AUBURN HILLS, MI – Although they’ve been on-and-off-again partners for more than thirty years, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young were, and remain, four very different individuals, who occasionally come together as one entity.

That was the story last night at the Palace Arena, where these four grandfathers hit the road again, opening the CSNY2K tour.

For the 16,900 fans here, it seemed like deja vu all over again.

Ever-smiling Crosby and Nash sang well-rehearsed harmonies that floated above the guitar work of Stills and Young, crashing only occasionally.

Any arena from Madison Square Garden to the Palace isn’t totally friendly to CSNY’s acoustic rock treatments – early on at last night’s performance, many of the pretty grace notes in the music were drowned out by the power of the volume.

But as the concert worked its way through the three-hour program, the mix got a great deal crisper – especially in the after-intermission, unplugged set.

All of the musicians on stage have matured since one-time Byrd Crosby, Stills (then of Buffalo Springfield) and Nash (of the Hollies) first got together to sing for fun at the late Cass Elliot’s home in ’68. Young, another Buffalo Springfield veteran, didn’t join the supergroup until ’69, when they made their live debut at Woodstock.

There’s more fat and less hair these days, but all in all, the spirit of the band is still intact.

Late last year, when the concert series was announced, David Crosby said this tour will be different, because: “I’ll be awake.”

True enough. The entire ensemble was sharp through the lengthy show.

With all four members on stage, Stephen Stills opened the show, setting the pace with “Carry On.” For that oldie, the boys went with a full rock assault, highlighted by Stills’ awesome guitar talent, but not-so- awesome vocals.

The fans who bought the $200 per ticket seats on the floor didn’t use them much after the strong opener – the entire house was on its feet, moving to the music.

Neil Young’s controversial “Southern Man” was up next, with Young singing in his upper register and pogo-ing to his own guitar work.

Song three, “Stand and be Counted” off the 1999 CSNY album, “Looking Forward”, belonged to the portly Crosby.

Here, and on other songs where he had the lead throughout the evening, Crosby displayed his unique ability to make a simple song sound like an angry battle cry.

He did the same on his “Almost Cut My Hair.” There, the Sperminator sang with the force and power of a young man, letting his freak flag fly.

And although Graham Nash certainly has the finest voice of the quartet, he has the least stage presence, looking even older than his years last night, sipping tea between numbers.

The stage was simply set, a few floor lamps and a wall of amps. The boys of CSNY stood in SNCY formation across the stage, Young being the only member of the band to take advantage of the large space, getting physical to the music.

Young made a number of top showings, mostly when he played slowly and deliberately, such as with the folk-pop ballad “Slowpoke”, that thoughtfully contemplates getting older and wiser.

He did the same for his classic “After The Gold Rush”, which he played with a stark arrangement, accompanying himself on an antique pipe organ, while Crosby and Nash offered back-up harmonies.

Another favorite, “Guinevere”, was played next, with Crosby and Nash in lead vocal position. And though it was a crowd favorite, it played so closely to the powerful “Gold Rush” that it paled by comparison.

This opening show for a tour that will run for near a year, nicely answers the question, “Should we still care about CSNY?”.

The answer is yes. The extraordinary music that these boys have created has stood the test of time, giving them the ability to hold on to their youth, in spite of old age.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young play Madison Square Garden April 3-4, and the arena at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in New Jersey, on April 9.

DAVID CROSBY

David Crosby has kicked cocaine, served prison time, gone broke, received a liver transplant and survived a bad motorcycle crash.

Now 58, Crosby recently revealed he’s the father of two kids with rocker Melissa Etheridge and her girlfriend Julie Cypher. Jan, his wife of 12 years, reportedly gave her blessing.

The Los Angeleno began his career as a founding member of the Byrds but was booted from the band in 1967. Two years later, he joined up with Stills and Nash.

During the early ’80s, Crosby was dogged by a series of weapons and drug charges that landed him in a Texas prison for a year in 1985.

He emerged drug-free and mended his relationship with Nash, Stills and Young.

The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee underwent an emergency liver transplant in 1994. Less than six months later, Jan gave birth to a son, Django.

In 1998, Crosby teamed up for an album and tour with James Raymond, a son he gave up for adoption 35 years earlier.

STEPHEN STILLS

While Stephen Stills – a highly skilled guitarist – has often strayed into solo territory, his collaborations have drawn the most attention.

The 54-year-old Dallas native’s liaison with Young goes back to the ’60s, when the two played in the eclectic Buffalo Springfield, which disbanded after only one top 10 hit.

In 1977, Stills was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice – for his roles in Buffalo Springfield and CSNY.

Two years ago, he teamed up with Public Enemy rapper Chuck D to cut the soundtrack for Spike Lee’s “He Got Game,” featuring a hip-hop rendition of “For What Its Worth,” the protest song Stills wrote in the ’60s as a member of Buffalo Springfield.

Before the reunion tour, Stills was performing solo shows at venues including the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut.

