Unlock the Ultimate Guide to Airline Luggage Allowances

Don’t get caught off guard by unexpected baggage fees! With this comprehensive eBook, you’ll have all the information you need at your fingertips.

You have successfully joined our subscriber list.

Have you ever dealt with a broken handle, a missing wheel, or a faulty zipper on a cheap suitcase? Well, you’re not alone. Most suitcases under 100$ will last only for 5-20 uses until they become unusable. If they aren’t backed up by a nice warranty, you’re pretty much screwed. And even if there is some kind of a warranty, it usually lasts only for 1-3 years.

9 Best Luggage Brands With a Lifetime Warranty

That’s why sometimes it’s worth it to spend a seemingly large amount of cash on a suitcase with a lifetime warranty, even if you can get a cheaper alternative. Especially if you’re a pilot, a flight attendant, or a serious business traveler.

Theoretically, you could switch between several 50$ suitcases every other year, but you’ll have to deal with a lot of unexpected incidents, which just isn’t worth it.

In this article, we’ll cover nine luggage brands that offer a lifetime warranty for their suitcases. The brands aren’t listed from best to worst. All of the brands mentioned in this list offer solid lifetime warranties.

Limited V.S. Unconditional Lifetime Warranty

Before we begin, you should understand the difference between a limited warranty, and an unconditional one.

Although we’ve included nine brands in this list, only Briggs & Riley, Eagle Creek, Patagonia, Osprey, Red Oxx, and Nomatic offer a fully unconditional lifetime warranty. This means that they’ll fix any functional defects regardless if it’s airline damage, misuse, or an accident.

All other brands mentioned in this list (Away, Travelpro, and Thule) offer limited lifetime warranties, which means that the warranty will be valid only for “normal use.” Usually, airline damage isn’t covered by limited warranties.

Having said that, this doesn’t mean that “limited” warranties are necessarily bad. For instance, the Away limited lifetime warranty is really good and covers a lot of defects that normal warranties wouldn’t usually cover.

Also, a lot of companies make their warranty terms really long and choose non-specific, subjective wording, which doesn’t really explain much. We’ve tried to avoid these types of companies, and we haven’t included them in this list.

Top Luggage Brands With a Lifetime Warranty to Consider

1. briggs & riley (300$ – 800$).

Briggs and riley lifetime warranty

If you’d speak with anyone working in the airline industry, and ask them what kind of a suitcase they’re using, you should hear Briggs & Riley come up quite a lot. Between frequent flyers, business travelers, and airline pilots, they’re probably the most popular choice out there.

Their suitcases aren’t cheap. In fact, they’re far from cheap, but they’re worth it for those who travel a lot. That’s because they’re incredibly well-built and come with their “Simple as That” lifetime warranty. They were founded in 1993, and since then have become the top choice for frequent flyers.

The warranty covers any functional defects on their luggage for a lifetime, such as broken wheels, zippers, tears in the fabric, or broken handles. That said, they don’t cover any cosmetic damage, such as scratches, dirty fabric, or faded colors.

What makes this warranty great, is that they d on’t really care how you broke the bag. Whether it was airline damage, an accident, or anything else, they’ll fix it. Also, you don’t need any proof of purchase and the warranty transfers between owners. You’ll have to cover the shipping costs to their repair center, and they’ll cover the return shipping costs. It’s by far the best warranty on any luggage brand, so if you’re looking for something that will last, you should choose Briggs & Riley.

2. Away (200$ – 600$)

Away lifetime warranty

JRSK, Inc. (Away) is a much newer luggage company, established only in 2015. Instead of making regular luggage, they offer “smart luggage” , which has become a pretty big trend over the last few years. A few similar companies have popped up, however Away is by far the largest one. Their suitcases come with built-in chargers, smart packing features, and they look really minimal and modern, which is more appealing for a younger audience.

But not only do their suitcases look good – they’re also made to last. They’re made from durable materials and backed up by a really solid lifetime warranty. Although it’s a “limited” warranty, it’s still a really good one.

Their lifetime warranty covers any functional defects, such as cracks in the frame, tears in the fabric, and broken wheels, handles or zippers. The only conditions are that they don’t cover any cosmetic damage and that only defects resulting from “normal use” are covered. In their terms, “normal use” is explained as traveling by air, car, train, boat, or foot.

The good thing is that Away covers all shipping costs to and from the repair centers, which is not very often covered by other warranties. Also, for the warranty to work, you’ll need to provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt or an invoice.

3. Eagle Creek (150$ – 450$)

Eagle creek lifetime warranty

If you’re into outdoor stuff, chances are that you’ve heard of Eagle Creek. They make all kinds of rugged bags for hiking, camping, traveling, and backpacking. Their bags don’t look too professional or classic. Instead, they’re going for a more outdoorsy, long-term-traveler look. So if you’re a business traveler you should probably forget about them.

Although they mostly focus on packing cubes and backpacks, they also offer quite a few softside suitcases, which aren’t too expensive. They definitely aren’t cheap, but they aren’t as expensive as Thule, Nomatic, or Briggs & Riley. And even though they’re priced somewhat affordable, most of their gear comes with their “ No Matter What ” lifetime warranty.

Eagle Creek’s lifetime warranty covers all workmanship and material defects for a lifetime, regardless of the cause. In simple words, this means that they’ll fix any reasonable defects, as long as the bag still looks in a useable condition.

For instance, they’ll fix loose stitching, faulty wheels, and damaged zippers as long as the product still looks in a “good condition”. However, they won’t repair a product that looks like it’s been used a thousand times. If that’s the case, they’ll deem your item to have reached its lifetime.

4. Patagonia (200$ – 350$)

Patagonia lifetime warranty

In its essence, Patagonia is a very similar brand to Eagle Creek. They offer durable gear for traveling, hiking, camping, and backpacking. That said, they’re a much larger company than Eagle Creek, and they mostly focus on outdoor clothing, not gear. Nevertheless, they still offer quite a few duffles, backpacks, and rolling duffles, which are protected by their “ Ironclad” lifetime warranty .

Their “Ironclad” lifetime warranty is so good because it’s a very simple warranty with no hidden rocks. Essentially, they’ll repair their gear free of charge for a lifetime regardless of the cause, except for normal wear and tear.

On their website, they offer a lot of self-repair kits, which you can use yourself to speed up the repair process. If, however, you choose to send the item back to their repair center, you’ll have to pay for the shipping. Return shipping is covered by them.

5. Travelpro (100$ – 400$)

Travelpro lifetime warranty

Travelpro is another luggage brand that’s popular among flight crews and business travelers, similar to Briggs & Riley. They offer various suitcases, backpacks, and duffles which all look sleek and professional. The only difference between Briggs & Riley and Travelpro is that Travelpro’s suitcases and two or three times cheaper, and because of that also not as durable. That said, they’re still durable enough for frequent traveling.

