Ocean & Earth

Ocean & Earth

About ocean & earth.

Ocean and Earth is the world leaders in quality and innovative surf hardware accessories for over 35 years.

Ocean and Earth was established in 1978 by Brian Cregan in Australia, on the South Coast of N.S.W. The first product manufactured and sold was a surfboard leash, which Brian a travelling Australian pro surfer at the time, saw a need for a better leash. Using better urethane material and adding the rail saver, the Ocean and Earth leash became the most popular leash in Australia. From this initial product, other surf hardware accessories were added to the range over the years, including surfboard covers, wax, car racks, softboards, wetsuits and apparel. Ocean and Earth is now sold in over 40 countries world wide.

Focusing on quality, design, function and innovation, Ocean and Earth has been able to keep improving and growing their range for over 35 years. This is no more evident then in the recently released “ONE XT leash”, which is the world’s strongest leash. Their knowledge and history of surf hardware products is umatched in the surf industry, with all Ocean and Earth products designed and built by surfers for surfers.

The width of your truck axle should closely match the width of your skateboard deck, usually within 1/4”.

Truck Size

For additional info visit our Skateboard Trucks Buying Guide

Truck height is measured from the bottom of the truck’s baseplate to the center of the axle. In general, a mid-sized truck works well for most skateboarders, but high or low trucks may be preferred for different styles of skaters.

Truck Height

LO - Provides extra stability for flip tricks, designed for small wheels (50-53mm wheel size recommended).

MID - Good all-around profile for street or park (53-56mm wheel size recommended).

HIGH - Great for cruising and carving, designed for large wheels (56mm+ wheel size recommended).

The hanger is the truck's T-shaped aluminum alloy grind area. It makes direct contact with rails and curbs. The hanger holds the axle on which the wheels are mounted. Hangers weigh about 10-13 oz, with lighter ones available. The width of your truck axle should closely match the width of your skateboard deck, usually within 1/4”.

Construction refers to the material(s) used in fabrication or the specific brand technology.

For additional info visit our Skateboard Buying Guide

The average width of a skateboard deck is 7.5"- 8.25". Width is influenced by the size of the rider and the type of riding. Bigger riders and those skating ramps typically prefer a wider deck. Street skaters usually choose a smaller deck. Choose your skateboard deck according to the width, not length. Here are some general guidelines:

Deck Size

MICRO - Deck width: 6.75" or smaller - 5 years old or younger, under 3'4" tall. Size 3 shoes or smaller.

MINI - Deck width: 7.0" - 6 to 8 years old between 3'5" & 4'4" tall. Size 4-6 shoes.

MID - Deck width: 7.3" - 9 to 12 years old between 4'5" & 5'2" tall. Size 7-8 shoes.

FULL - Deck width: 7.5" or larger - for all skaters over age 13, taller than 5'3" with a shoe size of 9 or up.

7.5" to 8" Standard board for adult riders skating streets or doing more technical tricks

8.0" to 8.25" Skating pools, ramps and parks

8.25" and larger Vert, pools, cruising and just going old school

Still having a hard time with size, try our Skateboard Sizer

For additional info visit our Skateboard Decks Buying Guide

Deck type refers to the size or style (shape) of the skateboard deck. If you are a beginner, choose your deck according to the width, not the length. The width you need depends on your size, skating style and personal preference. Here are some general guidelines:

Cruisers, Old School, Freestyle, Longboard and Downhill all refer to a skateboarding style and the corresponding shape.

Length is measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. Average board length is 28"- 32" and longboards can range 32" and larger, but length is only referred to by advanced skaters.

Deck Buying Guide

Wheel size or diameter - All Skateboard wheels are measured in millimeters (mm). The smaller the number, the smaller the wheel. Smaller wheels are slower; bigger wheels are faster.

Wheel Buying Guide

50-53mm - Small slower wheels, stable for trick riding and smaller riders skating street, skate parks and bowls.

