Voygr Expeditions

  • Siberian Tiger Expedition

The Siberian Tiger Expedition has a strong focus on conservation. Explore the magnificent Russian Taiga in winter with renowned Siberian tiger experts.

The Siberian Tiger Expedition

Siberian Tiger Expedition

Far-Eastern Russia is the last remaining stronghold of the majestic Siberian Tiger, the largest of all big cats, with big males weighing up to 300kg. With just around 500 of them left, it is also among the world’s rarest cats. Join us on a winter journey to the magical Russian Taiga and experience the thrill of tracking a Siberian tiger.

Conserving the Siberian Tiger

Voygr works with some of the world’s leading Siberian tiger conservationists in the region. Our main goal here is to help build up ecotourism and bring more money into communities that share their spaces with these big cats, in turn reducing conflict over resources.

The Siberian Tiger Expedition is for adventurous travelers. We’ll travel to a remote area of Khabarovsk Krai, a huge province that borders China, with the legendary Amur river acting as the international boundary between the two countries. Access to our private reserve is via 4×4 through the incredible Boreal forests that define this region.

Stays are in beautiful rustic Russian log cabins. They are insulated and heated. The camp food is delicious with hearty Russian fare served. During the expedition we will accompany Russian Siberian tiger experts on snow mobile setting and collecting camera traps. You’ll get to place your own. The heavy snow means that the tigers actually prefer to walk on the snowmobile paths instead of trudging through deep snow – so there are always tracks visible in the snow each morning.

Chances of actually seeing a Siberian tiger are low because of the thick tree-cover and the immense amount of snow. However, the Reserve reports that on average 1 out of 8 or 9 groups catch a glimpse.

Photographing the Siberian Tiger

Just like on the Amur Leopard Expedition , the most certain way of getting a Siberian tiger in front of your camera is to bait it with a dead deer or boar. However, Voygr does not think this method is ethical and so we do not use it. Instead, we use the same tools that the BBC, Netflix and NatGeo use to get great footage of Siberian tigers. DSLR camera traps. Our tiger experts know by heart the trails, trees, and rocks local tigers use to patrol their territory and leave their scent. We’ll position your DSLR camera traps in the right place. Cameras can be in place for as long as you need, on average 3-6 months, to get show-stopping images. We’ll maintain the traps for you including changing batteries, swapping memory cards, and eventually shipping your equipment back to you. Our photography experts will work with you so you can put together the right kit before coming over.

Bespoke Departures for the Siberian Tiger

We don’t list the itinerary publicly because we have assessed that the habitat is not ready for mass-market tourism. If you’re interested in contributing to protect the Siberian Tiger and embarking on a quest to see it, even if via game cameras, we’d love to build an expedition for you. Unlike our snow leopard expeditions (100% success rate, the Siberian Tiger expedition has a low chance of success to actually see the tiger. However, the experience itself, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

You’ll get to hang out with tough Russian rangers and anti-poaching teams that have basically saved the Amur leopard and Siberian tiger from the brink of extinction, and experience the immense beauty of the Russian taiga in the winter. For lovers of the outdoors and adventurous travelers, this experience is truly phenomenal. You will have one of the world’s top expedition teams supporting you. Remote regions, winter expeditions, and difficult terrain are what Voygr specializes in. We keep our guests comfortable: no-matter the conditions. You can also combine this expedition with the Amur Leopard Expedition .

Just like all of our other expeditions, this tour is not subcontracted or given over for implementation to any other agency – we control all our own operations. We know the rangers, we know the drivers, and our own expedition leaders guide it.

Why Book With Voygr?

Actually local. at every destination..

We don’t subcontract our tours to “local” companies. We are the local company. At Voygr, our expeditions aren’t planned by “specialists” that have visited a destination once on a familiarization trip, 4 years ago. Our experts live and work in the regions where we take our guests.

Empowering Remote Communities

Our singular mission when starting Voygr almost a decade ago was to put more money into remote communities. Controlling our own operations means that we can own our own infrastructure, hire our own local employees with exclusive contracts and ensure that your dollars actually end up where you’re traveling to instead of lining pockets in NYC or London.

Conservation is Key

Environmental conservation and protecting endangered species are core values. Voygr commits 20% of our annual profits to the High Asia Habitat Fund . In addition, we support several environmental causes. Expeditions with Voygr are not just carbon neutral – they are Carbon Negative.