Their suitcases are split between various collections, such as Maxlite 5, Platinum Elite, Crew 11, and others. All of their collections are backed up by their limited lifetime warranty, which covers defects in workmanship and materials.

Alone, this warranty isn’t too useful, because it doesn’t cover airline damage. That’s why in addition to their limited warranty , they also offer their “Trusted companion promise”, which also covers any airline damage and the shipping costs to and from the repair centers.

The duration of the “Trusted companion promise” varies between collections. On the Maxlite 5 collection, it lasts one year, on the Crew 11 three years, and on the Platinum Elite collection for a lifetime. So if you’re looking for the best possible warranty, definitely get something from the Platinum Elite collection.

6. Osprey (200$ – 350$)

Osprey lifetime warranty

Osprey is another great outdoor gear company , similar to Eagle Creek and Patagonia. Their products aren’t sleek, modern, or classic, which means that they’re probably not the right choice for business travelers. Instead, they’re all made in a rugged, outdoors-style look, which is great for long-term travelers. Although their main focus is backpacks, they also offer a large variety of softside suitcases, which are all protected by their “ All Mighty Guarantee. “

This lifetime warranty truly is All-Mighty, because it essentially covers everything, similar to Briggs & Riley. In their terms, they state that they’ll cover any functional defect for a lifetime , free of charge and regardless of the cause. You’ll just have to cover the shipping costs to the repair center.

It’s also worth noting that for this warranty to work, you actually don’t need to be the original owner of this bag, and you don’t need any proof of purchase. Just owning an Osprey product is enough. Their packs and suitcases also aren’t too expensive and with such an amazing warranty, we think that they’re an especially solid choice.

7. Thule (300$ – 550$)

Thule lifetime warranty

Thule is another high-end outdoor gear company that makes rugged and durable products. Instead of focusing on tents, outdoor clothing, and outdoor accessories, they focus on backpacks, luggage, rooftop camping equipment, and various car racks for skiing, cycling, e.t.c. Their suitcases are minimal in design and professional enough to be used for business traveling. That said, they’re quite expensive, similar to Briggs & Riley or Nomatic.

The good thing is that their suitcases are protected by their limited lifetime warranty , which covers defects in material and workmanship for a lifetime. It’s not the best warranty out there because it doesn’t cover most causes, such as misuse, accidents, or airline damage. However, any clear and obvious defects will be fixed free of charge. You’ll just have to cover the shipping costs to their repair center and you’ll need to provide proof of purchase.

8. Nomatic (400$ – 600$)

Nomatic lifetime warranty

Nomatic is a fairly new travel gear brand , established only in 2014 when they launched their first Kickstarter campaign for a well-designed and minimal wallet. Since then, they’ve launched other successful campaigns on Kickstarter and expanded their products into backpacks, luggage, messenger bags, watches, and other travel accessories. All of their products are cleverly designed, minimal, and very durable. That said, they definitely aren’t affordable.

And what’s even better, is that their soft goods and suitcases are protected by a really good lifetime warranty . Their warranty is pretty simple – they’ll fix all functional defects regardless of the cause. If the product is beyond repairs, they’ll send you a free replacement. The only thing that you’ll have to pay for is the shipping costs to the repair center.

So far, they offer only three variations on a single suitcase. That’s because they launched their first suitcase only recently. They’re much more popular in the digital nomad community with their well-designed and durable backpacks.

9. Red Oxx (100$ – 400$)

Red Oxx lifetime warranty

Red Oxx is a truly American luggage company that makes duffles, backpacks, packing cubes, and other packing accessories for sporting, camping, and traveling. All of their bags are handcrafted in Montana, USA, and nothing has been outsourced in other countries. Although they don’t currently offer any wheeled luggage, they offer a wide variety of travel duffles, backpacks, and messenger bags. They’re going for a more rugged, military look, instead of a classic and professional one.

What’s great about Red Oxx is that all of their gear is protected by their “No Bull” lifetime warranty . The warranty terms are quite simple – they’ll fix anything broken regardless of the cause, no questions asked. If the bag is beyond repairs, they’ll even provide a free replacement one time. The only thing that you’ll have to cover is the shipping costs to and from the repair centers.

What About Tumi, Rimowa, Victorinox, Samsonite, and Eddie Bauer?

As you can probably already tell, lifetime warranties don’t come cheap. Both for the customer and the brand. That’s why a lot of brands have abandoned their lifetime warranties because they couldn’t keep it up any further without making losses.

Tumi, Rimowa, Victorinox, and Samsonite have all offered lifetime warranties at some point, but no longer do so. Most notably, Rimowa and Tumi. A few years ago, both brands offered unconditional lifetime warranties, similar to Briggs & Riley, but both abandoned them.

And as for Eddie Bauer, they might still offer a lifetime warranty, but it has significantly dropped in quality. Eddie Bauer was established back in 1920 , and they were always known for their lifetime warranty. But since 2003, the company has gone through bankruptcy and multiple acquisitions, and a lot of people have been saying that they no longer stand behind their lifetime warranty. Right now, their warranty page only has one sentence of text, and no clear policies or timeframes are mentioned there. That’s why we wouldn’t trust their warranty actually being a proper “lifetime warranty” anymore.

When it comes to investing in luggage , understanding the intricacies of lifetime warranties is crucial. The distinction between unconditional and limited warranties can significantly impact your peace of mind and the longevity of your travel gear.

Unconditional lifetime warranties, as offered by top brands like Briggs & Riley, Eagle Creek, Patagonia, Osprey, Red Oxx, and Nomatic, provide unparalleled coverage. These warranties are a testament to the manufacturers’ confidence in the quality and durability of their products. They assure travelers that their luggage will be protected against functional defects, regardless of the cause, be it airline mishandling, misuse, or accidents.

Limited lifetime warranties, on the other hand, offered by brands like Away, Travelpro, and Thule, come with certain restrictions. These warranties typically cover defects resulting from “normal use,” excluding airline damage. While they may not offer the same level of comprehensive coverage as unconditional warranties, they can still provide valuable protection for your luggage investment. For instance, Away’s limited lifetime warranty is known for its generosity in covering various defects that might occur during regular use.

When choosing a luggage brand, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and travel habits. Frequent travelers, especially those who rely on their luggage for business or long-term journeys, may find the unconditional lifetime warranties of brands like Briggs & Riley and Osprey particularly appealing. These warranties offer the assurance that their luggage investment is protected for a lifetime, no matter the circumstances.

