Travelers can find Kronborg Castle at the northernmost tip of the Danish island of Zealand. This castle is included in the Hamlet Castle Tour from Copenhagen and the North Zealand Castles Tour.

The Øresund Bridge Connecting Denmark and Sweden

The Øresund Bridge is one of the can't-miss sights in Denmark. The scenic 10-mile bridge connects Sweden and Denmark, carrying over 60,000 travelers by car or train daily. The toll for driving across the Oresund bridge is paid at the toll station on the Swedish side.

This is definitely one of my favorite attractions in Denmark. Pretty much everything here is made of Lego blocks...millions and millions of them! (Except the food.) This is the original Legoland amusement park which opened in 1968 and charms more Denmark visitors every year. Countless attractions and rides for all ages, along with indoor activities, exhibitions, and new thrill rides. Travelers find Legoland in Billund, in the heart of Denmark (150 miles west of Copenhagen).

The Old Town of Aarhus, Denmark

The city of Aarhus has a historic Old Town that is without a doubt one of the best sights in Denmark. If you're not too far from Aarhus, visit the Old Town here. There are beautiful old houses, little shops, and food and drink on offer, and just lots of things to look at. Travelers get 50% off Old Town admission from January until March, and children under 18 are always free.

The Island of Bornholm

Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, east of Denmark and south of Sweden, with the nickname "Pearl of the Baltic". There are wonderful beaches, lots of bicycle paths, and architecture from the 1800s. You don't need a car on Bornholm - buses, bicycles, and Danish taxis are everywhere. To get to Bornholm, fly to Rønne-Bornholm Airport or check out the ferry connections .

Denmark is the country where Scandinavia begins. It’s changed a lot over the centuries. Once known for its fierce warriors, the Vikings, it’s now a peaceful modern country where innovative architecture shares space with medieval buildings. You’ll see picturesque fishing villages that trace their heritage back to the Vikings, so you’ll want to sample their most famous fish, the herring, perhaps at a smørrebrød. Denmark is the land of Hans Christian Andersen, so you’ll find palaces and castles where maybe fairy tales did come true. An overview of the best places to visit in Denmark:

10. Ribe [SEE MAP]

“You’re not getting old, you’re getting better” is a phrase that is aptly applied to Ribe, Denmark’s oldest town. Located in Jutland, Ribe was founded in 700 as a Viking marketplace; its town hall is the oldest in the country. It was built in 1496, though it didn’t see duty as a town hall until 1709. There is much to see in Ribe, from its quaint half-timbered medieval buildings to Ribe Cathedral, the first Christian church in Denmark. You can explore its Viking heritage or make the rounds with the night watchman in the summer. Nearby is the ecological treasure Wadden Sea National Park.

9. Gilleleje [SEE MAP]

You wouldn’t think a country as far north as Denmark would have a Riviera, but it does. The Danish Riviera is anchored by Gilleleje, a picturesque fishing town on the North Sea at the top of Zealand. Fishermen put their boats to good use in World War II when they end-runned German occupiers and smuggled Danish Jews into Sweden, just 25 km (15 miles) away. You can learn more about these efforts at the local museum. Founded in the 14th century, Gilleleje is pretty and charming with photo opportunities galore. Stroll the city, take in the daily morning fish auction and visit the monument to Kierkegaard, the first existential philosopher.

8. Elsinore [SEE MAP]

Elsinore, also known as Helsingør, is home to one of the famous castles in the world: Kronborg, the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The play has been performed here annually for 80 years. The former medieval fishing village was founded in the 15th century, though a fortress and a church surrounded by convents were established a century earlier. It’s now a bustling port city. A 2012 statue, Han, in the harbor is considered the counterpart of Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid. Top attractions include the castle, the maritime museum, and the statue to Holger Danske, a legendary character who warred with Charlemagne.

7. Aalborg [SEE MAP]

Aalborg is another ancient Danish city that, over the centuries, has transformed itself into an industrial and cultural (emphasis on cultural) center. It’s known for theatre, symphony and opera, as well as the Aalborg Carnival, the largest festival in Scandinavia that centers around carnivals. The city also is known for its half-timbered mansions, the 16th century Aalborghus Castle, a former royal residence, and the 14th century Budolfi Church, built on the ruins of an old Viking church. Two old homes stand out: Jens Bang’s 17th century Dutch Renaissance home that’s housed a pharmacy for 300 years and 17th century mayor Jørgen Olufsun’s half-timbered and sandstone house.

6. Roskilde [SEE MAP]

Located 30 km (20 miles) west of Denmark’s current capital, Copenhagen, is one of the country’s early capitals, Roskilde. One of Denmark’s oldest cities, it is where many monarchs are buried. Their royal tombs can be found at the 12th century Roskilde Cathedral, the first brick Gothic cathedral in Scandinavia. Another key attraction is the Viking Ship Museum, which contains the remains of five Viking ships that were sunk to protect Roskilde from sea invaders. Other sights you might want to see include the royal palace, now an art gallery, and the Roskilde Jars, three mammoth vases that commemorate the city’ 1,000th anniversary. In late June, early July a giant rock music event called the Roskilde Festival takes place here.

