Bugaboo Fox 3 review: Still the Rolls-Royce of pushchairs?

  • Catherine Hufton

bugaboo travel pram

The Bugaboo Fox 3 is a comfortable, modern pushchair offering advanced ergonomics that make it feel more lightweight than previous models

  • Light carrycot
  • Aerated mattress in seat
  • Easy-to-use four-point harness
  • Lightweight feel and easy steering
  • Limited space in shopping basket
  • All-terrain wheels make the pushchair bulky when folding down

The iconic Bugaboo Fox has long been regarded as the Rolls-Royce of the pushchair world, and its latest update promises the same modern design in a more lightweight form. I’d used the original Bugaboo Fox 1 for more than a year with my first child, so I was well aware about what was good and not so good with regards to its predecessor. As such, I was interested to see how the new and improved Fox 3 fared in comparison.

I tested the pushchair when my son was eight months old, using it scenarios from shopping trips, car journeys, and woodland walks. It’s immediately clear that the design team at Bugaboo has spent time looking at its previous models, upgrading many of its ergonomic features. The new model now includes a high-performance aerated mattress, improved quick-click harness and an ergonomic padded seat with extra backrest support.

While the all-terrain wheels still make the Fox 3 quite a chunky pram that can be difficult to ferry around, it’s super light in use with great suspension and a sleek modern design that any parent would be proud to push.

Bugaboo Fox 3 review: Price and competition

The Bugaboo Fox 3 sits in the top tier of premium pushchairs and travel systems, making it a serious investment at between £1,045 and £1,115. It’s in good company with other premium yet eye-wateringly expensive pushchairs including the UPPAbaby Vista V2 , egg2 and iCandy Peach 7 .

While these models remain some of the most popular and sought-after prams, there are more affordable contenders that are also worth considering. The Nuna Triv , for instance, is one of my favourites and can be bought as part of a bundle with a carrycot and car seat for under £1,000, while the Nuna Mixx Next has all-terrain wheels and is priced below £600.

If your budget won’t stretch to these top-end options, the Joie Chrome DLX is a good solid option, as is the KinderKraft XMoov 3-in-1 Travel System . Both pushchairs cost just over £300.

The Bugaboo Fox 3’s sleek, contemporary design and premium fabrics are hard to beat; but the new iCandy Peach 7 is perhaps its closest contender.

Bugaboo Fox 3 Review: Design & Key Features

bugaboo travel pram

The carrycot is super-lightweight, too, with a breathable panel that provides optimal ventilation and an aerated mattress. At 90cm long, it should accommodate most babies until they’re six months old, when you can then swap to the main ergonomic seat. The seat features a new and improved quick-click harness (It’s one of the easiest I’ve ever tested), soft-touch water-repellent fabrics and an extendable sun canopy.

The metal frame is self-standing so folds down compactly and can also be collapsed with the carrycot or main seat attached. It also has a few different configurations, so baby can be sat forward facing or towards you.

Bugaboo Fox 3 Review: Performance

bugaboo travel pram

The pushchair is noticeably lightweight to push and is pleasurable to use on a day-to-day basis – whether that’s on the pavement or in a park. When it comes to folding it down and putting it in the car, however, things become a bit trickier as a result of its size. While the Fox 3 is designed with a one-piece fold, I found that I still had to separate the stroller seat to fit it into the boot of my car. Swapping from the carrycot to the seat is also quite time-consuming.

Suffice to say, this isn’t a pram for those looking for a super-compact option that they’ll be putting up and down multiple times throughout the day. But if your main requirement is a buggy for use on long walks on a mixture of terrains, it’s just about faultless.

That is, apart from the mesh under-seat basket at the base. While adequate, it isn’t as big as I’d like. It will easily fit a bag, jacket and baby carrier, but not much else. I did struggle to squeeze in larger bags of shopping. In comparison, the Nuna Triv is a smaller pram but has a deeper basket.

Bugaboo Fox 3 Review: Verdict

There’s no denying that the Fox 3 is a stylish, lightweight pram that feels great to manoeuvre around, its sleek design making you feel proud to do so. Its high price tag means it’s best purchased before the birth of your baby so you can utilise both the accompanying carrycot and stroller seat and really get your money’s worth from it. You should also really think about how you’ll be using your pram on a day-to-day basis before purchasing – while lightweight, the Fox 3 definitely isn’t a micro city pram. There are less expensive alternatives, if that’s what you’re looking for.

However, for walks outside, shopping trips and the like, this is a premium-quality, thoughtfully designed pushchair that will take you from those new-born days to toddlerhood with ease.

A refined but fully-featured all-terrain pushchair. It marries sleek aesthetics with robust engineering to tackle varied terrain.

The flexible seating options ensure it can serve families from newborn to preschooler.

While the Fox 5 sits at the high end of the price spectrum, the quality materials and versatile design help justify the investment. For parents who want a stroller that can confidently handle city streets to country trails, it's hard to beat the Fox 5.

What comes in the Bugaboo Fox 5 travel system bundle?

The Bugaboo Fox 5 can be purchased as a convenient travel system bundle that includes:

  • Fox 5 chassis and wheels
  • Bassinet with mattress and lining
  • Reversible toddler seat
  • Underseat basket
  • Turtle Air by Nuna car seat
  • Car seat adaptors
@marjolenethi My new all-terrain stroller from Bugaboo is so easy to use! I love that it comes with the bassinet and seat (perfect to last long with baby) 🥰 Ready to roll 💨 #bugaboo #bugaboofox5 #strollers #strollershopping #beststroller2023 ♬ Pacifica (with drums) - slow + reverb - Caleb Bryant

This bundled option provides everything you need to use the Fox 5 from newborn through toddlerhood, allowing easy transitions from car seat to pushchair.

The bassinet and toddler seat share the same seat frame, letting you switch between the two as your child grows. And the included car seat and adaptors create a complete travel system.

Design and Engineering

The Fox 5 retains the classic aesthetics Bugaboo is known for, with a sleek minimalist look crafted from high-quality durable materials. The chassis is made from aluminium with a bio-based coating to reduce environmental impact.

Engineers redesigned the Fox 5 chassis to improve manoeuvrability and stability. The new curved chassis shape, relocated pivot point, and wider wheel base optimize the center of gravity for easier steering.

