What is Marmaris?

Marmaris is a picturesque coastal holiday town located in the Mugla Province in Turkey. It resides in the southwest of Turkey, alongside the coastline of the Turkish Riviera . It is home to golden beaches, serene coves, lush hillsides, and the bluest waters you've ever seen. The population normally sits at around 40.000 but during the summer season, can rise to 400.000 people.

The Marmaris peninsula is dotted with magnificent landmarks , from ancient battle sites to uninhabited islands open for tourism and waters home to many sea life unique to this part of the world. But the city center is where most of the attraction lies for many holidayers.

An abundance of world-famous restaurants, hotels, pubs, clubs, you name it, they can all be found right here in the centre of town. But which ones are the best places you can go to to get the most bang for your buck?

Marmaris is famous for its many restaurants . Whatever you may be craving, chances are Marmaris will have a restaurant serving it. But of course, the most sought-after dishes are the mouth-watering kebabs .

Most of the partying also take place in the city center. Bar Street , in particular, is a haven for madness during evenings and night-time. If you're looking to let loose and drink till the early morning, the bar street will probably be the place for you.

History of Marmaris

According to Herodotus (a famous historian from ancient Greece), Marmaris has been around for over 5 millennia . However, this cute little holiday resort in the Mediterranean has more than seen its share of conquest . The same sunny beaches that make it so attractive now, unfortunately, also made it quite attractive to famous conquerors of the past .

First, in 300 BC, Alexander The Great took a liking to Marmaris (Caria at the time). Then, The Knights of St. John conquered the surrounding areas to fortify their main castle at Rhodes. And finally, Suleiman the Magnificent of The Ottoman Empire decided it was time for a quick vacation and took the town for himself, after years of bloody battles, that is.

Today, Marmaris still carries the marks of its long history. Mainly, Marmaris Castle , located in the center of town, serves as an exciting monument and a must-visit museum for travelers. The feeling of standing in the same courtyard as many famous conquerors of the past is an especially cool one for the history buffs. The castle is also quite high, providing a panoramic view of Marmaris for those looking to share a few holiday photos.

Marmaris has had its fair share of trouble this year, and as a result, many holidayers are unsure as to how safe they will be if they do decide to come here. To remedy this, we've conducted an interview with the Marmaris Town Council mayor, Ufuk Beytekin.

Level of Crime

Crime is a big concern among travelers when planning a holiday. In many touristic areas of the world, crime is a serious problem, and let's face it, no one wants to go through an unpleasant situation during a holiday.

Luckily, though, Marmaris has always been essentially crime-free . It is, in fact, one of the safest holiday towns in Turkey. However, one aspect of Marmaris that all visitors should be aware of is the traffic .

During summers, the roads are quite populated , and with the bar street so close by, it is very important to be careful when crossing the road. Be sure to double-check at all times and be especially careful around zebra crossings , as many drivers tend to disregard these in Turkey.

2024 Update: Since the publication of this article, new crime figures have been released, and luckily for both holidayers and locals, the crime rates have decreased to record lows. This is in part related to the municipal government's actions to make sure that Marmaris maintains its positive image for potential visitors, especially following the forest fires.

Precautions Against Covid-19

As of 2024, Covid-19 levels have come close to zero in Turkey, and wearing masks is no longer mandatory. By no means does that mean we are completely in the clear, though. So, the municipal government continues taking precautions against the spreading of the virus.

All establishments have redesigned interior areas to accommodate fewer people at the same time, and deliveries of disinfectants are being carried out regularly. Other than that, the government has also audited all restaurants and takeaways to make sure everyone implements the precautionary measures against Covid-19.

Forest Fires

The nearby forest areas were affected very badly by the fires back in August . Some forest sections around Marmaris have burnt down altogether. This brings out the question of whether fires might break out again this summer.

Fortunately, the government has taken many steps to ensure that the forests around Marmaris will be safe against fires this year . This includes extensive monitoring , stationing fire helicopters in Mugla province, and increasing the number of forest rangers .

Dalaman International Airport is the nearest airport to Marmaris. It is also the first destination in Turkey for most visitors flying here. But it is almost 100 kilometers from the city center, which means you may need to make use of one of the airport transfer services to get to your hotel. Private Transfers

Private transfers are cars or luxury vans that visitors can hire to take them into town. With these, you don't have to worry about anything as they pick you up from the airport and drop you off wherever you choose. They are very convenient and you can find a large number of transfer services both at the airport itself and online.

However, private transfers are quite expensive , with a typical return trip costing anywhere between £40-£60 . If you do decide to book a private transfer, make sure to do so with a reputable firm . The prices may be a bit higher, but you won't have to worry about them arriving late, or in fact, not arriving at all .

Public Transport

There are two airport transfer services at Dalaman provided by the government , Havas and Muttas. These are transfer buses located at the airport exit. They are the most common type of transfer used by tourists and are very cheap, priced at 60 - 85 TRY .

Taxis are arguably the most convenient mode of transfer into Marmaris. They are located at the airport exit and operate at all hours of the day. As of 2024, taxis from Dalaman Airport to Marmaris city center cost around 450 TRY (£20) . Mind you, the TRY price may increase as a result of inflation, but GBP-wise prices tend to remain the same most of the time.

Marmaris City Center

The city center offers the most convenience for those looking to enjoy the many restaurants, bars, beaches, and shops of the city. Marmaris is quite tightly packed, so most hotels near the city center will be within walking distance of the major attractions.

Many of the five-star hotels in Marmaris are located outside the city center due to a lack of space. So, in the city center, you'll find many apart-hotels and boutique hotels . These are apartment blocks, usually about three stories high, that have been turned into hotels after the tourism boom in the 90s. They are usually very lively and have high reviews.

If you're looking for a more reasonably priced stay , apart-hotels in the city center are a great option. They provide many of the amenities offered in some of the bigger hotels, like spas and pools, and prices may be as low as £30 per night .

When looking for a hotel, make sure to research and compare prices from different websites. By doing so, you may save up to 20% as prices vary greatly between websites.

Hotels in Icmeler

Icmeler is Marmaris' neighbor, located 8 km from the city center. It is also a very popular tourist destination thanks to the many beaches and coves that surround it. The settlement itself is quite small, which means however far your hotel is from the center, chances are you can probably walk there in 15 mins.

Icmeler has many hotels and apart-hotels. Hotel prices here are much lower than those in Marmaris city center because of the extra distance, so if you don't mind taking a quick bus into town now and then, Icmeler will probably be the best option.

Typical rates for decent five-star hotels in Icmeler are around £50 per night (per person) , and you can expect to find apart-hotels for around £20.

Hotels in Armutalan

Armutalan is the smallest of the three, located 1.5 km away from the city center. It's very close to the city center, but when you go there for the first time, it seems like a smaller version of Marmaris , with its own shops, restaurants, bars, etc.

Armutalan is a great choice for those that want a reasonably priced stay and don't mind the walk into the city center. A typical apart-hotel in Armutalan costs around £30 per night .

Where to Eat in Marmaris

Marmaris is home to some of the best cuisine in the world . There are over 300 restaurants in Marmaris, serving anything from jacket potatoes to meter-long pide and kebabs . We highly recommend you pick where you'd like to go beforehand because you might have a chance to taste the best food you've ever had here in Marmaris.

There is nothing better than cooling off and enjoying a delicious kebab with the family after a tiring day under the sun. Marmaris kebabs are well known in the rest of Turkey as well, which is why thousands of Turkish tourists also flock to the restaurants and grill houses in the evenings.

Dining at Netsel Marina

Dining at Long Beach

Long Beach is a wide pedestrian way, spanning the entire length of Marmaris' main road . It faces the beach on one side, including the tourist favorite central beach, and numerous restaurants on the other side. Restaurants at Long Beach are the center of dining in Marmaris .

Icmeler also has many great restaurants. What separates Icmeler restaurants from the others is the serenity . Restaurants in Icmeler are spread out more than those in the city center, which means you can have a relaxing meal with the family or a romantic date .

Some of the beachside restaurants like Tiki Beach are huge favorites among locals and returning visitors. The lush atmosphere and spacey dining areas make for great meals indeed.

Where to Drink in Marmaris

Marmaris is famous for its many pubs and cocktail bars. During summers, bars along Long Beach and Bar Street are packed with locals and visitors looking to drink and have a good time. It's an incredibly fun activity for many holidayers to take part in the many shows, special nights, and drinking games that take place nightly in many of the popular bars.

Marmaris' bar street is notorious for some of the wildest clubs and parties that take place here. From foam parties to neon and blackout parties, the Bar Street has activities for all party-lovers looking to explore new venues . For those more into the music, there are always a few talented DJs performing live in the techno clubs.

Most nightclubs charge around 150 TRY for entry, and drinks vary between 100 - 150 TRY. Keep in mind that most of the clubs are packed full during peak hours, so if you want a place at the front for a particular DJ or party, you might want to come a bit earlier, at around 8-9.

One more thing to keep in mind; as the clubs are so full, paying with a credit card might be a bit hard if you're not getting your drinks from the bar. If you don't want to navigate through a crowd of people to get drinks, you can grab a couple of beers from one of the wandering waiters, but you'd have to pay with cash, of course.

Clubs in Bar Street are also perfect for those looking to socialize and make friends with the locals . Especially during weekends, the clubs are full of easy-going locals looking to have fun and enjoy the crazy atmosphere. Most locals speak English very well . Marmaris is also pretty boring during the off-season, so it's a great chance for the locals to socialize and make new friends during the summer as well.

Long Beach (Uzunyali)

Long Beach is a great destination for families or those that want a more relaxing drink . The bars are more spacey and most of them have great kitchens as well. Rather than loud music, bars in Long Beach have a more chilled-out environment. Here, you can find a number of dance nights and karaoke nights that you can choose to watch.

