Top 5 airlines serving from Toronto to Costa Rica

Boarding was very expedite. The chairs are fixed you can't rest comfortable during the flight.

It is better at the jfk than my home country. It was very easy and everything was on time.

There is no food. There is no in-inflight entertainment. The seats are cardboard. The airline is a living hellscape.

My experience was amazing! They helped my elderly mother board on early through a wheelchair and were accommodating to have us sit together since our seats were in different locations. When landing at the airport in GUA they were very helpful with full of hospitality.

I flew with my service dog unfortunately they didn’t allow it to flight on the canine, but ok, the only problem was that when I arrived to Quito it took 1 hour to deliver my dog, they were supposed to deliver it the moment we get off the airplane.

No complimentary snacks, food, beverages (even water) blanket and pillow on a 6 hours long flight (economy comfort). A low form of nickeling and diming. Lost a recurring pessanger over a soda. Will never fly Avianca again.

Every food and beverage has to be paid and the seat was not confortable. They even gave water.

Flight attendants to show up on time, offer drinks and food.

Avianca: you pay for a high-end flight and you fly like a low (very low) cost!

The worst airline, the crew so mean and rude, everything was a nightmare, if I start to write, I'll never end

Super unproffesional flight . Flight attendants were unproffesional. I could hear them gossiping about theor boyfriends the whole trip

The connecting flight lay over was 4.00 hours, the gate agent booked me on the next flight which was about to depart at no extra cost.

The ticket price was reasonable, food was okay, not the best. I would use the service again.

Actually the flight was on time. New plane, food was okay but not great.

Old plane, hard seats, 1.30 hours delay, while seating on the plane waiting for departure.

Great boarding. Everything was on time. Plane was a bit old and the crew could have provided better drink service.

Boarding was a little chaotic but it was a very large flight. It just wasn’t fast. And there was no noticeable difference between zones boarding.

Crew was pleasant. Aircraft was very dated and uncomfortable for our nearly 4 hour flight. We were in row 17 and they ran out of purchasable food by the time they got to us.

We were lucky enough to arrive at the right time. The staff at YYZ did our complete check in and luggage tags for us. Even made sure we knew where we were to head next and how to get there. It truly was one of the best and easiest check inside. Thanks team.

Compagnie efficace et bons prix. Les sièges en classe club pourraient être plus confortables.

I wish that seats closer to the front of the plan were available, but when I booked the flight the seats were VERY expensive so I did not book seats at that time. The day before flying only seats at the back of the plane were available. It takes so long to board the plane and empty the plane on arrival due to SO many roller bags.

Crew was rude.didn’t even say hi or welcome to board

Nothing special. Unacceptable wait for baggage on arriving in Calgary

Departure delay on a late night flight. Made us even later. Tired but got home.

Westjet forced me to put my carry-on baggage in check-in probably because I was assigned seat 23A (the last row seat), which had no cabin space, which is unfair. I wanted to carry on my luggage so that I don't have to wait at the airport for my luggage. Also, because there was no cabin space, I was forced to keep my laptop bag under the seat, which I didn't want to as I was carrying 2 laptops and charger. The airline should basically tell people that if you are assigned a last row seat, then you are not allowed a cabin baggage or a personal item.

Easy processing, flight time was quick and staff was professional and kind.

It was delayed by two ours very full no room to move

They seem to have squeezed out a little more legroom in these planes! It was very nice to not have to fold in half to fit in the seats!

Flight late …60 minutes No food No wifi No entertainment system A disaster!!!

No real issues just wasnt able to hear / understand any announcements flight attendant was making but everything else was really good- ended up checking my carry on case for free which made deboarding quicker. I would fly West Jet for all my flights.

The crew was doing their best on an old plane needing updating. Chairs that creaked and wouldn’t stay in position. My tray table was unusable as was on-board entertainment due the audio needing usb earphones (that were not provided). Prior to boarding in Toronto and despite being scheduled for a wheelchair and assistance, we were dropped off by clubcar without a wheelchair which I found myself by a gate. Due to no boarding gate assigned at that time we waited and when it was, it subsequently was moved from 64 to 95. No help could be found so I pushed my husband’s chair to that furthest gate in the airport at the highest speed possible for a 73 year old. And by that I mean I ran. It was a very stressful experience.