Larger rear wheels and advanced suspension provide a smoother ride across uneven terrain. And the one-handed fold mechanism allows swift folding without removing the seat unit.

Seating Options

The Bugaboo Fox 5 offers flexible seating options as your little one grows. The bassinet is suitable from birth up to 9kg, providing a flat, firm mattress for safe sleep. The reversible toddler seat can be used from 6 months up to 22kg.

The seat can be positioned parent-facing or world-facing and features an adjustable calf rest and extendable footrest. The shoulder straps are simple to adjust in height. And the harness buckle can be released with one hand.

The toddler seat also extends up and down by 10cm to accommodate growth spurts. This provides longevity not always found in stroller seats.

Shows the diferent colours of the Bugaboo Fox 5

All-Terrain Performance and Maneuverability

With all-wheel suspension and large puncture-proof wheels, the Fox 5 is built to tackle varied terrain. The front wheels offer a 65% increase in surface area over the Fox 3 for stability.

The wheels absorb shocks and smooth out bumps in the pavement. Testers found the Fox 5 offered a very stable, smooth ride whether on city streets or more rugged park pathways.

The stroller is relatively nimble and compact for an all-terrain design. The wheels allow tight turns and easy steering with one hand. Though not the most compact everyday pushchair, its manoeuvrability belies its size.

The Bugaboo Fox 5 has an aluminum frame with a bio-based coating designed to reduce environmental impact. Engineers redesigned the chassis from the Fox 3 model, with a new curved shape and optimised pivot point that improves maneuverability. The wider wheel base also enhances stability for easier steering. Despite the robustness for all-terrain use, the frame retains a sleek, minimalist aesthetic signature of Bugaboo.

Is The Bugaboo Fox 5 Easy to Fold?

One of the standout upgrades with the Bugaboo Fox 5 is the easy one-handed folding mechanism. To fold the Fox 5, simply use one hand to lift up on the handlebar until the front wheels tuck in. This allows you to swiftly collapse the pushchair without needing to remove the seat first. The fold is smooth easy and intuitive, making storing or transporting the Fox 5 much simpler, especially compared to previous Bugaboo models. Once folded, the Fox 5 is compact enough for most car boots while still feeling sturdy and durable. Unfolding is just as easy - simply lift the handlebar again to extend the wheels and chassis.

Additional Handy Features for Parents

Beyond the seating and drivability, the Fox 5 offers thoughtful touches to enhance convenience:

  • A generous storage basket with extendable flaps for ample room
  • Simple one-handed adjustments from handlebar height to seat recline
  • A two-wheel mode for pulling the stroller backwards over sand or snow
  • Customisation colours and accessories like a sibling wheeled board

Additions like the adjustable handlebar, expandable basket, and one-handed fold indicate Bugaboo listened to parent feedback. Key Features for Comfort and Convenience

From the comfortable carrycot to details like the extendable sun canopy, the Fox 5 is designed for parental convenience.

The carrycot provides a safe, flat sleep space for newborns and has an extra-large UPF 50+ canopy to protect from sun exposure. It also includes a flip-down ventilation window to provide airflow.

The toddler seat is suitable once babies are around 6 months old. It can be positioned parent or world-facing and has an adjustable calf rest and extendable footrest to accommodate growth.

The seat can also recline in one smooth motion to allow your little one to nap on the go. The harness buckle releases with one hand for quick adjustments.

Thoughtful touches like the expandable basket with over 10kg capacity and accessories like the ride-on board for an older sibling make the Bugaboo Fox 5 a versatile, customisable pram.

With intuitive maneuverability and adjustments designed for convenience, the Fox 5 aims to make life easier for active parents needing an adaptable, durable pram. Test driving it is the best way to experience the engineering first-hand before making your shortlist.

How Does the Fox 5 Stack Up Against Competitors?

The Bugaboo Fox 5 positions itself as a premium all-terrain pushchair with an appropriately high price tag. But testers found it compares favorably against similar offerings from top brands.

The sleek style and intuitive handling help justify the £1300. The durable, high-quality build also means it could serve families across multiple children, enhancing value and longevity.

For parents seeking robust engineering that can withstand parks and trails without sacrificing nimble navigation, the Fox 5 deserves a top spot on the shortlist.

The Fox 5 redesigns the chassis for better maneuverability and stability. Larger rear wheels add advanced suspension for an even smoother ride across rough terrain. Thoughtful upgrades like the one-handed fold mechanism and expandable basket also boost convenience for parents. Bugaboo Ant Stroller Review

Price $ 499

Echelon $ $ $ $

For years now, Bugaboo has been making the SUVs of the stroller world. The Cameleon (discontinued) and the Donkey , for example, are fancy, rugged and built to last; and in the Donkey’s case, it has the ability to grow with your family. I’ve been a loyal Bugaboo fan for 4 years, so I was very excited to finally write this Bugaboo Ant stroller review!

kids in bugaboo ant

In 2019, the brand branched out and launched its first-ever compact stroller. The Bugaboo Ant is basically the hatchback of strollers: it’s small, lightweight and mighty, seamlessly sneaking through all the tight spots. This shift is a daring one, considering how saturated the travel stroller market already is. We wanted to find out if it can compete with the well-established giants of the compact stroller world, such as the Babyzen Yoyo+ and the UPPABaby Minu .

Portability

The Bugaboo Ant has a smart portable design and an ultra-compact fold. Weighing in at 15.8 lbs, it’s the brand’s lightest, most compact design to date. It’s a bit heavier than the UPPAbaby Minu (14.8 lbs) and the Babyzen Yoyo (13 lbs), but slightly lighter than the Compact Colugo stroller (16 lbs).

Once folded, the Bugaboo Ant measures in at just 20.6 x 14.9 x 9.1”, which is small enough to squeeze into an overhead bin on an airplane. WOW. Living in a small Brooklyn apartment, I appreciate how I can seamlessly tuck it away in the back of my entryway closet.

folded bugaboo ant

I also love the pull-along trolley mode, which allows me to haul the folded Ant like a suitcase. It’s great for navigating airports (as the brand suggests on its website), but it’s also surprisingly convenient for everyday commutes. I’m able to lift it in and out of buses and roll it through crowded NYC subway stations with soooo much ease (and without breaking my back — yes, 15 lbs can really weigh on your spine in the long run…), all the while having a handle on my kids. I also periodically pull it to daycare to pick up my son (a 10-minute walk)… So much better than having to carry it on my shoulder (ouch!) or getting annoyed at everyone staring at me for pushing an empty stroller on the way to get him (what’s the big deal, people!?)!

