Is “A Dog’s Journey” one of the sweetest canine films out there, or one of the meanest? While I generally favor the latter reading, the gentle sniffling mixed with occasional awws and chuckles that broke out during my screening suggests the majority of the audiences will understandably lean otherwise, as they did with the film’s 2017 predecessor, “A Dog’s Purpose.” In theory, this unconditional affection seems mighty unjust for a shameless family franchise that kills an average of four to five dogs per movie, sometimes, in unspeakably wretched fashions—seriously, where is John Wick when you need him? And yet, as visually uninspired and ideologically conservative as it may be, there seems to be something beguiling about the series that keeps one (including myself, admittedly) on a short leash. Turns out, very few are immune to the sneaky suggestion that certain dogs and humans are meant for each other for life.   

This is indeed the philosophy behind TV veteran Gail Mancuso ’s “A Dog’s Journey,” which follows in the paw prints of its Lasse Hallström-directed ancestor with its assembly line of doggie fatalities. (Every dog-loving cinephile’s most cherished website “DoesTheDogDie.com” must be having a field trip with these films.) And before you cry out “spoiler alert,” know that spelling out the mounting corpses of our four-legged furry pals in these tearjerkers is not exactly a wrongdoing. Adapted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-selling novels, the pair of syrupy films follows a Buddhist philosophy, imagining a world in which a dog’s spirit reincarnates in the body of a new adorable puppy (somehow, voiced by Josh Gad even when it’s a female) and pursues its original human to eternity.

“Journey” picks up where “Purpose” had left off, dropping us on a tranquil Midwestern farm ran by the impossibly wholesome couple Ethan ( Dennis Quaid ) and his wife Hannah ( Marg Helgenberger ). Their carefree “Boss Dog” Bailey, a handsome Great Pyrenees Bernese Mountain Dog, runs around the picturesque fields and happily chases his own tail, while keeping a watchful eye on Ethan and Hannah’s baby granddaughter CJ (affably played by Abby Ryder and Kathryn Presscott in later ages), parented by the couple’s heavy-drinking widowed daughter-in-law Gloria ( Betty Gilpin ). Bailey exits the picture soon enough—poor Boss Dog has a cancerous lump—but returns promptly in the body of Molly the mischievous Beagle, reuniting with the 11-year-old CJ to keep a promise he’s made to Ethan. Now living away from her grandparents with the negligent Gloria, CJ finds the kind of comfort and support every child needs in Molly.

Our determined pooch returns again and again as Bailey drops dead in a continuous loop: once, as the African Boerboel Big Dog living on a roadside convenience store (or, “a house made of snacks,” as he calls it), and then as the snippy Terrier Max. Meanwhile, CJ goes through her own transformation and finds herself in the unforgiving streets of New York City as a budding musician with a severe case of stage fright. A series of mean boyfriends—one, a dangerous stalker responsible for Molly’s horrific death—doesn’t help with her insecurity, until she stumbles upon her beloved childhood friend Trent ( Henry Lau ) and falls in love. (Guess what wet-nosed character masterminds the reunion with a paw shake and tail wag?)

Rest assured, there is sufficient amount of cuteness to go around in “Journey,” complete with dutiful canine humor around pooping, face licking, and the perpetual pursuit of food. But while the film engages with the sadness and despair of certain life crises head-on—an unexpected case of terminal illness is especially well-conceived in that regard—it strangely falls short of treating others with the empathy and seriousness they deserve. Written by Cameron, Maya Forbes , Cathryn Michon and Wallace Wolodarsky , the story is outright hostile to Gloria, a paper-thin character whose mourning and alcoholism receives a cruel one-dimensional treatment. A gold-digging ex-girlfriend of Trent suffers in the hands of a similar caricaturized vision. And yet, no one comes to a film like this, where the world is divided into absolute goods and evils, for nuance or subtlety. If you can look behind the flat visuals and prescriptive pleasantries of “Journey,” you might just get on board with its compelling-enough tale of lost souls, found and lifted up by their forever-loyal pooches. On this earth and beyond.

