ARC Takes a Majority Stake in nuTravel

  • January 21, 2020

ARC is proud to announce that it has acquired a majority interest in nuTravel , a company that builds custom and integrated booking, loyalty management and e-commerce platforms for the global airline industry.

As travelers increasingly use a variety of platforms and providers to shop, buy and service their air travel, ARC seeks to create an environment of greater transparency, efficiency and collaboration across the global air travel community. By connecting the travel manager, the travel agency and the airline in a more transparent environment, ARC and its partners will create a robust, omnichannel ecosystem that connects today's disparate, channel-exclusive environments.

“ARC is on a fast track to help airlines and travel managers provide their travelers the streamlined, simple and consistent shopping experience they expect, regardless of their purchasing method,” said ARC’s President and CEO, Mike Premo. “nuTravel’s innovative technology and solutions are a perfect complement to bringing ARC’s omnichannel strategic vision to life.”

ARC is on a fast track to help airlines and travel managers provide their travelers the streamlined, simple and consistent shopping experience they expect, regardless of their purchasing method.

Mike Premo, President & CEO, ARC

Several of nuTravel’s capabilities align with ARC’s vision for the future of omnichannel retailing : corporate registration, traveler enrollment, travel policy application, data reporting and distribution, as well as direct integration with airlines’ CRM systems.

ARC’s long-term vision for omnichannel retailing is to enable travelers to buy anywhere and receive service anywhere. As air travel retailing becomes increasingly customized and complex, ARC is committed to providing travel agencies, travel management companies and travel managers with the tools they need to manage traveler data, fulfill duty of care and provide exceptional experiences for their travelers.

ARC’s vision for omnichannel retailing is to enable travelers to buy anywhere and receive service anywhere.

nuTravel Co-Founder, President and CEO Carmine Carpanzano commented, “nuTravel has been at the forefront of corporate online retailing for airlines since 2012. ARC’s investment in our company and partnership — coupled with the strength and talents of our team — will accelerate our research and development, product innovations and continued enhancement of our software. The nuTravel team is excited to partner with ARC to offer airlines flexible retailing solutions that support their distribution strategies and to help further ARC’s strategic goals.”

nuTravel will be an independent subsidiary of ARC, sustaining its focus on innovation and delivering excellence for airlines serving corporate travelers. The nuTravel board of directors will consist of two members from nuTravel’s management team, ARC’s COO Lauri Reishus and CIO Dickie Oliver, and Dave Hilfman, airline industry icon and former senior vice president of worldwide sales at United Airlines.

“I am very excited to be named to the board of such a pioneering technology company,” said Hilfman. “There is tremendous power in the combination of nuTravel’s leading technology platform with ARC’s settlement, data and emerging airline retailing solution suite. The robust technical capabilities of the nuTravel team, coupled with the diverse experience and expertise of the board, will help sustain the company’s vision of becoming a major technology player. I look forward to working with nuTravel as we begin another new decade of successes.”

On November 19, ARC announced that it had taken an equity position in Traxo, a company that helps corporate travel managers more effectively manage travelers’ direct bookings.

ARC's Chief Executive Officer, Mike Premo, shares his perspective on ARC's investment in blockchain developer Blockskye.

Why should business travelers have to make a tradeoff between status and service, depending on where they buy? What if they could have both?

Airline-Owned ARC Buys NuTravel to Connect Airlines With Travel Management Companies

Andrew Sheivachman, Skift

January 23rd, 2020 at 10:00 AM EST

Airlines are starting to realize that better communication with travel management companies can benefit both sides. ARC wants to play a major role in this period of transition.

For all the talk of digital distribution empowering business travelers, a surfeit of choice has created fresh problems for both airlines and travel agencies.

Complex back-of-the-house systems limit the communication between carriers and travel agencies at a time when flyers are encouraged to book directly for perks and access to ancillaries. Increased cooperation and transparency, it follows, will directly benefit both sides of the equation.