For those who value a blend of modern design and durability, brands like Away and Nomatic provide excellent options with solid limited lifetime warranties. These warranties cover functional defects and include provisions for repairs and replacements, often with reasonable conditions.

Ultimately, the right luggage and warranty choice will depend on your individual preferences and priorities. Consider factors such as your travel frequency, budget, and design preferences when making your decision. Regardless of your choice, investing in luggage with a lifetime warranty ensures that you’ll be well-equipped for countless adventures while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with knowing your luggage is backed by a commitment to quality and durability.

In the world of travel, where journeys are filled with unpredictabilities, having reliable luggage with a robust warranty is like having a trusted companion by your side. So, whether you opt for an unconditional or limited lifetime warranty, you can embark on your adventures with confidence, knowing that your luggage is built to last and that the manufacturer stands behind its product. Happy travels!

One response to “9 Best Luggage Brands With a Lifetime Warranty”

Oscar Brumelis, you’ve stirred up some interesting and provoking ideas! I’ve worked in the same field for over a decade and I’ve to confess, there’s something about the dynamics you pointed out that shake the status quo in a good way. I wonder though, have you considered the implications this would have on the grassroots level? Also, what can be done to balance the scales in terms of gender diversity? One time, I observed a clear gender gap in my workspace, and it took years of focused efforts to level it out. Thanks for igniting this conversation, Oscar! 😊 Let’s discuss this further!

Best Luggage Brands With A Lifetime Warranty (2023)

Have you ever owned a cheap suitcase? It is not fun, is it? Within a few months or a year, if something breaks like a zipper, it is done, and you have to buy a new one.

You can even be caught short on the way to the airport, having to buy another cheap replacement when you get there (that’s why there are luggage stores there).

Owning luggage with a lifetime warranty just makes life so simple. If your luggage breaks then you have a lifetime guarantee of it being replaced by the manufacturer.

Not only is this incredibly convenient but it is also much better for the planet and eventually your wallet.

Buying luggage with a lifetime warranty is more expensive but this luggage is usually built to last a lot longer than cheaper luggage, and you will have it for life in most cases.

Difference Between Unconditional & Limited Lifetime Warranty

When you buy luggage with a lifetime warranty, you have two different types of lifetime warranties to choose from

  • Unconditional Warranty

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Unconditional lifetime warranty.

Unconditional lifetime warranties cover damage to your luggage no matter what happens. There is no question about how it happened or who caused the damage. The manufacturer will fix it for you regardless.

Even if you happened to see your luggage in half by mistake, your luggage would still be covered. This is what you really want when you buy a suitcase with lifetime warranty!

A lifetime limited warranty is limited to the terms of the manufacturer which you can usually find on the warranty page of their website.

Generally speaking, a lifetime limited warranty covers manufacturing defects from normal wear or normal use and will not cover things like accidental damage for example.

However, some luggage brands do stand by their limited lifetime warranty and even include some things that unconditional lifetime warranties normally include.

Best Brands of Luggage with Lifetime Warranties

If you are ready to buy some lifetime guarantee luggage, then it is worth knowing about all the luggage brands that offer them, and which of the luggage brands provide the best lifetime warranties too.

Travelpro is one of the most popular luggage companies with those who travel frequently as they offer a range of durable but well-priced luggage.

You can pick up a duffle bag, large suitcase, or backpack for between $100 and $500. The more expensive the luggage the more durable it is and the better the warranty.

With Travelpro, all their luggage comes with a limited lifetime guarantee that only covers defects in material and workmanship, so it is not that useful when it comes to airline damage.

But, the company also offers a “ Trusted companion promise ” that covers your luggage for any airline damages to your luggage. The length of the promise is dependent on the collection you bought.

For example, the length of the Trusted companion promise is just one year for luggage in the cheaper Maxlite 5 collection but lasts for a lifetime for luggage bought in the Platinum Elite collection, which is much more expensive.

So, if you want a true unconditional lifetime guarantee for Travelpro luggage, buy from the Platinum Elite Collection . The company will then fix or replace your luggage forever and even cover the shipping costs.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley is the number one luggage company for those who travel often. Most pilots, air stewards, and frequent flyers own Briggs & Riley luggage, but why?

Well, firstly their luggage is some of the most durable , it looks good and is extremely functional but is expensive ranging from $300 to $800 for a piece of luggage. Now, spending this much is worth it if you travel often and if you get a good warranty.

All Briggs & Riley suitcase with lifetime warranty are worthy of consideration, if you ask me. They will fix anything that breaks on your luggage during its lifetime such as fabric, handles, zippers, wheels, and more.

They do not care how the luggage got damaged, or who bought it, so long as it is Briggs & Riley luggage, the warranty applies and is transferred to whoever is holding the luggage.

You will have to cover the shipping costs to get the luggage to the repair center but they will cover the shipping costs back.

The only thing is that they do not cover cosmetic wear and tear with their lifetime guarantees, only functional ones.

Eagle Creek

Eagle Creek makes some very stylish backpacks, packing cubes, and soft suitcases that suit the outdoors market more than the executive business traveler.

Eagle Creek luggage is super durable and worth the expense as it includes the Eagle Creek No Matter What lifetime warranty.

This warranty covers all defects to workmanship and materials for a lifetime, no matter what caused the defects. Basically, if the luggage is salvageable, it will be fixed under the luggage warranty.

But, if your Eagle Creek bag is at the end of the road, they will say it has reached the end of its lifetime and encourage you to buy a new bag.

Osprey makes some great luggage aimed towards the outdoor market that is both rugged and very functional. Osprey’s specialty lies in backpacks but you can also find duffles, soft suitcases, and lots more for a pretty reasonable price considering the quality.

Every Osprey bag, no matter the price, comes with their All Mighty Guarantee which is a pretty fantastic lifetime warranty.

The Osprey warranty is pretty much the same as Briggs & Riley. Osprey will fix anything regardless of how it happened for whoever is holding the bag. It doesn’t matter who bought the bag, you do not need a receipt, so long as you have an Osprey bag in your possession, it is covered.

All you have to do is pay for the shipping costs to get the bag to their repair center. In terms of value for money vs warranty, Osprey is definitely one of the best.

Patagonia is a very well-known outdoor brand that also makes some great luggage. Their waterproof duffle bags are epic if you are interested!

With every Patagonia product comes the Patagonia “Ironclad” lifetime warranty which is crystal clear when it comes to the terms.

Patagonia will repair everything they make, for a lifetime for free, or for a small charge if it is due to wear and tear. You can even grab a self-repair kit if the breakage is simple to fix and you need to use your gear right away.

