Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Viking Venus

Viking is known for its impeccable quality in cruises ; they did not disappoint ! Service, food, ship, all excellent. The stateroom was nicely appointed and serviced twice a day. Our room steward was extremely attentive. The bed was firm but comfortable. Dining was very good. Several restaurants to choose from. The world cafe buffet was a bit crowded several nights , but we managed and the ... Read More

Review for a Canada & New England Cruise on Viking Star

That catchphrase is used by Viking, and it's apropos! We explored everything --- the ship, the food, the learning opportunities aboard and ashore. We thought it was quite a great cruise -- the ship is modern, with great ambiance, terrific crew from over 50 countries, amazing food. We enjoyed this being a cruise for adults (no kids under 18), and with no casino to have to go through, and no ... Read More

We chose this cruise so we could celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary in a special way. This was our first cruise. I would have liked at least two days at each port for further sightseeing. Half a day was just too short. We ate primarily at the World Cafe. I can control what I eat and how much I eat better at a buffet. I don't eat fish and felt there was an over abundance of fish featured ... Read More

I've sailed with Viking before and honestly, won't cruise with anyone else. The ship is marvelous. The support before and during the cruise is professional and total. The staff are unfailingly helpful and pleasant. The excursions well planned and organized. A well written daily newsletter (Viking Daily) provided information about all the goings on for the next day so you have time to decide what ... Read More

We chose Viking because we had heard so many positive things about this company. We were very disappointed in this cruise. The service in the Restaurant and the lack of efficiency in the way things were run was a disappointment. The service in the Specialty Restaurants was better than The Restaurant, the food was better in the Specialty Restaurants. Excursions that were free were ... Read More

We had taken the Grand European Viking River cruise in 2022 and were so impressed with the experience that we thought we would try the ocean cruise. This cruise had all the great things we experienced on the river but included things like the infinity pool, (so cool) and inside pool and hot tubs. A variety of dining experiences. Review for a Baltic Sea Cruise on Viking Mars

We chose this cruise to see areas we have not previously visited. For two weeks, we were pampered royally, fed deliciously, entertained in a variety of ways, educated in areas pertinent to our travels, and toured comfortably and informatively. Itinerary Expand All

Day 1: montreal, quebec, canada.

Embark your ship and settle into your stateroom. Montreal enjoys a picturesque island setting on the St. Lawrence River. Historic Vieux-Montréal, or Old Montreal, evokes the early days of fur trading. The heart of the city is rich with stone houses, inviting boutiques and grand public buildings. The 1829 neo-Gothic Notre-Dame Basilica on the Place d'Armes, is one of the city's most beloved structures; its colorful interior includes a deep blue ceiling sprinkled with gold stars and stained glass windows. In the Bonsecours Market, a classic Palladian-style, domed building, shops and cafés are a lively stage for daily life.

Day 2: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Vieux-Montréal, or Old Montreal, preserves the rich character of an old colony. Archaeological remains from the city's first settlement are preserved in the Pointe-à-Callière museum. The silver dome of the Bonsecours Market, a splendid Renaissance Revival building, sheltered Montreal's main market for over a century and briefly hosted the Parliament of United Canada in 1849. Adjacent, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours is one of the city's oldest churches, and the historic Château Ramezay once hosted Benjamin Franklin as he sought to recruit troops against the British.

Day 3: Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

Quebec City is by many accounts the most French city in New France. The Old Town's centerpiece, the magnificent Château Frontenac, seems transported from the palatial landscapes of the Loire Valley, and its French-accented streets lead past white-stone buildings that evoke old-world medieval villages. The only remaining walled city in North America outside of Mexico, Quebec City was fortified in the 17th century soon after its founding in 1608. Its strategic setting on the rocky promontory of Cape Diamond gave troops a close view of the St. Lawrence.

