After a decade long absence The Dismemberment Plan have finally dusted off their differences and returned with an awesome comeback. Bigger, better and more passionate than ever. Making indie rock cool before it became uncool to like indie rock because it then became TOO cool, The Dismemberment Plan’s music is still as relevant today as it was in 2003. A far cry from other early 00s bands that dominated the charts with their pop cheese back in the day, The D plan (as their friends call them) are chilled, post- punk, pre- indie musical goodness. Songs such as ‘The ice of Boston’, ‘The city’ and ‘What do you want me to say’ are just a small selection of their brilliant line up. There was honestly not a single song that they failed to rock and that didn’t draw the entire crowd’s attention. The lead singer’s vocals were raw and real: oddly nasal yet with a real rocky edge that suited their music perfectly. The other band members were all brilliant on their various instruments, showcasing their real talent. A welcome relief from much of the manufactured bands we are presented with today. Their banter on stage was as brilliant as their music, making the entire show a real treat to watch.

The Dismemberment Plan is a Washington D.C. based indie rock band formed over twenty years ago on the first of January in 1983. Their music spans many genres including Indie rock, experimental rock, post punk revival, math rock, and post hardcore. Though they are based in the District of Columbia, they mostly perform in Spain and the west coast of the United States of America. Their concerts are beautifully arranged with nice lights that complement the casual clothing they generally wear. Some of their great songs include "Life of Possibilities, Ellen & Ben, If I Don't Write” that they play with deep feelings and emotions.Their concerts are generally well attended and allow for people to have a great time. There are no raving or mosh pits when The Dismemberment Plan but I still was able to feel like I could transcend reality and get to a euphoric high without drugs! The feelings are great and I love how they actually take requests sometime from the audience, so it is not a purely pre-planned performance. This really makes them seem like they want to be great people as well as great artists. It gives their fans a stake in the outcome of the concerts, which are usually amazing.

The Dismemberment Plan

Agent:  Mahmood Shaikh ————

In 2003, if you told the members of The Dismemberment Plan that ten years later, they would not only be releasing a new album, but their best record to date, there’s no way they would have believed you. Since forming in Washington, D.C. in 1993, the band has released four highly acclaimed full-lengths, toured the world many times over, and become one of the most well respected—and indefinable—acts in indie rock. But the past decade has seen their members exploring other areas both inside and outside of music, and even embracing adulthood. However, along the way something funny happened: They reunited three years ago to play some shows to support the reissue of 1999’s Emergency & I and realized their most potent magic had yet to be bottled.

“We never psyched ourselves out and thought, ‘NOW we’re making a Plan record,” explains guitarist Jason Caddell. “It was more like stay calm and play on,” he continues with a laugh. These sessions between the band—which also includes guitarist/vocalist Travis Morrison, bassist Eric Axelson and drummer Joe Easley—resulted in a collection of songs that are inspired because they weren’t burdened by any expectations, allowing them to retain the fire of their nascent recordings while entering a fresh sonic aura. “We weren’t going to get anything good unless we could trick ourselves into staying in that place where it was creativity for its own sake,” Morrison elaborates. “It was a real blessing and opportunity to be in that space again without thinking we had a product to deliver.”

To be fair, The Dismemberment Plan never thought of their music as a commodity, despite the fact that they have been handpicked to tour with Pearl Jam and shared the stage with peers Death Cab For Cutie on the co-headlining Death And Dismemberment Tour, among other career milestones. “Our goals have always been more abstract than sales and statistics,” Caddell explains. That statement is confirmed by the fact that in the years since their hiatus the members have gone on to thrive in their respective creative and intellectual fields while still keeping music an active presence in their lives.

Case in point, Axelson has been teaching in public schools and playing in various bands, including Maritime; Morrison worked for The Huffington Post and The Washington Post, and now is the president of his own start-up in addition to singing in church choirs; Caddell has been a freelance audio engineer for corporate and political events ranging from presidential elections to the G8 Summit at Camp David, all the while playing on and producing records for his friends and bandmates; and Easley received a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and now works at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on a robotic satellite servicing program in addition to playing with Axelson in Statehood.

Uncanney Valley was recorded by longtime collaborator J. Robbins (Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring) at his Baltimore Studio, Magpie Cage, and mixed by Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead), and the result is an album that maintains The Dismemberment Plan’s unique sound while simultaneously allowing them to open up and expand on the foundation of their celebrated back catalog. Produced by Jason Caddell and The Dismemberment Plan, this is the first time in the band’s history that they didn’t use an outside producer. “When I listen to this record it’s hard for me to believe we’re a bunch of 40 year olds now,” Morrison admits. “It sounds like the musical heat is stronger than ever.”

This love of music is as evident in the buoyant groove of the Jackson Browne- inspired “Daddy Was A Real Good Dancer” as it is on the sweetly syncopated, electronically augmented rocker “Mexico City Christmas.” “Generally we have deeply broad taste in a lot of different types of music, and it’s not a fashion statement. It’s a genuine heartfelt appreciation, and I think you can hear that in our music,” Caddell responds when asked about the colorful sonic palette illustrated on the album. Whether Morrison is flexing his R&B chops on the quirky, catchy “Waiting” or approaching the concept of a love song in a new and effective context on the quasi-ballad “Lookin,” Uncanney Valley has moments certain to captivate both new listeners and longtime fans of the band.

The Dismemberment Plan’s personal growth is mirrored in Morrison’s lyrics, which center on his move to Brooklyn. “I wrote the kind of lyric stories I wanted to hear that I just wasn’t getting from other artists,” he explains. And even when he’s exploring isolation on the synth-driven “Invisible,” the songs retain a level of honesty that’s impossible to fake.

