 SENIORS TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQ's

You've reached retirement and finally have the freedom to travel and explore new parts of the world. Before adventuring across the globe to visit the grandkids or new sights, it's important to get the right cover.

q. Are there any age limits?

Persons of any age can buy a policy, however trip limits do apply. Those under 69 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 18 months. Those over 70 can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of six months only.

Q. Can I buy a policy if I have pre-existing medical conditions?

Yes, of course. Having a pre-existing condition shouldn’t stop you from travelling and seeing the world! Some conditions are automatically covered, while others will require some further detail from you before we can proceed. Please visit our pre-existing medical conditions page to get started.

Q. Are there any conditions you do not cover?

Regretfully there are some conditions we do exclude from cover. If you require oxygen for your holiday, are suffering from chronic renal failure, have been diagnosed with aids, are awaiting organ transplant or have a terminal prognosis we will not be able to cover your condition. However, you can still purchase a policy that will cover you for a range of additional benefits such as travel delays or lost luggage. Please refer to the Policy Document for section exclusions.

Q. WHAT ITEMS DO YOU COVER?

No doubt you’ll be taking a few expensive items away with you. Our plans provide different levels of cover for cameras phones and laptops.

Q: Do I need to purchase separate cruise cover?

No, we don’t charge any extra if you’re heading on a cruise. With TINZ, you’re covered from ship to shore.

Q) Am I covered if I am travelling on a cruise liner within New Zealand waters?

Travellers on domestic cruises in New Zealand Waters must purchase an international travel insurance plan to ensure cover is available for emergency assistance and medical and hospital expenses when onboard.

Q: Am I covered if I fall over and break a hip?

Yes, all our policies cover for unlimited medical benefits. If you were to have an unforeseen accident on holiday your medical expenses would be covered.

Q. Am I covered if I want to cancel my holiday?

Think hard before booking your trip as you are not covered for change of mind. Our cancellation benefits will cover you for transport and accommodation expenses if you experience delays or cancellation of your travel plans due to unforeseen reasons. For instance, you would be covered for circumstances out of your control such as sudden illness, accidents, natural disaster and more. For more detail see our Policy Document.

Q. Is my luggage covered?

Yes! Provided you look after luggage and do not leave it unattended we cover you for theft, damage, delay and loss of your luggage and personal items.

Travel insurance for seniors

Whether it’s sailing away on a round-the-world cruise, or visiting family and friends on distant shores, senior travellers enjoy living their life to the fullest.

With our comprehensive travel insurance for seniors, you can live yours too. Finding the right travel insurance when you’re over 65 is a must-do. It’s vital you have cover in place for your holiday from unexpected events and includes cover for medical expenses, luggage, trip cancellation and more. Be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions as this could affect the cover you receive.

What we cover

Travel insurance is an important item for any holiday. But for older travellers, finding the right policy can be a confusing tangle of pre-existing conditions, age limits, cover restrictions and additional premiums.

Thankfully, our range of policies can give you the peace of mind knowing that we’re here to help if the unexpected occurs.

Holidaying overseas

Our International Comprehensive insurance offers cover for:

  • Unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while on your journey
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits - with the option to increase your cover depending on the cost of your journey
  • Damaged or lost baggage
  • Personal items if they are stolen or damaged
  • Rental vehicle excess should you have an accident
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Funeral costs

You can also select to pay an additional premium for cover for international cruises, skiing or snowboarding, travelling by mopeds or motorbikes, as well as for pre-existing medical conditions and higher value items.

Taking more than one overseas trip this year?

Sometimes one overseas trip per year just isn’t enough! Our Annual Multi-trip  policy covers you for an unlimited number of return journeys for a year – which often works out cheaper than taking out individual policies for each trip.

When buying your policy, you will be asked to enter the destinations you’re planning to travel to. If you decide to add another destination to your annual itinerary that isn’t on your policy, get in touch so that we can consider adding it on to your policy. Depending on where you’re travelling, you may need to pay an additional premium.

Under our Annual Multi-trip policy, you can choose cover for trips that last up to 30, 60 or 90 days.

Benefits covered are similar to our single-trip policy, but be sure to check that this policy is right for you before making your decision.

Staying local?

