"They've never lived the Derby before, so to give them that and to kind of show them every aspect: Grandstand, Track, and all of that, really makes me feel like I'm at home,” Ferguson said.

"People love the idea or people, you know, are like, 'How long have the grandstands been there?' And you know the spires have been there since 1895,” he said from the backside railing as those twin spires loomed over the track.

"If you really close your eyes, you can sense just the feeling of the horses going by,” he continued.

From inside the Grandstand, it’s a completely different view, and a completely different culture when it comes to a race day.

“I see the color of the hats,” Ferguson said. “The sea of hats and the sea of suits. I love wearing suits, so a go-to for me is the fashion. Other than that, I can just smell the bourbon in the air, the cigars, the feeling."

That feeling is infectious and it’s something that Ferguson looks forward to sharing with guests every day of the year.

"You know when you look at history and you look at the Derby overall, it's something that it's just unfathomably beautiful,” Ferguson said.

The Kentucky Derby will begin its 150th annual iteration of the race this weekend at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

This year, 20 horses will participate in the race. American horses Fierceness and Sierra Leone are the favorites according to morning-line odds.

Fierceness most recently won the 2024 Florida Derby at the end of March. Sierra Leone won the 2024 Blue Grass Stakes earlier this month.

The longevity and consistency of the first race in the horse racing Triple Crown is remarkable. There has never been a year without the Kentucky Derby since its first running in 1875, even through both World Wars and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

2024 Kentucky Derby prize money

The total purse for the Kentucky Derby is up to $5 million for the 2024 race , representing a $2 million raise from the 2023 purse.

The winner will take home $3.1 million, up from $1.86 million in 2023. Second place will earn $1 million, third will earn $500,000, fourth will earn $250,000 and fifth will earn $150,000.

Everything you need to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby post positions

Post positions for the 15oth Kentucky Derby (G1) were drawn on Saturday evening, kicking off the annual debate among bettors as to which horses drew well, which drew poorly, and which might enjoy favorable trips in the 2024 “Run for the Roses.”

Some conclusions will be anecdotal, based on gut feelings and the relative draws of well-regarded horses. Other takeaways will be based on cold, hard data—specifically, the post position statistics meticulously compiled by Churchill Downs since the starting gate was first introduced for the 1930 Kentucky Derby .

How many winners have broken from post 1? What’s the win percentage of post 15? What percent of horses finish in the money (first, second, or third) when breaking from post 5? Who was the last horse to win from post 14? How about the last horse to finish in the money from post 17?

A total of 22 horses have entered the 2024 Kentucky Derby. In addition to the 20 horses listed in the table above, Epic Ride (#21) and Mugatu (#22) are on the also-eligible list.

In the event one or more horses scratch from the main body of the field, all horses drawn outside of the scratched horse(s) will move inward, and Epic Ride and/or Mugatu will draw into the field and start from the outside post(s). In 2022, #21 Rich Strike drew in off the also-eligible list and started from post 20. Capitalizing on a fast pace, he rallied to victory at odds of 80-1, joining Big Brown (2008) as one of two Kentucky Derby winners to break from post 20.

After analyzing the data in the post positions chart, here are a few key takeaways:

• Post 1 is widely considered a disadvantage since it’s difficult for horses to work out a clean trip while breaking from the inside of a 20-horse field. But while post 1 hasn’t produced a Derby winner since Ferdinand in 1986, post 2, post 9, post 12, post 14, and post 17 have endured even longer streaks of frustration. Post 14 hasn’t produced a Derby winner since Carry Back in 1961 , and horses breaking from post 17 have gone 0-for-44. That's right—post 17 has yet to produce a Kentucky Derby winner.

• Not every Kentucky Derby features a full field, so inside posts are more likely to compile high win percentages than outside posts. In a 10-horse field, each post has a 10% chance at producing the winner. In a 20-horse field, each post has a 5% chance.

• Keeping that in mind, it’s notable how many Kentucky Derby winners have broken from outside posts in recent years. Eight of the last 13 winners (62%) started from post 13 or wider, suggesting unencumbered trips are more important than saving ground in the Kentucky Derby.

