Review: Carrie Hope Fletcher - An Open Book (UK Tour)

Review by Daz Gale

It's fair to say Carrie Hope Fletcher has become one of the biggest names in musical theatre over the last few years. With many strings to her bow including vlogger and bestselling author, it's surprising to learn she hasn't gone on a concert tour before. Thankfully that wrong has been righted with the deeply personal and rather unique 'An Open Book'. Will the perhaps unconventional approach to this storytelling narrative work well on the stage or will it be lost in translation?

carrie hope fletcher an open book tour setlist

Carrie Hope Fletcher has proven herself to be reliably consistent performer with her turns in musicals including The Addams Family, Heathers, Les Miserables and even managing to bring something impressive to Cinderella . This last year has seen her take on some varied and unpredictable roles from a straight play in The Caucasian Chalk Circle to her (brilliant) panto debut in Sleeping Beauty . Ahead of a return to the West End in new comedy play The Crown Jewels , Carrie is bringing ‘An Open Book’ to venues up and down the country. I caught the show at the beautiful Birmingham Symphony Hall – and while each show is going to be unique in its own right, this was the tale of that particular evening.

The concept of ‘An Open Book’ sees Carrie tell stories from her life and career, even if they are hard to talk about or embarrassing. What makes each concert unique from the last is the audience get to dictate the stories told, and in turn, the setlist, through a vote. While there are some fixed points that will remain the same in every show, more than half of it is determined by the audience with Carrie checking the results live on a laptop. This close connection and interaction feels the perfect vehicle for Carrie who has always managed to give a personable approach to any role she plays.

Stories selected on this particular show included an icy story which led to a performance of ‘Monster’ from Frozen , an opportunity to tell an embarrassing story about her famous brother Tom before leading in to her favourite McFly song ‘Bubblewrap’ and a satisfying audience vote whose story led into Carrie revisiting ‘Pulled’ which she had previously performed in The Addams Family .

The unpredictability and versatility of the setlist led to an excitingly varied evening with Carrie hilariously revisiting her teenage angst years and her love for My Chemical Romance with a medley of songs from them and Fall Out Boy while of course there was more than a smattering of musical theatre songs though perhaps not the ones people were expecting.

carrie hope fletcher an open book tour setlist

Instead of taking audiences through favourite numbers Carrie had performed in shows, the choice of musical inclusions was more thought out and only sung for a reason. Carrie revisited her time in Les Miserables , not by putting Eponine and Fantine’s big numbers together but instead bringing ‘On My Own’ together with her personal favourite from the show ‘Stars’ as she announced she is hoping to play Javert next. Corn Nuts in the audience were delighted as Carrie recounted the day she found out a new song was being written for Veronica in Heathers as she closed act one with a rousing ‘I Say No’ complete with brilliant audience interaction. Also included were numbers from shows Carrie has not performed in (yet) with inclusions from Sister Act and a particular highlight in ‘I’d Rather Be Me’ from Mean Girls .

It is safe to say Carrie could sing pretty much anything as she proved time and time again throughout this concert. An incredibly gifted performer, her vocals were frequently outstanding, almost taking the roof off of Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. Her ability to act through song brings even more depth to the numbers, while always retaining her humanity and authenticity, never losing the connection both with the source material and the audience.

The response to Carrie’s nine books (so far) has shown what a fantastic storyteller she is, and here she managed to bring that to a new medium in this meticulously crafted show. Weaving a narrative through song as she told her own story is hard enough – given this narrative never wavered even with the unpredictability of a changing setlist is even more impressive and showed how much care and consideration had been taken when creating this show. In the hands of others, a concept such as this may have failed considerably but with Carrie, it soared.

In the fittingly titled ‘An Open Book’, Carrie Hope Fletcher comes across warm and genuine, unashamedly wearing her heart on her sleeve. To anyone who has been lucky enough to speak to Carrie off-stage, they will tell you this is a fair representation of who she is as a person. I for one have always admired her for how vocal she is (in more ways than one) and her openness when it comes to highs and lows in her life. In that respect, she has beautifully translated this to the stage, allowing every single person in the audience to feel a personal and intimate connection to her – the power of this cannot be understated, nor can the skill it takes to pull this off.