Domestic travel insurance provides cover for when you’re visiting your own backyard, whether it’s a weekend city break or a month-long road trip.

Our Domestic insurance includes cover for:

  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits – with the option to increase your cover depending on the cost of your journey
  • Rental vehicle excess
  • Pet services
  • Childcare expenses

You can also select to pay an additional premium for cover for domestic cruises.

Our travel insurance policies provide access to our worldwide emergency assistance team who are just a phone call away, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Travel insurance for seniors with pre-existing conditions

We consider a  pre-existing medical condition  to be any illness or injury of any person named on your Certificate of Insurance, which that person should be aware of. You can add your pre-existing medical conditions when getting a quote from us.

It is important to check the terms of your policy for information about our definition of pre-existing medical conditions, excesses, sub limits, exclusions, and other terms and conditions.

Do pre-existing medical conditions affect the price of my policy?

In a nutshell, yes. Seeking cover for pre-existing medical conditions will affect the price of your travel insurance policy. Any additional costs are displayed to you before you buy your policy, so you can choose whether or not you wish to pay the additional premium.

To find out more about pre-existing medical conditions, including when you must declare your conditions, you can read our policy documents for each policy here .

Remember, overseas medical emergencies can be astronomically expensive for uninsured travellers, as  some of our highest medical claims  show. So, declare your pre-existing medical conditions so you know if you're covered.

Seniors’ travel insurance for overseas cruises

Cruises are a great way to explore exotic and exciting locations with premium comfort and convenience.

But whether it’s a misplaced bag or a bout of the flu, there’s still the risk of something spoiling your trip.

The good news for seniors is that you can add-on cover for overseas cruises to our International Comprehensive  policy.

If you’re embarking on a cruise holiday, remember to:

  • Select cover for all of the destinations you’ll be visiting on your cruise.
  • Start your policy as soon as you’ve booked your cruise, so your cover is in place for unexpected cancellations and illnesses before you leave.
  • If you plan to enjoy any adventure sports or activities on your trip, read the policy wording  to see if they’re covered.

Seniors’ travel insurance for domestic cruises

If you’re looking to take to the waters but would prefer to stay local, a domestic cruise could be the perfect alternative! Domestic cruises are often shorter in length, and you get to experience the beautiful New Zealand coastline and waterways.

You can select the option to cover your domestic cruise when purchasing your Domestic policy .

Our domestic cruise cover includes cover for:

Cover for seniors over 85

Some insurers don’t offer policies to people over 85. We believe that everyone should be free to experience the joy of travelling, no matter their age, which is why there is effectively no age limit for our International Comprehensive and Domestic travel insurance policies. In fact, our age limit is 118!

So, if you’re over 85 and travelling overseas, you can purchase either our International Comprehensive or Domestic policy as long as you meet our eligibility criteria. You can view the relevant eligibility criteria here: International Comprehensive , Domestic .

Travel insurance tips for seniors

We know that finding the right policy for your holiday can be confusing. But with the right research, you can find great value cover that is suitable for your needs. When researching your travel insurance, remember to:

  • Understand your pre-existing medical conditions and what they cost to cover.
  • Look out for any age limits.
  • Start your insurance as soon as you book your travel and accommodation, so your cover is in place for unexpected cancellations.
  • Research customer reviews to find great quality cover.
  • Check the coverage limits, as medical cover could be reduced for people over 70.
  • Read the policy wording before you buy, to make sure you understand exactly what you are and aren’t covered for.

If you suffer from any illness or injury (symptoms included) after starting your insurance but before you travel, remember to notify us.

Domestic Policy FAQ's

Why buy state domestic cover.

Our Domestic and Domestic Cancellation plans are for New Zealand residents travelling within New Zealand.

More than one third of domestic travellers experience an unexpected circumstance that can leave them out of pocket.

It doesn’t matter if you are travelling to Auckland or Amsterdam, if your child becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip, it’s good to know you’re covered.

Specific terms, conditions and exclusions apply to Covid-19. See our State Travel Policy Wording for full details.

Here are some examples of real-life stories

  • An airline lost a customer’s suitcase and the items were not recoverable Luggage Value: $2,500
  • A customer’s rental vehicle was written off after a third-party collision Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess: $4,000.