Long Beach spans almost the whole of Marmaris' shoreline, so it might be a bit hard to browse all the bars and events when you're there. But in general, bars closer to the city center are more lush and cocktail-oriented , whereas those at the beach focus more on events and activities like theater plays and dance shows , and more fun for families.

Many of the bars along the beach also offer service to the beach area , where you can choose to escape with friends if the activities prove too much for you. The sunbeds are great to enjoy the summer breeze while listening to the waves or chatting with friends.

Most bars along Long Beach charge around 80 TRY for a single beer , but prices may vary depending on location. Some bars bring out kegs straight from the cellar for large groups which are more economical than ordering separately and make for really fun holiday photos (and no, they don't let you keep the keg).

Icmeler is also a popular drinking destination for tourists, supporting some of Marmaris' most famous bars like Tiki Beach and Scotia. Bars here are much more spacey compared to those in the city and offer a peaceful atmosphere where you can take in all the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Most bars in Icmeler are located on the beach, which is perfectly still in the evenings and creates a romantic feel for those looking for a romantic evening meal. The activities are more oriented towards families as well, ranging from Bingo night to Marmaris trivia quest.

Most bars in Icmeler are more luxurious than the ones in the city center, but prices in Icmeler are generally a bit lower because of the extra distance. So, a drink here costs around 60 - 90 TRY in most of the beachside bars.

One of Marmaris' biggest attractions is definitely the shopping . There is no better feeling than stuffing an extra suitcase with big brand jumpers, bags, and shoes that you bought almost for free . If you're planning to do a bit of shopping on your holiday, then you're in luck because there are clothing stores almost everywhere in Marmaris.

The Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is the biggest shopping center in Marmaris, housing hundreds of shops selling anything from Yeezy's to Hookah Pipes. It is a paradise for those that love to shop for clothes and accessories, where you can buy twenty pairs of Ray-Bans for the price of one, and get yourself a fresh pair of Nikes with the coins you found at the bottom of your bag.

Seriously, the back exit of The Grand Bazaar looks like the Grammys. Not for no reason though, as the shops in The Grand Bazaar keep a close eye on the newest releases and get them before everywhere else in Marmaris, so if there is a particular pair of trainers or handbag you're looking for, The Grand Bazaar is your best chance of finding it.

The prices in The Grand Bazaar are higher compared to some of the other shopping centers in Marmaris though. It's hard to give an estimated price of items as these vary greatly depending on the design and the particular store, but you can expect the prices to be around 30% more in general, compared to the rest of Marmaris.

Main Street

Marmaris' main street spans the whole distance from the city center to The Grand Yazici and is home to hundreds of replica stores. These are the most convenient stores for those staying near Long Beach because you'll probably be walking past them anyway when going down to the beach.

Shops on the main street are packed full in the summers because of their convenient location. While these may not be as design-oriented as the shops in The Grand Bazaar, they still have quite a variety of designs of some of the biggest brands.

Prices in the main street are not the cheapest in Marmaris, but they definitely are cheaper than The Grand Bazaar.

Icmeler Main Street

Icmeler's main street is also full of replica stores that offer reasonable prices for visitors. It is almost like a smaller version of The Grand Bazaar. Design-wise, it may not be as comprehensive as the prior, but when it comes to prices, the shops in Icmeler blow the rest out of the water.

The stores in Icmeler usually receive fewer customers , but more and more tourists are beginning to make the extra journey to Icmeler to get the biggest discounts. You can shop here for around 20%-30% less than in the city center. If you're planning to do a lot of shopping, Icmeler is a must-see option. It's also a great chance to explore Icmeler for those staying in the city center, as it also has numerous beaches, restaurants, and pubs.

Marmaris Excursions

Marmaris is famous for the countless number of activities you can take part in during your holidays, whether it be sailing away on a pirate ship, or diving for treasure. There are so many activities you can take part in with the family, as a couple or even on your own!

Some excursions, however, offer incredibly unique experiences like the Semi Submarine, where you can see the bottom of the sea while sitting and drinking a beer! Or, the crazy Davy Jones pirate ship tour, which is perfect for families wanting to give their kids lifelong memories.

There are so many different activities you can do in Marmaris, so it would take hours to explain them all, so below you'll find an overview of some of the most common activities and prices you can expect to pay.

Boat tours are the most common sea activities in Marmaris. During the summer, around 70 cruises sail away from the marina to the many coves and sea caves around Marmaris on a daily basis. Cruise tours in Marmaris range anywhere from small boats with sunbeds at the top to ultra-luxe tour yachts cruising to the crème de la crème of Marmaris coves.

The more economic tours cost around 120 TRY per person, and last around 4-6 hours with one complimentary meal and other food and beverage options once on board. These generally travel to the nearby coves and lagoons of Marmaris which are quite nice but can get very crowded during the summer.

Some of the more expensive options, however, like The Davy Jones, or luxury yacht cruises, travel further to the uninhabited islands around Marmaris and visit the best coves and underwater landmarks such as sunken ships, which you can snorkel down to. These are absolutely stunning and definitely worth the price, as some of them are unique to this part of the world. Typical prices for these high-end cruises are around 250 TRY per person.

Jeep Safari

Jeep safaris are very popular among tourists from other parts of Turkey. These sightseeing tours are extremely fun and give you a great chance to experience the beautiful landscape around Marmaris, as well as take photos at some of the most exhilarating and awe-inspiring vantage points.

The guided tours usually take place in convoys of 3-10 Jeeps and offer many activities on the way to keep you excited, such as water cannon fights. These usually travel to Marmaris National Park, where you can see local wildlife like wild horses and deer. Afterward, they visit some of the vantage points like the Beldibi viewpoint and then return to the city center.

The whole safari is a half-day event and usually takes about 6-8 hours and costs about 250-350 TRY per adult. Price rates for children are usually much lower.

Quad Safari

Now that's what I'm talking about! If you're interested in adrenaline-filled, fast-paced, and dangerous activities, the quad safaris are for you. Who wouldn't want to commandeer a kick-ass quad bike through some of the best waterfalls, mud baths, and other points of interest around Marmaris?

Quad safaris take place daily during the summers and travel around some of the nearby landmarks like the Turgut waterfalls. These are a series of waterfalls you may pass through while on safari, and most tours also have their lunch break here so you can dive into the pools at the bottom of the waterfalls. Keep in mind, however, that these pools of water are incredibly cold.

Quad safaris usually take around 6 hours, and typical rates for adults are around 300 TRY.

Rent a Quad!

Most holidayers wanting to travel around in Marmaris hop on a taxi or a minibus. But not you. You know how to travel around with style!

Quad bikes are a popular mode of transport in Marmaris, and chances are you'll be seeing quite a few during your stay. With a quad bike, you have the freedom to explore the vastly underrated attractions dotted around Marmaris without having to bear the responsibility and extra cost of renting a car.

Quad bikes are affordable, hassle-free, and very easy to commandeer. Don't forget to drive on the right side, however, and under no circumstances should you drive these around when intoxicated. Marmaris police are not lenient at all when it comes to drink driving.

You'll find the best prices for quad bikes in Icmeler or Armutalan, but if the distance is an issue and you don't mind paying a little extra, you can get your hands on one of these bad boys in Long Beach for around £20 a day.

It is very important for those planning a holiday here to have at least some information about the health services available in Marmaris. Pharmacies in Marmaris

It is very easy to find pharmacies in Marmaris' city center. There are a large number of these dotted around the main hotspots and you can identify them by the big plus sign displayed outside. You can purchase over-the-counter medicines, and if you use prescription medicines, you can purchase these without issue if you can show some sort of document like a prior prescription.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that pharmacies in Marmaris are all closed in the evening, except for some pre-determined pharmacies in the city center that have permission from the municipality to stay open in the evenings and at night to accommodate for any emergency medication needs people may have.

These pharmacies rotate daily, though, so it would be wise to get a hold of these timetables just in case. Most pharmacies in the city center will have these timetables on hand.

Hospitals in Marmaris

The city center houses many hospitals you can make use of if ever in need of some help. Among these, there are some of the more famous ones, like The Yucelen Hospital or Ahu Hospital. These are privately run hospitals that provide immaculate services and have some of the best doctors in southwest Turkey.

Treatment in these hospitals costs money but the rates are usually very low. There is also a state-owned hospital in Marmaris which is free for everyone and likewise has great health practitioners.

If you're ever in need of an ambulance, you should call 112. In Marmaris, ambulances usually arrive within 10-15 minutes. Other than that, private hospitals also have numbers you can contact in case of emergencies. The number for Ahu hospital, for example, is 0252-417-77-77.

One of the most popular things to do in Marmaris is to visit the small and charming Marmaris Castle. Rumoured to have ancient origins dating back to a mind-blowing 3000BC, various civilizations have utilized this incredible fortress over the years including the Persians, Romans, and most recently, the Ottomans. 

One of the most striking features of the castle, and perhaps why it was so vital to various armies, is the fact it is strategically positioned on a hill overlooking Marmaris Bay. Not only would this have been ideal in the event of an invasion, but it provides a commanding view of the surrounding area. 

A bonus of visiting Marmaris Castle is that it includes a visit to the Marmaris Museum located within the castle complex. It houses a huge collection of various artifacts and exhibits from the ancient Greek, Roman, and Ottoman eras including gorgeous pottery, sparkling jewelry, ancient coins, and even stoneware and tools.

The Ottoman section of the museum was the most impressive exhibit, in our opinion, with a wide variety of weapons, uniforms, and naval equipment on display.

2. Explore the quaint streets of Marmaris Old Town (Marmaris Carsi)

Marmaris Old Town, known locally as Marmaris Carsi, is a wonderful place to simply wandering around and explore all the nooks and crannies, shop for boutiques, or relax in a cozy cafe.

