What AI means for travel—now and in the future

“Revenge travel.” It’s what a lot of people are doing these days—hitting the runways in big numbers to make up for travel time lost during the pandemic. On this episode of The McKinsey Podcast , McKinsey partners Alex Cosmas and Vik Krishnan join global editorial director Lucia Rahilly to discuss a new report on travel in the age of AI : what the technology’s promise and pitfalls are and what it may mean for the travel industry overall.

The promise of AI

Lucia Rahilly: Much of the research for the report drew from interviews with executives at 17 companies across five types of travel businesses. One of those executives is Luca Zambello, CEO of Jurny—an AI-fueled hospitality platform. He says AI will be the new normal.

Luca Zambello: We’re at the very beginning of the hockey stick. Economically, we are at the start of what is potentially the biggest technology disruption that humanity has ever seen.

Lucia Rahilly: So everyone is talking about the disruptive juggernaut that is AI, and particularly gen AI [generative AI]. At a super-high level, and acknowledging that we’re still in early days, what do we expect this to mean for the travel industry in particular?

Vik Krishnan: The travel industry is unquestionably going to be significantly disrupted by AI. Whether it’s gen AI or other forms of AI that have been around for some time remains to be seen. It’s quite clear that if you work through the customer journey and the process of trying to understand where you want to go, where you want to stay, what are the things you want to see, how you want to plan your day-by-day itinerary, gen AI significantly eases the process of travel discovery.

If you then step into what this means for travel suppliers, which includes airlines and hotels and cruises and car rentals and rideshare providers, the promise of AI is very much to help them deliver on the promises, both explicit and implicit, that they make to their customers.

Gen AI significantly eases the process of travel discovery.

What I mean by that is, very often, the expectations of travel are that your flight is on time, your bags get delivered to you safely, you then get to your hotel, your hotel room is available to check into when you get there, and you have a room that provides exactly what you asked for. That baseline expectation is one that many travel companies have historically struggled to meet.

What AI can do is help airlines ensure that planes are on time. It can help hotels ensure that what they deliver in terms of staffing and the product promise is consistent with what they advertise in their marketing and branding strategies.

Alex Cosmas: Not only is travel and hospitality the world’s largest sector, but it’s actually the most intimate sector. That means the answer for each of us to what a good experience looks like—whether I’m traveling for leisure or for business—is, by definition, fundamentally different. And the promise of AI has been to take the pattern of history, take the pattern of millions, and boil that down to the individual response that is relevant to me as a segment of one.

Nowhere is that promise needed more than in travel, where the experience should be a segment of one. That’s what makes it magical. To be clear, AI is already being applied in the travel sector in spades—specifically, in the operation of schedule assets and the optimized allocation of rooms and crews. That’s been true for decades, and it’s only getting better.

But the customer-facing applications of AI are only now really becoming next-generation. And for the most part, in travel, the best AI applications will largely be opaque to customers, because they’ll still be delivered through the mediums that customers prefer: often through humans, through the front line, through desk agents, through guest agents.

AI is already being applied in the travel sector in spades—specifically, in the operation of schedule assets and the optimized allocation of rooms and crews.

That’s ideally the promise. But the starting point is to say we can’t suddenly expect that customers will prefer to interact through more digital channels than they have in the past. Travel is a very human-centric business. And so the best AI, the best models, will be delivered through traditional channels.

How AI can change travel—for the better

Lucia Rahilly: What kind of value might come from using gen AI in the travel industry?

Alex Cosmas: Our latest estimates suggest that gen AI alone, across sectors, is bound to unlock $2 trillion to $4 trillion of incremental value.

Lucia Rahilly: Wow.

Alex Cosmas: Therefore, not surprisingly, capital is chasing the disruptive sector of AI.

Lucia Rahilly: What are some good examples of products that customers might expect to be using or that might be in the background enhancing customers’ experiences in the future?

Vik Krishnan: Imagine the last time any of you tried to book a trip. You probably started on a search engine such as Google, or you started at an online travel agent such as Expedia, or you started at an actual supplier website if you had some certainty on what airline you wanted to fly or which hotel you wanted to stay at. You probably started with a little box where you put in your destination, you put in your approximate dates, and then you had the search engine present to you a series of results that may or may not have met your needs.

What we’re imagining in a future with gen AI or AI in general is that you start with something much more free-form and say, for example, “I’m looking to plan a trip with my family to New Orleans for a week in October. Can you help me find a hotel that has a pool for my seven-year-old and is within walking distance of the French Quarter?”

Wouldn’t that experience be much easier in terms of trying to figure out where you want to stay and what you want to do, as opposed to getting a list of a thousand hotels in an order that may or may not meet your specific preferences and what you actually want out of that trip? It is one of the most obvious examples wherein customers can see a real difference in what gen AI can do to help them with the travel discovery process.

Alex Cosmas: The other application of AI that I’m excited about is this: every customer gives tells. They drop digital breadcrumbs of things they like and don’t like when they bounce off of the page of a dot-com when they’re shopping; when they abandon a cart; when they return less frequently to search; when they arrive on a page only to check a single itinerary on a single day, on a single fare, rather than browsing for 20 minutes.

All of these are small tells that we as consumers provide travel brands. And so the ability to record, “I actually know what Alex is keen on in general and frankly less keen on and less likely to convert on,” and turn that into relevant offers is really important.

AI is only part of the answer

Lucia Rahilly: Where are we in terms of companies really embracing the use of this next-gen AI and other related technologies?

Alex Cosmas: We’re pretty far down the path of companies both embracing traditional AI and experimenting with gen AI. Very few of the airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and suppliers that I’ve interacted with are not already embracing deployment and actively experimenting with advanced tech. It’s only going to grow.

But there is risk. More is not always better. Faster is not always better. There’s a bit of, let’s say, a cautionary tale that we’ve learned from other sectors, which is that first off, AI is only part of the answer.

I like to say it doesn’t matter if you got the answer right if you got the delivery wrong.

