Travel Management Tools

The University of Northern Iowa has partnered with Direct Travel and Short's Travel Management (STM) to provide UNI travelers with convenient, online booking tools for all your travel arrangement needs. All non-athletic travel will use the Direct Travel Etta booking tool. Athletics travel will continue to use the STM Portal.

Please note the following with the academic travel transition to Direct Travel:

Existing travel profiles, including preferences, unused tickets, etc. will be transferred to Direct Travel No change to existing customer support phone numbers: (877-503-0017) There is a new agent support email address: [email protected] New Direct Travel Itineraries (Direct2U) Travel arrangements for non-UNI guests will need to be booked through a travel agent rather than through the online booking tool or guest travelers can book their own arrangements and seek reimbursement (requires a TEV submission in ProTrav).

There are many great benefits that using the travel management book tools provides to not only the University but also to you as the traveler. Below is a list of some of these benefits:

  • One-stop shop for all travel needs - saves the travel arranger time in processing and booking.
  • Excellent Traveler Support from experts - if travel plans need to change, such as cancelling or postponing a trip, travelers will be much more successful in receiving refunds or exchanges when working with a contracted agent rather than a third-party vendor (such as Expedia) or through the airline website directly.
  • 24/7 Service - agents are on hand at any time of day to handle any sort of travel emergency that may come up, such as an unexpected flight cancellation.
  • Economies of Scale - Direct Travel and STM can use their relationships to negotiate better rates and services for UNI travelers.
  • Ability to record current UNI specific data on travel.
  • Used to negotiate contracts with airlines and hotels to reduce costs
  • Helps determine further contracting needs
  • Real time insights to analyze travel patterns and increase ability to forecast needs
  • Ensures policy compliance - Directd Travel and STM know UNI's travel policy and can ensure bookings are compliant, as well as provide receipt documentation that will pass auditor requirements.

Please keep these benefits in mind when choosing how to book your business-related travel arrangements, and try to use these online booking tools whenever possible.

Travel Insurance

Protect your travel investment by purchasing insurance. Many insurance providers cover unforeseen events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellation, missed flights, flight delays, baggage loss or damage, and/or rental car protection.

Ask one of our agents how you can safeguard your vacation investment. Direct Travel recommends Allianz Global Assistance-click the link below to get started!

Have questions about traveling to another country? Wondering if you need a tourist or business visa?

Liquid Restrictions

You cannot bring any beverages past security checkpoints. Liquids in a carry-on bag must be in 3.4 oz. bottles and placed in a quart-sized plastic bag. You can find these bottles in the travel-size sections of Wal-Mart or Target. If in doubt, put liquids in your checked bag.

Practice 3-1-1! 3.4 oz bottles in a 1-quart size plastic bag 1 bag per person!

Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.

Medications should be taken in your carry on bag. These should be in their original bottles.

It is OK to bring some solid food items (ie: a candy bar, granola bar, piece of fruit) through security, though you may want to check this list  to see if it’s allowed through security and/or in what amounts.

Questions on what you can/can’t bring with you on the plane? Click here .

Identification

Please verify with your travel agent when you book a flight that your name on your ticket matches your identification (passport or driver’s license) exactly. We recommend taking it out of your wallet to check. If your name on your ticket and your name on your ID do not match, the TSA can deny boarding! It would be no fun to go on vacation only to get as far as the airport!

If your child has a driver’s license or a permit we recommend using the name that is printed on it to put on their airline reservation; however, anyone under the age of 18 does not need a photo ID.The airlines will require their full legal name be put on their ticket (first, middle, last) and date of birth.

Buying an airline ticket for a friend, family member or someone in your office? Have them take their ID out of the holder to check how their name appears: is it John Winston Smith or John W. Smith? Are they a ‘Sr.’ or a ‘Jr.’? Once they are ticketed, the airlines may charge a fee to change their name, so you’ll save some money by getting it right the first time!

More information on acceptable forms of ID can be found here .

Any other questions/concerns on security checkpoints or what you can/can’t take on the plane? The TSA website is the best source of information: www.tsa.gov

Checking in for your Flight

Most airlines allow you to check in for your flight 24 hours prior to your departure by going to their website. For example: if your flight leaves at 7:04 AM on March 20, you can check in at the airline’s website for your flight anytime after 7:04 AM on March 19. We highly  recommend doing this, as not only will it save you some time at the airport (you can even prepay your checked baggage on most airlines and print your boarding passes) but it will also lessen your chances of being bumped if a flight is oversold.