Meet the dog thespians of 'A Dog's Journey,' a mutt method-acting masterclass

Spoiler alert! What follows reveals key plot points in "A Dog's Journey," though not the ending. You might want to see the movie before reading.

The pooch ensemble in "A Dog's Journey" (in theaters Friday) has serious acting chops.

These skills are required in the saga, a continuation of 2017's "A Dog's Purpose," which follows the spirit of Bailey as he's reincarnated into pup after pup (all voiced by Josh Gad ) before eventually passing to heaven.

The circle of life requires the full spectrum of canine emotion – from cuddly to consequential. Director Gail Mancuso, who has five dogs of her own, pulls Oscar-worthy performances from her canine thespians in a movie where there's a pooch in every scene.

For your consideration, we present the leading contenders:

Buddy brought the beautiful heartbreak early.

Boss dog Buddy (a Great Pyrenees/Bernese Mountain dog mix) was played by three lookalike dogs, but mainly Odin, the film's primary star. 

Odin was tasked with dying in the lap of Buddy's beloved owner Ethan (Dennis Quaid), which happens early in the film. It was already a Kleenex moment before Odin lifted his head for a final, soulful look into Quaid's eyes and faded. "That look was pure magic," Mancuso says. "That moment resonated with me, as I have experienced my own dog looking at me during our goodbye. It's a special bond."

Molly was more than adorable energy.

The energetic Molly, who steps in to support the movie's human heroine CJ when her mom moves her away, was played by two Beagliers (a beagle crossed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel). Lead dog Lemy showed parkour skills, bounding through backyard obstacles (down stairs, over a gate) to jump into young CJ's arms (played by Abby Ryder Fortson). "And then started licking my face all over," Fortson says.

But Lemy had to get tough later and "bite" the leg of the film's villain (Jake Manley). Dog trainer Bonnie Judd first taught Lemy to tug with a toy, then placed a pouch of meat in Manley's pant leg. "It's kind of like a pinata," Judd says. "The more they go at it, the more they get."

Parting is such sweet sorrow for Big Dog.

Big Dog, played by an African Boerboel named Phil, has a small role, portraying a chance meeting with his spiritual owner CJ, now an adult played by Kathryn Prescott, in a roadside store. Phil hit his marks, and gave a hearty paw-shake. But the soulful-eyed dog hit dramatic paydirt when he bid farewell forever to CJ.

"When he's saying goodbye as he's leaving, it's so sad that it made me cry," Prescott says.

Buddy and an adorable toddler make giddy magic.

Emma Volk was 2 when she shot her screen debut as Buddy's kid friend (and Ethan's granddaughter) in "A Dog's Journey." But her giggling chemistry with Odin's Buddy is magic, with dog and toddler clearly happy together in a way that goes beyond acting. "Emma just really loved the big brute, and it looks natural," Judd says.

Max's exit scene was tough even for the dog actor.

Rescue dog Max, CJ's adulthood dog, was played by four Biewer terriers. Belle, the character's primary actor, was so invested in her death scene, she had trouble letting Prescott's CJ tearfully sing to her.

"The first time, Belle really wanted to kiss her tears away, but after that she kept her head down and closed her eyes each time," Judd says. "It's a tough scene for any dog but Belle was still a super-hyper puppy. Yet she did exactly as I asked over and over again. On each cut, she would quickly kiss CJ and play."

A Dog’s Journey Review: Live, Die, Repeat… Like a Boss

There isn’t much to say about any of the adaptations of W. Bruce Cameron’s series of books about the trials and tribulations that canines have on the human spirit. You know what you are going to get when walking into your local Cineplex when you watch the thing; you are going to be manipulated with a heavy hand that will be spread thicker than Jiffy. Though, when it comes to movies about dogs (and those glorious 90 seconds in Mulholland Drive ), I’m only a man, and a weak one at that. By the time A Dog’s Journey ‘s credits began to roll, I had already overdosed on cuteness.