Airline-owned Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) has acquired a majority share in NuTravel , a technology company providing solutions to global airlines, in an effort help solve some of these knotty problems. It did not disclose the price of the deal or current customers served by NuTravel.

While airlines compete with agencies to capture bookings and avoid commission payments, there has been a realization that both sides need to work more closely together as online and mobile booking have matured.

“We’re not going to see [an airline] merger every year like we did for most of the 2000s,” said Mike Premo, CEO of ARC. “They’ve got to go out and compete for every single customer. They’re really very focused on customer experience… Seeing travelers choosing to book at the place of their choice has created challenges for our agency customers, corporations, and in some cases even challenges for airlines when the customer needs service and their agents are not in a position to fully serve them because they are not in possession of [the whole itinerary].”

The ability of NuTravel build build front-end technology for airlines that meets the rigorous requirements of the corporate travel ecosystem, said Premo, is the core of what led ARC to invest.

The Big Problem

An ongoing issue in corporate travel is caused by different systems essentially not talking to each other; if a traveler books directly with an airline, for instance, the traveler’s travel management company likely won’t be able to track the booking or ensure it fits inside an employer’s travel policy. It also affects corporate negotiated rates for airfares, because that traveler probably isn’t receiving the reduced airfare negotiated by her travel manager.

NuTravel focuses on bridging that gap between airline distribution and corporate travel agencies. The company began its life building online booking tools, helping to build Air Canada for Business among other portals for JetBlue and Westjet. In 2017, it sold its online booking tool business to Certify and pushed ahead with a new strategy working more closely with air carriers on front-end solutions.

As progress is made connecting carriers and agencies, solving for this mess has taken on a new importance. ARC also partners with Blockskye, a company using blockchain to build technology for airlines , and owns a chunk of Traxo, a data aggregation service for travel .

NuTravel will continue operating as normal with its 25 employees and plans to grow its workforce as it signs more deals with airlines to help connect their consumer-facing apps and booking sites with the back-end of corporate travel management companies.

“This is a strategic play that gives us access to all the airlines ARC does business with,” said Carmine Carpanzano, co-founder and CEO of NuTravel. “It gives us the warm handshake instead of doing it the normal way, through the door.”

A variety of carriers including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Air Canada own stakes in ARC, so creating new technology solutions for distribution has apparently become important for the wider world of aviation.

Whether these issues are solved any time soon is another matter entirely, as history has shown airline distribution tends to change at an extremely slow pace.

Lot across from Multnomah Falls will now charge up to $20 for a parking spot

V isitors hoping to snag a free parking spot across from Multnomah Falls will now have to pay up to $20 during the peak season. And visitors aren’t so happy about the news.

The lot is privately owned and operated by Sasquatch Shuttle , a provider of parking and transportation services in the Columbia River Gorge region. Co-owner Alan Dayley told KGW that the meter machine was installed last Tuesday and was up and running by Thursday. He said parking fees will range between $5 to $20 — all depending on the time and day.

“We came here to this parking lot last season and were monitoring it and helping with the traffic flow,” said Dayley. “We saw an opportunity to be able to utilize this as a premier parking area and be able to provide a less expensive option and more accessible option at the Bridal Veil.”

Sasquatch Shuttle also owns and operates a parking lot in Bridal Veil. Starting in May, visitors can pay $5 to park at their Bridal Veil lot to take a free shuttle directly to Multnomah Falls. Dayley told KGW that this new parking fee will help fund their free shuttle that will run roughly every 30 minutes.

"The free shuttle service between Bridal Veil and Multnomah Falls parking lots is a pivotal component of our transportation strategy," stated Kent Krumpschmidt, Sasquatch Shuttle co-owner in a press release Monday. "By offering this complimentary service, we aim to reduce traffic congestion along the scenic highway while providing visitors with seamless access to the breathtaking beauty of Multnomah Falls."