Day 4: Saguenay, Quebec, Canada

Saguenay is one of southern Quebec's most cosmopolitan cities. It consists of three boroughs: Jonquière, Chicoutimi and La Baie. Once neighboring towns, they were merged to form the present-day city in 2002. Except for some Inuit and Cree villages, there are no towns due north between Saguenay and the Arctic. Like so many Canadian cities founded amid woodland, Saguenay grew its pulp and paper trade with the late 19th century arrival of the Canadian National Railway. Since then, this resilient town has recovered from a great fire, a landslide and a flood.

Day 5: Sail the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Follow in the footsteps of 10th-century Vikings and sail the vast Gulf of St. Lawrence, an outlet for the North American Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway. Enjoy the amenities of your ship as you sail. Perhaps take a breath of fresh air on a brisk walk around the Promenade or begin your day with a workout in the well-equipped Fitness Center.

Day 6: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Prince Edward Island evokes the simplicity of Canada's maritime life, a fertile mix of fishing and farming. In the capital of Charlottetown , tree-lined streets shade restored 19th-century mansions and tidy green parcels dot provincial squares. The island has been molded by rich Scottish and French heritages, as evidenced by the traditional ceilidh, or kitchen party, that still unites friends and neighbors. Besides its picturesque landscapes, the island's biggest draw might be the farmhouse that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery to write her famous novel Anne of Green Gables.

Day 7-8: Sail the Nova Scotia Coast

It was 1605 when French ships first plied these waters to establish Nova Scotia's first European settlement. British and Dutch galleons followed, intent on conquest. By the time of the American Revolution, the British had won Nova Scotia, but Americans wreaked havoc along their coast, commandeering mercantile ships and ruining the economy for the redcoats and their loyalists. It all culminated in several naval battles here, the waters crowded with American and British war ships at full mast and the smog of booming cannons drifting over the sea.

As you sail, explore our well-curated Library, tucked in a private alcove of the Living Room, and select from a broad range of titles. Read a book by the Main Pool, a calming oasis in any weather with its retractable roof, allowing for year-round swimming.

Day 9: Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Saint John is fondly deemed the “Original City,” and lies on the shores of the Bay of Fundy . The city exudes a rich history and culture at every turn. Uptown alone is home to several historic landmarks. On the North Market Wharf stands the New Brunswick Museum, the longest continually operating museum in Canada. Nearby, the bell of the Saint John City Market announces the start and end of its business day, a tradition it has upheld for more than a century. At night, in St. Patrick's Square, the Three Sisters Lamp is aglow, as she helps to guide ships into the harbor.

Day 10: Bar Harbor, Maine, United States

Bar Harbor is a picturesque coastal town occupying northeastern Mount Desert Island. Nearly a century after welcoming its first European settlers, the town began to experience an influx of visitors with the arrival of Thomas Cole, whose paintings revealed an idyllic wilderness. His landscapes of verdant spruce forests, glistening ponds and dramatic mountain peaks captured the attention of city dwellers longing for respite from urban life, and by the mid-20th century, Bar Harbor became a thriving summer getaway and a favorite among the wealthy and artistic.

Day 11: Portland, Maine, United States

Portland is one of Maine's biggest cities and its largest port. This city “Down East” was established in 1633 and grew into a major shipping center whose past is evoked today by redbrick warehouses, shipbuilders' mansions and narrow cobblestone streets. Today, it is a haven of fine restaurants, numerous public parks and rich arts, music and museum scenes. American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born here and American painter Winslow Homer was inspired by its seascapes. Portland's coastal vistas include the Portland Head Light, the state's oldest lighthouse.

Day 12: Newport, Rhode Island, United States

Newport is a showcase of palatial mansions and stunning lawns and gardens on Narragansett Bay. Families such as the Vanderbilts and Astors constructed their grand houses here as extravagant retreats from the bustle of New York. Others followed, and soon the city was the second home of the most elite families in the nation. A sojourn along ten-mile Ocean Drive reveals much of the city's architectural and seaside splendor. The city's marina showcases a jaw-dropping collection of sleek, gleaming yachts.

