl all about a white-haired witcher, and that he'd one day come for her to be taken away to be trained as one as well. When Calanthe found out she was furious but by then the seeds had been sown and Ciri began to firmly believe that was her destiny. [8]

Then, 6 years almost to the day when Duny's curse was lifted, Geralt returned to Cintra but Calanthe, not wishing to lose her only remaining descendant, hid Ciri amongst a group of boys and had them playing around in the moat outside the castle when Geralt dropped in, who erroneously believed Pavetta had a son and wondered which one "he" was in the group. Despite this, he refused to take any child with him and left without even learning the true identity of Pavetta's child.

Entering Brokilon [ ]

Shortly after, Calanthe arranged an engagement between Ciri and Windhalm of Attre , a now 20 year old who once vied for Pavetta's hand 7 years prior. However, Calanthe had a change in heart and called off the engagement years later [6] before setting up another one, this time to Kistrin , the sole prince of Verden . However, the now 10 year old Ciri wasn't fond of this idea or of Kistrin and, no sooner had she arrived in Verden in 1263 to meet her suitor and his family, did she escape with aid from a teenage squire . This plan went awry when they mistakenly ended up in the dreaded Brokilon region, a forest off-limits to anyone not friends with the dryads that lived there. While normally the dryads shot to kill on sight, Ciri wasn't noticed by them, though the squire and the search party following them weren't so lucky and were killed.

While she wandered alone deeper into the dangerous forest, she was spotted by a giant centipede and almost met her death there when her screams were heard by Geralt and Braenn who were coincidentally nearby. After they killed the giant centipede though, Ciri tried to take off but immediately stopped when Braenn nearly hit her with an arrow. Despite this, the young princess refused to answer them and went as far as stating she'd have both of them beheaded before eventually joining them in their trek to Duén Canell , all the while telling Geralt how she didn't want a husband and threatening to bite Geralt to get him to answer her questions before the witcher threatened to whip her with his belt, making her behave politely the rest of the trip.

When the group arrived in Duén Canell, Ciri met the injured Freixenet , who also wished to beat the young princess for running away, before the governor revealed that Geralt was a witcher. Before Ciri could ask further on this, Braenn started to lead the princess away and Ciri realized they were preparing to make her a dryad and began to cry, though allowed herself to be led away.

A few hours later, Ciri sat with the dryad queen, Eithné , in her home. As Geralt arrived to discuss his reason for being sent to Brokilon, it eventually turned to Ciri, who was to be made a dryad. However, Ciri had already told Eithné something she hadn't revealed to Geralt yet: that she was destined to be a witcher and on learning who Geralt was, she realized she was destined to him. As Geralt made to leave rather than watch the young girl drink the Water of Brokilon that'd erase all her previous memories, Ciri begged him to stay and so he did for her sake. As he watched though, Ciri didn't show any of the normal signs after drinking the water and when the dryad queen asked the young girl who she wanted to go with, she revealed she still wished to go with Geralt, and thus the queen allowed the two to leave.

Geralt, now realizing Ciri was his Child of Surprise, traveled with her out of the forest, though when he took off east to Brugge Ciri appeared uncomfortable, remarking she felt they were going the wrong way, but followed anyways. A short time later it appeared she was correct: they ran into a group of King Ervyll 's soldiers who were staging a merchant robbery as an act by the dryads. Not aware of the situation, Ciri suddenly remarked the dryads couldn't have done it as the tree was cut down, causing the men to try and kill her and Geralt, but Geralt held them off as he demanded she run. Instead of running far though, Ciri instead took an earlier story Geralt told to heart and climbed all the way up a tree. After the mercenaries were killed off by Geralt, nearby dryads, and the arrival of Mousesack, Ciri rejoined them, though the druid remarked Calanthe would probably be ready to spank the girl despite being sent by Calanthe to call off Ciri and Kistrin's engagement.

That night though, Geralt tried to take off once more without Ciri, who awoke after he rode off and yelled after him not to go and that she was his destiny. However, Geralt didn't turn around, leaving Mousesack to take her back to Cintra. [8]

Adventures in Skellige [ ]

Shortly after Ciri traveled back to Skellige and at one point became extremely infatuated with one of the kingdom's famous warriors, Olaf Stigvason . However, this love was never meant to be as he was 35 years old, married, and with children older than Ciri. Distraught at this, Ciri decided she'd commit suicide by drowning and waited for favorable weather conditions to do so. This took too long though and during the wait, she was able to overcome her infatuation with the warrior. [6]

Sometime later that season, she saw some of the boys, including a 15 year old Hjalmar an Craite , playing a game on the ice where they'd try to see how many rocks in a row they could jump over while skating. Hjalmar held the current record until Ciri, extremely agile and fast, beat it. Not to be outdone, Hjalmar tried to beat Ciri's record but smashed into the ice instead, breaking several bones in the process. Despite this, Hjalmar held no grudges against Ciri and the young girl regularly visited him while he healed. Being young and naïve, the two soon got "engaged" but as soon as Crach heard of this he promptly broke them up as Calanthe had other plans in the works to marry Ciri off and the young girl was dragged back home to Cintra by her grandmother. [9]

Shortly after, Calanthe arranged Ciri's third official engagement: this time to the 9 year old Radovid V of Redania . Before the children ever had a chance to meet though, Radovid's father, Vizimir II , called off the engagement 6 months later. [6]

Fall of Cintra [ ]

In 1263 , the Nilfgaardian Empire , which had been taking over kingdoms in the south for some time, eventually decided to move on Cintra. During the final push, Ciri found herself barricaded in the capital 's castle with her grandmother and many of the nobles, with no chance of surviving as it was only a matter of time when the Nilfgaardian soldiers would break in. Unknown to her and her grandmother, there was also a Nilfgaardian spy in the castle and so when Calanthe had some of her soldiers try to flee with the young Ciri, the spy signaled to the invaders that she was escaping. [9]

Ciri's escorts ran into Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach 's group and a chase through the burning city unfolded before Cahir's men eventually caught up with the Cintran guards and a fight ensued. As both Nilfgaardians and Cintrans alike died, a frightened Ciri was dropped to the ground and barely escaped from being stabbed herself. Still in a daze, Ciri soon found herself alone with Cahir, the only other survivor out of the fight and distinguished by his winged helmet. As he picked up Ciri, she began to scream before fainting. A short time later she came to as Cahir had managed to escape the city with her, but with Cahir not knowing her language, nothing helped ease her mind. Later that night, when the two went to sleep, she managed to slip away from him.

Now alone, Ciri ended up wandering the forests of Riverdell for two weeks, staying with a family of four in Kagen who taught her to spin yarn, before finding a group of fugitives and staying with them for a month [10] before she was eventually taken in by druids , as they tended to take in homeless children as a result of the war. [8] A short time later, Goldencheeks took her in and so Ciri moved in with the woman and her family in Lower Sodden . While Ciri didn't reveal who she was and where she was from, Goldencheeks took a liking to the girl over the next six months, [10] especially as she herself couldn't bear anymore children and only had sons. As fate would have it though, Goldencheeks' husband, Yurga , was out on a trip during this time and was rescued by Geralt, who didn't know what else to ask for as a reward and so enacted the Law of Surprise. When Yurga brought the witcher back to his place in 1264 and learned of the unexpected girl his wife had taken in, Ciri suddenly spotted Geralt and cried out to him before the two ran to each other, reuniting once more. [8]

Training at Kaer Morhen [ ]

In 1265 , with Geralt now accepting Ciri as his destiny, he took the young girl with him to Kaer Morhen , both to keep her in hiding and to train her to be a witcher. During the trip there, Ciri was often plagued by nightmares of the knight with the winged helmet and Geralt had to reassure her everything was ok while holding her close until she fell asleep. When they finally arrived that autumn, the princess was initially afraid of the witchers but as soon as Geralt confirmed she was their destiny she began to see the small group as family and friends. That same night that they arrived though, the witchers quickly learned Ciri was no ordinary child. Thirsty, Ciri grabbed the nearest drink off the table, and before the witchers could stop her, she accidentally drank White Seagull which, combined with her Elder Blood , sent Ciri into a trance, speaking in another voice but incoherently. [10]

A bit uneasy by this but not able to do anything else, the witchers, including Geralt, Vesemir , Lambert , Eskel , and Coën , began to train Ciri as a witcher. They used special mushrooms and herbs found in the valley to accelerate both her physical and hormonal progression as a witcher, allowing her much more strength and agility for her size. However, during one training episode she fell and once more went into an incomprehensible trance. It was only the third one, during one of her many nightmares, that she began to speak coherently, prophesying Coën's and Geralt's deaths. However like all the previous ones, Ciri never remembered them nor what she said so the witchers never told her about the episodes.

Regardless, the witchers needed help understanding what was happening to Ciri and so in 1265 they sent for the sorceress Triss Merigold , as Geralt didn't wish to involve Yennefer due to how they last split up. By December, Triss arrived in time to see a now 12 year old Ciri running the Trail , an obstacle course around the keep, but as Ciri made to jump the Gullet portion, she landed wrong and Triss ran over. While initially scared of the unknown woman, Ciri eventually let the sorceress heal her wound before the two made their way to the keep. As they did so, Triss witnessed firsthand one of Ciri's trances, this time predicting Triss' death, before Ciri woke up, believing she'd fallen asleep.

The next day, Triss went with Ciri to her room to inspect the young girl while fixing up her clothes, which had been haphazardly put together by Vesemir. As they talked, Ciri eventually confided she was scared of some of the training equipment before revealing something she'd been too embarrassed to bring up to the men: her menstruation had begun and, with no other women around, had no idea what was going on. With Triss' guidance, Ciri went and informed the witchers that she was "indisposed" and wouldn't be doing any physical training until it'd passed. Then, following Triss' earlier instructions, asked for Triss to be allowed to stay, before excusing herself. With that, Triss set forth a condition that the witchers stop feeding Ciri their special herbs and mushrooms as, while they helped with fitness and building muscle, they could have adverse effects on Ciri's womanly attributes as she grew up.

On Midwinter night, as Coën kept Ciri distracted with a game, Triss revealed Ciri was a Source , leading to initial denial as the witchers pointed out Ciri couldn't even do basic signs . However, Triss revealed that Sources were only transmitters of magic and therefore had no actual control over it: if they tried to force it nothing came out, but a strong emotion could unexpectedly flatten half a town. After the witchers revealed to Triss Ciri's past trances, Coën came through with Ciri and Triss gave the young girl White Seagull to send her into a trance once more, with the aim to find out what was speaking through her. Triss soon learned though that whatever was speaking through Ciri was extremely powerful, too powerful for Triss to control and stop it if it ever burst through Ciri. Naturally, Ciri didn't remember any of it and, despite not knowing enough Elder Speech to make sentences, as she was coming out of the trance she spoke in the tongue to say "something is ending." Knowing they needed help from a more experienced mage, Geralt finally relented in asking for Yennefer's help come spring, as they planned to take Ciri to Ellander 's Temple of Melitele for schooling.

As the winter went on, Ciri continued her witcher training while also taking Elder Speech lessons from Triss, the latter of whom kept an eye on the girl every day and night to make sure whatever spoke through Ciri didn't come back, while also soothing her back to sleep when she woke up from nightmares. At one point the witchers even made a custom sword for Ciri to match her build.

One night in the middle of February 1266 though, Ciri slipped down and eavesdropped on a conversation Triss was having with the witchers in regards to their indifference to politics and went into detail about what happened during the Battle of Sodden Hill . As Ciri ran in, proclaiming she'd stand by Triss in fighting the Nilfgaardians as they'd killed her grandmother, Ciri revealed she thought she was training to kill, as she wanted to kill the winged helmet knight that haunted her dreams. Geralt sharply chastised her, informing her they were training her to save lives, not to kill out of fear and hatred, before sending her out of the room.

Distraught, Ciri ran out into the courtyard and stopped on the ledge of one of the walls where she inspected her sword. As Geralt and Triss approached, she cried out that nobody was going to take her sword from her, but as she moved, she lost her footing and almost fell to her death but Geralt caught her in the nick of time. After speaking comforting words to Ciri, the three agreed it was time to head south to the temple in Ellander. [10]

Traveling to Ellander [ ]

As the trio made their way through Kaedwen , Triss suddenly fell ill from food poisoning, preventing them from being able to ride for very long as they had to keep making stops for her. At one point they reached an outpost that was overflowing with merchants and soldiers and, despite Geralt sending Ciri to look after Triss, the girl showed back up in time to overhear one of the commandants vehemently proclaiming all nonhumans were in cahoots with the Scoia'tael and Nilfgaard had been backing them. Before more could be said, the trio were asked to leave as, despite Triss not being contagious, the soldiers didn't want to take the chance. One of the soldiers though pointed them in the direction of a convoy that was headed in the same general direction and who might be able to better assist Triss.

Within a day, they'd caught up with the convoy who were made up of old dwarven acquaintances of Geralt's and were now following King Henselt 's orders to deliver a special order. As they traveled with Yarpen Zigrin and his group , Ciri eavesdropped a few times on their conversations, particularly when Scoia'tael were mentioned, as Yarpen was adamantly against them, despite being nonhuman himself.

At one point, when Geralt headed to the back of the convoy, Ciri sat up front with Yarpen and, after being shown how to steer the wagon, asked Yarpen about his earlier conversation with Geralt, namely what he meant by the witcher being indifferent before she figured out that Yarpen was between a rock and hard place: being nonhuman he wasn't accepted by humans but by helping a human king, he was a traitor in the Scoia'tael eyes.

As the trip continued, she and Geralt both took care of the still ailing, but now recovering, Triss. However, Ciri became annoyed when the other dwarves wrongly assumed that Triss and Geralt were a couple, and was further annoyed with Triss when the sorceress appeared to try and snuggle up rather too much to Geralt when they helped bathe her. After being asked by Geralt to leave during one such episode, Ciri bumped into Yarpen and asked who was right in the fight between the Scoia'tael and humans. After a while, Yarpen finally noted that he'd like to live in a way where he didn't have to ask for forgiveness and everyone would learn to live next to each other. With that, Ciri remarked how Yarpen wasn't all that different from her.

The next day, Geralt let Ciri ride a bit ahead of the convoy but, being anxious just to run off for a short while, she galloped way ahead of the convoy to take in the silence and surroundings and soon made her way a bit off the main road. As she enjoyed the forest area she began to think how she'd never be indifferent, that she intended to save defenseless people from evil, like the horrors she saw during the war, and couldn't understand why Geralt and the other witchers were neutral about it.