5. Skagen [SEE MAP]

Denmark’s northernmost city, Skagen, is also the country’s main fishing port as well as one of the most popular places to visit in Denmark, attracting two million visitors annually. This charming village, with its scenic seascapes, long sandy beaches and fishermen, was popular with 19th century impressionist painters. Danish royalty summered here in the early 1900s; Skagen continues to attract the wealthy today, including sailboaters from around Scandinavia. Skagen, where the Baltic and North seas meet, is renowned for its herring fishing, so be sure to try some here. The city boasts one of Denmark’s oldest lighthouses.

4. Bornholm [SEE MAP]

Bornholm, an island in the Baltic Sea closer to the shores of Poland and Sweden than Denmark, is known for its arts and crafts items, especially glass and pottery. The island is home to several towns with picturesque windmills and several medieval churches, four of which are round. The island, occupied by the Germans in World War II and later by the Soviets, is noted for its outstanding scenery from craggy sea cliffs and forests to verdant valleys and beaches. It’s reachable by ferry from Denmark and Sweden. Here, you’ll find medieval fortresses and sun temples from the Neolithic age. Bornholm also was the setting for Ken Follett’s thriller, Hornet Flight.

Odense translates as “Odin’s sanctuary,” but it’s more famous for other things than a safe haven for worshippers of this Norse god. It is the birthplace and childhood home of the famous story teller Hans Christian Andersen, so you can expect to see many statues and sculptures of his characters around town. Denmark’s third largest city also is famous for the sweet treat marzipan. Plus, many of its attractions are a treat for tourists’ eyes. The list includes an old Viking castle; Funen Village Museum, which recreates life during Andersen’s years there; Funen’s Abbey, one of Denmark’s oldest art museums, and the 11th century Saint Canute’s Cathedral.

With 330,000 people, Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark. Dating back to the eighth century, it started life as a fortified Viking settlement. Aarhus has been a trade center for centuries and is known for its vibrant music scene. The city annually hosts an eight-day international jazz festival. Denmark is one of the countries in Europe that attracts many tourists. It is a popular destination for tourists worldwide, with lush forests, deep fjords, historical towns, and castles from ancient sites to modern attractions.

The most famous attractions are the Little Mermaid Statue, “The Mermaid Girl,” the Rosenborg Palace, or The Royal Theater.

The beauty of this country is not limited to buildings or monuments but also to attractions that visitors can enjoy; it includes many castles, museums, churches, and beautiful medieval cities.

1) little mermaid statue..

This statue is a representation of the classic fairytale, The Little Mermaid. As one can tell by her long flowing hair and fishtail, she has made an unnatural sacrifice to attain something great: immortality with love for all time!

The iconic work was created by sculptor Edvard Eriksen who also designed many statues like Copenhagen’s bronze horse.

The Little Mermaid is located at the end of the city’s harbor, now known as “Little mermaid island,” created especially for her.

Visitors can be photographed with or without her and buy replicas of their pictures everywhere in Copenhagen.

This statue is famous because it inspired new stories like TV cartoons and comic strips. It also inspired a song by legendary fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, which became popular worldwide!

2) Rosenborg Castle

It is rumored that this castle was built in 1460 by King Christian I to serve as his summer home. Today Rosenborg Castle overlooks the city center and is one of Copenhagen’s most visited tourist attractions.

You can tour its many rooms that have been converted into a museum where you will learn about all of Denmark’s history.

The castle conserves the Danish Royal Regalia, which the monarchs used since the 14 th century. This includes royal crowns, swords, and even a wand crafted exclusively for Queen Margrethe II!

If you are lucky enough to visit this castle during its summer garden schedule, take a stroll through its Tulip gardens and other beautiful gardens surrounding the castle.

3) The Danish Historic Museum

The Museum’s mission is to preserve the memory of a time when it was possible to combine the culture of Denmark with that of its neighboring countries in peace, mutual respect, and artistic achievements, whether in science or art. This historic building hosts a museum that can capture any person’s imagination, no matter their age.

The Museum has featured displays from various historical periods: Ancient Denmark, Viking, and medieval times and collections of glass art, silver, and ceramics.

In addition to exhibitions related to old artifacts are also plenty of special events regularly held at the Museum: lectures, concerts, and performances.

4) The Royal Theater

This theater opened its doors in 1788 but closed during World War I to be reopened only in 1927! Tourists flock here not just because of the historic building but also for its very modern productions.

The most famous production is Hamlet, the most extended showing play of all time in Denmark. Actors worldwide fly to Copenhagen to perform in this historic building that is as beautiful on the inside as it is outside.

This theater’s productions are also very diverse and appeal to various audiences, which explains why it has become one of Copenhagen’s top tourist attractions!