• But based on a strict reading of the statistics, post 5 ranks among the best positions a horse can hope to draw. Not only has post 5 produced the most winners (10), the most runners-up (eight, tied with posts 3 and 6), and the second-highest win percentage (10.6%), it also produced a top-five finisher in every Kentucky Derby from 2012 through 2019. This impressive streak included the victorious duo of California Chrome (2014) and Always Dreaming (2017).

• Post 15 has been particularly advantageous in the last dozen years, producing Kentucky Derby winners Orb (2013), American Pharoah (2015), and Authentic (2020). Post 7 has also fared well, churning out Justify (2018) and Mandaloun (2021), while post 8 has yielded Mine That Bird (2009) and Mage (2023) in the last 15 years.

Will Fierceness become the first Kentucky Derby winner to break from post 17? Will Catalytic add to the decorated resume of post 5?

Will Dornoch overcome the rail draw? Will Sierra Leone, Encino, Track Phantom, or Endlessly reverse the long losing streaks for their respective post positions?

Sports | 12 horse deaths last year at Churchill Downs brought change to Kentucky Derby

The historic track has significantly upgraded its safety program ahead of saturday’s 150th run for the roses.

Memories are made at the Kentucky Derby, most of them good. Whether cashing a winning ticket, sipping mint juleps or marveling at the horses, crowds pack Churchill Downs to experience a bucket list sporting event.

Many left last year in tears, anger and questioning the safety of the sport after 12 horses died at the historic track in the days surrounding the race, including two on Derby day when racing enjoys its biggest attendance and highest TV ratings of the year.

“You can’t ever be too safe when it comes to our sport,” two-time Derby-winning jockey Mike Smith said.

Deaths occurred at other major racing venues last year, too, in what become a tragic theme for the sport.

The number of deaths in the United States increased slightly in 2023 from the year before, according to data tracked by the Equine Injury Database and reported by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.

HISA, the sport’s new governing body, said there were 1.32 deaths per 1,000 starts last year, up from 1.25 the previous year. The number at the 50 HISA-accredited tracks was 1.23 per 1,000, compared with 1.63 at others across the country.

“We’re encouraged by that progress,” said Lisa Lazarus, CEO of HISA, “but we certainly have a whole lot more work to do.”

A review of 14 horse deaths at Saratoga in upstate New York last summer found no definitive cause for why they happened, although heavy rainfall could have contributed.

Investigations by Churchill Downs and HISA didn’t identify one common cause for the deaths around the Derby.

“When we say that there’s not one singular factor that caused the breakdowns, it doesn’t mean that we don’t know what the risk factors are that contribute to breakdowns,” Lazarus said. “Those are things we’ve been working on very hard.”

The deaths prompted Churchill Downs to make several changes to its safety program ahead of the 150th Derby on Saturday.

The track upgraded equipment used to harrow and grade the dirt surface, with increased testing to measure safety and consistency. The cushion is measured in spots around the track and moisture content is checked throughout racing days to decide the watering schedule.

“The track is a lot different than it was. It’s got more sand in it now, it’s got more base, more cushion,” said 88-year-old Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who saddles Just Steel in the Derby. “It’s quite a bit deeper. Horses are getting over it good.”

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who has Resilience in the Derby, likes Churchill’s dirt strip when it’s dry. There is a 40% chance of rain on Derby day.

“I don’t like it as much when it’s wet,” he said. “It does not handle water as well as it used to, probably because of a lack of sand in it. Hopefully, we get good normal conditions and I think we’re looking at a good race track.”

The New York Racing Association – which runs the Belmont Stakes, racing’s third leg of the Triple Crown – is studying the feasibility of adopting all-weather surfaces at tracks nationwide.

Churchill Downs added an equine safety and integrity veterinarian to help enforce its rules. Fifteen vets from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission joined the track’s vet team to observe horses this week before, during and after training and in their stalls after they arrive.

A new safety management committee, composed of trainers, exercise riders, jockeys, track management and vets, meets weekly to discuss concerns and provide feedback on areas for improvement.