While thinking this over, she suddenly ducked down beneath a bush and none too soon as, across the clearing, a large band of Scoia'tael appeared and began to move through the area. When they were finally gone and she felt safe, Ciri popped back up only for Geralt to grab her to keep her from screaming in surprise. As Geralt instructed her back to the horses, he told her not to say a word of what she saw to the others and and that the trio would depart from the convoy tomorrow. Infuriated and not understanding his indifference in this, Ciri questioned Geralt about it, who calmly told her the Scoia'tael group wasn't there for the convoy, but something else. He then led her to Shaerrawedd , an ancient elven palace now in ruins. However, in the center of the ruins still remained a statue of Aelirenn , an elf that'd tried to lead one last desperate battle against humans 200 years ago. While the elders didn't wish to, feeling they could wait out humanity with their long lifespans, Aelirenn was able to rally most of the younger elves, and the only ones able to still have offspring. The fight ended in a massacre and thus doomed the elven race to annihilation.

Finally understanding that witcher neutrality wasn't about being insensitive but rather to prevent more unnecessary massacres, Ciri then asked to take one of the special roses to remember. As she did though, she pricked herself and suddenly realized the rest of the convoy was under attack and the two galloped back to get to Triss.

As the two arrived, the convoy was indeed under attack by Scoia'tael and, ignoring Geralt's orders to head into the woods, Ciri hurried to Triss and pulled her into cover while the fighting continued all around them. While initially protected by the others around her, soon Ciri found herself alone, face to face with an elf, and now without her sword. As the elf moved in though, she spotted Shaerrawedd's rose on Ciri, causing enough hesitation for Geralt to come from behind and kill the elf before Ciri passed out. When she came to, the group had been rescued by Dun Banner , another Kaedwenian military unit, but soon learned the whole convoy had been a trap: wanting to test Yarpen's loyalty, they were actually given common stone to transport while another tipped off the Scoia'tael about the "special" convoy so they'd attack it. As Geralt and Ciri looked on at the fallen acquaintances and Scoia'tael members, Geralt threw the now blood stained rose onto the elf he'd killed earlier to protect Ciri, with Ciri saying goodbye as Geralt asked for forgiveness. [10]

Training with Yennefer [ ]

After the chaos with the convoy, the three had a far more peaceful trip to the Temple of Melitele and once there, Geralt left Ciri in Nenneke 's care, while he wrote to Yennefer about the situation and asked for her help in teaching Ciri.

While Yennefer made her way to the temple, Ciri was treated like any other pupil, sleeping in a dormitory with the other students, while learning about history, nature, poetry, prose, runes, the Elder Speech , and doing chores. When she could, she'd also write to Geralt to tell him about the goings-on.

After Yennefer arrived, Ciri at first openly didn't like her as the sorceress was quite cold, though they quickly started to develop a mother-daughter bond, and she spent more and more time with the sorceress, doing chores only two days a week, and seeing her friends rarely. Yennefer pushed the girl putting her through many tests, and taught her about muscles and bones, about balance and how to control one's breathing. She also taught Ciri about magic and Chaos and how to control it. One night, after being worn out from several days of intense training with Yennefer, she had a dream about Geralt, Shani and Dandelion , awaking to Yennefer arguing with Nenneke about the sorceress' training methods, and so forced herself back to sleep. Some time later, while doing chores with her new friends Iola the Second and Eurneid , she was told about the rising political tension and the possibility of a second northern war , which made her curious so she went and saw Jarre , Nenneke's ward. He told her of the geography of the area, and the potential of the second war, which he believed was unlikely. After Jarre's awkward flirting started to make Ciri irritated, she ran to Yennefer who told her they were to leave the following morning, for solitude at the magic school of Aretuza . [10]

Journey to Aretuza [ ]

In late June 1267 , after a night at an inn in Ellander , Ciri and Yennefer were preparing to leave when Ciri entered a trance and foretold the messenger Aplegatt of his death on hot sands. The following night was spent at an inn in the Temerian town of Anchor . After three days more ride, they arrived in Gors Velen , where Yennefer hid Ciri's identity so they could visit Giancardi Bank , where Molnar Giancardi told them of the politics of the continent and paid for Ciri's tuition in Ellander, and her future tuition at Aretuza. Molnar then summoned Fabio Sachs , his apprentice who could take Ciri on a tour of the city. They saw the fish market and then Fabio showed her Thanedd Island from the city walls. Finally they went to the marketplace , where many great wonders amazed the girl, such as camels. After listening to a priest preach about the Aretuza mages, the holy man proceeded to grope Ciri, who screamed at him in the square, only calmed by Fabio taking her for food. As Fabio went to get his fortune told, Ciri lapsed into another trance and foretold his life as an explorer and death in an unnamed continent . While continuing to look through the market, the two came across a man advertising his " basilisk " from Zerrikania , which intrigued Ciri, so they went in. The basilisk ended up being a wyvern , which Ciri kept mentioning to the man, to the point of him of challenging her to survive the creature's venom as a test. She freely walked up and proved the man wrong, though as she walked back the wyvern broke out of its small cage, attacking its owner. Ciri, using her training from Kaer Morhen, made quick work of the creature, and luckily protecting her identity, the crowd thought it was the work of a young squire standing nearby. Angry at her for "angering the beast", the crowd chased her away from the market, and she used the amulet given to her by Yennefer for disguisement, giving off magical interference that summoned Tissaia de Vries and Margarita Laux-Antille . They believed Ciri was an escaped student from Aretuza and so Tissaia put her under a paralysis spell and with Fabio's advice carried the girl to Giancardi Bank, where Yennefer confirmed her identity. [11]

Tissaia apologised and invited them to The Silver Heron inn, where they all proceeded to spend several hours bathing. As the sorceresses started to get drunk, Ciri left the cellar and convinced the innkeeper to give her a horse , left a note for Yennefer, and rode west toward Geralt's last known location, Hirundum . Throughout the stormy trip she had flashbacks to Cintra and the black knight, to Shaerrawedd, and then even saw glimpses of the Wild Hunt attempting to recruit her. By the time she arrived at the farm and saw Geralt and then Yennefer, who followed her via portal, she was extremely exhausted and fainted. The following morning she snuck out of the Hofmeier house and eavesdropped on her two mentors talking, which was quickly caught onto by Dandelion , the bard friend of Geralt. Eventually things were summarized and Yennefer invited Ciri and the witcher to the Conclave of Mages on Thanedd.

Thanedd Coup [ ]

After arriving on Thanedd on the last day of the month, and after the Aretuza evening ball, Ciri awoke in the early hours of the morning to the sounds of fighting; the Northern allied mages were arresting the others secretly allied with Nilfgaard. Yennefer guided the young girl through the palace, until they reached Philippa Eilhart and Ciri, in a trance, confirmed the truth behind the attack in Dol Angra , where Demavend had attempted to incite a war against Nilfgaard. However, as it'd been a technical attack against the Empire, Emhyr's troops answered back and began to push into Aedirn and Lyria . She then further revealed that King Vizimir II had been assassinated during the night. Following her recovery, a fight broke out in Garstang , and Yennefer and Ciri were forced to flee, only to be attacked by an elven assassin. Yennefer killed the elf and told Ciri to get down to Loxia , as she could find refuge their with Margarita Laux-Antille. Almost immediately after leaving the room, she was spotted by the mage Rience and two of his elven accomplances, and chased toward a high balcony where, using her nimbleness and bravery, she was able to escape their clutches. She was grabbed by Artaud Terranova , but she was rescued by Geralt and Philippa. Geralt got Ciri on her horse and set her out while he went to rescue Yennefer. Ciri was pursued by Cahir, but thanks to her training, she was able to defeat him in combat, but seeing him without his helm, seeing a normal man instead of a figure from her nightmares, she chose not to kill him, before fleeing. She entered Tor Lara and went through the portal in the tower , but because of it's unpredictable nature, it randomly sent Ciri to the Korath desert .

Unaware of where she was and without obvious recourse, the girl decided to make her way out of the wasteland by heading west. Unfortunately, she wandered around in circles for some time before deciding to use the stars as a guide. She nearly died of exhaustion, dehydration and starvation. Luckily for her, she met a unicorn whom she nicknamed Little Horse that helped her out of the desert. She used fire magic to heal her companion, and while other the unicorns, quietly observing her actions, were unpleased with her utilising its power, they decided not to kill her because she saved one of their own. Eventually Ciri fell unconscious due to pyromantic visions; the experience in tapping into such power and relinquishing it left her psychologically numb. [11]

The Rats [ ]

The next day, Sir Sweers and the Trappers found her and (after a short conflict with one of Sweers' sworn enemies, the House of Varnhagen ) brought her to safety in Glyswen . Ciri, who was still undergoing an emotional tribulation, then helped the Rats , a group of ne'er-do-wells, to rescue their member Kayleigh . She named herself Falka after the woman she saw in the pyromantic visions . That night, Kayleigh wanted to "thank" Ciri by trying to force her to have sex with him, but he was stopped by Mistle who wanted Ciri for her own. Despite sexual assaults, Ciri stayed with the Rats and even developed a romantic relationship with Mistle, despite sometimes claiming she did no longer like what Mistle had done to her. [11]

During their travels, the Rats attacked a convoy of Baron of Casadei 's daughter. The baron hired a bounty hunter Leo Bonhart to capture her alive; however, Bonhart was already hired by Stefan Skellen who wanted her to be killed [12] so that the monarchy could be overthrown. [2]

Bonhart killed the Rats and cut off their heads after their deaths. The hunter neither killed Ciri, nor brought her to Baron Casadei, therefore not fullfilling both contracts. Instead he imprisoned her for some time, beating her, mistreating and forcing her to kill in the arena at Claremont , which belonged to his cousin Houvenaghel .

On Velen Ciri managed to escape with the help of Vattier 's spy Neratin Ceka when Bonhart had taken her to the village of Unicorn on the eve of the equinox . He had gone here to meet with Skellen and Rience and possibly negotiate some terms to release Ciri. Bonhart then killed Neratin, and Skellen seriously wounded Ciri, disfiguring her with an orion as she fled the village on her mare, Kelpie .

Later, she was found, near death by Vysogota of Corvo , who hid and healed her at his hermitage in the Pereplut swamp. She stayed with Vysogota until shortly after Saovine when she set off to find the Swallow's Tower , believed to be a twin tower to Tor Lara, so that she could return to Thanedd. Together with Skellen and Rience, Bonhart tried to hunt her down on the order of Vilgefortz , but she managed to escape due to the intervention of the Wild Hunt which scared off Bonhart's horse. Ciri entered the tower and was teleported to the world of the Aen Elle elves. [9]

The Aen Elle [ ]

There she was greeted by Avallac'h , an Aen Saevherne . He explained to her that she had to 'pay the debt' referring to the perceived loss to the Aen Elle when Lara Dorren took Cregennan of Lod as her lover. The elves believed that the latter had 'stolen' Elder Blood from them by marrying Lara. To atone for that 'crime' Avallac'h wanted Ciri to beget a child with Auberon Muircetach , the king of the Aen Elle. That being the only way Avallac'h would let her return to her own world. On their way to Tir ná Lia , the Aen Elle capital, they met Eredin and his Dearg Ruadhri . Ciri was initially quite infatuated with him - he realized that and tried to use it to control her. They also came across a pack of unicorns which appeared to be at cold war with Aen Elle.

In Tir ná Lia Ciri finally met Auberon, who many times tries to conceive a child with her, however he could not - to him she was just a human, a being of no interest for an Aen Elle. Nevertheless, he was very proud and refused to admit it. Eredin suggested using a 'potion' which would improve Auberon's performance and allow him to conceive a child with Cirilla. He also told her the truth (probably to gain her trust) - that Avallac'h would never let her go. Knowing this, Ciri found help with the unicorns where she also met Little Horse/Ihuarraquax, by then fully grown. The unicorns explained that both Fox and Sparrowhawk had once possessed The Gate of the Worlds , a mystical power known only to those of the Elder Blood but they had lost it. Now they wanted these powers back and for that they needed Ciri. This could not be allowed, however, and the unicorns explained to Cirilla how she should escape.

That same day Ciri once again visited Auberon only to find that he had drunk the 'potion' given to him by Eredin. Unknown to Sparrowhawk it happened to be too strong and killed Auberon. That night Ciri attempted to escape Tir ná Lia and its barrier by using a boat and swimming with the river's current. She was stopped by Eredin who then revealed his true intentions, being the same as Avallac'h's. The two battled and Ciri proved victorious due to the elf's underestimation of her abilities - she wounded him and threw him into the river. Later on she mounted Kelpie and rode away from Tir ná Lia. She met Horsey, who was in fact named Ihuarraquax and offered his help (actually his being by Ciri's side was a part of her bargain with the other unicorns). They came across a huge pile of bones.

To her horror, Ciri realized that the skulls had human teeth making them a pile of human bones. Ihuarraquax explained that it had been a human world until the elves led by Fox and Sparrowhawk arrived and killed them all - this also would be the fate of other worlds, including Ciri's own, should Avallac'h and Eredin succeed in once again harnessing the power of time and space. Nevertheless, Ihuarraquax and Ciri realized that they were being chased.

Little Horse urged Ciri to jump to another world - the only way to escape. She, however, didn't know how. The unicorn became her guide and they jumped. This led to the manifestation of Ciri's strongest power, giving her the title of The Lady of the Worlds. That power allowed her to traverse space and time at will. Not being able to control it, however, Ciri had to journey through many different worlds to finally find her own . She traveled to Stygga Castle to give herself to Vilgefortz in exchange for Yennefer's freedom. However, when she arrives there, he refuses to release Yennefer and instead reveals his plan to impregnate her and use her placenta to gain access to the Elder Blood. She was saved by Geralt and his hansa and later the Impera Brigade under the command of Emperor Emhyr var Emreis himself; during the ensuing battle, Ciri encountered and battled Leo Bonhart, using her training from Kaer Morhen to outmaneuvre, then seriously injure the bounty hunter. Bonhart seemingly succeeded in convincing Ciri to spare his life, insisting she was too noble to kill a beaten, unarmed man but Ciri ultimately killed Bonhart in self-defence when he made a last attempt to attack her from behind. While Emhyr revealed to Geralt that he too had intended to impregnate Ciri, after sending Geralt and Yennefer away, he instead informed Ciri that he is her father and leaves Stygga Castle.

Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri then set out from Stygga Castle and travel; first, they visit Jealousy , where she visits the graves of the Rats. Yennefer then left for Vengerberg , and Geralt and Ciri traveled to Toussaint . As they arrived, they found Dandelion, about to be executed for angering Anna Henrietta by falling in love with another woman. He was pardoned, and Geralt advised that they leave before she could change her mind and decide to order his execution again. Ciri was then summoned to Vengerberg by Yennefer, and Geralt told her to meet him in Rivia in six days' time.

The Lodge [ ]

After traveling to Vengerberg, she and Yennefer were invited to the Lodge of Sorceresses in Montecalvo , where they revealed their plans to send Ciri to Kovir under a false name to have a child with Tankred Thyssen , the only son of Esterad Thyssen . She expressed that she wished to think it over during her travel to Rivia as she had already agreed to meet Geralt there. Philippa Eilhart proclaimed that her ability to leave Montecalvo and travel to Rivia is dependent on what the Lodge decides, so she put it to a vote; Sheala de Tancarville , Sabrina Glevissig , Keira Metz and Assire var Anahid voted against her leaving Montecalvo, while Triss, Margarita Laux-Antille , Francesca Findabair , Ida Emean aep Sivney , Fringilla Vigo , and eventually even Philippa Eilhart herself voted in favor of letting her leave. She then traveled with Yennefer and Triss to Rivia.

