When to go, how to save on Boston's must-do sightseeing tour

More often than not, when family or out-of-town guests visit Boston , they all have the same to-do item on their list: a Duck Tour. And the request ranges across all ages – Baby Boomer relatives, friends who are busy executives, artsy friends, friends who are parents to kids of all ages. While this is an activity that many locals don't even experience until they have a friend or relative visiting from out of town, it's one you won't want to miss as a tourist.

Duck Tours are a unique experience that combines sightseeing and history while also getting to go out on the Charles River in the vehicle you just drove around the city in. If you want to see Boston via a Duck Boat , late-spring through early-fall is the perfect time to do so. They run from late March through late November, though peak season for all things related to tourism in the city is certainly during the summer months when the weather is nice and warm. Before you book your spot, follow these tips for making the most of your Boston Duck Tour.

Where to Pick Up

You've no doubt seen the Duck Boats' ubiquitous amphibious vehicles all around Boston, but there are only three places where you can pick them up for a tour: the Museum of Science , the New England Aquarium , and the Prudential Center . Choose the one that's most convenient for your own home base and/or sightseeing itinerary; all are near major tourist attractions, MBTA stations and dining.

How to Save

Are your fellow Duck Boat riders a bunch of early risers? If so, make an online reservation for the 9 or 9:30 a.m. tours from either the Museum of Science or Prudential stops and get an Early Duck discount. (Remember that online-only stipulation: If you show up in person to buy tickets for the early tours, you won't get the discount.) It's also worth noting that only a portion of tickets are released online, so it's still worth checking one of the ticket booths if tickets for the date you want to go are sold out online.

There's also the Ride & Save program for those also planning to visit the Museum of Science and New England Aquarium: Show your Duck Boats ticket and get discounts off the museums' admission, café, gift shop, and theaters. You can also get a free tour of Harvard Square with your Duck Boats ticket, plus numerous discounts at the Prudential Center and other Boston restaurants and gift shops. So save that ticket stub and put it to work – you can save quite a lot!

How to Dress

Duck Boats tour in rain or shine, and they do drive in to the river (although, truth be told, the splash is pretty minimal). Wear layers – it can be breezy out on the water, and if it's rainy, a light raincoat is always a good idea. The Duck Boats are heated and have weather protection, but it's not quite like being enclosed within a typical car or truck, so plan accordingly.

What You'll See

Once on board, the tour is about 80 minutes and guests stay on board the entire duration. Approximately 20 minutes of that is spent on the water, with an hour on land taking in many of Boston's historic landmarks and neighborhoods. What you see will depend on where you pick up your Duck Boat, but popular sites include the Boston Public Garden , Boston Common , Boston Public Library, Newbury Street, Quincy Market and the TD Garden . It's destinations like these that make Boston the great city it is.

This was our second trip on the Ducks. It is both entertaining and educational. I have never done anything in Chattanooga that I enjoyed more. A must for out of town guests. We plan to take some more friends in a few weeks! Captain Barry is fantastic!

We were aboard the General Bradley with our captain, a native Chattanoogan who has a vast knowledge of the local history, the city, the river, and the craft. Very informative. He let the kids drive while on the water. Gave some info about local eateries and places to visit. I highly recommend this tour.

While we were not quite sure what to expect, we had a blast both on land and in the water on our tour. Our guide and driver was knowledgeable and entertaining, which made the whole experience a pleasure. Highly recommend!

This is a GREAT historical tour wrapped up with some humor and just plain fun. If you are an adventurous young person, you just may be able to be "captain for a day". This is a great way to round out your sightseeing in Chattanooga, with a cruise on the Tennessee River on a DUCK.

We were a very small tour, but had so much fun. Our guide was super informative and we learned all about the history of the area and the Tennessee River. The tour was on time and definitely worth the money. We would do it again.

He also had a wealth of information about all the things to do and see in the city during our trip!

• We recommend arriving early (before 10:30 am) or late (after 3:00 pm) for best parking availability.
• The Museum is located near the heart of Boston, and city traffic can cause backup as cars exit the garage. We appreciate your patience.
• Bring your ticket with you for payment at automated kiosks (debit and credit card only) inside.

The Museum of Science garage now houses Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations capable of charging up to four cars simultaneously. The stations are located on the fourth floor of the garage—just follow directional signs to the designated charging area.

While there is no cost to charge your car, you will need a ChargePoint account to access. However, a fee of $5.00 per hour will be charged beginning 30 minutes after your car is fully charged if it is not moved. In addition, regular garage fees apply for parking. Blue Bikes Share Program

Getting to and from the Museum — and the rest of the city — just got easier, and more fun! Blue Bikes, metro Boston’s bicycle-sharing system, is now available on the front plaza of the Museum near the front entrance.

Taking Public Transportation

Science Park station is located on the E Branch of the Green Line. After exiting the station, the Museum will be diagonally across the street (O'Brien Highway), just over the Charles River Dam draw bridge.

To transfer to the Green Line from other lines

If you are transferring to the Green Line from other lines, take:

• The Red Line to Park Street
• The Blue Line to State Street (switch to Orange Line )
• The Orange Line to Haymarket or North Station

To walk from other lines

If you plan to walk to the Museum of Science from other lines, take:

• The Green Line or Orange Line to North Station. Then, follow Nashua Street to O'Brien Highway and turn right toward the Museum.
• The Red Line to Charles/MGH Station. Then, cross Storrow Drive toward the Charles River and turn right, walking with the river to your left. Turn left at the Charles River Dam and State Police Station onto O'Brien Highway. The Museum is on your left.
• The Orange Line to Bunker Hill Community College Station. Then, walk over the Gilmore Bridge. At the next traffic light (O'Brien Highway) turn left and cross the street to the Museum.

MBTA Commuter Rail, Amtrak, and Logan Airport information

• The MBTA Commuter Rail train from the north makes its final stop at North Station (Green Line and Orange Line).
• The Amtrak Train from the south stops at Back Bay Station (Orange Line) and South Station (Red Line).
• Logan Airport has a Blue Line stop called Airport Station. Shuttle buses run from the airport terminals to the station. The Silver Line also connects airport terminals to South Station (Red Line).

The Ducks have been one of Wisconsin Dells’ most popular Wisconsin Dells attraction for 70+ years , and they provide a sightseeing experience unlike any other. Discover sandstone rock formations that are over 14,000 years old such as Grotto Island, the Twin Ink Stands, Sugar Bowl, and Lone Rock. Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south. 

Bridges in Moscow

• Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.

• Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
• Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
• Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
• The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
• Novodevichy Convent
• The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
• St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
• St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