These narrow, other-worldly cobbled streets are the epitome of the Mediterranean with the majority of buildings reflecting a stunning blend of Greek, Ottoman, and traditional Turkish influences. It makes for wonderfully picturesque backdrop for photos to capture on a summer holiday. 

As you explore the Old Town, you’ll notice how the streets are lined with a lovely selection of local shops selling handmade jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs, and even small markets where you can haggle for sweet treats and spices.

In the evening, the once quiet streets become a buzzing center point of the city. This is when the best atmosphere for Marmaris’ Old Town can be found, once people have returned from lazying around on the beach, freshened up, and ready to roam the quaint streets in search of some fresh seafood and sip on some tasty cocktails. 

3. Marvel at the Yachts at Marmaris Marina

If you’re looking for things to do in Marmaris at night, then be sure to take an evening stroll around Marmaris Marina and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in the South of France.

The luscious tree-covered green mountains nestled in front of a deep orange sunset create a picturesque scene, and a super-impressive display of luxury yachts and boats docked up showcase why this beautiful region of Turkey is a popular favorite amongst the wealthy.

Once you’ve finished dreaming about what you will do with your lottery winnings, you can take a break at one of the many waterfront cafes and restaurants that line the Marina.

Sip on a refreshing Turkish Tea during the day, or sink an Efes or two of an evening, all whilst taking in the Marina’s unique atmosphere.

As well as treating yourself to a tasty meal or some drinks, the Marina also serves as one of the main hubs for various boat trips and excursions where you can book yourself onto a day cruise for the following day.

4. Relax on the Beaches of Marmaris

It’s not a holiday to Marmaris without spending a few days relaxing on the golden sands. There are many beaches in Marmaris and its surrounding areas, but if you want to find the most beautiful, you should opt for a day trip to Cleopatra Beach on Sedir Island.

Admittedly, Marmaris’s beaches aren’t the most picturesque beaches in the world, or in Turkey for that matter, but they are still incredibly popular during the summer months and you’d be crazy not to indulge in some sun, sea, and sand when you’re there. 

Marmaris Beach is the closest to the town center, and as a result, is heaving pretty much for the entirety of summer. The sand is soft, and the waters are clear, though you will be hard-pressed to find a decent spot any time after 11 am.

If you’d like a beach that is a little more idyllic yet still close to Marmaris, then Icmeler Beach is a great choice. Set within a relatively small bay, Icmeler Beach is a hub for water sports and makes for a great day out from Marmaris itself.

Jump on a jet ski and ride the waves, gather up the troops and head out on a banana boat, or even splash the cash and parasail through the deep blue skies with unbelievable views of the beach down below. 

5. Take A Dalyan River Cruise

If you’ve explored pretty much all of what Marmaris town has to offer, then why not jump on a day trip along the Dalyan River? It’s a superb way to see a lesser-visited part of the Dalyan region and you’ll see some incredible sights along the way.

The Dalyan River is a beautiful and quiet reed-lined river that provides a unique opportunity to witness several ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs. These tombs date back hundreds of years and are the final resting place of Kings and Queens of the Lycian era, and showcase the incredible workmanship of the ancient civilizations here. 

After sailing past the rock tombs, you’ll be taken to Dalyan’s iconic mud baths where you’ll be able to indulge in an incredibly therapeutic experience – covering yourself in mineral-rich mud and then letting it harden on your skin. Once the healing properties of the mud have worked their magic, take a dip into the warm thermal springs to wash away the mud and feel how soft your skin has become. 

Following the mud baths, you’ll come across Iztuzu Beach, also known as Turtle Beach, because it’s a significant breeding ground for loggerhead turtles, which sometimes make an appearance by the boats if the captain throws some squid into the waters – this would arguably be the highlight of any trip along the Dalyan River, but it’s not guaranteed. We saw one for all of three seconds and it didn’t come back for another bite.

Most of the Dalyan River cruises also include a lunch on the boat or at one of the riverside restaurants where you’ll be able to enjoy a traditional Turkish meal with your new friends, savouring the delights of fresh seafood.

6. Go On A Day Trip to Rhodes, Greece

If you want to get out of Marmaris for the day, then why not head out of the country altogether and go on a day trip to the Greek island of Rhodes? Marmaris’s proximity to the island makes this entirely possible within a day. 

The best way to visit Rhodes for the day is on a day tour, since they can whisk you around the highlights of the island and take you back to your hotel after.

Your adventure begins by being picked up from your hotel and then enjoy the scenic ferry journey across the Aegean, relaxing on the deck and enjoying the sea breeze. Upon arriving in Rhodes, you’ll usually have around six hours of exploration time before it’s time to head back, which is plenty of time to see the main sights. 

Rhodes’ medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should be the first thing on your itinerary. The Palace of the Grand Master is up next, serving as the residence of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Its medieval architecture is incredibly unique and offers panoramic views from the palace grounds. 

For a spot of lunch, indulge in one of the many Greek tavernas that line the cobbled streets and sample the unique dishes of the region like moussaka or souvlaki. Mandraki Harbor is also a unique stopping point on any trip to Rhodes, with its iconic windmills and the Fort of St. Nicholas an imposing building of the island. 

Before it’s time to return back to your ferry, shop for souvenirs to surprise those back home with something unique and unexpectedly Greek. On your return journey, you’ll be able to witness the gorgeous sunset dip beyond the Aegean which makes for the cherry on the cake of a busy but memorable day trip from Marmaris. 

7. Splash Around Atlantis Water Park

If you’re looking for things to do in Marmaris with the kids, then a visit to Marmaris Atlantis Water Park would make for an excellent, fun-filled day out. It’s the largest water park in the city and features a wide selection of thrilling water slides, a wave pool, soft play areas for the younger ones, and even a mini golf course. 

The water park is only open during the summer months from the beginning of May right through to the end of October. If you’re visiting Marmaris and haven’t rented a car, don’t worry, the water park also offers visitors free shuttle service to and from your hotel.

It’s worth noting that the slides close for 30 minutes from 1pm – 1:30pm, but luckily, the water park is virtually located on a beautiful sandy beach which you also get access to while you wait for it to reopen.

It’s not an issue to leave for the beach and then come back into the park for more slides or even a bite to eat at one of the onsite restaurants. 

8. Marvel at Amos Ancient City

One of the most impressive historical sights local to the Marmaris region is the ancient city of Amos. Situated along the Bozburun Peninsula just a short 20km drive away from Marmaris center, Amos and its crumbling ruins date back to the Hellenistic period with the city thought to have been founded in the 6 th century BC by ancient Greek settlers. 

Being thousands of years old, the archeological site is just ruins, however, some are better preserved than others and provide a valuable insight into the city’s past.

The city walls are the most notable, along with a small amphitheater that would’ve been used for performances and events, a temple, and several towers and tombs. Following examination of several inscriptions found in the ancient city, it is believed that the early inhabitants of Amos had originated from the Greek island of Rhodes just a short boat ride away. 

Visitors can reach Amos by car from Turunc town or Marmaris which is a little further afield but still within a short driving distance. It’s free to enter the ruins however it is possible to get a knowledgeable guide who can provide you with expert information on the ancient city. 

9. Take A Day Trip to Ephesus

Perhaps one of Turkey’s most iconic landmarks is the Ancient City of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the Ancient Wonders of the World.

The city of Ephesus dates back to the 10th Century BC, where it was first settled by the Greeks and used as a port city known for its trading links.

Today, it’s one of the largest and best preserved archaeological sites in the country, and where you can marvel at some grand works of Greco-Roman architecture.

The Temple of Artemis, Library of Celsus, and nearby House of the Virgin Mary are notable landmarks in the complex worth seeing.

Visiting Ephesus from Marmaris is a full day activity, since the ruins are 190km away (2.5 hours drive by car), but fortunately the trip can be made easy by booking onto a day tour.

10. Go Scuba Diving

Diving is another popular thing to do in Marmaris and is one of the main reasons why people flock to this part of the Turkish coast.

With its stunning underwater caves, vibrant reefs, and intriguing shipwrecks, Marmaris has diving sites that have intrigued divers for many years.

One of the most popular diving sites is Baca Cave, also known as Chimney Cave, which is a sea cave that lies between 5-50 meters below the surface.

Another popular site is Kadirga Cove , where you’ll find the shipwreck of a sunken ship from the Hellenistic period.

The crystal-clear waters of Marmaris and the diverse array of marine life and underwater landmarks to explore make it one of the best destinations in Turkey to go diving.

Whether you’ve scuba dived before or it’s your first time, diving in Marmaris promises an immersive journey into the Mediterranean’s treasures.

11. Take A Buggy Safari

Looking for more adventurous things to do? Then perhaps a buggy safari would pump some adrenaline through your veins!

The buggy safari is not only an off-road experience for the adventurous and thrill seeking, but a bonding experience for you and your travel mates.

As you explore the lush landscapes of Marmaris from your 4×4 buggy, passing through pine forests and rivers, you’ll get to battle your mates in a water fight game! That’s right, they give you water pistols so you can turn your experience into a water fight.

What’s more is that you don’t need a driving license for this experience since you’ll be driving around inside a private area, and full instructions are given upon arrival.

If you’re looking for a fun way to kill a couple of hours, this is certainly up there as one of the most fun activities you can do in Marmaris.

12. Relax In A Turkish Bath

If you’re finding Marmaris to be overcrowded and chaotic, then you might want to experience some relaxation instead. A Turkish Bath is the ultimate way to wind down and rejuvenate your body – especially if you’re visiting in the winter.

If you’ve never had a Turkish Bath before, allow me to enlighten you. The Turkish Bath experience is a combination of massage, body scrub, steaming, and washing.

You begin by sitting in a steam room on a marble slab (like the one pictured above), where the steam opens your pours and cleanses your body.