Overall, you can tell Bugaboo built the Ant with the commuting, traveling parent in mind. I do wish that it came with a shoulder strap, for the sake of options — but I heard this is in the works for the 2020 version (yay!).

The Fold

Bugaboo’s folding mechanisms have never been the brand’s strongest suit — and it is no different with this model . Though the fold is compact and self standing (!), there’s a big learning curve to folding the Bugaboo Ant . It’s not that it’s difficult , or that it takes very long… but it takes 6 separate steps, which need to be done in order, fully, for the fold to actually work.

bugaboo ant stroller review: fold

Note: In order for the stroller to fold well, make sure the front wheels are facing out. This is true of the Babyzen’s fold too.

To summarize: the process is… a few steps too many, and folding the Bugaboo Ant with a toddler who’s always ready to take off is no easy feat. That said, now that I’ve gotten the hang of it, it’s a 20-second process max. Even after you’ve mastered it, though, you’ll undeniably need both your hands. (If that’s a dealbreaker for you, think about the UPPAbaby Minu or the Colugo.)

In short: the seat is where the Bugaboo Ant shines. I absolutely love it!

Get this: it’s reversible! This is a rare feature in the compact stroller department. Other than the Cybex Eezy S Twist (which also has a seat that rotates), virtually all travel strollers have fixed forward-facing seats. In this regard, it’s more like the Bugaboo Bee, but 4 pounds lighter and much more compact. See also: Favorite City Strollers

The rotating mechanism is not unlike the folding process: it has some of the same steps (see video above), and it takes some getting used to. But overall, Bugaboo executed this function beautifully; and though I do not have an infant anymore, I freaking love facing Leon (who’s two and a half) when we’re strolling, and it’s something I’ve missed with our other compact stroller. He’s so chatty and funny, and he makes me laugh — we have the best time when we get to interact on our walks.

bugaboo travel pram

The Ant’s seat stands out in other ways too: true to Bugaboo’s standards, it has an actual upright position that supports Leon when he needs or wants to sit up straight. This was a game changer for us. We previously used the Babyzen a lot for getting around town, and both my children got very frustrated with its default slight incline.

bugaboo ant stroller review: upright position

You have more reclining options when the seat’s in rear-facing mode. It lays back to a nearly flat position, which is great for naps.

bugaboo ant stroller review: facing inward

In the forward-facing position, however, the seat only has two recline angles: upright and slightly-less-upright. I learned this the hard way when Leon fell asleep facing outward.

bugaboo ant stroller review: recline

The seat can support babies from day one (in the flat incline, in rear-facing mode) — no additional accessory needed — up to 50 lbs. (You can also use it with a number of different car seats, see below.)

For reference, The weight limits are the same for the MINU (50 lbs), slightly less than the Colugo (55 lbs), and lower for the Babyzen (40 lbs).

But… the seat is narrow (not really surprising for a travel stroller). It definitely felt a little snug for my 32-pound, 2-year-old son. I’m not entirely sure it will fit him (comfortably) past his third birthday, but he seems comfy enough in there for now.

The Bugaboo Ant in 2020

The Bugaboo Ant is already due for a 2.0. In direct response to some consumer complaints,  Bugaboo announced a couple of structural changes underway for 2020.

As mentioned, the Ant will now come with a carry strap — a nice addition to let parents choose how they’ll tote it around. The stroller’s seat will also come with a footrest. (The brand claims the footrest will not affect the weight of the stroller.)

If you need an extra seat for your oldest child, you can attach the Bugaboo stroller board in the back — no adapter needed. This has been great for my 5 year old, who loves to ride along.

bugaboo ant stroller review: stroller board

Car seat compatibility

The Ant is compatible with a variety of the upscale “Euro” car seats: the Nuna Pipa Lite/LX, Cybex Aton 2/Q , Clek Liing, and Maxi Cosi infant car seats. You’ll need to purchase a car seat adapter separately. (Note that it is not compatible with the original Nuna Pipa.)

Bugaboo wheels are seriously one of my faves, and the Ant’s are no exception; they’re small but mighty. Integrated into the frame, they have suspension and provide great shock absorption — smooth ride guaranteed.

bugaboo ant stroller review: wheels

The Ant is a breeze to steer and to maneuver, even with just one hand. The push is similar to the Cameleon — it practically glides through streets — but it has a smaller footprint and is lighter, so it actually feels easier to push. I’ve made a point to go over potholes (Greenpoint, Brooklyn has many, MANY of them) at my usual speed, and I never got stuck, nor did I tip the stroller over — not only that, my son barely moved or bounced!

I was happily surprised about the underseat basket as well. It can hold up to 17.6 lbs and features two different compartments: a main one that can hold a diaper bag and a rear luggage basket for essentials you want to access easily — think food pouches, diapers, wipes, water bottles, maybe even some of your must-haves, like your purse.

bugaboo travel pram

Once I realized I could access the rear compartment (above) even when the stroller is folded (!!), I started to use it daily. That said, note that you cannot access the rear basket as easily if the seat is facing inward, especially if your babe is a tot — his feet and legs will be in the way.

Not much to say here: the Ant has an extendable UPF50+ canopy that covers your little one pretty well whether he is sitting straight or laying down.

bugaboo travel pram

The telescopic, adjustable handlebar also is a unique feature in the compact stroller world, setting the Bugaboo Ant apart from other travel prams. The handlebar, which you can use to pull the stroller like a suitcase when it’s folded, retracts and expands to fit small and tall parents alike. It actually has a surprisingly wide adjustment range. Plus, you can rotate the handlebar to adjust the angle. I personally loved this because I feel like I often strain my wrists, and I like changing it up to stay comfortable on longer strolls.

The Bugaboo Ant retails for $499. It seems like a lot, but it’s actually on par with, if not cheaper than, other luxury travel stroller options on the market — especially considering you do not “need” to buy a newborn kit to use it from birth.

The UPPAbaby Minu costs $399, but you have to spend an extra $129 for the newborn kit (so, around $530 total). The same goes for the Babyzen: the Yoyo 6+ (good from the age of 6 month and up) costs $499, and the newborn pack is $229 (so over $700 for a stroller that’s suitable for newborn). The Colugo stroller costs $295, and its newborn kit retails for an additional $95 ($390). In summary, the price is in line with other luxury travel strollers, though you’ll definitely find cheaper mainstream options in our Travel Stroller Guide .