5) The Marmorpalais

King Christian IV built it in 1606 as part of his expansion in Copenhagen. It consists of two identical wings joined together by a central position to form a palace with two courts and an inner courtyard.

Christian IV, the absolute monarch of Denmark, built this Palace for his many visits to Copenhagen. In 1795 it became the Royal Hotel but was converted again into Marmor Palais in the 19 th century. Visitors who enter this historic building will fully appreciate its beautiful interior with large, majestic mirrors and many luxurious details.

From the central courtyard, we can admire a pond with a fountain featuring figures of Neptune, Triton, and other sea monsters. Also in this courtyard is a bronze statue of King Christian IV, which Bertel Thorvaldsen created in 1838.

6) Tivoli Gardens

This very well-known amusement park was first established in 1843! Thanks to its beautiful gardens and unique attractions, it has always been a great family destination.

Formerly, it was only a tiny garden with a few rides, but today, Tivoli is a park full of fun for all ages.

From the moment you enter the park, you will notice beautiful flowers and trees alongside statuesque monuments like The Singing Fountain (where water shoots out of a lion’s mouth), The Fountain of Mystery (where water flows from the mouths of laughing children and clowns) and The Royal Carousel.

There are also plenty of rides, like the famous Tivoli rollercoaster, bumper cars, a jungle boat ride through an island full of animals, a Ferris wheel with amazing city views, and many other rides for kids that will surely delight them.

7) Nyhavn Harbor/Canal

Many tourists love to visit this part of Copenhagen, where all the beautiful colorful houses form a charming harbor full of restaurants, shops, and cafes. If you are lucky enough to travel on a warm day, you will see many people enjoying their boat rides in the harbor and walking by its water’s edge.

One of the most popular attractions is Freetown, where many street performers and artists are draped across every corner! These artists will also paint on your face for a small price if you ask nicely.

There are also plenty of souvenir shops that will surely delight anyone looking for a memento of their trip.

Many famous movies have been filmed in this area, such as Sherlock Holmes and The Game of Thrones.

8) Søerne Lakes

This is a group of lakes located in the western part of Copenhagen. They are surrounded by beautiful forests full of nature and wildlife and are great for hiking, biking, or sightseeing on a boat tour. You will see plenty of people picnicking along the banks while listening to live music played by some local musicians.

In total, this area has three lakes: Sortedam, Peblinge, and Søerne. The waters that fill these lakes come from a nearby river that runs through the city. There is also a beautiful garden next to the lake called Rosenborg Bughave Garden, filled with roses of every color and other flowers and trees.

9) Christiania

This self-governing neighborhood in Copenhagen was established in 1971 by settlers who occupied abandoned military barracks. The community formed here has its own constitution, flag, currency, and even stamps! This place was named ‘Freetown Christiania’ because of its liberal lifestyle.

Today this community is a popular tourist destination with its unique culture, houses made of wood, and even a very colorful flag! Many people visit this neighborhood to see the graffiti art or simply walk around the canals to admire its eclectic styles.

However, you should know that Christiania is technically illegal since it does not have permission from the government to reside there. So if by chance the police catch you entering this place, which they often do, they will charge you a fine or even arrest you! So please be cautious of these laws when visiting this area. They are strictly enforced.

Since this place is not officially recognized, it can be hazardous to visit at night since it’s filled with criminals and drug addicts. So I do not recommend visiting Christiania unless you go during the day while it is open, and even then, use caution.

10) Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Garden

This is the most beautiful and historic public garden in Copenhagen. It was established by a wealthy brewery owner, Carl Jacobsen (founder of Ny Carlsberg Brewery), who created this fantastic park with an Egyptian Theme.

Today, many locals consider it the best place to visit during springtime when its gardens bloom. Many people come here to have a picnic or take some time to relax in the sun.

You will find statues and sculptures of Egyptian art from thousands of years ago and beautiful fountains, lakes, and ponds that fill this park with tranquility and splendor.

Admission to the park is inexpensive and free for children, so it’s an excellent place for families or couples to visit. I highly recommend this garden as one of Copenhagen’s many hidden treasures.

11) Christianborg Palace

This is the official residence and workplace of Queen Margrethe II, along with the rest of the royal family. It is located in central Copenhagen, one of the most famous tourist attractions to visit during your vacation!

Many different shows are performed here for tourists, and an excellent museum explains this Danish royal family’s life, traditions, and celebrations.

If you have younger children, be sure to take them to the Amalienborg Playground on the western side of this castle. This playground is designed to look like a fairy tale; it has plenty of castles and bridges for children to climb all over.

It’s a great place to take your children during the summer, and even though it is located inside Christianborg Palace, admission is free for everyone. However, this playground gets very crowded, so you may have to wait in line to enter at certain times of the day.

12) The Round Tower

This is a well-known landmark structure in Copenhagen that was built back in 1642. It is the oldest functioning observatory tower built by Christians all over Europe. This tower has been visited by countless princes, kings, and even notable figures such as Albert Einstein.