The digital-delivery mechanism is how I go about delivering the answer: a mobile app, a push notification, an e-commerce experience, a kiosk, digital signage, or data just given to the front line. Those mechanisms are as equally important as or, I’d argue, even more important than the predictive and gen AI models behind them.

Vik Krishnan: To build on Alex’s point about getting the delivery wrong, many of you listening have probably been on an airplane in the last year. How many times have you experienced the outcome of landing, pulling toward the gate, stopping short on the tarmac somewhere, and it turns out the gate’s not available yet. Therefore, you have to wait for the other aircraft to taxi out, so your plane can then pull into the gate.

The reality is that putting together an operational execution plan involves data from so many different sources that aren’t necessarily pulled together in a large model. So it doesn’t necessarily enable or unlock this type of orchestration. And this is where AI can be enormously helpful.

There are companies out there that try to understand turning an aircraft, which is the process of essentially getting it from arrival to departure for the next flight. That involves actions both above the wing—for example, getting passengers off and onto the plane, getting the aircraft catered—and below the wing—for example, getting bags on and off the plane.

It involves refueling aircraft. It involves a number of other maintenance-related and ground-handling-related activities that many consumers don’t see. All of that is an extremely delicately orchestrated ballet that happens at an airport every single day, while involving multiple third parties and several different suppliers. It involves a fuel provider. It involves a ground handler. In some instances, it involves a different gate agent than the airline itself. That orchestration requires data and communication of very, very large volumes of information.

There are companies out there that are now saying, “We can actually identify when, during an aircraft turn, something didn’t happen according to schedule.” In other words, that catering truck didn’t pull in three minutes after arrival as it was expected to, which induced a delay. And that delay then allowed for a replanning of the entire turn process, so as to deliver an on-time departure. AI has an extremely large role to play in helping deliver on that promise in a way that suppliers have historically struggled to.

Don’t be AI stranger

Lucia Rahilly: In order to deliver on that process, understanding the data is critical. Here’s Ella Alkalay Schreiber, the GM of fintech at Hopper.

Ella Alkalay Schreiber: Machine learning is important, gen AI is important, predictive AI is important—but the actual challenge is to understand the data, ask the right questions, read prediction versus actual, and do this in a timely manner. The actual challenge is the human thinking, the common sense.

Lucia Rahilly: “Know your customer” is really a business axiom at this point. What does understanding your customers mean specifically for the travel industry?

Alex Cosmas: It means a few things. AI models learn the same way humans learn. It’s a test-and-learn process. I ask a question. I observe a behavior. That reinforces either my false or positive conception of who you are and what makes you tick. If you can’t measure cause and effect precisely, then avoid running an experiment entirely.

This is what our general advice is to our clients. I’d rather they experiment correctly on something small than swing for the fences and have no idea where the ball lands. That’s particularly true in microexperiments, where I have individual customers, where I provide individual treatments, but I have to be able to measure the response. If you can’t measure it, don’t bother. Focus your energy and resources on a different experiment.

This is what our general advice is to our clients. I’d rather they experiment correctly on something small than swing for the fences and have no idea where the ball lands.

If a brand, for example, doesn’t have the digital tech to be able to send a tailored offer to me as an individual, then you don’t really need to know my personal willingness to pay. In that case, stick to the microsegment or the macrosegment and take action that way. If you can’t send a personalized message without making it feel generic, then don’t.

Vik Krishnan: The experience of hyper-personalization has to feel authentic. So in other words, a flight attendant coming up to you and saying, “Hey, I know you normally like a Diet Coke with a slice of lime. Is that what you’d like this time?” is different from presuming what your preferred drink might be. That might be an example of how AI actually delivers on hyper-personalization, but with a bit of a human touch so it doesn’t appear creepy.

Lucia Rahilly: Both of you are deep in this industry. Any examples that come to mind of companies that are really doing AI right? And if so, how?

Vik Krishnan: Hotels that actually understand or acknowledge your past history of staying at that specific property—that’s quite a personal touch I really appreciate. But the reality is many hotels struggle to even understand basic facts such as the frequency, duration, and purpose of a recent stay. Many hotels don’t easily make that type of information available to their frontline staff. And so empowering those employees to use that information to deliver a hyper-personalized greeting or experience is a good example of companies using AI well.

Alex Cosmas: If done right, the frontline workforce should look and feel like superheroes powered by AI. There’s a luxury fashion retailer that arms its sales associates with iPads to link shoppers to the styles and the sizes they searched for online. That’s pretty cool. Now, augment that with the propensity models in the background that give the agent a steer to what a customer wants, and suddenly they appear clairvoyant. Think about that application in travel. There are far more interactions on average in a travel journey.

So as consumers, how do we preserve the magic of travel, which is more about heads-up time and being immersed in our surroundings, rather than about heads-down time and researching on a device? It means more agents who surprise and delight; say, “Welcome back”; say, “Happy birthday”; know you arrived earlier than planned; and swap the room preemptively so you could get in and get on your way. And that’s what we call knowing your customers like you know your friends.

I’ll share one example. When I check into a hotel, I really don’t like the kiosk and the app check-in. But I love it for checking out. For other customers, the complete inverse is true. My hotel can know that. It certainly knows how I check in and check out. It should act on that or understand the why, just as you understand your friends. This is the test-and-learn experiment that we talked about earlier and that most suppliers can begin right now.

AI and talent: What’s next?

Lucia Rahilly: Alex, that makes a very nice segue to Christiaan Hen, chief customer officer at Assaia, talking about frontline talent using AI as an assistant.

Christiaan Hen: Sometimes, people say automation might be a risk to people’s jobs, but that’s not the case here, because there are not going to be enough people to do these jobs in the first place. I like to see it as we’re equipping people with the right tools to do their jobs in a better way to accommodate for the additional workload that is coming.

Lucia Rahilly: This clip invokes the palpable fear that AI and automation will eliminate people’s jobs. We hear that time and again. How do you see these advanced technologies changing things for the front line in the travel industry?

Vik Krishnan: I see technology helping frontline employees do a better job more than I see it eliminating those jobs. We don’t necessarily see, for example, AI reducing flight attendant staffing any time soon, because those flight attendants are on the airplane to provide primarily for your safety, followed by the guest experience.