A Dog’s Journey is a sequel to the surprise mild hit, 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose , with Dennis Quaid reprising his role as Ethan Montgomery. Josh Gad is back and plays his Boss-Dog, which is the voice of Bailey (and the subsequent reincarnations), an older St. Bernard who loves his owner and his wife Hannah (Marg Helgenberger). Bailey now looks over their grandchild, CJ, like his little sister, a new addition to their clan. CJ’s mother, Gloria ( GLOW’s Betty Gilpin), the widow of Ethan and Hannah’s son, is struggling with life without him and doesn’t seem to appreciate that her in-laws have taken them in with open arms because that’s what family does.

The film was directed by Gail Mancuso ( Gilmore Girls, 30 Rock, Modern Family ), a notable Emmy-winning television director. Her film is the best in the series, including A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Way Home . That doesn’t mean the movie is setting the family film genre on fire; it doesn’t. Especially when you combine the shameless manipulation that’s more saccharine than Splenda, this film will be trampled on by the snobby mob social media mentality types (cough, Film Twitter, cough) that is spread like a disease. This film isn’t meant for them; it is intended for family audiences, parents to get their kids out of the heat with no pool insight and/or to relax then forget about the world for an hour or two. In short, not all entertainment has to be an art form.

The cuteness overload continues the same formula as the original; different reincarnations bring us several adorable dog breeds. Besides Beethoven’s love child Baily, you get a cute female Beagle named Molly, a slobbery Mastiff who is a   big ball of joy named Big Dog. Then there’s Max, an aggressive, ankle-biting Yorkshire Terrier who might have been Chris Harrison in another life. This all is a gluttony buffet of canine proportions.

The ace up its sleeve is Dennis Quaid, a self-assured star who can be put in most any supporting role. Josh Gad might not exhibit Bryce Dallas Howard’s childlike wonderment in Purpose , but his impeccable comic timing does serve the film well here. Kathryn Prescott does a fine job carrying the back end of the film as the adult CJ. While I usually love Betty Gilpin, I found her performance as an alcohol-soaked washout over the top here. However, Henry Lau wins the booby prize here as CJ’s best friend and potential love interest.

When it is all said and done , A Dog’s Journey ‘s “Live Die Repeat” narrative structure is just like the original but told with an approach that is not as ham-fisted as other chapters in the series. The film, if anything, is a pleasant way to spend 90 minutes with the family or yourself, but is only worth rental prices or if you can sneak in all your refreshments and a bag of your popcorn.

‘A Dog’s Journey’ Review: Good Boys (and Girls) on a Mission

The preponderance of viral dog videos proves that the animals are sufficiently attractive, intelligent and resourceful that they don’t need stories about their reincarnation to entertain and warm hearts. Nevertheless, we now have “A Dog’s Journey,” the sequel to “A Dog’s Purpose” (2017), all about a multiple-incarnation pooch on a mission to protect a human.

We begin with the always-welcome Dennis Quaid, as a farmer with a strong bond to the shaggy St. Bernard/Australian shepherd mix Bailey. As Bailey is put to sleep, Quaid’s character begs the dog to look after his granddaughter CJ.

Among the many challenges in CJ’s then-toddler life is Gloria, a single mom possessed of more hostility than the entirety of Elvis Costello’s 1970s output. Gloria becomes a drunk and the older CJ adopts Molly, a delightful beagle/Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix who is, yes, possessed by the spirit of Bailey. (Josh Gad provides the cloying dog voice-over regardless of the gender of any individual beast.)

Adult CJ moves to New York and becomes Maggie Rogers with stage fright, or something like that. There, the new incarnation Max, a Yorkshire terrier, “improves” CJ’s life by making her homeless.

Directed by Gail Mancuso, the movie is packed with cardboard characters who only exist to check off bad-things-happen plot points. Stick around long enough and irritation may turn into incredulity as “Journey,” with the enthusiasm of a pep squad turning cartwheels, flips an increasing number of morbidity-skirting twists. Could you have predicted, when Molly learned how to be a cancer sniffer, that Max would retain that talent and use it to diagnose a central character?