Read more about Voygr Expeditions to learn about our ethics, how giving back to the communities we travel to is part of our DNA, and what steps we take to actively preserve our planet.

Crazy Tiger's Trek and Tours

A group of 7 of us went on the full-day jungle safari and canoe ride with our guide, Rajendra. He was extremely knowledgable and made the overall experience very memorable. We had a yummy packed lunched and spotted many animals. Would recommend booking with 'Crazy Tiger's Trek and Tours' to anyone looking for a fun day in Chitwan.

Thank you very much to giving your valuable time to write a review about our tours and thank you to visite Chitwan National Park.

Great guys! Already made several trips to Chitwan and walked with them on trips. Excellent know their work, they know the habits of animals, work with the soul. I recommend!

Binod is a guide working out of Green Park Hotel who guided us through the jungle by canoe and on foot, who took us through a local village at Sauraha and who took us on a early bird watching safari. Binod was extremely well credentialed and passionate about all the flora and fauna as well as his local people. It was a joy to experience both animals (including rhinos and crocodiles) and birds in their natural habitat. We will never forget his unbridled enthusiasm in urging us to follow a rhino , on foot through the jungle which resulted in some incredible close--up photos. The village tour was very personal and interesting moving us to donate a water pump to the village. If you are visiting Chitwan seek him out at Green Park Hotel. Arnis and Penelope T from Australia

Thank you for visiting Chitwan National Park, and thank you to write about guide. Sorry , We are Not belongs to hotel Green Park, and we don't work for Hotel, Green park thank you.

After comparing pricing and activity options, we determined the Chitwan Jungle Guides offered the best advice on how to get the most out of our two available days. We did the one day jeep tour the first day, the elephant ride the next morning, and a canoe/bird watching ride down river and a jungle walking tour back that afternoon. The total cost was about $170 each including park admissions for two days. We opted for the elephant ride into the park on the government owned elephants rather than the less expensive ride in the buffer zone next to the park where many more visitors go. The difference is that with so few visitors going into the park by elephant, we saw far more wildlife, include 7 rhinos as close as 25 ft. The canoe trip was just two of us and two guides. We saw and photographed many exotic birds along the way. Then we walked back upstream in the jungle. We had one close encounter with a leopard that was stalking a bird, and the guide found a giant elephant footprint that he said was the largest he had ever seen. Later while sitting in a tower along the trail, the guides showed us pictures and names of all the birds we had seen and took the time to tell us about everything we had seen. Another guide came along with his group and seemed uninterested in his group, not talking to them at all while they were in the observation tower. We were so happy to have our attentive guides. We can highly recommend Rah and his fellow guides as highly informed, interested, interesting, attentive and offering highly competitive prices. You will enjoy your time with them1

Visiting Chitwan is a memorable one for us. Lots of activities that you can do. We went on nature and jungle walks with our guide Lama. We saw a rhino and a couple crocodiles. It was exciting. While elephant riding, we got to see some deers in the jungle. Just simply beautiful!

We had a very good experience with Crazy Tiger's. Our guides Rajendra and Ame were very good at spotting and tracking wildlife and were knowledgeable about nature. They were also very friendly and nice to be around. We were very impressed at the way they track animals, from noticing footprints on the ground to scratching and smelling the soil for traces of smells. Their guiding price (1400Rs person/day) was also very reasonable and overall they provide a great service. We did a two hour canoe ride as well (2000Rs) that was nice. However, for half of it we couldn't see anything as it was very foggy. If you are canoeing, make sure the fog is gone before you start otherwise you'll waste your money. It's better to wait until 9am and then go than to stare at the fog. A word of advice about the whole experience regardless of the company you goes with, bring plenty of cash as prices for food and accommodation are very high inside the park.

4. Assist in Conservation Projects on the Seychelles Islands

This adventure tour isn’t exactly all play, but in a setting as remote and dreamy as the Seychelles, you’ll be happy to volunteer some of your time for the chance to explore this sandy playground. Conservation projects with GVI can include monitoring hawksbill turtles, tracking sicklefin lemon sharks, or collecting data on mangroves and other plant species. When your conservation work is done for the week, grab a snorkel and look for manta rays, take in a sunset with your fellow volunteers, or head to another island for more adventure.

