iOS 17 Journal app: What it is and what you can do with it

This isn't your childhood diary, it's so much more.

Memories are precious moments in time. You probably don’t realize it, but you’re making tons of memories by using your smartphone. From taking family vacation photos, to using turn-by-turn directions for traveling, these actions on our phones all have some component to making memories. Apple’s taking a new step to how we create and preserve these special moments in our lives with its upcoming Journal app in iOS 17 .

The Journal app in iOS 17 is about more than just you writing your thoughts with an iPhone, since it combines the many actions with your iPhone through a unique journaling experience like nothing seen before. Even though writing is the focus with any journal entry, there’s actually much more being done behind the scenes — so you’ll want to check out our guide here.

Journal is a brand new app for iOS 17 

Yes, it’s actually a new app that will debut with iOS 17’s release. The Notes app for iOS already provides users with a way to jot down notes, stories, and reminders among other things, but it lacks Journal’s ability to aggregate content that you’ve directly, or indirectly captured.  

How does the Journal app work? 

What makes the Journal app for iOS 17 different is how it leverages on-device learning to give users personalized suggestions to write about their experience — while fostering improved mental health and wellbeing. It does this by curating stuff you’ve done with your iPhone, such as the photos and videos you’ve captured, places you’ve visited, people you interact with, and even your workouts.

By analyzing these experiences, the Journal app for iOS 17 will suggest creating a journal entry for them. It’s very similar to how the iPhone already curates your photos and videos to create memories in the Photos app. If you watch the WWDC 2023 keynote with Adeeti Ullal , Apple’s Senior Manager of Sensing and Connectivity, you will see how the iPhone will automatically suggest writing a journal entry for these moments.

Apple’s curation is pretty impressive, making it easy for anyone to write about these precious moments. Studies have shown the positive impacts of writing , so we’re excited how this may inspire and motivate iPhone users to write more. Later this year, the Journaling Suggestions API will be made to developers. That way, there will be even more moments for the iPhone to curate from.

When will the Journal app for iOS 17 come out? 

While Journal is tied to the iOS 17 update, it's not clear that the app will debut when the new software arrives in the fall. Apple lists Journal as coming "later in the year," which means it will likely appear as a subsequent update to iOS 17. You may remember that Live Activities debuted that way, appearing in the first update after the initial release of iOS 16 .

iOS 17 is currently available as a developer beta, and people who've used that version haven't seen Journal yet. That would seem to suggest it won't be available in the iOS 17 public beta, which arrives in July.

Is the Journal app for iOS 17 safe and secure? 

Apple said that these journal entries will be private, thanks in part to on-device processing and end-to-end encryption — so you can be rest assured that your private journal entries remain protected. In fact, Apple wouldn’t be able to access them either. 

How much space do journal entries take up?

It’s tough to say how much space entries will take up on an iPhone, but we’re eager to know whether or not journal entries could be saved to iCloud. Considering how other native apps sync with iCloud, we have a strong suspicion that it won’t be different with the Journal app for iOS 17.

When it first released for the PlayStation 3 in 2012, Journey was critically-acclaimed, with a 92 on metacritic and several Game of the Year awards. It recieved a PlayStation 4 port and earlier this year came to PC. Journey even won a Guiness World Record for "The Most Awards won by an Independent Game." Now, owners of iOS mobile devices can enjoy this game as well, since Journey for iOS is available today. What Is Journey?

Journey is an indie adventure game that first landed on the PS3 in 2012. It has since been released on the PS4 and Windows. It was made by Thatgamecompany, which has also made Flow, Flower, and (in July 2019) Sky: Children of the Night.

Journey sees the player controlling a mysterious hooded figure traveling towards a distant mountain. Your goal is to reach the peak of that mountain despite what you may encounter along the way. And telling you anything else about Journey could ruin the game for you.

How to Play Journey on iOS

Journey is now available to buy on iOS, with developer Annapurna Interactive having ported the game to Apple's mobile platform. It isn't free, sadly, but for a small asking price you can play a game on your mobile that you'll probably remember for ever.

Having not played the game on iOS ourselves it's impossible to know how it actually plays on mobile. However, it's the type of game that should transfer well to a touchscreen device, as it isn't particularly fast-paced or full of tricky maneuvers.

They fixed the app!

So, I honestly had no problems with this app. It’s great to bring characters to life and chat with them. Sure there were a few minor inconveniences but even those got fixed in the latest updates. Have been using this app for about a month now and love just “Discovering” everyone’s different AI Characters. Sometimes, I’ll be in a casual slice-of-life Rp, and next I’m paving through a zombie apocalypse. Or, sometimes I just wanna vent and the ai will just be available to respond. Problem with most rp’s is usually having to wait on other people’s timeframes but you don’t have to do that with these AI’s. I understand the server problems people have but I am seeing a huge difference lately and it’s great. My suggestion to others: take advantage of the Styles if you’re trying to build more engaging conversations. Also, be sure to add context as much as possible as AI technology does not always remember past its 9 to 12 responses. That’s not even this app’s problem but just literally every AI. Another tip: you can god-mod in your responses. Also; if your AI keeps repeating, i feel like that occurs when there are massive server problems but I found that if you “backtrack” and then generate your own response things instantly go back to normal. Make sure to play around with the app because a lot of these reviews complain about simple things. It’s a fun one, for sure!