I suppose it’s a genuine achievement that a movie packed with as much delightful canine (and agreeable human) talent as this one should be so insufferable.

Rated PG for mature dog themes. Running time: 1 hour 48 minutes.

• I. Bailey Bailey, an elderly St. Bernard/Australian shepherd mix, lives happily with his owner Ethan (Quaid) and his wife Hannah (Helgenberger), and their two year-old granddaughter Clarity June "CJ" (Emma Volk) and her mother Gloria (Giplin). Bailey, communicating with the audience via his thoughts, has a fondness for CJ. Gloria is shown to be an incompetent mother and have a hatred for dogs, as well as a dysfunctional relationship with her dead boyfriend, Henry's, parents (Hannah and Ethan), all leading her to eventually move out with CJ. Soon thereafter, Ethan discovers a lump in Bailey's stomach, and a veterinarian clinic deems he must be euthanized. Ethan holds Bailey lovingly and tells him to take care of CJ, before he is lethally injected. Bailey, now dead, is then seen running through a grassy field towards young CJ. II. Molly Bailey, who has been reincarnated as a female beagle named Molly, lives at an animal shelter. He sees a young boy named Trent (Ian Chen) and his family adopt his brother, Rocky. He also sees a young girl with him, who he recognizes is CJ, now nine years-old (Abby Ryder Forston). Bailey, remembering his promise to Ethan, runs outside to her. CJ, now living in an apartment with Gloria, takes Molly home with her and hides her from her mother. Gloria eventually sees Molly and reprimands CJ for getting a dog behind her back, but CJ persuades her mother to let her keep the dog given how neglected she feels. Over time, CJ and Molly grow increasingly close, along with Trent and Rocky. CJ, now a teenager (Prescott), reveals to Trent that she wants to drop out of high school and move to New York with her father's insurance settlement to pursue a career in music. While CJ is busy, Hannah and Ethan visit Gloria's home with a box of Henry's old belongings, wanting to see CJ. However, Gloria, still angry over their discord, closes the door on them, but not before Molly takes a liking to Ethan, and he recognizes her as Bailey and reminds him of his request to protect CJ. CJ befriends a bad boy named Shane, who Molly tries to protect her from. Shane invites her to a party, which gets busted by police for underage drinking; CJ is then sentenced to community service at a facility that teaches dogs how to diagnose cancer with their sense of smell, and Molly learns how to do this. Shane is revealed to be abusive towards CJ, and Gloria's nonchalant response and revelation that she has spent Henry's insurance settlement provokes her to leave with Molly. While driving, she discovers Shane is following her, and, in trying to avoid him, gets in an accident that kills Molly. Molly is then shown running through the same grassy field that Bailey was when he died. III. Big Dog Bailey, again reincarnated, this time as a mastiff named Big Dog, lives with his new owner, Joe, and is a guard dog at his gas station. Although he enjoys his new life, he misses CJ. One day, CJ, now a young adult, visits the convenience store, and Big Dog recognizes and engages with her. After she leaves, Big Dog lives the rest of his life missing Molly, and eventually dies. He is then shown running through the grassy field again. IV. Max Bailey, once again reincarnated, this time as a Yorkshire terrier named Max, is up for adoption during a public showing. He bites every person who shows interest in adopting him, until he sees CJ and chases her all the way to her apartment complex. CJ is reluctant to keep Max, but she learns that if Max isn't adopted by the next day, he will be sent to a pound. CJ, living with her boyfriend and working as a dog walker while building her music career on the side, adopts Max, who befriends her boyfriend's dog. Max eventually discovers that Trent, now a young adult (Lau), has moved into their apartment complex with his girlfriend (he also realizes that Rocky has since died). Max, sensing that CJ and Trent have feelings for each other, destroys CJ's relationship with her boyfriend, causing them to break up and for her to move out of his apartment and in with Trent. Soon after, Max remembers what he learned as Molly and informs CJ that he smells cancer on Trent. Max is revealed to be right, and Trent begins chemotherapy. His girlfriend eventually leaves him, leaving CJ as his primary caretaker. Eventually, Trent's doctor calls him and informs him that he is cancer-free, and CJ is visited by Gloria after not having seen her in years. She has warmed up to dogs and gives CJ some of the contents that were in Henry's box that Hannah and Ethan brought to her house during Molly's life, which are revealed to be letters that Henry wrote to Gloria while she was pregnant with CJ. These notes inspire CJ to write more songs and perform them in front of an audience, thus finally kicking off her musical career. CJ and Trent, now financially stable, travel with Max to Hannah and Ethan's farm, where they reunite for the first time since Gloria left during Bailey's life. Ethan realizes that Max is Bailey, as was Molly, and informs CJ that Bailey kept his promise and protected her. CJ realizes that Bailey has also brought her and Trent together and saved Trent's life, leading her to finally understand that Bailey, Molly, Big Dog, and Max are all the same dog. CJ and Trent embrace their love for each other, and eventually marry and have a child. Gloria also patches up her relationship with CJ, Hannah and Ethan, and Ethan dies with Max at his side. The movie ends with CJ praising Max, and all four lives Bailey has lived are seen running through the grassy field again, this time towards Ethan, and they run away into the grassy field of Heaven, departing this life as old friends.