After that, you will be scrubbed down by a natir with a corse mitten, and then massaged with foam on a hot slab. After you have been steamed and washed, you will be taken to a separate area for an oil massage to lock in the moisture.

The result is you feel relaxed, and incredibly clean.

13. Take A Boat Trip From Marmaris

Being a coastal destination, most of the attractions in Marmaris revolve around being on the water. A stroll along the promenade in the evening will show you just how many boat trips and excursions you can take – the choices can be overwhelming.

One of the most popular boat trips you can take is on the huge galleon pirate ships, in which 100+ people all gather on the huge boats and sail around the coves, beaches and islands.

We personally find these ships overwhelming, but some people really enjoy the lively atmosphere. They are known to play really loud music, encourage excessive drinking with an open bar, and are filled with people from all over the world, so you can meet with other travelers and share in the good times.

There are several companies offering boat trips, but they all visit the same destinations, usually secluded beaches and coves where you can go snorkeling and sun bathing on the beach.

The boat trips from Marmaris are a full day activity and include lunch (often a BBQ), and usually have a bar where you can buy soft drinks or alcoholic drinks.

They also include hotel pick up and drop off.

14. Take A Day Trip To Pamukkale

Another day trip you can take, and quite possibly the furthest day trip we would recommend, is to Pamukkale. This natural wonder, also known as Cotton Castle, is a unique phenomenon formed by mineral waters cascading over the white terraces.

The white terraces, complete with several bathing pools, have been a tourist attraction for centuries. Legend has it that people traveling the old Silk Road through the ancient city of Hierapolis(located at the top of the hill), used to bath in these mineral rich waters as they believed them to have healing properties.

Today you can still swim in the pools, as well as check out the ancient ruins of Hierapolis and its grand amphitheatre.

Pamukkale is located 203km away from Marmaris and takes around 2 hours 45 minutes to drive. We highly recommend you visit Pamukkale by day tour or hire a car and drive yourself, as it won’t be possible to visit for a day using public transport.

15. Head Over to Oludeniz & The Blue Lagoon

If you’re thinking the beaches in Marmaris aren’t really living up to your expectations, then I recommend you drive over to Oludeniz to see the world-famous Blue Lagoon .

This lagoon is famous for its bright, turquoise waters and picturesque scenery, backed by the Babadağ mountain which is known as being one of the highest paragliding jump points in the world.

The beach is a protected nature reserve and since it’s protected by a bay, the waters are calm and gentle, perfect for young kids to go swimming in or to explore on a peddle boat.

Though it’s a 139.9 km journey and takes about 2.5 hours to drive, it’s worth the effort. It’s one of the most photographed scenes in Turkey and features on the postcards you find in souvenir stores.

Marmaris is mostly known for its all-inclusive resort holidays, which fully focus on sun and sand. Beyond the beach, though, there are plenty of other things to do around this bustling vacation town.

Stunning Marmaris Bay sits just where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet and is speckled with islands and rimmed by dramatically rugged peninsulas. This makes Marmaris a popular base for yachting trips along the coast.

Back on land, the classical-era ruins of Kaunos and Knidos, the Greek island of Rhodes, and many smaller historic sites, are all within easy day tripping distance from town.

This makes it easy for summer sunseekers to mix some sightseeing into their beach vacations.

Marmaris made its tourism name due to its prime coastal position, fronting a beautiful harbor. Unsurprisingly then, the most popular way to experience the lush coastline scenery of Marmaris Bay is to take to the water.

There are plentiful boat tours to choose. With only a short time in town, one-day group tours aboard large boats cruise around the islands of Marmaris Bay, anchoring along the coast for swimming stops.

For many vacationers, though, Marmaris is purely a jumping-off point for a multi-day sailing trip on a gület (Turkish wooden yacht). '

The castle was used as the staging ground for Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent's Ottoman troops, when they recaptured the island of Rhodes.

Both Turunç Beach (20 kilometers southwest from Marmaris) and Içmeler Beach (10 kilometers southwest from Marmaris) have narrow, sandy strips that trail along sheltered bays. Thanks to the shallow shoreline, both offer safe swimming for little ones, making them great beach choices for families.

The beach areas offer full facilities for easygoing days of sun and sand. There are plenty of sun lounges with shades for rent, and restaurants and cafés line the shore.

Be aware, though, that both these beaches are extremely popular during the prime summer months of July and August. Beach space can be a bit of a squeeze.

The quickest way to access both beaches from Marmaris town is by water-taxis, which shuttle between Marmaris harbor and the beaches regularly throughout the day during the summer months. Otherwise, there are regular minibuses that putter between the beaches and the city.

The small town of Dalyan is 90 kilometers east by road from Marmaris. Riverboat cruises, along the winding Dalyan River, which rims the town, are the top activity while here.

The scenery along the river is dramatic, with the high cliff banks bearing ornate tomb facades cut into the rock. The tombs date from between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.

Boats either head downriver to Iztuzu Beach and out along the coastline or, for a longer tour, putter upriver to Köyceğiz Lake. The lake tours include a stop at the Sultaniye hot springs, where you can slather yourself with mineral-rich hot mud.

Plenty of tour operators in Marmaris offer Dalyan day trips (usually booked through your hotel), which include return transport to Dalyan, lunch, and the river cruise as the main activity of the tour.

For a highly scenic road trip, hire a car for a day to drive Turkey's Datça and Bozburun Peninsulas. Marmaris sits just east from these two peninsulas and is the perfect springboard to discover the rugged coastline scenery they both offer.

It's a 99-kilometer drive right to the tip of the Datça Peninsula, where the ruins of Knidos sit.

Along the way, stop off to explore the little village of Eski Datça, with its traditional whitewashed fishing houses and cobblestone lanes. A swim-stop at Kumluk Beach in Datça town is also a refreshing break on a hot, summer day.

The ruins of Ancient Knidos ramble along the peninsula point, sitting between olive groves and forested hills. The main focus is the Hellenistic theater , which fronts the shore, overlooking the sea. The site's other major monument is its Hellenistic temple.

The coastal views along the twisty section of road between Datça town and Knidos is enough of a reason to visit.

Bozburun Peninsula, just to the south, has snoozy villages, dramatically scenic coastline views, and more beaches for swim stops.

The mighty ruins of Ancient Kaunos lie on the opposite shore of the Dalyan River from Dalyan town (88 kilometers east if driving from Marmaris).

Once a major center of Carian culture, Kaunos dates back to 9th century BC, but its heyday began around 400 BC, when its position on the border area between Ancient Lycia and Ancient Caria caused it to bloom into an important seaport and trading center.

The silting up of its ports led to the city's decline in importance, though the site was not fully abandoned until the 15th century.

There are excellent views over the surrounding countryside from the hilltop site. The remnants are scattered along the hill slope and include a large Roman baths area, a theater, a port agora, and the ruins of an acropolis.

Most Dalyan tours from Marmaris focus more on the river pursuits rather than the ruins of Kaunos, so if you want time to explore the ruins, this is best done by hiring a car and heading there independently.

If you arrive early in the morning, you can often get the entire site to yourself.

Protected as part of a nature park, Iztuzu Beach (95 kilometers southeast if driving from Marmaris) is one of Turkey's most famous strips of shore, with its white sand stretching for just under five kilometers.

Unlike many of the beaches in the Marmaris area, the nature park status means there's no major development here, which gives the shore a tranquil, natural feel.

As well as being a beautiful spot for a lazy day of simply swimming and sunbathing, the beach's fame comes from its protected status as a major nesting site for loggerhead turtles. Sections of the beach are out of bounds to sunbathers to help protect the turtle nests.

From Marmaris, plenty of tours head here for a day trip focused purely on beach time. Other trips offer a short stay on the beach before heading up the Dalyan River on a river cruise boat.

On the beach itself, one café offers refreshments and dining, and sun lounges and shades are available to rent.

Marmaris National Park covers most of the rocky, forested coastline that rims the blue waters of Marmaris Bay, stretching eastwards from the bustle of Marmaris town.

Many travelers opt to see this stretch of coast from aboard a yacht on a tour, but you can discover more of this area by heading into the park itself, inland. Jeep tours, ATV tours, and horse riding can all be arranged.

The forest here is mostly red pine, oak, and plane trees. A variety of wildlife live within the park, though the mammal you're most likely to see are wild goats. Bird-watchers should keep their eyes peeled for falcons and eagles.

The most popular destination in the park is Yildiz Adası (Yildiz Island; more often referred to as Paradise Island by tour operators). Despite the name, it's not actually not an island but rather a large peninsula that juts out prominently into Marmaris Bay.

As well as its yacht marina and some resorts in the tiny settlement of Adakoy, Yildiz Adası offers plenty of panoramic vistas. Hike uphill on the rough trail from the village for swooping views across the bay.

A little farther inland are the Nimara Caves, where archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation dating back 12,000 years.

Sedir Island (sometimes referred to as Cleopatra Island) sits in Gökova Bay, just offshore from Çamlı, 23 kilometers north from Marmaris. During summer, regular ferries shuttle between Camlı on the facing shore and the island throughout the day.

Most people are here to spend time on Cleopatra Beach, where the sand laps shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water. Sedir Island, though, is also home to the ruins of the ancient site of Kedrai, a Carian city that later came under control of Rhodes as part of the Rhodian Peraia.

If you're keen on walking and history, there's plenty to explore away from the beach, including a theater with sea views, an agora, two churches from the later Byzantine era, and some remnants of city walls.

The remains of the Sanctuary of Apollo temple at the island's eastern end are the largest section of ruin, so head here first if you're short on time.

There are around 50 dive sites accessible from Marmaris though, obviously, diving here in the Aegean Sea is not going to offer colorful coral reefs and tropical fish.

The most interesting sites here instead offer an opportunity to dive amid classical-era ruins. On all dives there's a good chance of seeing the area's protected loggerhead turtles.

