THE ROAD CLOSURES ARE A SHAMBLES WHY IS THAT WHEN THEY SHUT PART OF THE MOTORWAY ON THE M56 YOU THEN HAVE TO GO MILES OUT OF THE WAY TO GET BACK ONTO YOUR ROUTE TO NORTHWICH. DO THESE PEOPLE WHO PLAN THE CLOSURES THINK OF THE INCONVENIENCE OF PARTICULARLY NIGHT SHIFT WORKERS WHO ARE TIRED ALREADY AND HAVE TO NAVIGATE DIVERSIONS WHICH GO AROUND AND ROUN.D. I AM JUST LOOKING TONIGHT THAT THE M56 WILL BE CLOSED AND I YOU HAVE TO COME OFF TOWARDS MANCHESTER AT THE NEXT JUNCTION THEY ARE CLOSING THE ROADS IE PRINCESS PARKWAY TO RESURFACE WHERE AM I SUPPOSE TO GOIT IS UNBELIEVEABLE

HOW MUCH LONGER IS THIS ONGOING DISRUPTION GOING ON FOR ? WHO EVER THE ORGINISER AND ENIGINEER HEADING THIS ABORTION IS THEY SHOULD NEVER BE GIVEN ANOTHER JOB.

Dear Sirs I am an old man and I drive from East Didsbury via the M56 to Hale every Tuesday evening. On Tuesday October 17th although I got there OK, I found my attempt to return on the motorway blocked as the Hale junction was closed for my return journey. I had no idea how to return home and ended up having to drive miles out of my way via Wilmslow in order to get home. Yesterday evening I again got to Hale OK and yet again found the motorway access closed for my return journey. This time I followed the diversion signs and ended up going in the wrong direction on the M56 for several miles before reaching the A56 roundabout where I was able to turn around and come back on the M56 in the right direction. I was then faced with a massive tailback as the motorway was down to one lane for several miles. Eventually I got home but again added several miles to my journey and much stress. Are you able to tell me therefore how long this chaos will continue for and will the junction again be closed for my return journey on October 31st? I have no satnav if that would have helped me. Kind Regards Howard Stubbings

coming back (heading west) from Manchester last night (11 Oct 2023) , 9.45 pm and signs said M56 closed from jn 5 to 9…..however could access the junction. I came home via a very circuitous route as didn’t wish to get stuck. Is the whole motorway inaccessible when these signs go up in the evening?? I suspect that I could have used the motorway. No info here?? What is happening???

Can you tell me if I can get to Manchester Airport via M56 coming from the M6 direction at 3am on the 6th June 2023 please?

Government issues statement after chaos at Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport has apologised for the inconvenience caused

  • 09:41, 27 APR 2024

Huge queues at Manchester Airport passport control due to UK Border Force nationwide outage affecting eGates. April 25, 2024

The government has issued a statement after a nationwide outage caused chaos at Manchester Airport this week. Airports across the country were affected by the issue with eGates which resulted in huge queues forming at passport control on Thursday (April 25).

One passenger arriving at Manchester Airport said he waited an hour and 20 minutes to get through passport control at Terminal 3. Tom Amos, who was flying back from Alicante, told the Manchester Evening News that the queue was snaking up three corridors.

He criticised the lack of communication by Manchester Airport, telling the M.E.N. that passengers were not aware of the issue until they had been queuing for half an hour. Manchester Airport apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the outage.

Another passenger reported issues with the passport scanners at departures too. Rita Stuart, who was flying to Turkey, was turned away and told to come back later after trying to get through security less than three hours before her flight was due to take off.

She told the M.E.N. that other passengers were also struggling to scan their passports. She said: "People were quite irate'.

The UK-wide issue was first reported by Edinburgh Airport on Thursday afternoon (April 25), according to the Express . Heathrow Airport, London Gatwick, Birmingham Airport, London Luton and Stansted were among the major airports seeing long queues.

However, Liverpool Airport told the Express that it was not impacted by nationwide outage which affected eGates as it does not have any. There are more than 270 eGates - electronic gates which are automated - at 15 airports and Eurostar terminals in the UK.

eGates use facial recognition technology to check passengers' identities against the photo in their passport. They are supposed to offer a quicker way of crossing the border, but due to a nationwide outage, passengers faced long waits on Thursday (April 25).

Shortly after 7pm, Manchester Airport said that the issue affecting eGates had been resolved. In a statement on X, formerly Twitter , the airport said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this period and thank you for your patience and understanding."

