Rugged Montana may not be for everyone, but for those who enjoy the outdoors it is paradise. There is no place on earth more arresting than Glacier National Park with its mighty peaks and sparkling streams.

With only a little over a million inhabitants spread across vast territory and breathtaking views as far as the eye can see, Montana is an oasis of beauty and peace. The mountains that gave the state its name rise up over glassy lakes and green valleys. With a greater variety of wildlife than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, chances are you will glimpse a bison grazing near Yellowstone National Park or a golden eagle soaring high over the plains.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the view or find adventure in the many popular pursuits like mountain biking and rock climbing. Or, grab some boots and head over to the nearest lake or river for some legendary fly fishing. No matter the activity, the Treasure State is a nature-lover’s dream in every way.

Licensure Requirements

Do you currently hold a nursing license from a compact state? If so, you’re in luck. Montana is a compact state there’s no need to obtain a Montana RN or LPN license to start travel nursing in the state. The facility you’re contracted with will verify your compact license.

However, if you plan to make Montana your primary state of residence, or do not hold a license from a compact state, you will need to apply for a license in Montana.

For advanced practice nurses, Montana does require you to apply for licensure by endorsement.

To obtain a Montana nursing license by endorsement, LPNs and RNs need to meet the following requirements :

  • Provide verification of your nursing license. Photocopies of your license do not count as official verification and should not be included in your application.
  • If the state is part of Nursys Ⓡ verification must be through Nursys Ⓡ .
  • For states that do not participate with the Nursys Ⓡ database or for verifications of non-nursing licensure, you will need to request verification directly from the Board that issued your license.
  • Submit fingerprints for a background check to the Montana Department of Justice per the instructions on the application packet .

Routine applications can take 30 days from the date the Board office receives all required documentation to be processed. In Montana, nurses are not permitted to practice nursing in any manner without an active Montana license or a multi-state privilege to practice from another compact state.

Licensure Fees

Application fees for licensure by endorsement include a $200 application fee.

If you are using a local (to you) law enforcement office to complete your fingerprinting, use a manila envelope to send the fingerprint card, and a check or money order in the amount of $30 to the “Montana Department of Justice.”

  • Montana Criminal Records 2225 Eleventh Avenue PO Box 201403 Helena, MT 59620

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Montana became a compact state on October 1, 2015.

Is Montana a Walk-Through State?

No, Montana is not a walk-through state.

To practice as an RN, LPN, or APRN in Montana, you must have at least 24 contact hours every two years. Twelve of APRNs’ contact hours must be in the area of pharmacotherapeutics if they hold prescriptive authority.

To qualify as contact hours, continuing education courses must be approved by an accrediting organization or provided by:

  • An academic institution of higher learning
  • A continuing education provider, or
  • An APRN certifying body

Host Healthcare is amazing! Best travel co out there! Amanda is the recruiter I have & she is wonderful. She is there from the beginning. From searching for the perfect assignment throughout completion of a contract - Amanda is there for me! Host Healthcare treats their nurses so well

travel nursing jobs montana

Amanda Goad is the most amazing recruiter I have worked with. She is the most responsive and go-getter. She is in constant contact with you or hospitals to get you offers and/or advocating for you. She is super motivated and helpful. If you have the opportunity to use her, you will not regret it.

travel nursing jobs montana

Needed to move across country to be next to my partner, but blindly jumping into a full time job for a hospital system I was not familiar with was out of the question. Host Healthcare (Natalie G specifically) stood by me and helped me fulfill my absurdly specific requests. I was a first time time traveler and I couldn't have made it without the support I received!
Just finished my first contract with Host Healthcare (fifth overall) and they were amazing! Specifically my recruiter Jenny Berroth. Jenny was so helpful and easy to communicate with. I had a couple issues come up and Jenny was all over them and took care of everything so I could just concentrate on being a nurse, while she handled the rest. I can’t recommend Host and Jenny enough! You have to give Host and Jenny a try, you’ll be glad you did!

More about Montana

Big sky backdrop.

Western Montana is where the state’s name (from the Latin or Spanish word for “mountainous”) fits best: steep pitches and narrow north-south valleys line up from the Idaho border to Interstate 15.

These ranges of the Rocky Mountains are shot through with mineral veins, especially copper and silver. The Absaroka and Gallatin ranges are blanketed with volcanic rocks from eruptions in the area of Yellowstone National Park.

In the far northwestern part of the state, glaciers shrouded the mountains, leaving them relatively small and softly formed around U-shaped valleys.

Erosion and uplifts formed the prairie landscape of eastern Montana. Water, frost, and wind have cut gullies and gulches into the plains and sculpted benches or terraces along river valleys.

The northeastern Montana prairie is broad, flat, and underlain by gravel beds that hinder erosion. Glacial debris has enriched the soil, making this some of the state’s best agricultural land.

But south of the Missouri River, where glaciers never left such deposits, the land is desolate and vegetation-poor. In Montana’s badlands, soft bedrock just beneath the surface of bare ground is easily eroded. Pounded by rain, the soil develops a hard crust which exacerbates runoff and makes it difficult for any vegetation to take hold.