Galleon Cove is one of the best dive sites for underwater photography with the rocky seabed festooned with amphorae, and the ruins of a Hellenistic-age ship that sunk here. It's one of the farthest dive sites from Marmaris, so it usually has to be specially requested by divers.

Aksu Cove sits just off Yildiz Adası (sometimes called Paradise Island) in Marmaris Bay, so it is a popular dive site. There are plenty of amphorae dating from the Byzantine era in this area.

Ince Cape, also near Yildiz Adası, is often visited by divers chiefly for the underwater topography and the variety of sponges and fish in the area.

The hilltop ruins of the theater of Amos overlook tiny Amos village and its beach, just four kilometers south of Turunç and 24 kilometers south of Marmaris.

The theater is the only major monument left from the site of Ancient Amos, which was once part of the Rhodian Peraia group of settlements (under the control of Rhodes) in the classical era.

The theater originally seated 1,300 spectators. Today, a partial section of the seating, as well as most of the orchestra below, has been preserved. The ruins sit surrounded by pine trees, and the site commands excellent views across Marmaris Bay, which are worth the short hike alone.

Marmaris is a vibrant seaside town in Turkey that offers a bit of everything for travelers.

Marmaris is one of my favorite places and is, without a doubt, worth visiting . In my guide below, you’ll see that this Turkish coastal town is noted for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and a range of activities.

It’s a place where you can chill out on the sand one day and then go exploring ancient ruins the next. And if you’re into nightlife, Marmaris has plenty of options to keep you entertained. It’s a great mix of relaxation, adventure, and culture all rolled into one.

Top Attractions & Best Things To Do In Marmaris

Located on what is known as the Turquoise Coast, Marmaris is lapped by the  beautiful blue waters of the Aegean .

There is a lot to see and do around this part of the country, although when the heat is on (and trust me, it’s hot during the summer), you’ll probably want to chill out around the pool or lay on the beach!

That’s perfectly fine, but it’s well worth knowing the best things to do in Marmaris and fantastic places to visit in Marmaris, so you can genuinely say that you’ve seen the best of this beautiful part of the country.

Marmaris and Icmeler run into one another and are less than 10 minutes apart. For that reason, Icmeler is often called Marmaris because it’s much smaller.

However, it’s worth pointing out that they are two different resorts if we are being technical! During your stay, zig-zag between the two because Icmeler is so beautiful and worth more than one visit.

Best Beaches & Natural Attractions In Marmaris

1. Marmaris Long Beach

Firstly, you can lay on the beach as much as you want and it’s a very long beach, literally known as Long Beach, so you’ll have plenty of space! Hotels, bars, and restaurants line the beachfront, and as long as you buy a  drink or something to eat , you can have a free sun-lounger and umbrella all day.

There is a free part of the beach further up towards the town center, although there are no umbrellas or sun-loungers, and it’s more of a throw-your-towel-down kind of deal! As far as the best beaches in Marmaris go, this one is a strong contender.

2. Marmaris National Park

Grab  your comfortable shoes and head to Marmaris National Park for those who like to be more active. This shady walking trail takes you up the hills and through the trees, with stunning views to boot.

It’s worth mentioning that there are no toilets and nowhere to get a drink , so make sure you’ve been before you go and take some water with you!

There is also a lookout point where you can see right over Marmaris – make sure your camera is charged for that one, as it’s pretty special. If you enjoy the natural scenery and outdoor activities, visiting Marmaris National Park is one of the top things to do in Marmaris.

3. Icmeler Beach

Marmaris Beach is excellent, but personally, I think Icmeler Beach is much prettier. It’s undeniably wider and sandier, too. If you’re visiting with children, Icmeler Beach is a better spot because there’s no main road behind it and more space to run.

The Dolmus bus will get you to Icmeler from Marmaris in around 20 minutes, one of the easiest Marmaris excursions from the town center. It takes that long because it constantly stops along the road to pick people up and drop them off! It’s cheap, at around 5 lira per person, and runs every 10 minutes in both directions. You can also get a taxi, which will cost you anywhere between 30 to 50 lira , depending on where you’re getting the cab.

Both Icmeler and Marmaris beaches have watersports to enjoy, such as parasailing, banana boats, flying fish, and jet skis.

4. Coastal Walk Between Marmaris & Icmeler

If you want to do something a little active but don’t want to venture too far, why not wear comfortable shoes and head off on a shady walk? There is a direct path along the coast between Marmaris and Icmeler, and it’s super-scenic.

There are some seriously posh hotels along this route, but their beaches and restaurants are reserved for guests only. For that reason, take some water with you, as it takes around an hour to complete the walk. Remember your camera!

5. Take A Dalyan River Cruise To Turtle Beach

Taking a Dalyan River Cruise offers a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. Typically departing from the charming town of Dalyan, these cruises navigate through reed-lined waterways to reveal stunning ancient ruins, like the rock-cut tombs of Kaunos, and lead you to a therapeutic mud bath known for healing properties.

The trip isn’t just about sightseeing; it’s an experience with opportunities to swim in the crystal-clear waters near Turtle Beach, a sanctuary for sea turtles. Costs vary, starting from around $20 per person, making it an affordable day out. Expect a serene journey with plenty of photo ops, a bit of history, and a chance to mingle with fellow travelers. Pack sunscreen, a hat, and your sense of adventure!

6. Watersports

Marmaris Beach is packed with watersport options for you to try, including parasailing. You can usually haggle the price down a little, especially if a few of you want to do a particular activity. 

7. Yacht Or Boat Trip

The small bays around Marmaris are worth a visit , and the best way to see them is via a boat trip. There are several options here – if you want to go for a day with the kids , then check out the pirate boat, a ship with huge sails, and all kinds of entertainment.

If that’s not your deal, many lazy day wooden boat trips serve drinks and lunch throughout the day and take you all around the bays with several swim stops. Most trips also stop for an hour in Turunc, a small town just beyond Icmeler, along the coast .

A relatively recent addition is the glass-bottomed boat trip. This very modern and large boat has a huge glass walkthrough tunnel underneath. There are several stops along the way, including a shipwreck .

8. Marmaris  Jeep Safari

One thing many people are surprised at when they visit Turkey is how green it is, even during the hottest summer months. The mountains and villages around Marmaris are so beautiful, and the best way to visit them while having some fun along the way is to book a jeep safari trip .

There is usually a fleet of jeeps that head out every single day during the peak months, and with around eight people in each, you bump along dirt tracks and regular roads, checking out the fantastic scenery and stopping at places of note along the way. Jesus Beach is a popular spot; a large sandbank leads out into the sea, allowing you to almost walk on water – hence the name!

You’ll also stop for lunch in a traditional village while heading back. One point to remember – there is often a water fight between the jeeps at some point during the day, so if you’re asked if you want to rent a Super-soaker, say ‘yes’ and defend yourself! 

9. Go Scuba Diving

One of the top activities in Marmaris is definitely scuba diving!

With its crystal-clear waters and rich marine life, it is a fantastic destination for scuba diving. Here, divers of all levels can explore an array of dive sites, including vibrant coral reefs, intriguing caves, and fascinating wrecks. 

Some popular spots include the Kadirga Lighthouse for its stunning underwater landscapes and the Baca Cave for its unique underwater topography.

Additionally, the area around Marmaris offers several diving schools and centers that provide courses and guided dives, making it accessible for beginners and experienced divers alike to discover the underwater treasures of the Aegean Sea.

10. Go Horse Riding

Horseback riding in Marmaris offers a unique way to explore its stunning landscapes, typically available throughout the year.

Prices vary, but you might expect to pay around $20-$50 for an experience, depending on the duration and route. As you trot or gallop, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife and the natural beauty of Marmaris. The Old Town is located below the castle and on one side of Bar Street. The quaint, cobbled, and winding lanes are full of brightly colored flowers, small boutique stores, coffee shops, and tea houses.

As you head to one side, you’ll find the “Bar Street,” which may be quiet in the daytime but certainly isn’t at night – this is where Marmaris’ nightclubs are located.

As you walk around the main streets and out the other side, you’ll reach the marina, an excellent place for a walk and a coffee stop. Check out the huge yachts moored up.

12. Marmaris Castle

If you love an Insta-worthy snap, be sure to head to Marmaris Castle and check out the fantastic views over the mountains, all the way over to Icmeler, and beyond. There is also a museum that explains the history of Marmaris and shows you a few of the artifacts found on site.

The castle is very well preserved and sits above Bar Street in Marmaris Old Town, making it one of the best Marmaris day trips away from the beach.

The good news is that getting inside at less than 10 lire per person is very cheap – a bargain!

13. Icmeler Old Village

Icmeler is connected to Marmaris by road, and you can even walk along the coastal path if you want to. You’ll find the Old Village, a  charming spot to wander for an hour just behind the main town. 

Here, you’ll find a more authentic way of life, with olive trees, flowers, greenery, and even goats! It’s super-quiet, too, which is perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle of tourist life. 

Shopping & Bazaars In Marmaris

If you love shopping and enjoy bargains, head to the bazaar in the center of Marmaris. It’s one of the most popular tourist activities to do in Marmaris.

You will need to haggle, and you can expect to be encouraged to enter every shop in this closed bazaar. However, it’s a great break from the sun, and you’ll also get some great bargains to take home with you .

15. Shop Some More

In Marmaris, you’ve got a treasure trove of shopping spots to explore, each offering its own unique vibe and variety of goods. We already spoke about the bazaar, but you can also find other places to spend your Lira.

Marmaris Shopping Center

For a more contemporary shopping experience, hit the Marmaris Shopping Center. It’s packed with a mix of local and global brands, offering everything from fashion to tech gadgets.

Netsel Marina Shopping Mall

Fancy a bit of luxury? The Netsel Marina Shopping Mall combines upscale shopping with dining and entertainment, all with a view of the marina.