Away is a very popular manufacturer of “smart luggage” featuring things like in-built chargers and intelligent packing compartments.

Their luggage is super tough, very functional, and comes with a great lifetime warranty too. It covers everything but cosmetic wear and tear.

So any cracks, broken wheels, zippers, etc will be fixed so long as the damage occurs during normal use, which includes traveling via all modes of transport.

All shipping costs are also covered by the company but you do need to provide proof of purchase for the warranty to be valid.

Nomatic is quite new to the luggage market but is making its mark pretty quickly. They design and make super durable, sleek, functional backpacks, suitcases, bags, and more.

However, Nomatic luggage is also rather expensive but it does come with an epic lifetime warranty.

No matter what happens to your luggage, they will fix it for free and if they can not fix it, send you a brand new one to replace it. All you have to cover is the shipping costs.

Red Oxx makes all its luggage in the US and does not outsource one single part of its business. They make great backpacks, duffles, and more for the outdoors from their base in Montana.

Every bit of luggage Red Oxx makes is covered by their No Bull Lifetime Warranty. With their warranty, they will fix any damage no matter how it happened, and if they can not fix it, give you a replacement for free – you only get one replacement though.

You will have to cover the shipping costs for the repairs/replacements though.

Thule Subterra Spinner 63cm/25 Black

Thule is another excellent luggage company that makes super-durable backpacks, duffels, suitcases, and more items for use in the outdoors.

Being so tough and durable their luggage is on the very expensive side and their warranty isn’t quite good enough for the price in my eyes.

The Thule lifetime warranty only covers defects in material and workmanship. It does not cover damage from airlines, travel, etc.

Tom Bihn makes all kinds of duffles, backpacks, packing cubes, and other smaller bags too with both great style and durability.

Their lifetime warranty only covers material and workmanship defects and no more. They will, however, repair a damaged bit of luggage for a small fee so you can continue to use their luggage and not replace it with new luggage.

What Does a Lifetime Warranty for Luggage Really Cover?

Things to keep in mind before you shop, sharing is nice.

We respect your privacy . All email addresses you provide will be used just for sending this story.

travel time luggage warranty

Luggage takes a beating. It's lobbed from the cargo hold to the runway in blizzards and monsoons, and wheeled mercilessly over cobblestones and off of high curbs. All of this abuse makes the lifetime warranties offered by some top-scoring luggage brands, including Away, Briggs & Riley, and Eagle Creek, definitely appealing. But what do they really cover?

In our most recent survey of more than 38,000 CR members, 30 percent had complaints about luggage, including broken zippers, handles, and wheels, split seams, and materials that wore out. The good news is that—generally speaking—lifetime warranties will cover all of those problems. But as with most warranties, there are exclusions.

Here are things to keep in mind when purchasing a bag with a lifetime warranty.

Exclusions.  In general, lifetime warranties don't cover cosmetic damage, such as scuffs, stains, scratches, dents, and other "wear and tear" that doesn't affect the bag's functionality. And lifetime warranties sometimes apply only to the original owner. Away, for instance, doesn't cover bags purchased secondhand or from unauthorized retailers. Briggs & Riley and Eagle Creek, however, say they will repair their bags free of charge regardless of whether they were purchased new or used.

Repair vs. replacement.  Companies generally reserve the right to repair a bag and will replace it only if a fix isn't possible. Replacement bags may be a similar but not identical model, and may also be a different color.

How long is a lifetime? Some lifetime warranties, such as Eagle Creek's, cover a bag only for its product life. In this case, a manufacturer may refuse to repair or replace a bag it determines has reached the end of that life. That means buying a suitcase with a lifetime warranty doesn't ensure you'll never have to purchase another one. Away and Briggs & Riley say that they place no such limitation on their warranties.

Shipping costs.  Repair and replacement may be free; shipping may not be. Eagle Creek and Briggs & Riley, for instance, require consumers to pay for shipping a bag to their repair facilities but will pay the return shipping costs. Away will pay all shipping charges.

Proof of purchase.  Away requires proof of purchase for a bag to be covered by its limited lifetime warranty. Briggs & Riley and Eagle Creek require no such documentation.

FAQ Section: Luggage With Lifetime Warranty

A warranty can play a pivotal role when making an informed decision on what luggage is perfect for you. A lifetime warranty not only speaks volumes about the brand’s confidence in its product but also provides travelers with peace of mind. Here are some frequently asked questions about luggage with lifetime warranty:

Why do some luggage brands offer a lifetime warranty?

Brands that offer a lifetime warranty are often confident in the durability and quality of their products. They know that their luggage will stand the test of travel. A lifetime warranty also serves as a testament to the brand’s commitment to customer satisfaction and trust.

Does a lifetime warranty cover all types of damages?

No, most lifetime warranties cover manufacturing defects and issues that arise from normal use. They typically do not cover cosmetic damages like scratches or dents, nor do they cover damages resulting from misuse, abuse, or airline mishandling. But if you do find luggage with lifetime warranty that covers it all, you have found a gem.

Do I need proof of purchase for my warranty?

In the luggage industry, warranty claims often require proof of purchase. However, some brands, like Briggs & Riley, don’t need any proof, making the process smoother for customers.

How do I claim a warranty if my luggage gets damaged?

If your luggage faces an issue covered under the warranty, you should contact the brand’s customer service or visit their official website. Most brands require proof of purchase and may ask you to send in photos of the damage. Depending on the brand’s policy, they might repair, replace, or offer a refund for the product.

How many times have you seen someone dragging a suitcase with a missing wheel? Or clothes spilling out of a bag with a busted zipper on the luggage carousel? Chances are high that that bag was from a brand that doesn’t offer a lifetime warranty. Sure, it’s tempting to buy a $79 suitcase at a discount store and hope for the best, but you often get what you pay for when it comes to luggage. If you invest in a quality piece of luggage, however, it’s unlikely it will ever let you down. That’s how you save money in the long run. A good travel bag can take whatever you throw at it. Quality luggage should last you at least 50 trips — if not more — no matter how many abusive handlers and stacked runway carts it encounters. There are budget travelers who’ve taken three-year-long trips around the world with the same backpack. And many business road warriors have been leaving the house each week with the same suitcase for years. That cheap suitcase from the discount store is just not going to perform at the same level. Spending more now on one that’s made well could save you a lot of frustration — and an emergency replacement purchase down the line.

Look for the Warranty

The easiest way to see which companies really believe in their products is to look at the warranty. While online reviews may tell you who likes their purchase right after they bought it, the warranty policy lets you know whether that company’s products have a good chance of holding up over time. If your bag is guaranteed for life, you know the people who designed it really believe it’s going to last. Otherwise, imagine how much they’d spend on repairs or replacements. So which brands make luggage that lasts? Here’s a list of our luggage companies with lifetime warranties, brands you can depend on to back up what they sell.