Bugaboo Ant Stroller Review: Bottom Line

Bugaboo made waves in 2019 with the launch of its first-ever travel stroller. The promise? A smart and compact stroller for the parent on the move. I think the brand delivered. I wish the fold were more seamless, but it’s not a dealbreaker for me. In fact, I think the stroller is packed with other unique features that make it well worth the investment: it’s very compact and light, but has the wheels and maneuverability of a full-sized stroller; it has a unique suitcase-like pull that makes it super portable and easy to lug around; it has a reversible seat with a true upright position and is suitable from day 1 to 50 lbs (without having to purchase any additional accessories); and has decent storage. Yes, the seat is on the tighter side, but if portability and chatty walks are what you’re after, the Bugaboo Ant could be a great option for you.

8 Of The Most Compact Travel Prams To Take On A Plane

Whether you’re heading off on bub’s first road trip or your mini-me is a frequent flyer, a travel pram or stroller is a handy accessory that makes family holidays more comfortable for everyone.

Travel prams are lightweight strollers that fold down into compact units that are small enough to travel with. In fact, some are compact enough to take on planes as carry-on and fit in the overhead compartments.

Domestic carry-on luggage allowances

Carry-on restrictions vary between airline carriers in Australia. We’ve checked with the airlines and listed their carry-on weight and dimension allowances.

When checking if your pram meets the requirements of the carrier you’re flying with keep in mind that the stroller weight listed by the brand may not take into account any accessories like pram liners, sunshades, cup holders etc.

Size and weight restrictions for overhead luggage

We always recommend rechecking your pram’s total weight before you travel.

Read the comments and find out which travel prams other mums have taken on planes:

Can travel prams go on airplanes?

Yes, select travel prams are permitted onboard airplanes if they are compact and lightweight enough to meet the cabin baggage allowance.  Of course, always check with your airline before you travel as cabin allowances vary with fares.

What are the benefits of a travel pram?

There are so many benefits to having a travel pram with you on holiday, starting with being able to pop baby into the stroller the second you step off the plane. A compact stroller also makes it faster to get around with young kids and gives them a place to sleep while you’re on the go.

What features should I look for in a travel stroller?

Aside from a compact, lightweight design, look for reclining seats so that kids can rest, a sun-safe canopy, good ventilation and a storage basket for your snacks and shopping. Many travel strollers also come with storage bags and shoulder straps for easy carrying.

8 best travel prams to take on holiday – according to parents

By Rosalyn Wikeley

mother with kids and luggage looking at planes in airport

I remember with strange clarity, a family of four spilling onto a Corfu -bound flight with every toddler gadget going sprouting from their limbs, as if they were in a comedy sketch… though the parents weren’t finding it remotely funny. Having lugged all their items on board and held onto energetic sprogs with the only finger left hooked in the label of their stretched jumpers, the parents were then told that their pram was too large for the cabin and needed to go in the hold. The mother was on the brink of tears and a near tangible wave of sympathy for her swept the plane. As a travel writer, I have done my utmost to avoid the same fate, to smooth over the pain points of travelling with tinies in tow and to get savvy on all the gadgets worth the investment.

I soon realised that it all starts with the pram (buggy or stroller). Whether travelling by train, plane or car with a pocket-sized boot, the pram needs to fold like origami and perform like a zippy Mini Cooper. It’s hard for the brands to tick all the boxes: a petite, nifty thing in its element on Parisian pavements will struggle with Milanese cobblestone or anything remotely rural; some can be a challenge to fold one-handed (a prerequisite when travelling with the baby and toddler ensemble or as single parents); others can be the dream folders but not robust enough for the newborn phase. The thing to look out for is if the pram is IATA (International Air Transport Authority) compatible – if it’s compact enough to be classed as hand luggage on all major airlines.

Like anything with children, it’s such a personal thing – but to avoid being that sobbing, Corfu-bound parent who’s had it with the whole holiday palaver before even leaving home turf, here’s our expert opinion on the best travel prams.

Best travel pram for flying

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: A neat fold with a shoulder strap, one of the lightest travel prams yet also a great city stroller, stretches from newborn to 4 years.

Cons: The wheels aren’t good on bumps or cobbles, the newborn pack doesn’t feel very sturdy so many parents end up buying the more robust bassinet which can’t be folded down.

Weight: 6.1kg

Folded Dimensions: 44 x 18 x 52cm

‘Yoyo’ is the word airlines are really looking for when checking if your pram complies with cabin baggage regulations. It’s the secret password to a land of hassle-free air travel and (as most parents will have gleefully discovered), is narrow enough to scoot up the aisles of most trains. You’d be hard-pressed to walk down a street in London and Paris and not spot at least two Babyzen Yoyos, with their distinct curved frame and smooth hoods (all SPF 50). Only weighing 6.1kg, this city favourite is easily folded and unfolded using one hand, and can be thrown over your shoulder with a strap (airport security with children never looked so easy). While the newborn pack is ideal for being out and about, some parents choose to buy the more robust bassinet for more protection (which needs clicking off before the frame can be folded and would count as an extra item of luggage). The basket under the pram can fit a surprising number of toys and bottles (with easy access from the sides too), though most large baby bags would struggle to squash under the frame just above it. While this truly is the city staple, that comes into its own when rushing through airports and stations, the wheels are too rickety for anything beyond a flat pavement… Yoyos are notoriously bad on bumpy terrain, but that’s the price you pay for an acrobatic pram that makes travelling or scaling stairs a breeze. There is also a glitch when it comes to the footmuff preventing the pram from properly folding (you need to remove it, which is particularly annoying during winter months).

Best travel pram for basket space

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: Large basket, cushioned seat and ready for any of the Bugaboo extras; long warranty.

Cons: Not suitable for under 6 months, clackety plastic wheels.