Day 13-14: Sail the Atlantic Ocean

Sail the Atlantic Ocean, divided in half, north to south, by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Longer than the Rockies, the Himalayas and the Andes combined, this underwater mountain range is the longest on Earth. Renew your body, mind and spirit in our Scandinavian-inspired Spa, a Nordic sanctuary of holistic wellness, today while at sea. Whether you unwind in the Sauna, refresh in the Snow Grotto or take a dip in the Thermal Pool, you will feel recharged and revitalized.

Day 15: Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, United States

A beloved leisure destination for Floridians and visitors alike, the Ft. Lauderdale area exudes the carefree attitude of South Florida's coast. In Miami, a thriving Cuban culture infuses Old Havana and gleaming high-rises overlook Biscayne Bay. On the outlying barrier islands, South Beach is an intoxicating blend of seaside glamour and art deco pastel brilliance. Farther north, the seven-mile-long Ft. Lauderdale Beach provides a more leisurely ambience. Along Las Olas Boulevard, cafés and boutiques invite lingering and endless browsing. After breakfast, disembark your ship and journey home.

We’re back home in Scottsdale, Arizona after 15 days at sea with Viking on one of their incredible expedition ships, the Octantis. We’ll have much to share in future posts about the sights, excursions, onboard experiences, and sailing the St. Lawrence Seaway and North Atlantic Ocean. For now, we’re going to recap a few highlights of our trip that you may have missed on social media while we were on the cruise. This is a fairly new cruise for Viking as part of their Longitudinal World Cruises from the Great Lakes to Antarctica. Some of the other passengers we met began  their journey in the Great Lakes and were going all the way to Antarctica. We embarked in Toronto, Ontario and disembarked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The adventure begins — embarkation in Toronto

Leaving Toronto for the Canada and Atlantic Coast cruise

From the easy transfer from the Toronto airport to the port and an introduction to the ship’s safety procedures, everything went smoothly during embarkation. After a nice lunch in the World Cafe onboard, we headed to our Nordic Balcony stateroom where a delicious cake, chocolate strawberries, and a bottle of wine awaited us to mark our wedding anniversary. And what a great view we had of the Toronto skyline!

After a night of cruising Lake Ontario, our first full day of sailing was a lovely easy cruise on the St. Lawrence River through Ontario. We spent quite a bit of time on the outer decks on this beautiful day to admire lush green trees (no fall color changes yet) lining the shore, waterfowl. alluring camping and beach sites, and riverside homes with docks that made us imagine life in such a pretty setting. In several places, we also spotted people on the shore watching our beautiful Octantis sail by and waving to passengers on deck.

Shore excursions — history, culture, nature, and adventure

Lower part of Quebec City with a funicular that goes to the top of the old city

Quebec City

There were multiple included and optional excursions in each port — Trois-Rivières, Quebec City, Lunenburg (I also had a great visit in Lunenburg several years ago), New York City, Norfolk VA, and Charleston SC. Due to extreme weather conditions, the captain wisely decided that we would have to skip the destinations of Cap-aux-Meules in Quebec and Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia (both normally on the itinerary) and head to Halifax, Nova Scotia, a great city to visit . Typical of Viking cruises, the excursions provided a nice diversity with history, culture, nature, and adventure.

Zodiacs returning to the Viking Octantis on the St. Lawrence Seaway

Zodiacs returning to the Octantis

Adventure is also calling you with water activities available on Viking expedition cruises such as rides on zodiacs, special operations boats (capable of 40 knots per hour), kayaks, and most notably — the submarines (the dives are optional excursions and sell out quickly). Even if you don’t want to participate in excursions on these vessels, watch the Viking Daily bulletins while onboard to see a designated time to be able to tour the hangar (the first marina actually located on a cruise ship) where they are stored, maintained, and launched. It’s quite impressive! The watercraft are also used by the onboard scientists in conducting important scientific studies, unique to any cruise ship.