By night, it’s the go-to place for nightlife, but by day, Bar Street offers cool shops and boutiques where you can pick up beachwear, souvenirs, and more.

Marmaris Market

For the weekly dose of local culture, the Marmaris Market (or Thursday Market) is unbeatable. Fresh produce, spices, and a variety of goods await in a lively setting.

Nightlife & Best Restaurants In Marmaris

16. try turkish food.

This is a must-do! 

Of course, Marmaris is a tourist place, so there is more than enough international cuisine around, but if you want to try something authentic, there are some hidden spots to go to. 

Cihan Ocakbasi in Siteler is the number one place for kebabs and meze . The bread is cooked fresh almost before you, and you can see all the kebabs cooking on the grill . It’s really reasonably priced, and the service is fantastic, with English-speaking servers.  Definitely go here!

You could also try casserole-style Turkish cuisine; in that case, there are several spots in Marmaris town center. These are often served in large buffet-style dishes; you choose what you want, and the waiter will bring it over to you. Try guvec and Turkish Moussaka, for sure. 

Finally, you have to have a traditional Turkish breakfast or kahvalti. There are several great spots in Marmaris, but Icmeler has the best.  Head to Liberty on the beachfront, and you can sit on the jetty with the sea all around you, surrounded by plates of delicious food. You’ll be full until dinner and even beyond!

17. Party In Marmaris

If you’re looking for nightlife and partying in Marmaris, there are several popular spots to consider. Here are some suggestions:

Located in the heart of Marmaris, Bar Street is known for its vibrant nightlife scene. This lively street is lined with bars, clubs, and discos, offering a wide variety of music genres and entertainment options.

Long Beach is a popular spot for daytime beach clubs that transform into buzzing party venues at night. Enjoy the beachside atmosphere, dance to the tunes of popular DJs, and sip cocktails while taking in the energetic ambiance.

Club Areena

Situated on the beachfront, Club Areena is one of the largest and most famous nightclubs in Marmaris. With its massive dance floor, multiple bars, and renowned DJs, it offers an unforgettable party experience.

Arena Disco

Located near the marina, Arena Disco is a modern and trendy nightclub where you can dance the night away to the latest hits. The club often hosts themed parties and events, keeping the atmosphere fresh and exciting.

Family & Leisure Activities In Marmaris

18. atlantis waterpark.

Located on the Marmaris beachfront, you’ll find the fun-filled Atlantis Waterpark.

This is a great day out for all the family and is full of slides, rides, splashing, and general fun. There is a restaurant on-site and plenty of room for sunbathing.

If you want to try other water parks , head to Aqua Dream Waterpark, located halfway up the mountain overlooking Marmaris. This has more slides and is a little quieter than Atlantis. The views are also pretty special!

Day Trips From Marmaris

If you’re in Marmaris, it would be a crime not to head over to Akyaka , which is about 20 minutes away and reachable by bus or taxi. It’s a chilled local beach town with that laid-back vibe that leaves you feeling like you’re floating. Thanks to the ever-present, cooling breeze, it’s also an excellent spot for kite surfing . 

The sea is always a little wavy but shallow for a long distance. The Azmak River also runs through Akyaka, which has the clearest water you’ll ever see in your life, and it’s freezing cold, no matter what the month of the year. You can go on a boat trip down the river and sit on the river banks and eat fish at one of the many restaurants . 

Be sure to pick up some local crafts to take home, too. 

Around 20 20-minute drive away from Marmaris Center, you’ll find somewhere that looks like it wouldn’t be out of place in the Caribbean. It’s stunning and set in a shady forest with white sand and sea so blue and transparent you’ll never really believe what you see. 

There is no transport to Incekum, so you’ll need to get a taxi there and back, but it’s more than worth it. You’ll pay a small entrance fee, and then you’ll board a tractor-pulled trailer (yes, really) that takes you down a forest road, with the impossible blue of the sea peeking between the lush, green trees. 

Once you arrive, you’ll want to jump into the sea immediately! 

A small café on site sells ice creams, toast, refreshments, etc., but you might want to take a small picnic with you as the food isn’t the best. 

Cleopatra Island

If you head in the same direction as Incekum but don’t go as far, you’ll come to the boat station, where boats head over to Cleopatra Island, about a 20-minute sailing route. It’s another trip that’s worth the taxi fare and entrance fee! 

This is where Marc Antony is said to have placed the perfect sand for Cleopatra to enjoy, and again, the water is so unbelievably clear. You can’t go onto the part where the famous sand is, as it’s roped off, and if you try to take any, the security team will be right over!

The beach you can visit is quite rocky, so you will need some sea shoes and keep an eye on the children, but once you’re in, it’s soft sand and blue sea all the way. There is also a set of old ruins behind the beach that you can explore; make sure you stay on the path and don’t venture into the high grass. 

Again, there is a small café on-site, but the food here is worse than in Incekum, so 100% take a picnic! 

Taxi Boat To Turunç

The next resort from Icmeler is Turunc, a small spot that’s very beautiful. This is where a lot of the boat trips stop for an hour, but you can get there on your own steam by taxi boat.

The wind as you head over will certainly cool you down, and once you arrive, you can eat fish in the local beachside restaurant, paddle in the sea, or sit and take in the beauty of the place. 

A neighborhood in Fethiye, Ölüdeniz is famous for its paragliding opportunities and panoramic views. The area is also home to the renowned Blue Lagoon, which provides visitors with a soothing sight and many Instagrammable pictures.

If you want to spend your day in an area full of natural beauty and relaxation, Fethiye should be your next destination . You can get to this pretty town on a day trip from Marmaris, seeing the stunning coastline and exploring the ancient Lycian rock tombs.

You don’t have to stay in Marmaris for your entire trip, and if you want to get out and explore, why not explore another country too? Yes, you can head to Rhodes for the day via boat . The boat takes around 1.5 hours, and you have the whole day to explore Rhodes Town before venturing back around 4 pm. It’s a long day; sometimes, the sea can be a little choppy, but it’s a fun day out.

Excursion desks around Marmaris sell the trip, but you can also head to the port office on the marina and book your tickets directly.

This trip is a great way to confuse your friends and family when you tag yourself on Facebook or Instagram – “but I thought you’d gone to Turkey?”

Where To Stay In Marmaris

There are countless hotels in Marmaris, ranging from apartments to upmarket 5-star options with spas. However, the most important thing to consider is where in Marmaris you choose to stay. Marmaris has a few neighborhoods – you need to know how far they are from the beach and the nightlife.

Siteler – Best For Beach Access: Ideal for first-time visitors. Offers a mix of high-class and cheaper hotels, great dining, and shopping options. However, it can be quite busy, and the beach is fairly narrow.

Siteler is the neighborhood closest to the mountain road out to Icmeler. You’ll find some large, all-inclusive hotels , shops, and many restaurants. It is an hour’s walk from Siteler down to the Old Town, but you can get the Dolmus bus, which runs every few minutes there and back. The beach runs the entire length of the area, so you’re never far from the beach by choosing to stay in Siteler.

Recommended Hotel: TUI Blu Grand Azur

Armutalan – Best For NightlifeArmutalan sits behind the main beach center, and you must walk to the beach every day. Some hotels are further away and are not walkable during the summer. However, Armutalan has some fantastic restaurants and nightlife, so you might not need to venture too far during the evening.

Great for budget travelers, offering a relaxed vibe and good nightlife, but it’s farther from the beach.

Recommended Hotel: Club Aida

When To Go To Marmaris Türkiye

Okay, first things first.  Let’s address the weather because depending upon when you’re visiting, this can severely affect your ability to get out and do a lot!

It is possible to visit Marmaris anytime, but most hotels, bars, and restaurants are closed during winter (between November and early April). However, things start to open up in early April, and you’ll find that the town becomes progressively busier from there. From June to September , Marmaris and neighboring Icmeler are very busy indeed.

During summer’s peak, temperatures hit 40 degrees, which is not unusual. Evenings can also be sweltering, so you need air conditioning – a fan just won’t cut it!

If you want to head out and explore, and you’re not a fan of lying on a beach much of the time , you will probably be better off visiting in May or June and September to October. During those months, temperatures are still hot but a little more bearable!

However, if the heat doesn’t bother you, grab a hat , your favorite water bottle , and some high SPF, and away you go!

How To Get To Marmaris, Turkey

The easiest way to reach Marmaris is to fly directly to Dalaman Airport and transfer from there. Dalaman is open for direct flights during summer and connects to most European cities. Outside, you’ll need to fly to Istanbul and then take a domestic flight to Dalaman, which takes about 1 hour.

The transfer from the airport to Marmaris varies depending on your chosen method. If you hire a car , you’ll get there between 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. If you opt for a private transfer , i.e., only you, you’ll get there in 1 hour 30 minutes.

If you choose a shuttle, you’re looking at anything between 2-3 hours. The reason is that the shuttle must wait for several passengers before it can leave, which can often take a while with luggage and people deciding to check out duty-free.

In addition, the shuttle stops at a service station along the way for around 15 minutes. The shuttle is cheaper, but it’s certainly the long way!

The other alternative is to take the Havas bus, which costs around 20 lira and leaves the airport according to the domestic flight schedule . The bus takes 1 hour 30 minutes and will drop you at Marmaris Otogar (bus station). From there you can jump in a taxi to your hotel.

Now you see why Marmaris is famous and a fantastic spot for a summer break – make sure it’s on your visit list!

1. Enjoy A Full-Day Cruise On A Boat From Marmaris To Dalyan

Marmaris being near the sea, boat cruises are very popular. The Marmaris boat trip is usually a full board — lunch is provided, great music is played and stopovers are made so you can swim in the sea and the views from the boat cruise are absolutely amazing. Here is a brief of the thing you can expect to do while on a full-day cruise.