Weight: 7.3kg

Folded Dimensions: 45 x 23 x 54cm

Noticeably more plush for tots, with a cushioned, cocoon-like seat that isn’t sore on the eyes, the Bugaboo Butterfly has been cleverly designed with a basket big enough for the baby bag or tote that other foldable prams never seem to have the space for. And, while already winning, having freed up a limb or two for parents navigating airports and stations with babies and toddlers, the Butterfly is also compatible with all the Bugaboo-branded accoutrements, such as the shade and mosquito covers and the footmuffs. While there is a strap to tip the chair back for queue snoozes or outdoor siestas while on the move, it’s very much tipped and not fully flat. This may not bother some parents though as the pram is designed for six months plus and doesn’t click onto any bassinet (so one to avoid if you’re travelling with an infant). Another common issue for travel prams is the clackety-clack plastic wheels that are no match for Europe’s cobbled streets and with seemingly limited suspension. Ultimately though, it’s an agile travel pram despite being foldable, that children up to four years old will easily nod off in while on the move.

The best compact travel pram

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: Robust yet easily folding flat without any fiddly levers; a smart-sized basket and spacious, cushioned seat that works for newborns through to 4-year-olds.

Cons: The style isn’t for everyone, but we’re scraping the barrel for cons here.

Weight: 6.6kg

Move over Babyzen Yoyo, Cybex’s new COYA could be the ultimate travel companion. This cabin baggage-compatible pram folds flat as a pancake with remarkable ease (one-handed) and somehow feels more sturdy than its main competitor. It also lies completely flat so can be used from birth – though the jury’s out on whether the harder bassinets are safer for travelling with newborns, as they feel more encased if anything bashes into the pram fabric – the newborn nest Cybex offers is a great solution as it keeps them cushioned in and not rolling about as you move. There’s an impressive mix of fabric shades and frame colours, some even patterned (should anyone wish to tie in their pram with luggage hues), and the zip at the back is ideal as a temporary spot for your passports , phone or a bottle/beaker. A particularly neat feature is the scoop of the pram basket underneath, ensuring no items fall out while weaving through crowds. Its wheels also feel less rickety than other travel prams, and the pulley strap at the back is straightforward (and crucially quiet) when your little one looks as though they’re about to nod off. There’s also the added bonus of being able to attach Cybex’s car seats to the pram if you’re travelling with one – a smooth way to transfer the baby without waking them up. The double metallic legs may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we’re struggling to find a negative point for this new travel pram which, so far, ticks all the right boxes.

The best travel pram for travelling solo

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: Pram can be collapsed using only one hand, folds up flat, has two seat-back options, and straps can be adjusted with just one pull.

Cons: Small storage compartment.

Weight: 6.3kg

Folded Dimensions: 47.5 x 15.5 x 52.5cm

This pram is a nifty little option for flights, especially if you're travelling without another adult. You can fold the pram down to be completely flat using just one hand. And it fits neatly in the boxes at airport security as well as in the overhead lockers on the plane – also handy if you’re going to be hopping in and out of taxis. It’s super lightweight – I’ve carried it in one hand, with baby in the other, through airports and even across beaches as my toddler trundles towards the water. The storage is great, with one big canopy shelf that will do you for a day out and about, as well as sneaking extra stuff on the plane (it doesn't count as a ‘bag’). Despite its streamlined design, it’s still very sturdy (other travel prams have been noticeably flimsy) and has two seat-back options for upright or snooze mode, as well as good coverage from the sun on the hood. The safety strap is also noteworthy – much better than my usual, fussier pram which has loops for the arm straps – the design makes it wiggle-proof, which is also helpful if you’re running to catch a transfer (which I also have, unfortunately) had experience with. The best affordable travel pram

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: Incredibly good value for money; an adjustable handle for parent height and a newborn nest feature that doubles up as a toddler footrest.

Cons: Heavier than other travel prams and maybe not as chic.

Weight: 7.8kg

Folded Dimensions: 45 x 24 x 54cm

Taller parents rejoice! Those whose feet routinely catch the bottom of the lower prams can finally walk without a hunch with the Ergo Baby Metro + Classic Stroller’s adjustable handle. These perks do mean it’s that little bit heavier than competitor prams, with a sturdier frame, but it’s worth that smidgen of extra weight for not needing to carry an extra attachable bassinet (the footrest for toddlers can be folded into a newborn ‘nest’ - in a similar style to Cybex’ new COYA. It’s also kinder on wallets and still easy on the eye. Toddlers can easily snooze in the well-cushioned seat, and not flinch when being thrown around on bumpy terrain – though another key pro of the Ergo is its rubber wheels, avoiding that clackety plastic that only really works on flat pavement or a smooth airport floor. Despite feeling heavier, it folds down really tightly (and easily) when on the move.

The best lightweight travel pram

bugaboo travel pram

Pros : An impressive 10-year warranty; incredibly light and easy to fold; a smoother ride with rubber wheels.

Cons: 6 months plus, with no newborn function.

Weight: 6kg

Folded Dimensions: 45 x 21.5 x 53.5cm

The Joolz AER+ is a much smoother ride than the others on the list, with a squishy handle and foam-rubber wheels that prevent the baby from bouncing around inside (and save your and any fellow walkers’ ears from the racket of plastic-wheeled travel prams). This impressive model only requires a one-handed click to fold like a dream and flicks out from this compact position as if a wizard just muttered a spell. It’s also one of the lightest travel prams going at just 6kg (lighter than the mighty Babyzen Yoyo), which is a great accolade considering it’s constructed from recycled bottles; a nod to the notion that sustainability doesn’t chip away at quality or function. One feature that’s particularly useful for hot countries is the hood, which folds down to cover tots’ faces in fierce sunshine, without having to pull out an extra shade cover or clip on a muslin cloth, shifting it as the sun moves (we’ve all been there). Its fold when going through airport security or once onboard is smooth-as-butter – the sort that can be done with seasoned traveller flair. The fully flat recline is useful for snoozing, though it’s worth noting that the pram is for 6 months + and without any newborn function or additions.

The best travel pram and car seat in one

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: Converts from pram to car seat, can also be strapped into a plane seat, suitable from birth, adjustable handlebar.

Cons: Rear-facing only, likely to only last for up to 12 months / 13kg.

