6 Ways to Experience the New River Gorge Bridge

new river bridge tour

The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville is an acclaimed landmark of Southern West Virginia and home to West Virginia’s largest single-day festival: Bridge Day. Although the recent cancellation of Bridge Day 2021 was disappointing, the safety of our visitors and communities is more important. And luckily, we all can still enjoy the bridge from new perspectives while keeping ourselves and others safe.

Bridge Walk

The next best thing to walking across the bridge on Bridge Day is to walk the catwalk beneath it during a Bridge Walk tour! See the breathtaking landscape and incomparable views of the Gorge from 851 feet above the New River. The catwalk is over a mile long and 24 inches wide with a substantial railing. Before beginning the tour, guests are securely fastened onto a safety cable. The tours last about two to three hours in length and move at a leisurely pace — so there’s plenty of opportunities for photos! To book a trip and learn about the additional safety precautions implemented by Bridge Walk go to their website .

Check out the view from below on a whitewater rafting trip down the New River. The New River is one of the world’s oldest rivers and has exhilarating rapids that will delight both beginners and experienced rafters. End your trip at the Fayette Station rapid and view the iconic bridge from the water. Schedule a trip with one of our reputable outfitters for an opportunity to experience this unique perspective.

Biplane Ride

Get a bird’s-eye view of the New River Gorge Bridge during a scenic flight in a historic World War II biplane with Wild Blue Adventure Company ! This 20-minute trip lets you see area features like the New River, Endless Wall trail, Hawks Nest State Park and Dam like never before. You can even request to add aerobatics like barrel rolls, cravats, hammerheads and s-turns to your flight if you’re feeling more adventurous! Find flight details on the company’s website .

Get a dose of nature and catch beautiful glimpses of the bridge during a hike in the New River Gorge. The popular Long Point trail offers a picturesque view of the bridge from a rock outcrop at the end, while Endless Wall , another favorite spot, allows you to see the bridge from many different points along the gorge. Looking for a less crowded trail? Head to the accurately named Bridge Trail. This trek takes you directly under the bridge for one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.

Jet Boat Trip

Cruise down the New River on an exciting jet boat ride with New River Jet Boats and get picture-perfect views from the bottom of the Gorge. After taking a scenic shuttle ride along Mill Creek from Hawks Nest State Park , you will then go on a jet boat ride upstream for a magnificent look at the New River Gorge Bridge. New River Jet Boats is opened on Thursday through Monday during the month of October.

Get the perfect shot of the New River Gorge Bridge from the Canyon Rim Overlook. Located at the Canyon Rim Visitor’s Center , there are two different vantage points available. The first is a panoramic view from the top overlook, and the second is an arch-level sight obtained from the lower overlook. Prefer to stay in your car? Take a scenic ride on Fayette Station Road, a winding one-way drive that crosses under the bridge. A water-level view of the bridge can be seen from the Fayette Station Bridge at the bottom of the Gorge, too!

While we have to wait until next year for Bridge Day 2022, we can still find unique ways to enjoy the New River Gorge Bridge! From the sky to the water, find the perfect place to view the well-known bridge, and tag us in your adventures using #visitwv on social media.

Bridge Walk

A different kind of catwalk.

Experience West Virginia’s most prominent landmark in a way few people ever do! 3,030 feet long and 876 feet above the New River, this icon is the longest single-span bridge in the Western Hemisphere and the third-highest in the United States. Underneath the four lanes of highway 19 and among the rust-red girders and beams is a lesser-known feature of the bridge: a two-foot-wide, grated-steel catwalk that runs the entire length of the bridge. And you can walk it!

Less than a five-minute drive from our main campus at Adventures on the Gorge, you’ll find our partner, Bridge Walk. Once you’ve checked in, your adventure will traverse various walking trails, decks, and viewpoints before reaching the underbelly of the bridge and its catwalk. Here, you’ll clip into your safety harness and walk over half a mile with a view of the New River hundreds of feet below you. There’s plenty of time to stop for pictures, sightseeing, and interesting points of history from your guide. Once on the other side, your shuttle bus will pick you up and return you to the starting point, where you can walk across the parking lot and visit the New River Gorge Visitor Center.

Schedule your Bridge Walk trip today!

What’s included.

Our adventure partner, Bridge Walk, LLC, will provide expert safety instruction and all the necessary safety gear, including harnesses. They’ll also share about the bridge’s history!