Our Favorite Luggage Brands with Lifetime Warranties

Price Range: $250 – $800

The luggage companies with a really strong lifetime warranty tend to come up with some catchy registered trademark name for it. Briggs & Riley describes its as “simple as that,” to say it will fix your bag for any reason. If you ask a group of 10 business travelers who jet around on a weekly basis what kind of suitcase they use, there’s a good chance half of them will name Briggs & Riley. The bags are not designed to look pretty in fashion magazines or win prizes as the lightest suitcases on offer. Rather, they’re built to be functional and rugged. If for any reason something fails on you years down the line, get in touch with the company and it’ll make it right. If you’re the DIY type, the company will even send a self-repair kit. From the maker’s mouth : “If your bag is ever broken or damaged, we will repair it free of charge, no proof of purchase needed, no questions asked.”

Just as Briggs & Riley is the clear winner with the business traveler crowd, Osprey is the champ with long-term globetrotters. Whether you’re in Bangkok, Marrakech or Tierra del Fuego, you’re going to see an Osprey backpack (or maybe 20). Osprey’s catchy guarantee is the “All Mighty Guarantee” and if it can’t fix your bag, it’ll replace it. It doesn’t just make backpacks either. I’ve got a rolling 26-inch Osprey suitcase I’ve used for seven years, and the only slight problem I’ve had is the rubber-and-cord zipper pulls dry rotted while sitting in a Florida garage for a few years. Otherwise, good as new. I’ve also got a few of the daypacks that have been going strong for even longer. From the  maker’s mouth : “Osprey will repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge – whether it was purchased in 1974 or yesterday.”

When you buy from a brand that’s been around since 1975, there’s a pretty good chance it’s managed to make customers happy. Eagle Creek boasts a “No Matter What” guarantee, with a lifetime warranty backed by a return rate of less than 1%. This is another brand I personally recommend from experience — in this case more than two decades of experience. Twice I’ve had to get in touch with the company after a suitcase crapped out on me. The first time, a zipper failed on an old model it didn’t make anymore, so it replaced the whole bag with a comparable newer version. Later the rubber met the road on one of my rolling carry-ons and stayed there: one wheel still worked but had lost its tire. After we chatted by e-mail, it ended up sending me a new set of wheels, and I easily replaced both with an Allen wrench. There’s one caveat with this company though: only its high-end luggage products are covered. The Pack-it cubes or packable duffel bags, for instance, are not. You have to make sure it lists the “No Matter What” guarantee on the page when comparing suitcases or backpacks. From the  maker’s mouth : “Our Lifetime Warranty covers workmanship and materials against defect for the entire life of the product.”

Red Oxx has one attribute that sets it apart from nearly every other company on this list: made in America. Its manufacturing facility is in Billings, Montana, and it stands behind everything that goes out the door. The catchy name for it? The “No Bull Lifetime Warranty.” Its well-made, well-designed bags are meant to hold up to a hundred trips. You do have to pay for shipping both ways, but it’ll repair your bag or replace it if something has failed. The guarantee is transferable too: no questions asked if you got it from your brother when he moved away. For new purchases, you need to buy direct at RedOxx.com. Being made in America, the company would have to double the price or manufacture abroad to get into retail stores. From the  maker’s mouth : “Our ‘No Bull’ Lifetime Warranty is, in a word, unconditional!”

Red Oxx isn’t the only brand making luggage in the USA. Tom Bihn of Seattle has been building up a loyal tribe of fans since 1972. I can’t say I’ve had its Aeronaut carry-on bag that long, but I have been using it for more than a decade on trips where cabin bin space is at a premium. I’ve also got a few of the packing cubes I’ve been using for that long as well. The company apparently needs a consultant to help come up with a catchy warranty name because it’s simply listed as “Lifetime Guarantee” on the website. Buy direct at Tombihn.com, where you can also see photos of the people who made your bag. From the  maker’s mouth : “We often see Tom Bihn bags that are still solid and in use after five, ten, fifteen, even twenty or twenty-five years, with minor repairs needed here or there. But remember: only true love lasts forever.”

There’s no catchy name for a separate “from the maker’s mouth” for Eddie Bauer. That’s because there’s the least amount of text of any company on this list for its  guarantee page . This is all it says: “Our products are built to last. If your Eddie Bauer product fails to perform as designed, bring it back and we will replace it.” Well, okay then! There’s not much more on the returns page either. Bring it back to the store or print out a pre-paid shipping label to send the item back. No legalese, no hedging. Eddie Bauer is mostly known for its clothing, but it put out several heavy-duty duffel bags for adventure travelers, as well as some rolling suitcases meant for serious travelers, not runway posers.

When you hear Jansport, you probably think of kids heading off to school with their books. Heck, I used one of its daypacks all the way through college many years ago. But the company actually started out making packs for backcountry hikers, and it still manufactures a few bags meant for more than a trip to a classroom. The 70-liter backpacks and 40-liter ones work well as a carry-on, laptop backpacks and a rolling backpack/suitcase with a handle. All of the bags come with a lifetime guarantee: if it can’t be fixed, the company will replace it. From the  maker’s mouth : “We stand by our packs for a lifetime and since we’ve been making packs since 1967, that’s a guarantee you can stand by.”

If your tastes run to leather more than nylon, straps over wheels, then Saddleback might be the brand to check out. Instead of a lifetime warranty, it offers a 100-year warranty. But, really, are you going to outlive a well-made leather bag? Visit some museums out west and you’ll see saddles that were crafted before Wyoming was a state. And the leather still looks great. There are limits to a small company’s patience, however, and it’s seen it all. So it’s not a true “no questions asked” warranty if you’ve dragged your bag behind a motorcycle or left it out in the rain for days. (The warranty page is a fun read with some great examples.) If something wore out or broke down naturally through no fault of your own, however, the company will make it right. From the  maker’s mouth : “Just remember that before you die, get all your Saddleback stuff sorted out in your will, and if there’s ever an issue, just have one of your descendants contact me or one of my descendants and we’ll get you sorted out.”

Visit Saddleback

Other “Lifetime” Guarantees

There are a few other luggage brands that have “limited” in their warranty and lots of legalese back-out language on the page, so these aren’t included here. You may be able to return a suitcase a few years down the line from Travelpro, Away or Samsonite if you paid enough. Alas, most of the others only give you a year to return a bag, including expensive Tumi. Also, you may see a reference to a lifetime guarantee at LL Bean in older articles. Sadly it ended that in February of 2018 and reduced it to just one year, saying “We will work with our customers to reach a fair solution if a product is defective in any way” after that. So if you want a true, lifetime guarantee, go with one of our options above. And if you set a Deal Alert , we’ll let you know as soon as your favorites go on sale.

