Coorg

Credits: Jean JonesOne of the highest peaks in the Kodagu region, Tadiandamol has been a favourite not only amongst the trekkers but also with nature lovers, bird watchers and photo enthusiasts. The mountains have withstood the testimony of time and have inspired many since time immemorial. The erstwhile rulers of the Kodagu region have drawn serious inspiration from the mighty mountain. Trails of their legacy have been left behind at the Nalknad Palace which is close to 200-year old now. Tadiandamol has a rich diversity in its flora and fauna harmoniously co-existing amidst the dense forests and grasslands of the Western ghats.Tadiandamol Peak is the third-highest point in the region of Karnataka offering a magnificent view of the valley after crossing the meadows, water bodies, Shola forest and lush green vegetation. This peak stands at a height of 5,735 feet above sea level and is a favourite spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The mountain has stood testimony to the time and has witnessed several incidents both natural and man-made. Though scaling one of the tallest mountains in Karnataka is not the only adventure but it offers a great view of the surroundings and is one of the famous places to visit in Coorg.Trekking along Tadiandamol teaches one to be valiant and patient while one observes the bounty of mother nature. As one starts from the base village of Kakkabe, the snaking trails are at times broad and of concrete and at times just muddy and unpaved. The excitement begins when the trail gets a little narrower with the sight of dense vegetation, coffee, pepper and other spice plantations. You will be able to witness and enjoy the sight of colourful birds and butterflies and hear them. Trek Routes to Tadiandamol Peak The highest peak in Kodagu offers a fascinating trek to nature lovers. At an elevation of 5740 ft, it takes you through verdant greens of Shola forest, valleys and rivers. The starting point of the trek is at Nalaknad Palace, where large vehicles like buses and tempo travelers can be parked free of cost. There is a motorable road until the viewpoint which is another 2km ahead. Only small vehicles can access this motorable road. The trek to the peak starts from the Forest entry point, where one needs to buy tickets for the trek. The next major point is the big boulder where trekkers usually take a short break to witness a charming view of the surroundings. Beyond the big boulders are the grasslands leading to the silent forest. The pinnacle of the trek is the brilliant forest replete with flora and fauna of varied species. This is a moderate level trek which is 6km one way and takes close to 2-3 hours each side. The trails are broad and chances of getting lost are less.History of Tadiandamol PeakThe third highest mountain peak in Karnataka is extremely popular amongst the tourists. It is adorned with lush Shola forest throughout the valley. The Nalaknad Palace built-in 1792 in the periphery of the mountain has historical relevance. It was used as a site to seek refuge by different rulers during the times of war amongst the neighboring states. For the warrior clans also referred to as the Kodavas the highest peak in Coorg has been a source of inspiration. The stoic warriors were led by the mighty mountain to showcase their valour and strength which has been recorded in the pages of Indian history.