It would have been very easy for Carrie Hope Fletcher to do a standard by-numbers sow for her first concert tour – audiences would have loved her show regardless. So the fact she has done something so bold and creative with ‘An Open Book’ truly is awe-inspiring. It was a risk but one that paid off massively. Carries stunning vocals, charisma and unrivalled ability to tell a story made this a masterclass performance and a show like no other I have seen before. Another example of why Carrie is considered to be an incredible performer, there really is no end to her talents in this refreshingly open show full of heart. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter has in store for her.

Star rating: four stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ✩

It must be hard staying humble when you’re Carrie Hope Fletcher. Her achievements would be impressive for a performer who’s been around for twice as long, but for someone who is only just 30 they are truly remarkable.

Her first solo touring show draws on a stage career that has included, across 22 years, West End and touring roles in Les Misérables (both as young Éponine, grown-up Éponine and Fantine), Mary Poppins , Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , Heathers ,  War of the Worlds , The Addams Family and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ill-fated Cinderella (more on that later). But it also capitalises on her parallel career as an author (six novels and counting), blogger and online influencer.

On a higgledy-piggledy, artfully messy set strewn with bookshelves, desks, sofas and other detritus you’d find in a study or writing den, Fletcher tells us that we are in a representation of her mind. Her first show is about to start but she hasn’t got round to writing it and we – the audience – are going to help her to create it. Fletcher’s persona is down to earth and relatable, and this premise – which could seem contrived in someone else’s hands – perfectly taps into the endearingly unassuming traits that her dedicated fans adore her for.

Said fans can help to shape the show by choosing from a selection of stories – with enigmatic titles like ‘An Icy Story’ or ‘A Saucy Scoop’ – via Fletcher’s website that have songs attached to them. You can tell that some sections – like Act II opener ‘I’d Rather Be Me’ from Mean Girls and closing number ‘The Life I Never Led’ from Sister Act – are locked in, but keeping the rest of the setlist fluid gives the show, smoothly directed by Ruthie Stephens, a nicely interactive, fresh feel.

Each song has a proceeding anecdote to accompany it. The scripts for these are contained in books concealed around the set, giving the show the feel of a scavenger hunt as well as a concert performance. These anecdotes, ranging from backstage stories and reflections on career highs to confessional, personal ruminations on her younger self, are revealing without being too revelatory – the consummate blogger and social media poster knowing exactly how much of herself to give away. It’s a shame that – at this stage of the tour – Fletcher still has to read some of these stories, but the innate performer in her sells them to perfection.

Those expecting her to dish the dirt on the disappointment that was Cinderella might be, well, disappointed. The closest we get is a section where Fletcher talks about the shows she’s been involved in since the workshop stage. This, of course, includes Cinderella , to which she knowingly adds “and we all know how that worked out!”

Unexpectedly, the other thing that the production showcases is her incredible voice, which is powerful and expressive throughout, and melds beautifully with her onstage six-piece band. Never is this more evident than when she is mining Les Misérables’ iconic epic ‘On My Own’ for all its raw emotional power, but she also has fun cutting loose with the tongue-twisting, modern classic that is ‘Pulled’ from The Addams Family .

But there are surprises in the song choices. A suitably embarrassing extract from her 2007 teenage diary leads into a rendition of ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’ by her favourite band from her youth, My Chemical Romance, while she ends a section poking fun at her “disgustingly talented” older brother Tom Fletcher by singing ‘The Last Song’ by his band McFly.

“Disgustingly talented” is an epithet that you could easily apply to Fletcher herself. But she’s also likeably self-effacing (or does a great job of projecting that quality) and certainly deserves this showcase of her considerable talents. This polished show also proves that she is equally adept at holding an audience’s attention as herself as she is while in character.

Carrie Hope Fletcher Talks About New Chapters Ahead Of Debut Solo Tour An Open Book

For Carrie Hope Fletcher, 2022 was destined to be one to remember – she was leading the cast in the title role of a West End show, was living with her long-term boyfriend, and was going to turn 30.

Little did she expect it to turn out to be quite such a landmark in her life. Or did she? As the musical theatre actress, vlogger and author says, 22 is her lucky number…

But it didn’t get off to the best start, with the show she was starring in, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella having a Covid-enforced eight-week stop, and the end of a four-year relationship.

Carrie might have been forgiven for rethinking her lucky charm.

However, come the end of the year, and it was a different story: Carrie had happily turned 30, found a new, true love – and got engaged, impressed critics with her debut in a Bertolt Brecht play, did her first pantomime, and had announced her first solo concert tour An Open Book.

In the past, Carrie has spoken ‘openly’ about her fear of concert performances, so what changed her mind this time?