We’re happy to help you check in for your flight-if our office is open, simply stop by our office the day before your flight and ask one of our agents to help you with check-in. Having your airline confirmation # is helpful at this time.

If you do not have a computer, we recommend arriving at the airport at least two hours prior to your departure. This will give you time to check in for your flight, check or pay your baggage (the airlines will accept exact change or a credit card at the counter), and get through security.

Changing your Flight

It is possible to change a flight or cancel it all together. If you need to change/cancel your flight, please call our offices. Most airlines charge at least a $150-$200 change fee per ticket to change a domestic flight, and it could be $200 or more for an international ticket. If you know you’re going to miss your flight or need to cancel, please contact our offices before your flight departs! If the wheels leave the ground without you, you will lose the entire value of your ticket.

Both of our offices have 24 hr emergency phone numbers on our after-hours recording. Simply call us and get the number.

WestJet's St. John's-to-London route goes live — sparking anger over affordable air travel within N.L.

1st direct european route since 2019 now flying until october.

direct travel email address

Social Sharing

Newfoundland and Labrador is connected once more to Europe with a direct flight to the United Kingdom this summer, but government subsidies of the St. John's-to-London route has one Labrador MHA demanding closer attention to the high cost of travel within the province.

The newest WestJet route, which flies three times weekly from May until October, will run for the next three years. It's the first time a direct intercontinental route has been offered in Newfoundland since 2019.

"It's a vast geography and it's difficult to get here unless you take an airplane," Alexis von Hoensbroech, WestJet CEO, told reporters Thursday in St. John's.

"So there's obviously demand, and we are happy to support this demand."

WestJet's previous route to London ended because of COVID-19 restrictions. Its return was delayed due to a pilot shortage, but the route had always been in high demand before the pandemic, von Hoensbroech said.

The airline hinted at the possibility of more European routes appearing in the future if this season generates enough business.

"We hope this runs well. And if it runs well, maybe there's room for more," von Hoensbroech said.

Tourism Minister Steve Crocker said the flight to London represents a unique opportunity for U.K. tourists, who can now fly to St. John's for a weekend trip.

He also said the province was looking for more direct routes to Europe — and eyeing Germany in particular, given new business connections in the wind energy industry.

Germany is also the second-largest market for incoming tourists, Crocker said.

Provincial travel a sticking point

But with the province thinking globally, Labrador West MHA Jordan Brown says people in smaller communities would be better served by government attention turned inward.

"We're spending so much emphasis on subsidizing other people's vacations, but here in Labrador we can't get any attention on the constant rising costs of interprovincial travel," Brown said, pointing out that a trip from Labrador West to St. John's can cost over $1,500.

Crocker told reporters Thursday the government is looking at travel inside the province as a separate issue, unrelated to securing leisure routes to the mainland and beyond.

Brown disagreed, arguing the government should implement a task force to introduce more affordable options for intraprovincial travel.

"It is the same issue. It's about travel, it's about connectivity," Brown said. "We can't get an answer from this government on anything interprovincial."

Airplanes parked at an airport.

This year's budget includes $3.75 million earmarked for several airport authorities to use as they see fit.

It's not known how much public money was used to subsidize WestJet's London route; Crocker says that number was part of an agreement between the airline and the St. John's International Airport Authority.

Von Hoensbroech also did not disclose the amount but told reporters such agreements weren't unusual and were supposed to be short-lived.

"When it comes to new routes, it's pretty common across Canada that there's some risk-sharing at the beginning," he said.

"Every route has to be sustainable in its own right, and there shouldn't be routes that receive constant subsidies."

No Halifax route on horizon

WestJet has also recently installed new direct flights between St. John's and Calgary, and Deer Lake and Toronto.

But its old direct route between St. John's and Halifax likely isn't coming back any time soon.

"We did this for quite some years and it did not work out very well because this market … [is] pretty overserved," von Hoensbroech said, adding WestJet's fleet also contains aircraft too large for regional routes.

"Regional flying within eastern Canada is not a strategic priority for us anymore."

  • Why flights between Newfoundland and Europe have Labrador Inuit shaking their heads
  • WestJet linking St. John's to Hamilton, taking over old Swoop route

The CEO said its new strategy appears to be working: its newest flights out of St. John's are doing booming business.

"So far routes to Calgary and Gatwick are selling very well," he said. "Very promising."