Today it is open to the public for those who wish to climb its 365 steps that take you up high into the sky, where you will have a panoramic view of Copenhagen’s city center. I highly recommend visiting this tower because it is a truly remarkable place to stay.

13) The Marble Church

This church was built in 1730 by King Christian VI due to a royal architect named Nicolai Eigtved. It is considered one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful churches, and it is even nicknamed “The Marble Church” because of its unique interior design made from white and blue marble.

This church was built to honor King Frederik V’s deceased wife, Queen Sophie Magdalene, his beloved queen for many years. Her sarcophagus is displayed inside the Marble Church at the end of the main hall.

It was built in neoclassical style; an interior made out of Carrara marble can be seen inside and outside. This church has also been well known for its many funerals that have taken place within its walls for Denmark’s royal kings and queens.

14) The Blue Planet Aquarium

This is the oldest aquarium in Copenhagen and boasts of being one of the best places to view marine life from all over the world!

You will find a wide array of sea creatures here, such as shark rays, otters, and even a beautiful collection of tropical fish.

This aquarium has a lot in store for every family member and is a great way to spend your afternoon sightseeing in Copenhagen! 15) Nyhavn Canal

Nyhavn Canal was built in 1670 to extend the harbor just north of this canal. This canal is located in downtown Copenhagen and has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1995!

This was initially built for commercial use, but now you will find that this canal is filled with tourists, pubs, and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat before continuing your sightseeing tour!

15) Christian IV’s Brewhouse

Christian IV was King of Denmark from 1588 to 1648 and was known for his great passion for beer!

Christian IV’s Brewhouse is the oldest brewery in all of Scandinavia, and it has been brewing Danish beer for over 400 years. They are known for their award-winning lager, first introduced in 1859 and still produced today!

This brewery offers tours to learn about the history behind Denmark’s oldest beer and how it is produced.

If you want to tour this historical place, I recommend booking online in advance because tickets sell out fast due to their popularity! If you don’t have time for a guided tour, then at least stop by their gift shop to pick up a six-pack of your favorite Danish beer and enjoy it at one of the nearby restaurants.

16) LEGO House

This LEGO house is made of Lego bricks, not confused with LEGOLAND theme parks. It is located in central Copenhagen and has been called “Denmark’s most photographed attraction.”

That being said, this place will make for a fantastic photo opportunity so that you can capture something truly unique and a little off the beaten path!

This LEGO palace is quite large, so it may take an hour or two to explore everything this place offers fully. I recommend planning your visit here in advance by purchasing tickets online because they often sell out quickly. Think of it like going to Disney Land or Disneyland.

17) Copenhagen Opera House

Of course, no fun things to do in Copenhagen would be complete without mentioning this architectural masterpiece!

This opera house is the latest addition to Denmark’s largest harbor, where you will find some of Copenhagen’s most famous attractions.

Architect Jean Nouvel designed the building and opened its doors in 2005. It is one of the most renowned opera houses in all of Scandinavia, and it has been voted as one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe!

I don’t think I need to say much else about this place. Still, you should visit the Copenhagen Opera House when visiting Copenhagen, Denmark. You won’t regret it because this place is astounding!

18) Thorvaldsen Museum & Sculpture Garden

This Museum was established back in the year 1848, and it primarily focuses on artwork. The most famous pieces featured at this Museum are terracotta works from the 19 th century, and you’ll find that these pieces are on display inside the sculpture garden.

The sculpture garden was built in the early 19 th century and is home to some of Denmark’s very oldest sculptures. Among the most popular pieces you’ll find here are the first statues created by Bertel Thorvaldsen.

This Museum is a great place to visit if you’re interested in seeing artwork from some legendary artists. It is also located within walking distance of the beautiful Rosenborg Castle.

19) Langelinie Promenade

For those who enjoy water activities, this beach will be a great place to visit! You can rent bikes, scooters, and rollerblades here while enjoying the view of the Copenhagen harbor.

Besides being a tourist destination, Langelinie Promenade is used for special events and festivals during summertime. It has been listed on the Danish registry of protected sites and is famous for locals to hang out.

If you want to experience what it feels like to be a local for a day, make this place one of the stops on your sightseeing tour! Langelinie Promenade is located just south of the entrance to Copenhagen Harbor along its west side.

20) Copenhagen Central Library

This library was recently updated in 2013 and boasts of being one of Denmark’s most modern libraries. It has an abundance of books that any Danish citizen and other items at your disposal can borrow.

They also offer books in different languages and an extensive map collection, which is excellent for those traveling and needing help on your route. If you’re looking for a quieter place to study, I recommend checking out this library when you are in the area!

The Copenhagen Central Library is located just northwest of Kongens Nytorv (a beautiful square), and it’s also very close to Amalienborg Palace, where Queen Margrethe II resides.

21) Legoland theme parks

Several Legoland theme parks are located worldwide, but I have only visited Billund, Denmark. This is the first theme park that I ever saw back when I was much younger, and most of my friends who have been to this particular Legoland all agree with me that it’s one of the best parks in Europe.