What to Wear and Bring

You’ll want to wear closed-toed shoes and dress for the weather forecast. Wind, rain, or snow may be coming at you from the sides or below (remember, you’ll be over 800 feet above the New River Gorge)!

Cameras and phones are allowed, but they must be secured to your person. Glasses must also be secured, and lanyards for clipping valuables are available for purchase at Bridge Walk. Leave gum, food, drinks, tobacco products, unsecured car keys, and anything else you might accidentally drop into the abyss back in your vehicle.

Where to Meet

Bridge Walk is owned and operated by Bridge Walk, LLC. They’re our partners, so you’ll begin your adventure at Bridge Walk’s headquarters, which is just across highway 19 from Adventures on the Gorge and walking distance from the New River Gorge National Park Visitor Center.

Your adventure will last 2-3 hours. Consider the Bridge Walk as a mild hike that stretches for almost a mile long.

Requirements and Limits

  • The minimum age for this adventure is eight years old, and participants must be over 48” tall. Weight limits may exist.
  • All participants should be able to walk at least two miles and be comfortable with moderate physical activity for three hours.
  • Those with medical conditions (including pregnancy) should consult with their physicians prior to participating in Bridge Walk.

Bridge Walk uses an extensive safety system. Everyone will be secured by harness to steel cables to ensure the safety of all guests.

What is Bridge Day?

Every third Saturday of October, route 19 over the New River Gorge Bridge is closed. BASE jumpers, rappelers, and ziplines from across the globe gather to have fun jumping and zipping from the bridge while thousands of spectators look on from the bridge railings. You can book Bridge Walk on this day, but spots are very limited. Be sure to reserve early so you can experience seeing parachute jumpers whiz past your position. It’s a one-in-a-lifetime experience!

Due to high traffic volume online booking is currently running slow. For booking help call (855) 379-8738 or see our Trip Planner .

Bridge Walk- New River Gorge Bridge - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Brave The Catwalk On West Virginia's New River Gorge Bridge Tour

Woman looking out over the New River Gorge Bridge

An impressive feat of American engineering and a stunning landmark of southern West Virginia, the New River Gorge Bridge blends practical infrastructure with structural art. While there's a few ways to view the steel arch bridge, a guided bridge walk offers visitors an up-close experience that reveals the New River Gorge Bridge's grandeur and architectural beauty. Of course, from 851 feet above the New River, you're also treated to incomparable views of the gorge below and surrounding landscape.

Located near Fayetteville, New River Gorge Bridge is about 58 miles southeast of Charleston, making it an easy day trip from West Virginia's capital. The bridge is the longest single-span steel bridge in the western hemisphere, and it's the third-highest steel bridge in the U.S.

After its completion in 1977, the bridge quickly became one of West Virginia's most popular landmarks. It's been featured on the state's commemorative quarters and remains as one of the most photographed places in the state.

While it's certainly something to behold, the massive structure is still a bridge, after all. If you're brave enough, walking across New River Gorge Bridge is an exhilarating, heart-pounding experience that rewards you with unbelievable views.

Take unbelievable landscape photos

To take a bridge walk, you'll need steel nerves comparable to the strength of the bridge's steel arches. Instead of actually walking across the bridge, a guided bridge walk involves walking across a narrow catwalk located underneath the bridge. The bad news is that the grated catwalk is only 24 inches wide. The good news is that the catwalk features substantial railings on each side. And to absolutely ensure the safety of brave bridge-walkers, you're also tethered to a safety harness, making it impossible to fall. That's also good news.

Once you're strapped in, you'll walk the entire 3,030 feet of the bridge at a leisurely pace. At 851 feet above the New River, a leisurely pace makes sense. That said, the entire bridge walk can take between two to three hours to complete, so participates will need to plan their schedules accordingly.

While walking across the New River Gorge Bridge, you'll learn interesting facts about the bridge and the New River Gorge National Park from your tour guide. Although the bridge walk is perhaps the best way to appreciate the bridge's beauty and size, it's not the only way.

Other unique ways to experience the bridge

If a bridge walk is a bit inconsistent with your attitude towards altitudes, then you may consider something a little more down to earth. There are a few hiking trails through the New River Gorge that offer awesome views of the bridge, including Long Point Trail and Bridge Trail.

