A must do when visiting Mobile. Great views of the bay while watching the sunset. Live music, good catered food, great mixed drinks and friendly staff that makes sure you’re being well taken care of. Thanks for offering this new outing in Mobile and we’ll definitely be back!

If you like being on the water, this is a must do. Between the live music, great service, and beautifully lit skyline, it is a wonderfully unique experience. I am a sucker for photos and I loved the unique view it offered of the USS Alabama.

Cruised with friends celebrating their anniversary. In spite of the fog, we had an enjoyable evening. The crew was friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. Cash bar was reasonably priced. The musicians were talented and engaging. Lots to see along the waterfront. I would go again.

We cruised during the week and it was very enjoyable, peaceful, and quite relaxing. Food was good. Drinks were awesome. Live music had us all dancing. The crew was super friendly!! Highly recommend. We'll be back!!

, Florida -- The Pirates of Lost Treasure, the Perdido Key and Orange Beach Mardi Gras krewe notorious for their legendary

shindigs (and impressive pirate ship float) took to the waterways around the key and Orange Beach today for the krewe's annual Mardi Gras Flotilla.

Hundreds of people line along the docks to catch beads during the Pirates of Lost Treasure Mardi Gras Flotilla in Perdido Key, Fla. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. (Brian Kelly/[email protected])

Members of the krewe, garbed in pirate outfits, tossed beads and other throws to people at several stops from large and small boats at several stops. A procession of about one dozen water vessels decked out in Mardi Gras colors launched from Holiday Harbor at 11 a.m. With boat horns blasting and music blazing over the water, the line of boats passed under the Perdido Key Bridge to the Oyster Bar Marina where hundreds of people were lined up on the dock.

There, Wisconsin snowbirds Gene and Larry Pulaski were perched on the deck of the Oyster Bar. Sipping cocktails and wearing colorful feathers around her neck, Gene waved at the boats.

"This is definitely our favorite (Mardi Gras) event," Gene said. "You got this view and lovely weather and all these boats. It's pretty cool."

The procession also cruised by Galvez Landing in Perdido where people sat in lounge chairs on the beach. Some staked out a spot on the two piers, hoping to reel in beads from the boats.

The Traveler

The Southwest Branch Library offers various projects and exercises for kids. From their American Girl Book Club to storytime with lovable mutts, they have artistic fortunes for Kids of any age! You can also visit any visitor center in the Pensacola area to pick up your “Passport” booklet for a fun day of adventure traveling in the Pensacola area.

The Nature Protector

Discover the Perdido Key Beach Mouse, (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis) it is an endangered subspecies of the oldfield mouse.

Found only on a small island between Florida and Alabama, the endangered Perdido Key beach mouse is essential to the integrity of its coastal ecosystem. When left uneaten, seeds stored by these tiny rodents may grow into adult plants that help stabilize the dunes in which they are buried. Stronger dunes provide greater protection to local infrastructure during hurricanes.

Kids aren’t easily wowed when it comes to playgrounds, but this one will have them asking to go back tomorrow. Located at 10004 Gulf Beach Highway, just a mile north of the Naval Air Station, and managed by Escambia County, Perdido Kids Park is an excellent pit stop to unload the kids if they’ve been cooped up in the car.

The park underwent a remodeling in the spring of 2016 and it boasts multiple slides, swings, a rock climbing wall, stationary planes, and much more. It has separate big-kid and toddler playgrounds. There is a beautiful halfmile nature trail that encircles the park. It’s also a welcome relief that the park has a water mister for those, especially hot and humid summer days.

There is a unique sign to guide you into the park from Gulf Beach Highway. On select weekday mornings, you also just might catch a glimpse of the Blue Angels practicing overhead. Perdido Kids Park is free. For more info, check out Perdido Kids Park on Facebook.

Afterward, visit the Native Paths Cultural Heritage Museum (850-453-7382) to see authentic Native American artifacts, historic weapons, and treasures. If you’re lucky, you’ll get the chance to meet members of the Perdido Bay Tribe of Southeastern Lower Muscogee Creek Indians while you’re there, or watch as hospitalized animals are released back into the wild.