Weight: 7.5kg

Folded dimensions: 60 x 44 x 66cm

The pint-sized Doona is a great option for tiny tots weighing up to 13kgs as it converts from a pram to a car seat in seconds, perfect for airport transfers and taxi rides abroad. If you’re not paying for an extra plane seat for a child under two, it’s small enough to fit in the overhead compartment of most planes. However, if you do decide to put your little one in their own seat, the Doona in the car seat position is TUV and FAA aircraft-approved and can be strapped to the plane seat – a more comfortable and safe way for little ones to travel. As it's rear-facing it will probably only last you up to a year at the most, but I personally found it well worth it. Jessica Rach, Global Content Manager

The best travel pram for the first year

bugaboo travel pram

Pros: Affordable; newborn onwards; adaptable to Chicco’s carrycot and car seat (so particularly great for travelling in the first year of a baby’s life).

Cons: Plastic wheels aren’t good for negotiating curbs or anything other than a smooth surface.

Weight: 6.9kg

Folded Dimensions: 46.5 x 25 x 56cm

A lightweight travel pram from Chicco that really grows with your child, the Goody+ has a glorious ‘one-touch’ fold, where it collapses into a tote-sized square. From newborn to 4 years, its seat feels unusually wide and spacious (despite its compact collapsed size) and can be cleverly attached with Chicco’s soft carrycots and car seats – so consider this before buying all that baby clobber too. If you’re planning to travel lots with a baby in the first year of its life, this could be the 3-in-one combination that will see you through, and without costing a fortune. It’s easier to ‘build’ than most prams – no manic 2am YouTube How-To videos with an early flight time – and looks chic, despite its more reasonable price point. An immediately obvious down side of this nimble and incredibly popular travel pram is its wheels and general manoeuvrability over anything that isn’t a polished station floor. You’d have serious trouble negotiating the historic mule paths of a Greek village with this pram. This is also something to note if your baby doesn’t sleep well with too much jiggling about.

Micralite ProFold Stroller

Best foldable cabin size buggy

Micralite micralite profold stroller, how we tested our buggies.

Our lightweight stroller shortlist has been compiled with the help of our panel of WH mum testers, in-house experts and those that have been well-reviewed online. To put the buggies through their paces, we looked at size, weight, foldability, steering and comfort for both mum and baby.

We also chose not to list them in order of preference, as each stroller we reviewed has been selected for stand-out features that we believe make it a great contender. The best pushchair for your family ultimately comes down to personal choice. So, keep scrolling for our pick of the best lightweight strollers on the market and see which one works for you.

What is a lightweight buggy?

Most standard buggies weigh 15kg, while the super-light strollers on our list range from 5.4kg to 7.6kg in weight. But anything that's light enough to comfortably carry in one hand is considered a lightweight buggy, according to Ella Henshaw from baby and toddler retail service Buggy Baby .

'Lightweight strollers differ from traditional buggies, as an everyday model is usually more bulky, heavier and has bigger wheels and accessories like snack trays, shopping bags and cup holders,' says Henshaw.

Lightweight buggy benefits

While more substantial pushchairs tend to be sturdier in construction and often come with extra storage and seat adjustable options, lightweight buggies have a number of benefits for busy parents.

Simple set up

If you're ever struggled with an awkward pram and a wriggly toddler by a waiting taxi in the rain, you will know how important buggy set-up speed can be. Easy assembly (known as one-hand fold) wins!

Constantly tripping over monster pushchairs in the hallway? Switching to a buggy that can be easily folded and stowed will free up space at home and on the move.

Getting about town

As the name suggests, lightweight strollers tend to be much lighter and easier to manoeuvre about town. 'They help parents attend to a child and manage a buggy at the same time, such as having to carry both upstairs,' say Henshaw.

Frequent flyer, bus hopper or day tripper? 'Having a stroller that folds down small enough to fit in the boot of a car or overhead compartment will save hours of grappling,' says Henshaw.

Travel systems include everything you could possibly need for getting about with your little one in tow, but they often come at a price. If you're on a budget, a lightweight buggy is often a cost-effective option for new parents.

Help choosing a lightweight buggy

For help choosing your ideal lightweight buggy we've narrowed down our faves below. But it's also worth keeping the following tips in mind:

  • Shop for trusted brands : All pushchairs must comply with the British Standard for safety testing, so you know your baby will be in safe hands. But if you're not sure, 'look for a trusted, high-quality brand', says Henshaw.
  • Age is important : How old is your little one? 'Consider the age of the child and whether a bassinet is needed, plus recline options or parent-facing swivel' suggests Henshaw, as not all strollers on our list have these functions.
  • Consider the terrain : Are you planning to go off-road with your pushchair? 'Look at the wheel size, as most lightweight buggies are better suited to pavements.'
  • Think about your stroller's main function : If you need a buggy for a holiday, that would be different than for use on a daily basis.
  • The benefits of a bundle : Most lightweight buggies don't come with a rain cover as standard, but you can often buy accessories as add-ons or part of a package.
  • Shop for cabin-approved : Consider if you'll be taking your stroller on a plane. If so, look for 'cabin-approved' buggies so that you have your pram as soon as you step off the plane.
  • Storage : Snack access is surprisingly important for some little people and most smaller buggies have limited pockets. If your mini-me has a big appetite opt for a buggy with space to store snacks on the move!

The best lightweight strollers to shop now

To help you choose the right pram for your family, we've narrowed down the best lightweight buggies for parents on the move.

Mamas & Papas Airo Stroller Heather

This own-brand stroller from Mamas & Papas replaced our bulky bassinet when my son Woody turned 18 months old, and I'm not sure how we ever coped without it. Although it's not technically the lightest buggy on our list, the Airo feels really lightweight and super-easy to wheel about town. But most importantly, the entire thing folds up to marginally bigger than my laptop bag.

We've put it through its paces over city streets and rainy parks, facing milk spillages and impromptu naps along the way, and I honestly can't fault it. I particularly like how light it feels but without being flimsy, and the fabric hood is high quality.

Extras : The extendable hood is handy for bad weather and nap times, plus the plush harness and front bumper makes the whole thing feel really secure. You can also purchase a complete bundle , which includes a lie-flat baby seat, newborn pack, changing bag, car seat, foot muff and cup holder.

Key specifications

If you're looking for a travel-friendly stroller that's small enough to take on-board your flight in the run up to holiday season, we might just have the solution. Our mama tester Rosie recently tried the Clic 2023 Edition Pushchair from Silver Cross out for size and was impressed with the results.

'It looks fantastic', says Rosie, Mum to 4-year-old Daisy. 'And has a water-resistant hood which withstood an accidental spill of a full bottle of water on it without making any marks or soaking through!'