On the Canada and Atlantic Coastline cruise there are six full days of sailing without any destination stops, so it’s important that you enjoy time on the sea. Our cruise had seven full days because of a change of itinerary due to the weather. There are many onboard activities to enjoy while sailing. You won’t get bored.

There are 36 experts onboard the ship for each expedition journey. They include naturalists, kayak guides. submarine pilots, and scientists who give lectures, hold workshops, and are enthusiastic about talking to guests about their work.

Expedition Central (weather balloon in the center)

In Expedition Central, onboard scientists are available to discuss projects on which they are working on and to share information about their studies, the local area, and wildlife. Hands-on workshops on topics such as radio communications and the making of boating and climbing knots are also scheduled during the cruise. One of the many real scientific studies of Viking expeditions is the weather balloon launch and real-time data retrieval officially authorized by NOAA ( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ). The U.S. National Weather Service has authorized the Viking expedition ships as the first civilian ships to be official launch stations. We were lucky that the weather held out for us to be able to watch the launch of the balloon from the top deck one evening.

In the Science Lab, guests can request supervised access to get hands-on with some of the research activities of the scientists. The lab was developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge and Akvaplan-Niva.

Playing digital games in the Living Room

As you will find on Viking ocean cruises, there is a wide range of fun gatherings, games, and live entertainment. There are also pleasant places to relax including the Explorer’s Lounge, Living Room, other common areas, and your own comfortable stateroom.

On this cruise, lectures included topics such as whale and dolphin identification, what seabirds and other creatures to look for on our cruise, how to tell a sea lion from a seal, and much more.

We really appreciate the fitness center with cardio equipment, weights and more. There are also Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, and other classes offered throughout the cruise. The full-service onboard spa offers many health and wellness treatments, pool, sauna, and ice cold shower. There are also three small pools (hot, warm, and cold) on the Aquavit Terrace providing a real Nordic experience.

Walking the promenade is great for exercise and enjoying being at sea. Take time to watch for wildlife and admire the sunrises and sunsets over the ocean.

Each Viking ocean and expedition ship has an extensive collection of art, artifacts, and photography throughout. On the Viking Voyager app (which you’ll use while onboard) there is an art guide that you can follow to see and learn about all of the works. The art aboard Octantis had a theme accentuating Antarctica, the final destination for this Longitudinal World Cruise.

Mr. TWS in Manfredi’s

There are two specialty restaurants, The Restaurant and Manfredi’s, just like on the ocean cruises, but reservations are required on the expedition ships. We like the fact that the dress code is elegant/casual, not formal as on some other cruise lines. Also like on the ocean ships, the World Cafe and Mamsen’s casual/no reservations dining areas are also very popular.

The food and wines were excellent, consistent with our previous Viking cruising experiences. Mr. TWS particularly appreciated the many seafood and vegetarian options.

Mr. TWS having breakfast in the World Cafe on the Viking Octantis Expedition ship

Mr. TWS having breakfast in the World Cafe

Reservation tip: Prior to the cruise, you’ll have a chance to make one reservation in each of the specialty restaurants. We recommend choosing sailing days since on excursion days you might want to have flexibility for a late lunch in the destination (which we like to do) and then a lighter dinner at The Grill or World Cafe. Once onboard, you can make additional reservations in the specialty restaurants either at Guest Services on Level 1 or on the Viking Voyager app.

Room service is available 24/7 with a limited menu. Take advantage of this service at least once to enjoy the pampering.

Viking Octantis at port in Trois Rivieres

Viking Octantis at port in Trois Rivieres

The Viking Expedition ships accommodate up to 378 passengers in 189 staterooms. The ship is similar to the ocean ships (which host 930 guests) in interior design, just on a bit smaller scale. We love the smaller size of the Viking ships. We were also happy to learn about the energy-efficient design of the Octantis that actually exceeds the Energy Efficiency Design Index requirements by 38%.