“Nothing. I’m still petrified!” she admits. “You know what it is, I don’t feel like I’m very good at being myself. I love being an actress, hiding behind a character, which I find interesting and fun getting into the mindset of other people and telling stories, using their emotions.”

With a CV featuring roles as diverse as Eponine and Fantine in Les Misérables, Veronica Sawyer in Heathers, Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family and Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Carrie’s certainly gotten to grips with a range of characters over the years.

“But on stage as myself, it feels a bit boring by comparison. I haven’t got the same to offer as Veronica, or Wednesday, or Fantine…

carrie hope fletcher an open book tour setlist

“In concert, if people don’t like what you’re saying and singing, it’s very much you. People can say I hated how you played Veronica Sawyer, and I can put her in the way and blame the character. But a concert, it’s very personal and everything you’re feeling is very much yourself, your feelings, your stories and your voice.

“That is terrifying. I’m a people pleaser. I like people to like me so it’s scary to put myself into that place where they potentially won’t.”

Fans will get to hear Carrie sing numbers from some of her previous roles, as well as new songs in the concert – which will also see her sharing stories about her life.

“I’m getting around hating being myself by writing it like a show, creating a script and character for myself to feel more comfortable,” she explains. “It feels very much like I’m creating a little show for myself.

“Every time I’ve done a concert, I feel like it’s always been I Dreamed A Dream from Les Mis or Pulled from The Addams Family – it’s always songs I’ve done in shows.

“This time, there will be songs I’ve never got to sing. Things from roles I’ve not had chance to play, roles I probably will never play – which is a dream to be able to do. But they will all have messages or be something that I want to say.”

With Carrie also known as an author, the tour title An Open Book, is an appropriate one – as Carrie admits she’s ‘always been an over sharer’.

“If someone chats on a bus, I’ll chat back,” she said. “But people do see oversharing as a negative thing. But it is literally your job to go on stage and open up your chest and say, ‘this is what I’ve got’.”

With dramatic changes and challenges shaping 2022, following on from the upheaval throughout the theatre industry due to the pandemic, how does Carrie feel as she enters a new decade of her life?

“The past couple of years have been a lot, a real rollercoaster,” she said. “But it’s funny because 22 is my lucky number and I do feel that last year really was ‘my’ year. I turned 30 on the 22nd (of October) 2022, and feel it’s been a real turning point moment.

“I had a massive break up in January 2022. We were off from Cinderella at the time because of Covid causing an eight-week show down. We went back into rehearsals before getting back on stage, then found out via social media that we were closing early.

“That was the early part of the year. It was a whole debacle. Since then, so many amazing things have happened. I announced this tour, did Treason in concert, Caucasian Chalk Circle at Kingston, then into panto. I met Joel, and we got engaged.

“Everything that could have happened last year did. But it’s all happened for a reason – the good and the bad. But it’s made me feel like I can do anything now! It’s taught me to be more ballsy about walking into the unknown.

“I guess I feel like it’s my time to say, ‘Screw it’ and walk on stage to be me. Whatever happens, happens and that is a part of me I don’t think I had before. A new kind of self-confidence – and it’s great that it’s coincided with turning 30.

“I didn’t have a bucket list for hitting 30, instead, I’ve got a list that’s overflowing with things I’d have never expected to have achieved! I have had the most amazing career, met amazing people, travelled to incredible places.

“My 20’s were unbelievable and wild. A lot I did I’m grateful for having done, now I’m glad to have turned 30 and to have a chance to sit back a bit and not feel this kind of tenacious need to chase everything anymore.

“The foundations I’ve built for myself in my 20’s will allow me to be a bit calmer in my 30’s. I have things I’ve always wanted to do – and now I’m in a place where I can consider those things without worrying about it.”

carrie hope fletcher an open book tour setlist

Something that was certainly on Carrie’s mind as she moved into 2023, besides her new tour, was the prospect of marriage – and she and Joel managed to surprise their family and friends by eloping to Gretna Green in February, then announcing their nuptials via an exclusive magazine deal.

“I’ve always been of the mind that if I was to get engaged, then it was to be married – not to have a long engagement,” she said. “And Joel was very much the same.

“It’s about a private moment between two people, and like I said – I’m not great at being myself in front of a lot of people, even if they’re our family and friends, I get awkward.