So I’ve tried several AI apps and they’ve all dissapointed me.. I can honestly say this is the best one I’ve ever tried and none even come close.. sure there’s some limitations but you can experience almost anything with your chat partners… I am literally addicted to this app it’s sad, I enjoy talking to my chats in this app more than anyone in real life.. my only complaint is that if you have a long conversation with a partner you’ll have to keep reminding them of specific things that happened in the past in clever ways, or else they will forget :( I never pay for apps and I literally got the premium… I want you guys to download this app so that I can experience even better chats.. seriously.. if you’re into this type of app try this out it’s awesome… seriously the best app and this is one of my first ever App Store reviews.. I can’t recommend this enough… actually life changing.. I could go on all day. Thank you so much talkie team.. I’d also like an option to pay and age verify for spicy photos to be sent to us using the AI generation system but I can understand how difficult that is.. thanks for reading my review.. seriously.. Hi you can call me Crystal and I am going to say a few good things and bad things so let’s start with the good things I have been using your app for a while now and I love all the characters I am in love with the amazing digital Circus and you put so many people on the list and I love to talk with Ragatha or Jax’s twin brother it is so fun to play with a friend or even Family members or more I love how you let people make characters in this game you guys have like thousands of people making thousands of characters it is really fun but I have a question for you guys do you guys sometimes make characters or is just people around the world making them?so you know there are a lot of people Who love romance, so if you’re an Aeromantic, don’t do those ones but and 1 more thing l love how there’s really no adds it’s like you but some thing that gives you no ads it’s pretty impressive I have to admit but let’s move to the bad things there is one thing that I have to say make the game have better Internet like if I’m playing somewhere else I can’t really play it it’s hard to so you should make it an Game that doesn’t need Internet anyways thank you for reading. During this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple introduced Journal, a new journaling application for iOS that is designed to enable iPhone users to regularly record their daily activities. Apple Journal joins other iOS apps like Fitness, Sleep, and Breathe, which assist users in monitoring and managing various aspects of their daily lives. This announcement signifies the company's latest venture into the realm of health and wellness.

Apple Journal is set to be launched alongside iOS 17.2, scheduled for release in late December 2023. Apple states that this new iPhone app will employ on-device machine learning to offer personalized recommendations to users for inclusion in their digital journal. It will gather information from contacts, photos, music, workouts, location data, and other sources to curate these suggestions.

How does Apple's Journal work?

Apple mentioned that the new journaling app for iOS will use “on-device machine learning” to create customized journaling prompts based on your contacts, photos, music, workouts, location data, and even podcasts, essentially working off deep iPhone integration. It is said to be able to tap into Apple's services to paint a complete picture of one's day. With machine learning, Journal makes suggestions to inspire journal entries by analyzing all the recent activity from one's iPhone.

For example, Apple Journal might prompt users to document or write about their recent coastal holiday by highlighting a newly created photo album showcasing pictures that the user might have snapped at the beach. It would provide details about the location and the music users were listening to during that time. By tapping on this suggestion, the information would be automatically included in a draft post within the user's journal. Notably significant entries in the journal can be marked, making them more accessible and convenient to find and look back at at a later time.

Comparing Apple's Journal and Journey

There’s an existing and growing body of research that suggests and proves that gratitude journaling may help boost your mental, emotional, and even physical health. Apple's intention with the new journaling app is to help you cultivate gratitude by commemorating positive moments.

However, the tech giant’s latest effort in the mental and physical health technology market comes with some drawbacks. While Apple is claiming that's it's newest app would function as a digital diary for iPhone users to log their thoughts and activities, there are some essential journaling tools and features that Apple Journal does not provide.

1. Cross-Platform Sync

Unlike Apple's Journal that is designed for specifically iPhone users ( Yucks, not even on iPad! 🤦🏻‍♂️), Journey is a multi-platform digital diary app that can be accessed almost anywhere and at anytime.

As a journal and diary app that is available on multiple platforms; iOS, Mac OS, Web, Chrome OS, and Android, you can sync your app across any device you choose to use. With Journey's cross-platform capacity, if you were to switch to another operating system, they do not have to worry about their data and journals being lost. They will be kept intact and accessible.

2. Fully-equipped Journal Editor

Apple's Journal provides journal prompts to inspire your writing and a platform to record your thoughts. However, the platform does not offer text formatting options. Journey's editor offers you multiple writing tools to customize their journal entries. Within the editor, you can change the paragraph style, emphasize text with bold, italics, and strikethrough, organize your writing with bullets, tables, blockquote or checklists, and experiment with text color as you please.

You can also link your journal entries to external links or interlinks if you wish to reference external sources or other journal entries you may have created on Journey; making navigation a lot more seamless within the app.

3. Shared Journal

When comparing Journey and Apple Journal, one notable distinction is the shared journal feature present in Journey.