They arrive in Rivia in the midst of the Rivian Pogrom , and Ciri rushed into the crowd to try and find Geralt. After Yennefer and Triss released a hailstorm on the city and stopped the riot, they found Geralt impaled and bleeding out on the ground. After Ciri yelled at Yennefer because her magic was unable to save Geralt, the sorceress lost her consciousness. Ihuarraquax appeared on the lakeshore; his horn started emitting a light which was directed by Ciri on Geralt and Yennefer. The unicorn pointed to a boat; she put an unconscious Geralt and Yennefer in the boat and got in it with them. Geralt came to on Malus Island , and Yennefer informed him that Ciri had left.

After leaving Rivia with Geralt and Yennefer, she traveled to a different world where she met a knight by the name of Sir Galahad who invited her to King Arthur 's court at Camelot . She agreed, and the two rode off together, heading to Camelot through the lands of Y Dynan Bach Têg . [2]

Returning Home [ ]

Having hidden in another world for over half a year the Wild Hunt found Ciri, forcing her to flee. At some point Ciri discovered that Geralt had been captured by the Wild Hunt and managed to free him and send him to the forests outside of Kaer Morhen although he lost his memory in the process. Several months later Ciri, along with an elf named Avallac'h, returned from another world and ended up in Skellige where the Wild Hunt found and attacked them. Avallac'h was cursed during this attack before the two could teleport away, but were split up in the process.

Ciri appeared in Crookback Bog where she collapsed and was found by the Crones . The Crones intended to give her to the Wild Hunt however, as she possessed Elder blood , they couldn't decide whether to cut her up for her blood or not. Having overheard this, Ciri escaped and fled into the nearby forest, narrowly evading Imlerith . Traveling west into Velen , she encountered a young girl named Gretka who was lost and rescued her as well as a local man from a werewolf. She was then taken to Crow's Perch and taken in by Phillip Strenger (known as the Bloody Baron ) who alongside his men she befriended. During a race with Philip, the two are attacked by a basilisk and Ciri was forced to use her powers to save him. However, Ciri realized that Wild Hunt would sense her powers so she left Crow's Perch and headed to Novigrad .

Ciri tracked down Dandelion to enlist his help in repairing a phylactery to lift the curse on Avallac'h, though she excluded the identity of her friend. After evading a trap set by the Temple Guard , Dandelion suggested going to Cyprian "Whoreson Junior" Wiley , who agreed to fix the phylactery in exchange for stealing Sigi Reuven 's treasure. Wiley later turned on them, capturing and torturing their friend Dudu . Ciri managed to rescue Dudu but her activities got the attention of the Temple Guard, who chased her towards Temple Isle. Just as a crossbowman took a shot at her, Ciri teleported herself to safety.

Ciri teleported all the way to Skellige, landing on the shores of Hindarsfjall , where she fell unconscious, dropping into a lake. Avallac'h and a native Skelliger, Skjall , found the injured girl and took her to Skjall's home to recover. When she came to, Ciri accepted the invitation to heal at the local sauna. But soon as she prepared to depart, the Wild Hunt descended on the village, forcing Ciri to flee once more. She found her way to Avallac'h, who was waiting with a boat. But upon seeing Skjall being cut down by a Red Rider, she attempted to turn back to help him, but Avallac'h stunned her with a sleeping spell and took her on a ship.

Before Eredin's curse fully triggered, Avallac'h managed to bring Ciri to the Isle of Mists and put Ciri in a death-like slumber to hide her from the Wild Hunt. Avallac'h then sailed back to Skellige but the curse took hold, rendering it impossible for him to tell anyone who he was or where he hid Ciri. While Ciri slept, seven dwarves found her in the cabin and hid there as well, though they believed she was dead.

Later on, Ciri was finally found by Geralt and once she was awakened by the magical firefly the witcher was given by a cured Avallac'h, the two embraced and caught up on all that'd happened when Ciri tried to return home, including what'd she learned: the Aen Elle world was facing annihilation and so the King of the Wild Hunt was trying to catch Ciri to use her to open a powerful enough portal to allow an army through to conquer their world.

As they prepare to leave, they discover the dwarves hadn't bothered to wait and took Geralt's boat to flee the Isle, before spotting the Wild Hunt's flagship, the Naglfar, in the distance, forcing Ciri to teleport them directly to Kaer Morhen.

Upon arrival, Ciri happily reunited with Vesemir, Yennefer, and Triss. However, the time for celebration was cut short, as the Hunt would soon assault the aging keep. Despite wanting to fight in the upcoming battle, Ciri was ordered to remain inside the keep while everyone else defended her. However, Ciri defied this order when she saw Triss come under attack by Wild Hunt warriors and rushed to her aid. She later assisted Eskel against Caranthir, before the general heard a war horn signaling him to retreat.

Ciri scream at Kaer Morhen

Ciri's crippling scream at Kaer Morhen.

As the Wild Hunt breached Kaer Morhen's inner courtyard, they released a powerful blast of the White Frost, freezing everyone save for Ciri and Vesemir, who'd been behind a wall and thus weren't touched by the blast. Imlerith then attacked the pair and managed to pin Vesemir down, forcing Ciri to drop her weapon and go with Eredin willingly or they'd kill the old witcher. However, not wanting Ciri to give herself up, Vesemir made one last attack at Imlerith, stabbing him and causing Imlerith to snap Vesemir's neck, instantly killing the witcher. Distraught at this, Ciri's Elder Blood powers suddenly broke free in an uncontrollable, crippling scream, making everything gravitate towards her while the intensity of the magic killed anyone that got too close. Nonetheless, Eredin futilely tried to get closer to try and capture Ciri but was dragged back from her by Caranthir and disappeared through a portal. A weakened Avallac'h then appeared from his room in the keep and managed to intervene and stop Ciri's powers before they destroyed the entire keep and everyone else there.

Back in control of herself, Ciri attended Vesemir's funeral pyre with the rest but started to regret returning to Kaer Morhen and, despite Geralt's attempts to calm her, she snatched Vesemir's medallion off the pyre and ran off. She returned a shor time later to find Geralt, Avallac'h, Yennefer, and Triss discussing reassembling the Lodge of Sorceresses to fight the Wild Hunt and became incensed that decisions were being made without her and left once more.

Trying to use the small window they had to recover, Ciri continued to train with Avallac'h but was disheartened that she wasn't progressing well, especially with Vesemir's death fresh on her mind.

Ciri later stirs Geralt early in the morning, revealing she had discovered Imlerith was attending a sabbath on Bald Mountain in Velen, as would the Crones, though she hadn't told Avallac'h of her plans. Geralt can suggest visiting her biological father, Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, in Vizima first or go to Bald Mountain immediately.

If Geralt and Ciri go to meet Emhyr, the latter addresses her by all her titles as nobles and soldiers kneel before her. He then presents the second half of Geralt's payment as thanks for finding his daughter. Whether Geralt accepts or not affects Ciri. Ciri then engages in a private conversation with Emhyr but later stormed out, angry at his attempts to buy her.

A few weeks later, Geralt and Ciri arrive at Bald Mountain and are forced to contend with the local celebration, which ends in them being sent to a sylvan named Fugas for execution. After slaying the monster, Ciri plays a game of rock, paper, scissors, to decide who will face the Crones and who would slay Imlerith. Ciri lost the game and thus went to confront the Crones. She interrupts them while they were stirring a cauldron full of human remains, prompting them to transform from beautiful women into their true, hideous forms. Ciri managed to slay Brewess and Whispess but Weavess managed to escape with Vesemir's medallion.

Their mission a success, the pair head for Novigrad, where Ciri had a multitude of personal matters to take care of. With Geralt, she revisits all the people she had encountered in the city. She was also present when Geralt and Avallac'h bring Ge'els from the world of the Aen Elle to show him proof that Eredin murdered the previous Aen Elle king, Auberon Muircetach, so he'd stop supporting the regicide. Ge'els attempt to sow animosity between Ciri and Avallac'h, but it fails. Corinne Tilly , a oneiromancer, shows everyone through dreams of Eredin's regicide.

After Philippa Eilhart and Margarita Laux-Antille are gathered, they ask to meet with Ciri. If Geralt accompanies Ciri to the meeting, it undermines her confidence. The sorceresses extended an invitation for Ciri to join the Lodge as an equal partner.

The party then travels to Skellige to find an elven artifact called the Sunstone to lure Eredin into a trap. Ciri then expresses her desire to investigate Avallac'h secret laboratory in the isles, suspecting the elf to be hiding something from her. She goes ahead with Yennefer to await Geralt's arrival. After penetrating the laboratory, they find a genealogical chart of Elder Blood descendants; Avallac'h was studying all paths of Lara Dorren, even those thought extinct. They soon encounter a she-elf, claiming to be Avallac'h's lover, who proceeds to insult Ciri, calling her a degenerate half-breed and that Avallac'h despises that he needs her. Her words anger Ciri so much that she wants to tear up the lab. Geralt can support her and aid in the ransacking, cheering her up, or calm her down and fasten Lara Dorren's necklace around her neck, depressing her.

Once outside, Ciri asks to go to Hindarsfjall to see Skjall, only to be told of his death. If Geralt refuses, it depresses her. If he agrees to accompany her, they either meet up later or teleport there. Upon arrival, Ciri learns that Skjall was never buried, instead thrown on a corpse heap. After finding his corpse and giving it a proper burial, they are accosted by a band of villagers, who take issue with their defiance against their elders' writ, as Skjall was dishonored and his name stricken. Ciri threatens retaliation if Skjall's grave is disturbed and reveals Skjall's role in saving her from the Hunt, restoring his honor.

The party then sail to Undvik to spring the trap, with the Nilfgaardian fleet preventing the Naglfar from fleeing by sea and the sorceresses blocking their attempts to teleport. As the battle started, though advised to remain on shore, Ciri realized that Geralt and his Nilfgaardian detachment were frozen and decided to go out and assist. Avallac'h advised her to find Caranthir and break the jewel on his staff to lift the spell. After fighting through Hunt warriors and hounds did Ciri engage Caranthir, eventually destroying his staff, though the effort seemingly knocked her unconscious. Caranthir then attempted to grab Ciri, only for her to teleport away.

After Geralt mortally wounded Eredin, the elven king stated that Avallac'h had tricked them both, pitting them against each other while he made off with Ciri. When Geralt confronts Avallac'h as another Conjunction of the Spheres begins, but Avallac'h drops his sword proving that he did not betray them but was just following Ciri's wish to come here. Geralt then confronts Ciri who tells him that she has to go inside the portal to stop the White Frost. Depending on Geralt's interactions with her, Ciri may either survive or die stopping the White Frost.

If Ciri survives and didn't meet with Emhyr or met with Emhyr but Nilfgaard lost the war, Geralt will tell the Emperor that she died saving the world, before later meeting with Ciri to give her her witcher's blade. If Ciri survives and had met with Emhyr and Nilfgaard won the war, when Geralt meets with her in White Orchard , she reveals that she has decided to take her place as Empress of Nilfgaard.

Family tree [ ]

For an expanded version, see Template:Ciri Family Tree Expanded .

  • According to Blood of Elves , her name is derived from the Elder Speech word Zireael , meaning Swallow.
  • Sometime by the late 14th century, no surviving portraits of her exist anymore. Ironically, the one that people believe is of her in Cintra is actually that of her double .
  • In the Time of Contempt novel a girl officially claimed to be Ciri by the Nilfgaardian Empire is declared to hold the last title; however Emhyr var Emreis knows she's not the real heir to the Cintran throne but plays along until they can find the real Ciri.
  • In The Witcher , the innkeeper at the Country Inn in the village of Murky Waters can tell Geralt the tale of "Cirilla".
  • In The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings , she's mentioned a couple of times (both indirectly and directly by name).
  • In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , she appears on one of the cards in neutral deck .
  • She appears in The Hexer TV series in 4 episodes (" Świątynia Melitele ", " Mniejsze zło ", " Falwick ", and " Ciri "). Unlike in the books, she first met Geralt at the Temple of Melitele in Ellander. She is also not depicted during her teenage years in the series.

Ciri's age [ ]

  • In Blood of Elves , Ciri states she's 13 in spring of 1266 (which is backed by Time of Contempt when she says she's 14 in 1267 ).
  • In The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake , some characters guess she's 15 to 16 years old, which would put her as born in 1251 or 1252 instead. However, Ciri neither confirms nor corrects these statements.
  • Near the end of The Lady of the Lake , the author once more contradicts this information when, in March 1268 , Emhyr remarks it's been 16 years since he and Geralt last saw each other, meaning 1252 . If Nenneke was right in guessing Ciri was born around Belleteyn , this would mean Ciri can't be any older than 14 years and 10 months when the assault on Stygga castle happened. It's unclear though if Emhyr just did a basic rounding with years (1268-1252=16) or if he rounded down and meant 17 years instead.
  • In the Dynastic descriptions , she's described as being 12 when she and Hjalmar got "engaged". However, this would have been impossible due to fact that the Slaughter of Cintra took place in 1263 and she went to Kaer Morhen in 1264 . Even if she was born in 1252 , this would have still been impossible as she'd only have been 11 at most when the Slaughter of Cintra took place, still putting her below 12 years old.

Ciri's Powers In The Witcher Season 2 Explained

Ciri staring ahead

Spoilers ahead for "The Witcher" Season 2.

Fans of "The Witcher" have been wondering about Princess Cirella's ( Freya Allan ) powerful abilities ever since the show's debut season first premiered. Raised by her protective grandmother, Queen Calanthe (Jodhi May), Ciri quickly became a target of the forces of Nilfgaard. The enemy country obviously desired her because she was the seat of Cintra, but also because of the mysterious powers she exhibits. While magic is common in the world of "The Witcher," it's clear that Ciri has powers no one else possesses. As a result, Ciri is chased around The Continent throughout "The Witcher" Season 1, unsure the whole time of what it is that makes her so special.

Ciri is different in "The Witcher" Season 2 . The character is visibly older than she was the last time viewers saw her, thanks to the gap that took place between the filming of "The Witcher" Seasons 1 and 2 (via CinemaBlend ). Although she possesses some newfound grit and a desire to learn how to fight, there's still a lot of mystery surrounding the character, as Ciri herself does not even know what she is capable of.

Thankfully, some much-needed details about her powers are finally revealed in "The Witcher" Season 2 .

What we first learn about Ciri's powers

Ciri has demonstrated some amazing abilities in "The Witcher," but it's difficult to pin down the exact nature of them in the show's first season. Usually, the moments when Ciri uses her powers are random and are caused by extreme stress. This first happens on Calanthe's deathbed when Ciri expresses her sadness by letting out a deafening scream that rattles the entire room. Calanthe understands that Ciri is wielding Chaos, but does not have the knowledge or time to explain that to her.

