The Rise of Halal Tourism

Muslims now make up one of the fastest-growing segments of the global travel industry. In response, hotels and tour operators are increasingly trying to meet their dietary and religious needs.

For one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global travel industry, there is no pork on the hotel dinner menus. There are flights with no alcohol on the drink carts, resorts with separate swimming pools for men and women, and daily itineraries with built-in break times for the five daily calls to prayer.

Since 2016, the number of Muslim travelers has grown nearly 30 percent, and a recent joint study by Mastercard and Crescent Rating , a research group that tracks halal-friendly travel, projects that over the next decade that sector’s contribution to the global economy will jump to $300 billion from $180 billion. With a population that is disproportionately young, educated and upwardly mobile, they are one of the fastest-growing demographics on the global tourism scene.

But this wasn’t always the case.

In 2015 , Soumaya Hamdi went roadtripping through Asia with her husband and her then 4-month-old baby. The trio visited Singapore and Malaysia, and then caught a flight to South Korea and on to Japan. The trip was thrilling, but Ms. Hamdi and her husband, who are both observant Muslims, found the daily search for halal-certified food a difficult one.

Ms. Hamdi, who is based in London, began blogging about the best Muslim-friendly restaurants she found, as well as prayer facilities and sites that were particularly welcoming for a family with a young baby. Those musings turned into Halal Travel Guide , an online platform offering tips, recommendations and curated itineraries for Muslim travelers.

Her timing was right.

“In Europe the Muslim community is now in its third or fourth generation. They are educated and have good paying jobs,” said Ufuk Secgin, chief marketing officer for Halal Booking , a Muslim-focused vacation search engine. “For the first generation, their idea of a holiday was visiting the family in the home country. This has changed.”

At ITB Asia this October, a leading travel show held in Singapore, organizers partnered with two halal travel authorities, Crescent Rating and Halal Trip , to offer specialized panel discussions and showcases targeting the estimated 156 million Muslims who will book travel between now and 2020.

At the heart of much of the discussion was matters of the belly. For Muslim travelers, “the number one factor is good quality halal food,” Ms. Hamdi said in an email exchange. “I’m not talking about curry or biryani — I’m talking about authentic local food that is halal. After that, it’s usually prayer facilities.”

Tourists’ global demand for halal food has grown so much, in fact, that Have Halal Will Travel , a Singapore-based online community for Muslim travelers, has also partnered with ITB Asia with a three-hour conference and special booth space focusing on foodie-centric outreach to the Muslim tourism sector.

Like Halal Travel Guide , Have Halal Will Travel was founded in 2015. Today, their content reaches 9.1 million users each month, according to their founder, Mikhael Goh. Mr. Goh dreamed up the site with three friends while studying abroad in Seoul; he found himself frustrated on a daily basis with a lack of information about where to find quality halal food.

“We were thinking, why is it in 2015, when there is Yelp and TripAdvisor and so many popular apps and services to tell you where to eat and where to travel, why on earth is there so little information for Muslims?” Mr. Goh said in a phone interview. “Not just about food — yes, halal food is the basis of a lot of things, but also about safety and prayer. There was a general lack of information out there and the information that did exist was so fragmented.”

Only a handful of years later, that gap in the market is now teeming with niche sites, many of them written specifically for young Muslim women. At Passport and Plates , the Los Angeles-based blogger Sally Elbassir chronicles her global foodie adventures where pork and alcohol are always off the menu; at Arabian Wanderess , Esra Alhamal writes about traveling as a female, Muslim millennial on a budget; and at the popular Muslim Travel Girl , run by the Bulgaria-born, Britain-based Elena Nikolova, readers can learn about Muslim-friendly honeymoon resorts with private pools and get tips for a D.I.Y. Umrah (Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca).

Many of the bloggers interviewed for this article echoed the same sentiment: Their goal is not just to make it easier for Muslim travelers to find food, prayer spaces and alcohol-free activities that appeal to them. It’s also to support those travelers to branch out of their comfort zones and feel empowered exploring the world.

“We specialize in pushing people to non-Muslim majority countries,” said Mr. Goh. “The most popular destinations we work on are Japan and Korea. Our audience is young — 25 to 30 years old — and very influenced by K-pop and Instagram, so we write a lot about how welcoming those places are.”