We see AI in many instances allowing those flight attendants to deliver a better customer experience, because they know that passenger in seat number 17C better as a result of the information provided to them. But it’s not replacing their jobs.

In certain pockets of the economy, technology and AI will end up replacing people. The reality in travel, though, is that the quality of the guest or passenger experience for so many people is tied to human interaction. Consequently, we don’t necessarily see a large-scale replacement of people here by technology and AI.

Alex Cosmas: Let’s look at the facts for a moment. Post-COVID-19, the travel sector employs 12 percent fewer staff than pre-COVID-19. And that’s not necessarily by choice. It is hard to find folks with the hospitality gene who genuinely want to deliver for guests, engage with them, and serve at the highest level day in and day out.

That’s part of the reason we see a smaller workforce in travel today than we have in the past. It takes twice as long, an average of five to six weeks, to fill roles as it did before the pandemic. Those with that hospitality gene would love nothing more than spending less time fixing broken itineraries, fixing issues that frankly could be automated. They’d rather spend their energy serving, which is what travel and hospitality is all about.

It should be a net-positive growth. The travel sector itself should grow as a result, creating jobs. We estimate the travel sector to grow at roughly 6 percent over the next decade, which is twice the rate of the overall economy.

Lucia Rahilly: Could AI and related technologies help with training folks who don’t come by that gene naturally but could be trained to fill those roles more efficiently?

Alex Cosmas: Absolutely. We’re already seeing applications of virtual reality, augmented reality, and AI coming together to offer more efficient ways to enhance and accelerate employee training, because you can throw live, immersive scenarios in front of employees at a higher clip than they would get organically on the job.

Oftentimes, the same is true not just of the front line but also of training corporate and call center employees. AI can learn from the patterns of thousands upon thousands of call-ins and transcripts—which no single human can ever be expected to go through—boil them down to the top ten core issues and suggest outcomes that seem to resolve 70 percent of situations. That’s the power of AI in training.

Lucia Rahilly: Alex, you mentioned virtual reality. Would travel drop if you could experience Bhutan from your sofa rather than actually having to take an arduous flight?

Alex Cosmas: Here’s my honest read on it. We’ve been able to visit Bhutan virtually for over a decade through YouTube and through National Geographic . And yet, travel is at an all-time high. And it’s because we all, as social animals, continue to enjoy experiencing new things, meeting new people, hearing new stories, and being inspired by a new site’s history and cuisine.

The numbers also suggest that we are in an unprecedented growth phase for travel. We are also in a phase where, over the past 15 years, customer satisfaction has steadily grown, despite how much we all like to beat up on our travel suppliers.

Consumers are admitting that the area they want to splurge on in the next year is travel and hospitality, such as experiences and restaurants. So they’re giving us that gift of their wallets and their trust. We have to deliver on that expectation as a sector. Gen AI, traditional AI, augmented reality, virtual reality, and digital technologies are going to help us deliver on the promise.

W hen Celia Quillian began planning her first trip since the pandemic in mid-March, she had a few criteria as she searched for the right destination— temperate weather in spring, not crowded with tourists, and within the U.S.

With all that in mind, Quillian, who lives in Atlanta, G.A., decided to try something new and plugged her wish list into ChatGPT. “I asked it to give me ten recommendations, just to see what it could do,” Quillian said.

The AI chatbot recommended several locations that fit the bill– including Puerto Rico, Charleston, S.C. and Palm Springs, Calif. Quillian, 31 , had been to a few of the destinations before and knew they fit the description of what she had asked for. “I was like okay, this thing is definitely working.”

She chose Puerto Rico and then used the chatbot to create a seven-day itinerary for her trip for the following month, prompting it to create a table describing potential activities and breaking them down by distance and cost. “It took me an evening to plan the trip versus weeks of research,” says Quillian, who shared her planning experience in a video that she says received over 2 million views on Instagram. Quillian is a product marketing manager who created the social media account, @smartworkAI, aimed at teaching people creative ways to use AI programs.

ChatGPT allows people to tailor their vacations based on who they’re traveling with or what activities they’re interested in—sourcing everything from activities for kids, to a list of top-rated coffee shops, says Frederic Gonzalo, a marketing consultant who specializes in the use of new technologies in travel. “Before ChatGPT and other [generative AI] tools, you’d have 50 people do the same 50 searches for a weekend in New York, and everyone would get the same results,” says Gonzalo. “Now it’s really going into this hyper-personalization and getting content adapted to everyone’s reality.”

In recent months, artificial intelligence, and how it stands to change daily life, has been at the center of public conversation. The travel industry is no exception—a third of travelers say they would use ChatGPT to plan their vacation, according to a tracking study by Longwoods International . Major companies are also beginning to use AI technology to provide destination suggestions to customers and streamline the booking process.

Travel Companies Utilizing AI

Major travel companies are getting in on the action. In April, Expedia launched a travel planner in their app powered by ChatGPT that recommends places to go and stay based on the conversations people have in the chat, and saves hotels mentioned during the chat for easy booking. Expedia also launched its own plugin for ChatGPT so travelers can start a conversation on the ChatGPT site and then select the Expedia plugin, which directs travelers to the company’s website to book the discussed trip.

Other companies are interested in following suit. Priceline , AirBnB , and Bookings.com have all signaled their interest in using AI to improve customer service or help plan trips as well.

And while AI is already in use in the travel industry, as machine learning is often used to predict customer behavior or provide more personalized recommendations, Gonzolo says that conversational AI tools might soon make customer service operations more sophisticated. “Chatbots on websites are really dry, and if you don’t answer the three or four preempted questions that are there, you’re sort of on your own,” he says. “So I think we’ll see much more sophisticated customer service tools that will be integrated on websites.”

Could AI Replace Travel Agents?

For now, Gonzalo says the AI’s tool’s main strength lies in helping travelers plan their trip or find activities at their destination, but it is not yet sophisticated enough to help with things like booking a flight, which is where a travel agent may still come in for some. And for others, the value of human connection or the fun in the process of planning traveling is important, says Erika Richter, VP of Communications & Marketing at the American Society of Travel Advisors.