From there, Ciri's powers only continue to increase. While on the run from the Nilfgaardian knight, Cahir (Eamon Farren), Ciri escapes using her power to take down a Monolith. The Monolith creates a great chasm, which allows Ciri to escape, but her abilities also seem to grow to a point where she is no longer able to contain them. Her Chaos is destructive and untethered, and during some of her final moments in "The Witcher" Season 1, Ciri unleashes a blast of energy that is so powerful it obliterates everything around her.

It's the moment in the show when Ciri begins to understand that her power comes from deep within her, a realization that leaves her understandably shaken and afraid.

Ciri got her powers from her mother

Ciri's powers make her a force to be reckoned with, and they appear to be somewhat unique in the world of "The Witcher." However, while many people do not seem to possess her gifts, there is one other person we know who did.

During her wedding feast and the Law of Surprise , Ciri's mother, Pavetta (Gaia Mondadori), displayed the same destructive ability as Ciri. In fact, when Calanthe attempted to separate Pavetta from her intended husband, Duny (Bart Edwards), she let out a scream that was quite similar to the one Ciri made when Calanthe was on her deathbed. Not only did Pavetta's scream shake the room and blast people back, but Pavetta also surrounded herself and Duny in a circle of protection. Like Ciri, Pavetta seemed unaware of the implications of her powers, or where they come from.

It's revealed in "The Witcher" Season 2, however, that Calanthe knew more than she let people think.

Calanthe is descended from Elves

Based on the events of "The Witcher" Season 2, it seems safe to say that Ciri's family had been keeping their powers under wraps due to concerns about their lineage. Every time Ciri or Pavetta demonstrate their gifts, Queen Calanthe is noticeably unhappy. The more light is shed on the issue in "The Witcher" Season 2, however, the clearer it becomes that the most logical explanation for why Calanthe is so disturbed by Ciri and Pavetta's abilities is because she fears that they could reveal a shocking truth about her family history.

Queen Calanthe, it turns out, is descended from Elves. This is an issue in the world of "The Witcher" because Elves are not accepted as equals and were nearly eradicated at one point. In fact, Calanthe is one of the people who despised Elves and supported the genocide attempt against them. As a result, the royal house of Cintra's connection to the Elves becomes, unsurprisingly, very relevant in "The Witcher" Season 2.

Ciri possesses Elder blood

Due to the persecution of Elves and perhaps even her own self-loathing, Calanthe kept her Elven heritage a secret, including the fact that her family line is descended from a powerful line of Elf mages and contains Elder blood. As Triss (Anna Shaffer) reminds Vesemir (Kim Bodnia) in "The Witcher" Season 2, it's long been assumed that Elder blood was eradicated from existence, a detail that is significant to Vesemir because Elder blood is a key component in the mutagens required to create more Witchers.

Vesemir, notably, longs to make more of his kind. However, Triss becomes concerned that Ciri's power is dangerous. Elder blood has, after all, not appeared in a long time and Ciri's powers have become unpredictable. Unfortunately, that suggests that dark things may lie in store for Ciri, who confesses to Geralt (Henry Cavill) at one point that she feels a "pull" toward the new monsters they have encountered.

Ithlinne's prophecy spells doom

Ciri has, among other abilities, the power to learn about certain events before they happen. These abilities do not present themselves as frequently as her other powers, but they are just as important. Of course, the most significant display of Ciri's ability to see the future is her recitation of Ithlinne's prophecy. First heard in "The Witcher" Season 1, Ciri recited a prophecy that was given by the Elven prophet, Ithlinne, which predicts:

"The world will perish amidst ice and be reborn with the new sun. Reborn of the Elder Blood, of Hen Ichaer, of a planted seed. A seed that will not sprout but burst into flames."

The prophecy comes back into play again in "The Witcher" Season 2 when Ciri and Triss embark on a vision quest of sorts. Searching for some kind of meaning or explanation for Ciri's abilities, the two enter her subconscious only for Triss to grow concerned when everything becomes, well, interactive. To make matters even worse, in the final vision they see, Ithlinne predicts that the end of the world will come when the Elves rise again.

Triss subsequently determines that Ciri is dangerous and may bring about the end of the world, and Geralt decides that the best course of action is to take her to the Temple of Melitele where she can learn to control her Chaos. The priestess Nenneke acknowledges the depth of Ciri's power and ominously warns that it may be too much for Geralt to handle.

Indeed, while Ciri is shown learning how to cast basic spells like portals, "The Witcher" Season 2 also makes it undeniably clear that she is meant for greater things. Fans of "The Witcher" will, unfortunately, have to wait to see exactly where Ciri's journey takes her next, but at least they can take some consolation in the fact that they now know more about her powers than they ever have before.

The Witcher: Blood Origin changes Ciri’s story and sets up Witcher season 3 (maybe)

Ciri’s prophecy isn’t like the books

Ciri stares intensely in The Witcher season two

The Witcher: Blood Origin is mostly about the beginnings of the Witcher universe as we know it, but that doesn’t keep it from connecting with the series’ present in some important ways. While the most obvious one may be Jaskier (Joey Batey) showing up in the miniseries’ opening, Blood Origin also has a lot to say about the family and future of the princess of Cintra.

Ciri’s (Freya Allan) role in Blood Origin may not be immediately clear, but there are a few key details, including a major change from the books, which seem like they’ll play a very important role in the main show’s upcoming third season .

[ Ed. note : This story contains spoilers for The Witcher seasons 1 and 2 and The Witcher: Blood Origin .]

Blood Origin ends with a scene of Éile (Sophia Brown) receiving a prophecy from Ithlinne (Ella Schrey-Yeats), the young elf at the tavern who has visions. Ithlinne is a familiar character from the books, but one who has gotten a significant shift in the show’s version of the Witcher-verse. And, fittingly, her most famous and Ciri-centric prophecy also got an update. The new version reads as such:

The time of the spheres is upon us. Aen Seidhe lost across the skies. Cast adrift in time. Ever searching for love, lost and left behind. The Lark’s seed shall carry forth the first note of a song that ends all times. And one of her blood shall sing the last.

With this new prophecy, and the fact that it was given to Éile (who we now know to be a years-removed relative of Ciri), the show is expanding the timeline a bit to make Ciri’s eventual arrival and destiny far more complicated and long-lasting than it has seemed to be in the world of the books and games.

This direct connection also makes Ciri a descendant of the first Witcher . That change seems poised to take away from her (likely) eventual transformation into a Witcher herself, making it a piece of hereditary destiny passed down from a very great grandfather rather than a feat achieved by someone special, even if she is born with Elder Blood. Rather than expanding the world by knowing all the people and places important to its biggest moments, Blood Origin reduces the entire world to a pinhole, with just a few important characters apparently accounting for every meaningful event in history.

To make this reducing of the world extra clear, the show’s post-credits scene gives us a brief glimpse of Ciri, apparently around the time of the main Witcher series. As she plays with kids, while disguised, Avallac’h (Samuel Blenkin) watches her from the shadows. With this extremely vague tease, it seems like the series is suggesting Avallac’h will be part of the main show’s third season, while also implying that he did in fact find both a way to travel through time, and a way to discern that Ciri is the child spoken of in the prophecy.

As for the rest of the Witcher story, this also seems to cheapen the story of Lara Dorren a bit, by making her just one in a long chain of elves who led to Ciri — though she’d still be notable for marrying and having a child with a human.

In all, it’s not really clear what this take on Ciri’s prophecy actually means, or how it changes the world (except reducing it to the smallest possible pieces). But whatever implications it has for the larger world, we’re sure to find out when The Witcher season 3 arrives, and likely puts Ciri center stage.

Netflix's The Witcher: What are Ciri’s powers, and what is her destiny?

After almost three full seasons of the Witcher, here's what we know about Ciri's powers, their source, and her destiny

Over the course of the last three seasons of Netflix's hit show The Witcher (based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski ), we’ve seen a fair amount of Ciri using special powers, and heard an awful lot more about what she’s capable of (including either the destruction or salvation of the world, depending on who you’re talking to).

But halfway through the third season, there’s still a lot of pieces to put together about who Ciri is, what she can do, and what her destiny is.

Here’s what we can say so far.

What are Ciri’s powers in the Witcher?

ciri and travel

Like her mother Pavetta and many other women of her ancestral line, Ciri has the ability to access an incredible amount of power, and in a growing variety of ways. When we first meet her in the pilot, her scream has the capacity to literally throw people a great distance, as she does with the Nilfgaardian knight Cahir when he attempts to abduct her.

When frightened Ciri can also create a blast similar but stronger to that which her mother set upon the court of Cintra, as she does in episode 107 when friends from Cintra attempt to seize her so as to sell her to Nilfgaard, killing everything in a large radius.

ciri and travel

Ciri also seems to have a sixth sense that draws her at times, whether into the Brokilon forest of the dryads, where Shan-Kayan, the central tree of the forest, speaks to her in a vision; or in season two, when she knows instinctively which way to go in order to find the monsters outside the Witchers’ keep Kaer Morhen.

But as the seasons have gone on she’s slowly learned that her most fundamental power is the ability to somehow create passages between the spheres (what we would call dimensions or worlds). In the pilot when she throws Cahir off, she also accidentally levels a monolith—massive black stone formations throughout the planet that are places of great power, through which some are able to travel between spheres. With its destruction she also creates a massive crack in the ground that we learn in season two is somehow occasionally a passage to another such sphere.

ciri and travel

At the end of the second season Ciri similarly creates a portal through which she, Geralt and Yennefer travel to a desert-like world in which they encounter a group of seven spectral riders known as the Wild Hunt who want her to join them. But before they can get to her she transports the three of them back to their own world.

Once opened, Ciri’s portals seem to remain open. In the second season monsters occasionally emerge from the crack she created in season one and search her out, seemingly to kill her. And in 303, the Wild Hunt chases her again, but this time in her world. After Geralt dispels them with his magic, the two discover a piece of one of the knights’ armor on the ground. This wasn’t an illusion or vision, Geralt posits; when Ciri created a portal to their universe she gave them the means to travel back to hers.

Where did Ciri get her powers?

ciri and travel

The question of where Ciri’s powers come from has a number of potential answers.

First, there is the biological or genetic explanation. In episode 204 Vesemir, mentor to and most experienced of all the Witchers, discovers brilliant purple flowers growing along the path of the Witchers’ training course. Known as Feainnewedd, these flowers only appear where the ground has been touched by Elder blood, an extraordinarily rare Elven blood that grants its holders access to incredible magical power.

Given its presence on the training course where Ciri has been practicing, Vesemir deduces that Ciri in fact has Elder blood. This blood is a key element in the potions used to create Witchers; with Ciri’s permission and the help of the sorceress Triss Merigold, Vesemir successfully recreates that potion, confirming that indeed Ciri has Elder blood.

There’s also a genealogical answer to why Ciri would have such power. In episode 205, Ciri agrees to undertake the Dol Durza (aka the Valley of the Soul), a spell by which she and Triss are able to journey back through the layers of not only Ciri’s consciousness but her ancestry for answers about her identity. At the end of that journey they find themselves in a ruined wasteland, where an Elven woman in a yellow dress sings to her baby while she bleeds to death.

ciri and travel

This woman, they discover, is Lara Dorren, an ancient Elven sorceress who fell in love with the human mage Cregannan after the Conjunction of the Spheres brought their people together. Their daughter, she says, “could have united our races.” But the humans condemned their union, and staged an attack upon them while Lara was pregnant, killing Cregannan. Lara would die soon after, leaving her daughter an orphan “who will destroy them.”

As Lara lays there, all around her bloom blossoms of Feainnewedd from the drops of her blood that have fallen on the ground. She has Elder blood, and she says that a descendant of hers will be the instrument of her revenge: “The world will die amidst frost and be reborn with the new sun. It will be reborn of Elder Blood, of Hen Ichaer, of the seed that has been sown. A seed which will not sprout but burst into flame.”

Lara addresses Ciri as “Child of Elder blood,” making explicit the connection between the two of them. So a second answer as to the origin of Ciri’s powers would be the fact that she is a direct descendant of Lara Dorren.

There’s a third answer as well. A major part of the mythology of the books is that there are moments of destiny when unusual and powerful forces coincide to create massive long-term impacts.

The Law of Surprise is one such vehicle for destiny. Children who are taken into the life of another by way of the Law of Surprise are often unusually powerful, we are told, because the forces of destiny which that promise creates themselves create a sort of nexus of power. In the books reference is made to children who become witchers being taken in as a result of the Law of Surprise. The lives of Pavetta and Ciri, too, exist entirely under that promise.

What are the prophesies surrounding Ciri in the Witcher? What is Ciri’s destiny?

ciri and travel

Throughout the Witcher series, Ciri hears prophesies about her destiny. Most of them suggest she is an apocalyptic figure who is going to destroy the world.

Many of these prophesies occur within the context of visions that Ciri has. So in episode 204, when Ciri touches dust coating two different monsters that had attacked her, she suddenly finds herself on a desert plain on a planet with three suns, standing before a monolith. And she watches herself issue this prophesy: “Daughter of Chaos belongs to us. Turn your backs. Join the procession. There is only death here."

In season one, too, when the Cintrans are moving to grab her, she suddenly issues a prophesy in a voice that is not her own. While it doesn’t speak specifically of her, it definitely describes a coming time of devastation: “Verily I say unto you,” the vision of her says, “the era of the sword and axe is nigh, the era of the wolf's blizzard. The Time of the White Chill and the White Light is nigh, the Time of Madness and the Time of Contempt.”

ciri and travel

On the three occasions when Ciri meets the Wild Hunt, they, too, suggest that she is a force of doom for the universe. In the first she sees them coming toward from the skies after Lara Dorren has prophesied about a seed of Elder blood who will burst into flame. In episode 208, when Ciri transports Geralt and Yennefer to another sphere, the leader of the Wild Hunt which races toward them says to her, “Child of the elder blood, starry eyed daughter of chaos, join our hunt,” says their leader in episode 208. “Your place is among us. You are ours.” And in episode 303, he makes his belief as to her destiny even clearer, saying “Yes, we are corpses, but you are death itself. Join us.”

In episode 206 the mage Istredd learns from the detectives Codringher and Fenn that ancient Elven scrolls had been mistranslated as having talked about a “weapon” built to destroy the humans. In fact the proper translation was not weapon but “warrior.” The detectives also enumerated Lara Dorren’s curse upon humanity, which suggests Ciri might be their doom: “My curse will hound your descendants until the 10th generation, until the columns of time and space tremble and open for my people, then my vengeance will be born again.”

ciri and travel

Even Triss, who spends a good portion of season two trying to help Ciri, in the end concludes that she is a force of ultimate destruction. In episode 205, after the two of them travel through her consciousness as a result of the Valley of the Soul spell, Triss concludes that Ciri is the weapon of which Lara Dorren speaks. “You are the seed that bursts into flame,” she tells Ciri. “You will destroy us all.”

