Jonathan Tetelman recalls his journey from a nightclub DJ to an international opera star

NEW YORK (AP) — Jonathan Tetelman transformed from a nightclub DJ to an international opera star, a music detour that was quite, well, operatic.

He stopped singing in 2011 and mixed music for New York’s clubbers at Webster Hall, Pacha, Greenhouse and W.i.P. These days, the 35-year-old’s gigs are at posher places such as London’s Royal Opera House and the Salzburg Festival.

His career revived by a transition to tenor from baritone, Tetelman will be featured as Ruggero in a Metropolitan Opera performance of Puccini’s “La Rondine (The Swallow)” with soprano Angel Blue, televised live to theaters worldwide Saturday. Starting April 26, he sings Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly” opposite soprano Asmik Grigorian in her Met debut.

“I kept saying to people, ‘You know, I’m a DJ, but I’m actually an opera singer.’ And the more I said it, the more I was like: ’Am I really an opera singer?’” Tetelman recalled of his singing sabbatical.

So he gave himself six months.

“I just sold everything. I sold all my equipment. All my speakers, all my turntables — everything — and just focused,” he said.

Born in Chile, Tetelman was adopted at about 7 months and grew up in Hopewell Township, New Jersey. He got a degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2011 and considered himself a baritone.

Tetelman moved on to the Mannes School of Music for a graduate program where he was told his upper register was his future but struggled with even audition standards. Overcome with frustration, he headed to the downtown nightlife scene in 2013.

“It just wasn’t — it wasn’t clicking. I threw it all away,” he said.

After concluding that club life wasn’t a future, Tetelman began listening to recordings of Luciano Pavarotti, Enrico Caruso, Franco Corelli and Jonas Kaufmann to understand how they used their voices. Working with Mark Schnaible and Patricia McCaffrey, a husband-and-wife vocal coach team, he began building his tenor technique in 2015.

“This young man is wildly talented,” Schnaible said.

By his mid-20s, Tetelman thought himself too old for professional training programs, so he found an agent. He sang Eisenstein in Johann Strauss II’s “Die Fledermaus (The Bat)” at the Martina Arroyo Foundation’s young artists program in 2016. He then paid a few hundred dollars to attend an open call casting audition. That led to the role of Rodolfo in Puccini’s “La Bohème” at the Fujian Grand Theatre in China in 2017.

He was hired for “Bohème” in November 2018 at the English National Opera, where all performances are in English.

Tetelman prepared by singing in “La Boheme Warhola” — an adaptation of the classic that shifts to Andy Warhol’s The Factory studio — with Pittsburgh Festival Opera at the Falk Auditorium, a 360-seat school theater. Around the same time, agent Alan Green arranged for Tetelman to take over Rodolfo for a concert performance at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Festival after Piotr Beczała withdrew to replace Roberto Alagna at the Bayreuth Festival’s “Lohengrin.”

That raised Tetelman’s profile before he headed to the London Coliseum for the revival of Jonathan Miller’s 2009 staging, a key accelerant of his career.

“The production and the theater are wonderful. ‘La Bohème’ in English is disgusting,” Tetelman recalled vividly.

A dashing 6-foot-4 with dark hair and a wide smile, he became an in-demand singer for Puccini.

“He has a very solid top. When he sings soft, which I always encourage, especially in the very intimate moments, there’s a tenderness,” conductor Speranza Scappucci said.

On the night of Tetelman’s Met debut on March 26, an audience member tossed a bouquet he caught on the fly.

“He’s certainly a very, very charismatic presence and the audiences are responding,” Met general manager Peter Gelb said.

Tetelman made his Salzburg Festival debut last summer in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s “Macbeth.” The staging opened in an obstetrician’s office with children wearing black and yellow patches warning of radiation.

“You had to be on like mushrooms or something to really understand it,” Tetelman said, quickly adding, “It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had. ... I think working with him was actually a really inspiring moment for me.”