54-59mm - Average wheel size for beginners and bigger riders skating street, skate parks, bowls and vert ramps.

60mm + - Specialty riders skating longboards, old-school boards, downhill and dirt boards; made for speed and rougher surfaces.

For additional info visit our Skateboard Wheels Buying Guide

Durometer measures the wheel’s hardness. Harder wheels are faster; softer wheels are slower but have better grip.

78a-87a - Soft wheel good for rough surfaces, longboards or street boards that need lots of grip and easier to roll over cracks and pebbles. Designed for a smooth ride cruising, longboards, hills and rough surfaces.

88a-95a - Slightly harder and faster with a little less grip, but the grip's still good. Street; rough surfaces.

96a-99a - Good speed and grip - an all-around wheel. Great for beginners skating street, skate parks, ramps and pools. Smooth surfaces.

101a + - Hardest and fastest wheel with the least grip. Ineffective on slick and rough surfaces. These are pro wheels.

83b-84b - Wheels using the B scale are extremely hard, measuring 20 points lower than the the A Scale in order to allow the scale to extend another 20 points for harder wheels.

The laws for skateboarding helmets vary from state to state. Many states require that skaters wear a helmet under a certain age, and some states like California make all skaters under 18 wear a CPSC Certified helmet at all times. CSPC skateboard helmets usually have an EPS protective liner that meets the safety standards for skateboarding. Make sure you check your state's regulations before ordering.

CPSC Certified Helmets: California requires that all skateboard helmets must meet the requirements of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code enforces these standards in California and will not allow Warehouse Skateboards to ship non-CPSC Certified helmets to California.

Unsure of the size you need? Visit our Clothing Sizing Charts

Most bearings are measured by an ABEC rating. The higher the ABEC rating, the more accurate and precise the bearing will be. This rating system includes grades 1,3,5,7 and 9. The closer you get to an ABEC 9 rating, the faster and less friction you will have when skateboarding.

Many companies do not use the ABEC rating scale. They brand their own specific technology.

For additional info visit our Skateboard Bearings Buying Guide

Note: Each brands skateboard helmet size will vary; therefore, it is best to measure your head and refer to the sizing chart specific to each brand of helmet. In order to properly measure your head, follow these steps:

Wrap a soft tape measure around your forehead, just above your eyebrows and ears. Keep the tape measure level from the front to the back of your head. Your skateboard helmet should sit low on your forehead.

Helmet Buying Guide

If you do not have a flexible tape measure, try marking a string and measuring it against a ruler.

If the helmet is a gift or you cannot measure the skater's head, measure the inside of a current helmet or hat they wear.

Within each skateboard helmet product page there are specific measurements for each skate brand. Use that information, along with your head size, to determine your correct helmet size before placing your order. This will ensure that you receive the best fit.

Review: Ocean & Earth Wheelie Triple Shortboard Travel Bag

We thrash test ocean & earth’s latest wheeled triple board bag cover and find that they just don’t make them like they used to … thankfully..

ocean earth global travel series bag

There is nothing worse than opening a board bag after you’ve seen the baggage handlers tossing it around like a lion might its half-maimed prey. And how many times have you opened it to discover nothing but a pile of fibreglass and foam? Well, the Triple Wheel Shortboard Cover by Ocean & Earth aims to completely dispatch with that archaic, accepted normality of travel.

ocean earth global travel series bag

There are a bunch of clever design features that Ocean & Earth reckon make the difference. Firstly, the bag uses a heavy duty inline bearing wheel system to make transfers by foot a heap easier. Some people don’t like wheels on a board bag as it does add extra weight with the additional frame that is required to maintain the bag’s integrity. For me, wheels are a no brainer. They make any lengthy foot transfers a lot easier. We chose the 6’6″ bag to take our up to 6’3″ boards, and it weights in at 6kg dry. We could pack four boards and still hit 23kg with a bit of extra pool noodle padding and gear.