Wifi wasn't working on one of the UA flights after boarding.

Leg room was lacking. Legs crammed into seat in front.

T hey did a great job. Flight was on time .

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

Crew was not very helpful. They forgot to serve me coffee and had to wait for a long time.It looked as if they were not very happy with what they were doing.

The flight I was connecting with waited for me even though my 1st flight was late. I really appreciated that.

The seat is too hard and my back and bottom are having servers pain

There was no lounge for passengers waiting before boarding the aircraft at F65, so passengers are just sitting on the floor or just spread everywhere the premises before boarding.

Great crew, friendly. Found the trip long just sitting with no onboard entertainment

Flight was delayed, jeopardizing the following connections. Food was terrible. Crew was great.

This was the first AC flight in a long time that we experienced no delays or frustrations. The gate attendant was extremely polite and accommodating to my husband who has Parkinson’s disease which made boarding extremely stress free. Flight departed ON TIME and was a smooth ride. If only all my AC experiences could be like this.

Great experience on this Air Canada flight. Everyone was polite and respectful, even the passengers are very polite.

My wife and I especially liked the fact that the Toronto agent went beyond expectation to allow my wife and I to sit together. There was no option for us when we booked our seats. Very thankful!

I didn’t like the fact that all the customs officers went to lunch so I was in line for 90 minutes due to where the staff directed me. We were told three very different reasons for why the plane was delayed. It was a crowded plane with difficult storage situations for the Carry On bags. The Air Canada airline staff were all very good and professional. I was so disappointed in my cheese and fruit box as the cheese had molded and the fruit wasn’t fresh so I couldn’t eat the majority of the food. This was the last meal I could find as the restaurants had closed when I got in to my destination. I think you could work on improving the food quality.

Once again my complaint is how close the seats are together. Also, the bathrooms were not very clean by the second half of the flight.

Excellent in flight service, perhaps the best we've ever had. Business class feels tired and needs improvement to compete with other airlines. The food looked good but tasted terrible. Check in was quick, the flight arrived early and our luggage was on our flight with us.

Food could be better, lie flat seats could be a little more cushioned. The business class dinner before the flight is excellent at Toronto airport

Food could be better, lie flat seats could be a little more cushioned

The staff were so kind and helpful. We flew back from NY with another airline and it was horrible. We will always stick with Air Canada as everything was far better!

When it comes to flying from Toronto to Costa Rica, there are several airlines to choose from. The major airlines that fly this route include Air Canada, United Airlines, Delta, and American Airlines.

However, the best airline to fly with depends on your individual preferences. If you want to save money, Air Canada is likely your best bet. If you prefer a more luxurious experience, you may want to consider United Airlines or Delta.

2. Direct or Connecting Flights?

One of the first decisions you will need to make when flying from Toronto to Costa Rica is whether to take a direct or connecting flight. While a direct flight would be the easiest option, there are no direct flights available between the two cities.

This means that you will have to take one or more connecting flights. The most popular route is to fly from Toronto to Houston or Miami, and then onto San Jose, Costa Rica. A connecting flight is generally not as convenient but can save you money.

3. What to Expect at the Airport

When arriving at the airport in Toronto, you should expect to go through security and customs before boarding your flight. Make sure to arrive at the airport at least 2-3 hours before your scheduled departure time to avoid any delays.

Also, be aware that you may need to be vaccinated against certain diseases, such as yellow fever, depending on where you are travelling from. Finally, make sure you pack light. Many airlines charge extra for baggage, and you do not want to be bogged down with heavy suitcases.

5. Alternative Modes of Transportation

While flying is the most common way to get to Costa Rica from Toronto, it is not the only option. You could also consider driving from Toronto to the United States and then catching a flight from a closer airport.