Future roles include Turiddu in Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and a title role in Saint-Saëns’ “Samson et Dalila” along with the heavier Puccini parts of Dick Johnson in “La Fanciulla del West (Girl of the Golden West)” and des Grieux in “Manon Lescaut.” He’d like to take on Strauss’ Apollo in “Daphne” and Bacchus in “Ariadne auf Naxos” one day.

“I’m trying to book actually less and less Puccini just because I’ve booked so much,” Tetelman said.

Screen Rant

Knuckles ending explained: knuckles’ journey & sonic 3 set-up.

The six episodes of the Knuckles spin-off show are now streaming on Paramount+, complete with an action-packed ending setting up Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Knuckles season 1.

  • Knuckles' journey with Wade Whipple establishes Earth as a home for the Echidna warrior, finding a sense of belonging on the planet.
  • Knuckles' villains, G.U.N. agents and The Buyer, set up a thrilling showdown that ends with Knuckles defeating them and finding peace.
  • Wade Whipple's transformation into a braver character and ally hints at exciting developments for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, setting the stage for new adventures.

Knuckles is a spin-off of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , with the six episodes on Paramount+ ending the show in an action-packed fashion. Since Sonic 2 's release in April 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 's story has been highly anticipated. In order to make the wait for the third installment slightly easier, Paramount has crafted a spin-off TV show centered around Knuckles , telling a solo story about the Echidna warrior.

Knuckles ' voice cast sees Idris Elba return as the titular character, while Adam Pally leads the human cast as the returning Wade Whipple from the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. While many will question how much Sonic and Tails are in Knuckles , the show solidifies itself as a Knuckles-centric storyline. Journeying across the United States to train Wade in the ways of an Echidna warrior, Knuckles ' ending is suitably action-packed , expectedly hilarious, and even features some elements that set up the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 .

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will release in theaters on December 20, 2024.

Why Knuckles’ Journey With Wade Whipple Was Important

Knuckles' adventure with wade is a story about finding a home..

By the time of Knuckles ' ending, the titular Echidna and Wade Whipple had traveled to Reno, won a bowling tournament, and defeated the G.U.N. agents pursuing them. Concerning what the point of this journey was, it was to establish Earth as a home for Knuckles. After Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , it became clear that Tails and Sonic have acclimatized to Earth well. Knuckles quickly established that this was the opposite for him, with the warrior struggling to adapt to the more peaceful ways of everyday life on Earth.

Knuckles finally accepted Earth as somewhere he could live rather than begrudgingly stay to watch over the Master Emerald.

Similarly, a big part of Knuckles' story is that he is without a family after his tribe was destroyed. That said, through Knuckles' journey with Wade, he came to accept that Earth could be his home. Through his newfound friendship with Wade, his connection to Wade's family, the people he met, and the places he saw throughout the show's six episodes, Knuckles finally accepted Earth as somewhere he could live rather than begrudgingly stay to watch over the Master Emerald.

Knuckles Villains Explained: Who Are The G.U.N. Agents & The Buyer?

Knuckles' antagonists are connected to the echidna, sonic, and doctor robotnik..

The three villains of Knuckles were introduced earlier in the show; two of the villains are G.U.N. agents who wish to track Knuckles down and sell him to the other of the show's villains, The Buyer. The G.U.N. agents are called Agent Willoughby and Agent Mason and are played by Ellie Taylor and Scott Mescudi respectively, while The Buyer is played by Game of Thrones alum Rory McCann. Concerning the two agents, they are tasked with capturing Knuckles, driven by the money they will be paid for this but also their disillusionment with G.U.N.

Willoughby and Mason are annoyed that G.U.N. began allowing aliens like Knuckles, Sonic, and Tales to live on Earth after supposedly being an agency that prevents such instances from occurring. McCann's aptly named Buyer is the one who will be paying the agents to capture Knuckles in a bid to steal the latter's power. By the time of Knuckles ' ending, The Buyer is revealed as a former lackey of Jim Carrey's Doctor Robotnik, desiring Knuckles' power to exact revenge on the aliens that caused him to lose his position as a G.U.N. agent.