Crystal blue waves in the Seychelles

I’m sorry, is this even real? Start by signing up for overseas adventure tours in the Seychelles like...yesterday!

Volunteering can give you a more meaningful vacation and a closer connection to your destination, but if you’re looking for a more flexible schedule, there are plenty of other adventure trips in the Seychelles . A note of warning: be prepared for your friends to accuse you of photoshopping your snaps, because the beaches in the Seychelles are almost too perfect to be believed!

While all of your friends are sitting through freshman lectures, you’ll be confirming that you made the right decision to take a gap year as you journey across Nepal and India with Gapforce . Then you’ll head to India to explore Delhi, meet Tibetan refugees, and head down the coast to the beaches of Goa, where you can finally catch your breath.

Yes you canteen! Hydrate up for your trek through Nepal.

From pasta to parmigiano to panna cotta , you might want to pack some pants with an elastic waistband for this trip. Food will be on your mind during this month-long program with the Experiment in International Living , and your taste buds will thank you as you indulge in farmer’s market treats with your host family and create cannoli with fellow students at an Italian culinary institute. Your social media feeds may temporarily become home to endless shots of antipasto trays and gelato cones, but your friends and family will forgive you once you return home with a buffet of newfound cooking skills.

BELLISSIMA! Not every adventure is totally heart-pumping, but you’ll get a little bit of everything with adventure tours in Italy.

No matter where you go in Italy, its cuisine will no doubt enhance your experience, but not everyone is a chef. For those who’d rather explore one of the country’s other facets, from hiking in the Alps to sailing on the Mediterranean, there are plenty of adventure tours in Italy to choose from.

8. Experience the Past and Present in a Panamanian Paradise

Panama is much more than its canal, a simple fact you’ll come to deeply understand after spending two weeks in this Central American country with Global Works . After exploring modern Panama City, you’ll head to the Kuna Yala islands where you’ll participate in a service project and learn about the residents’ way of life. From there, the group heads north to spend a week in a rural village, giving students an opportunity to practice Spanish, complete a community project, and spend time with their host families. If that’s not enough adventure for you, throw in some surfing, rafting, and snorkeling to get the adrenaline flowing.

San Blas Islands, Panama

Put the Panama in “panorama” with your epic photos from your adventure holiday in Panama.

This program is designed for high school students, and it’s the perfect opportunity for those who are traveling abroad for the first time. Older travelers can still find plenty of other adventure tours in Panama ranging from surfing to yoga and more.

9. Live and Work on a Wildlife Reserve in Israel

This program hosted by GoEco mixes equal amounts of work and play, but when your work involves feeding leopards, the line between the two gets blurry. The wildlife reserve houses endangered and rare species of desert animals, and visitors have the chance to assist rangers in caring for these creatures. From oryx to addax, and caracal to hyena, you’ll learn about and take care of animals you never even knew existed! During your free time, you can catch the bus to Eilat, snorkel in the Red Sea, visit a camel ranch, or head across the border to Jordan.

Ein Gedi, Israel, desert boulders

Don’t desert me! Unless it’s to roam around these boulders in Israel.

Animal lovers will feel right at home on the reserve, but it is located in a remote, rural area and some travelers may prefer a faster-paced adventure tour in Israel . Options are plentiful and range from coastal exploration to historical excavation.

Next steps to finding adventure tours.

There’s an adventure holiday out there with your name on it, but it can take some work to find the perfect fit. After all, nothing good comes easily, right? Whether you’re craving a nice long hike or want to spend your summer traversing Southeast Asia , putting in the work will 100% be worth it as your flight takes off.

  • Pick an Adventure Tours Program. Checking out MyGoAbroad is the easiest way to start sorting through the hundreds of options, and you can even enlist an Online Advisor if you’re still feeling overwhelmed.
  • Read Reviews. Become friends with Google and drill down to the nitty gritty of each program you’re interested in. What do others have to say? Do they say the trip was a life-changing experience or do they comment that it seemed poorly organized? One bad review can be taken with a grain of salt, but if you find overwhelming complaints, pay attention.
  • Find Funding. Not all tours are cheap, so figuring out how to pay for your dream trip is essential. Some tours offer academic credit, which might allow college students to use scholarships or financial aid to cover some expenses. If that’s not the case, FundMyTravel is a great way to ask family and friends to help you out.
  • Verify Visas. After confirming your participation, you’ll need to think about visas. Many countries allow tourists on short-term stays to enter without a visa, but you may need one depending on your nationality, length of stay, and what you’ll be doing on your tour. Check with your program provider and the Embassy Directory to ensure you don’t get turned away at the border for not doing your homework.
  • Prep like a Pro. Once you’ve sent in your deposit and have your visa in hand, all that’s left is to prepare for departure! There are a lot of things to think about , so be smart and make sure you’re checking all the boxes. Figuring out how you’ll handle money, health care, and expectations before you depart will save you a lot of grief in the future.