4 Best Travel Gear Brands with Lifetime Warranties

Mike Richard

There’s a reason cheap gear is often so, well, cheap . At The Manual, we believe in paying a little more once for a well-built product, rather than saving a few bucks at a time only to have to replace your gear every few years. With that in mind, here are four of our favorite travel brands with near-bulletproof lifetime warranties. Buy one backpack , hat, or pair of pants from these trusted manufacturers, and it’s likely to be the last one you’ll ever pay for.

Eagle Creek

Saddleback leather co., briggs & riley.

We’ve been huge fans of Eagle Creek ’s entire line of travel products — especially their hybrid rolling backpacks and clever packing organizers — for years now. Everything in their catalog is durable and well-made, meaning it’s all destined to outlast you. But, if something does break, they offer one of the industry’s best warranties. Appropriately dubbed the “No Matter What Warranty,” it’s exactly what it sounds like. If, during the lifetime of your gear, any part should fail due to a manufacturer’s defect, they’ll replace or repair it. Period.

What We’re Stoked About for 2018

Eagle Creek’s Gear Warrior Wheeled Luggage is compact enough to be reasonably portable but large enough to fit just about any bit of gear you’ll need for a week-long vacation somewhere far, far away.

Patagonia has been synonymous with the great outdoors and adventure travel  for more than half a century. They’ve made no bones about the fact that their apparel and outerwear costs more because it’s superior to anything else on the market. They want you to buy it once and own it for life. Their Ironclad Guarantee is a testament to that promise. If something of theirs doesn’t live up to your expectations — whether technically defective or not — just return it.

Patagonia’s new Nano-Air Light Hybrid Hoody is an ultra-durable, flyweight rain shell that’s versatile and warm in all but the most frigid conditions.

While most modern travel brands have opted to go all-in with nylon, polypropylene, and other unpronounceable synthetic materials, Saddleback Leather Co’s catalog is almost exclusively ( wait for it … ) leather-centric. Just about every piece is sexy as hell in a classic “John Muir was here” sort of way. But, the kicker is that they stand behind their all-natural products with a 100-Year Warranty . The guarantee covers all defects in craftsmanship and the brand promises to make good on fixing just about anything that wears out prematurely.

Their Leather Front Pocket Backpack is the sort of pack your great-grandpappy would’ve used to conquer the PCT.

The Briggs & Riley aesthetic is one of understated sophistication. Their exceptionally well-made luggage is deceptively simple. While you pay handsomely for this level of quality and engineering, every product is backed by their “simple as that” guarantee. It’s arguably the best warranty in the travel gear business. They promise to repair “all functional aspects of your Briggs & Riley bag for the life of your bag.” Even damage by the airlines will be repaired free of charge (just pay for one-way shipping).

Their 27” Medium Spinner carries up to a week’s worth of kit in a beautiful, lightweight, ultra-durable shell that would be right at home on the International Space Station.

In 2020, travel was nil. Then in 2021, everyone was still staying pretty close to home. Now in 2022, most borders are open, travel restrictions are ending, and people are hitting the road and taking to the skies in growing numbers. If you're among them, you're probably thinking that now is a good time to update some of the travel gear that you haven't used since the twenty-teens. To that end, we're looking at the 2022 travel essentials, whether you'll be out for a weekend, taking the week off for a domestic vacation, or jetting for a prolonged international adventure.

We’re big fans of Miami here at The Manual, but sometimes you want to experience the beautiful beaches, delectable food, and world-class shopping sans the hustle and bustle of the big city life.

To discover what the rest of South Florida has to offer, all you need to do is travel one hour north to Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding areas of Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton to indulge in gorgeous nature, an outstanding bar and restaurant scene, and some of the most breathtaking beaches in the country. Check out our guide for the best places to shop, eat and stay the next time you find yourself on this fun-filled stretch of the Atlantic coast.

Back in the day, luggage was pretty basic, serving as little more than a boxy receptible in which to corral all your stuff over the course of your journey. It wasn’t until the 1970s that someone actually “invented” the concept of attaching wheels to a suitcase, thereby making travel forever easier. Since then, the best suitcases have featured an ever-growing array of slick features to make them more functional, and they’ve often become more pleasing to the eye to boot.

With that in mind, we’re taking a look at the best suitcases for venturing forth. These have been selected to suit a wide range of travel styles and needs, ensuring that you can pack the right bag for every circumstance.

10 Best Luggage Brands With Lifetime Warranty

Photo of author

A suitcase with lifetime warranty worth a fortune as it provides peace of mind and a high protection for your belongings.

Even though luggage can be expensive, but a lifetime warranty ensures that if something goes wrong with your suitcase, the manufacturer will repair or replace it without any additional costs.

Also this will eliminates the need to pay for a new suitcase or repair the luggage yourself. Additionally, a lifetime warranty indicates that the manufacturer takes the durability and quality of their luggage seriously.

We’ve rounded up a handy-dandy list of 13 luggage brands with unconditional and lifetime warranty you will never regret obtaining one of their suitcases.

Let’s dive right in.

black luggage bag near a wall

The Difference Between Unconditional Lifetime Warranty And Limited Lifetime Warranty

Before we dive into the best luggage warranty, first you will need to know the difference between the two types of lifetime warranty.

  • Limited lifetime warranty : the most common one, this warranty covers only manufacturing defects and there are a large number of brands that offer it especially for expensive products. This warranty will not cover airline damage, trains or any other damage caused by accidents.
  • Unconditional lifetime warranty: this warranty is offered by few brands like Briggs & Riley, Eagle Creek and Patagonia , and it covers all the manufacturing defects and any other type of accidents or damage, the brand will repair the bag and they don’t care if your suitcase is damaged with an airline or in a train or any other reason.

Both warranties are good, even the 10 years warranty is better than five or two years warranty, because airline luggage damage is not something that is occurring frequently, and as long as you protect your suitcase well you don’t have to worry.

However, I will always prefer to go with the second one, unconditional lifetime warranty , as a frequent traveler, even though their suitcases will be a bit pricey.

Here Is The Luggage Brands Before We Go To The Details

Even though some of these luggage brands can be a little high-priced, with their lifetime warranty it is worth the amount you invest on them, even if you find cheaper alternatives with no extended warranty.

If you are a frequent traveler, or someone traveling for business, I highly recommend investing in one of these guys.

The brands are listed according to our favorites.