“If you want a top 10 list of things to do or places to stay, it can spit out those answers for you. But can it tell you which of those experiences are actually authentic?” Richter says.

Though some have been quick to turn to ChatGPT for travel recommendations, Richter notes that travel agents are still in high demand. “Almost 30% of our travel advisors are saying that over half of their clients are working with a travel advisor for the first time,” she says. “Travel is becoming more complicated. People are wanting that personal touch.”

Richter thinks that AI will help automate simple bookings, like a trip home or business travel. “To that end, I think that it might make it faster and easier for those one-off bookings,” Richter says.

For travelers simply looking to get recommendations, Gonzalo also cautions against over-reliance on AI, which might be programmed using old information. (ChatGPT, for example, still has limited knowledge of data after 2021.) Users run the risk of being directed to a restaurant that’s out of business or an attraction that’s closed.

Quillian says that the tool remains useful because a city’s offerings don’t change much. “Sometimes [a city] will have something going on in the moment, but most of the time, the destinations and the attractions stay the same.”

Quillian adds that specificity was key to getting the tool to provide unique ideas. “If you’re looking for ‘tourist destinations in Puerto Rico’, it’s probably going to give you a similar assortment of things that you would get searching on Google,” she says. “But if you say ‘I’m trying to find some off the beaten path or hidden gems within the city that most people most tourists don’t visit’, it’ll probably be able to give you that too.”

Quillian found herself relying on the program throughout the trip, whether it was to help identify wildlife or better understand the local dishes on a restaurant’s menu.

“I speak to it like a friend or like an assistant,” she says. “It’s my own pocket travel guide.”

Inside Generative AI’s Promise for Travel Booking

Bumpy roads are inevitable, as is discerning the hype from genuine application, but travel companies should be considering their role in a world powered by generative AI and how to get there. If they haven't started, they are already behind.

Microsoft took over tech headlines last week when it said that its search engine, Bing, is being relaunched in partnership with generative artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

This comes shortly after Microsoft announced a multibillion dollar investment into OpenAI , the startup behind ChatGPT . 

If Bing is getting this new AI capability, and Google has similar plans, it begs the question of how online travel agencies and other brands are implementing generative AI in an effort to keep up. 

Some online travel agencies are making serious moves, if they haven’t implemented something already, as they envision a future powered by generative AI.

Beyond much hype and headlines in recent weeks, the immediate opportunity with generative AI in travel planning seems to be helping in the pre-planning phase, before travelers really know what they want or do not want. But experts envision that booking technology powered by generative AI could move away from the typical process of filling out forms in multiple web pages, toward a fully integrated process that begins conversationally without so many cumbersome steps. 

“That’s much more compelling than going to TripAdvisor, and it will be for sure,” said Marc Mekki , who worked for over a decade as a tour operator and now coaches organizations on how to make sense of tech innovation. Mekki is scheduled to speak about generative AI at the travel industry conference Arival next month in Berlin. 

Companies Making Moves

The companies that will be able to capitalize on the opportunities are those that can adapt quickly and embrace change, said Patrick Surry, chief data scientist of Hopper, in a statement to Skift. Hopper , a travel agency app that’s pioneering fintech options like price freezes, did not grant an interview request on the topic, but Surry said in the emailed statement that generative AI could permeate much of what the company does. 

“We think it has the potential to impact how we interact with our own customers,” Surry said. “There’s some interesting use cases that we hope to explore such as improving automation and responses for common customer service requests through chat (and eventually even speech and video), as well as concierge-like services to recommend travel destinations, create personalized itineraries and the like. 

“It will also have a big impact on how we work, particularly in product development as we learn to use these new tools to improve the speed and quality of delivering our products and increasing our own efficiency and productivity. We will be able to experiment with how this can assist software development, as well as other use cases like making job descriptions more attractive to specific audiences.

“And I suspect this is just the beginning — we’ll need to go back to first principles and rethink a lot of how and why we do things the way we do.”

Omio , an online travel agency for ground transport and flights, is starting to work on implementing generative AI, according to CEO Naren Shaam, though he said it is too early to share details. Berlin-based Omio operates in 37 countries.

“If I were to make a prediction, it will completely change the way we create products as a travel company,” Shaam said. “I do see this as a mega shift that will come to the industry, and we’re definitely looking into that seriously.”

Expedia Group did not grant an interview request on the topic and did not share specific moves it is making, but chief technology officer Rathi Murthy sent a statement about where she sees the biggest opportunities for generative AI, namely personalized trip planning and chatbots.

“AI needs large data sets to feed off, and we have over 70 petabytes of travel data on booking patterns and traveler behavior powering our platform,” Murthy said. “With this in place, it’s easy for me to imagine integrating generative AI into our platform to further personalize how travelers search for a trip, going beyond creating trip itineraries that have been heavily highlighted as a great example of what this next generation of AI can do.”  

Corporate travel agency Navan (formerly TripActions) last week said that it has integrated ChatGPT into a chatbot called Ava as a conversational way to help travel managers book trips, with a goal of expanding upon its capabilities. Navan said it is also using the technology to write, test, and fix code. 

Ilan Twig, Navan chief technology officer, posted a demo of the new chatbot on Twitter with the comment, “Ava (automated virtual assistant) is going to change the way we book and manage corp travel.”

The beta version of the chatbot is available to 20 percent of Navan’s customers, with a full rollout expected in the coming months. 

Limitations in Travel

As companies build generative AI features into their websites, they say the tech will be able to better utilize vast amounts of data they have already collected over years in business. That’s the stance that Omio is taking, and that’s also the basis for the Tripnotes travel mapping app being built, utilizing resources from the founder’s previous startup. The end goal for Tripnotes is that travelers will be able to complete bookings through the app.

But Mekki questions how many travel companies can add enough value to really compete in that environment because most travel data is not truly proprietary. A drug company, in contrast, that holds trade secrets could potentially derive more value from generative AI by using it to discover the molecules that perform best as pharmaceuticals. 