What are you waiting for? Sign up for adventure trips abroad!

Our mission is simple, what people think about us.

Anna H

What if it’s raining?

In Iceland we have around 200 rainy days per year, so we’ve learned to live with it. Always remember to have your rain gear with you and if you indeed use it during the tour – well, you’re having a real Icelandic experience!

How big is the group?

For the time being, all our tours are private departures. It means once we confirm the tour, no other participants will join your slot and there’s no minimum to fill. The size of the group also depends on the season and current weather situation. If needed, we can assign more than one guide to your group, so no matter how many you are, let us know and we will find a perfect solution for you!

In what case my tour may be canceled?

We cancel the tour in case of very strong wind or an unusually heavy rain/snowfall – basically, all extreme conditions posing danger to the participants and beyond human control. Very rarely we might also face an activity on a glacier forcing us to withstand.

Do you offer private tours?

For the time being, almoust all our tours are private departures. Let us know what you are looking for, and we will customize it for you!

Tiger Snack - CRAZY TOUR STORIES

Join us as Tiger Snack tells you one of their crazy stories from touring.

Joshua Weidling

Joshua Weidling

In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, the alternative pop duo, Tiger Snack, shares one of their stories from being on the road. You can check out the story below:

We are incredibly “rock’n’roll” when it comes to our pre-show ritual. The rider is full of fresh fruit, kombucha, yerba maté and incense. We love to get the blood flowing with some yoga, ground ourselves with some meditation. Vocal warm ups of course, one of those huge straws in a drinking bottle to really get the chords heated. We sacrifice a lemon to the citrus gods before every show. Burn some sage, clear the energy. Then we invoke the spirit of Euterpe. The usual stuff, you know? There are two versions to our vibe before a performance. We will most definitely be playing some music in the background. It’s either something you can shake to, disco, funk anything with a groove, or we are deep in to some oriental jazz, ambient orchestral to calm us down a bit. If Amanda is feeling a bit nervous she likes to put on “surfacing” with Slipknot and head-bang it out. Otherwise binaural beats and blue lotus tea also helps. It’s us trying to find the best point where we are not too hyped and not too chill. It’s about managing our energy so that we can bring the best vibes to the audience. Vibes don’t lie.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. The seven craziest stats about Tiger Woods' career

Here are some of the more staggering numbers from one of the best sporting careers we've ever seen..

Tiger Woods has posted some ludicrous numbers in his career. (Getty Images)

Golf has been changed forever by Tiger Woods' entrance into the sport. We have never seen (and may never see again) anyone like Woods and the feats he's been able to accomplish throughout his 19-year professional career.

Of course, some of those feats are more pronounced than others (sorry, Bell Canadian Open) and some are just downright insane.

I want to look back at Tiger's career today and the seven craziest stats he's posted since making his pro debut in 1996.

26.1 -- That's the percentage of tournaments won by Woods on the PGA Tour. He's entered 302 of them and won a whopping 79. Even more stunning is his 21.2 percent of majors won that he's entered. He's 14 for 66 so far and has started out 14 for 46 (30.4 percent!).

11 -- That's how many times Tiger has missed the cut in his 302 PGA Tour tournaments played. For context: Phil Mickelson, arguably the second best player of Woods' generation, has over 70 missed cuts.

That 11 (two of which happened in 2014) is mythical.

683 -- That's how many weeks Woods has been No. 1 in the world. He has the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 11th longest streaks at No. 1 ever. He has twice been No. 1 for over 263 weeks in a row.

Nobody else has ever touched 100 in a row.

21 -- This is one of my favorite sneaky Tiger stats but at the end of 2006 he won six tournaments in a row and broke 70 in 21 of 24 rounds. I mean, look at this!

crazy tours ice tigers

Oh yeah, then he won his first tournament in 2007 as well.