Kumara Parvatha Hill

Credits: Karthick SivaWhen it comes to trekking in South India, Kumara Parvatha also known as the Pushpagiri Hills is a must include in the bucket list of diehard trekkers. It is the 6th highest peak in Karnataka which offers one of the most enthralling trails in India at the backdrop of the Western Ghats. The Kumara Parvatha hill stretches for a whopping 13 Km and stands at an elevation of 4000 feet above the sea level. Kumara Parvatha is a group of three peaks namely- Shesha Parvatha, Siddha Parvatha and Kumara Parvatha each of which has its relevance to Hindu mythology. Kumara Parvatha is located in the Subramanya village of Sullia Taluk in South Karnataka and is the choicest destination for trekkers and nature lovers. The trekking trail runs dense through the Shola forest which is home to breath-taking flora and fauna under the canopy of clear blue sky. At some places, the trail is quite strenuous with volcanic rocks, gushing streams and rocky crevices that pose a serious challenge to adrenaline junkies. But nevertheless, the panoramic view of the Western Ghats at the distance makes it a rewarding journey for tourists who are ready to go the extra mile for seeing the wonders of nature from close proximity. Kumara Parvatha trek is also popular among the tourists who wish to visit the place as a distinguished pilgrim site of South India. Some of the religious places of interest in and around Kumara Parvatha are Kukke Subramanya Temple, Sringeri Mutt and Biladwara Cave that have significant religious connotations.Apart from that, there are scenic spots en route Kumara Parvatha where you can halt for overnight camping or rest for a while and sink into the overwhelming serenity of the vast expanse of Madikeri. The Malli Waterfalls, Abbimatta Waterfalls and Pushpagiri Forest Reserve are some of the popular natural attractions that make your rigorous trek all worth it.Trek Routes to Kumara ParvathaThere are two routes accessed by trekkers of Kumara Parvatha depending on their level of fitness and spirit of adventure. One route is from Kukke Subramanya temple which is a moderately difficult climb up to the Shesha Parvatha via Kallu Mandapa. From Shesha Parvatha there are ascends and descends through boulders and grasslands up to the summit. This is a longer route and in between, you will need to stay overnight at the Bhatt's House before starting for the rest of your journey on day 2.A comparatively longer route is from Beedhalli in Somwarpet. This route is slightly challenging even for experienced trekkers but the view you witness along your trek is worth your exhaustion and time. In this route, you will trek along dense Shola forest where you may come across the wild animals and birds and feast your eyes on the beautiful panorama at a distance. Trekkers usually take the Somwarpet route to climb up to the summit of the Kumara Parvath and the Kukke Subramanya route to descend.History of Kumara Parvatha There are a number of folklores that go round this pristine religious and scenic destination of Karnataka and each of them ushers immense curiosity among the believers to undertake an arduous journey up to the summit. According to the popular faith, Lord Kumaraswamy (Subramanya) killed demons like Padmasura and Tarakasura and was crowned as the king atop the Kumara Parvatha. The Lord washed his lethal weapon in the nearby river and hence the name Dharma Teertha. Indra, the king of the gods being pleased by the valour of Kumaraswamy asked for his hand in marriage with his daughter Devasena. The marriage between Lord Kumaraswamy and Devasena took place on the bank of Kumaradhara.Another story depicts Vasuki, the divine serpent was once threatened by Garuda (mount of Lord Vishnu/Venkateshwara). In order to save himself from the clutches of Garuda, Vasuki performed rigorous worship in the caves of Kukke Subramanya temple. Lord Shiva being pleased with his follower's devotion sent his son Karthikeyan (Murugan) to protect Vasuki from Garuda. It is believed that Karthikeyan visited Kumara Parvatha where Vasuki was worshipping and blessed him assuring his protection from all evils.

Madikeri Fort

Madikeri Fort has been a popular tourist attraction to witness the lives, rise and fall of several glorious rulers and dynasty. It was also rebuilt by Tipusultan in granite and named the site as Jaffarabad and renamed the fort as Meraca Fort. In 1790 Dodda Vira Rajendra added to the architectural beauty of the Fort and then again by the Britishers in 1834. St. Mark’s Church built in 1859 is housed inside the Fort and has a museum built inhouse. The Architecture of Madikeri FortThe colossal Fort built against the backdrop of verdant mountains and an open sky reminisces one of an era bygone. The Fort, constructed in granite has been built in European style with elaborate pillars and checkered floor patterns. The two life-size statues of elephants at the entrance must have stod testimony to several rivalry and wars.St. Mark’s Church, in glass stained Gothic style replaced the old Vidarbha temple inside the fort also under the British rule. A grand clock tower was strategically placed to the exuberance of the fort in 1933. A sculpture of tortoise, with the name of King Vijayendra, engraved on it sits adorned upon to welcome the history aficionados. The grand architecture of the fort is not only the pride of the Kodagu region but has also attracted visitors from several parts of the world. The secret labyrinth of alleys and passes inside the fort gives way to mysterious stories associated with them which too must have seen gory and secret stories hidden within the walls.

A visit to Kushalnagar

When it comes to the two major towns in the region, one cannot help but notice – ‘ Madikeri,’ and ‘ Kushalnagar.’ Though the region of ‘Kushalnagar,’ is comparatively much smaller than that of Madikeri, it has so much to offer. Tourists could make their way to the town of ‘Kushalnagar,’ after about a six-hour-long travel.

If you’re travelling by road, be sure to encounter a good amount of traffic on the Mysuru highway. It could just be one of the major setbacks for your initial journey.

Namdroling Monastery

Namdroling Monastery

The ‘Namdroling Monastery,’ also commonly referred to as the ‘Golden Temple,’ is a Buddhist structure in the midst of this beautiful hill. Located just about six kilometres, away from ‘Kushalnagar,’ the monastery has got be on your Coorg itinerary for 2 days list.

Tourists find themselves making their way to the second largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet. Flooded with about seven thousand monks, this place is a one of a kind environment in the region.

Just when you think, there really could not be anything better than the monastery itself, wait for your second day to pan out.

Nisargadhama

Nisargadhama

Located about three kilometres away from ‘Kushalnagar,’ the region of ‘ Nisargadhama,’ consists of extensive forest lands. The forest resort is filled with some of the most beautiful settings, one can find off the state highway.

It would be best for tourists to make their way up the resort, towards the latter half of the day. This is one of the most rewarding trips for your Coorg itinerary for 2 days.