 Swimming in the clear blue waters of the sea and sunbathing.

Then in the small boats, you head to the turtles’ beach . It is called the turtles’ beach because of the turtles that are always at this beach around June/July every year.

View the rock-cut tombs of the ancient Kings as you cruise on a small boat on the Dalyan river. The view is amazing and the stories behind the Tombs as told by the tour guides are fascinating to hear.

Enjoy the mud bath . (ignore the smell and enjoy the bath). It might sound weird but yes, you literally bathe in mud. You might be thinking it is a crazy idea but actually many people pay to do this. It is one of the fun and unusual things to do in Marmaris. The mud is usually warm and perfect for the skin – your skin is left glowing after the mud bath. It is also believed that after the mud bath, your life is prolonged for 5 more years. (I mean who doesn’t want 5 more years added to their lives!)

Swim in a thermal pool . The thermal pool is located where the mud bath is. So after enjoying the mud bath, clean up and hop into the thermal swimming pool. It is such a relaxing experience and one of the cool Marmaris activities.

2. Visit The Marmaris Castle

Unlike  Istanbul  which is full of historical places and  Unesco sites , Marmaris has a few of them and Marmaris castle is one of the most important historical centers in the area.

Dating back to 3000 BC, the Marmaris castle is one of the few castles in  Turkey  that also possesses a museum.

For Marmaris vacationers that want to experience a bit of history, the Marmaris castle is one of the places to visit in Marmaris.

The entrance fee to the castle and the archaeological museum is just 12 TL (Turkish Lira) and it opens every day from 8 30 am to 7 pm.

3. Visit The Nimara Cave

Previously used as a place of worship by the ancient residents of the town of Nimara, Nimara cave is located at the highest point of Heaven Island just outside of Marmaris town.

The cave also offers amazing views of Marmaris since it is at the highest point of Heaven Island.

Dating back to 3000 BC, the Nimara cave housed rituals and religious practices by the ancient people in honor of Goddess Armetis and Mother Goddes Leto who is believed to be the Mother of God Apollo.

I had an amazing and relaxing experience taking a Turkish bath that I wish I could do it again.

Some established hotels offer this service but if you want everything organized for you prior plus hotel pick up and drop off,  this is the package I recommend  as I was fully satisfied with their services.

It also comes with both foam and oil massage plus enjoying the sauna. The bath is an amazing feeling as an attendant washes you and massages your body for almost 20 minutes.

The experience is amazing and tickling as the fish poke your feet to remove the dead skin. By end of the pedicure, the feet are left smooth with no dead skin.

5. Go For A Marmaris Village Tour

The best way to learn about the locals of this gorgeous resort town plus their culture and traditions is by going for a village tour.

Marmaris may be one of the  popular destinations in Turkey  with a number of tourists, but it still also observes the enchanting traditions of this gorgeous nation.

With the village tour , you’ll be able to visit Bayir village where you’ll get a chance to taste locally made honey (trust me you don’t want to miss this), and later head to Turgut village where you’ll be hosted by locals in their homes to learn more about their way of life and you’ll be treated to a few delicacies – (yes Turkish people are very generous).

Please note that not all village tours are created equal and to have the experience you expect, it might depend on the tour you opt for. 

This village tour  is highly recommended as the tour guides are very knowledgeable, they explain everything well and are friendly which will make your village tour more enjoyable.

6. Visit The Turgut Waterfall (Selalesi)

The waterfall is located in the small village of Turgut. It might not be one of the fancy waterfalls to see but you can add it to your Marmaris itinerary as it is a beautiful place to relax and dive into the ice-cold water.

7. Visit Jesus Beach (Kizkumu Beach)

This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Marmaris which is approximately 36km southwest of Marmaris town. There is a walkway in between the sea that allows one to walk through the sea from one end to the other.

The tales as to why the beach was named Jesus beach are interesting but I will just share with you one that fascinated me the most.

The Tales Of Jesus Beach

The legends say that when the daughter of a Bybaboss King fell in love with a fisherman, it angered the king. So the King gave a directive to capture both of them and kill the fisherman.

When the Princess heard of the news that the soldiers were planning to kill the fisherman from the beach where they used to secretly meet, in hopes of saving the fisherman, the princess panicked and instead ran into the sea.

And as soon as she had stepped into the sea, a miracle happened. A walkway in the form of sand was made for her and the fisherman to walk through and later covered with water just behind them so that they are not followed by the soldiers.

When the soldiers realized that they couldn’t catch them, one of them aimed an arrow at the fisherman but accidentally hit the princess who bled and died. Her blood was spilled and that part of the sea became red instantly.

8. Explore The Grand Bazaar

Aside from the biggest Grand Bazaar in  Istanbul  that you might have explored or at least heard of since it’s the oldest and biggest covered market in Europe, Marmaris also has a Grand bazaar with countless shops selling anything you can think of.

The grand bazaar in Marmaris is the perfect place to buy souvenirs from the famous Turkish spices, the delicious Turkish delight to other handcrafted Turkish items.

9. Spend The Day At The Beach

Marmaris is just located on the banks of the sea and is highly endowed with many beaches.

A day at the beach is a perfect way to relax and take in the cool breeze, swim away and sunbathe.

One of the beaches to go to is Icmeler Beach, which not only has stunning views of the mountains but is also a great place to go fishing.

10. Watch the Dancing fountain of Marmaris

What seems like a normal fountain during the day transforms into a sightseeing adventure at night.

Every day around 8 30 pm, the show begins with the fountain splashing water in different colors, different kinds of music being played in the background, and people from all walks of life dancing and others taking videos and photos.

What might seem like a kid’s show has transformed to be one of the major tourist attractions in Marmaris for people of all ages and the best way to enjoy the Marmaris nightlife.

This is a must-see sight in Marmaris as it is the best water show in town. To think that I almost missed it since I just stumbled upon it by accident.

11. Watch The Sunrise

Watching the sunrise over the sea is everything. I literally woke up 3 times in the night not to miss the beautiful sunrise of Marmaris.

First, at 3 am, 4 am and 5 am. I finally captured this amazing shot at 5 30 am. (the sun was rising at 5 30 am during the month of June).

12. Walk Around Marmaris Town And Play Tourist

Marmaris is a fun city to walk around and play tourist in as there are so many sculptures within the town. Enjoy the beauty of this amazing town and do some window shopping.

13. Drive A Go Kart

This is a fun and thrilling activity more so if you don’t know how to drive a car but want to have some adrenalin kick in.

There are a few places in Marmaris that offer this activity. If you want to go for it, you can  book it in advance from here .

The fee includes an instructor to help you stay on track. (I am bad at driving and I was able to actually enjoy it without crushing into anyone – so if I did it, you too can!).

14. Visit The Mustafa Kemal Ataturk Monument In Marmaris City Center

Ataturk was a Turkish field marshal and the founder of the Republic of Turkey who became the first Turkish president in 1923 until when he died in 1938.

He played a huge role in rebuilding Turkey into a modern nation and was rewarded with the surname  Ataturk  by the Turkish parliament in 1934 which means “Father of the Turks”.

To this day, the Ataturk monument has remained a big tourist attraction in Marmaris in honor of the huge role Ataturk played in reforming Turkey.

15. Visit The Marmaris Marina

Take a stroll around the Marmaris Marina and get a glimpse of different types of cool and beautiful yachts docked along the pier.

The marina also has a number of cool restaurants with live music performances making it a perfect place to sit back and relax while enjoying the amazing Turkish entertainment.

General Travel Tips For Visiting Marmaris

How to get to marmaris.

Most travelers first visit Istanbul before heading to Marmaris. So if you’re already in Istanbul, this is how you can get to Marmaris.

From Istanbul, you can either take a 9-hour bus to Marmaris or fly from Istanbul to Dalaman airport.

There are a number of airlines operating this route from Turkish airlines, Pegasus airlines, and many others.

From Dalam airport, you can take another 1-hour bus to Marmaris bus station where you then take a taxi directly to your hotel. Alternatively, you can arrange for this private airport pick-up from Dalaman airport to your hotel . 

If your gateway to Turkey is Marmaris first, then you can still fly directly to Dalaman airport as it’s an international airport. From the airport, follow what I’ve explained above to get to your Marmaris hotel.

What To Wear In Marmaris?

There is literally no restriction when it comes to what to wear in Marmaris. Just wear what you will be comfortable in.

Whether pants, shorts, tank tops, or dresses – you name it, pretty much everything is acceptable in Marmaris since it’s a beach town. You can also shop some of my Amazon picks below.

What To Pack For Marmaris

Since most people come to Marmaris for a summer holiday, a packing list for Marmaris would include literally everything you would pack for a beach getaway. So here are some of the Marmaris essentials that you shouldn’t forget to pack.

Marmaris is all about hitting the beach and participating in countless water activities. Even when heading for a Turkish bath, you’ll still need to be in a swimsuit.

Amazon has a couple of highly-rated swimsuits which you can  buy from here for the ladies  and some  cool beach shorts for men from here .

No one wants to have a bad sunburn after an amazing time at the beach. So before you head to Marmaris, don’t forget to buy sunscreen.

The best sunscreen is one that has an SPF of more than 30. If you currently don’t have one, you can  purchase it from here .

A Universal Adapter

Electric sockets differ from country to country and Marmaris is no exception, so instead of buying an adapter specifically for Turkey, I’d suggest  buying this universal adapter  so that you can use it in whichever place you go to.

Beach Sandals

No beach vacay is complete without the beach sandals. I find  these ones  really comfortable.

They are just a few bucks on Amazon but the quality is much better compared to the price.

Water Shoes

If you plan on going snorkeling, don’t forget to pack  these water shoes  before you go to Marmaris.

These days with our phones in our hands literally all the time, you can’t guarantee how long the battery will take you.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Marmaris

The best time to visit Marmaris is during the hot temperatures since it is a resort beach town for enjoying the sun.