Typische familiefilm met een vleugje drama en vooral erg veel sentiment met al die pratende honden. Op zich wel een leuk concept met honden die reïncarneren. Uiteraard gebaseerd op héél veel toevalligheden, maar met de flow best een leuke film om samen met de kinderen te bekijken. Al bij al blijft alles luchtig. Hier en daar wat humor met de voice over voor de honden. Teleurstellend is de film allerminst, althans toch niet voor het genre. De eerste zag ik nog niet, maar zal zo te zien binnen dezelfde verwachtingen liggen. Tempo zat goed. Film net ook niet te lang. Ideaal om tussendoor eens mee te pikken. Vooral fijn voor hondenliefhebbers.

Typical family film with a touch of drama and above all a lot of sentiment with all those talking dogs. In itself a nice concept with dogs that reincarnate. Of course based on a lot of coincidences, but with the flow quite a fun film to watch with the kids.

All in all, everything remains airy. Some humor here and there with the voice over for the dogs. The film is by no means disappointing, at least not for the genre. I haven't seen the first one yet, but it looks like it will be within the same expectations.

Pace was good. Just don't film too long. Ideal for a snack in between. Especially nice for dog lovers.

Een aardige familiefilm om met je gezin te kijken, maar als filmliefhebber kijk ik er toch anders tegenaan. Een pratende hond kan een aardige en grappige invalshoek zijn, maar dat principe voelt na 20 minuten al uitgemolken. De film heeft een hoog Hallmark-gehalte waardoor er geen diepgang in het drama komt en de geloofwaardigheid niet uit de verf komt. Al met al kan het niet eens in de schaduw van Hachi (2009) staan. *2,5

A nice family film to watch with your family, but as a film lover I look at it differently.

A talking dog can be a nice and funny angle, but that principle already feels milked out after 20 minutes. The film has a high Hallmark content, which means that there is no depth in the drama and the credibility is not emphasized. All in all, it can't even be in the shadow of Hachi (2009) . *2.5

Op zich nog wel een origineel concept, maar ik krijg altijd de kriebels van die Hallmark-zoetsappigheid en visuele gladheid. Toch wel verbaasd over de goede kritiek op deze film.

Still an original concept in itself, but I always get the creeps from that Hallmark gooeyness and visual smoothness. Still surprised at the good reviews for this movie.

The latest entry in this unlikely franchise about an endlessly reincarnating dog is as treacly as it is exhausting.