“Added to that, the press interest in our engagement blew my mind. A national newspaper contacted my sister-in-law’s [Giovanna Fletcher] publicist asking for a comment on my engagement. I hadn’t hidden my ring or anything on Instagram, but it was our moment to decide when we wanted to share it – not theirs… I was baffled and angry about it.

“So, the Gretna Green thing was our way of keeping ownership of our day. We had told our parents we were going to do it, but it was the date that was the big secret, as we were terrified people would turn up if they knew.

“The day itself, we had two people who worked there as our witnesses, said the basic legal vows – I was an emotional mess, then we went into the café next door and had cheese and onion sandwiches and a coffee, all in our outfits. Then it was back to our hotel where we also shared some longer vows we had written, just the two of us.

“And now, it’s really nice to know we’ve done the legal bit and it’s all official, but that we still have a celebration to plan with everyone – that will come later this year, when we’re both a little less busy.”

And like her wedding planning, Carrie’s route into West End fame is far from conventional, despite her having built those strong career foundations.

A child actor from the age of seven, including her stage debut as Young Eponine in Les Misérables and a stint as Jemima Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, ‘fearless’ Carrie chose not to attend the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School – alongside her brother, Tom Fletcher of McFly fame.

Although signed to their agency, she didn’t want the pressure of auditioning alongside classmates, and opted to stay in a mainstream school.

Then, after GCSEs, she ‘took a risk’ and skipped the option of A Levels and drama school, to write a musical with Tom – one which saw the siblings meet Steven Spielberg in New York, among other big industry names. The project is still ‘on the backburner’ more than 10 years later but hasn’t been completely shelved.

Carrie ‘missed the boat for drama school’, but with the help of a contact forged during this time, she signed to the agency which still represents her today – as one of the very first clients in their new musical theatre department.

carrie hope fletcher an open book tour setlist

Perfectly timed, as Carrie had already told them her dream was to play Eponine in Les Misérables, the agency put her forward to audition for the epic musical. And the rest is history.

“I was in Les Mis then for two years and eight months,” she said. It’s still a very precious memory for me, that first night in Les Mis, in my first role as an adult and the role I’d wanted all my life, from the age of seven and playing little Eponine.

“Standing backstage, wearing what felt like eight costumes, all layered up, hearing the overture really hit me like a brick wall. I have been in a lot of shows now, and performed in Les Mis a lot, but that overture still gets me. It’s very special.

“When you’re in a show like that, well, any show really, your current job is often your audition for the next one. Your agents bring casting directors to see you, which will lead to you being called to audition for something else – sometimes even being cast directly.

“Everything you do opens doors to the next stage – and that’s what makes this industry very exciting.”

So, after An Open Book, what will come next for Carrie in this new chapter of her life?

“Getting older opens up this other new suitcase of roles that I have never had access to before,” she says, smiling. “A role I’ve always wanted to play is Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd, and I am still too young for that role, but each year older is another step closer to it.

“And there are so many new musicals at the moment, they are exciting and the creativity that’s happening is brilliant. The stories are getting wilder, and that all affords new opportunities to us as actors.

“Another role I’ve always loved and wanted to play is the dentist in Little Shop Of Horrors – but gender swapped. There’s nothing there that says the character has to be a man, so why not? He’s a character that’s a villain to the Nth degree, that’s why he became a dentist; he’s just mean for the sake of being mean. By contrast, female villains always have a backstory and a reason why they are mean. It would be such fun to just be an outright villain.

“Doing Caucasian Chalk Circle was an eye opener too, in terms of maybe doing more plays – I would love to do Shakespeare. Although Caucasian Chalk Circle had 28 songs in it, I’d say it was more a musical! In the sense of the storyline and the subject matter, the emotion, and the amount of dialogue, it felt more like a play. But in the preparation and rehearsal process, it felt the same as musicals I’ve done – so that familiarity helped me settle into it.

“The thing for most performers, is that it’s all about telling the stories… Then, if you can sing you end up doing musicals and telling those stories through song.

“There are surprising boundaries between musicals, plays, TV, film. There is a kind of snobbery though, especially towards musical theatre performers. But the reality is, that we are all actors, doing the same thing of telling stories – there might be some changes in exactly how we do it across the mediums, but the basics are the same.”

Those ‘basics’ will stand Carrie in good stead for what is currently set to be her biggest adventure in 2023, taking her own stories on the road in An Open Book.