July and August are the hottest months averaging 28 degrees Celcius and can go as high as 42 with the longest hours of sunshine.

Since all Marmaris holiday-makers are all about taking advantage of the sun, these months are the high peak of Marmaris with tourists everywhere.

If you don’t mind the crowd, then July and August are the best months to visit Marmaris for maximum tanning.

If you still want to enjoy all that except the crowds, then June and September (late spring and early fall) is the best time to visit Marmaris.

Generally, the temperatures drop a little bit compared to those in summer and the number of tourists all reduce a bit.

Marmaris is a port and beach resort in Lycia , along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. (The boundary of the Mediterranean with the Aegean is generally taken as the Datça peninsula just west.) The town straggles south to run into İçmeler, then the road crosses the mountains to Turunç. This extended township had a population of 95,851 in 2020; this more than doubles in tourist season.

Marmaris is part of the administrative province of Muğla . Public services such as local buses may be listed as if based in Muğla, and if your bag is stolen or you have an accident, that is where the police report will site the incident.

Understand [ edit ]

In antiquity this place was known as Physkos (Φύσκος to its Hellenistic inhabitants). It has a good natural harbour but is hemmed in by mountains, lacking a hinterland, so it never became a major port. Its hills were quarried for marble, hence "Marmaris", though never on the scale of the Marmara Islands closer to wealthy customers in Constantinople. Its invaders (Persians, Alexander the Great, Crusaders then Ottomans) made sure to keep the castle in good repair, but it was the port where you assembled your fleet and sailed on, rather than storming inland. Süleyman the Magnificent did so in preparation for his 1522 assault on Rhodes, a victory which ensured Ottoman control of the East Mediterranean. Horatio Nelson likewise was here in 1798, and Keith and Abercromby in 1801, before sailing on to eject Napoleon Bonaparte's troops from Egypt and the Levant, and tighten Britain's grip on that region.

In peacetime the town remained a small, sleepy commercial and fishing port. It was flattened by the double earthquake of 1957, with only the castle left standing. From the 1980s tourism developed along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts of Turkey, and in 1989 Dalaman airport was upgraded. That put Marmaris within a 90 minute coach transfer, hotels were built over every available space, and the present sprawling resort appeared.

By plane [ edit ]

Dalaman airport is 100 km east of Marmaris. Most arrivals are holidaymakers on West European package flights, and are bussed straight to their hotels. Havaş shuttle bus meets domestic flights, which are every couple of hours from Istanbul IST / SAW and from Ankara. This bus takes 90 min from the airport via Dalaman town, Ortaca, Köyceğiz and Gökova, for a fare in 2023 of 110 TL. The airport also has taxis, private transfer companies and car rental.

By bus [ edit ]

Buses from Istanbul take 10-12 hours via Gebze , Izmir and Muğla for a fare in 2023 of 900 TL. Both Pamukkale and Flixbus have buses every two or three hours round the clock, and Metro Turizm run twice a day. At Istanbul, don't be getting aboard that surprisingly cheap quick bus to Marmara Ereğlisi , which will take you to a beach resort but not the one you expected. Buses from Ankara to Marmaris take 12 hours, from Antalya seven, and from Izmir three.

By road [ edit ]

From Istanbul follow O-5 and O-7 (toll) south to Izmir, then Highway E87 / D550 through Aydın and Muğla to Akyaka. The last stretch is on D400 into Marmaris.

By boat [ edit ]

Foot-passenger ferries from Rhodes sail April-Oct, taking an hour. Two companies compete on the route, Feribot Lines and Yeşil Marmaris Lines , with similar fares - in 2023 an adult single is €40. They each have a morning and afternoon sailing so a day trip either way is possible most days, giving you six hours on the other side. There's no car ferry or winter service. Travel via Rhodes for Symi, which has no direct ferry from Turkey.

36.8489 28.282 2 Marmaris ferry terminal is east side of the marina. Taxis await ferries, but it's only 1 km to walk to the castle and downtown via the harbour footbridge. Vehicles have to go around a much longer route, so the taxi driver will wax lyrical about the hike he's spared you.

With your own boat, Marmaris is a Port of Entry into Turkey, so if you arrive from Greek waters you can clear immigration and customs here. Expect quite some uphills and headwinds if trying to do the check-in without an agent as a middleman (as of 2024, it's probably not even possible).

Get around [ edit ]

Dolmuş minibuses are the main way to get around: they ply the city main streets and link the outlying suburbs and villages. You pay a flat fare, which in 2022 within Marmaris was 5 TL (these dolmuşes have a green band across them), and to İçmeler (orange band) was 7 TL.

This site has been fortified for thousands of years but the castle you see now was built by Suleiman the Magnificent in preparation for his 1522 assault on Rhodes. • The lighthouse south of the castle is just a harbour light, atop a dinky tower that looks like a sentry box.
• Hafsa Sultan Kervansaray just north of the castle dates from 1545, but it's closed and tumbledown.
• 36.8531 28.2708 2 Atatürk's Statue is the focal point of town, junction of Atatürk Cd along the beachfront with Ulusal Egemenlik Cd through downtown. He looks like he's clinging on to his cap lest the breeze whips it away.
• 36.851 28.2851 3 Günnücek is the easiest entry point to Marmaris National Park, a rugged tract of pine forests with hiking trails.

• 36.7921 28.2843 5 Phosphorus Cave is Marmaris' equivalent to the Blue Grotto of Capri , a sea cave flooded by ethereal blue light. It's too narrow for boats to enter; you may be able to swim in, but beware sharp rocks above, alongside and below. It's on the south tip of Cennet Island, with no land access. That hasn't prevented idiots from spray-painting the interior.
• 36.992 28.203 6 Sedir Island or Cleopatra Island is in the Gulf of Gökova, reached by boat from Çamlı (off D-400 north of Marmaris) or from Akyaka. Here are the overgrown ruins of Kedrai, with an amphitheatre, sanctuary to Apollo, cistern and city walls. A boardwalk leads through the site and past a small and a large church from the Byzantine era. The cove on the northwest shore is Cleopatra Beach, a gleaming golden strand. This beach is made of ooids, tiny pearl-like limestone spheres, and the Cleopatra legend got started because similar beaches are found in Egypt - Marcus Antonius supposedly imported one such to keep her sweet. But there are several such beaches around Turkey, as well as in the Persian Gulf, Bahamas and elsewhere. The beach material is under strict protection.
• Orata is the smaller island just north with a few similar ruins.

• The beach is sandy though narrow. The strip west of downtown has free public access.
• Water parks are Aqua Dream on Fatih Sultan Mehmet Cd, and Marmaris Atlantis on 203rd Sk. Star has closed down.
• Boat trips circle the bay, usually anti-clockwise via Turunç, Phosphorous Cave, and Cennet island beach.
• Scuba diving centres include Marmaris , Professional Diving Centre and Deep Diving School, all clustered round the harbour.
• The amphitheatre is a modern reconstruction. It remains closed in 2023.
• Jeep safaris explore the Bozburun and Datça peninsulas.
• Hamams - traditional Turkish baths - are in half-a-dozen locations in town, plus the spa hotels offer their own.

Buy [ edit ]

• Grand Bazaar is a covered market along 59th Sk, starting 50 m inland from Atatürk's Statue. It's a modern alley, practical rather than scenic, with most vendors open daily 08:00-01:00.
• Supermarkets: lots of little convenience stores, Migros is the main chain. Somewhat larger is Carrefour on 142nd Sk, open daily 08:00-22:00.
• Pharmacies cluster along Ulusal Egemenlik Cd the main downtown street, and are dotted along the beach strip.
• Reptiles is a fitting name for those who try to sell tortoises and other animals to tourists. The poor creatures will die on your way home of course, but that won't spare you a hefty fine for importing endangered species.

Eat [ edit ]

• Pine honey ( çam balı ) is a local specialty, from the forests around Marmaris. It's darker and more viscous than regular flower honeys, and has woody, resinous undertones. Check your country's import rules before taking any food product home - many prohibit fresh food including honey.

Drink [ edit ]

• Beachfront , or rather the main street a block back, has a string of pubs, including two Irish. They also stock the standard Turkish and European beers.
• Bar street is the nickname for Barbaros Cd along the waterfront in the old town. You'll soon figure out why.
• Vineyard: Asarcık is on the Bozburun Peninsula. Most Turkish wine comes from further north.

Sleep [ edit ]

Rates given here are those quoted for independent travellers, but most visitors are on package deals, effectively paying the same room rate but getting a free return flight from Europe. There are some remarkable bargains but you get what you pay for. Rooms with air-con carry a price premium so consider the season when you'll be visiting. Other common gripes are stiff charges to use the room safe, and for Wifi that is ponderously slow, and samey "all-inclusive" meals that impel you out to the town restaurants.

In theory there are by-laws against playing loud music, but they don't apply to hotels, which crank up the volume to ensure every guest enjoys the thumping beat at 1 am. The thinness of the walls also indicates why earthquakes are so destructive in Turkey.

Situated in the heart of Mugla province in Turkey, Marmaris Castle, or Marmaris Kalesi, is a majestic 16th-century castle and is one of the few castle museums in Turkey. When to visit Marmaris

Most people consider the period from May to September as the ideal time to visit Marmaris. Marmaris is very busy from July to August so choose early or late in the season for slightly cooler days and less crowded beaches.

How to Get to Marmaris

The closest international airport is at Dalaman. Take a shuttle bus from the airport to Marmaris for TL25.

There are no trains to Marmaris at present. The closest railway station is at Aydin for those traveling from Izmir.

Turkey has good roads and the 502 mile drive from Istanbul to Marmaris via the E881 toll road takes 8 to 9 hours.

If you're flying to Istanbul initially, you can travel on to Marmaris by bus for just TL75.