On paper, A Dog’s Journey should be a lighthearted comedy. Another movie where we hear the inner-thoughts of an adorable house-pet? Sounds simple enough. But be warned: like it’s predecessor – 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose – this installment in the story of Bailey the “boss dog” isn’t afraid to tread into truly dark territory. I daresay this film is a wolf in sheep’s clothing – the screenplay (credited to four different writers) touches on everything from absentee parenting to existential dread to alcoholism and addiction. The dog doesn’t just die; the dog dies four separate times.

Then again, that’s the perverse power at the core of this unlikely franchise. After all, protagonist Bailey is a happy-go-lucky canine gifted ( cursed? ) with endless reincarnation. When we meet him at the start of Journey , he’s living large on the farm of his old owner Ethan (now played by Dennis Quaid , in his second ridiculous turn this month).

But there’s trouble in the pack: Ethan’s daughter-in-law Gloria ( Betty Gilpin ) is growing resentful of the antiquated rural lifestyle and threatens to leave with Ethan’s granddaughter CJ. It’s during these opening moments that A Dog’s Journey serves up its most delightful and absurd sequence, involving a horse, a dog, and baby CJ. Alas, things quickly snap back to the tear-jerking norm, as Gloria hits the road and Ethan gives Bailey a mission: find and protect the young CJ.

Even with a relatively merciful runtime of a hundred minutes, A Dog’s Journey still manages to wear out its welcome before the credits roll.

From here, the narrative spurts-and-starts, occasionally flashing forward years at a time. Still, Journey is a marked improvement over its predecessor, a far more focused outing in the burgeoning dog-thinks-out-loud movie (it should be noted that last year’s A Dog’s Way Home is related in name alone). Veteran television director Gail Mancuso takes the reigns behind the camera, decreasing the reliance on feeble slapstick gags and disorienting shots from Bailey’s point-of-view.

Josh Gad returns to voice Bailey’s inner thoughts, and he sounds a bit more present and engaged this time around. Quaid, on the other hand, totally phones-in his scenes, which tend to boil down to him making funny faces at his pet. Because Bailey doesn’t have a ton of agency over the story, a grown-up version of CJ ( Kathryn Prescott ) takes center stage. Prescott’s fine, mildly-sympathetic as the script throws a slew of clumsy curveballs her way.

Journey is also the Hollywood debut of South Korean superstar Henry Lau , who plays the grown-up version of CJ’s best friend (and potential love interest), Trent. It’s nice to see Asian representation in a major Hollywood release; on the other hand, the characterization of his parents as “strict and academically rigorous” plays into offensive stereotypes (along with being completely unnecessary).

Even with a relatively merciful runtime of a hundred minutes, A Dog’s Journey still manages to wear out its welcome before the credits roll. To be honest, I’m not sure what else there is to say about this lazily written, almost-competent movie. There’s not much to recommend here, and it’s kind of a bummer.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

Conan o’brien defends norm macdonald’s “brilliant” o.j. simpson jokes on ‘snl’ (even though they got norm fired from nbc), conan o’brien jokingly shades kelly clarkson for taking over his former ‘late night’ studio: “you make me sick”, conan o’brien will return to ‘the tonight show’ 14 years after being fired by nbc in messy exit.

In each of the four episodes of Conan O’Brien Must Go , Conan visits a fan that he and his co-hosts have talked to on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend . The idea is that if the fan tells Conan to come visit whatever corner of the world they’re in, Conan will go to that country, surprise the fan, and try to get involved in their lives. In the first season, Conan and his film crew travel to Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland.

CONAN O’BRIEN MUST GO : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A snowy mountain range. A narrator with a Schwarzenegger-esque accent says, “Earth. A cradle for unimaginable beauty and staggering wonder.” After some more praise, the narrator says, “at times, you must defile it. Meet the defiler.” Cut to a shot of Conan O’Brien holding a rubber chicken.

The Gist: In the first episode of Conan O’Brien Must Go , Conan goes to Bergen, Norway in order to surprise a fan named Yarla. After giving Yarla one of the biggest shocks of his life, Conan surveys the fan’s apartment, which seems to be rife with stale cereal and bread and sprouting potatoes. He only has one spoon in his silverware drawer. Yarla is part of a hip-hop group in Bergen, and Conan goes with him to a recording studio, meets the rest of the group, and lays down vocals on one of their tracks — stuff about looking at fjords. He promises that he’ll get the track played on the radio using his “connections,” of which he has none.