What Happened To The G.U.N. Agents In Knuckles' Ending?

Knuckles' ending sees the g.u.n. agents and the buyer face off with the warrior..

In Knuckles ' ending, the titular Echidna is cornered by the G.U.N. agents. This leads to a lengthy action sequence in a hotel penthouse in Reno, in which Knuckles faces off against his enemies while Wade Whipple saves his family. Eventually, Knuckles uses the power of two rings to defeat Willoughby and Mason , sending the two to an unknown location. The agents are not seen again by the time of Knuckles' ending, proving that the Echidna defeated them once and for all.

Knuckles uses a giant globe-like structure atop a nearby building to crush The Buyer and his suit, ending the threat to Knuckles' life and allowing Knuckles ' ending to be a happy one.

However, Knuckles ' ending then has The Buyer ambush Knuckles as the two battle on the streets of Reno. Sporting a massive exoskeleton that runs off Knuckles' power via GUN experiments , The Buyer quickly overpowers the hero. Wade Whipple then comes to Knuckles' aid, buying enough time for the Echidna to regain his strength, before he begins destroying The Buyer's robotic suit. After a battle, Knuckles uses a giant globe-like structure atop a nearby building to crush The Buyer and his suit, ending the threat to Knuckles' life and allowing Knuckles ' ending to be a happy one.

Wade Whipple Learned What It Means To Be An Echidna Warrior

Wade's journey is just as transformative as his alien friend's by the time of knuckles' ending..

Despite the show being named after Knuckles, Wade Whipple is arguably as important a character as the Echidna himself. Knuckles ' ending allows the warrior to come around to the ways of Earth, coming to call the planet his new home. Where Wade is concerned, the journey allowed him to become a much more confident, competent character as he learned the ways of an Echidna warrior from his new friend Knuckles. In Knuckles episode 4, Wade is shown fighting through his fears and becoming much braver.

Wade's arc then came to a head in Knuckles ' ending , where he came up against his father, who had abandoned him. Cary Elwes' "Pistol" Pete Whipple is cartoonishly evil as the show's bowling antagonist, but serves a purpose in that Wade confronts him for his mistakes. After proving his father was wrong to abandon Wade, his mother, and his sister, Wade beats Pete in a bowling competition. This, combined with Wade standing up to The Buyer after Knuckles was momentarily defeated, proves that Wade found his inner warrior by Knuckles ' ending.

How Knuckles' Ending Sets Up Sonic The Hedgehog 3

The next installment in the sonic the hedgehog franchise can include many knuckles elements..

Knuckles is admittedly more self-contained than many assumed it would be and has little in the way of explicit setup for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . That said, several character changes, thematic elements, and small world-building aspects could be tied into the story of Sonic 3 when it releases in December 2024. Knuckles ' ending sets up Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with the Echidna now being more willing to protect Earth. While he swore a vow to protect the Master Emerald, his experiences with Wade could see Knuckles fight not just for that, but for Earth itself in the future.

The Buyer's mention of Doctor Robotnik also sets up Jim Carrey's return in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as Eggman.

Sonic 3 Has The Robotnik I've Been Waiting 4 Years For & It Makes Jim Carrey's Return So Much Better

Similarly, Wade's character change could see him be more of a direct ally in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . Rather than just being a bumbling friend of Tom's, Wade could present his newfound bravery in a way that directly impacts the third film. Furthermore, The Buyer's Knuckles storyline indicates that G.U.N. has a lot of ways to harness the powers of creatures like Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 officially including Shadow the Hedgehog, it could be the case that the villain's powers are used to create a larger arsenal of G.U.N. weaponry.