Dayley said they've been in talks about this new parking fee idea since the off-season of 2023. They shared that Multnomah Falls sees 2 to 3 million visitors yearly. And, of course, that means parking chaos during the peak season.

KGW’s Daisy Caballero asked Dayley how they came up with the price point. He shared that they looked at other rates across the nation for different parking areas.

"This is an opportunity that we find for folks to be able to come if they want across-the-street access,” said Dayley. “And we are really hoping that that price might be a deterrent for people to park here and to go find more affordable options because they are there."

When asked if a $20 parking day use pass was too expensive, Dayley was blunt.

“That's a good question — no. Otherwise we wouldn’t be charging that much," he said. "Right now and in the off-season, it’s $10 to park and $20 in the peak-season."

KGW spoke with several visitors who shared their thoughts on the parking fee charge. While some were open to the idea, most were not thrilled.

"If the shuttle service means that more people get to enjoy and experience, I think that that kind of is pretty fair. But the fact that it’s an all-day parking fee, it feels a little weird. It would be better if it were by hour," said Johnny Le, a visitor from Seattle.

“Yeah, I just think it should be free," said Bailey St. Aubin, a visitor from Utah. "There is so many things that we have to pay for in the world ... you gotta pay for everything to go anywhere."

"I see both sides of the coin, I guess, but it’s sad. I understand the reasons that it might curb congestion but I doubt it. I think this might be the norm," said Karen Duncan.

“$20 is too much to just avoid a congestion," said Atul Gutel, another visitor from Seattle. "I would disagree, $10 is reasonable. anything more than that is too much.”

As for the legality of the new parking fees, both the U.S. Forest Service and Multnomah County are reviewing it. But the owners don't believe it's against the law.

"We believe our payment machines don't require a permit," an attorney for Sasquatch Shuttle said.

Could Trump Go to Prison? If He Does, the Secret Service Goes, Too

Officials have had preliminary discussions about how to protect the former president in the unlikely event that he is jailed for contempt during the trial.

The U.S. Secret Service is in the business of protecting the president, whether he’s inside the Oval Office or visiting a foreign war zone.

But protecting a former president in prison? The prospect is unprecedented. That would be the challenge if Donald J. Trump — whom the agency is required by law to protect around the clock — is convicted at his criminal trial in Manhattan and sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president behind bars. Prosecutors had asked the judge in the case to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict is rendered.

(The judge, who held a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether Mr. Trump should be held in contempt for violating a gag order, is far more likely to issue a warning or impose a fine before taking the extreme step of jailing the 77-year-old former president. It was not immediately clear when he would issue his ruling.)

Last week, as a result of the prosecution’s request, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if the jury convicts him and the judge sentences him to prison rather than home confinement or probation — has yet to be addressed directly, according to some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials interviewed for this article.

That’s at least in part because if Mr. Trump is ultimately convicted, a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, is almost a certainty. That would most likely delay any sentence for months if not longer, said several of the people, who noted that a prison sentence was unlikely.

But the daunting challenge remains. And not just for Secret Service and prison officials, who would face the logistical nightmare of safely incarcerating Mr. Trump, who is also the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

“Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” said Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are obviously strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving wings or large sections of their facilities empty and available. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he said that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, said his department couldn’t speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

The trial in Manhattan, one of four criminal cases pending against Mr. Trump and possibly the only one that will go to a jury before the election, centers on accusations he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal involving a porn star. The former president is charged with 34 counts of felony falsifying business records. If convicted, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, could sentence him to punishments ranging from probation to four years in state prison, though for a first-time offender of Mr. Trump’s age, such a term would be extreme.

If Mr. Trump is convicted, but elected president again, he could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State.

Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less, colloquially known as “city time,” would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is currently serving his second five-month sentence for crimes related to his work for his former boss.)

Any sentence of more than a year, known as state time, would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The former president could also be sentenced to a term of probation, raising the bizarre possibility of the former commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

He would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.

Maggie Haberman contributed reporting.