Here are some examples of types of claims

Medical claims*

  • Sprained limbs or broken arm, leg, wrist due to outdoor activities
  • Asthma, seizure, stroke, heart attack
  • Swimmer's ear/ear infection.

*Pre-existing medical conditions must be declared, and extra cover purchased under Domestic Plan prior to departure

Your cancellation costs prior to travel

  • Prepaid deposits on motorhome rentals, scenic train, or ferry tickets
  • Prepaid fares for rail trips, adventure holidays and cruises
  • Costs for cancellation due to redundancy, illness, injury, and medical operations.

Cancellation prior to departure will result in the loss of deposits paid and in other instances full cancellation fees often apply.

Delayed travel

  • Travel delays due to weather e.g. snowstorms and fog delaying connecting flights.

Luggage claims

  • Broken cameras, smartphones and electronic items
  • Lost spectacles, hearing aids and damaged dentures.

What Domestic options are available?

We offer 3 Domestic plan options to choose from and these can be purchased quickly and easily on our website.

Domestic plan (Single Trip Policy or Annual Multi-Trip Policy)

Our Domestic plan (Single Trip Policy and Annual Multi-Trip Policy) is our most comprehensive domestic plan.

The Domestic plan Annual Multi-Trip Policy is sometimes a more suitable option for those travellers who are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand.

Domestic Cancellation plan Single Trip Policy

Our Domestic Cancellation plan covers domestic travellers for cancellation cover only and you choose the cancellation cover limit to best meet your needs when you purchase your policy.

What activities are covered?

There are plenty of fun activities to do around New Zealand year-round, and we have a comprehensive list of activities which are covered under our Domestic plans (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan).

Our plans automatically include:

  • Bungy Jumping
  • Horse Riding
  • Jet Boating
  • Paragliding
  • Parasailing
  • Snorkelling
  • White Water Rafting

Other activities may be covered as an add-on to your Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation plan). See our State Travel Policy for full details.

What cover is available for Skiing and Snowboarding?

Because being on the snow and participating in winter sports activities often increases the risk of injuries or incidents, you'll need to ensure you amend your Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation plan) to include snow activities like skiing and snowboarding by purchasing a winter cover (snow sports) upgrade. This can help protect you against unforeseen costs should you have a mishap on the slopes and need medical assistance. Sporting and ski equipment are not covered whilst in use and if you are a New Zealand citizen, ACC may cover some costs due to injury caused by an accident.

You will only be covered if you have purchased the Domestic Plan with the winter cover (snow sports) upgrade and:

  • You are skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling on-piste, or cross-country skiing;
  • You are not participating in a Professional capacity; and
  • You are not racing.

Note: sporting and ski equipment are not covered whilst in use.

What if I travel frequently in NZ, do you have a multi-trip option?

Multi-trip travel insurance may save you time and money. If you are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand, consider our Domestic Plan Annual Multi-Trip Policy.

Can you explain the rental vehicle insurance excess?

This benefit applies to our Domestic Plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan) and covers the rental vehicle excess if your rental vehicle is stolen, or damaged while you are driving. You will still need to take out rental vehicle insurance.

A $4,000 rental vehicle excess cover can save you money if you need to make a claim.

Note: that your rental agreement may still require you to take out rental vehicle insurance.

If you are driving your personal vehicle on your domestic holiday there is bonus cover of $2,500 for your comprehensive vehicle insurance excess.

What does the medical cover provide for?

Our Domestic Plan D *(excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan) can provide you with cover for unexpected medical and dental expenses up to $1,500. This is for treatment provided in New Zealand.

It only applies up to 12 months from when you suffered a disabling injury, sickness, or disease. Travel insurance protects you from unforeseen events. Routine medical or dental treatments, prenatal visits and continuation of treatments are not covered.

What existing medical conditions are covered?

We automatically cover a range of existing medical conditions (EMC) under the Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan). Automatically covered conditions include - asthma, epilepsy, gastric reflux and more! Read the State Travel Policy Wording for a full list of the conditions we automatically cover. If your existing medical conditions are not all automatically covered, you may complete an online medical assessment to determine if cover is available. Other travel insurance benefits unrelated to your EMC still apply, even if cover cannot be provided for your specific condition/s.

*Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from onset. Medical and dental expenses cover is limited to $1,500 for treatment provided in New Zealand. This $1,500 sub-limit does not apply to International or Inbound Plans.

New Zealand travellers don’t pack away their suitcase at 70. You’ve probably heard the term ‘grey nomad’, and if you identify as one, then you’ll agree that you’ve earned the time to relax, without any worries or hassles to concern yourself with.

The GoComprehensive plan

The Worldcare Travel Insurance GoComprehensive plan can provide cover for travellers (providing they meet specific eligibility criteria). Review the Policy Wording and GoComprehensive plan before you make a decision to purchase this plan.

Canstar’s Best Value Travel Insurance NZ

Posted by Bruce Pitchers November 21, 2023

Holidays promise carefree relaxation away from work pressures and domestic chores. However, plenty of unforeseen events can ruin the best-laid vacation plans, from illness and accidents to the loss or theft of possessions.

If the worst does happen, a dream holiday can turn into a financial nightmare, especially if you’re left facing bills for medical treatments overseas or for life-saving repatriation. This is why ensuring you have adequate insurance cover before you jet off or sail away on your overseas adventure is a travel essential.

But trying to find the best insurance cover can be complicated. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, as policy details and costs vary, depending on your age and choice of destination. And comparing different levels of cover and costs can be complicated.

But that’s where Canstar can help. As part of our mission to inform Kiwi consumers about the best financial products in the market, each year we analyse a wide range of travel insurance products and award the best providers our prestigious awards and Star Ratings for Outstanding Value Travel Insurance.

What are Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards & Star Ratings?

Canstar’s Travel Insurance ratings score travel insurance providers and their products, and awards the best our prestigious 5-Star Ratings. Each insurance product is assessed and scored for its price and array of features.

For this year’s Travel Insurance Star Ratings, our expert research panel compared 44 travel insurance products from 18 providers across a range of different age profiles, including seniors. To be eligible for our ratings, each product had to meet certain basic requirements, including cover for:

  • $1 million overseas medical and hospital cover per international traveller
  • Repatriation and evacuation services
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Cancellation fees and loss of deposit

For ease of comparison, the different insurance products are judged across six geographical regions and two cruise types:

  • Africa & Middle East
  • Tras-Tasman
  • Domestic Cruise
  • Pacific Cruise

Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards

On the back of our Star Ratings research, we also award the best travel insurance providers and products our prestigious awards for Outstanding Value.

To be eligible for an Outstanding Value Award, insurance providers have to meet extra policy requirements. These include:

  • 24-hour emergency helpline
  • Period of cover automatically extends if a medical claim requires traveller to remain overseas for treatment
  • $5 million or more family overseas medical and hospital cover
  • $5 million or more family cover for repatriation and evacuation services
  • Included cover claims arising from cruising holidays in domestic and international waters (cruise only)
  • Availability to travellers aged over 70 (senior only)
  • Covers cancellation and medical claims arising from COVID-19 related events (domestic cruise only)

This is the second year in a row that AMP has earned an Outstanding Value | Seniors Travel Insurance Award . Our awards panel notes that AMP has achieved its back-to-back awards due to its consistently strong performance across all overseas regions, which is due to its competitive premiums for older travellers and above-average feature scores.

House of Travel once again earns three Outstanding Value Awards, in our International , South Pacific Cruise and  Trans-Tasman travel insurance profiles. The insurer’s performance continues to be driven by its competitive pricings, as well as its high levels of cover.

This year, Southern Cross wins two Outstanding Value Awards,  in our International   and  Seniors   profiles. Our research panel notes that Southern Cross Travel Insurance performs particularly well in senior profiles due to its competitive premiums for older travellers. However, premium increases across the brand’s cruise insurances did see them miss out on our South Pacific Cruise Award this year.

Tower Car Insurance

A newcomer to Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards, Tower joins our Outstanding Value Awards recipients in the International , South Pacific Cruise and Trans-Tasman profiles this year due to its increased price performance and comprehensive policy offerings.

travel insurance for seniors nz

For the second consecutive year, Worldcare is the only travel insurance provider to earn an Outstanding Value Award across all award profiles.