“The problem is, in my view, that we’re in an industry that unless you do something highly particular, like significantly niche, that it’s not disruptive enough to set you apart from anyone else,” Mekki said “In travel, it’s going to be fairly easy to build or acquire what is tantamount to the same source data. What kind of information is so proprietary that you would hold it in a large enough data silo for it to be unique? It’s not going to be destination information, because everyone has it or can get it.”

Another concern: if future travelers plan and book trips through a sort of chatbot feature, rather than the traditional list that’s populated in a search engine, Mekki believes that smaller companies like tour operators and independent hotels should be worried about how they will be found. 

“I think that’s the number one question for everyone to really stay up at night about,” Mekki said. 

“You’re not going to search engine optimize your way out of that one, so what are you going to do? You become more dependent on OTAs. OTAs are going to be the great winners here because they just don’t lose, and I’m afraid that is bound to continue.”

Murthy of Expedia highlighted that the travel industry generally runs on old technology, which was exemplified during the recent meltdowns with Southwest and the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Before companies invest in generative AI, they need to make sure the technological fundamentals of their platform are sound,” Murthy said.

She added that it can take a lot of time and resources to build AI to the level where it needs to be, and it’s unclear at this point how scalable it is.

After the runaway success of ChatGPT , which reached 100 million monthly active users in January just two months after its launch (making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history), numerous companies are now getting in on the AI frenzy. Microsoft and Google quickly followed suit, launching their own versions of AI chatbots, Bing and Bard , respectively. And this month, online travel behemoth Expedia began testing a new in-app travel planning experience powered by ChatGPT. There’s also GuideGeek , a new ChatGPT-powered travel assistant from the Matador Network that offers travel tips and live flight and vacation rental data and is accessible via WhatsApp (and soon, Instagram). And there’s bound to be more.

The popularity of these generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools stems from the fact that they have the ability to provide human-like responses to a wide range of queries. Among the questions consumers can ask the chatbots are travel-related ones, such as, “What are some of the best places to travel to without a passport?”, “What is a three-day itinerary in London that’s good for kids?”, or “How can I get from Tokyo Narita Airport to Shinjuku?”

Given the possibilities to assist with travel planning efforts, travel companies see massive potential to augment and enhance consumer interactions and travel experiences through AI.

While it’s still relatively nascent, generative AI has “huge implications for travel planning,” says Seth Borko, senior research analyst at Skift and author of an April 2023 report titled “ Generative AI’s Impact on Travel .” From searching and planning to the experience itself, Borko says artificial intelligence represents a multi-billion-dollar opportunity for travel companies.

In its current form, ChatGPT isn’t exactly the end-all-be-all travel planner, but it is a tool that can provide assistance in the research phase. Let’s look at what it actually can (and can’t) help with—and how AI is poised to alter the travel landscape as we know it.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (owned by the San Francisco-based company OpenAI ) launched in November 2022 and is a large language model (LLM), a subset of the generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) group of language models, that is designed to process and generate human language. While AI has been around for decades, there’s something unique about these LLMs, especially with the more refined ChatGPT.

Unlike other forms of AI that were implemented in the past, ChatGPT has a more consumer-friendly and easy to operate user interface with the ability to “reply conversationally and interact as you would with another person,” says Hannah Mieczkowski, an AI expert who holds a Ph.D. degree in human and AI interaction from Stanford University. LLMs like ChatGPT operate on naturalistic text interactions, so there isn’t a need for a computer science degree or knowledge of programming languages.

The end result is an easy-to-use online tool that anyone can use for free. (While a $20 per month paid version of ChatGPT exists for faster results, it isn’t required.) “The uptake of ChatGPT, especially from folks that aren’t AI researchers or experts is fascinating. There are so many applications across industries, including travel,” Mieczkowski tells AFAR.

How can you use ChatGPT and AI for travel?

Currently, one of the biggest implications ChatGPT has for travel is with regard to trip planning. Any user can create a ChatGPT account (at chat.openai.com ) and begin conversing with the platform about places to go, where to stay, how to get around, and what to see and do. In other words, you can use ChatGPT as a form of travel inspiration and for trip planning insights.

The more specific you are with the prompts, the better the results become. For instance, when I recently asked ChatGPT where to go for a peaceful, phone-free retreat, it offered relatively generic suggestions, including Bali, Indonesia ; Tulum, Mexico; and Ubud (also in Bali). However, when I followed up by asking for a destination that had significantly fewer visitors per year, it suggested Dharamsala, India, a spiritual town located in the foothills of the Himalayas and home to the Dalai Lama.

When I requested ChatGPT to tell me about some of the best new luxury hotels in Hong Kong , a destination that I’m intimately familiar with, it provided an accurate, true-to-life response. The list included Rosewood Hong Kong , the St. Regis Hong Kong , and the Hari Hong Kong , all top-tier, new properties. (However, “new” is relative since ChatGPT hasn’t ingested any data after 2021.) In terms of restaurants, I asked ChatGPT for some of the best Chinese eateries in New York City. Here, it offered six establishments from a popular fast-casual spot, Xi’ian Famous Foods, to the more obscure, Flushing, Queens–located Da Xi Sichuan.

Travel companies, naturally, are bullish on AI, as it supplements (and in some cases, replaces) human interaction.

“Travelers can start to plan a trip through a conversation with ChatGPT . . . to get ideas and inspiration on where to go,” Rathi Murthy, CTO and president of Expedia product and technology, tells AFAR.

Expedia is looking to bridge a gap between ideation and booking. “A consumer can have a conversation with ChatGPT to dream up their next trip, and then when they’re ready to start shopping for flights, hotels, etcetera, they’re already in the Expedia app,” says Murthy.

Jason Birnbaum, CIO and SVP at United Airlines, tells AFAR that the airline is “testing many applications of generative AI, from software development to customer service and travel inspiration.”

What are the limitations of ChatGPT and AI for planning and booking travel?

OpenAI says that ChatGPT-4, the latest version of the chatbot, can iterate creatively with users to solve complex problems. However, there are distinct limitations, like the fact that the data that it is working from only goes through 2021.