Another option is to take a bus or train to a nearby city and then fly from there. However, these options will likely take longer and can be more expensive in the long run.

Tips for booking a Costa Rica all-inclusive vacation from Toronto

trips to costa rica from toronto

1. Pick the Right Time to Visit

Costa Rica has a humid and tropical climate, so it’s important to plan your trip during the dry season (December to April). During this time, you can enjoy clear skies and sunny days without worrying about getting caught in the rain. It’s recommended to book your all-inclusive vacation package at least 3 to 6 months in advance to get the best deals.

2. Choose the Right All-inclusive Package

There are numerous all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica catering to different tastes and budgets. When choosing a package, consider the resort’s location, amenities, and activities.

Some resorts may offer activities like zip-lining, kayaking, snorkelling or hiking, while others may be more focused on relaxation and wellness. It’s also important to read reviews from other travellers to get an idea of the amenities and services provided by the resort.

3. Pack Smart

Costa Rica is a laid-back country, so you don’t need to bring much more than lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes. However, make sure you pack essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, and a water bottle.

If you’re planning on doing adventure activities, it’s recommended to bring a waterproof camera or GoPro to capture those special moments.

4. Explore the Natural Wonders

Costa Rica is known for its stunning natural beauty, and it’s a destination that revolves around eco-tourism. Take advantage of the activities offered by your resort but also venture beyond its gates to see more of the country’s natural wonders.

Visit the Arenal Volcano, go zip-lining through the cloud forest, or take a boat tour through Tortuguero National Park where you’re likely to spot monkeys, toucans, and crocodiles.

5. Immerse Yourself in the Local Culture

Costa Rica is a country with a rich cultural heritage, and it’s worth learning more during your visit. Try the local cuisine, visit traditional markets and cultural centres, or learn some Spanish phrases to communicate with the locals. You'll find meals provided for you, so you'll always be nourished and ready for the next adventure, whether you're trying a delicious breakfast or capping off the day with a professionally prepared dinner.

What are some of the best spots for all-inclusive vacations in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is packed full of unforgettable destinations, and the hardest part of planning may be deciding where exactly you want to go. If you favour a more laid-back atmosphere, you may want to book your stay in Cahuita . It's famous for the black-sand beaches that make it easy to relax. Of course, a trip to San Jose tends to be much more energetic, with easy access to outdoor adventure and plenty of opportunities to explore local history in the city.

What to expect from an all-inclusive vacation in Costa Rica

During an all-inclusive vacation in Costa Rica, you can expect supreme relaxation among the country's stunning beaches, and you'll find many family-friendly all-inclusive resorts. Golf is also common, so you'll always have plenty to enjoy from an all-inclusive resort here.

What are some benefits when booking an all-inclusive vacation?

When you book an all-inclusive vacation, you'll have the benefit of knowing the cost of the entire trip in advance. This makes it notably easy to keep your 2024 budget in check without having to worry about any surprise costs during your trip, as your activities, food and accommodation will already be taken care of. Plus, an all-inclusive vacation offers the freedom to simply enjoy everything that your booking covers as you see fit whether you want to explore every inch of your resort or simply relax on the beach all day.

Can I book an all-inclusive vacation with airfare and meals?

Airfare and meals are easy to get in conjunction with your all-inclusive vacation to Costa Rica, with meals, in particular, being fairly standard. You can check any all-inclusive resort or accommodation page to see exactly what kind of meal plan they have available. Booking your flight alongside the accommodation is easy as well, as Expedia is your one-stop shop for it all. In fact, booking a package deal with an all-inclusive trip including airfare could lead to savings of up to 40%.

Why should I book a Costa Rica all-inclusive vacation that's adults-only?

By booking an adults-only all-inclusive vacation to Costa Rica , you can relax among the soft sands and inviting beaches in quiet tranquillity without any children running around or splashing by the pool. Every aspect of the experience is defined by peaceful relaxation except for the parts that are meant to be a bit more upbeat, such as the onsite nightclubs that several adults-only resorts in Costa Rica have.