20mm extra protection where it counts.

The bag also uses a shock-absorbing foam in a three-layer sandwich construction. The sandwich includes three layers: an armour-weave polyester outer, a filling of 10mm shock absorbing foam and a Tarpee lining on the inside. The armour-weave is tear proof, lightweight and water repellent, which we tested over several days of unseasonal monsoonal rainfall. It also boasts an extra 20mm of padding on the nose, rail and tail – all target areas for bored baggage handlers. The double thick gusset padding is claimed to be the thickest rail protection on the market.

ocean earth global travel series bag

The zipper is common fail point on all board bags, so it was good to see heavy duty zippers used. We never got to the point of failure in this test, with the zippers thankfully. They are also lockable and we are always careful to zip-tie zippers together on international flights to avoid any unwanted Schapelle Corby incidents.

Empty.

The inner sleeve is a great addition.

Full pack: four boards.

Full pack: four boards.

A useful addition to the board bag is an inner sleeve – a very lightweight board bag that allows you to pack boards top and bottom around it. It dispenses with sheet linings between boards, or towels. A really nice touch and, when used with the compression straps and pool noodles, creates a really compact package.

The bag does feature fin pockets, but we never used these. They sit along one rail and we didn’t like the thought of hard fins rubbing against the rail, even through the padded design. Having said that, the fins themselves would add another level of protection against piercing etc.

The board bag also comes with a storage hook and compartments inside as well as an external pocket (to stow the shoulder strap for flights), and a place to include your contact details. Nice touches and adds to the bag’s premium appeal.

The bag we tested is a 6’6″ model. The wheeled version retails for $579 and the same bag without wheels is $469). It is 2032mm long and can take a board up to 22.5″ wide and 6’8″ long. The depoth of the bag is around 178mm and it weighs in at 6kg. Each length board bag comes with a slightly different price and weight.

Our test route would take us to Indonesia on the cheapest airline we could afford (only to make sure we got the sloppiest baggage handlers for the test, of course), then a ferry to Nusa Lembongan and back (in rough seas) and more than 10 transfers where the board bag was the foundations for a very tall stack of boards atop our driver, Manking Donkey’s car. All in the name of testing this bag in real-life conditions.

After a month of travel we managed to completely avoid any in-transit dings – apart from a few pressure dings on the decks when we didn’t get the pack quite right. We did pack the board bag carefully as we normally would for travel. This included pool noodles split and used on rails, noodle wedges on the nose and tail blocks and to fill negative spaces between rocker curves.

It’s fair to say the bag copped a fair amount of abuse and I was pleasantly surprised not to discover any dings. The extra padding, internal sheath, compression straps and smart packing certainly worked.

ocean earth global travel series bag

As far as the bag’s usability goes, it has a shoulder carry strap that can be anchored at different points, depending on how you want to carry it. Over the shoulder and up the front to make the wheels do the bulk of the donkey work. It makes it a cinch to lug 23kg of boards and gear.

The wheels themselves are a large diameter so roll over most obstacles. They are an area where we could see improvement – they are set quite narrow and we reckon a wider set wheelset would give the bag more stability and allow the bag to sit more squarely side on when shuffling forward in airport queues. The hardware used in the wheel chassis is a lightweight metal and after a few months of abuse, our bag already shows surface rust on it. That should all be stainless or titanium in this environment. Certainly an area to address for Ocean & Earth.

ocean earth global travel series bag

The hardware used in the wheel chassis is a lightweight metal and after a few months of abuse, our bag already shows surface rust on it. That should all be stainless or titanium in this environment.

The zipper worked fine throughout and hopefully will have the quality to last for many years to come. Most board bags end their life with zipper malfunctions. We should note that there are many skilled canvas product makers who can sew new zips into them.

ocean earth global travel series bag

In summary the Triple Wheel Shortboard Cover by Ocean & Earth has taken the humble coffin and spent money on tech where it needs it. The padding is superb and you don’t have to have that sinking feeling when you pack your favourite quiver into the bowels of this one. Yes, there’s still room for improvement, but this is a step-up in multi board travel bags.