Best Time to visit Coorg

Now that you’ve got your Coorg itinerary for 2 days, all planned out. Well, the obvious next question would be, ‘When’s the best time to visit Coorg?’

Our recommendation would be for tourists to plan their vacation, during the month of ‘September to March.’ Though Coorg really is a year-round destination, the weather during these months, remain the best all year. One of the downsides, on the other hand, is that these months also make for the peak tourist season of the year.

This, in turn, means, higher rates and more crowds. So if you don’t mind both of the above, a Coorg itinerary for 2 days could just mean the world to you.

Ideal Duration of Visit

Though most tourists plan for a one day trip to the hills, we would not recommend or advise the above. A one day vacation could just be one of the most hectic travel plans of your life. If you’re looking for a relaxed and laid back holiday experience, a Coorg itinerary for 2 days, is the least you could do. The region has so much in store for you, it would be best for you not to rush things and make the most of your getaway.

Nowadays it serves as the office of Madikeri Deputy Commissioner. The fort is unique in the way that it houses a temple, an Anglican church, a prison, and a museum inside its walls. The church has been converted into a museum and offers visitors varied kinds of antiques related to Coorg.

Coorg is so beautiful! I had no idea that India had coffee-growing regions, but I’m not surprised just due to how large the country is. I would love to visit a homestay on a coffee plantation and take part in all of the activities. As a coffee lover, I would love to learn more about how the drink is made and it would be very cool to taste the specific local varieties!

Yess, Glad you like it!

Been to Coorg already a couple times and I’d love to visit again! It has such a charm. Kaveri Nisargdhama looks like my kinda place, but I did miss it last time. I went of the trek on Tadiandamol and I loved that. Need to plan a visit again.

nice post it is good and useful piece of information.

I live in Banaglore and had been planning to visit Coorg for so long. The Abbey waterfall looks nice. I will surely visit Coorg after the lockdown ends.

What a fantastic place with so much to do! Love that it has such a diverse variety from nature to forts and of course food. Abbey Waterfall looks wonderful. Are you allowed to swim there? I would have loved the flower show and all the coffee!

I always associated India with tea drinking. Maybe it has something to do with all the movies situated in India starring Brits and tea 🙂 Sadly, I do not drink coffee myself, but I would visit the region for the waterfalls and trekking options!

What a comprehensive guide of Coorg, thank you so much for this detailed info. You have activated my travel bug now. I would love to see the Abbey waterfalls. And Rajațs Tomb seems and interesting historic place to explore. But I would have a problem getting around, because me and a scooter – mno, we are not good friends. Any other options?

Namdroling Monastery was the best experience for me here. So much peace inspite of it being crowded most of the time. Loved the food in the restaurant nearby. i Loved the Madikere Fort too, very different from the other forts. I love shopping for spices here, such variety and strong flavors too.

I really appreciate that you made such a detailed itinerary! It is such a good mix of nature an man-made structers, something for any taste I guess. The Abbey waterfall and the river island look so nice and peaceful, I would love to get the chance to visit them!

Coorg looks really lovely with beautiful nature. I’d love to visit the temples and monasteries there. It’s interesting to know that most of the homestay in Coorg has coffee plantation. I’ve never seen one in real life before so I think I’ll be thrilled to visit one.

I so want to visit the Flower Festival at Madikeri! It looks so cool and the Octopus looked really neat! I would like to visit the Abbey Water fall and the Golden Temple too, and the tank at the Talacauvery almost looks like a swimming pool!

great share many of my friends are from Coorg and because of that i have visited many places. i would love to visit the rest of the places thank you for sharing

- Except popular tourist places, finding a restaurant/toilet might still be tricky if you are on the road full day in Coorg. Plan well.

- Avoid visiting between June and August due to heavy rains and possible landslide risks. September to December is best, Coorg being hill station remains cool even in March/April, but all waterfalls will be dry.

A 2-Day Trip To Coorg – Unconventional Attractions

Anyone from Bengaluru, we think of Kodagu/Coorg at the first instinct if someone says "Let's plan for a weekend trip.."

It is obvious because Coorg is one of the most popular destination near Bengaluru known for its natural beauty & cool weather. It poses wide variety of options for all ages to trip here. Starting from water falls for playing to peaks (or hills) for trekking, temples for praying to view points for relaxing and rivers for rafting (adventure lovers).. It has everything to offer for everyone..!

I had been to Coorg earlier and its conventional to visit places like Raja seat, Abbey falls, Dubare elephant camp, Kushalnagar and Nisargadhama that are close by Madikeri taluk of Kodagu district. This time, as an unconventional trip we planned to explore the Somwarpet taluk of this district in mid of July.