1.Briggs & Riley

Briggs-and-riley-luggage

It is also a trend and the luggage choice for pilots and airlines crews , and if you are a frequent traveler Briggs & Riley is the way to go.

The reason why Briggs & Riley tops this list of luggage brands with lifetime warranty is that their warranty covers almost any kind of defects, manufacturing, and even airline damage that some other luggage brands won’t cover.

To benefit from the warranty, you just need to reach out to Brigs & Riley customer service and explain to them what is going on with your luggage and they will happily assist you, by repairing or even replacing your piece. They don’t even require proof of purchase.

You will need to take care of the shipping and handling costs to send your bag to the repairing center.

2. Away Luggage

Away is a popular US brand established in 2015 and located in New York City.

Delsey is a popular luggage brand, founded in 1946 in Paris France, the brand makes trendy pieces of luggage, with astonishing designs.

Their warranty depends on the product you have, 2, 5, 10 and a limited lifetime warranty which is applicable for few products.

But if you notice a defect in your suitcase for the first 30 days you still can send it back and they will either repair it or change it, but you will need to cover the shipping and handling expenses.

However, Delsey is still a good brand and a great choice, even unfortunately, they don’t cover airlines damage compared with Briggs & Riley or Travelpro.

thule-luggage

Another outdoor brand that has durable backpacks and hiking gear.

They have some good suitcases that can be used for any type of travel, which may seem a bit expensive for some travelers.

Thul e Luggage is backed with a limited lifetime warranty, for all the manufacturing and workmanship defects.

However, the warranty will not cover any defects caused by airlines or normal wear and tear, scratches, accidents, modifications or any types of repair other than those authorized by Thule.

So Is Lifetime Warranty Really Lifetime?

Most luggage brands keep their words, you just need to read their warranty policy carefully to know if it is a limited or unconditional lifetime warranty.

However, some companies may not keep their promise, with providing poor customer service or even ignoring your request.

The lifetime warranty will be a technique for a company to increase their revenue, and sometimes that will add in the price of the product or even in the repair costs, meaning the luggage can be overpriced to cover the possibility of returns or luggage damage.

Because that is why they are in the business, to make some money.

Some other luggage brands have already offered lifetime warranty but they don’t offer it anymore, either because they experience a high volume of returns or because they do not want to raise their costs.

Do I Need Proof Of Purchase For Warranty?

It will depend on the brands, however; most of the companies will require a proof or purchase, like a receipt when you want to claim the warranty.

Mot of luggage brands will require that you buy the suitcase from an accredited seller, if you buy the suitcase from an non accredited seller, even if you have proof of purchase the warranty will not be applied.

Even though some brands like Briggs & Riley do not require a proof or a receipt, you can easily send your bag to repair without any issues.

Final Thoughts

A luggage brand with a lifetime warranty will most likely feel confident about the durability of their luggage.

This type of assurance is generally valid only for items that are new and never used. It is used to ensure that first-time buyers are protected against defects in the product that have occurred during the manufacturing process.

With a lifetime warranty, you know that your luggage will be repaired or changed if there are any manufacturing defects for the life of the luggage.

Best Luggage for International Travel to Make Your Trip Abroad Easy and Enjoyable

Travelers with luggage using smart phones while waiting in line for boarding at airport

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

More Americans are traveling abroad with over “one-in-five Americans planning on vacationing in a foreign country in the near future,” according to Reuters . I myself head to Sweden for a few weeks every summer to visit my in-laws, and packing our suitcases with clothes—both sweaters and bathing suits because Swedish weather can be unpredictable—along with gifts for relatives is a days-long undertaking.

When traveling internationally, most people focus on important stuff like updating passports, understanding customs requirements, making hotel reservations, and planning exciting itineraries, but choosing the right luggage for your long-haul trip ranks up there in ensuring you and yours have a fun and hassle-free trip.

“Choosing the right luggage helps to keep your trip smooth and uncomplicated,” says Ivette Manner s, a travel and bridal writer who goes around the globe for her job several times a year. “I travel often for work and leisure and like to keep things simple. You don’t want to rush through airports, customs, taxis, and public transport being bogged down with a lot of baggage—and you don’t want to make the mistake of leaving anything crucial behind.” she says.

What to consider when choosing luggage for international travel

Situation equals size.

Whether you’re jetting off for a weekend wedding or embarking on a multi-city trip will help you decide which type of suitcase you need: carry-on, mid size, oversized, weekender, and more. Also, how many are in your party? Traveling solo or with family, friends, or loved ones?

Visiting Europe with my family for two or three weeks means we need larger, checked luggage paired with smaller carry-on backpacks and totes for the flights. When traveling for work, Manners takes “one roomy, zip-top tote bag and a medium-size suitcase.” The length of stay, and purpose of travel will help determine the size and type of luggage you need.

Airline compliance

It is zero fun to have to check your carry-on last-minute or pay extra exorbitant fees because you overstuffed your luggage and exceeded weight and size limits. “As soon as you book your flight, check the airline’s baggage allowance and restrictions policy,” cautions Manners, so you can stay within the baggage dimensions. “It’s a good idea to invest in a bag within the baggage dimensions allowed by the airline(s) you frequently travel on, so you’re not surprised at the airport with extra baggage charges,” she adds.

According to TravelPro , while most domestic airlines allow you up to 35 pounds for carry-on baggage for domestic flights and 50 pounds max for checked luggage (though you can pay extra for up to 70 pounds), international travel often caps carry-ons at 18 pounds. The exception being British Airways which allows a whopping 51 pounds for carry-on bags! Kayak says that a carry-on bag should be no longer than 21.5 inches long, though this does vary airline by airline and I have friends who swear they fly everywhere with their 22-inch long carry-on. To be safe, and avoid trouble, always check ahead to know your baggage allowance before your trip!

To stay in compliance—and if you’re someone who tends to overpack (insert raised hand emoji)—Manners recommends getting a luggage scale to keep yourself in check. “Some people also swear by packing cubes,” adds Manners, which some say allows you to pack even more while keeping clothing sorted and wrinkle-free. If you’re new to, but interested in packing cubes, Manners recommends purchasing inexpensive options on Amazon to see if they would work for you before your next big trip.

Luggage should last years and is a worthy investment, but with many high-quality and low-cost options on the market you don’t have to break the bank. Legacy names like Samsonite keep innovation and quality high while still being fairly priced. “Look at a brand’s warranty,” advises Manners, which safeguards against wear, tear, and damages that happen frequently with luggage. For instance, the premium brand, Briggs and Riley , comes with a higher price tag but a lifetime guarantee. I chose bags for this list from around $100 to several hundred dollars to meet all your price points and needs.