Stay tuned to Traveling with Sweeney as we will have more posts about the cruise.

Northern lights cruises: A guide to chasing the aurora borealis at sea

Fran Golden

Witnessing the elusive northern lights flickering across the sky might cause you to gasp because it's actually that cool. The colorful ribbons of green look like something from outer space — and they are. Auroras appear when charged particles collide with Earth's atmosphere.

Seeing the ethereal display, also known as the aurora borealis, is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. Cruise ships can take you to destinations where your chances of catching Mother Nature's special light show are improved.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Remember that seeing this phenomenon doesn't involve a cruise director flipping on a switch. Witnessing the northern lights requires clear and dark skies, late-night viewing hours, enough solar activity for the colors to appear and a big dose of luck. Keep that in mind before you invest all your cruise vacation hopes in this one experience.

Where can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

viking cruise to canada

The lights are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in locations on the so-called auroral oval, a ring zone over the polar regions. In cruising terms, that means prime viewing is in northern Alaska (which is easily accessible on cruisetours), Norway, Iceland, Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland.

Just off the auroral ring is the rest of Alaska. If you are on a cruise in the Inside Passage before April 21 or after Aug. 21 and are willing to be awake in the middle of the night (the lights tend to appear in Alaska after midnight), there's a chance you'll see the aurora borealis.

Cruise lines operating in Alaska — including Holland America , Princess Cruises and UnCruise Adventures — have northern lights sign-up sheets so you don't have to stay up all night, every night, hoping to see the display. Put your name on the list, and you'll receive a wake-up call or knock on your cabin door if there's aurora action. Plan to put on your clothes or bathrobe quickly, as the lights might only appear for a few minutes. (They could also last considerably longer.)

Related: Peak solar activity is forecast for 2024: Here are the best places around the world to see the northern lights

If you're interested in where to see the northern lights outside Alaska, the Arctic city of Alta, Norway, calls itself "The City of Northern Lights."

Alta's credentials include the world's first permanent observatory for viewing the aurora borealis; it was built there in 1899. A whole industry has sprung up around the lights, including such extravagant shore excursions as an overnight in a tent with viewing windows at a Sami dog-sledding camp. Alta is also home to the Northern Lights Cathedral, an architectural landmark.

Tromso is another Norwegian destination known as a hub for aurora borealis viewing. In late January, there's a northern lights arts festival featuring top artists in various musical genres.

Cunard Line and Hurtigruten are among the lines that visit northern Norway in the fall. However, the peak viewing season is from November to March (see below). Viking also visits but in the winter.

Iceland, Greenland and Arctic Canada appear on many expedition ships' itineraries during northern lights season, mostly early in the season in August and September. Lines with ships there include Quark Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions.

When can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

viking cruise to canada

Because of the late-setting and early rising midnight sun, it's way too light during the summer to see the northern lights in the destinations mentioned, but solar activity does take place year-round.

If you have a goal of seeing the aurora borealis in any of the destinations discussed here, you're best off booking as far into the fall as you can find a cruise. Norway is the only prime northern lights destination with winter cruises.

The lights like to appear in the wee hours — particularly between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. — in Alaska. An advantage in Norway is that it's dark enough to see them for a longer period during fall and winter.

Do cruisetours in Alaska improve my chances of seeing the lights?

Cruisetours in Alaska can improve your odds of seeing the aurora because they get you to Fairbanks and other inland destinations in Alaska that tend to have more cloud-free skies than in the Inside Passage, where cruise ships sail.

While you might see the lights from Denali National Park and Preserve during the viewing season, venturing to Fairbanks and points farther north will increase your odds.

Fairbanks tourism folks like to brag that if you visit for at least three nights between Aug. 21 and April 21, your chances of seeing the aurora borealis are more than 90%. (That assumes you are out actively looking during the late evening hours.)