Being monsoon, many suggested its not the right time to visit as it will be raining most of the time there. We being bachelors (boys alone) traveling, we didn't mind drenching in rain and visiting places and have an adventure packed in this visit. Based on that we planned to follow the below itinerary

Planned to start on Friday night from Bengaluru and cover the below

Day 1: Mallalli Falls, Mandalpatti (Mugilpete), Raja seat

Day 2: Bhagamandala, Talacauvery and Barapole river rafting

Early in the morning after a rainy night

Shop near Mallalli falls

Found a small lodge/dormitory for fresh up after having a bed coffee in cold morning from a road side chai-wala . We had to pack up ourselves with sufficient fuel for a enthusiastic journey and hence had a local food in a small hotel and started towards Mallalli falls

By the time we reached Mallalli falls, it stated to rain and we had to take shelter at the available shop near the parking before we proceeded to walk down the route to view the gorgeous falls

Once, the rain slowed down we started to march down to view the rustic water falls

Heavy rain and adventurous down trek to reach the view point of the falls consumed most of our day 1 and had to reshuffle our visiting places which we did it during the lunch. Took some inputs form the local people there in the hotel. They suggested to skip visiting Mandalpatti (Mulgilpete) as that day being too foggy (or misty) and people cannot find the one who is in front of them also. This place is known for its classic views from the hill top (mainly visited for photography as it poses lot of photogenic localities)

As we were yet to find a room for overnight stay, we decided to move towards Madikeri and visit Raja Seat (we have lot of options to stay near this place and can get rooms easily unless it is long weekend)

This place is always crowded and bachelors can always cool their eyes and mind by moving around the entire place once slowly and gazing the beauties

Raja's Seat

View point - Can't view on that day due to fog

Somehow could capture the view from Raja's seat

Had a cool ice cream in that romantic weather and covered the entire place slowly and by then few of my friends went and confirmed the room for our stay.

Then, we planned to visit Omkareshwara temple which is nearby to Raja's Seat

After the temple visit we went for dinner and ended our first day in Coorg.

We got ready and had a tea and biscuit (best combination and the routine breakfast during our college days) before we moved towards Bhagamandala

We visited the Bhagandeshwara temple after clicking few snaps and sprinkling the holy water @ the Triveni Sangama

Tasted all the items available (in the name of breaking the fast) in the hotel which is situated right diagonal to the temple. Its was light on pockets, tasty on the tongue and heavy on stomach

Tala Kaveri Temple

Temples at Talacauvery

Due to heavy rain at Talacauvery, we could not capture the starting point of Cauvery river.

Then we started towards last adventure of the weekend, Barapole white water river rafting

We had to contact people many times (had their numbers luckily) to reach the rafting place and found it bit difficult to locate it without contacting them, as google maps were not that extensively used by us to reach any unknown places then.

Finished our lunch on the way and reached the place for rafting finally by evening 4 pm.

Training session

Photo of Kodagu White Water Rafting, Theralu - Birunanai Road, T. Shettigeri, Karnataka, India by Nithin S P

"Due to heavy rain in last 48 hours, the water level has increased and is difficult to have 5 rapids which we generally make you to experience" one of the instructor explained while we were equipping ourselves for a ride

Is it considered safe? one of us questioned.

Even if you don't know swimming due to presence of life jackets which can float the human who is around 150 kilos and 2 trained instructors who accompany you, it is all safe.. one of the instructor assured us.

So, we finally agreed for lesser price since it includes only 2 rapids during that session and started for rafting. Here it is known for white water rafting, due to heavy rains and new water, water seemed to be brown in colour during our visit

On the way back, we passed through the soothing tea estates that called us with open arms to halt our vehicle and pick up our cameras to capture some mesmerizing photos.

After this we relaxed back in the TT till the driver stopped for dinner on the way at a dabha. Then we returned back to our normal lives by early in the morning @ Bengaluru after a wonderful weekend in Coorg

How to reach

We hired a Tempo Traveler for this journey and its worth the penny. Covered around 1100 km's for the round trip. We went to Coorg via Mysore and returned in the same route dropping one of our friends at Mysore

Even though we have a large number of buses for traveling, it is suggested we hire our own vehicle so that we can cover more places or go at a leisurely pace.

Travel expenses include TT fare, driver bata, toll charges, parking charges. In addition, accommodation charges for night halt, fresh up in a hotel/dormitory. Food expenses depends on the food we eat, where we eat and how much we eat. Rafting expenses costed less due to reduction of rapids in our session, else it would cost around 1200 to 1500 per person.

Interested people can contact me for contacts for Rafting or can google it out and many contacts are available online.

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