Ms. Hamdi of Halal Travel Guide agreed. “We encourage Muslims to seek culturally immersive travel experiences outside of the traditional Muslim-friendly destinations such as Dubai and Morocco,” she said. “Muslims are looking for added value to their trips — from private beaches where women can bathe without men to disturb them, and more than this, trips that offer the Muslim traveler the chance to experience something completely different.”

ARRIVAL TRANSFER: On Saturday from   10 am - 12 pm (2-hour window)

Many airlines including British Airways, EasyJet and Jet2 all fly direct to Dubrovnik Airport, where our driver will pick you up and take you across the border into Bosnia.

DEPARTURE TRANSFER: On Thursday,   your plane should not depart before 12 pm , to give you time to get to the airport from Bosnia, which takes around 2.5 hours to drive from Mostar-Dubrovnik Airport. You can choose an even later flight and spend the afternoon exploring Dubrovnik at your leisure (it's entirely up to you).

These transfer windows have been planned to align with most international flights to Dubrovnik. We welcome guests from all nationalities and countries to join the trip and can arrange separate airport transfers where necessary, for an additional fee of £160.

Welcome to Bosnia!

We'll pick you up at Dubrovnik Airport and begin the scenic drive along the   Adriatic coast   as we enter Bosnia. Today you'll enjoy your first meal in Bosnia and begin exploring Herzegovina's beautiful mountain and river scenery.

Once we've crossed the border into Bosnia we'll take you for your first lunch with us in the quaint town of Stolac, before continuing the journey to your hotel.

Tonight you'll spend your first evening in the   Old Town in Mostar , only a few minutes walk from the famous   Stari Most.

Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

Today you'll get your adrenaline pumping with one of our adventures. Depending on the weather, you'll either go rafting on the   Neretva River   or hiking in   Lukomir   or quad-biking! This activity varies according to the season, so we'll take you rafting from late Spring-early Autumn, and arrange hiking or quad biking during the late autumn/winter season

Tonight, we'll check into our hotel in   Sarajevo .

Today you'll wake up in Bosnia's capital city, where powerful and influential historical figures have permanently left their mark on the city.

Our expert local guide will walk you through the cobblestone streets of the   Bascarsija , where you can hear a muezzin make the call to prayer from the minaret of   Gazi Husrev Beg mosque . Today we'll be hosting you for lunch in this beautiful old city centre, sharing tales from this historic city. You'll also have some free time this afternoon to explore the traditional handmade crafts stalls and bakeries.

 Today is the day we visit the   memorial site of Srebrenica-Potocari , where at least 8, 372 victims were murdered in July 1995.

The worst event to take place on European soil since WWII, you’ll hear from a survivor exactly what it was like to be Muslim in Bosnia during the war. By visiting this memorial site you’re taking part in the necessary effort to keep these stories alive for future generations to learn from.

Today we'll drive you back to Mostar, where we'll take you to visit the Blagaj Dervish Lodge, a beautiful hideaway located on the source of the river Buna.  You'll want to spend some time here enjoying the beauty and peace of this location, so we'll serve you lunch here and give you time to pray. We'll then take you on to   Pocitelj Fortress   where you can get a spectacular viewpoint of the Neretva River . 

Tonight, enjoy free time to explore   Mostar's Old Town   on your final evening in Bosnia.

You can complete   the Fajr prayer in the local mosque   to have a chance to enjoy the peace and quiet of this historic Ottoman town.

We'll drive you back to   Dubrovnik Airport   for your return flight home. Thank you for choosing to experience Bosnia with us!

Terms & Conditions of Booking

Please familiarise yourself with the Ts&Cs below. It's very important that you have read these before booking your flights, to give yourself the best preparation and protection.