Since your cruisetour might not visit for three nights, consider booking extra hotel nights before or after your cruise. Other things to do in this laid-back city (human population: about 100,000; moose population: 16,000) include riverboat tours, gold panning and yoga with reindeer.

You can also see the lights in Canada's Yukon Territory, including in the gold rush town of Dawson City, which is visited on some Holland America cruisetours.

Should I go on a cruise just to see the northern lights?

Yes, but remember that the phenomenon is dependent on the weather (clear skies required) and hard to predict, despite scientists' best efforts.

Viking has wintertime cruises to Norway from London specifically designed to track the lights in the Norwegian Sea during the peak viewing season — throughout the cruise but especially above the Arctic Circle in Tromso and Alta (where the sailings stop overnight). It's dark in these locales in winter, increasing your chances.

Hurtigruten is so invested in its northern lights experiences that it has hired famed northern lights astronomer Tom Kerss as its "chief aurora chaser." He will serve as an onboard expert, offering talks and workshops for passengers.

The line is so sure you will see the lights on the October-through-March sailings of its year-round 11- and 12-day Norwegian Coastal Express itineraries that the company has a guarantee called the Northern Lights Promise. If the deck's officers don't announce to all on board that the northern lights are happening, you can get a six- or seven-day Norwegian Coastal cruise for free.

Cruise Operator Viking’s IPO Looks Like a Winner

V iking Cruises has turned European river travel into a lucrative business by catering to the Masterpiece Theater crowd—affluent older American tourists interested in culture, art, and history.

The cruise line’s parent, Viking Holdings, plans to go public in the coming week. The deal could generate a positive reception from investors due to the company’s profitability, high-end niche, and growth prospects.

Viking plans to sell 44 million shares in a price range of $21 to $25, which would raise $1 billion and value the company at around $10 billion based on 431 million shares outstanding, according to its prospectus. The deal is expected to be priced on April 30 and begin trading on May 1. The stock will trade on the NYSE under the ticker VIK. Underwriters include BofA Securities, J.P. Morgan, UBS, and Wells Fargo.

The company operates 92 vessels including 58 of its signature flat, long ships accommodating 190 passengers each that ply European rivers such as the Seine, Rhine, and Danube. The company’s slogan is “Exploring the World in Comfort.”

The Viking experience is the antithesis of boozy fun marketed by big cruise lines on their massive ships. There are no children under 18 allowed on Viking vessels and there are no casinos on board.

Founded in 1997, Viking has become synonymous with European river travel due in part to shrewd marketing. It sponsored PBS’s Masterpiece Theater, including the hit series Downton Abbey. The company diversified into the luxury ocean market in 2015 and now leads in that sector.

The company had $4.7 billion in revenue in 2023, up nearly 50% from 2022, and it earned a pro forma 56 cents a share excluding special factors. At the midpoint of the pricing range, the company would be valued at a steep 41 times its 2023 pro forma earnings.

But the stock looks reasonable based on free cash flow. It’s valued at about 10 times the $1 billion of free cash flow that it generated last year. Using another metric, the company is valued at about 13 times its 2023 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, or Ebitda. Viking has less than $4 billion of net debt.

Viking released some first-quarter financials in its prospectus that showed improvement over the same period in 2023. Revenue of $715 million at the midpoint of a range was up 14% versus the year-earlier period, and its operating loss narrowed to $80 million at the midpoint of the range, against a $116 million loss in the first quarter of 2023. The first quarter is seasonally weak, with the company profitable in the second and third quarters of the year.

The luxury market is hot, with investors gravitating toward stocks such as Ferrari and Hermès. The company bills itself as the only “pure play luxury public cruise line.”

The initial public offering will represent a score for CEO, chairman and founder Torstein Hagen and for investors TPG and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

Before the IPO, Hagen owned about 54% of the company, with TPG and CPP at roughly 21% each. In the IPO, the company will sell 11 million shares and TPG and CPP a total of 33 million.