The Danish Legoland has an abundance of rides that people of all ages can enjoy, so it’s a great place to take kids. There is also an indoor waterpark where people can go swimming regardless of the weather conditions outside, and there are many shows that children can watch at this park.

There’s a reason why Legoland parks have been voted as some of the best theme parks in Europe for several years running! I recommend visiting this amusement park if you’re looking for fun on your trip to Denmark.

22) Amager Beach Park

You should visit this place if you enjoy spending time at the beach! It is a great place to spend your summers and offers something for everyone. (There are plenty of outdoor sports, indoor activities, food vendors, and more!)

You can find Amager Beach Park located on Amager Island in southern Copenhagen. It boasts Denmark’s largest artificial beach and is the perfect place to relax on a lovely sunny day.

23) Black Diamond Galeriet

The Black Diamond Galerie is located on the second floor of a factory building used as an armory. Nowadays, it’s an art gallery that features numerous paintings by now famous Danish artists, and I have been here several times during my visits to Copenhagen.

Many people don’t realize hidden gems scattered all across the city were used as underground bunkers during World War II. This is something unique you can experience during your visit!

24) Hans Christian Andersen Museum

If you’re a fan of the works of famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, I highly recommend visiting this Museum. It is dedicated to his many writings and displays countless works from Denmark’s most celebrated authors. Unlike other museums that charge a hefty admission price, it is very affordable to visit this Museum.

If you’re familiar with the works of Hans Christian Andersen, then you will be very pleased (and I’m sure a bit shocked) to see how small his actual writing desk was! It brings you back to realize that he accomplished so much despite having limited resources and facilities during his day.

As if that wasn’t enough, you can explore some of the islands off the main coast of the country, where you will find vast pine forests, wild horses, and relaxing seals. 1. Visit the animals at Copenhagen Zoo

Copenhagen Zoo has the claim to fame of being one of the oldest zoos in the whole of Europe and it was first opened in 1859. The zoo sprawls over 27 acres of land and you find 264 different species here as over 3,000 animals call the zoo home.

The area is made up of different sections such as the Tropical Zoo which spans 1,500 square meters and mimics the conditions of the rainforest and you will find animals like deer, snakes, and crocodiles here as well as a butterfly garden.

2. Discover Thy National Park

The church was finally closed in 1795 when the sands overtook it to the point where it could no longer be used and now only the main tower can be seen poking out of the dunes.

7. Explore the Viking burial grounds of Lindholm Høje

If you venture to Lindholm Høje you will find some of the most amazing Viking artifacts in Europe.

Once buried in the sands here, they were undiscovered for centuries before being uncovered and put on display.

The grave sites here date from the Iron Age and the Viking Age and you will find 682 graves as well as 150 ships carved from stone.

There is also a preserved village here that has stone circles and wells.

You may not realize that there are any wild horses still left in Denmark but actually they are well known on the island of Langeland which is a big hit with domestic travelers.

Less than one and a half kilometers from Rosenborg in the Frederiksstaden quarter, you'll find Rosenborg's sister palace, Amalienborg, along with its serene waterfront gardens.

The four palaces facing onto the square were originally built as homes for the nobility, but were taken over by the Royal Family after a fire at Christiansborg in 1794. The palace takes its name from Queen Sophie Amalie who had a sumptuous summer retreat on the site, which also burned down in 1689.

The area was designed to be a model society with the King as focal point and the aristocracy (the four palaces) surrounding him. Today, Queen Margrethe II and her family occupy the upper story of Christian IX Palace , and the Moltke Palace is used for official purposes. The soldiers of the Royal Guard with their bearskins and blue (on festive occasions red, white, and blue) uniforms are a unique symbol of the city.

Of particular interest are the Marble Room, a Baroque reception room, and the Knights' Hall with the Coronation Throne (used between 1871 to 1940), as well as the famous Rosenborg Tapestries, which have adorned the walls since 1693. Exquisite porcelain is also on exhibit, including the famous Flora Danica service.

Let's face it: You can't visit the Danish capital without seeing the Little Mermaid , so head along the waterfront from Nyhavn to Kastellet (less than two kilometers) and take in the iconic statue and surroundings. Many boat tours also pass by the mermaid, but seeing it on land offers a much better vantage point.

Kastellet is the former Citadel of Frederikshavn, the oldest parts of which date from 1625. The Citadel buildings are well maintained and well worth exploring. The Little Mermaid (Den lille Havfrue), which you'll see from the shore, is the official emblem of Copenhagen.

The bronze sculpture, created by Edvard Eriksen in 1913, is based on a theme from one of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, which tells the tale of a mermaid who once came up out of the depths of the sea because she'd fallen in love with a prince. Sadly, as the prince didn't reciprocate, she was forced to leave the human world and return once more to the sea.

You won't be able to get right up to the mermaid herself, perched on rocks just offshore, but there are plenty of perfect spots to pose in front of this famous statue.