Having said that, not everyone feels the same way about Ciri. Having learned from Istredd in episode 208 that Ciri has Elder blood, the Elven leader Francesa Findalbair comes to believe that Ciri is the intended vehicle of their salvation that Lara Dorren promised, and spends the first part of season three trying to capture Ciri so as to protect her.

Meanwhile, having learnt of what Triss discovered, the sorcerer Vilgefortz tells his love Tissaia in episode 207, “If what she says is true, this child has the potential to end all war forever.” Ciri’s father the Nilfgaardian emperor Emhyr van Emreis likewise believes that Ciri is the key to his plan to take over and unite the continent; in episode 106 the Nilfgaardian sorceress Fringilla Vigo says much the same.

ciri and travel

But what exactly gives them reason to believe this to be true is unclear. Did the prophesy about Ciri that Emhyr-as-Duny learned from Pavetta long ago have some element that we haven’t heard yet?

Or does he have some other take on Ciri’s potential? In the later episodes of season three, volume one we learn that someone at Aretuza, the academy for young mages and witches, has taken the Book of the Monolith, which supposedly would give the right user the capacity to move through time and space (and perhaps send the Elves to another sphere). Is it possible that Emhyr intends to have Ciri, who already has sphere-related powers, use the book to win the war once and for all?

ciri and travel

While the answers to these questions remain a mystery for now, there is another possibility worth considering. In episode 105, when Ciri is bound to depart Brokilon, Queen Eithné warns her to “Be vigilant. Always ask the right questions. Your destiny is in your own hands and no one else’s.”

Similarly, the Shan-Kayan tree which spoke to Ciri in episode 104, rather than rattling off some pre-ordained destiny for her, simply asked “What are you, child?” Ciri hears that same question again in episode 205 just before she meets Lara Dorren.

Geralt has long said that destiny can go “f*** itself.” Usually that’s been followed by him being confronted by the fact that he does indeed seem to have a destiny. But maybe there’s still wisdom in his belief. In the end, Ciri’s path may have far less to do with blood, ancestry or prophesy than it does with what she decides for herself she is going to be.

‘The Witcher’ ended its second season with a big twist — and a subtle clue that it was coming

ciri and travel

Note: This article contains spoilers for the second season of Netflix’s “The Witcher.”

“The Witcher,” Netflix’s fan-favorite fantasy show starring Henry Cavill as a brooding monster hunter, returned for its second season Friday, and, once again, everyone is talking about Geralt of Rivia.

The show’s sophomore bow takes place on the heels of the devastating Battle of Sodden Hill, where the antagonistic Nilfgaardian empire was defeated amid its quest to take over the Continent. Season 2 revolves around Geralt’s efforts to protect his “child surprise,” Ciri (Freya Allan) from a growing cast of enemies including Nilfgaard’s lingering threats, a vengeful demon and monsters mysteriously emerging from monoliths.

Ciri was bound to Geralt by the “ law of surprise ” promise her father Duny (Bart Edwards) made to the witcher for saving his life. The repayment, according to tradition, required Duny to repay Geralt with “that which you already have but do not know.” The agreement took place at a banquet Queen Calanthe (Jodhi May) held for her daughter Pavetta (Gaia Mondadori) .

It was at that banquet, first shown in flashback last season, that we saw another law of surprise vow get fulfilled as Pavetta and Duny — who had saved Pavetta’s late father King Roegner years earlier — got married with Queen Calanthe’s blessing. It was a reluctant blessing, granted only after Pavetta witnessed her mother attempt to kill Duny and unleashed a magical meltdown that knocked the banquet’s guests off their feet. The impromptu wedding that happened minutes later broke a years-old curse that had given Duny the face of a hedgehog during daylight hours.

“I cannot start a new life in the shadow of a life debt,” a fresh-faced Duny tells Geralt, who halfheartedly invokes the law of surprise tradition in response. Geralt doesn’t realize — until a newly pregnant Pavetta throws up on the floor of the banquet hall — that he will be linked by destiny to the couple’s yet-to-be born child. Though Ciri’s parents are long dead by the time Geralt and she meet for the first time, the eight-episode second season explores the implications of that promise, building to a nail-biting finale that forces Geralt to defend Ciri — also known as Princess Cirilla of (the fallen kingdom of) Cintra — at all costs.

Will you toss a coin to 'The Witcher'?

Early in the season, Geralt takes Ciri to the one place he believes she will be safe: Kaer Morhen, the witcher compound where he was trained to kill monsters. This is where she meets Geralt’s surrogate father, Vesemir (Kim Bodnia), the talented mage Triss Merigold (Anna Shaffer) and Geralt’s brothers by proxy, all of whom have a role in training Ciri to defend herself against the various forces and individuals out to get her.

Kaer Morhen is also the setting of a stunning and important revelation about Ciri: She has Elder blood . Vesemir explains that, according to legend, Elder blood is a crucial ingredient in the first Witcher mutagens and could hold the key to creating more of his and Geralt’s kind.

We get additional details about what Ciri’s heritage means for her powers when Istredd (Royce Pierreson) meets with a pair of investigators known as Codringher (Simon Callow) and Fenn (Liz Carr), two of several intriguing characters introduced this season. Elder blood, Fenn interprets from an old scroll, was a mutant gene the elves created in an effort to defend their race from humans. “The elves didn’t build a weapon,” Fenn tells Istredd, correcting a mistranslation in the text. “They built a warrior.”

Codringher chimes in with the warrior’s legendary name: Lara Dorren. It’s familiar, thanks to a story Geralt’s old friend Nivellen (Kristofer Hivju) tells Ciri in the season’s first episode, about an elven warrior and a human mage who fell in love despite their differences and married. The ill-fated couple was killed but their baby survived. Ciri later sees part of the tragedy play out in a subconscious state that allows Triss to uncover “genetic memories that tell the story” of who Ciri is, along with the source of her powers.

Among the scenes that unfold while Triss navigates Ciri’s subconscious is a clandestine meeting that hints at Ciri’s controversial lineage. “They’d kill her if they knew,” Duny says. “It’s a prophecy,” Pavetta counters. “Maybe it’s not true.”

But “it doesn’t matter if it’s true,” Duny concludes. “It only matters if the people believe it. And they will.”

The couple plans to escape by boat to protect their child and Ciri realizes the memory precedes her parents’ death at sea. But the most terrifying subset of her subconscious brings a dying Lara Dorren into full focus. Triss and Ciri watch as Lara (Niamh McCormack) speaks sweetly to her half-human infant about “the story of the elven warrior made to kill the human invader … she fell in love with.” But when a concerned Triss attempts to heal Lara’s fatal wounds, Lara’s voice becomes distorted and demonic. “You could have united our races,” Lara says, squeezing an outstretched hand around Triss’s neck while looking down at the baby. “And now my sweet daughter, you will destroy them.”

The trip leaves Triss shaken and horrified. “A seed that bursts into flame. It’s you,” she tells Ciri, echoing a dark prophecy that foretells the end of the world . “You will destroy us all.” And with that, Lara Dorren goes from legend to a key part of Ciri’s family history — and an urgent warning about her future.

The finale sets up a battle for that future and, fittingly, transports us back to Pavetta’s destiny-altering banquet. This time, it’s an illusion that Ciri sees while under the spell of the Deathless Mother, a centuries-old demon that feeds on pain, and who was relegated to isolation by witchers that came before Geralt. As the Deathless Mother, also known as Voleth Meir, possesses Ciri, the demon zeroes in on Ciri’s deepest pain, reuniting the Cintran princess with her dead loved ones — her parents, her grandmother and her family’s trusted adviser, Mousesack (Adam Levy) — in a false representation of the banquet Ciri could not possibly have attended because it preceded her birth.

Earlier in the season, we observe the Deathless Mother’s malicious modus operandi through three prominent mages who seek her help in getting what they yearn for most. Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), the Battle of Sodden Hill’s true heroine, longs for her magic to return after it was zapped in the conflict. Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) seeks Nilfgaardian power and the admiration of Nilfgaard’s emperor, Emhyr, while the elven mage Francesca (Mecia Simson) desperately hopes to save her people by bringing forth a new life.

Yennefer’s wish comes with a steep price: She has to betray her love, Geralt, by bringing Ciri to the Deathless Mother. While Yenn ultimately backtracks on delivering Ciri, it’s not enough to stop the demon from possessing the girl. After taking control of Ciri, Voleth Meir unleashes her wrath against several unsuspecting witchers, who falsely believe their assailant to be Ciri, the girl they have mentored and loved. The surviving witchers, along with Geralt, Yennefer and Vesemir assemble to stop the demon. Geralt realizes that the Voleth Meir is using Ciri as a means to an end: The Deathless Mother wants to go home.

Yennefer, plagued by guilt over her near-betrayal of Geralt, offers herself as a vessel for the demon, mostly freeing Ciri from her false sense of safety. But it’s the witcher’s reassuring voice that fully pulls Ciri out of it. “We belong together. You. Us,” Geralt tells his surrogate daughter. “It’s not perfect, but it is real. It’s yours. We are your family. And we need you.”

“I have to go home,” Ciri says, setting the stage for an epic alliance with her Witcher “dad” Geralt and her mage “mom” Yennefer, whose powers are finally restored — and perhaps giving those two crazy kids (Yenn and Geralt, that is) a chance at love after all. The scene ends with a blink-and-you-missed-it clue to the reveal that lies ahead. Everyone in Ciri’s banquet illusion — individuals we know to be dead in the present — dissolves to dust. Well, almost everyone.

After Ciri harnesses her power to send the Deathless Mother back from whence she came, Emhyr, the mysterious, oft-discussed emperor of Nilfgaard — known by his most ardent followers as the White Flame — is revealed to be the only banquet guest who didn’t disappear. His face is the last we see as Season 2 of “The Witcher” comes to an end. Emhyr confesses to ordering the murder of Francesca’s baby, the result of the elven mage’s ill-fated meeting with the Deathless Mother. “I had to. It was the best path to helping me find my daughter,” he says, as “The Witcher” reveals Emhyr to be none other than Duny, Ciri’s presumed-dead father.

In the season’s biggest twist, Duny is alive — and among the power-hungry entities desperately trying to recruit Ciri for their own motivations. What we don’t know is why. The good news is “The Witcher’s” third season, like the era of the sword and ax , is nigh.

Appearance [ ]

Ciri's most distinguishing features are her ashen hair and the scar on her cheek. She has emerald-green eyes. As a child, she wore her hair short and had a white-and-brown outfit with light brown boots and dark green leggings. As a young adult, her appearance and attire is very different; she now wears her hair past her shoulders, and has a white shirt with black leggings, black trousers and dark brown trousers. She has grown quite tall, being almost as tall as Yennefer.

Personality [ ]

Background [ ].

After the Witcher Geralt of Rivia lifted a curse from Duny, the Urcheon of Erlenwald, he demanded from Duny his wife Pavetta's firstborn child, a child he had but didn't know he had, due to the Law of Surprise. Six years to the day after the child's birth, Geralt went back to Cintra for her, but did not take her with him to Kaer Morhen at that time. In fact, he didn't even lay eyes on her and only spoke with Calanthe. The Queen divulged no information to him, not even the child's gender. This child was named Cirilla.

While she was still an infant, Ciri's parents were both lost in a storm at sea. They were presumed dead. She spent her youth in Cintra and the Skellige Islands, cared for by her grandmother. Ciri first met Geralt when she was lost in the forest of Brokilon. She was nearly taken by the dryads, who wished to make her one of their own. The Queen of the dryads, Eithné, unexpectedly let the girl choose her own future. Ciri chose Geralt, and wished to stay with him after they left Brokilon. However, the Witcher would not take her with him. Instead, he left her with the druid Mousesack who was working for Calanthe. Then came the slaughter of Cintra.

During the Nilfgaardian invasion of Cintra, Ciri was kidnapped by a Nilfgaardian knight named Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach, though his identity was not known at the time. She managed to escape and wandered aimlessly for some time through Sodden until she was ultimately adopted by a merchant's family.

Coincidentally, Geralt had been helped by that same merchant and transported to his home. Thus, Ciri and Geralt were once again united. This time the Witcher took her with him to Kaer Morhen, where, under the supervision of Triss Merigold she underwent partial Witcher training, sans mutations, with Geralt, Vesemir, Lambert, Eskel and Coën. It was there that it was confirmed that Ciri was a source.

Geralt and Triss later took her to the Temple of Melitele in Ellander where she received instruction from Nenneke, and then from Yennefer, who began Ciri's magical training in earnest. As news of war began to spread, Ciri and Yennefer left Ellander for Gors Velen and ultimately Thanedd Island and Aretuza where the sorceress intended to enroll the girl as well as attend a conference of mages.

Things did not work out as planned though, not by a long shot. There was a coup during the conference and several individuals including Vilgefortz and Cahir tried to capture Ciri once again, and once again failed with the girl escaping through an unstable magical portal in Tor Lara. Because of the portal's nature, Ciri was simply ejected in mid-air over the Korath desert.

Unaware of where she was and without obvious recourse, the girl decided to make her way out of the wasteland by heading west. Unfortunately she wandered around in circles for some time before deciding to use the stars as a guide. She nearly died of exhaustion, dehydration and starvation. Luckily to her she met a unicorn whom she nicknamed Horsey that helped her out of the Frying Pan (a folk name for the deadly desert).

Ciri, who was still undergoing an emotional tribulation, then joined the Rats, a group of ne'er-do-wells she met when they were rescuing one of their members, under the name Falka. Bounty hunter Leo Bonhart was hired by Stefan Skellen to kill Ciri and by baron Casadei to capture her alive. Bonhart killed the Rats and cut off their heads after their deaths. He neither killed Ciri, nor brought her to baron Casadei, therefore not fullfilling his contracts. Bonhart imprisoned her for some time, beating her, mistreating and forcing her to kill in the arena at Claremont, which belonged to his cousin Houvenaghel.

Ciri managed to escape with the help of Neratin Ceka when Bonhart had taken her to the village of Unicorn on the eve of the equinox. He had gone to meet with Skellen and Rience and possibly negotiate some terms to release Ciri. Bonhart then killed Neratin Ceka, and Skellen seriously wounded Ciri, disfiguring her with an orion as she fled the village on her mare, Kelpie.

Later, she was found, near death by Vysogota of Corvo, who hid and healed at his hermitage in the Pereplut swamp. She stayed with Vysogotha until shortly after Saovine when she set off to find the Swallow's tower.

Together with Skellen and Rience, Bonhart tried to hunt her down on the order of Vilgefortz. Eventually, she escaped to Tor Zireael.