There are also many ways ChatGPT can steer users in the wrong direction. “These LLMs have a tendency to do what researchers call ‘hallucinate,’ meaning that they can create information that’s presented as factual even though it’s incorrect,” Mieczkowsk says. “Because of this, ChatGPT is unlikely to ever be the only source of truth when it comes to travel planning.”

A disclaimer plastered on ChatGPT’s homepage reads, “While we have safeguards in place, the system may occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information and produce offensive or biased content. It is not intended to give advice.”

Skift’s Borko advises that ChatGPT should be viewed as just one of several trip planning tools. “Searches should really be used in combination with other tools like social media, recommendations from parents and family, and travel agents,” he says.

How will ChatGPT and AI continue to change and transform travel?

The continued evolution of ChatGPT and AI stands to radically change the travel landscape. For instance, while it isn’t possible to book travel directly through ChatGPT currently, Borko says that kind of functionality is coming. “In the future, there’s a world where you go to ChatGPT and say, ‘Hey, what are the best flights for whatever need that I have? And can you help me book a flight for under $500?’ This type of smart search is going to take a while, but as far as the travel industry is concerned, it has the largest impact.”

Besides more advanced travel planning and booking capabilities, there are some fundamental questions about the technology and the effects it might have on travel patterns that remain unanswered.

ChatGPT’s inputs aren’t clearly defined, which means the information it offers has the potential to be manipulated. If the proper guardrails aren’t put in place, answers can be heavily influenced by actors who feel like they can game the system, similar to the earlier days of search engine marketing. “Because of this, AI, in general, is best used as a sort of augmentation of humans,” says Mieczkowski, adding, “I don’t believe there’s ever going to be a time in which these AI models are fully self-sufficient.”

As a nonhuman entity, ChatGPT doesn’t necessarily take sustainability or larger ethical travel issues into consideration. So, for example, says Borko, “It could make overtourism worse by concentrating tourists rather than dispersing them.”

Experts weigh in on the best ways to use tools like ChatGPT for travel—and how to avoid being duped by AI “hallucinations.”

With the introduction of accessible new AI systems like ChatGPT, travel will never be the same.

AI has simplified planning, made it easier to discover new experiences, and streamlined the booking process. Instead of slogging through hours of research, users get similar results with a quick conversation with AI.  

AI is great for some travel functions, like generating ideas, spotlighting small businesses, and translating languages—but there are tricks to using it well, especially when it comes to traveling.

Here’s what you need to know about how to best use AI for travel.  

What are the best uses for AI for travel?  

The best uses of AI for travel currently fall largely into the planning and purchasing phase. “All the excitement around booking a trip can quickly become overwhelming when travelers are faced with lots of options that each require research,” says Rathi Murthy, the CTO of Expedia Group. “This is what AI can solve in travel. ”  

Many AI platforms use ChatGPT, which you can use for free, in-browser, or through an iOS app (an app for Android is also coming soon). Up to its knowledge cut-off date of September 2021, ChatGPT generates suggestions based on details in your request. For $20 a month, users can upgrade to GPT-4, which offers additional web plug-ins and searches for current information, like live pricing and weather.

One of the best uses of AI for travel is to coordinate multiple flights and suggest destinations based on certain parameters, including timing and pricing. For example, GPT-4 can find multiple flights for under $1,500 for five people traveling from five different cities in the U.S. and traveling to Amsterdam in August. GPT can save a lot of research by coordinating budgets and itineraries and searching for the best deals on multiple platforms.

You’ll still need to go to booking sites to both book and verify the pricing, which is one reason experts recommend that travelers use AI as a rough outline or starting point—and not rely on it alone.

You can narrow your search once you choose where you want to travel. AI is skilled at responding to specific interests, whether you’re looking for the best speakeasies in an area or designing a five-day itinerary of off-the-beaten-path museums, events, or tours. It can even suggest dining reservations or find out the price of ticketed events.

AI is also useful in finding responses to prompts like “less crowded” or “underrated.” This is because, unlike Yelp, TripAdvisor, or Google, the system pools knowledge from all corners of the web and interprets results to fit your query best—then delivers the information in a conversational way.

How do you create a useful travel prompt for AI?

To create a good prompt, it's crucial to ask questions in your native language, according to Ross Borden from Matador Network, the company behind the travel AI chat called GuideGeek . AI models can speak and understand many languages, and your grammar matters: The more accurate your punctuation, spelling, and grammar, the better the AI will be able to understand you.  

You will also need to be as specific as possible about what you want. Include information about your party (any kids, elderly travelers, or pets?), dietary restrictions, interests, and priorities. The more information you can give, the better your output will be.  

You can also get better results by giving AI feedback: telling it when it’s wrong or misunderstands your request is important. AI uses large language models (LLMs) to learn, and that back-and-forth exchange can go a long way to getting you accurate and relevant information.

Finally, you’ll need to double-check AI’s answers against other sources.

Where does AI fall short?

AI “can collect general information with 70 to 80% accuracy—that's still only a C grade,” says Erica Jackowitz, a luxury travel advisor with Roman & Erica.

The current iteration of AI is only as good as the data it’s pulling in. As mentioned above, the free ChatGPT platform has a knowledge cutoff is September 2021. That means that it won't be able to tell you if a hotel, restaurant, bar, or museum has closed, gone out of business, changed its name, or shifted focus. You’ll also still need to go directly to booking sites to verify prices and book your travel. The base platform of Chat GPT also can’t search the web at this point or give you live information.

Matthias Keller, chief scientist & senior vice president of technology at Kayak noted that issues also arise if a city has changed names or is known under another name. For example, at Kayak, Bangalore is called Bengaluru, the city’s official name since 2014.  

AI can also “hallucinate” or make up false facts when asked about very small cities or towns in remote locations, according to Borden.  

“If you say, what's a great coffee shop in Shoshone, Idaho, you probably want to check the output because it tends to have, in my experience, more hallucinations in small towns when the AI doesn't have an answer,” he says. “It will just make one up, which is obviously not good for anyone.”