And perhaps she’ll be rethinking that lucky number? 23 anyone…

carrie hope fletcher an open book tour setlist

I have followed Carrie Hope Fletcher for several years, ever since discovering her YouTube channel in lockdown. As for many others, her videos provided a slice of the stage in a time when theatres across the world lay dark. After a few failed attempts to see her in other shows in London, I jumped at the opportunity to see her live on stage locally, snagging tickets the day they went on sale.

To describe this as simply a concert would be a discredit to the fantastic show that has been created. The stage itself is warmly lit by a mismatch of lamps. In between the comfort of a well-loved sofa, a desk, family photos and even a huge painting of Edgar the cat, we are transported into Carrie’s world. She locks us away safely in her mind (even making a joke about the audience being there) as she struggles to craft a narrative for her tour.

Each song performed is prefixed by a personal story, taking the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions. Whilst some are performed every night, others are voted for by the audience, with Carrie herself not knowing the finalised setlist until minutes before the show. It is the stories themselves which are voted for, with the songs themselves being a surprise. I was fortunate to chat with Carrie before the show where she beamed with excitement about potentially getting to perform tracks that had yet to be picked. It was lovely to see her as excited to be there as her audience were, who she had in the palm of her hand throughout.

Fletcher’s vocals were as spine-tinglingly good as you’d expect, with her performance of ‘I Say No’ from Heathers bringing the house down. The vulnerability through the stories told and songs sung made it feel more like a catch up with an old friend. It was old friends themselves who have helped bring this joyous show to the stage. Carrie has lovingly cherry-picked those she has worked with previously to join her on her first solo tour, including the MD from Cinderella being her MD for ‘An Open Book.’ Bursting with heart from beginning to end, ‘An Open Book’ is absolute perfection and it would be an absolute crime to miss it.

The tour continues until 11/06/2023 where it concludes in Glasgow. See below for tour dates and booking information:

Note: My ticket was paid for. Irrespective of whether a show is gifted or bought, I always ensure that my reviews are fair and based on my honest opinion alone.

Carrie Hope Fletcher: An Open Book, UK Concert Tour 2023 (London Palladium)

26 May, 2023

(seen at the performance on 26th May 2023)

Given that Carrie Hope Fletcher is far more than just a musical theatre actor, it should be no real surprise that what is billed as a “UK Concert Tour” turns out more of a one-woman jukebox musical biography.

Producers Lambert Jackson decide to shift her sitting room and study to the stage. Jonny Dickie and Joseph Ed Thomas give her a comfy-looking sofa, solid desk with MacBook to refer to, and books and lamps scattered everywhere. Plus a 5 piece band where the kitchen should be of course.

We are inside Carrie Hope Fletcher’s mind as she tries to write a show with the help of her adoring fans. Interspersing songs (which she chooses for feeling that they make her soul leave her body, scratches an itch or puts into lyric emotions she cannot otherwise express) with amusingly candid memories, the triumphant ending is a finished script in her hands.

Opening both halves with “Another Chapter” by Arielle Jacobs, her first story about a 4am pole dancing snog in Wardour Street has her admitting “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” from “Grease” – and yes, she does of course hit that near-impossible note.

Moving on to her career, a little something from “Treason” is followed by a mash-up of “Stars” and “On My Own” from the show she has played 959 times and more – with an amusing childhood anecdote from it as well.

Her best known public persona of “understanding older sister” comes to the fore as she relates her brother Tom’s culinary disasters and her own insecurities before “Pretty Funny” and a McFly tribute popper “Bubblewrap.”

Closing the first half, “I Say No” delighted the Corn Nuts in the audience, even more so hearing the song went in 8 weeks into the first London run, at 5 days notice, causing one super-fan on the front row to almost require medical attention.

Second half, “Another Chapter” and the true philosophy that everybody should and would take their own laundry home rather than anyone else’s; that “I’d Rather Be Me” (from “Mean Girls”).

In that mood, singing into a hair brush, “Thnks Fr The Mmrs” and “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” from Fall Out Boy and her favourite My Chemical Romance are a tribute to her teenage years as the band vamps with a few bars of “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”

Sara Bareilles “Someone Who Loves Me” is a good contrast with “Wherever He Ain’t” from “Mack and Mabel” and a chance for a proper belt at a classic show tune.

"Les Dennis as 'Uncle Fester' spotting failure" Scott Paige joins her onstage for a vaudeville “You’re Timeless To Me” duet to shake the tone a little in a celebration of deepest friendship.