Viking carried about 650,000 passengers in 2023, who paid an average of more than $7,000 per trip against about $2,000 for cruise line industry leader Carnival, which is a mostly mass-market company. Viking caters to travelers, mostly Americans, who are 55 years old or over and who are interested in culture, art, music, history, and science. it caters to what it calls “thinking people.”

Viking says it has 51% of the riverboat market for North American tourists. In 2015, it started an ocean cruising division and now has an industry-leading share of 26%.

In a presentation available on the RetailRoadshow website, Hagen said that Viking has disproved the industry view that it’s “tough making money on smaller ships.” Viking’s riverboats are larger than those of many of its competitors, which allows for more passengers and profitability.

The company sees considerable growth potential in coming years, with 18 new riverboats and six oceangoing ships due for delivery through 2028. Part of its strategy is to operate identical river long-ships and oceangoing ships to simplify marketing and maintenance.

Challenges for Viking include growing competition in the European river market, with some rivals offering what they tout as a more exclusive experience than Viking. Travel specialist Tauck, for instance, notes on its website that its riverboats carry no more than 130 guests.

There are only so many European rivers to experience. Viking’s growth could come from its ocean travel focused on Europe (mostly the Mediterranean and Baltic seas) as well as the Antarctic. River travel is growing on waterways such as the Mississippi in the U.S. and the Mekong in Southeast Asia.

“We maintain a clear focus on our most relevant customer group: English-speaking travelers aged 55 years old and over, who have the time, money, and desire to explore the world,” Hagen wrote in the prospectus. That strategy has worked, and Viking could be rewarded for it when it goes public soon.

Cruise Operator Viking’s IPO Looks Like a Winner

Cruise operator Viking targets $11 billion valuation as IPO market stays hot

Viking is set to trade on the New York Stock Exchange as VIK.

Viking Holdings, the European cruise line operator, is seeking to raise more than $1 billion in a public offering next week that could become the second-biggest IPO of 2024.

Viking is scheduled to price on April 30 and trade the next day, a person familiar with the deal told Fortune . The Pembroke, Bermuda–based company plans to sell 44 million shares at $21 to $25 each, according to a regulatory filing dated April 22. Viking will be offering 11 million shares with the remainder coming from shareholders, according to a statement . BofA Securities and JPMorgan are lead underwriters on the deal, which could end up valuing Viking—slated to trade under VIK on the New York Stock Exchange—at almost $11 billion.

Torstein Hagen, Viking’s chairman and CEO, founded the company in 1997. It has a fleet of 92 vessels that travel to all seven continents, including special expeditions to Antarctica and to the Arctic North.

“Looking toward the future, we believe there are a number of opportunities for growing Viking,” Hagen wrote in a letter accompanying the filing. “We have 24 new ships on order, with options for 12 more. We have also started to enter new markets, such as China and elsewhere in Asia, where we see significant growth potential over the long term.”

Revenue for Viking rose 48% to $4.7 billion in 2023. The company was profitable in 2022 but posted $1.86 billion in losses last year, and it’s highly leveraged, reporting $5.4 billion in total debt as of Dec. 31.

“We have substantial indebtedness and we may not be able to generate sufficient cash to service all of our indebtedness or to obtain additional financing if necessary,” Viking said in the regulatory filing.

The company is also backed by private equity. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and TPG likely will each have nearly 5% of the firm’s voting power after the IPO.

The IPO market is bouncing back. Last week, Ibotta rose 17% during its first day of trading after pricing at $88. Rubrik, a Microsoft-backed cloud data security provider, is scheduled to list shares on Thursday and could raise as much as $713 million . Also on Thursday, Marex Group, a U.K.-based financial services platform, is expected to trade, according to IPOScoop.com.

The year’s biggest IPO still belongs to Amer Sport, the maker of Wilson tennis racquets, which raised $1.37 billion in February, according to data from Dealogic. Viking, if it prices at the top of its range, could raise as much as $1.1 billion.