For a splashier time, a whitewater rafting adventure down the New River is also an option, while the two vantage points from the Canyon Rim Visitor's Center provide great opportunities for photos. Other the hand, there's also an ideal option for those requiring a bit more adrenaline that a catwalk or photo opportunity can offer. Visit on Bridge Day.

Held on the third Saturday of October each year and commemorating the bridge's completion, Bridge Day is West Virginia's largest one-day festival. On this day, brave visitors can take a bridge walk, while fearless visitors enjoy the chance to zip line, rappel, and BASE jump from the New River Gorge Bridge.

While a number of participants from the general public can zip line, rappellers and BASE jumpers must be experience and selected to participate. And, of course, they'll also need to be brave.

What is more breathtaking than the New River Gorge ? Well, walking across it, of course!

In 2009, Bridge Walk was created from a collaboration with the National Park Service, West Virginia Division of Highways, and the partners that make up Bridge Walk, LLC. Using the existing catwalk underneath the New River Gorge Bridge, the company added a safety system with harnesses. Since then, more than 32,000 folks have crossed the 3,030-foot span— the longest of its kind in the western hemisphere.

A walk unlike any other

Two women standing on catwalk beneath New River Gorge Bridge, WV

Tours are leisurely, so you’ll have time to take in the stunning vistas. From your vantage point, the vast New River Gorge sprawls 876 feet below you in all directions. Look at distant rapids, sandstone cliffs, and forests as they disappear into the horizon. Falcons are a common sight, too.

Bridge Walk is open year round (Thanksgiving and Christmas Day excepted), so it’s worth returning as seasons change. Winter is especially lovely. Beards of ice grow on cliff faces, and snow dusts everything like sugar. There are special full moon tours, too— nocturnal trips lit only by silvery constellations.

Another great thing about Bridge Walk is accessibility. Tours are 1.25 miles long (including the short hike before and after the catwalk). You don’t have to be fit, either. Most of the tour happens on a flat platform. When you’re done crossing the bridge, a shuttle will return you to the visitors’ center.

Kids 8-15 must be accompanied by an adult, and they must be more than 48 inches high.

Bridge Walk also has holiday deals. No occasion is too minor, either. Daylight Saving Time, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day … visit the company site or Facebook Page for the latest discounts! You can also get an annual pass for unlimited tours.

The sky-high exhilaration doesn’t end with a Bridge Walk, either. Visit in October for the world’s biggest BASE jumping festival!

Bridge Walk Tour at New River Gorge National Park

The New River Gorge Bridge Walk Tour is fun, exciting, and provides a unique perspective of both the bridge and the gorge. Walking under a bridge on a 24-inch wide catwalk might not sound exciting at first. But, when the walk is under the longest single-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere and hovers over 850 feet above the New River, you can start to sense the excitement.

The New River Gorge Bridge

The New River Gorge Bridge, one of the most photographed places in West Virginia (and WV has more than its share of photogenic places), is a 3,030 foot, steel arch bridge that spans the scenic New River Gorge. Take this tour for a fun way to learn local history and to see the supporting structure of the famous bridge. See details below.

New River Gorge National Park

Bridge Walk Tour – Key Facts

With so many things to do at New River Gorge National Park, you may wonder why someone would pay for a tour that walks under a bridge. First, this is THE bridge. Next, if you have a tour guide as we did, you will learn the history of the bridge, the gorge, and the surrounding region which provides context as you experience the National Park, Finally, you get to walk about 850 feet about the new river!

Is this tour too scary? Well, you will be walking high above the river on a 24-inch wide catwalk. That being said, measures have been put in place to ensure your safety. The railing on the walkway extends over waist-high, you will be wearing a safety harness that is locked into a safety cable, and there is no unclipping and reclipping in of the safety line. While we did feel a vibration from the car and truck traffic overhead, the shaking was minimal.  For those with an intense fear of heights, this tour might not be the best choice, although we found it to be less scary than expected.

The view from under the New River Gorge Bridge.

Information about the tour

Cost: We paid $72 per person and booked the tour online at the Bridge Walk website .

Walk Length: The bridge is about a half-mile across. You will take a short walk from the Tour Building (see directions below) to an overlook for some fun facts and background from your tour guide. From the overlook, you will walk on a short path that leads under the bridge. The entire walk is under 3/4’s of a mile. Aside from a minor downhill trail to access the bridge walk and a short uphill walk to the bus after the tour, the bridge walk is flat.