Can I book all-inclusive packages?

Packages are among the best ways to experience all-inclusive vacations, and they allow you to truly enjoy the benefits of all-inclusivity by booking everything from your experience to your flight in advance. Prices may even get better the closer you get to your travel date, so having flexible travel dates is always useful when booking packages.

Can I book cheap all-inclusive trips?

Yes, cheap vacations that are all-inclusive are easy to find if you sort your search results by price, as that will automatically put the most affordable options at the top of your search results. Remember, the sort-by-price feature is available no matter what other filters you have activated, so you can search for cheap all-inclusive vacations to Mexico and Central America even if you plan on filtering for 4- or 5-star accommodation options. A wide range of options is available, with the cheapest being around CA $697.

What should I look for with 5-star all-inclusive vacations?

When booking a luxurious 5-star, all-inclusive vacation in Costa Rica, you'll want to look out for high-end amenities that can make your vacation unforgettable, such as infinity pools and spa facilities. Look at Hotel Riu Palace Costa Rica , for example, which offers an all-inclusive experience defined by 4 outdoor pools, a sauna, windsurfing and a full-service spa. Secrets Papagayo is another great option that's adults-only with 4 restaurants onsite, beach yoga, a full-service spa, pilates classes and a steam room.

What goes into a good family-friendly all-inclusive vacation to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica vacation packages that are all-inclusive for the family feature activities and amenities that adults and kids alike can enjoy, including pools, kids' clubs and game rooms. CC Beach Front Hotel boasts soundproof rooms, a special kids' pool and toys and games available for your little ones. Bahia del Sol Beach Front Boutique Hotel goes so far as to offer babysitting services in addition to extra beds and a kids' pool.

How can I find the best deals on all-inclusive vacations?

To find the best deals, you'll want to take advantage of Costa Rica's off-season, which typically runs from early summer to mid-December. The summer heat and relatively frequent rains keep package prices relatively low, as availability is much more widespread compared to the busy season.

Can I book an all-inclusive package that's fully refundable?

Yes, some all-inclusive packages are fully refundable, and you can tell which qualify by looking for the green text marking them as such on your search results page. You may also want to filter for this specifically if it's something you'd rather not book without.

Why should I book an all-inclusive package vacation with Expedia?

Booking with Expedia makes it easy to cover multiple aspects of your vacation at once, including flights, accommodation and activities, with potential package discounts available as well. If you're an Expedia Rewards member, you may be entitled to additional savings by earning points on every eligible purchase that can then be put towards discounts on subsequent trips. Why Costa Rica Tops Every Traveler’s Bucket List

According to the Costa Rican Tourism Board, over 1.7 million international tourists flocked to this Central American gem in 2019. The majority? Well, our fellow North Americans from the United States and Canada. And it's no wonder why!

Discover the Gems of Costa Rica

What makes Costa Rica a must-visit? Let's dive into some spots Kevin Erickson swears by!

Manuel Antonio National Park

Imagine stepping into a vibrant world where tropical forests melt seamlessly into the Pacific. This is Manuel Antonio National Park, a gem on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast. Spanning just over 16 square kilometers, it may be one of the country's smallest parks, yet it's undeniably among the most popular — and for good reasons.

As you traverse its well-maintained trails, you're embraced by dense rainforests teeming with diverse flora and fauna. It's a haven for birdwatchers aiming to catch a glimpse of motmots, tanagers, and toucans. But the show-stealers here? Monkeys! Four different species call this park home: the mischievous white-faced capuchins, the laid-back howlers, the elusive squirrel monkeys , and the nocturnal night monkeys.

The park doesn't just cater to wildlife enthusiasts. Beachcombers are in for a treat, too. With its crescent-shaped, white-sand beaches backed by coconut palms, the coastline here is right out of a postcard. Playa Manuel Antonio, with its tranquil waters, is ideal for swimming or simply lounging under the sun. But if you fancy something more secluded, Playa Gemelas and Playa Puerto Escondido, though a bit more of a hike, are worth every step.