• A £60 deposit is required to confirm your booking. The deposit is non-transferable and non-refundable.
• Full payment is required no later than 8 weeks before your trip departure.
• Once you have made your full payment it is non-refundable and non-transferable. You may sell your space to somebody else should you find you are no longer able to travel. 
• Cancellations less than 10 weeks before trip departure are liable to incur costs. Should you anticipate challenges travelling, please give us as much notice as possible.
• We   strongly recommend   you buy travel insurance as soon as making your booking, to protect yourself in case unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to travel. This should include medical cover and cancellation protection in the event of covid, flight cancellations, illness etc.
• Entry requirements: It is incumbent upon each traveller to familiarise themselves with the entry requirements to the country they are visiting.   This includes visas and covid testing status. 
• The itinerary is a suggested outline of the route we will take and the activities that we'll experience.   We will keep it flexible and make changes in the event the weather, or road conditions mean we need to adjust our plans. The same goes for our activity coordinators - in the event they are unwell or unable to attend due to a private emergency, don't worry; we'll arrange a suitable alternative.
• All guests are screened following booking. Should you not pass the screening process, your deposit will be refunded.
• You will receive details of the accommodations you'll be hosted at in your welcome pack, after booking. We expect you to research the accommodations in advance so that you know what to expect on the trip, particularly if you are opting for a shared room.
• Once you are on the trip, there are no refunds, partial refunds or credit refunds.  
• Should your flight be cancelled, it is incumbent upon you to book a suitable alternative. If you do not attend the trip this will be classed as a no-show, and no refunds will be given.   (This is where your travel insurance recommended in clause 5 will come in handy!).

The weather in Thailand  is split into 3 different seasons. The hot season which falls between March and May, the cool season which falls between November and February and the rainy season which tends to occur between June and October. 

During the rainy season it is not all gloom and despair as showers are fairly quick to come and pass and only tend to occur in the late afternoon, they also provide travellers with welcome respite from the heat and humidity.  The quietest time of year in Thailand is between May and September, when the temperature, humidity and prices all drop.

Manila is the second largest city in the Philippines and is also one of the most densely-populated cities in the whole world. Manila is strategically located at the centre of the Pacific Sea Trading Routes and is a tourist hot-spot with visitors from all over the world flocking to this highly urbanized city every year.

The city has seen much international occupation throughout the centuries and the last vestiges of the British and Spanish occupation are still seen in the languages spoken. Filipina is the main language, with Tagalog also being widely used. The main foreign languages are English and Spanish which have survived the centuries and used by the older generations. The majority of Manila inhabitants are Christians and Roman Catholics; but there is also a rich Muslim heritage in some parts of Manila.

The two main airports in Manila area are the Clark International Airport and Ninoy Aquino International Airport . The Clark International Airport is located in the country's Clark Freeport Zone and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport - the busier of the two airports - is located in Parañaque. Another airport is the secondary Subic Bay International Airport, which is a main diversion airport of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Day 02 Kandy

• After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, you will visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Situated on the banks of the Mahaveli River, these gardens were originally established as a pleasure garden during the British colonial era. Today, they are renowned for their vast collection of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. Take a leisurely stroll along the green lawns, marvel at the flower arches, and make sure not to miss the impressive Javan tree, a great spot for photos. The suspension bridge is another highlight, offering a unique perspective of the garden.
• In the evening, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the Kandy Cultural Dance Show. This captivating performance showcases the rich arts, dances, and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Kandy's old city and provides a wonderful insight into the country's vibrant traditions.
• Afterward, return to your 4-star hotel in Kandy for an overnight stay on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 03 (Kandy-Nuwara Eliya (Approx. 4 hours Drive)

• After having breakfast at the hotel in Kandy, you will proceed to Nuwara Eliya. On the way, you will stop to visit the magnificent Ramboda Falls. Standing at an impressive height of 109 meters (358 feet), Ramboda Falls is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and a stunning natural attraction. Located in the Pussellawa area of Ramboda, along the A5 highway, it is formed by the convergence of Panna Oya, a tributary of Kothmale Oya. The falls are twinned with Dunsinane Falls, which is formed by another tributary of the Kothmale River, Pundalu Oya, creating a captivating Y shape at the base.
• Continuing your journey, you will visit a Tea Factory and Tea Plantation in Nuwara Eliya. This region is renowned for its picturesque and lush green tea estates. It is Sri Lanka's most famous tea-growing district, and a visit to the tea plantations is a must. You will have the opportunity to learn about tea production, witness the tea-making process, and immerse yourself in the scenic beauty of the tea estates.
• Afterwards, you will check-in at a 4-star hotel in Nuwara Eliya for an overnight stay on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 04 (Nuwara Eliya- Yala (Approx. 4.5 Hours Drive)