This is due to Worldcare’s consistently competitive prices and strong range of policy features across all regions and age profiles.

In awarding Worldcare, our research panel noted the insurance brand’s exceptionally strong price performance and levels of cover in both the Trans-Tasman and South Pacific Cruise profiles.

We have found that many online travel insurers don’t provide customers with the personalised level of care that we think is essential when purchasing travel insurance, particularly for senior members of our community.  Just because you are over age 65 doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to access comprehensive travel insurance at a reasonable price!

As independent travel insurance brokers we have access to a broad range of  leisure and business travel policies that can often be tailored to your specific requirements, including cover for many pre-existing medical conditions.  We take the time to work with you on a personal level to make sure we understand what you need in your travel insurance cover.   We have chosen travel insurance policies from companies that do more than just ‘tick the boxes’ when assessing pre-existing medical conditions so you can be sure that a proper medical assessment is made when determining if cover can be approved.

As we use a wide range of different leisure travel insurances, we have compiled a list of key benefits across the spectrum:

  • Unlimited medical and evacuation cover
  • Options around excess levels
  • Options to cover pre-existing medical conditions for unexpected complications (assessment criteria will apply; and terminal conditions are not covered under any circumstances)
  • Options to cover missed flights, travel delay , luggage, personal liability, loss of deposits/trip cancellation; emergency return home and so on.

For personal service please call us at any time on NZ Freephone 0800 8550772 . If you'd like a quick free quote then complete our simple online insurance quote form and we'll be happy to help.

Seniors Travel Insurance Cover FAQs

The 'golden years' aren't meant for just sitting at home – they’re the perfect time for you to travel the world.

Our seniors travel insurance cover will keep you protected no matter where your holiday takes you. For more information about travel insurance for pensioners, visit the seniors travel insurance cover page.

Do I need to provide a medical certificate or information from my doctor if I make a claim?

Yes, the medical certificate on the claim form will need to be completed by the usual General Practitioner (GP) of the person whose health caused the claim. A specialist report may also be required. We may require additional medical information including a full history for a claim, but we will let you know when that arises.

Do you have a Seniors Card (SuperGold) discount?

No, sorry. You can adjust the price of your premium by altering the excess or the cancellation amount you wish to be covered for.

Can I pay by cheque?

No, sorry. You can pay by Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.

Is there an age restriction for seniors travel insurance cover?

Yes. You can only purchase a travel insurance policy online if you’re 84 years of age or younger. If you are older than that, call us on 0800 500 225. Policy availability is subject to age, departure date, duration of trip, and area of travel. Plans may not be available to all travellers and limits may apply to travellers over 70-years old.

Do I need to buy a specific policy if I’m a senior traveller?

No, we don’t have specific travel insurance policies for senior travellers. However, we offer a range of policy options to help you find a plan that best suits you, at any age.

Why is seniors travel insurance cover more expensive?

The older you get, the higher the risk of having health issues - and this influences your travel insurance premium. Seniors are more likely to cancel a trip because of unexpected illness, or require medical assistance when travelling, which is why premiums are often higher for senior travellers.

Am I covered for anything that could go wrong on my trip if I get comprehensive cover?

We cover a wide range of mishaps and will be there to support you if something goes wrong. However, travel insurance can't cover everything that may go wrong on your trip – otherwise policies would be extremely expensive. It is important that you read the Policy Wording so you are aware of what our policies cover. If you’re unsure, call our friendly team on 0800 500 225 and they can help explain.

Can I get cover if I have an existing medical condition?

In many instances, yes. We provide automatic* cover for the below existing medical conditions (subject to requirements), with our policies:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Bell’s Palsy
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Cataracts/Glaucoma

If all of your existing medical conditions aren't automatically covered, you will need to complete a medical assessment form online during the quote process. Please note that you must declare all your existing medical conditions, regardless of whether they are automatically covered or not.

You can also call us on 0800 500 225 and we’ll be happy to talk you through it. Your condition will be assessed and we will determine if we can provide coverage. If we approve your condition(s), you may be required to pay an additional premium.

What is the assessment process for an existing medical condition?

Complete the online assessment form when you get a quote or call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 225. You need to tell us about all your conditions and we will complete the assessment to determine if we can provide coverage.