Family Friendly: The Bridge Walk is a family-friendly activity. Children must be 8 years old and at least 48 inches tall to participate in the walking tour. The tour did take several hours as the tour guide stopped and talked a handful of times. About halfway across we were given the opportunity to sit down on the catwalk and let our feet hang over the edge.

Bride Walk Tour

More information about the tour

Other: There are restrooms around the back of the tour building.

Suggestion: We purchased an iPhone holder/lanyard at the tour office store for about $5. This was well worth the price as it secured my phone around my neck and we used it for river rafting later in our visit.

Bridge Walk Tour Location

The Bridge Walk Tour is located near the Canyon Rim Visitor Center inside New River Gorge National Park (southern West Virginia). See driving directions below.

Bridge Walk Tour Area Map

The Bridge Walk Tour office is located next to New River Gorge’s Canyon Rim Visitors Center in Lansing, WV. Their address is 57 County Rte 85/9, Lansing, WV 25862.

  • When traveling north on Rt, 19, make a right turn on 85/9 (Fayette Mine Rd.). You will make a left if traveling on Rt. 19 going south.
  • The Bridge Walk Tour office is on the left while the Canyon Rim Visitors Center is on the right.

The Bridge Walk is a unique experience

We arrived at the Bridge Walk Tour office about a half-hour prior to our 9 am tour. That gave us plenty of time to check in, sign waivers, visit the restroom, and meet our tour guide. Our guide was only 16 years old. She had first done the tour herself three years ago and has been guiding tours for 4 months. She was confident, knew the safety equipment, and was well versed in the history of the bridge. We mentioned later that she would be a good hire…for almost any job!

After our guide briefed us on the safety equipment and ensured that our harnesses were on correctly, we set off for a short walk to a viewing platform where we could see the bridge. We then descended to the catwalk under the bridge and were secured to the safety cable.

The catwalk on the Bridge Walk Tour

What was the Bridge Walk Tour like?

Once the tour began, our group walked at a casual pace. The guide stopped us a handful of times to talk to us. There was some noise from car/truck traffic above but it wasn’t too loud. We had a train that was transporting coal pass by underneath which was fun to see. While the catwalk is over 850 feet above the river, the experience was not as daunting as expected. Peering through the steel structure at the beautiful gorge in both directions was simply amazing.

The Long Point Trail viewpoint as seen from the New River Gorge Bridge.

One unexpected benefit of the tour was that we found our next hike for the day while on the Bridge Walk Tour. Our guide showed us the Long Point Trail overlook (see picture above) and mentioned that it was her favorite hike. That’s all we needed to hear. After the bridge tour, we drove straight to the Long Point Trail and had an amazing hike!

Click here for details, pictures, and a video of the Long Point Trail hike.

A new perspective of the New River Gorge Bridge

Looking up at the New River Gorge Bridge.

The Bridge Walk Tour gave us an entirely new perspective on the New River Gorge Bridge. Over the course of 3 days, we drove over the bridge, walked on the catwalk under the bridge, drove a car under the bridge on Fayette Station Rd., and viewed the bridge from the Long Point Trail and the Endless Wall Trail . Each of these vantage points was special, but if you want to get the full New River Gorge Bridge experience, then you definitely should sign up for the Bridge Walk!

Bridge Walk at the New River Gorge National Park is a cooperative effort of West Virginia Division of Highways, the National Park Service, and a company called Bridge Walk LLC.  You’ll meet with an official tour guide and then step into a harness as if you were doing a zip line. Once you step onto the catwalk, a lanyard hooks into a safety line that stretches the span of the bridge.

Unlike a zip line, the safety equipment becomes barely noticeable after just a few minutes on Bridge Walk. You can freely walk from end to end of the New River Gorge Bridge at a relaxed pace. Along the way, you’ll enjoy some incredible views and even the faint sounds of those tiny human beings on the ground shouting up at you.

Bridge Walk New River Gorge

The New River Gorge Bridge was completed in 1977 and weighs 88,000,000 pounds. Completed in sections – its heaviest part is 184,000 pounds.  It boasts a beautiful arch directly in the middle that spans nearly 1,700 feet. The length of the New River Gorge Bridge is 3,030 feet.