19.4 -- On May 20, 2001, Tiger led the world golf rankings by 19.4 points over Mickelson, who was in second place.

To put that into context for you, No. 1 in the world right now, Rory McIlroy, only has a 11.6-point lead. ( Wink of the CBS Eye to  Chris Charles . )

4 -- This gets overlooked, but Woods has only finished outside the top 10 at the Masters just four times. He's only finished outside of the top five a total of six times. Six times out of 17!  That's absurd.

His finishes outside the top 10 are as follows: T15, T18, T22 and T40. If Woods only played the Masters for his career, he would be a no-doubt Hall of Famer.

14 -- It's still incredible, despite the fact that he'll never get to 18 majors, that he's won 14 of them. Woods' career will likely ultimately be looked upon by many as a disappointment because of how good he was at such a young age, but we got to (and are getting to) see history unfurl in front of our eyes.

The 14th major of Woods' career seemed to be a harbinger of at least 10 more, and maybe it will be (no, it won't).

Even if it isn't the fact that we watched Woods, as a professional, win 14 of his first 46 majors is something we should always treasure as golf fans.

15 Best Day Trips from Moscow

Moscow, the sprawling Russian capital, is a city that’s both full of history and contemporary culture.

This is the centre of the Russian world, a city that armies have invaded, where nations have clashed and where revolutions have played out through the centuries.

It’s a city on the fringe of Europe, but a place that is very much at the heart of European history and politics, and for visitors, it can be a complex and enthralling destination to visit.

As much as there is to see and to do in the city itself, there is just as much to experience on day trips from Moscow too.

While Russia is undoubtedly an expansive country, and many of the better-known cities such as St Petersburg or Volgograd are hundreds and hundreds of miles away, there are many more unknown and unusual destinations to visit within a few hours’ drive of the capital.

Immerse yourself in the Russian countryside, visit war memorials, battlefields and the lavish estates of the former Russian nobility. There are rural villages, grand Orthodox Monasteries and the chance to see Russian life outside of the city first-hand.

Here are the best day trips from Moscow.

Korolev, Russia

Located just an hour north of the Moscow city centre, Korolev is an area that is almost a suburb of the expansive capital, but has retained its own unique identity. During the Soviet era, this was one of the most important industrial areas in the country, because this was the base for Soviet Space Exploration.

During World War II, the factories here produced anti-tank guns that helped keep the Soviet Union in the fight. After Germany was defeated, the factories and research centres began to focus on space.

The city became a ‘Science City’ as skilled workers from across the Union came here to settle and to launch the space programme. It became one of the more affluent areas in the country, and today, that distinction can still be seen on the streets and in the buildings.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, Korolev remained the headquarters of Russian space travel and still hosts Russian Mission Control.

2. Borodino

Borodino, Russia

A two-hour drive to the west of Moscow is the battlefield of Borodino. This is a place that is revered in Russian history, and which perhaps should be much more well-known in wider European history too, because this is where the infamous French General Napolean Bonaparte fought the Russians during his invasion in 1812.

Although the French won the Battle of Borodino and went on to capture Moscow, this was the beginning of the end for Napolean, as he went on to be ravaged by the Russian Winter and was forced to retreat soon after.

Just outside the small village of Borodino is the green and grassy field where the battle was fought. On top of a substantial hill is a lasting monument to the important event.

Kolomna, Russia

Located to the south-east of Moscow is the city of Kolomna, which in comparison to the Russian capital is very much a small-town escape.

This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the region and there is a long and intriguing history to be discovered in the museums and monasteries.

Interestingly, the city was off-limits for much its tenure under the Soviet Union, because it was the site of important weapons factories. It was only in 1994 that the city was opened up and even now it is still very much unknown to tourists.

Kolomna makes for a great day trip, and you can explore the restored medieval walls, and the city’s very own Kremlin, a huge fortress which dates back to the 16th century.

4. Zvenigorod

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, Zvenigorod

Zvenigorod is as little as an hour’s drive away from Moscow city centre, and the small town makes for a pleasant break from the capital.

Zvenigorod is an old and historic place, with a history dating back almost a thousand years.

There are some beautiful monasteries to visit as well as the unusual Museum of Russian Desserts, where you can sample and explore this aspect of the local culinary culture.