The latest model features an improved one-handed seat recline and super compact fold that will keep your little ones cosy and safe from birth right up to four years old. Extras : Comes with one-hand recline, adjustable calf support, a magnetic buckle plus a UPF50+ hood and sun visor.

Thanks to the toddler board and funky colour range, the Joolz travel buggy is a real conversation starter in the mum club and it's just been updated in time for the holiday season.

The Joolz Aer + looks very similar to the original Aer, however, the new tweaks to the design make for a comfier experience for mum and bub. First off, there is a 15 per cent increase in the seat recline allowing baby to nap virtually flat - good news for tiny travellers. Next up, the sun canopy can be unzipped to offer extendable coverage.

Other updates include a slightly bigger shopping basket, easier-to-adjust shoulder straps and chic new seat fabrics. So, that's what's new. But what's stayed the same? In our tester's opinion, Joolz' travel buggy is sturdier than other compact prams and is one of few travel buggies to offer a buggy board , which if you’re a Two Under Two mum, is a must. Easy to attach, the Joolz Footboard (now £71.21) can be used as a seat or a place to stand. You can even fold down the buggy with it attached. And btw , the one-button fold is a breeze.

The other major point of difference between Joolz and other brands is their eco-credentials. The Joolz team used recycled plastic bottles in the seat fabric design and they plant a tree for each pushchair sold. Even the pram packaging can be recycled into an aeroplane for your kiddo. [ Disclaimer: This beat our exhausted brains, but it did kill an hour between bath and bed!]. We also love the brand's commitment to making products that last. So much so that each Aer + comes with a lifetime warranty if you register within 6 months.

The only bugbears we found when testing the Aer and Aer + - and we had to try really hard to find them - are the seat recline requires two hands (read: not that easy while clutching a coffee) and you need to keep one hand on the pushchair when a toddler is on the footboard. Should they use the handlebar as support to stand up then the whole pram can fly back.

Extras: This is where things can get expensive. The pushchair is from 6 months to 4 years. Should you want to use it from birth you’ll need to purchase the cot , which has a genius compact fold, or use car seat adapters . There is also the option to purchase a leg rest so toddler legs don’t dangle. Other add-ons include the bumper bar , mosquito net and a seriously snuggly footmuff .

British brand Silver Cross has been manufacturing baby products in North Yorkshire since 1877, and continue to make trusted prams, car seats and nursery furniture . The Clic is suitable from newborn to toddler and comes with plenty of parent-friendly features including easy folding.

'This stroller is so super light, our standard buggy now feels like a real workout to push!' says Sophie, Mum to 2-year-old Rita. 'When we take the train I can carry it up the stairs with my toddler strapped in and it's totally manageable on my own, which is game-changing,' she says. 'And most of all I really love the bright colour! Plus it's nice and slim so much easier navigating shops, and when we go to the pub or a restaurant we can have it right by the table.'

Extras : The buggy features a lie-flat seat which is great for nap times, plus you can squeeze up to 5kg of shopping in the under-seat compartment. You can also purchase the corresponding foot muff separately.

In a world of beige buggies, why blend in when you can stand out? If you've seen one of these vibrant strollers out in the wild, you'll no doubt wish you had one too. We've heard on the Mum grapevine that the Whoosh handles well and folds up pretty small, and online reviews have praised its foldability, weight, and overall comfort for little ones. But most of all we just love the funky fabric! So if colour is your thing, head over to Cosatto and check out the brand's great range of flamboyant strollers, car seats, high chairs and even dolly prams.

Extras : You can purchase extras including a corresponding rain cover or parasol as part of a bundle. You can also buy a (mismatched if you're feeling funky) foot muff separately on Amazon.

Another big brand in baby circles, a number of A-list parents have been spotted pushing a Bugaboo around town including Meghan Markle and Kim Kardashian. But while we can't argue that it's a popular buggy, is it worth the price tag?

'We live in a titchy apartment with two kids, and the Bugaboo has been a lifesaver!' says Lisa, mum to one-year-old Bo and three-year-old Ronnie. 'I particularly like the way it folds up neatly in the hallway,' she says. 'It's a great pushchair and handles well. But it really comes into its own with two little ones, as we added the wheeled board so I could push both of my kids around and it saved us from having to buy yet another buggy. So in that sense, it's worth the investment.'

Extras : If you'd prefer a more stable option for your new baby, you can also purchase a complete carrycot and seat pushchair for newborns, plus extras including a sun canopy and cup holder .

The brand loved by A-list celebs including Beyoncé, Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian, the Triv from Nuna Baby may not be the smallest or lightest stroller on our list, but it's definitely one of the most stylish. It's an ideal segue if you're looking for a compact model that still has all the benefits of a bigger pram.

'It’s really light and super easy to steer,' says Sandie, Mum to six-month-old Jasmine. 'And you can also lock the front wheels, which is handy for going over bumps. It's perfect for city life.' Sandie also loves the faux leather detailing. 'It feels like a premium pram, but folds up like a travel buggy,' she adds.

Extras : The Triv has a clever magnetic buckle that automatically locks baby securely into place. Another perk is the adaptable seat so your little one can face forwards or backwards. You can also purchase a 5-piece bundle which includes a carry cot, car seat and adaptor.

If you thought cabin-approved buggies were a ‘baby essential’ too far then take the Silver Cross Jet 3 for a spin - or flight.'Having a means to secure an overtired toddler when all you want to do is get through security and all they want to do is run wild is game changing,' says mum-of-two Amy.But why spend on the Jet 3 when Silver Cross has the Clic for £100+ less? Think of Jet 3 as the premium sibling of the Clic. It offers features modern mums will love such as a completely lie-flat seat, adjustable calf support, a fancy magnetic buckle and the option to pull it along like a suitcase when folded - which is super handy in airports.Unlike many other travel strollers that only offer a partial recline the Jet 3 allows your tiny human to lie horizontal - a must for many babies napping on the go.The only drawback was storage. ‘Although the shopping basket is roomy, I struggled to get larger items in there because of the middle bar but pushchair clips for my baby changing bag helped solve this issue,’ adds Amy. Extras: Jet 3 can transform into an agile travel system when used with compatible car seats - a winning design feature for those traveling with tiny humans - and you can use a foot muff on cold winter days making this an all-year round buggy, not just one for sun soaked hols in Greece.