Being a twin tower to Tor Lara, Tor Zireael had a portal which led Cirilla to the world of the Aen Elle elves. There she was greeted by Avallac'h, an Aen Saevherne. He explained to her that she had to 'pay the debt' referring to the perceived loss to the Aen Elle when Lara Dorren took Cregennan of Lod as her lover. The elves believed that the latter had 'stolen' Elder Blood from them by marrying Lara. To atone for that 'crime' Avallac'h wanted Ciri to beget a child with Auberon Muircetach, the king of the Aen Elle. That being the only way Avallac'h would let her return to her own world. On their way to Tir ná Lia, the Aen Elle capital, they met Eredin and his Dearg Ruadhri. Ciri was initially quite infatuated with him - he realised that and tried to use it to control her. They also came across a pack of unicorns which appeared to be at war with Aen Elle.

In Tir na Lia Ciri finally met Auberon, who many times tries to conceive a child with her, however he could not - to him she was just a human, a being of no interest for an Aen Elle. Nevertheless he was very proud and refused to admit it. Eredin suggested using a 'potion' which would improve Auberon's performance and allow him to conceive a child with Cirilla. He also told her the truth (probably to gain her trust) - that Avallac'h would never let her go. Knowing this, Ciri found help with the unicorns where she also met Horsey/Ihuarraquax, by then fully grown. The unicorns explained that both Fox and Sparrowhawk had once possessed The Gate of the Worlds, a mystical power known only to those of the Elder Blood but they had lost it. Now they wanted these powers back and for that they needed Ciri. This could not be allowed, however and the unicorns explained to Cirilla how she should escape.

That same day Ciri once again visited Auberon only to find that he had drunk the 'potion' given to him by Eredin. Unknown to Sparrowhawk it happened to be too strong and killed Auberon. That night Ciri attempted to escape Tir na Lia and its barrier by using a boat and swimming with the river's current. She was stopped by Eredin who then revealed his true intentions, being the same as Avallac'h's. The two battled and Ciri proved victorious due to the elf's underestimation of her abilities - she wounded him and threw him into the river. Later on she mounted Kelpie and rode away from Tir na Lia. She met Horsey who offered his help (actually his being by Ciri's side was a part of her bargain with the other unicorns). They came across a huge pile of bones. To her horror, Ciri realised that the skulls had human teeth making them a pile of human bones. Ihuarraquax explained that it had been a human world until the elves led by Fox and Sparrowhawk arrived and killed them all - this also would be the fate of other worlds, including Ciri's own, should Avallac'h and Eredin succeed in once again harnessing the power of time and space. Nevertheless, Ihuarraquax and Ciri realised that they were being chased. Horsey urged Ciri to jump to another world - the only way to escape. She, however didn't know how. The unicorn became her guide and they jumped. This led to the manifestation of Ciri's strongest power, giving her the title of The Lady of the Worlds. That power allowed her to traverse space and time at will. Not being able to control it, however, Ciri had to journey through many different worlds to finally find her own.

At the Stygga castle, Bonhart died at the hand of Ciri.

In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt [ ]

In the prologue, Geralt experiences a dream where he trains a younger Ciri at Kaer Morhen. However, the dream turns into a nightmare, as the Wild Hunt appears, freezing everyone, including Ciri, with Geralt helpless to act.

Having hidden in another world for over half a year the Wild Hunt found Ciri forcing her to flee. At some point Ciri discovered that Geralt had been captured by the Wild Hunt and managed to free him and send him to the forests outside of Kaer Morhen although he lost his memory in the process.

Several months later Ciri along with an elf called Avallac'h returned from another world ending up in Skellige where the Wild Hunt found and attacked them cursing Avallac'h and forcing Ciri to teleport away. This lead her to appear in Crookback Bog where she collapsed and was found by the Crones. The Crones intended to give her to the Wild Hunt however knew that she possessed Elder blood and could not decide whether to cut her up for her blood or not. Ciri realising this escaped and fled into the nearby forest, narrowly evading Imlerith. Traveling west into Velen, she encountered a young girl who was lost and rescued her as well as a local man from a werewolf. She was then taken to Crow's Perch and taken in by Philip Strenger (known as the Bloody Baron) who alongside with his men she befriended. During a race with Philip the two are attacked by a monster and Ciri was forced to use her powers to save him. However, Ciri realised that Wild Hunt would sense her powers so she left Crow's Perch and headed to Novigrad.

Ciri tracked down Dandelion to enlist his help in repairing a phylactery to lift the curse on Avallac'h, though she excluded the identity of her friend. Dandelion suggested going to Cyprian "Whoreson Junior" Willy. Willy later turned on them, capturing and torturing their friend Dudu. Ciri managed to rescue Dudu but her activities got the attention of the Temple Guard, who chased her towards Temple Isle. Just as an crossbowman took a shot at her, Ciri teleported herself to safety.

Ciri teleported all the way to Skellige, where she fell unconscious, dropping into a lake. Avallac'h found her and gave her to the safety of a native Skelliger, Skjall, and his family. When she came to, Ciri accepted the invitation to heal at the local sauna. But soon as she prepared to depart, the Wild Hunt descended on the village, forcing Ciri to flee once more. She found her way to Avallac'h, who was waiting with a boat. But upon seeing Skjall being cut down by a Red Rider, she attempted to turn back to help him, but Avallac'h stunned her with a sleeping spell and took her to the Isle of Mists to hide her from the Hunt.

Ciri was taken in by a company of seven dwarves, who were also stranded on the Isle. She is later found by Geralt, who had managed to lift the curse on Avallac'h, who gave him a magical firefly to lead him to the Isle. After gaining the trust of the dwarves, whose number had been reduced to five, Geralt is allowed to see Ciri. Seeing her prone form, he assumed her dead, until the firefly merges with her, stirring the young woman awake. Geralt and Ciri catch up on what happened to the latter. Ciri reveals Eredin's motive for pursuing her, explaining that the Aen Elle world faces annihilation, so the King of the Hunt seeks to use her to power the portal to allow his army to conquer the Continent, even at the risk of Ciri's life.

As they prepare to leave, they discover the dwarves had taken Geralt's boat and fled the Isle, before spotting the Wild Hunt's flagship, the Naglfar, in the distance, forcing Ciri to teleport them directly to Kaer Morhen. Upon arrival, Ciri is happily reunited with Vesemir, Yennefer and Triss.

However, the time for celebration was cut short, as the Hunt would soon assault the aging keep. Ciri was ordered to remain inside the keep while everyone else defended her. Triss provided Ciri with a magical amulet to call down a magical fireball. However, Ciri defies orders and goes to help Triss when she came under attack by Hunt warriors. She later assisted Eskel against Caranthir, before the Hunt general hears a war horn signalling him to retreat.

Ultimately, the Hunt breaches Kaer Morhen, freezing everyone except for Ciri and Vesemir. They are then attacked by Imlerith, allowing Eredin to finally get a hold of Ciri. But as he dragged her towards a portal, Vesemir breaks off from Imlerith and engages Eredin, forcing the elf to release Ciri. As Imlerith charged at the elderly witcher, Vesemir used Aard to push Ciri away as the large elf lifts him up by the throat. Surrounded by the Wild Hunt and with her mentor held hostage, Ciri dropped her sword in surrender. However, Vesemir stabbed Imlerith, prompted the general to snap his neck, killing him. In grief and anguish, Ciri unleashed a magical scream that affected the Hunt. Calanthir conjured a portal, which Imlerith fled through, but Eredin desperately stumbled towards Ciri. Calanthir recognized his king would die in the attempt and forcibly dragged Eredin through the portal. But Ciri's power had gone out of control, threatening to kill everyone in Kaer Morhen had not Avallac'h intervened and stopped her.

While cremating Vesemir, Ciri started to regret returning to Kaer Morhen, despite Geralt's attempts to calm her, as she snatched Vesemir's medallion off the pyre. Subsequently, Ciri tried to involve herself in a discussion between Geralt, Avallac'h, Yennefer and Triss over reassembling the Lodge of Sorceresses to fight the Hunt. She becomes angry that decisions are being made without her and departs their company.

A few days later, Ciri becomes disheartened that her training with Avallac'h hadn't be progressing well. Geralt can either cheer her up with a snowball fight or sour her with Lambert's famous home brew.

Ciri then engages in private conversation with Emhyr but later stormed out, angry at his attempts to buy her.

Ge'els attempts to sow animosity between Ciri and Avallac'h, but it fails. Corinne Tilly, an oneiromancer, shows everyone through dreams of Eredin's regicide.

They soon encounter a she-elf, claiming to be Avallac'h's lover, who proceeds to insult Ciri, calling her a degenernate half-breed and that Avallac'h despises that he needs her. Her words anger Ciri so much that she wants to tear up the lab. Geralt can support her and aid in the ransacking, cheering her up, or calm her down and fasten Lara Dorren's necklace around her neck, depressing her.

Once outside, Ciri asks to go to Hindersfjall to see Skjall, only to be told of his death. If Geralt refuses, it depresses her. If he agrees to accompany her, they either meet up later or teleport there. Upon arrival, Ciri learns that Skjall was never buried, instead thrown on a corpse heap. After finding his corpse and giving it a proper burial, they are accosted by a band of villagers, who take issue with their defiance against their elders' writ, as Skjall was dishonoured and his name stricken.

Final Fate [ ]

Depending on Geralt's interactions with her on crucial points, Ciri will either survive or die during her final battle against the White Frost. There are three possible endings for Ciri.

Ciri dies [ ]

If Geralt has made three out of five negative decisions with Ciri, like assisting her to her meeting with the Lodge of Sorceresses or telling her to calm down when she loses her temper after visiting Avallac'h's laboratory, Ciri will feel unconfident of herself during her final battle. She will still defeat the White Frost but will die in the process. Geralt will hunt down and slay the last Crone who escaped Ciri's wrath previously. After killing the last Crone, Geralt will furiously search for the medallion that the Crone stole from Ciri. He will find the medallion but will also be consumed by grief while the hut he's in gets surrounded by monsters. Geralt's fate is left unknown at that point.

Ciri becomes a witcher [ ]

If Geralt has made three out of five positive decisions with her, like letting her trash Avallac'h's laboratory or encouraging her to meet the Lodge alone and did not bring her to Emhyr var Emreis, Ciri will defeat the White Frost and survive in process. Later Geralt will pay a last visit to the emperor and lie to him about Ciri's fate, telling that Ciri has stopped the White Frost but paid the ultimate price for it. Emhyr will send Geralt away and tell him that he does not wish to see him ever again. Geralt makes his way to White Orchard where he will recieve a unique silver sword for someone in particular. He will then make his way to the inn to meet with the mysterious person, who turns out to be Ciri. Ciri will accept Geralt's gift and will officially become a witcher.

Ciri becomes the Empress of Nilfgaard [ ]

Combat style [ ].

In certain parts of the story, the player will take control of Ciri. Due to her witcher training at Kaer Morhen, Ciri fights nearly identical to Geralt, though there are differences as well. Unlike Geralt, Ciri is unable to cast signs, cannot drink potions, cannot parry or use strong attacks and does not possess Witcher senses. Ciri instead posssesses three special abilities as a result of her Elder Blood. One of them is called "blink," which allows Ciri to teleport behind her foes and hit multiple enemies in a row, sometimes going in a killstreak. Another ability is called "magic stone," which is recieved during the Battle of Kaer Morhen. It allows Ciri to summon a fireball towards her position, which could however hurt her if she does not move away. The third ability is called "charge," which allows Ciri to dash at enemies and deal a colossal amout of damage to any enemy on her path.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

Elder blood: As a descendant of Lara Dorren Ciri possess an Elder Blood gene (also known Hen Ichaer or Lara gene) that allows her to Travel to another worlds and dimensions. Elder Blood also allows her to carry very powerful magic.

The Witcher: Geralt And Ciri’s Relationship, Explained

Geralt and Ciri's bond took different forms in the show and books, and we take a deeper look as we wait for season 2.

Netflix's breakout series The Witcher , based on Andrzej Sapkowski's series of novels and short stories, harbors an intensively detailed plot and intricate relationships.

The focal point of the first season is Geralt's hunt for Ciri, which may be tough to grasp for some viewers, given the show's non-linear timeline . Moreover, various scenes and personalities are adapted for the screen.

WARNING: Book Spoilers!

Geralt's Child Surprise

The Cintran Ball, at which we learn of the Law of Surprise, plays out more or less in the same fashion between the books and Netflix series, despite some minor details. One of the more pertinent changes, however, regards how Geralt came to claim the Law of Surprise.

Henry Cavill's portrayal of Geralt, in the Netflix series, plays the matter down in a nonchalant manner, uninterested in claiming any reward at all. When pressed for an answer, he shoots off that he'll claim the same as Duny; "Give me what you have but do not know." At Queen Calanthe's (Jodhi May) indignation to the claim, however, Geralt assures her he won't be returning to claim crops or an unborn pup.

This is in direct contrast to the books, where Geralt expresses witchers have no lineage in which to pass down their profession and brazenly claims the law of surprise. Geralt then declares he will return in six years in hopes of claiming a protegee.

True to his word, the witcher does return to Cintra only to encounter an ever indignant Queen Calanthe, who attempts to outwit Geralt by having him pick his destined child of surprise from one of the common town's children instead. The witcher isn't fooled, nor is he interested in trading one life for another but doesn't push Calanthe to relinquish her true grandchild. In the book, this is how the Queen succeeds in making Geralt believe she has a male heir instead of a granddaughter.

Though the scenarios play out in different manners, the show depicts this trickery as well. Calanthe offers up an imposter Ciri directly, which doesn't fool the witcher. This is where the scene of Geralt observing Ciri (Freya Allan) disguised amongst a group of boys comes into play.

First Encounters

In the books, Geralt and Ciri originally meet in Brokilon Forest, well before viewers meet the little lion cub in the events of the show. While Netflix still depicts Ciri's visit to Brokilon, the circumstances and where this excursion falls in the timeline, differ pretty wildly. In-turn, Ciri's decision to either remain with the elves in Brokilon or leave to pursue her destiny plays out quite differently as the books place Geralt by her side throughout the entire ordeal.

In the show, we see Geralt try to avoid his destiny, namely by blatantly ignoring it. However, his denial is all the more prevalent in the books as he has already rescued and taken on the charge of protecting Ciri once, looked destiny in the face, and coldly rejected it. After meeting Mouseack on the road, Geralt leaves Ciri with him, turning his back on destiny despite the girl's pleas.

But as viewers learned in the first season of the show, Geralt cannot run from his destiny. Spurred on in part by some of Ciri's conscious choices in both the books and the show, the witcher and Ciri cross paths again in the same fashion portrayed in the season finale- despite some discrepancies regarding Geralt's whereabouts during the massacre of Cintra.

What's Next?

RELATED:  Rumor: The Witcher Season 2 Is Adding Another Game Of Thrones Actor

If the second season continues the show's generally apt depiction of the books, Geralt will bring Ciri to Kaer Morhen, which will be fans' first glimpse of the witchers' stronghold as is also the case in the books.

Netflix is likely taking this direction,  given the casting of Geralt's mentor -and oldest remaining witcher- Vesimir (Kim Bodnia) . Along with Geralt's peers, Lambert (Paul Bullion), Eskel (Thue Ersted Rasmussen), and Coën (Yasen Atour).