With its mesmerizing combination of rich biodiversity, panoramic views, and pristine beaches, Manuel Antonio National Park embodies Costa Rica's pura vida spirit in every way. Whether you're an adventurer, a nature lover , or a relaxation seeker, this national park promises an experience you won't easily forget.

Arenal Volcano

Set against the verdant backdrop of Costa Rica's Northern Plains, the majestic Arenal Volcano stands tall, commanding awe and admiration from all who venture near. This stratovolcano, characterized by its almost symmetrical conical shape, has been one of the country's most active volcanoes, with its most notorious eruption occurring back in 1968. Since then, it's become a beacon for travelers, researchers, and adventure enthusiasts worldwide .

Surrounding the mighty Arenal is a lush rainforest that harbors a rich array of wildlife. From the elusive jaguar and vibrant toucans to the mischievous coatis, nature thrives in this fertile region. It's not just the wildlife that's abundant here; the flora is equally captivating. Giant ferns, orchids , and countless other tropical plants create a vibrant tapestry, making every trek a sensory delight.

But Arenal isn't just about the spectacle above ground. Below the earth's surface, geothermal activity heats up numerous springs, leading to the creation of natural hot springs. These mineral-rich waters , found in luxury resorts and hidden river spots alike, offer the perfect antidote to a day of hiking or adventuring.

As night descends, if you're lucky, you might even witness the orange glow of lava flowing down the volcano's slope or the sky lit up by its fiery eruptions. These natural fireworks have diminished in recent years, but the very possibility adds an element of suspense and thrill to any visit.

With activities ranging from white-water rafting in the nearby rivers, hiking around the lava fields , or simply soaking in a hot spring while gazing up at the imposing silhouette of the volcano, Arenal provides a quintessential Costa Rican experience that blends adventure with nature's tranquility. It's a testament to the raw, untamed beauty that Costa Rica encapsulates.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Unlocking hidden secrets.

Kevin Erickson reveals some lesser-known wonders of this paradise:

Tortuguero National Park

Dubbed the "Amazon of Costa Rica", it's where sea turtles take center stage. A nesting spectacle you shouldn't miss!

Rio Celeste

Tucked away in the heart of Tenorio Volcano National Park, Rio Celeste is one of Costa Rica's best-kept natural secrets . This river, translating to " Sky Blue River ," isn't named whimsically. Its waters boast an ethereal, almost surreal, shade of turquoise that looks as though the heavens themselves lent their color to it.

Legend has it that when the gods finished painting the sky, they dipped their brushes into this very river, giving it its celestial hue. But science offers a more grounded explanation: a unique chemical reaction between sulfur and calcium carbonate, which results in the mesmerizing blue tint.

As you embark on the trail that leads to Rio Celeste, every step becomes a sensory experience. The rustling of leaves, the distant call of birds, and the underfoot crunch—all culminate in the breathtaking view of the river, especially at "Los Teñideros," where two clear water streams meet and magically transform into the vivid blue spectacle.

But Rio Celeste isn't just about the river alone. Along its course, there's the magnificent Rio Celeste Waterfall, where the azure waters cascade down with fervor, creating a sight so magical it seems straight out of a fairy tale. Nearby are the hot springs and the "Borbollones" or bubbling spots, where you can witness the earth's raw geothermal power .

For those seeking an experience that's both mystical and grounding, Rio Celeste offers just that. It serves as a powerful reminder of nature's uncanny ability to surprise and enchant, and why places like these deserve our utmost respect and protection.

La Amistad National Park

One of the five UNESCO World Heritage sites, this park is a testament to Costa Rica's commitment to conservation and biodiversity.

The Costa Rican Appeal

The Costa Rican Appeal is best described in a quote from Lonely Planet!

"Costa Rica is a wonderland of natural attractions, with volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests, and unique wildlife. This is a country that appeals as much to birdwatchers and luxury-focused travelers as it does to surfers and backpackers." - Lonely Planet