All horses racing at Churchill Downs wear StrideSAFE biometric sensors that detect changes in their gaits to help spot inconsistencies or early signs of a potential developing injury. The track installed a PET unit for diagnostic imaging, only the second such machine permanently located at a U.S. racetrack.

Realizing the effect last year’s deaths had on the public, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association has launched a national advertising campaign called “Safety Runs First” to explain what the industry is doing to improve equine safety.

NTRA president and CEO Tom Rooney points to HISA, as well as investments in new diagnostic technologies, advanced data analytics and veterinary and track surface protocols, as “a testament to our collective dedication to enhancing safety practices within the industry.”

HISA took effect in July 2022 to implement national standards for safety at racetracks, replacing the patchwork rules of the 38 racing states. Its antidoping and medication control program didn’t start until late May 2023, after last year’s Derby and Preakness, where one of trainer Bob Baffert’s horses was injured in a race and was euthanized.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was suspended and had his Derby horse scratched ahead of last year’s race after the sudden deaths of two of his horses at Churchill Downs. He was reinstated when an investigation showed no wrongdoing on his part.

“It proved that we handled things correctly,” he said. “Why did it happen? We don’t know. We didn’t have answers. It knocks you down and it’s something you carry the rest of your life. We’re thankful to be back.”

Joseph will saddle long shot Catalytic on Saturday.

HISA has been dogged by legal challenges from groups of horsemen opposing the new rules and frustration from those eager for national uniform rules in the sport. Still, many see progress being made, even as it’s come in fits and starts.

“It’s been a little bit sloppy and all over the place,” two-time Derby-winning trainer Doug O’Neill said, “but I do think the sport has evolved into a safer sport.”

Smith, who isn’t participating Saturday but has ridden in a record 28 Derbies, has adjusted to the additional scrutiny.

“It’s a wonderful, beautiful, beautiful game, but it can also be very dangerous,” he said. “We certainly need all these protocols.”

Tickets are non-refundable and all tickets are accessed digitally. During live race dates, the Clubhouse Box Office will open one hour prior to gates and close at the second to last race for that day. After the Box Office has closed, only customers with pre-purchased tickets and gate passes may enter the facility for the last race of the day. To purchase tickets on a non-race date:

Finding Help

Our Guest Services reps and gate staff will be wearing red shirts and/or coats. In addition to them, you will see ushers wearing bright yellow shirts windbreakers as well as a variety of uniformed security personnel. If you see something, say something. Safety and security of all of our guests is taken very seriously. Your bag may be searched, and you may be wanded by security upon entry. For a complete list of prohibited items, click here .

While there won’t be 150,000 people at the track like there is on Derby, large crowds are often present at large stakes race days and featured event days.

While there typically isn’t the need to dress up like Derby, there are some instances and areas that have dress codes or where themed attire is encouraged. Downs After Dark for example are night time races with themed events and encouraged. In some locations, like membership clubs and suites, there are certain levels of dress required. Follow this helpful information and check the seating areas pages you are attending for specific Do’s and Don’ts .

Track Casual

Applicable Areas: Aristides Lounge, Champions Bar & Balcony, First Turn Club Dining, Gold Room, Homestretch Club, Loft at Aristides Lounge, Millionaires Row, Skye Terrace, Stakes Room & Balcony, Winner’s Circle Suites

Do's: Jackets and blazers optional. Vests, shirts with collars, sweaters, dresses, pantsuits, dress jeans, dress shorts and slacks are appropriate, as are golf shorts and capris.

Don'ts: Worn or torn garments, crop or midriff tops, athletic wear, swim wear, frayed or torn denim, and flip-flops are considered inappropriate attire.

Smart Casual

Applicable Areas: Derby Room, Grand Foyer, Jockey Club Suites, Matt Winn’s Steakhouse, Oaks Room, Roses Lounge, SAP Starting Gate Suites, Triple Crown Room & Balcony, Turf Club Boxes, Club SI

Do's: Jackets and blazers optional. Vests, shirts with collars, sweaters, dresses, pantsuits, dress jeans, dress shorts and slacks are appropriate.

Don'ts: Cargo shorts, t-shirts, crop or midriff tops, athletic wear, swim wear, frayed or torn denim or shorts, and tennis shoes are considered inappropriate attire.