Will The Games Tie In?

While Freya Allan portrays a slightly older version of Ciri on-screen than Sapkowski depicts in the books, she's certainly no witcher-girl as players know her from The Witcher 3 . But the Wild Hunt is mentioned in the episode "Of Banquets, Bastards, and Burials."

A little way into the novels, it also becomes apparent the Wild Hunt knows of Ciri and begins pursuing her rather early on in her adventures after Kaer Morhen.

Taking these hints and parallels into account, it's feasible viewers could begin to see traces of The Wild Hunt on screen. Possibly as early as the season 2 finale, or a later season, if the series continues to garner success.

The abundant use of artistic license coupled with Sapkowski's already elaborate storyline makes for a complex screen adaptation. But if one thing is made clear by the end of season 1, it's that Geralt and Ciri are indeed drawn together by destiny.

‘The Witcher’ Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: It's All Connected

The gang is back together, but at what cost?

Editor's Note: The below contains spoilers for The Witcher Season 3, Episode 4.

With each new episode, Season 3 of The Witcher approaches what seems to be the most significant conflict the series has seen so far. Episode 4, “The Invitation,” keeps this trend by getting the whole gang back together in Aretuza, the den of a powerful unknown mage who has nefarious purposes for Ciri’s ( Freya Allan ) unique magic abilities . By now, we are all confident that things will end bloody before the mid-season finale, as there’s just no way so many opposing forces will find a peaceful way to solve their differences. Still, while the storm is on the horizon, Season 3, Episode 4 also allows its main character to enjoy some calm, forging emotional bonds that’ll be put to the test when swords start to swing.

The Battle on the Raft

After rescuing Ciri from the Wild Hunt , Geralt of Rivia ( Henry Cavill ) tells his daughter they should go to Aretuza. Ciri initially fled Yennefer ( Anya Chalotra ) because she didn’t want to spend time with the pompous and self-centered mages of Aretuza. Nevertheless, Ciri knows Geralt must have his reasons and still follows the White Wolf. So, Geralt and Ciri meet Jaskier ( Joey Batey ) to board a raft that will help them travel straight to the Brotherhood of Sorcerers' headquarters.

Once they get to the raft, however, the trio finds that it won’t depart due to the threat of a monster. Wanting to show how good she has become at monster hunting, Ciri convinces Geralt to offer their services in exchange for a free ride. Feeling safe with the presence of a Witcher, the raft owner decides to leave port and take the passengers to Aretuza, and the trio is joined by a musical group led by Valdo Marx ( Nathan Armakwei Laryea ), Jaskier’s nemesis. Valdo and his troupe were invited to perform at Aretuza’s Conclave of Mages, which only makes Jaskier more irritated by his presence.

Despite warnings from Ciri and Geralt, Valdo and his musicians still find the need to steal the spotlight and start to sing in the middle of the trip. The noise attracts an aeschna, the aquatic creature that threatened to drive the raft’s owner out of business. The aeschna knocks down one of Valdo’s fellow musicians before Geralt and Ciri engage the beast. Their combat is fierce, with Ciri showing how much she learned under Geralt’s tutelage. Ciri is even the one to land the final blow to the aeschna, an action that makes Geralt visibly proud.

After the fight, Ciri teases Geralt with the idea of leaving the Continent’s strife behind and forging a new life, hunting monsters for gold. Impressed by how much Ciri has grown, Geralt shares the horrors he witnessed at the abandoned castle in Episode 2 with the girl. The villain behind Rience ( Sam Woolf ) wants to control Ciri’s power, and he has been hurting dozens of girls as part of his twisted experiments. As such, Geralt and Ciri must go to Aretuza, unveil the truth, and slay Rience’s master. Otherwise, they would just be dooming more innocent lives. Ciri agrees with Geralt, and while she’s still unsure about her purpose, she knows they must do whatever it takes to take down the monstrous mage behind everything.

Yennefer Is Targeted by the Unknown Mage

While Geralt, Ciri, and Jaskier travel to Aretuza, Yennefer presents herself to the Brotherhood of Sorcerers to ask for a Conclave. The mages are still mad at Yennefer for choosing not to execute Cahir ( Eamon Farren ), a decision that shattered the trust of the Northern Kingdoms in the Brotherhood. Still, Yennefer is humble and apologetic, convincing the Brotherhood that union is the only thing that can save them from the Nilfgaardian threat. Because of that, the Brotherhood is almost unanimous in support of Yennefer’s idea. One of the few mages who don’t vote in favor of the Conclave is Stregobor ( Lars Mikkelsen ), who we know from Episode 1 is working with Rience.

All the mages of Aretuza start to send invitations and prepare the premises for the Conclave of Mages, hoping to host all the magic wielders of the Continent and put their differences aside. Since some mages are harder to convince than others, Yennefer volunteers to deliver Philippa's ( Cassie Clare ) invitation in person. So, Yennefer goes to Redania through a portal conjured by Vilgefortz ( Mahesh Jadu ), a gateway that’s supposedly impossible to be intercepted.

In Redania, Yennefer meets Dijkstra ( Graham McTavish ) and Philippa at the queen's funeral. At first, the mage and the spymaster refuse to attend the Conclave as they don’t think the Brotherhood can help them achieve their goals. However, King Vizimir ( Ed Birch ) realizes Yennefer is at the funeral and confronts her. Yennefer uses the occasion to apologize and preach about the need to unite the North against Nilfgaard. Since the king thinks Nilfgaard assassinated his wife, he orders Dijkstra and Philippa to attend the Conclave. Vizimir also sends his brother, Prince Radovid ( Hugh Skinner ), to report on the event.

Everything seems to unfold as Yennefer wants it, but when she jumps back into the portal to Aretuza, she gets teleported to distant shores, where Geralt awaits her. Geralt asks Yennefer where Ciri is. Confused, the mage replies she thought the girl was with her father. Geralt then attacks Yennefer. Realizing that everything is part of an illusion, Yennefer fights back and jumps through another portal to Aretuza. Vilgefortz’s portal was intercepted after all, and now the enemy knows the whereabouts of Ciri.

‘The Witcher’ Season 3 Sets the Stage for a Huge Fight

Once Geralt, Ciri, and Jaskier arrive in Aretuza, the whole party is back together. Ciri apologizes to Yennefer for escaping, and the two mend their broken bond. Geralt also meets Yennefer with a kiss and warm embrace, showing he has forgiven her for her past mistakes. Furthermore, Jaskier and Ciri have some time to spend alone, growing closer to each other. Finally, Radovid knocks at Jaskier’s door, which leads the two men to profess their passion for each other and make love. There’s a lot of character growth packed in Season 3, Episode 4, and it feels great that our protagonists find the time to enjoy each other’s company before fate inevitably tears them all apart. That’s because The Witcher is setting the stage for a huge fight.

By discussing the clues they collected in their adventures, Geralt and Yennefer conclude Stregobor must be the mage behind everything, which makes sense considering his inclination for bizarre experiments. They can’t just kill Stregobor, though, as first, they must present proof of his actions before the Brotherhood. Similarly, Dijkstra and Philippa decide to use the Conclave to expose Rience’s true master and eliminate the competition. Finally, Triss ( Anna Shaffer ) and Istredd ( Royce Pierreson ) join forces to investigate the disappearance of Aretuza’s students and the vanishing of the Book of Monoliths. And after they use a location spell to learn the book's whereabouts, they supposedly figure out the identity of the person behind all the woes afflicting the Brotherhood. Together, they also want to use the Conclave to reveal the truth. While many different players are in action, everyone’s objectives finally converge. It’s almost time for the battle to begin.

Is Nilfgaard Crashing the Party?

While almost every main character of The Witcher is in Aretuza by the time Episode 4 ends, some major forces still make their moves elsewhere. After killing his friend Gallatin ( Robbie Amell ) to prove his allegiance to Nilfgaard, Cahir receives a mysterious mission from the Emperor ( Bart Edwards ). And while we don’t know the details of this mission, we know it involves Francesca ( Mecia Simson ) and an invitation that looks much like the ones sent to announce the Conclave of Mages.

Cahir takes men, supplies, and weapons to Francesca’s camp, revealing that Gallatin tried to perform a coup but was stopped by the White Flame. Cahir also tells Francesca they should be working together to find Ciri. In doing so, the White Flame is willing to let Francesca use the girl’s power to find Elves a new home, while Francesca’s forces can ensure the young princess will sit on the throne of Nilfgaard. Francesca is unconvinced until Cahir gives her the piece of paper he got from the Emperor. After that, Francesca agrees to work once more for the White Flame. And considering what’s happening elsewhere, it seems likely Nilfgaard will crash the Aretuza party.

Episode 4 also includes two tiny loose threads that might pay off later this season. For starters, once Fringilla ( Mimi Ndiweni ) escapes Nilfgaard’s dungeons, she decides to party like there’s no tomorrow. However, she gains a new mysterious purpose after she learns boats are being attacked. In addition, King Vizimir sends one of his commanders to summon the Navy of Redania to seize Aretuza, but the man is murdered on his way to the military camp. We don’t know why the commander was killed and what Vizimir’s intentions are with sending troops to Aretuza. But once all hell breaks loose in the next episode, we should know better how these hanging threads are connected to the Conclave of Mages.

The Witcher Season 3, Volume 1 is currently available on Netflix. Volume 2 will be released on July 27.

What 11 'The Witcher' season 3 filming locations look like in real life

  • Warning: Major spoilers for "The Witcher" season three.
  • The new season was filmed in multiple locations across the world including Italy, Wales, and Slovenia.
  • From Shaerrawedd to Nilfgaard, here's how "The Witcher" world compares to the filming locations.

At the beginning of season three, Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer travel across the Continent for safe refuge.

ciri and travel

Season three of "The Witcher" begins with the main trio, Geralt (Henry Cavill), Ciri (Freya Allan), and Yennefer (Anya Chalotri), on the run from numerous enemies.

After it is revealed across the Continent that Ciri has a powerful gene called Elder Blood , every kingdom sends mercenaries after her so that they can use her for their own means.

In the first episode, the trio gets settled into a new location, Yennefer begins to train Ciri to use her powers, and then they have to move again when trouble finds them.

The first house the trio lives in is situated near a beach.

This scene was likely filmed on the island of Krk in Croatia.

ciri and travel

According to Redanian Intelligence , Zala Beach on Krk, an island in Croatia, was one of the filming locations for the third season of "The Witcher."

This is likely where the opening scene was filmed due to the similarities in the landscape.

Zala Beach is one of an estimated 96 beaches on Krk, which is the largest Croatian island and one of the largest islands in the Adriatic Sea — the body of water between the Italian Peninsula and the Balkans.

After their first home is burned down, the trio finds another home in the mountains.

ciri and travel

At this location, Yennefer teaches Ciri how to bring a tree back to life, and Geralt and Ciri go hunting together.

When Geralt sees a group of people on the horizon, he makes them all leave again to find another refuge.

The Nanos plateau in Slovenia appears to be where they filmed.

ciri and travel

In 2022, Redanian Intelligence reported that "The Witcher" crew was filming in the region of the Nanos plateau in Slovenia.

The church in the area, St. Jerome, looks similar to the location in "The Witcher."

The trio finally settles for some time in huts in a wintery forest.

ciri and travel

It's winter by the time the trio reach the next location and they decide to settle down in two huts owned by Geralt's friend , Yarpen Zigrin (Jeremy Crawford).

This quiet lasts a little longer than their previous stays until they are tracked down by a rogue mage called Rience (Sam Woolf).

In real life, this scene was shot in Laghi di Fusine, in northern Italy.

ciri and travel

In 2022, the official "Witcher" Twitter account announced that season three had begun filming with an image of Cavill, Allan, and Chalotra on set in a snowy location.

The Metro reported that this location is the northern Italian lake, Laghi di Fusine. The lake is found near the city of Tarvisio, and the border between Italy and Slovenia.

In his attempt to track down Rience and his boss, Geralt journeys to a mysterious castle.

ciri and travel

In episode two, Geralt tries to track down Rience in order to keep Ciri safe. His adventure brings him to a seemingly abandoned castle in Redania.

This was shot at Predjama Castle in Slovenia.

ciri and travel

"The Witcher" team also filmed part of the season at Predjama Castle in Slovenia, according to production notes for season three.

The notes said that the crew only shot the exterior of Vuilpanne Castle, the abandoned castle in the show, at the Slovenian castle, which is over 800 years old.

The castle is built in the middle of a 123-meter-high cliff.

At the end of episode three, Ciri is chased in the forest by the Wild Hunt.

ciri and travel

At the end of episode three, Ciri is chased through a forest by the Wild Hunt, a group of ghoulish elves that are after the young princess and her power.

Ciri is eventually saved by Geralt, who coincidentally bumps into her in the same forest.

England's Swinley Forest appears to be the location for this scene.

ciri and travel

According to the Metro, "The Witcher" director Gandja Monteiro shared on his Instagram stories last year that the show was filming in Swinley Forest in England.

Images of the forest look similar to the one in which Ciri rides in this scene.

Geralt, Jaskier, and Ciri have to travel by boat to meet up with Yennefer in episode four.

ciri and travel

In episode four, after Ciri and Geralt reunite, they head toward Aretuza in order to catch up with Yennefer.

In order to do so, they must board a ferry to reach the island. Ciri, Geralt, and Jaskier (Joey Batey) discuss their journey atop a cliff before boarding the ferry.

Nash Point in south Wales is likely the location for this scene.

ciri and travel

Redanian Intelligence reported that season three included shoots at four locations in Wales. One of those locations is Nash Point, a headland and beach located in south Wales.

The cliffs in Nash Point look similar to the cliff in episode four.

While Yennefer is waiting for her comrades, she is tricked into a portal and attacked.

ciri and travel

While waiting for her friends to return to her, Yennefer sees a portal, which she assumes will lead to them.

Instead, she is brought to a misty dark, and rocky landscape where she is attacked by a fake Geralt. She quickly gets rid of the illusion and escapes back to Aretuza.

This scene appears to be shot in south Wales too.

ciri and travel

The second location in south Wales that the "The Witcher" team filmed in, according to Redanian Intelligence , is Trefil Quarry.

The appearance of the land looks similar to the background of the illusion scene in episode four, and the scene where Geralt and Yennefer fight Rience in episode six.

The trio eventually arrives in Aretuza to meet up with Yennefer.

ciri and travel

After defeating a monster called Aeschena while on the ferry, Geralt and the crew land on the island of Aretuza.

Llantwit Major Beach in south Wales may have been the location for this scene.

ciri and travel

Redanian Intelligence also reported that Llantwit Major Beach was used as a location in season three.

The rocky formations of the beach look like the same cliff face that we see in episode four when the crew arrives in Aretuza.

In episode six, Geralt faces off against the sorcerer Vilgefortz to protect Ciri.

ciri and travel

In episode six, there is a massive battle in Aretuza as multiple parties try to capture Ciri. First, the Redanian kingdom leads a coup to take over the sorcerers' base, but they fail . Then the Nilfgaardian kingdom attacks the same stronghold, aided by one of the sorcerers, Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu).