What are the best AI sources for travel?

Most of the travel platforms currently available are built off of OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform. Tripnotes.ai , roamaround.ai , and curiosio.com , for example, have a user-friendly web interface laid over ChatGPT that makes browsing for travel plans more interactive through the use of maps, pre-planned road trip routes, and other features. You can also use ChatGPT Plus to get access to plug-ins like Kayak, Expedia, Trip, OpenTable, and others to plan your travel.

Others, like GuideGeek , use messaging platforms like WhatsApp on your smartphone to offer specific suggestions for places to go and things to do based on your input. GuideGeek is a great platform to use once you are at your destination and want more information about things to do and see—but it still has some limitations. You need to be connected to a network to use it, and there may be times ChatGPT is overwhelmed with traffic, delaying your answer.

Every day, AI is rapidly evolving as more start-ups and companies figure out the best ways to leverage this powerful generative engine to deliver information using natural language. As the system gets more access to the web, learns what users want, and becomes more “intelligent,” it will continue to shift travel in new, unexpected, and unique ways.

Because the technology is still so new and changing so fast, it’s difficult to say how it will affect travel long term, but according to Borden, “AI is the technology that's going to bring travel into this amazing renaissance with regard to how we plan, research and ultimately book travel. And then it will revolutionize what we do even as we travel.”

AI Travel Apps You Can Use Right Now (That Are not ChatGPT) [2023]

What are the best AI Travel Apps? Artificial Intelligence is transforming every industry, with travel and tourism making no difference. Recently, I wrote about how to plan a trip with ChatGPT and save money , and also how to use Google Bard to book flights . Those articles became so popular that I received many questions regarding AI-powered travel apps, so I created this post.

You can see the search trends for “AI Travel” and “AI Travel apps”, and the large volumes show how people are increasingly more interested in leveraging the latest technology in their everyday use cases, such as planning a trip itinerary, searching for flights, accommodation, transportation, and experiences.

What are the best AI travel apps in 2023?

I’ve been in love with Kayak since 2013 and it’s an app I love for planning, tracking my flights, and even finding the right place to book my tickets . Kayak is a travel tool and search engine that has been around for several years (competing with Google Flights and others).

The focus of Kayak is to quickly research and show you the best travel options and alternatives to the destinations you would like to go to. Kayak will help you find the best prices and travel times for flights, hotels, apartments, cruises, trains, rental cars, and even vacation packages.

How is Kayak using AI?

Kayak is using AI in different ways. With NLP, the company can process hundreds of thousands of user-generated hotel and flight reviews, condense them into a few snippets that capture their general essence, and sort each item into the buckets users are searching for. NLP also powers Kayak’s march into AI integration with chatbots and assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Slack, Facebook Messenger, and more.

Kayak also uses algorithms to tag photos of hotels, determining whether they’re showing a beach, bedroom, bathroom, or gym, for example. But the tagging process isn’t perfect. Even if your AI achieves 95% accuracy, Keller said, 50 out of 1,000 predictions will still be wrong.

How I use Kayak

In there you can have all the info you need at hand, and the app updates you on flight status, gate changes, and other information in real time. It’s so handy! 2. Skyscanner

Skyscanner is an aggregator search engine and travel agency based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The site is available in over 30 languages and is used by 100 million people per month. Skyscanner lets people research and book travel options for their trips, including flights, hotels and car hire.

How is Skyscanner using aI?

Skyscanner uses AI for its chatbot . When the Skyscanner chatbot is activated on Facebook or Whatsapp, users can enter their destination to start the conversation with the bot. If you are unsure where to go, just type ‘anywhere,’ and then the bot will provide you with suggestions, including the price for each destination using real-time search trends.

When you tell the chatbot the travel date, it will show you the cheapest flights to your destination. Then the bot will redirect you to the official Skyscanner website to complete the booking upon selecting to book a flight. Moreover, the Skyscanner chatbot allows you to receive price alerts for a flight. Skyscanner reported that it had surpassed one million traveler interactions with the application.

Expedia is a popular website for booking travel accommodations. Expedia aims to provide the lowest prices for any booking, which is backed up with the “Best Price Guarantee.” Users can search for hotels, cars, flights, or packages based on their travel requirements and sort through accommodations that meet their needs.

How is Expedia using AI?

Expedia is not only using AI and ML to bring better experiences to its customers but has also managed to harness the power of AI to reduce business costs.  A large part of Expedia’s platform is being able to provide customer service to its customers who might be experiencing troubles with their travels and need immediate assistance.

This was especially true when the pandemic first hit, and people had to cancel trips, flights and figure out if they were even able to travel. To improve its conversational capabilities, Expedia Group powers more than 29 million virtual conversations. This implementation has saved the company more than 40% in variable agent costs. 

4. Eddy Travels AI Travel Assistant

Eddy Travels AI Assistant is powered by Kiwi.com . It is a fully automatic travel chatbot that uses artificial intelligence, and it is available 24/7 to help users find the best travel deals. You can chat with the AI Assistant to search for flights, accommodation, and other travel products with prices and inventory in realtime. The Eddy Travels AI Assistant works via their website, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, and WhatsApp.

Booking.com is available in 43 languages and offers more than 28 million reported accommodation listings, including over 6.6 million homes, apartments, and other unique places to stay. Wherever travelers want to go, Booking.com makes it easy and provides them with 24/7 customer support.

WayAway is a flight aggregator that provides travelers with the best rates on airline tickets. Its innovative search finds the best option for specific travel dates by comparing airfares offered by all major US and global airlines and agencies. The aggregator displays final prices without any hidden fees.

Google Bard is a large language model chatbot developed by Google AI and an aggressive response to ChatGPT. Bard can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer pretty much any of your questions quickly. And so far, it’s free.

Tryp.com is a Danish online travel agency that facilitates the booking of transportation services (including rail, buses, flights, and ferries), ancillary services, and accommodation. It is a registered IATA travel agency and was crafted to be your own personal travel assistant.