If you spend any time at the school gates, chances are you'll have spotted the BabyZen about town. The go-to buggy for suburban parents, the French brand burst onto the baby scene in 2012 and has been a global success story ever since. Thanks to attention to detail (yes it fits into the overhead compartment on planes, folds up really small and still has good suspension), this compact stroller makes a great all-rounder for city life and transatlantic travel.

'We've had this buggy since the baby was born and it has been brilliant,' says Nadia, mum to two-year-old Roman. 'We've taken it on planes, trains and buses with no trouble, and it's still going strong after over two years of use.' The buggy is suitable from birth up to 22kg. 'Roman started as a tiny baby lying down and graduated to using it as a stroller, and it's always felt sturdy enough.'

Extras : The brand stocks all the extras you could think of including newborn bassinet, rain cover, leg rests and a wheeled board for toddlers, so it's super easy to adapt to the changing needs of your tot. You can also purchase a twin travel bundle, which includes two bassinets to transform your buggy into a double pushchair.

At 7 kg, the Micralite ProFold is the brand’s lightest and most compact stroller. But, it’s the fold-mechanism that really earns this cabin-approved stroller brownie points. ‘You truly are able to put this buggy up and down in one second,’ says our tester Edith, who trialed the pram while on holiday with her 6 month old daughter Amelie.

‘I found the simplicity of this buggy’s design really good for travelling as we didn’t need the bells and whistles that more expensive travel buggies have. Plus, the shopping basket is quite roomy for a travel buggy.'

Sounds good. But what about back at home? ‘I would use the Profold as a second, smaller buggy for occasional use. I found that the wheels struggled on rougher ground and I’d worry that they’d get worn down quickly but around the supermarket or the shops they were brilliant'.

Extras: The Micralite design team have already added a few cheeky extras: a reversible (and washable) seat liner, rain cover, a carry strap and a secure pouch on the hood. If you want more you can add a foot muff .

Ickle Bubba Globe Prime

Ickle Bubba Globe Prime

This good-value stroller from family-run UK brand Ickle Bubba has been designed with travel in mind. Thanks to an aluminium frame it's fairly lightweight, and when collapsed it's one of the smallest buggies on our list. It also has a little window in the hood so you can check-in with your precious cargo on the move. And according to our Mum tester plus multiple online reviews, this is one of the easiest strollers to dismantle.

'This buggy is really small,' says Alice, Mum to new baby Wilfred. 'We have an old Mini Cooper with a titchy boot and it fits in easily. It’ll be a handy to have for trips away due to it being compact and easy to fold.'

Extras : The brand provides a 4-year warranty for their travel systems and strollers should anything go wrong. You can also purchase corresponding extras including a buggy organiser and pram mitts separately.

Some-bunny to love! 28lb therapy rabbit called Alex the Great turns heads after it's wheeled through airport in a pram

  • Alex the Great is a therapy bunny at San José Mineta International Airport
  • He became a local 'celebrity' for his appearances at SF Giants baseball games

We've all seen our fair share of weird things at the airport - from crazy items being found in people's suitcases, to pet-owners taking their furry friends abroad.

However, travelers at San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), were shocked to see a giant rabbit being pushed around in a stroller yesterday evening.

Jemma Wilson took to Twitter , sharing a photo of the hilarious sight, and announced 'I am at the airport and there is a giant rabbit in a stroller, I repeat a giant rabbit in a stroller.'

The tweet has racked up over 80,000 views, with people loving the bunny on wheels - the pampered rabbit even had fans blowing cool air onto his face and was wearing a visor.

As the tweet gained more traction, it came to light that this wasn't just any rabbit, the animal was actually local celebrity known as 'Alex the Great'.

X users who had never heard of the rabbit before, wrote 'This can’t be real' and 'I need way more info. Like what airport. And where he's going. And does he get his own seat on the plane, sit on his owner's lap or go under the seat?'

Others immediately recognized the local treasure, writing 'it's @AThegreat100 and he's v famous in the Bay area and as the #1 @SFGiants fan' and 'That is Alex the Great, a local celebrity!'

Alex the Great is a 28-pound therapy rabbit at the  California  airport, who is a bit of an internet 'celebrity' in the San Francisco area.

The adorable bunny helps and comforts nervous flyers at the airport - he's part of the largest breed of domestic rabbit, known as Flemish Giant.

He's known for being 'docile' and 'patient' with travelers and is often seen throughout the airport, lounging on passengers laps.

Alex's owner, Kei Kato, told MailOnline that she and her fiancé Josh Row, love that he 'puts smiles on people's faces' and can make someone's day.

She said 'This is why we volunteer, you'd be amazed how many people really loved seeing him and even have some people start to cry because they were going through something and petting him makes them feel better.

'We are also creating awareness that rabbits are amazing and smart. We do let people know that they're not easy to be taken care of but if you take the time to love and train them, they can be amazing.'

As well as San Jose airport, Alex the Great also makes appearances at San Francisco Airport (SFO) as part of the 'Wag Brigade'.

In 2013 the Wag Brigade program was launched by SFO to bring trained dogs to the terminals to make passenger travel more enjoyable.

The San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) PROVIDED dogs certified through their Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Program to roam the terminals and help nervous flyers.

Later, Alex joined the team, as well as Lilou, a Juliana-breed pig - the animals wear vests that read 'Pet Me!' which identify them.

Before taking on his airport duties, Alex the Great had already stolen hearts of many at San Francisco Giants baseball games and Golden State Warriors basketball games, making him a 'legend' in the local area.

His owner takes him along to the sports events, where he often wears his very own team jersey.

The fluffy bunny has also appeared on the screen multiple times, stealing the show and bringing joy to people in the stadium who stop to give him a cuddle.

He rose to internet fame after one particular San Francisco Giants game, where his owner told ABC 7 that 'everybody was cheering for him' and 'people in the other stands were saying 'show us the bunny!''

Since then, he's become a much-loved internet celeb, getting spotted by followers at sports games and the airport.

He has over 18,000 followers on Instagram and his bio reads that he wants to 'spread joy to everyone' on his adventures.

The rabbit even has his own statue designed by a high school artist, which sits outside a restaurant in Cupertino, California.

It's sign reads 'This rabbit was inspired by Alex the Great, a real live comfort rabbit who has become the unofficial mascot of the SF Giants'.