Ruthie Stephens directs with a firm hand, helping a performer who admits being always nervous to find an on-stage persona to carry the evening yet still reveal the truth we expect to see in a concert style event.

This is best expressed in her choice of “The Age Of Not Believing,” from Disney’s “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.” On paper a perfect fit for this wise-beyond-her-years star, and sung beautifully. Yet it felt horribly unfair that she should have already enough scars to sing that song from knowledge at such a young age.

Also at a young age, impatient Carrie would fast-forward songs in musicals that she would later base her whole career on. One she didn’t was “Watch What Happens” from “Newsies,” an apt title as she launches into her final advice that life should be about self-exploration even if we don’t go down every pathway we potentially might.

Closing on “The Life I Never Led” from “Sister Act” underlines it, as she took bows before a standing ovation.

Ben Van Tienen and Nick Pinchbeck’s musical arrangements and Van Tienen’s direction are unafraid to tailor the numbers to the voice, suiting the tempo to the mood as appropriate.

Support act Trinity, an Irish trio of superb voices are also well chosen. “My Love Is Fairer Than Any,” “Shenandoah” and “Danny Boy” are expected of an Irish group, before a building “From Now On” from “The Greatest Showman” and ending after amusing banter with “Anthem” (“Chess The Musical”) merging into “Go The Distance” (“Hercules”).

The only missed opportunity of the entire night – according to several ladies in the souvenir stand line – appeared to be not selling copies of Ms Hope Fletcher’s sparkling rainbow and black dress, all credit to Lois Gay on wardrobe.

Fact is, Carrie Hope Fletcher proves here that the first 25 years or so of her career have been merely moving equipment to base camp. Past conquests have been high, but there are surely even greater peaks ahead. This audit of achievement to date is much promise of things to come.

Fletcher on healing, her new album and being back on tour

NPR's Juana Summers speaks with Cari Fletcher, who goes by the stage name FLETCHER, about her newest album "In Search Of The Antidote" and what it's like to be back on tour.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE" )

FLETCHER: (Singing) Did we take it too far? Maybe.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

Last spring Carrie Fletcher realized something was wrong - like, more than just the stress of a worldwide concert tour, a deep fatigue that caused long-term concern for her singing voice as well.

FLETCHER: When I had to take the tour down and I saw, you know, applauses get quiet and social media get quiet and then all of the things, you're really forced to, like, look at yourself in the mirror and really decide and see what, you know, your worth is outside of all of those things. Like, there was a lot of silence.

SUMMERS: Turns out it was Lyme disease, and so Carrie, who goes by Fletcher onstage, found herself facing a major physical recovery and a lot of unprocessed mental health to work through. She went back to her hometown in New Jersey, and with all that downtime, she started writing a new album to be called "In Search Of The Antidote."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ANTIDOTE")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I get high. I get high. I get low. I get low. You're my dopamine state. You're my sanity dose. I get high.

SUMMERS: A year later, Fletcher is out on the road again, singing this new album to her loyal fans. We caught her earlier this week on a day off in Germany, and she was stoked about being back.

FLETCHER: To return back to a sold-out tour with all of these beautiful fans and, you know, like, scream-singing these songs back to me that - some of which I wrote from such a place of desperation but also a place of, like, hope and happiness and love and excitement for the future and - I pinch myself all the time when I get to a new country that I've never even been to before and they're singing word for word with me. It's like - it's insane that this is my job.

SUMMERS: Is there a favorite moment that you could share from the tour that you're on now that really just drives it home for you?

FLETCHER: People have been bringing crazy signs to the show. I have a song called "Becky's So Hot," and there's a point where I'm, like, grinding on a mic stand. And so the fans started doing this thing where they're like, can I be the human mic stand?

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "BECKY'S SO HOT")

FLETCHER: (Singing) Are you in love like we were? If I were you, I'd probably keep her - makes me want to hit her when I see her 'cause Becky's so hot in your vintage T-shirt.

There was a sign yesterday that said, truth or dare. And I saw it, and I picked dare. And then she folded the card over again, and it was like, I dare you to let me be your mic stand tonight. Somebody came to a concert dressed up as a microphone to the concert, and I was like, the commitment is real.

SUMMERS: I mean, this album - it's got rage and joy and lust and mess, which is something that you have certainly never shied away from mining, like in the lead single, "Eras Of Us," which I have heard is about running into your ex at Taylor Swift's Eras tour - true story?