GRAHAM NASH

It takes more than two broken legs to stop Graham Nash.

While he’s still recovering from a Sept. 12 Hawaii boating accident that tossed him in the air and landed him in a wheelchair, here’s betting the 57-year-old singer can still wow fans with his dazzling charisma.

Early on, he was the group’s resident lady killer, dating Joni Mitchell after Crosby and stealing Joan Baez from Stills. A high-school dropout from Blackpool, England, he started out in the Brit band the Hollies, but left in 1968. Soon after, he was in New York, cutting “You Don’t Have to Cry” with Crosby and Stills, whom he’d met during the Hollies’ American tour.

He briefly reunited with the Hollies in 1983, but says his work with CSNY is his top priority.

Married for 22 years, Nash now lives in an English-style cottage in Encino, Calif., with a giant plastic cow in the front yard.

Solo superstar Neil Young, 53, has an on-again, off-again relationship with his bandmates.

Called the Godfather of Grunge, he’s best known for his solo work, especially his top-selling album “Harvest” (1972), which featured the No. 1 hit “Heart of Gold.”

The iconoclastic Ontarian, who has flirted with rockabilly, techno, blues and grunge, met Stills in 1965, and the two became fast friends.

In 1969, Young joined forces with Crosby, Stills and Nash for a Woodstock appearance, a nationwide tour and their debut album, “Deja Vu” (1970).

Young pursued a hugely successful solo career but in 1988 fulfilled a promise that he’d work with CSNY again if Crosby kicked his drug habit, resulting in the “comeback” album “American Dream.”

The elder statesman of rock now lives a quiet life on his Northern California ranch with his wife, Pegi, and their son, Ben, who has cerebral palsy.

Flashback: CSNY Rip Into ‘Southern Man’ on 2000 Reunion Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In the summer of 1988, Rolling Stone asked Neil Young if he was willing to reform Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for a tour. They were midway through cutting their long-awaited followup to 1970’s Deja Vu and hadn’t hit the road since their 1974 stadium extravaganza that basically invented the big money rock reunion tour. Crosby, Stills and Nash had toured heavily as a trio in that time, but Young was only willing to take part at one-off charitable gigs like Live Aid and the Bridge School Benefit.

“They wanted to book a tour, and I said no way,” Young told writer Jim Henke . “I don’t want to have anything to do with a tour. When the record’s finished and we know what we’ve got, that’s the time to talk about a tour. Also, everyone needs to really get in shape if we tour. There’s no way getting around the fact that a CSNY tour would be a nostalgia tour to a great degree. CSNY is Woodstock – it’s that era, that whole generation. So why go out there and not be at our physical best?”

By 2000, the group was in a very different place. After a bleak period in the 1980s, David Crosby was recovering from a liver transplant. Many of the old tensions had gone away, and reunion tours by the Eagles, the Who, Fleetwood Mac, Kiss and Page & Plant had proven that the road was a very, very lucrative place for aging rock stars from the 1960s and 1970s. CSNY came together in 1999 to begin work on the new LP Looking Forward , and from the very beginning of the process Young made it clear he was willing to support it with a tour in 2000.

Tickets for the 41-date CSNY2K tour sold out all over the country even though many seats cost over $200. The fans that paid got to see a marathon set that regularly blew past the three-hour mark with 30 songs with the bulk of the show devoted to classics like “Carry On,” “Ohio,” “Almost Cut My Hair” and “Teach Your Children.” They even did a smattering of Young solo tunes like “Cinnamon Girl,” “After The Gold Rush” and “Rockin’ In The Free World” in addition to songs by the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield.

VH1 broadcast the beginning of opening night at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. Check out this video of “Southern Man” from that night. They play it with the same fire and passion they did back in 1970, even if their waistlines and hairlines had changed a bit in the intervening thirty years. They seemed quite old to many back then, but nobody in the group had even hit 60. (For comparison, they were just about seven years older than Eddie Vedder is right now.) The tour was so successful they did it again in 2002 and then again in 2006 to support Young’s furious anti-Bush disc Living With War.

Kanye West Wanted to ‘Cage’ Donda Students and Threatened to Punch Staffer: Lawsuit

Steve vai and tool's danny carey unite with king crimson musicians for 'beat' tour, biden is building a ‘superstructure’ to stop trump from stealing the election, casey benjamin, ace multi-instrumentalist for robert glasper, a tribe called quest, dead at 45.

Young lost interest in CSNY after 2006, and some unfortunate Crosby comments in 2014 about his new girlfriend Daryl Hannah did little to help group relations despite his repeated apologies. But CSN toured every year like clockwork until late 2015 when they had their own meltdown and broke up. All three members still tour individually, but 2018 is the 50th anniversary of their original formation and 2019 is the 50th anniversary of their debut LP (and first tour where a guy named Neil joined them on guitar).

Big money offerings will surely pour in for a reunion tour. While there’s currently no evidence they are even considering such a thing, the band’s history shows anything is possible.