Zvenigorod was also a town where the world-renowned Anton Checkov once lived, and you can visit a museum here that’s dedicated to his life.

5. Sergiyev Posad

Sergiyev Posad

North of the capital is the city of Sergiyev Posad, which is one of the few well-known tourist destinations in the surrounding region.

You will find this as a suggested stop on most travel itineraries to Moscow, and many tour companies include this as part of their excursions around the city because this city is home to the famous Trinity Lavra of St Sergius.

This is a huge Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been here for hundreds of years, and continues to be run by monks who look after the revered tomb of St Sergius, who was laid to rest here.

It’s an important pilgrimage place for Orthodox Christians and an important stop for tourists.

6. Kubinka Tank Museum

Kubinka Tank Museum

Outside Moscow, you can find an unusual museum which will give you a truly ‘Russian’ experience.

The Kubinka Tank Museum was once the location of a Red Army tank testing ground. Now, it’s been turned into a huge museum that showcases every conceivable type of armoured vehicle.

7. Arkhangelskoye Estate

Arkhangelskoye Estate

The Arkhangelskoye Estate was built on the outskirts of Moscow and dates back to the late 18th century when it was constructed by a Rusian aristocratic family.

For over a century, it was the domain of the nobility, until of course, the Russian Revolution and the advent of Communism swept the family that owned the estate out of the country.

The estate was opened to the public by the Communists and turned into a museum, which it remains today.

Restoration work after the fall of the Soviet Union saved the Arkhangelskoye Estate from falling into disrepair and kept the grounds and the grand palace as a lavish example of pre-Revolution Russia.

8. Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl, Russia

Yaroslavl is found a few hours to the north of Moscow and makes for a long day trip from the city. It’s worth the journey to experience one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.

Yaroslavl is found on the banks of the River Volga and has been a historically important city throughout Russian history. The city has even been the capital of the country at various points.

You can explore the many museums and monasteries to learn more about this intriguing destination.

9. Rostov Veliky

Rostov Veliky

Just south of Yaroslavl is the small but culturally rich town of Rostov Veliky.

This is another important site in Russian history, as the town can date its origins back to early Slavic settlement around Moscow.

Lake Nero is a beautiful and expansive lake near the town, fringed on one side by an ancient fortress, giving Rostov Veliky a wonderful atmosphere to experience.

10. Vladimir

Vladimir, Russia

Two hours east of Moscow is another historic Russian city that is very much on the regional tourist trail.

It makes for a great day trip from the capital because Vladimir dates back to the 12th century and is full of Russian history and culture.

This was one of the first Russian capitals and it still contains many beautiful medieval buildings that are hundreds of years old.

Suzdal, Russia

The small town of Suzdal is just a few kilometres north of the city of Vladimir.

The town is part of a fantastic UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the historic sites from both Suzdal and Vladimir.

The town was founded in medieval times and also acted for a time as an early capital for Russian kingdoms in the region.

Klin, Russia

Klin is a fairly unassuming town to the north-west of Moscow, but it’s worth visiting to see one particular sight, the house of Tchaikovsky.

The famous 19th-century composer spent his final days here and wrote his very last piece of work in the house in Klin. It is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

It’s a grand estate and an interesting insight into pre-Soviet, Russian culture.

13. Melikova

Melikova

A short trip past the Moscow suburbs will bring you to another famous estate, the house of renowned Russian writer and playwright Anton Checkov.

By the town of Checkov, which was renamed in his honour, the museum of Melikova will take you on a journey through his life and indeed, what the lives of many of his contemporary fellow Russians would have been like too.

14. Gorki Leninskie

Gorki Leninskie

On the southern edge of Moscow is Gorki Leniniskie.

This grand estate was once the realm of Russian nobles, but after the Russian Revolution it was personally taken over by Vladimir Lenin who turned it into his own home.

He spent much of his last years here, and after his death, the estate became a shrine to his life and legacy.

Today it still remains an interesting museum, and is still in many ways a shrine to communism.

15. Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park is a huge area of protected land that is found right on the edge of Moscow and is even surrounded on several sides by suburbs of the city.

It’s unusual to find such a large national park so close to a capital and it’s easy to spend the day exploring this veritable wilderness of beautiful scenery and plentiful wildlife.