Busy Town Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) is dominated by Copenhagen Town Hall (built between 1892 and 1905), which is based on a mix of Italian Renaissance and medieval Danish architecture.

For marvelous views, you can climb the tower; at 106 meters high, it is the tallest in the city. The building itself is richly adorned with sculptures and paintings.

Above the main entrance is a figure of Bishop Absalon in gilded copper, and in the Great Hall are busts of Danish notables such as Martin Nyrop (1849-1921), the architect who designed the building, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1840), Hans Christian Andersen (1805-76), and the physicist Niels Bohr (1885-1962).

The World Clock at the main entrance was designed and constructed by Jens Olsen in 1955 and shows not only the time and date, but also various astronomical constellations.

Starting out as a hippy settlement more than 40 years ago, this unique and controversial area was firstly designated as a social experiment and is now owned by the residents.

Christiania is one of Denmark's most loved tourist attractions, and each year, this "freetown" lures up to a million visitors. Admittedly, it may not be to everyone's taste, however, it is a functioning alternative society, a place where many accepted norms simply don't apply, and people live by their own rules.

Cars are banned, bicycles are the main mode of transport, and horses roam free. Highlights are the handmade houses and buildings and the large lake where children splash around with each other on hot summer days. The small shops and cafés use a special Christiania currency.

About a 20-minute drive north of Copenhagen, Bakken amusement park is a folksy version of the Tivoli , with numerous restaurants, cafés, and fun things to do — especially for younger children.

Believe it or not, this has been a leisure facility since 1583. There are no less than six roller coasters and more than 30 different rides, including a ghost train. Entrance into the park itself is free, allowing those who just want to stroll about and take in the atmosphere to do so without paying a fee.

The surrounding wood and parkland is particularly pleasant, and there are excellent train and bus links from the city-center for those who aren't driving. Nearby, you'll find Klampenborg with prestigious villas and excellent bathing.

To the west of Copenhagen, a little more than three kilometers from the city center, lies the Zoological Garden (Zoologisk Have), founded in 1859 and one of the oldest and largest zoos in Europe.

The enclosures imitate the animals' natural surroundings as closely as possible. Here, you can watch polar bears, seals, lions, and other animals being fed. At the entrance, there's an observation tower.

Favorite exhibits are the bird lake with storks and pelicans, reptile house, monkey house, and lion's den among others. Of particular interest is the Norman-Foster-designed elephant enclosure.

The best place to stay in Copenhagen is near the Old Town, where many of the major attractions are concentrated. The center of the Old Town is the Kongens Nytorv public square, with its statues, historical buildings, and cobblestone streets.

Today, the region features a variety of eateries inside its restored homes, some of which were built in the late 1600s. In fact, a few famous artists and writers formerly lived in Nyhavn, including Heinrich Gustav Ferdinand Holm (a painter and engraver best known for his Copenhagen depictions) and Hans Christian Andersen (who penned fairy tales like "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling").

Previous visitors loved grabbing a drink or bite to eat in Nyhavn, although some cautioned that prices here are high and that it was touristy. Additionally, several raved about the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which takes place in Nyhavn every July. Many past travelers also recommended signing up for one of the area's canal tours with Stromma Denmark or Netto-Badene . Both operators' tours are available in English, last about an hour and depart daily from Nyhavn. Situated in Indre By between H. C. Andersens Boulevard and King's New Square (to the west and east, respectively), Strøget is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe and Copenhagen's largest shopping area. It contains a series of interconnected streets that are lined with numerous boutiques and cafes. You'll find upscale brands like Burberry, Gucci and Louis Vuitton here, so make sure to bring your credit card.

One of Copenhagen's most iconic, yet petite, attractions is its Little Mermaid statue. Ever-so intriguing, Freetown Christiania is actually a controversial part of Copenhagen due to its completely different set of rules – resulting from the fact that it's completely independent of the Danish government. Within the hippie community that calls Christiania home, cannabis trade is abundant and accepted. You'll find a list of rules near the district's main entrance on Pusher Street, one of which is a zero-tolerance policy for violence.

The area was formerly a military base, which was abandoned, leading to it sitting empty for many years. In the early 1970s, people began squatting there – resulting in an entire community of around 1,000 with their own rules and regulations separate from the Danish government. Within Christiania's walls, you'll find plenty of creativity, art, community social gatherings, cafes, and restaurants. The buildings are colorful, often adorned with murals and other artwork.

Copenhagen's citadel, Kastellet, is one of the better preserved fortresses in the northern part of Europe. When you’re planning the perfect vacation, you don’t want to spend your time or money on a tourist trap that disappoints. To help you avoid a case of destination letdown, we turned to the treasure trove of data found in online reviews that can help savvy travelers make the most of their vacation planning.

In July 2023, we analyzed 23.2 million Google reviews of the 500 most popular tourist attractions in the world, spanning 65 countries in six continents. For each attraction, we asked a simple question: How frequently do the reviews mention the terms “tourist trap,” “overrated” or “expensive”?