People come from all over the world to take the walk of a lifetime. Tour guide Doug Coleman told me that visitors from as far away as China have made the famous walk. Manager Benjy Simpson talked about the need to stay away from an amusement or theme park aspect for the experience. “It’s whatever someone wants it to be. Each person enjoys it for different reasons”

In addition to simply walking across the catwalk underneath the bridge, it’s an area tradition each fall to participate in a “Bridge Jump”. People can also rappel from the bridge at certain times of the year.

Bridge Walk in West Virginia

The small catwalk is just two feet in width, though it’s sturdy and solid. I never once felt unsafe during the experience. You don’t feel any swaying but you certainly feel the bounce as cars and trucks zoom by overhead. Not to mention the wind that can really whip through the sections of steel. The safety line above the Bridge Walk is actually the longest continuous safety system in the world.

A tour can last from 90 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the pace of your tour group. We were up there for about two hours. You can bring your own camera but beware. If you’re prone to dropping things, good luck getting your phone back if it falls off the bridge. You’ll need to sign a waiver and must be over 8 years old and 48 inches tall to participate in Bridge Walk.

The New River Gorge became a National Park in 2020, though travelers have been utilizing the area for decades as a place to enjoy the outdoors. Companies like Adventures On The Gorge offer other recreation activities like whitewater rafting and obstacle courses in the area.

Other Bridge Walk Fun Facts:

-Bridge Walk first opened in 2010.

-People have gotten engaged while on the bridge.

-The New River is the second oldest river in the world.

-Sometimes visible on tours – the Peregrine Falcon which is considered the fastest animal on the planet and can reach speeds of 260 miles an hour.

Fallout 76: How to Get to New River Gorge Bridge

Quick links, how to get to new river gorge bridge in fallout 76, how to cross new river gorge bridge in fallout 76.

The New River Gorge Bridge in Fallout 76 is massive and allows players to cross the river in the area. However, due to the nuclear disaster, most of the bridge has collapsed, making it difficult to cross and reach the other side. Though not initially apparent, there is a way you can get across.

If you're struggling to reach the bridge and get to the other side, this guide will show you exactly where you need to go. Accessing the secret area on the bridge can also reward you with some hidden treasures that you can't find anywhere else.

Fallout 76: How To Get The Railway Rifle

To get started on reaching the New River Gorge Bridge, you'll want to make your way to New River Gorge Bridge - East , which can be found west of Sutton. You can use the map image above to find it. From Sutton, you can just make your way onto the top of the bridge.

Then, on the left side of the bridge, you'll notice a small path leading to a fence with an open doorway. Head through here and then down the stairs to reach the bottom section of the bridge. There will be a few feral ghoul enemies down here, so make sure to defeat them before moving on. Just behind you, you'll also notice a locked door that requires pick locking skill 2 to open. When you open this up, you'll find:

  • Carl's note - reveals where the West Bridge key is (Camden Park)
  • Vault-tec Bobblehead
  • Material scraps for crafting

Fallout 76: Whitespring Refuge Location

Now, you'll be able to cross the bridge after reaching the scaffolding underneath. You'll eventually reach a spot where you can either continue through the scaffolding, or proceed up to the top of the bridge. Up on the top, you'll find a few Bloodbug enemies, and a couple of items on top of cars, including Wonderglue, Squirrel on a Stick, and more .

In the scaffolding underneath, there will be a few more feral ghouls and some hidden items. Heading off to the side, you'll find a body with some pre-war money. Continuing along the scaffolding, you'll spot a few more enemies and some hidden items on the side, as well as a feral ghoul holding a holotape which unlocks the Request Government Air Drop side quest.

Finally, at the end of the scaffolding, there will be a door that requires the West Bridge Key to unlock. To find this item, you'll want to:

  • Head to Camden Park , found in the southwestern section of the map shown above.
  • Inside here, head towards the back by the white rollercoaster .
  • Head up the wooden stairs to reach the top, and make your way up the roller coaster tracks .
  • Heading towards the back of the tracks, you'll find a red train with a backpack at the front. The key will be in here.
  • When you enter the room back at the bridge, you'll find tons of materials, like a small amount of Caps , wrenches, scissors, a Golf Club Plan, and whole suit of Power Armor .

Finally, at the end of the scaffolding, there will be another exit on the side through a fence . You'll then have successfully reached the other side, where you can visit some nearby stops like Cow Spots Creamery, Camp Adams, Ohio River Adventures , and more.