The Home Office has said that security at the border was not affected by outage. In a statement on Friday (April 26), a Home Office spokesperson said: "Yesterday [April 25] a technical issue affected eGates across the country. The issue was quickly identified and has now been resolved. We have comprehensively reviewed the causes and will ensure this issue does not occur again.”

Liverpool John Lennon Airport power outage: What happens if my flight is cancelled?

Flights at Liverpool John Lennon airport are severely disrupted due to a power failure affecting the air-traffic control tower.

Just before 2pm, the airport posted on X: “Unfortunately, a power failure is impacting air-traffic control and aircraft operations are temporarily suspended.

“ Passengers , or those meeting flights , should contact their airline for the latest flight information. Engineers are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”

At least five inbound flights, mainly on easyJet have been diverted. Inbound arrivals from Barcelona and Faro landed at Birmingham, while easyJet’s planes from Jersey and Enfidha in Tunisia are at Manchester .

The easyJet departure to Belfast International was cancelled, along with the return flight.

A single Jet2 arrival from Palma de Mallorca has diverted to Manchester.

Responses on X included the suggestion: “Have you tried turning it on and off again?”

Another suggested: “Hope this has nothing to do with Russia targeting power grids in their latest round of cyber attacks on the UK.”

The airport has now said: “Our engineers have resolved the earlier air traffic control power issue, and aircraft operations have now resumed.”

Many passengers had boarded their flights when the failure occurred, and are still on the ground. A Ryanair flight to Alicante took off nearly three hours late, while the easyJet departure to Malaga is currently showing a four-hour delay.

One passenger on the latter flight, Clare Hamlin, posted : “Flight to Malaga 1.50, not left, still sat waiting for update. Airport is chokka, seen one flight leaving. Not happy.”

Another traveller, Donal Doherty, wrote from a plane waiting to leave for Liverpool : “There is a full Ryanair flight sitting here at Dublin airport since 1.30pm. Hopefully we will get airborne soon.”

Disruption is likely to continue for the rest of the day. The 9pm easyJet flight from Liverpool to Belfast is currently scheduled to take off shortly before 1am.

The airport is advising passengers due to travel today or those meeting arriving travellers to contact their airline.

Man with sword held after public and police attacked

Manchester airport confirm they are replacing feature that travellers say 'has never worked'.

Manchester Airport’s broken travellators in the iconic Skylink have long been a bugbear for passengers. In fact it’s been such a longstanding issue that one user, stancorrected, on the social media site Reddit even asked the question ‘Have the travellators at Manchester Airport ever worked?’.

Only last week @louisevoldermort asked the same question on X, the site formerly known as Twitter . It’s even become a butt of jokes. Another Reddit user, rolotonight, simply stated: “The year is 2024 - the walkway escalators at Manchester Airport are still not working.”

Now Manchester Airport has confirmed that work is “well underway” to replace the Skylink travellators and that they are expected to be installed by “next year” (now doubt welcome news to weary travellers). It means that passengers will once more be able to glide across the Skylink, the indoor footbridges which connect Terminal 1 and 3, the station and Terminal 2.

READ MORE: When Manchester Airport will scrap 100ml liquid rule as changes explained

A Manchester Airport spokesperson told the M.E.N.: “Work to replace the travelators on the Skylink is well underway. In several places along the Skylink visitors will see hoardings surrounding the areas where work is already happening with posters explaining what is going on.

“The project is being delivered in a phased approach to minimise disruption for passengers. The old travellators are being removed and replaced with brand new ones that are being built off-site and then lifted into place. The project will be fully completed next year. In the meantime, we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Why has work taken so long to replace the travellators?

There’s been lots of rumours online as to why the travellers haven’t been running, including that the airport has switched them off to save money - Manchester Airport has confirmed to the M.E.N. that this isn’t the case. The reason why it’s been so tricky to replace them is due to the unique position of the Skylink.

The iconic Skylink was built in the 90s and the original travellators were bespoke made when they were installed. However, the company that built and installed them has since ceased to exist, so when the walkways broke down they couldn’t be replaced, Manchester Airport told the M.E.N.

They are now being replaced with completely new travellators built by a different company. But the nature of the Skylink poses a particular challenge as it’s an elevated structure which cannot be closed off for extended periods of time.

Usually moving walkways are built in situ, yet in this case they’re having to be made off site and then placed in position through the roof of the Skylink - which requires precision timing and more than just a steady hand. In the meantime visitors passing through the Skylink will notice boarding up surrounding the walkways while the works are underway.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Monday 29 April 2024 09:17, UK

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".