Materials and mobility

“People love those fancy aluminum suitcases ,” says Manners. “But while they look super chic, they’re not always practical, not to mention super expensive.” They get banged up and scratched and you have to take them to the brand to get repaired. “But polycarbonate hard shell suitcases can take more wear,” she says. Other things to consider in a suitcase are the materials: are you looking for soft or hardshell? Also, pay attention and test out zippers, locks, roomy interior compartments that can expand, and the durability and quality of wheels.

Best size luggage for international travel

“I like medium-size check-in suitcases,” says Manners.” It helps keep you from overpacking, but allows you to take what you need for a week of travel. And you’ll be able to move around easier in transit.” If traveling alone or sharing a suitcase, we find medium size suitcases (usually around 26-28 inches in length) to be ideal. Look for suitcases that can expand and compress for extra packing needs. Weighing around 10 pounds empty, you can pack a lot, but make sure you don’t go over the airline weight limits.

Tips for buying a suitcase for international travel

Online retailers and outlet stores are both great places to buy luggage , especially during major shopping days. But you should first check the baggage requirements of the airline you intend to fly, including restrictions, and extra charges, so you’re not met with any surprises.

Once you’ve determined your right size, Manners suggest “finding one with well-made spinning wheels and a comfortable, sturdy retractable handle.” Another thing to consider is the material, like soft side, hard side, waterproof, etc. And don’t forget important details, like durable zippers, solid locks, and lots of room and interior compartments to pack everything you need. Many brands offer 60-100-day free trials and money-back guarantees, so utilize these policies to try out the luggage before you invest.

How we selected the best luggage for international travel

As a former travel writer and editor myself, I have zig-zagged continents for work and leisure. I also tapped jet-setting friends, colleagues, and experts who weighed in on their favorite luggage. I tested different brands, read through customer reviews and looked at certain criteria.

Luggage size and type

Whether you’re jetting off for a swanky girls weekend or a longer trip abroad, the type of trip you’re taking will help determine which luggage to choose, so I rated them all (weekender, duffel, backpack, carry-on, larger checked suitcases, and trunks), examining their storage capacity, expandability, organizational features, weight, and construction.

Features and materials

Luggage these days offer so many high-tech features, like charging ports and nearly-indestructible thermoplastic exteriors, as well as fun extras including laundry bags, TSA-approved locks, multiple storage capabilities, along with lifetime guarantees that will help your luggage last a lifetime.

International airline compliance

I found international baggage allowance to differ slightly from American domestic, so be sure and check your airline baggage requirements first before travel. That said, for carry-ons, the general rule of thumb is for an international carry-on to be no bigger than 21.5-21.7 inches long and weigh 18 pounds. Again, while rules (and adherence) vary from airline to airline, to be safe, I chose carry-ons that meet these requirements.

I chose luggage at every price point and chose the best in class across the board from budget to luxe in all types of luggage.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Which luggage brand is best for international travel.

Well-known luggage brands like Samsonite and Travelpro have earned reputations for both quality and affordability, so they made my list. “I really recommend Away and TravelPro suitcases,” adds Manners. I also included more expensive options like Briggs & Riley, because their no-questions-asked lifetime guarantee on all of their luggage is unmatched industry wide.

Is hard luggage better than soft for international travel?

“Some people love hard case bags, but I find that you can pack more things in a softside suitcase.” says Manners. Hardside versus softside is really a preference. Softside seems to scuff less because of the treated materials, while hardside suitcases can also handle wear and tear and seem to be more trendy these days.

What is the best material for checked luggage?

“That depends on preference, but a nylon with coating to prevent scuffs and scratches for softside luggage, and polycarbonate-shell or thermoplastic are incredibly durable If you like hard case suitcases,” says Manners.

How many suitcases can you take on an international flight?

This often depends on the type of airplane ticket you purchase. Some tickets include your first checked bag for free, then you have to pay a fee for additional bags. Other tickets don’t include baggage, so you’ll have to pay a certain fee for the first checked-in bag, plus fees for additional bags. Look into bag allowances before you buy your tickets, warns Manners, so you can factor the cost of your checked bags into your flight—and avoid surprises at the airport.

The exterior of this checked bag is constructed of a polyester fabric with a twill pattern, and the bag expands quite a bit to fit in any additional souvenirs you may want to bring home with you.

What our editors say:

I am obsessed with this soft-sided checked bag – it fits an absurd amount of stuff. You can easily pack enough clothes, shoes, accessories and gear for a two- to three-week trip, and even when it's filled to the brim, the wheels and handle make it easy to maneuver the suitcase across many types of terrain. Mine has been checked numerous times, and the darker-colored fabric with its subtle design means any scuffs are pretty impossible to see and it hasn't scratched or dented at all. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

A TSA-approved lock keeps your belongings safe, and the self-aligning wheels make for easy rolling across a range of surfaces. Solgaard Check-In Closet Original – Medium in black.

With its built-in shelving system, you don't have to unpack – just pack your clothes into the five shelves and, when you get to the hotel, hang the removable shelving system for easy access. The suitcase is made with a durable polycarbonate shell. It comes with a TSA-approved three-digit lock, and the frictionless wheels paired with its comfortable handle make this checked bag easy to maneuver.

What our contributors say:

Not only does this suitcase make it easier to travel, but I also love that it is designed with sustainability in mind. Each one is made from 100% recycled plastic that is collected in coastal communities, in order to prevent it from going into the ocean. The one downside is that the shelving does take up some room, so you might be trading convenience for maximum capacity. – Sharael Kolberg

How we tested

Taking into account durability, capacity and features, our team tested more than a dozen checked bags from a variety of brands at a range of price points. We tested to see how the overall structure of the bag works for travel needs, along with the maneuverability of the wheels and comfort of the handle on a range of surfaces from moving walkways to cobblestones. After taking these suitcases on a variety of journeys, we've selected these checked suitcases as the best for 2024.

Best TSA-approved locking luggage in 2024

I f you've been using the same bag for years, investing in a great piece (or set) of luggage can upgrade your travel experience. Like the selection of bags we'll show you below, many of the best luggage in 2024 comes equipped with TSA-approved locks.

Why select a piece of luggage with a TSA-approved lock? As the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) explains , if its officers need to inspect your locked, carry-on or  checked luggage , a TSA-approved lock may save you from having your lock cut off. That's because a TSA-approved lock can be opened by TSA officers with a universal master key.

While TSA-approved locks can be purchased and placed on luggage you already own, many newer luggage pieces incorporate them into their design. We've rounded up some of the best luggage pieces with TSA-approved locks. Some of these easy-to-transport bags also offer useful tech features, such as USB outlets and charging ports.