With help of AI, Tryp.com can propose unique itineraries and grab deals that wouldn’t be seen anywhere else. The cool part about Tryp.com is that it targets uncommon airports and destinations . Most other tools find great flights to 99% of the biggest airports. But what if you would like to travel somewhere else ?

Coming from a small town at the end of the world ( Ushuaia , Argentina), I can relate to those trying to score good deals to unknown locations. With its proprietary AI-powered algorithm, Tryp.com is able to propose crazy itinieraries that are incredibly cheap, but also fun experiences. You can choose how conservative you want your trip/stopovers to be, date range you’d like to travel, plus trip length. You can also add hotels and accommodation from the same dashboard, and explore local points and attractions.

ChatGPT is a beast. OpenAI’s technology is changing and revolutionizing many fronts, and this is just the beginning. ChatGPT 4 was released recently, and it is able to produce more elaborate results. If you are curious about how to use ChatGPT as a travel planner, check out this detailed guide .

ChatGPT Plus also supports plugins, and some travel companies such as Kayak, Expedia, and Trip.com have plugins available. However, these plugins still suck for complex queries (read more here) .

iplan.ai is a travel planner with help of artificial intelligence. Its goal is to create a personalized an itinerary in few seconds. Your plan is made by AI based on who you are, how you are traveling, and what matters the most for you, that’s why it is unique to each individual.

How is Hopper usi ng AI?

Hopper analyzes historical patterns of price changes and uses them to predict if prices are likely to go up or down in the future and help customers time their purchases. Travel apps like Hopper have only occasional interactions with users, it makes it more difficult to build individual profiles. However, because Hopper has such a large user base, it can identify similar types of customers and model recommendations on the characteristics of those cohorts.

Hopper notifies you of super-low rates on hotels, flights, and car rentals. It also predicts the prices of flights and references you if you are below, on par, or above average prices. Many of the deals save you up to 40% on travel costs! The app is super simple to use, and when I started using it, it was only for flights. Now they have grown into a whole technology stack that they call Hopper Cloud.

We are just scratching the surface of the power of AI, and I’m already looking forward to which AI travel apps we’ll see in the upcoming years and what features they bring.

Right now, we see a range of concrete use cases, from chatbots to better recommendations, finding deals, experience personalization, travel planners, and fare alerts.

For instance, several travel sites, including Expedia and KAYAK, have launched ChatGPT plug-ins recently. Users can get recommendations on places to go, where to stay, how to get around, and what to see and do based on the chat.

“You’ll find AI embedded in most of the best-known travel booking engines today, so you might be using AI to help plan your trip without even realizing it,” said Brian Prince, founder and CEO of TopAITools.com .

For instance, Expedia uses a ChatGPT plug-in on the homepage of the app to provide travel recommendations. It will save hotels and attractions mentioned in the conversation to a trip, which you can then book in the app. Using one platform for research and booking helps streamline travel planning and save time.

And two-thirds — 64% of travelers — said they expect to use AI to research or plan travel in the future, or have already done so, according to a Matador Network survey. In addition, 16% said they had already used AI to help plan their travel — and a majority of those respondents said they used AI tools to save time planning (60%) and to find activities or attractions they wouldn’t have known about (70%).

“Budgeting is a huge part of travel. Very few people can move around the globe as if money was no object,” said Ross Borden, CEO of travel publisher Matador Network .

Matador Network also recently launched GuideGeek , a free OpenAI-powered travel assistant with budgeting in mind, said Borden.

Staying Within Your Travel Budget

According to Borden, GuideGeek can be completely customizable to the request of the user. For example, you can make an itinerary of any length and matching any budget for any location in the world.

“How often have you been looking at a hotel online that’s in your budget, but there’s an ad for another hotel that looks way better but costs twice as much?” asked Borden.

ChatGPT itself can offer basic money-saving tips for travel, even with a pretty simple prompt like, “What are some of the best tips to save money on travel?” said Prince.

Yet, Prince noted that when it comes to ChatGPT prompts, the more specific and detailed you can be, the better the output.

For instance, when Prince used the prompt, “I’m planning a trip to Paris in April. Can you tell me some tips to save money on food and tourist attractions?” ChatGPT offered specific and tangible advice, including a list of free attractions.

“I didn’t know you could get into the Louvre free after 6pm on the first Friday of every month (except in July and August)! Always make sure to fact-check the information from ChatGPT, as it may not be up-to-date or accurate,” he added.

Prince said he asked ChatGPT for ways to save money on checked baggage fees with Delta, “and it gave me some solid advice.”

Finding Flight Deals

AI travel tools can also help finding not only the cheapest flights, but flights with other options.

“We see a lot of users booking flights on GuideGeek because rather than a somewhat overwhelming array of flight options no sane person would take, if you put in your dates and destinations, GuideGeek immediately searches all available flights and provides three options: best, fastest and cheapest,” said Borden.

Prince added that Google Flights now uses AI to predict when you can get the best prices on tickets.

“Google Gemini integrates with Google Flights to access data, so you can plan your trip in Gemini and then book it easily, knowing you’re getting the best prices,” he said.

Brainstorming for Budget Travel

Using AI to get ideas and inspiration for your next trip is a great way to break out of your typical habits in booking destinations of which you’re already aware, said Borden.

“AI presents a more proactive option for travelers to find new destinations that fit within their budget, as opposed to scrolling on Instagram and hoping that the cool beach you just saw has somewhere affordable to stay nearby,” he said.

Asking for Cost-Saving Strategies

For instance, as you plan your trip, you can message back and forth with GuideGeek at no cost on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

“While lists of free activities exist online for a lot of destinations, using AI can help create a custom list generated around what you’re looking for. It would take quite a bit of time to research the same highly specific set of info on Google,” said Borden.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

From looking for inspiration on romantic beach destination options in the Caribbean to zeroing in on a specific list of vacation homes for a family of four, with air conditioning and a pool, the AI Trip Planner makes recommendations in a quick, conversational way.

Integrated travel planning experience

The AI Trip Planner takes the trip planning process one step further by providing travelers with a visual list of destinations and properties, including Booking.com’s pricing information, with deep-links to view more details.