This spirit of collaboration paired with the members’ diverse taste and life experiences are what make Uncanney Valley such an enthralling listen—and although the group remains unsure what the future holds for them, the most important thing right now is that they exist here in the moment. “We’re very much taking things one step at a time, but I will say that at this juncture the excitement level is high. So, whatever comes next comes next,” Caddell summarizes.

Ultimately, whether the members are controlling robots on a space station or performing live with an enthusiasm that transcends age, The Dismemberment Plan are a special band, and Uncanney Valley solidifies that as times change and tides shift, this will always hold true.

The Dismemberment Plan is an indie rock/post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C., United States on January 1, 1993. Also known as “The D-Plan” or “The Plan,” the band’s name comes from a stray phrase uttered by the insurance salesman in the popular comedy Groundhog Day. The band members include Eric Axelson (bass), Jason Caddell (guitar), Joe Easley (drums) and Travis Morrison (vocals and guitar). Axelson, Caddell, Morrison and original drummer Steve Cummings formed the band after attending Lake Braddock Secondary School together in Burke, Virginia. Cummings left the band after the recording of the Plan’s debut album ! and was replaced by Easley starting on their second LP, The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified.

Aside from a brief interlude in 1998 and 1999 when they were signed by major label Interscope Records, the band recorded for local label DeSoto Records. Their third record and breakthrough album, Emergency & I, was actually created during their time at Interscope; however, they were dropped from the label shortly after its completion, and thus took it back with them to DeSoto, where it wound up being released. The Ice of Boston EP is the only item of theirs Interscope actually released during their tenure there.

Following the massive underground success of Emergency & I, the band received an even higher profile after being invited to open for the European leg of Pearl Jam’s 2000 tour. The band recorded and released a follow-up to Emergency & I, Change, in 2001 using the severance money they received from Interscope, and a subsequent co-headlining tour in 2002 with Death Cab for Cutie (cheekily called the “Death and Dismemberment Tour”) also worked well to raise both bands’ profiles and cross-pollinate their fanbases, as well as forge creative ties between several members.

Later that summer and fall, the Dismemberment Plan started to debut songs for their follow-up to Change. In 2002, the band put all the music tracks from their last two albums on their website, encouraging fans to remix the songs. The result was 2003’s A People’s History of the Dismemberment Plan. On January 19, 2003, however, the band announced on their website that they had decided to break up after a few tours that year. A final show was planned for July 28, 2003 in Washington D.C.’s famous outdoor show space, Fort Reno Park. However, come show-time, a heavy rain had driven off all but the most devoted fans, leading the band to add one more final show.

On September 1, 2003, the band closed out the first part of their career with a sold-out show at the renowned 9:30 Club. Following the split, Travis Morrison took the post-Change songs with him for further work, and released many of them on his first album, Travistan, in 2004. Jason Caddell worked with Morrison on Morrison’s second album, All Y’all, which was released under the name Travis Morrison Hellfighters. Eric Axelson started a band called Maritime with former members of The Promise Ring; they released an album, Glass Floor, in 2004. Axelson subsequently left Maritime and joined the band Statehood in mid-2006 with Joe Easley until the tragic death of Clark Sabine in June 2009. The Dismemberment Plan itself even reunited for two shows to benefit Cal Robbins at the Black Cat in Washington, D.C. on April 29 and April 30, 2007. A full reunion still seemed unlikely, though, and on July 2, 2009, Travis Morrison announced his retirement from music, stating that there would be no more shows or bands.

In late 2010, however, the Dismemberment Plan announced that they would reunite for a full-scale tour in 2011 coinciding with Barsuk’s vinyl reissue of Emergency & I. At the time, the band denied that they were planning a new record, but implied that one could be possible. By the time the tour was finished, the band played on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, as well as three performances in Washington, D.C., the Pitchfork Music Festival, Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic, and ten other dates.

The band reconvened once again in 2012 and played several small-venue shows in Baltimore, Maryland and Fredericksburg, Virginia, where they debuted eight new songs; a month later, Travis Morrison confirmed that they were working on a new record. On June 26, 2013, the band officially announced their fifth studio album (and first new record in 12 years), entitled Uncanney Valley. It was released via Partisan Records on October 15, 2013. The Dismemberment Plan Cover Circus Lupus for First New Recording in a Decade: Stream

Thanks to a new covers compilation from the DC label For Love of Records, The Dismemberment Plan have shared their first new recording in over a decade: a cover of Circus Lupus’ 1992 song, “Unrequited.”

Matching the arrangement of the original recording, The Dismemberment Plan’s take on “Unrequited” has the advantage of modern mixing on its side, and hits with a harder oomph on the low-end. On the choruses, the driving crash cymbal and arpeggiated bassline lift the energy, while the guitar solo leading into the outro conveys the raw, beefy power of the track, overall aptly honoring Circus Lupus’ original.

As the band explained on Instagram , the cover was recorded in August 2023 in Richmond, Virginia. Its arrival marks the first time they have played together in nine years. Listen to it below.

Titled Yesterday & Today: DC Does Dischord , the For Love of Records compilation arrived on January 31st, 2024, and features 27 DC artists paying homage to the influential label. Joining The Dismemberment Plan on the tracklist are Ted Leo covering Shudder to Think, The Pietasters covering Minor Threat, J. Robbins covering his former band Government Issue, and over 20 others.

A portion of the proceeds from Yesterday & Today: DC Does Dischord will go towards We Are Family DC, an organization which supports disadvantaged elderly in DC. Stream the album and order physical copies via Bandcamp .

The Dismemberment Plan’s latest release prior to this was their 2013 album, Uncanney Valley . Their sophomore album, The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified , was named by Consequence as the 35th best album of 1997 .