Conan also ventures to places inside and outside of Bergen. He sits with a group of people in a knitting group, then goes to a local tourist attraction that replicates a Viking village. He dons a wig and flowing beard to be “Conan the Red” and can’t seem to keep his tights up as he wields his sword and other Viking-like activities. Because his luggage hasn’t made it to Bergen yet, Conan goes to a local store and dons a ridiculous outfit and finds someone on the street who has no problem telling him how silly he looks.

He then talks to a couples therapist about the Norwegian dating tradition of “sex, then coffee,” but just does things to make her say she’d never have either with him if they were trying to date.

Conan then goes to Lofoten to meet another fan — “That’s right, I have two fans in Norway,” he says. Kai is a fish farmer, and he takes Conan out on his boat with his coworker Gaardsemen (writing it how it’s pronounced), who drives him nuts. He rents a family to see him off as he gets on the boat.

The late night legend then goes to Oslo, where he “helps” get one of the vans the production is using get out of the snow, makes his attempt to get Yarla’s song on the radio, then joins Yarla’s group at a club to sing the song live.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Conan O’Brien Must Go is not all that different than the Conan Without Borders specials that ran on TBS during the 2010-21 run of Conan .

Our Take: One of the highlights of Conan O’Brien’s promotion tour for Conan O’Brien Must Go was his appearance on Hot Ones , which went viral and reminded everyone what made Conan so funny during his near-thirty-year late night run: He loves to be silly and absurd, and most of all, he commits to the bit. That’s exactly what we saw during the first episode of Conan O’Brien Must Go , and we couldn’t stop laughing watching him do it.

Conan really does appreciate his fans, and the idea of visiting those fans as an entry point to doing a travelogue-type show is a good way to not only incorporate his increasingly-popular podcast into the mix, but also show just what kind of impact Conan has had for over three decades. The fact that he has fans in different countries speaks to how widely watched clips of him on YouTube and other social media have been, never mind the fact that his various talk shows have likely been shown in those countries for some time, even if it’s on some obscure cable channel.

But the first episode also shows just why Conan’s brand of comedy is getting a new life via Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend , this new show, and things like the Hot Ones appearance. After over 30 years in the spotlight, Conan doesn’t have an ego and he still has no problem looking completely silly. This is a man who’s now past 60, keep in mind, and he almost invites scenes like the man on the street who tells him that he’s tool old to wear the denim jacket he’s got on, or the discomfort of the bicycle-helmet-wearing man who allows Conan to lick his cheek.

That sort of self-deprecating, absurdist shtick is what has carried Conan for his entire career and three decades on, it still seems less like an act and more like the way Conan generally lives his life. It’s why it still comes off as genuine and really, really funny, whether you’ve been a fan of Conan since the ’90s or just became a fan in recent years.

Sex and Skin: None, and we think if there was any it would be really, really awkward, anyway.

Parting Shot: We see a video that Kai sent the producers months after Conan’s visit; at a pub after Conan’s boat trip, he encouraged the shy fan to talk to a woman who was there. Well, there’s a lot of good news attached to that, which means that Conan is a matchmaking mensch on top of everything else.

Sleeper Star: Director Mike Sweeney got a lot of great shots of Norway’s beauty, including using a drone that Conan repeatedly referred to “get our money’s worth.” One shot has the drone fly from about 200 feet away from Conan’s waterfront hotel straight into the window of his room. Most Pilot-y Line: The drone bit was the only piece of repeated shtick that fell a little flat, though how Conan got around Oslo’s restriction on photographic drones still made us smile.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Conan O’Brien Must Go has a lot of the elements that have made Conan into the comedy icon that he is (though he’ll only say that in self-deprecating jest). It’s a fun watch, and we hope that Max gives him more than the four episodes in the first season.