We compared attractions to one another by measuring the relative frequency of these mentions, dividing the number of mentions in each case by the total number of reviews for that attraction. We break down our findings, so you are armed with the information you need before planning to visit a popular tourist destination, and offer tips on how to travel in a way that’s good for your wanderlust and your wallet.

Key findings

• The Four Corners Monument (in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah) is the No. 1 tourist trap in the world, according to our analysis.
• The Blue Lagoon in Iceland and Penang Hill in Malaysia are the top tourist traps in Europe and Asia.
• The Great Mosque of Mecca in Saudi Arabia had 397,905 reviews on Google, as of our analysis, and not a single one mentioned “tourist trap.”
• The California Academy of Sciences, Elvis Presley’s Graceland and the South Carolina Aquarium are the most overpriced attractions in the United States.
• Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Oregon, is the most overrated tourist attraction in the world.

Top 100 tourist traps worldwide

With the distinction of being the only place where four states meet — Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah — the Four Corners Monument sounds pretty cool. It’s also 30 miles from the closest gas station, so it might appeal to travelers seeking to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. However, this attraction also topped our list in terms of the percentage of disgruntled reviews. Of 10,839 reviews analyzed, 139 flagged this spot as a tourist trap.

Meanwhile, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin got the most mentions of “tourist trap” in the reviews we analyzed of any tourist attraction in the world, with 400 out 76,269 reviews flagging it as one. This spot is a popular stop for travelers because of its historical significance as a border crossing during the Cold War, when the city was split in half between West Germany and East Germany.

Top 25 tourist traps in the U.S.

Eight of the top 10 tourist traps in the world, as determined by our analysis, are in the U.S. Three of the top tourist traps involve paranormal phenomena — witches, ghosts and UFOs.

Those spots are the Salem Witch Museum in Massachusetts, Calico Ghost Town in California and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in New Mexico. Each location had a number of reviews mentioning "tourist trap," so it seems some visitors left feeling disenchanted.

Most overpriced attractions worldwide

The U.S. is home to the third most overpriced attraction in the world, according to our analysis of reviews mentioning the word “expensive,” with spots in Iceland and Canada taking first and second places. Coming in at most overpriced is the Blue Lagoon in Grindavik, with prices starting at $67 per person but nearly doubling during peak times. This is followed by the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver where tickets are $69.95 per person when you purchase them at the ticket window. The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco comes in third for an entry fee that makes consumers grumble at $49.75 for an adult ticket during a peak visiting time.

It seems that Americans feel aquariums are overpriced in general, with aquariums in South Carolina, Maryland, California and Georgia making the top 50 in our list.

California has seven of the top 25 most overpriced attractions, with Tennessee coming in next with three spots in the top 25 — including Elvis Presley’s Graceland, at No. 5 in the world.

Most overrated attractions worldwide

Unless you just really love doughnuts, one spot you might want to skip on your next vacation is Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Oregon. At least, you might want to skip it if you care about reviews, because our analysis found it to be the most overrated attraction in the world.

Rounding out the top five most overrated attractions are the following:

• The Little Mermaid in Denmark.
• The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Japan.
• The Manneken Pis sculpture fountain in Belgium.
• The Hollywood Walk of Fame in California.

Tips on how to avoid tourist traps

Get recommendations from your travel card concierge.

Your travel card may provide access to a concierge which can help with travel research, planning and booking. Consider where your rewards can take you

It’s no secret that credit card rewards can help you see the world. But are you getting the most out of your stash? Let’s consider an example using American Airlines miles.

As of the time of this writing, a flight from New York to Honolulu and back at the end of October 2023 might run you anywhere from about 53,000 AAdvantage miles to well over 100,000 AAdvantage miles. By contrast, if you were to fly from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico and back in the same time period, you might find deals in the ballpark of 24,000 or 31,000 miles. While many variables impact the exact cost, being flexible with your vacation options can save you substantially.

Plus, when opting for destinations with less sticker shock, you can still find activities and sites that are every bit as amazing as you'd find in a pricier locale. Continuing our example from above, if Hawaii's stunning rainforests initially attracted you to Honolulu, consider that Puerto Rico is home to El Yunque National Forest — the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.

If you’ve piled up the points on a card that earns transferable rewards, rather than one that’s specific to a certain airline or hotel chain , you can do even more shopping around. Compare the cost of booking award travel on the loyalty transfer partners your card offers before you commit, because the number of points or miles required can vary dramatically between different airlines.

Plus, savvy travelers know that travel credit cards sometimes offer deals, such as double value when transferring points from your card to a specific airline partner. For instance, the Bilt World Elite Mastercard® offered a deal on Aug. 1, 2023 where cardholders with Bilt Silver Status could get double the number of Virgin Red points for their Bilt points when transferring their rewards to the airline. Keeping a sharp eye out for deals like this could help your earnings take you farther than you’d normally go.