Knuckles is a spin-off of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise created for Paramount+. Idris Elba reprises his role as Knuckles the Echidna in the action-adventure series, and the show will follow him on a new adventure as he meets new allies and faces new foes.

Amanda (the owner) is a joy to know and I was so glad to have her trust when I was managing senior care and she placed seniors with us. She loves her clients and their families and I have trusted her when referring my family members needing help with placing their loved ones.

The ONLY place to go for Senior Living Consulting and placement! Amanda is thorough and professional. We found a place for my Mother in less than a day and it's perfect! Save time and frustration and choose "A Senior Journey!" Glad we did!

Photo of W L.

Facing the prospect of placing a loved one in assisted living is devastating. Having to do it under high duress is something no one should have to go through, and who among us comes to such a situation with experience? We needed help, and thanks to fellow yelpers and an A+ accredited rating on the Better Business Bureau, we took a chance on Amanda, and never looked back. Amanda was there for us every step of the way. She is compassionate, but not doting. She is personable and professional. She is business like, but considerate at the same time. Without Amanda, we wouldn't even know where to start. I told her what we needed, when we needed it, and what we could afford. She narrowed it down to 3 places (one of which she had chosen for her own mom recently). I quickly researched the questions to ask ahead of time, but she often beat me to the punch and asked for us. She knows the folks running these places and they know her. If I had tried to cold call these places, I don't know how it would have gone. Once we settled on a place, other obstacles out of our control got thrown in our path, and I had to go back to Amanda again for help and she was right there, finding more selections for us the SAME day. We never felt pressured, although she did help us stay on track. We didn't pay her anything, but we did sign a confirmation acknowledging that she would receive a commission if we successfully placed our family member at any of the places to which she referred us. I am happy with that arrangement. We never felt we were being sold on a place that was subpar. We saw a range of places, got to talk to residents and staff, and made our choice. We were never rushed through the process. Not only did we feel like we were in good hands with Amanda, but we got UNSOLICITED, positive feedback from other professionals who have interacted with Amanda in other cases like ours: various hospital staff, and a woman from the fire department. So, she has built a good reputation across various other disciplines, and I respect that. I recommend A Senior Journey without reservation.

Photo of Edward G.

Dear Sharon, Thank you for your kind words about Amanda's ability to show assisted living facilities to potential residents and their loved ones.  I have had the opportunity to observe her conscientious work with the elderly in Tucson for over the past 15 years.  She really takes satisfaction finding the right placement for each individual.  She attempts to give each potential resident and their loved one's choices of many types of living situations and facilities.  It is the resident or their family that makes the final choice in their selection.  I understand that sometimes things don't work out and the placement isn't a good fit for the resident or the facility.  Unfortunately, Amanda does not have the jurisdiction over the financial portion of the agreement that is contracted between the client and the facility.  It is the responsibility of the resident or the resident's representative to review the contract of admission before signing the agreement. She has never interfered with this part of the process since each facility is legally accountable for honoring their own contracts.  My suggestion to you is that you review the contract and see what was agreed up between you and the facility upon admission.  It should outline what happens at the termination of residency by either party.  I hope this information was helpful to you in response to your concern. Edward G.

Photo of Sharon 6.

Amanda is good at showing facilities, but she claims to be an "advocate" for her clients. When I asked her for help with a facility that took advantage of me financially, she did not help - at all! She wouldn't even call the owner (who did not respond to over 15 messages from me). That, to me, is not an advocate. (Yelp shows me as living in San Francisco. I do not. I live in Tucson.

Photo of Cindy S.

I called Amanda late one afternoon and she took the time to talk to me for nearly an hour, listening to my needs and concerns for my Uncle's assisted care placement. The VERY NEXT MORNING she took me on a tour of 5 different locations. With her phenomenal understanding of the industry, she was able to zero in on precisely what was needed. At this writing, 2 months later, I could not be happier with her services and the location she helped me find. She was like a trusted friend who came alongside at a very difficult and overwhelming time and I will forever be grateful to Amanda and A Senior Journey. Thank you Amanda!!