*Dress Code for Roses Lounge is Smart Casual, except for Derby Week, Mother's Day, Preakness, Belmont, Thanksgiving and the Clark Handicap when this room is considered to be Turf Club Roses Lounge. On these days the dress code is Business Casual.

Business Casual

Applicable Areas: Directors Room, Finish Line Suites & Balcony, Spires Terrace & Suites, Trophy Room, Turf Club Roses Lounge, Turf Club Terrace & Balcony, Woodford Reserve Paddock Club

Do's: Jackets and blazers, vests, shirts with collars, sweaters, dresses, pantsuits, slacks and capri pants are appropriate.

Don'ts: Jeans/denim, shorts, t-shirts, crop or midriff tops, athletic wear, swim wear, and flip-flops are all considered inappropriate attire & are not permitted in these areas.

Races are a rain or shine event be prepared as a large number of seatings are outdoors and uncovered. In only extreme weather situations will racing be delayed or suspended.

Persons with Disabilities

We will do our absolute best to accommodate persons with disabilities. We are unable to provide wheelchairs for rent or storage. Parking for persons with disabilities is available within designated parking areas and can be reviewed by clicking here>

ACCESSIBLE SEATING ROUTES

Nursing mothers.

Nursing Mothers may enter Churchill Downs with breast pumps supplies at any gate. All bags will require additional screening upon entry and will be tagged as a medical bag.

• Second floor of the Grandstand next to double doors leading to section 320
• Near the ladies restroom, close to the Clubhouse elevators on the second floor of the Clubhouse
• In the Clubhouse corridor next to First Aid
• In the Infield inside of the Norton First Aid trailer by the Infield tunnel, on Oaks and Derby days only

Smoking Policy

No smoking indoors. No smoking at any outdoor location where food is served, and no smoking in the Spires Terrace due to the historical nature of the building.

Cellular & Wi-Fi Service

There is public Wi-Fi available on race days.

Parking and Access to the Track

Currently, guests are encouraged to park in Yellow and Turquoises lots & enter through the Clubhouse or VIP gate for the following areas: General Admission, Clubhouse 100 or 300 level boxes, Stakes Room, Skye Terrace, Roses Lounge, Trophy Room, Finish Line Suites, Millionaires Row, Matt Winn’s Steakhouse. You are able to access the Yellow and Turquoises lots via Longfield Avenue.

If you are having an event or seated in the Starting Gate Suites or Homestretch Club, park in the Black or Green lots and enter through the Executive gate which can be accessed via Central Avenue.

Concessions

Beat the lines by having your credit or debit cards ready as a number of our concession stand have moved to cashless sales.

Cash is still needed for placing wagers at mutuel windows. While there are plenty of ATMs on site, it is encouraged you bring cash if you are looking to wager on site. Or set up your betting account through the TwinSpires app.

Wagering Rules

Churchill Downs Racetrack is regulated by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) and as such complies with the pari-mutuel wagering rules set forth in state statutes and by the KHRC. Please see our full list of rules for more information.

UNCASHED TICKETS

Did you cash all of your wagers from Derby? If you were unable to on Derby Day or recently found an uncashed ticket check out these helpful tips.

Mailing in Mutuel Tickets

Please make a copy of the ticket for your records and mail the original along with your name, address, city, state, zip and phone number to:

Churchill Downs, Inc. Attn: Treasurer 700 Central Avenue Louisville, KY 40208-1212

We also suggest you send it registered or certified mail. It will take approximately 8 weeks before you receive a check or your ticket back if it was not a winner.

The Internal Revenue Service requires reporting of payouts on wagers that exceed odds of more than 300 to 1 and pay in excess of $600. IRS regulations also require automatic withholding on IRS payouts that exceed $5,000. There is no withholding on payouts of less than $5,000. If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

CDI Policy regarding cashing of reportable wagers

The IRS requires the purchaser of reportable wagers to provide Churchill Downs with the following information that is necessary to complete official tax documents:

Government-issued photo ID Proof of current address Social Security number Purchaser’s signature attesting to ownership of the ticket

Churchill Downs will ONLY pay reportable winnings to ticket purchasers who supply this required information. Churchill Downs will not pay reportable winnings to any individual without proper documentation nor to any individual other than the initial purchaser of the ticket.