Seek out lodging that isn’t part of a mega-chain hotel collection

If you have a travel rewards credit card , check if it grants you special access to a hotel collection. For example, Capital One announced the Lifestyle Collection in mid-2024, designed to be exclusively available via Capital One Travel for people with specific Capital One cards .

The Lifestyle Collection is a list of curated boutique hotels allowing guests to stay in popular destinations but avoid the crush of an overcrowded megahotel lobby.  While your choice of lodging won’t necessarily prevent you stopping by a tourist trap, finding a great stay can make it easier for you to have a wide selection of possible vacation activities.

Methodology

In July 2023, we analyzed 23.2 million Google reviews of 500 popular tourist attractions in the world, spanning 65 countries in six continents.

We focused our analysis on mentions of certain keywords that indicate a common negative sentiment among visitors. Those keywords are: “tourist trap”, “expensive”, and “overrated”.

It’s true that a few uses of these keywords do not fit in a negative context (e.g. “It’s kind of a tourist trap but we loved it!”). Based on our analysis, these positive instances of usage were not frequent enough to be statistically significant, and in any case, they are consistent enough across attractions to cancel each other out.

We began with a list of 1,600 tourist attractions for consideration, before narrowing to our final 500. We removed from this list, with only a few exceptions, all national parks, state parks, lakes, and mountains. We also removed sports stadiums. The list was further reduced based on the total number of reviews submitted for each attraction.

All reviews analyzed were written in English.

As mentioned in the UNWTO study, the first half of 2023 saw a revival in international travel, and the same pattern is anticipated for the months ahead. Two more countries that travel the most and spend the most on international tourism have been added to the list to reflect current trends.

The happiest country in the world , Finland, also deserves to be on this list for spending a lot on outbound travel. The Finnish people like exploring their own country as the nation is full of natural beauty, history, stunning water bodies, and modern marvels, but they prioritize traveling to different international destinations. Sweden is the most popular foreign travel destination for them followed by Estonia, Spain, and Norway.

From eateries where travelers can try tasty cuisine to fun and exciting activities and attractions that leave visitors amazed, there is so much to do and see in Denmark . Yet, residents travel to neighboring countries for leisure and to explore new international destinations. As mentioned in GlobalData’s report, there is a steep rise in international tourism in Denmark. And Danish residents travel the most to other European countries, specifically Sweden, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy.

Even though China has eased some of its COVID restrictions and is moving toward a tourism recovery, outbound travel has recovered more quickly than inbound travel to the area. Although China has countless beautiful beaches, mountains, islands, cities, and many natural and modern wonders , Chinese people also love to travel abroad. They prefer visiting nearby Japan, Thailand, and Korea for a short international trip, though other popular destinations include the Philippines, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

According to GlobalData's report , outbound travel from Canada in 2022 increased by 312% to reach 22.3 million, the highest number since 2019. Although Canada is full of fantastic destinations, Canadians, after the pandemic, prefer to spread their wings and travel to distant regions, particularly in the United States, Thailand, Indonesia, and Europe. However, the majority of Canada's top ten international travel destinations are in the United States.

Following the Japanese government's decision to lower its travel warning for 34 countries and territories, Japan's outbound market is regaining strength, with an increasing number of people traveling abroad. According to data from Japan's Immigration Service Agency, there were 1045.7% more Japanese tourists abroad in February 2023 than in the same month in 2002. Furthermore, South Korea, the United States, Thailand, Singapore, and Taiwan are among the top international destinations for Japanese travelers.

Singapore is a traveler's dream destination with numerous breathtaking natural beauties as well as of man-made marvels . However, the people of this lovely nation also look for chances to travel to nearby countries for a short trip and faraway destinations for a long break. According to the e-Conomy SEA 2022 report , 52% of Singaporeans intend to travel abroad in 2023, an increase of 13% from 2022. And the majority of them spend three to four days on vacation in Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Taiwan, which are their preferred international vacation destinations.

Since restrictions were lifted, outbound travel in Austria has continued to skyrocket. It now seems more people are trying to get out of the country than ever. For Austrians, Croatia is the favorite destination for outbound travel, although Italy and Germany are also favorite destinations for according to Statista’s outbound tourist numbers for Austria in 2021 .

Switzerland

There are plenty of interesting things to enjoy in Switzerland , but that does not stop millions of people from leaving the country every year and spending their vacations in European destinations. In 2019 before the pandemic, approximately 19.8 million people traveled abroad, and their favorite destinations are France and Germany.

Italy has everything a person needs, from a destination, from archaeological sites to beautiful beaches and delicious food , and while those are popular among Italian travelers, they also love to travel abroad and check out some of their favorite destinations. In July, outbound travelers from Italy amounted to 3.2 million, and Romania was the country’s most beloved travel destination. Spain and France, however, are popular destinations among Italian travelers.

France has been responsible for the most outbound travels from Belgium. In 2019, approximately 4.5 million trips originating from Belgium landed in France, and although the number may have reduced, one can still expect this trend as more people resume outbound travel.