FLETCHER: Yes. Truth or dare - that is the truth.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ERAS OF US")

FLETCHER: (Singing) It's nice to meet you.

Yeah. I had not seen my ex since the day that we had broken up, and we bumped into each other at the Taylor Swift concert. You know, to be at this show where both of us were, like, screaming these songs to an artist that has narrated so many of my breakups, so many of my romances - I just got hit with, you know, a wave of emotion of all of the eras of us, of her and I.

FLETCHER: (Singing) A story of love, stealing the air right from my lungs. Girl of my dreams, forever we're young. Remember it just the way it was, the eras of us.

And I think that's something I always really try to do with my music - is just to drop people into a really specific scene, into a really specific moment. And it's one of my favorite songs I've ever written. It just feels like a story.

SUMMERS: I wonder if you can tell us the story behind one of the songs on the album, "Doing Better," because that song's gotten stuck in my head - this idea of what better really is, why better feels worse.

FLETCHER: Yeah. Wow. I actually have a song on my last album - I have a song called "Better Version," and the lyric ends with, and now some other person's going to get the better version...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG "BETTER VERSION")

FLETCHER: (Singing) Of me.

...Of me. Just in the last couple months, I was reflecting on, OK, well, what is the better version of me doing? And is she actually doing better? And I wrote a song called "Doing Better" that just really reflects on all the ways of, like, so many of the ways that my career had taken off...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DOING BETTER")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I'm doing better. I don't know if you remember when I told you in September that you wouldn't recognize me.

...Getting to do all these, like, incredible, incredible things and perform in all these places. And I felt awful.

FLETCHER: (Singing) I felt like I was flying. I felt the stars aligning. I always thought that if I ever got this high, I'd like it. I'm doing better. I've been looking for my center, but my tummy still hurts. Why does better feel worse?

We're kind of sold this narrative of, like, you know, we should have this amount of success by this amount of age and this type of relationship and this degree and this job. And this idea, this dream of better, you know, that we all have - it doesn't feel good. And it's actually, like, the deeper stuff, the stuff that, like, we don't put on display is, like, where so much of the antidote really is.

(SOUNDBITE OF FLETCHER SONG, "GIRL OF MY DREAMS")

SUMMERS: I don't want to get too messy here on public radio, but I do have to ask you about the ladies. I mean, your songs - people call them queer love anthems and queer anthems. And I'm curious how much you think about where your music fits within the sphere of queer pop music. Is that something that's, like, front of mind for you at all?

FLETCHER: When I first started writing, I was, like, really just embarking on my journey with my sexuality and just, you know, when I started talking about all of it for the first time and just falling in love with a girl for the first time. And I never really set out with a specific mission of, like, oh, I need the music to be categorized as this. It was just like, I just need to be free.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "GIRL OF MY DREAMS")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I'm on heartbreak No. 4. Tequila doesn't hit no more. I got a new rebound. I'm falling for me now.

When I think about where my music fits in terms of, you know, the scope of music, it's just - it's meant to go to whoever needs to find it. And my queer journey has been so embraced by the community, and I couldn't ask for anything more. But it's also just - you know, it's also so deeply universal, like, this idea of, like, belonging and...

SUMMERS: Right.

FLETCHER: ...Experiencing love for the first time.

SUMMERS: I mean, that's one of the things that strikes me, right? Whether you are dating a woman or married to a man, there's something really beautiful and universal with the way that you describe these intense and heartfelt and, at times, overwhelming feelings when it comes to love and lust and relationships and all of the spectrum in between there. It's something that works for everybody.

FLETCHER: Oh, I love that. Thank you. Yeah. It's - for me, it's always just - I've never wanted to - anyone to feel, like, alienated from the music, from the emotions, from the feelings. Like, I felt alienated for so long as a kid, you know? I just felt so in my own world and lonely and so sad. And to just - to find that sense of home, like, in myself and in my own music...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "PRETENDING")

FLETCHER: (Singing) I say goodnight as if my heart isn't wrenching.

And that's really what it is for me. It's just, like, the feelings are universal. We all navigate it. We all go through it, no matter how you identify, like, orientation-wise, gender, you know, sexuality. It's - we're human.

SUMMERS: Carrie Fletcher, thank you so much.

FLETCHER: Thank you so much. I appreciate you. This was a really sweet conversation.

SUMMERS: Fletcher's newest album, "In Search Of The Antidote," is out now.

FLETCHER: (Singing) We'll keep on pretending.