While Geralt tries to get Ciri to safety, they are confronted by Vilgefortz. Geralt fights Vilgefortz to buy time for Ciri to escape.

This scene was filmed on Gower Beach in south Wales.

ciri and travel

In 2022, Wales Online reported that a fight scene for "The Witcher" season three was being filmed on Gower Beach at Three Cliffs Bay in south Wales.

Pictures show Cavill and Jadu filming scenes, presumably from episode six.

In episode seven, Ciri is trapped in a desert wasteland.

ciri and travel

After Vilgefortz defeats Geralt, he tries to capture Ciri. Ciri instead enters a tower on Aretuza that surrounds one of the power monuments in the "Witcher" world. Ciri uses its power to defeat Vilgefortz and destroy the tower, but because she cannot control it, it also sends her to a desert landscape.

She spends most of episode seven trying to survive and return home.

Episode seven was mostly filmed in the Sahara Desert.

ciri and travel

The production notes for season three reveal that the Korath Desert, where Ciri gets trapped, was shot in the Sahara Desert near Erfoud, Morocco.

However, the notes also said that the night shoots were disrupted by sandstorms so the crew used Sibelco Quarry in Buckinghamshire, England, instead.

At the end of the season, Emhyr finally reunites with his daughter.

ciri and travel

One of the major villains in the series is Emhyr (Bart Edwards), the tyrannical emperor of the Nilfgaardian,  and Ciri's father.

In the season three finale , Ciri appears to be captured and returned to the emperor. However, when they reunite in a ceremony in the Nilgaardian banquet hall, viewers realize that "Ciri" is actually Teryn (Frances Pooley), a girl who has been hypnotized and believes she is Ciri.

Emhyr doesn't realize it is not her daughter and welcomes her to his kingdom, allowing Vilgefortz, his right-hand sorcerer, to continue with his plan.

This scene was filmed in Guildford Cathedral in England.

ciri and travel

The location was also used in another Netflix fantasy show, "The Sandman."

Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.

The witcher season 3's cahir twist was great - but what happens to him next is more shocking.

The Witcher season 3 gave a surprising twist to Cahir's story, but that's only the beginning of an even more shocking change in his near future.

Warning: spoilers for The Witcher season 3

  • Cahir's redemption arc in The Witcher season 3 was well-executed and showcased his complex character development.
  • Cahir's loyalty to the White Flame is now in question as he starts to think for himself and realizes the consequences of his actions.
  • While Cahir's redemption is just beginning, what happens next will be shocking for those unfamiliar with the books.

The Witcher season 3 saw Cahir’s return to the Nilfgaardian army, and though he seemed to be loyal to the Emperor again, Part 2 brought a major twist to his story – but what comes next for him is even more shocking. The Witcher season 3 was packed with action and drama, as it covered some major events from the books that completely changed the stories of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Ciri. The Witcher season 3 finally saw these three characters together as a family and doing their best to stay safe and close to each other, but unfortunately, that didn’t last for long.

With half the Continent going after Ciri , it was only a matter of time before Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri were separated, but they never expected the chaotic events that unfolded after the conclave at Aretuza. The Thanedd Coup forced Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer to part ways, with Yennefer leaving first to aid Tissaia, while Geralt and Ciri planned to leave together. On their way out of the island, they came across Cahir, and although this was a perfect opportunity for Cahir to capture Ciri and take her to the White Flame, The Witcher gave Cahir a major twist.

Why Cahir's Redemption Arc In The Witcher Season 3 Worked So Well

Cahir started out as a villain in season 1, but the subsequent seasons have shown that he’s actually a complex character. Cahir started as a loyal knight of Nilfgaard, who after the Battle of Sodden Hill, was captured, held prisoner, and tortured by the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, but he escaped thanks to Yennefer. Cahir rejoined Fringilla and the Nilfgaardian army, but the White Flame caught their lies and punished them: Fringilla was imprisoned, and Cahir was sent to raid caravans.

Cahir returned to Nilfgaard and regained the Emperor’s trust, but he wasn’t entirely sure of his loyalty to the White Flame. When reuniting with Fringilla during the battle in Aretuza, Fringilla told Cahir “ it’s amazing what you can do when you think for yourself ”, leading Cahir to rethink his alliances. When Cahir came across Ciri and Geralt, he turned himself in, but the Princess wanted to fight him. Cahir explained he wanted to die for what he did to her and gave her his life, but the Scoia’tael arrived and Cahir stopped them so Ciri and Geralt could escape.

Cahir has been through a lot in just three seasons, and he has been on pretty much all sides of the battles as the leader of the Nilfgaardian army, a prisoner, a man on the run, and a betrayed knight. Cahir is finally thinking by himself and isn’t looking for the approval of the White Flame, realizing that everything he had done so far had only caused pain and suffering to others, especially Ciri. Cahir giving Ciri a chance to kill him is only the beginning of his redemption arc, but what happens next will be a lot more shocking to those not familiar with the books.

What Happens Next To Cahir In The Witcher: Future With Geralt & Final Fate

In The Witcher books, Cahir doesn't surrender to Ciri, but he is labeled a traitor by the White Flame, who puts out an arrest warrant on Cahir for sending a fake Ciri, though Cahir had nothing to do with that, and for not returning to Nilfgaard for his failure. Cahir is rescued by an elf who later learns about the arrest warrant, so he agrees to be tied up, placed inside a coffin, and sent to Nilfgaard. However, Geralt, Jaskier, and Milva are in the surroundings when the coffin arrives, and are surprised to find a tied Cahir inside. Geralt helps Cahir escape under the warning of not crossing paths again or the witcher will kill him, but Cahir ends up shadowing Geralt and company.

When Geralt catches Cahir following them, the knight tells him he wants to join the search for Ciri, but Geralt refuses. After more travels and Cahir saving Milva, the latter is key in convincing Geralt to let Cahir join them. During the assault on Stygga to save Ciri, Cahir battles Leo Bonhart, but is defeated and killed. Cahir is on his way to being part of Geralt’s new team in Netflix’s The Witcher , but it’s to be seen if he will have the same fate as in the books.

This New Luxury Travel Company Features Carbon-neutral Trips to the Dolomites, Victoria Falls, Amazon, and More

The 30 itineraries — all tested by the founders — include adventures in the Seychelles, Rwanda, Dolomites, Yellowstone, and Slovenia.

Katie Katz/Courtesy of Few & Far

Brit Sarah Dusek and her American husband Jacob Dusek have always viewed the world through a lens of possibilities. The couple met in Taipei, Taiwan, nearly two decades ago and started out raising their two sons in Montana — all while they launched what has become one of the preeminent glamping companies in the country, Under Canvas . It disrupted the old standards of rustic camping and replaced it with chic, eco-friendly safari-style tents against the background of some of the most iconic U.S. destinations.

Now they’ve taken that same mindful model of meaningful outdoor experiences into the luxury travel space, debuting a new brand last month: Few & Far . It's a sustainable company dedicated to carbon-neutral exploration. “The heart of all of it is the magical connection there is when people connect with nature in extraordinary ways,” Sarah Dusek told Travel + Leisure.

Each of the 30 itineraries available on the site right now are ones that someone from the Dusek family has experienced first-hand, providing a personal level of curation and paired with a focus on putting sustainability first.

Among her favorite trips offered are the Rwanda Gorilla Trek and Masai Mara Wildlife Adventure , a 12-day itinerary with visits to Kigali and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Masai Mara in Kenya, and Zanzibar in Tanzania. She took a group of female CEOs on the journey last October, saying that “it was absolutely mind-blowing and extraordinary” and that “every single woman on the trip said it was by far the most incredible trip she’s been on.”

Another highlight is the five-day San Juan Islands Tented Camp Experience , a tailored group trip with accommodations set up specifically for each group. On Sarah Dusek’s own visit, she took about eight female CEOs there for a “boutique, five-star tented experience under the stars on a farm,” where they arrived by seaplane and then sea kayaked, hiked, and enjoyed outdoor farm-to-table dinners. The best part: every person could rest assured that their stay used 70 percent less water consumption than staying at an average hotel.

Her own family traveled last Christmas inspired the Enchanting Southern Africa itinerary, a 12-day getaway from Cape Town up to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, before heading to a houseboat on the Chobe River in Botswana. “It was so special because you could be right on the water watching the wildlife morning, noon, and night,” she said. “The boys could fish and we could traverse up and down the Zambezi, experiencing a different view each day.”

After that, the trip boards the luxurious Rovos Rail through Hwange National Park in Bulawayo to Pretoria, before ending in Johannesburg.

Having test-driven every single one of the itineraries on her own is what makes Few & Far’s curation so special. “All of these are very personal to us,” Sarah Dusek said. “They're an expression of who we are — and we love to share them.”

Launching a new travel company was never the intention, with the Duseks selling off Under Canvas in 2019 and moving their family to Cape Town, where they worked as venture capitalists helping empower and fund female entrepreneurs. But they continued to be avid travelers, committed to exposing their sons, now 12 and 15, to as many cultures and perspectives as possible.

During a trip to the Forgotten Mountain’s remote region in northern South Africa’s Limpopo province along the Zimbabwe border, they knew they had stumbled upon something special in UNESCO’s Vhembe Biosphere Reserve . Soon, they had bought a 10,000-acre space, where they’re now set to debut as the 60-room Few & Far Luvhondo eco-lodge at the end of this year. Inspired by weaver bird nests, the site will include a solar-powered aerial experience with a cable car system featuring a 40-kilometer (about a 25-mile) track to provide a uniquely immersive way to explore the African bush and its wildlife.

“We hadn't planned on coming back to the commercial travel space again, but are still so passionate about travel and we still love curating extraordinary experiences,” Sarah Dusek said. “We kept thinking about the safari experience and how to reimagine it for our children and how we could incorporate conservation and travel.”

That forward-thinking eco-first philosophy is what drives all of the Duseks’ efforts. “Outdoor tourism can do so much good,” Sarah Dusek said. “There can be so much harmony with creating an economy, stimulating jobs, preserving wildlife, making sure that our habitats are protected, and that we don't lose biodiversity.”

In fact, through a combination of conservation efforts — largely from tree planting, as well as wetlands management, rewilding, and restoring — the eco-lodge should be on track to sequester as much as 100,000 more tons of carbon a year than it currently does. That’s especially meaningful since the 10,000 acres they own have more biodiversity than in all of Europe.

Additionally, she started looking at the possibilities of helping the rural people, many of whom live in poverty and are generating a revenue stream through tourism. “You start educating people about the difference of what happens when we conserve and protect the land and start investing in the people and then you start to ripple effects in so many levels," she said.

Ultimately, what drives Sarah Dusek is her own dedication to instilling these values in her kids. “I want to show my kids how extraordinary our planet is and I want them to fall in love with it,” she said. “When you're out in it, magic happens and the chances of falling in love with the planet are infinitely greater.”

All of those facets come together in each of the trips through Few & Far — and she hopes that every traveler will be taken by the impact of their adventures. “Travel changes us and has the power to change a belief pattern,” she said. “It shows us that the way we live is not the way everyone lives and maybe not the right way to live.”

In particular that happens the most when she’s out on the great outdoors. “The more time I have spent in the natural world, the more I learn about the people, behaviors, patterns, and cultures in our world,” she said. “That makes us richer and gives us all a chance to realize gosh, all the little things matter.”

For a full list of Few & Far’s trips, which range from $10,000 to $50,000 per trip, visit Few and Far's site .

By Tim Li, Aviation Analyst at Cirium Ascend Consultancy

As we move into the second quarter of the year, the Cirium Fleets Analyzer database logged slightly below 450 new order commitments for the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector since the beginning of this year, taking the total to slightly over 13,500. The AAM market is inching closer to some of its initial target dates for operation, including Volocopter vowing to begin operations during the Paris Olympics 2024. Some progress has been made in the first quarter, with EHang kickstarting its public sale of the E216-S after obtaining the world’s first type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), and other OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) obtaining production organization approvals (POAs) from their regulators, which further paves the way towards production of the designs. However, there is still no absolute certainty that these operations will be realised.

Data coverage Includes:

eVTOL – Urban Air Mobility (UAM)

The total number of order commitments captured by Cirium Fleets Analyzer for the eVTOL sector is now slightly above 10,300. EVE Air Mobility and Vertical Aerospace continue to stand out as the OEMs with the most order commitments, even though they did not record any new in the past nine months. These new commitments are predominantly from the Asia Pacific region and are lacking familiar names like lessors that previously logged.

Sustaining Financing: A Vital Component for Industry Growth

According to Cirium data, there has been a decrease in the rate of growth of order commitments. In the past six months, the net growth of total commitments amounted to just slightly below 600 units, with around 80% of activity from the Asia Pacific region. Overall, these order commitments observed represents a decline of over 50% compared to the previous six-month period. However, during this stage in the development cycle, a slowdown in the rate of orders is not unexpected. As per Cirium’s Fleets Analyzer database, there are currently more than 20 designs registered that have received order commitments, with new entrants continuing to emerge. These factors indicate that enthusiasm towards the AAM market has not yet started to fade.

ciri and travel

An order commitment generally means payment is committed to be made in the future and is often subject to agreed terms and conditions. An example of such a condition is meeting development timelines. While commitments can increase the confidence of investors and eventually translate into payments, they are often not an immediate source of cashflow for the OEM. Product development, particularly of such pioneering technology, is both lengthy and costly. To achieve any milestones set out to fulfil promises and thereby the ability to realise the AAM vision, the OEMs will continue to require new financing, either from their parent companies, governments or existing/new investors.

A decrease in direct financing would have significant implications for the future development of the industry. In order to ensure continued support for product development and marketing efforts, consolidation could be something to watch for in the near to medium-term future.

Business Electric – Multi Engine

ciri and travel

The total tally of order commitments for the electric business aircraft sector now stands over 3,200, marking an increase of approximately 500 commitments in the last six months. The Dallas-based JSX Airlines accounts for over 330 of them, spreading across types including Aura Aero’s ERA, Electra’s eSTOL, and Heart Aerospace’s ES-30. Electra’s eSTOL also received an additional commitment from US-based regional aircraft operators Surf Air (90), as well as from India’s Jet Set Go (50).

*The European startup Maeve Aerospace has revised its strategy and introduced a new concept, an 80-seater hybrid-electric aircraft dubbed the M80. This means that the original M01 44-seater is now on hold. It remains uncertain whether the initial orders will be transferred.

Most designs for this larger gauge concepts have now diverted from the vision of the aircraft being fully powered by electricity alone, and are instead based on a hybrid concept.

The Cirium Ascend Consultancy AAM team will continue to provide valuable insight to the market. We would be pleased to hear any thoughts, comments or feedback you may have, so do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

ciri and travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

ciri and travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

ciri and travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

ciri and travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

ciri and travel

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