There are several great launching sites for canoes and kayaks, particularly Big Lagoon State Park on Gulf Beach Highway and Galvez Landing, adjacent to the popular Hub Stacey’s restaurant. Folks can also rent equipment from the Ranger Station at Big Lagoon. Autumn Hale and her husband Thomas operate Littleheads Kayaks, an ecofriendly business, on River Road. Littleheads offers single, double, and fishing kayaks, paddleboards, banana boat rides, and eco-tours. Private two-hour dolphin cruises are also available.

Pirates in the Pensacola Bay Area: Fact or Fiction?

Ahoy, matey! Pensacola has a pirate history that may seem surprising... read on to learn more about our city's hidden treasure.

Practically any community that hugs the sea as Pensacola does has fanciful legends about its purported pirate past. All around Northwest Florida, we hear apocryphal tales of pirates using the many inlets, bays, and bayous as hiding places or even potential locations for buried booty. Rumor has it that pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries buried treasure on the shores of Perdido Key because it was difficult to find, and shoals in the narrow mouth made entering the bay a tricky maneuver. “It’s certainly possible,” said Mike Thomin. “But in terms of, ‘Is there a lot of documentation to support that?’ the answer is, ‘No.’” Thomin would know. He’s currently on the staff at the Florida Public Archaeology Network where he serves on the Archaeological Tourism Task Force. When he was a student at the University of West Florida, he researched pirates and privateers – who were basically pirates that held special “commissions” from foreign governments for their activities – especially pirate and privateer activity in the Gulf of Mexico.

Not to fear. Thomin says Pensacola does have a pirate story to tell. A few, in fact. “In the early 1800s, piracy revamped up,” he said. “Most people are probably familiar with the Golden Age of Piracy. Think of Black Beard and the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie series. That was the late 1600s to the early 1700s. About 100 years after the Golden Age of Piracy, piracy exploded again, primarily in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.” American ships, as well as Spanish and British vessels, were the targets of the pirates and privateers. What was perhaps Pensacola’s first brush with piracy came in 1811 when a U.S. gunboat chased a French pirate ship called La Franchise along the northern Gulf. Unable to get away from the military ship, the pirates supposedly pulled their ship up onto Pensacola Beach and burned it. The men aboard the ship were said to have disappeared into nearby woods. In 1817, four years before Spain relinquished Florida to the United States in Pensacola, a group of privateers linked to notorious New Orleans pirate Jean Lafitte was believed to have set their sights on Pensacola.

“The plan was that they would take Pensacola over from the Spanish and turn it into a base of operations for their privateering,” Thomin said. “That was kind of a half-cooked-up plot that never happened, but it worried the Spanish officials. They called their citizens to arms.”

Pensacola took center stage in a pirate drama in 1822 when accused pirates aboard a ship called Carmen were brought to the newly established U.S. District Court of West Florida in Pensacola for trial.

In this case, Carmen was charged with firing on Louisiana, a federal Revenue Cutter Service vessel, off the coast of Cuba. Sailors aboard the Carmen likely mistook Louisiana for a merchant ship.

The U.S.S. Peacock witnessed the attack and took pursuit.

“The Carmen did what most pirate ships did when they saw a naval ship; they tried to run away as fast as possible,” Thomin said. “Usually, pirates did not try to engage a Navy ship. If they did, it was because they mistook it for a merchant ship. As soon as they found out they were dealing with a heavily armed Naval ship; they usually ran away.”

The Peacock caught up with the Carmen, apprehending its 18 Spanish soldiers and transporting them to Pensacola. The vessel was taken to a separate court in New Orleans. The facility where the Spanish sailors were tried doesn’t exist any longer, according to Thomin, but it was probably located near what is referred to as the Commanding Officer’s Compound, behind the current Pensacola Museum of History.

The verdict in the case of the Carmen was delivered in January 1823: Not guilty.

That result was not uncommon in such cases at the time, according to Thomin. In some U.S. Federal Court Districts, as many as half of accused pirates and privateers were acquitted. Many of the commissions held by privateers came from countries in Latin America that were in revolt against Spain – a cause that found a degree of sympathy among some Americans.

After the crew of the Carmen was exonerated, the captain lodged complaints with the Spanish government that eventually required the attention of then-Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. Adams went on to become president.

In the end, not only were the sailors freed, but the Carmen was returned to them.