• After enjoying breakfast at the hotel in Nuwara Eliya, you will continue your journey towards Yala.
• Along the way, you will have the opportunity to visit Rawana Falls, a famous tourist destination in Sri Lanka. The falls are named after the mythical king Ravana, who is mentioned in the Indian epic, Ramayana. According to folklore, Ravana is said to have hidden Princess Sita in the caves behind the waterfall, now known as the Ravana Ella Cave.
• Upon reaching Yala, you will embark on an exciting evening safari at Yala National Park. As the most well-known and second-largest wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka, Yala National Park is located in the southeast of the country, bordering the southern and eastern provinces. The park is renowned for its diverse range of wildlife, with the leopard population being a particular highlight. Yala National Park is home to 32 species of mammals, 125 species of birds (including migratory birds), and an impressive density of up to 35 leopards. Spotting these elusive creatures can be challenging due to their nocturnal nature, but the park offers a thrilling opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat.
• After the safari, you will retire to your 4-star hotel in Yala for an overnight stay on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 05 (Yala- Bentota/ Beruwala (Approx. 3.5 Hours Drive)

• After enjoying breakfast at the hotel in Yala, you will continue your journey towards Bentota/Beruwala, with a stopover at Galle.
• On the way, you will have the opportunity to witness the unique practice of stilt fishing in Weligama. Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing method found only in Sri Lanka, particularly in the southern coastal region. Fishermen perch on a crossbar, known as "petta," which is attached to a vertical pole driven into the seabed. From this elevated position, they cast their lines and patiently wait for the fish to strike. It is a fascinating sight and a testament to the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
• Next, you will visit the Galle Dutch Fort, also known as the Galle Fort, which was built by the Portuguese in 1588. Located in the bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, this fortress features 14 bastions and stands as the best-preserved example of a fortified city constructed by Europeans in Asia. The Galle Dutch Fort seamlessly blends European architectural styles with South Asian traditions, creating a unique and captivating atmosphere. In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, UNESCO designated the Galle Dutch Fort as a World Heritage Site in 1988.
• Upon reaching Bentota/Beruwala, you will check-in to your 4-star hotel for an overnight stay on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 06 (Bentota/ Beruwala)

• After having breakfast at the hotel in Bentota/Beruwala, you will embark on a river safari at Madu Ganga.
• The Madu Ganga River Boat Safari is a popular attraction in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Located in the Balapitiya area, this safari takes you along the Madu Ganga River as it flows into the Indian Ocean. The river is surrounded by a 915-hectare complex coastal wetland ecosystem, forming a pristine lagoon. During the boat journey, you will have the opportunity to see kraal fishing structures, where local fishermen use traditional methods to catch fish. You may also spot various bird species such as pond herons and blue kingfishers that inhabit the wetland area. The boat excursion includes visits to a cinnamon island, Temple Island for worship, and a fish treatment experience, making it a unique and immersive adventure.
• Next, you will visit a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda. Sri Lanka is known for its conservation efforts to protect sea turtles, and the hatchery in Kosgoda plays a significant role in this endeavor. You will learn about the conservation initiatives, observe the turtle hatchlings, and gain insights into the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures.
• After a day of exploration, you will return to your 4-star hotel in Bentota/Beruwala for an overnight stay on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 07 (Bentota/Beruwala - Airport  (Approx 2.5 hours Drive)

• After enjoying breakfast at your hotel in Bentota/Beruwala, you will proceed to Colombo for the final leg of your journey.
• In Colombo, you will embark on a city tour that will take you to various attractions. Your tour will include a visit to the Gangarama Buddhist Temple, a prominent temple located in the heart of Colombo. You will also explore Galle Face Green, a popular seaside promenade, and visit notable landmarks such as the Dutch Hospital, the Old Parliament Building, Colombo Harbour, the Slave Island area, the War Memorial, Colombo Public Library, Colombo National Museum, Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre, Viharamahadevi Park, Town Hall, the race track shopping area, Independence Square, Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, and a replica of the Aukana Buddha statue. These highlights will provide you with a glimpse into the city's rich history, culture, and architectural wonders.
• After the city tour, you will have some free time at leisure for any last-minute shopping or to simply relax and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Colombo.
• Finally, with unforgettable memories of your tour in Sri Lanka, you will proceed to the airport for your departure flight.