What if I can’t get cover for an existing medical condition?

If cover for your existing medical condition was denied in the assessment, you will not have any cover for incidents relating to your existing medical condition(s), but may still have cover under the policy for things like lost luggage or travel documents. Call us on 0800 500 225 to see what sort of policy we can put together for you.

What do I do if I need unexpected and immediate medical treatment overseas?

If it’s an emergency, call the local emergency line straight away. Then, when you can, call our 24-hour Emergency Assistance team so we can help. We will require a medical report from the treating doctor, details of your medical history and information from your General Practitioner (GP), as well as details of the cost of your overseas treatment. We can deal with the hospital directly while you focus on getting better. Keep in mind that claims are subject to approval.

The best travel insurance for seniors won't have too steep of a price hike compared to rates for younger travelers. It will have high coverage limits for emergency medical coverage, trip cancellations, and and emergency medical evacuation. It's also important that your travel insurance offers pre-existing condition waivers , ideally at no extra cost to the traveler.

Here are our picks for the best travel insurance coverage for seniors in 2024.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.

Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Features, Pros And Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it is safe to argue that it’s a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind.

However, some travellers may feel that Tick Travel Insurance’s Top Policy falls a little short on nice-to-have coverage, including lost luggage and rental car excess limits. Let’s take a closer look at Tick’s top policy offering.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europ Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As is typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors for this price, and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

To speak to someone on Tick Travel Insurance’s customer service team, you can fill in the online query form or email: [email protected] .

You can also send written correspondence to:

Customer Services Tick Insurance Australia Suite 1.04, Level 1, 19 Harris Street Pyrmont, 2009 Sydney NSW

Additionally, you can send a complaint via post, or email: [email protected] .

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where can i find the tick travel insurance pds.

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

Typically, an insurer will provide a link to a policy’s PDS on its website. The PDS for Tick Travel Insurance’s policies, including its comprehensive cover, are also online .

What is Tick Travel Insurance’s phone number?

Existing customers and those with service queries can fill in Tick Travel Insurance’s online query form should they need assistance, or contact at [email protected].

For 24-hour emergency assistance customers can call: +612 9333 3963.

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.

Travel Insurance  Frequently Asked Questions

Does travel insurance cover coronavirus(covid-19).

It depends! Unfortunately, the answer isn't a straightforward one. There are some situations where cover is available, and others where it is an exclusion. It largely depends on which insurer you bought your policy with ; when you bought it; where you're travelling to; when you're travelling; and, the reason for your claim. One thing that is for certain - you're unlikely to be covered for claims relating to the coronavirus for future travel if you haven't yet purchased a travel insurance policy as this is a known event.

Which is the best travel insurance in New Zealand?

The best travel insurance for you depends entirely on your planned trip and your circumstances. If you're a backpacker on a tight budget, you might want a no-frills medical-only policy. Do I need cover in New Zealand?

Why Buy Travel Insurance?

We’re not silly, we know that plenty of New Zealanders go on holiday and have an amazing time exploring new and exciting places without buying travel insurance. But taking a gamble on your much needed break can be risky. Here’s why!

Exxy Medical Costs

If you buy a policy for just one reason this is it! Falling ill or being injured while travelling overseas can be extremely costly. Hospital costs in the USA can reach up to $10,000 per day, while emergency transport home for treatment can easily exceed $100,000! Ouch!

Disasters Can Strike

The excitement of getting on that plane has you knotted up like a pretzel. Picture your dismay if you had to cancel last minute. Worse still, imagine you’re mid-martini when bad news breaks. Should you need to return home, you’ll be covered for unforeseen events like injury or illness of a close relative.

Your stuff is important

Loss, theft or damage to your prized possessions can be a common, yet gut-wrenching experience. If your personal belongings go AWOL while you’re away the right policy will pay to replace or repair them. Win!

For your peace of mind

Travel insurance will take a load off so you can get some R&R. A comprehensive policy will cover you for an array of sticky situations while you're travelling within New Zealand, or overseas.

Because You Have To

Still not convinced? We hate to be the fun police, but some countries simply won’t let you in without cover! For example, it is mandatory to take out travel insurance when travelling to Thailand or Cuba.