Photo of Jamy M.

Amanda is amazing!! She is extremely knowledgeable with many years of experience! I highly recommend her services. She is compassionate, thorough and follows-up afterwards. You don't see a lot of that these days!

Photo of Robin L.

I have known and referred clients to Amanda for years without a hesitation. I gave Amanda another referral Friday night which she immediately took care of over the weekend. She has a heart if gold and a tremendous work ethic.

Photo of Julz M.

There is no one better than Amanda and Shelby. Period! I cannot say enough about their experience but above that, their care and concern for your loved one is their number one priority! Five stars are not enough!!!

Photo of Cindy A.

Amanda is a caring, compassionate person who does an exceptional job at helping people find just the right independent or assisted living for their loved ones! I would highly recommend her to anyone who's needing assistance with this.

Gen z is getting rich fast: here's how to win us over.

Gen Z owner of Bussler & Co , a New York marketing firm.

It's no secret that many businesses are struggling to connect with Gen Z. For every Wendy's X post that goes viral , there are countless examples of stale, out-of-tune marketing that falls flat. But is it because companies aren't trying hard enough, or because they still see Gen Z as a bunch of kids with no spending power? Well, as a Gen Zer myself, I've got news for you: We're not kids anymore, and we're not broke either.

I recently wrote about how Gen Z is accumulating wealth at a staggering rate. We’re not just doing okay; we’re actually really well-off as a whole. In 2022, nearly a third of 25-year-old Americans were already homeowners, outpacing both millennials and Gen X at the same age. Our luxury spending is expected to grow three times faster than older generations.

A lot of this comes down to the fact that Gen Z wages are growing roughly twice as fast as those of other generations. While many Gen Zers were broke a few years ago, we’re quickly becoming a financial force. The era of Gen Z is here, and businesses that fail to adapt their marketing strategies risk missing out on a serious gold rush.

How To Target Gen Z

Born between 1997 and 2012, Gen Z is more than just a demographic—we're a force to be reckoned with. By 2026, we're projected to be the largest consumer population in the U.S. We're digital natives. We demand that the brands we support align with our values and speak our language.

‘Challengers’ Reviews: Does Zendaya Tennis Movie Score With Critics?

‘baby reindeer’ star says real martha searches need to stop, patriots select north carolina quarterback drake maye with no 3 pick in nfl draft.

We're fundamentally different from any generation that's come before us. We've grown up in a world shaped by social media, economic upheaval and political polarization. We're savvy, skeptical and quick to call out brands that try to deceive us. To win our loyalty, businesses need to get real and get creative.

So, how do you effectively market to Gen Z? The first step is to forget everything you think you know about marketing. Traditional advertising, generic social media posts and inauthentic influencer campaigns won't cut it. To capture the attention and respect of Gen Z, you need to play by our rules.

Rule 1: Be Authentic

Gen Z can detect nonsense from a mile away, and we won't hesitate to expose brands that try to pull the wool over our eyes. Be transparent about your values, own up to your mistakes, and follow through on your promises.

Rule 2: Meet Us Where We Are

Gen Z lives and breathes social media, but not just any platform will do. To reach us, you need to be creating native content on the platforms we actually use, like TikTok and Instagram. If you're not fluent in our language and culture, you're already losing the battle.

Rule 3: Involve Us In The Process

The best way to understand and connect with Gen Z is to have Gen Z voices at the table. This means hiring young talent, partnering with Gen Z influencers and bringing in Gen Z consultants to help steer your strategy. Our firsthand experience in creating content that resonates, navigating the ever-changing social media landscape and building authentic connections with our peers can be invaluable.

The rise of Gen Z is not a fad—it's an enormous shift that's already redefining the business world. The companies that recognize this and adapt their marketing strategies accordingly will be the ones that strike gold.