In the instance of patron disputes involving reportable winnings, Churchill Downs reserves the right to decide the issuance of tax forms in compliance with federal rules.

IT IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL CRIMINAL LAW TO CASH SOMEONE’S TICKET TO ASSIST THAT PERSON IN AVOIDING INCOME TAXES. BOTH THE OWNER OF THE TICKET AND THE PERSON CASHING THE TICKET WILL BE GUILTY OF TAX EVASION.

Individuals under the age of 18 may not purchase, cancel or cash any pari-mutuel tickets or voucher at any manned or self-serviced machine.

For security and crowd control reasons, re-entry is not permitted at the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. This means that you will not be able to go outside the gates to retrieve items from your car once you have passed through security. Please be sure to bring everything you need and pay special attention to our list of prohibited items when you enter the track.

2024 Kentucky Derby expert picks, post positions, odds, time: Insider fades Fierceness at Churchill Downs

History is working for and against 2024 Kentucky Derby favorite Fierceness. Fierceness won the Florida Derby, a race that has been one of the best predictors for who wins the "Run for the Roses." Twenty-five Kentucky Derby winners have run in the Florida Derby and six Florida Derby winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby. Mage, last year's Kentucky Derby winner, finished second in the Florida Derby. On the other hand, Fierceness will run from post No. 16, which has only produced four winners in the Kentucky Derby, after Encino was scratched on Tuesday. Fierceness is the 5-2 favorite in the 2024 Kentucky Derby odds, but which trend should you lean more on in your 2024 Kentucky Derby bets?

Post time for the first leg of the Triple Crown is set for 6:57 p.m. ET. With the Kentucky Derby offering arguably the best betting opportunity of any single sporting event of the year, you'll want to  see what Saratoga Springs-based racing insider and Beyer Speed Figure maker Bob Weir has to say before making any 2024 Kentucky Derby picks .

A member of the Beyer Speed Figure-making team since 2017, Weir is a two-time qualifier for the prestigious National Horseplayers Championship in Las Vegas. He has produced multiple five-figure days at the track over the years, including a $60,000 Pick 6 at Del Mar in 2014 and an $18,000 Pick 5 at Tampa Bay Downs in early April.

In April of last year, he hit a Pick 4 at Gulfstream Park for $641, the exacta in the Florida Derby, a Pick 5 at Keeneland and the exacta in the Lexington Stakes. He smashed the trifecta in the Belmont Stakes for $532.96, and later in June he crushed a Pick 4 at Belmont for $555. Those were just some of his scores from 2023.

Top 2024 Kentucky Derby predictions

One surprise: Weir is fading Fierceness, even though he is the top favorite. The favorite in the final Kentucky Derby odds has come up short in each of the last five years, and the favorite's lack of success extends well beyond that time span. Since 1980, the favored horse has won just 10 times across the 44 Kentucky Derbies, or just 22.7%.

Additionally, Fierceness has won just two of his four Graded Stakes races, finishing in third place and seventh place in the others. He also doesn't have the top lineage since sire, City of Lights, was never even considered for a Triple Crown race as a 3-year-old in 2017 and never won a race longer than 1 1/8 miles. Finally, his ownership group of Repole Stable is 0-for-8 at the Derby, never finishing better than fifth place with any previous starter.

Another curveball: Weir is high on the chances of Japanese invader Forever Young, even though he's a 10-1 longshot. Forever Young is undefeated in five career starts, including a pair of graded-stakes races. He won the UAE Derby in March and Saudi Derby in February.

No horse from Japan has ever won the Kentucky Derby. However, Weir notes that Forever Young's speed numbers stack up well against the American-based 2024 Kentucky Derby horses, giving him a shot to pull off the historic feat. "There is no reason to believe a horse coming from Dubai can't win this race, and he may be the best UAE Derby shipper to attempt this," Weir told SportsLine.  You can see all of Weir's 2024 Kentucky Derby bets here .