The glittering towers of the Moscow City business district dominate the skyline of the Russian capital. The sleek glass-and-steel buildings -- designed to attract investment amid an economic boom in the early 2000s – are a dramatic, modern contrast to the rest of the more than 800-year-old city.

Now they are a sign of its vulnerability, following a series of drone attacks that rattled some Muscovites and brought the war in Ukraine home to the seat of Russian power.

The attacks on Sunday and Tuesday aren’t the first to hit Moscow — a drone even struck the Kremlin harmlessly in May. But these latest blasts, which caused no casualties but blew out part of a section of windows on a high-rise building and sent glass cascading to the streets, seemed particularly unsettling.

“It’s very frightening because you wake up at night hearing explosions,” said a woman who identified herself only as Ulfiya as she walked her dog, adding that she lived in a nearby building. Like other Muscovites interviewed by The Associated Press, she did not identify herself further out of fear of retribution or for her personal safety.

Another resident, who gave her name as Ekaterina, said Tuesday’s blast “sounded like thunder.”

“I think for the first time, I got really scared,” she said. “I don’t understand how people in a war zone can live like this every day and not go mad.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones outside Moscow and had electronically jammed another, sending it crashing into the IQ-Quarter skyscraper that houses government offices like the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade — the same building that was hit Sunday.

A cordon went up around the building and personnel from the fire department and the Russian Investigative Committee were at the scene. Hours later, residents strolled through the district along the Moscow River or sat on benches in the sunshine. By about 1 p.m. Tuesday, workers were already starting to replace damaged windows.

The business district, a 10-minute subway ride west of the Kremlin, is home to some of Moscow’s flashiest restaurants, offering far-reaching views of the capital and a menu of upscale fare like three types of caviar, shellfish from Russia’s Far East and French cuisine.

But there was no escaping the grim news.

While Russian state television has largely played down the strikes, one channel sandwiched a segment on how Moscow’s air defenses successfully intercepted the drones in between reports highlighting Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said in Ukraine that Moscow “is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” without confirming or denying Kyiv’s involvement in the drone attacks that in recent days have struck from the capital to the Crimean Peninsula .

After Sunday’s strike, the Kremlin said security would be ramped up.

Still, the size of the drone that hit the Moscow City district led analysts to question the effectiveness of the capital’s air defenses, suggesting it could have been launched from Ukraine.

“If this is the case, this would be rather embarrassing for Russia’s air defenses. If a drone has been in Russian airspace for hours, air defenses should have picked it up earlier and shot it down earlier,” said Ulrike Franke, an expert in drones and military technology at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

While they haven’t caused much physical damage, bringing the drone campaign to Moscow “blows holes in Russia’s narrative that the war on Ukraine is successful and that it is being prosecuted far away from any consequences for the Russian people themselves,” said Keir Giles, a Russia expert at the Chatham House think tank in London.

“That is something which is going to be harder and harder for Russia’s propaganda machine to explain away,” he said.

A Muscovite who identified himself to the AP only as Eldar summed up the strikes this way: “We attack them, they attack us. And it’s obvious that they will succeed somewhere, and we will succeed somewhere. We should try to strengthen the defense.”

In Odintsovo, where some of the drones were downed about 30 kilometers (18 miles) southwest of the capital, some residents discussed the events on their local Telegram channel.

One woman talked about hearing noises that turned out to be a car or improperly closed trash containers, and seeing what she thought were drones but actually were a flock of birds, a plane and a wind-blown plastic bag.

“How is it possible to live like this?” she asked the group.

“Stop creating panic,” one member admonished her.

“If you hear a noise, be happy because it hasn’t hit you,” added another.
